The Gays and Tennis Part 156 - US Open Week 2

Will it be another Alcaraz (Garfia)/“Nole” final?

Will Peppa Pig snort hee way to the final?

I hope I don’t jinx Daddy Fritz by posting his pic:

Wow.

I like Stanimal but he's about as sexy to me as Peppa.

by Anonymousreply 2September 2, 2023 10:56 PM

Ons is shitting the bed.

by Anonymousreply 3September 2, 2023 11:56 PM

Ons is having offs night.

by Anonymousreply 4September 3, 2023 12:11 AM

Ons is yet another player who MUST be visibly despondent when not playing well.

by Anonymousreply 5September 3, 2023 12:23 AM

As always R4

by Anonymousreply 6September 3, 2023 12:33 AM

Dimitrov in tight white shorts 🤤

by Anonymousreply 7September 3, 2023 12:37 AM

Ons is having a MELTDOWN

by Anonymousreply 8September 3, 2023 12:47 AM

Why is ESPN2 lingering on the Pegula/Gauff post-match speech when there’s actual tennis going on?

by Anonymousreply 9September 3, 2023 12:48 AM

Because they’re Americans.

by Anonymousreply 10September 3, 2023 12:49 AM

As I posted in the last thread regarding Ons - is the PTPA a cause or a symptom?

by Anonymousreply 11September 3, 2023 12:50 AM

I said earlier that the night session was meh. But Baez could challenge Med if he plays well.

by Anonymousreply 12September 3, 2023 12:55 AM

How can On shoes/apparel not sign Ons to an endorsement deal.

by Anonymousreply 13September 3, 2023 12:57 AM

What did you post, R11?

by Anonymousreply 14September 3, 2023 1:00 AM

I LOVE how some of the people who end up on camera/on the jumbo screen get such a kick out of it and dance or wave. And others just sit there, don't respond, and seem like they want it over as soon as possible.

by Anonymousreply 15September 3, 2023 1:02 AM

Speaking of the company On running, it's pretty bad that Swiatek doesn't wear their shoes. Pretty much saying that the shoes aren't good enough even though they're primarily a running shoes company.

by Anonymousreply 16September 3, 2023 1:03 AM

I’d be the latter, R15.

by Anonymousreply 17September 3, 2023 1:04 AM

I think I'd wave, R17, but I wouldn't do anything "big."

by Anonymousreply 18September 3, 2023 1:08 AM

"Speaking of the company On running, it's pretty bad that Swiatek doesn't wear their shoes. Pretty much saying that the shoes aren't good enough even though they're primarily a running shoes company."

It's like Under Armour - when they blew up and athletes and college teams started wearing their apparel, a lot didn't wear the shoes because they were considered sub-par.

by Anonymousreply 19September 3, 2023 1:09 AM

Ons running?

by Anonymousreply 20September 3, 2023 1:12 AM

On company. The website says On running, but they make tennis shoes.

by Anonymousreply 22September 3, 2023 1:15 AM

Thank you, R22.

by Anonymousreply 23September 3, 2023 1:17 AM

How is Ons losing this match?!?!?!

by Anonymousreply 24September 3, 2023 1:19 AM

Bouzkova is pulling a page out of Novaxx 's playbook

by Anonymousreply 25September 3, 2023 1:19 AM

She's a nervy type, that Ons

by Anonymousreply 26September 3, 2023 1:20 AM

Doesn't Jabeur have the mystery viral illness that's circulating?

by Anonymousreply 27September 3, 2023 1:21 AM

I give up. Ons is trash

by Anonymousreply 28September 3, 2023 1:21 AM

She has said she isn't feeling 100 percent.

Is the mystery illness simply Covid?

by Anonymousreply 29September 3, 2023 1:22 AM

OMG this Jabeur/Bouzkova match is a joke.

by Anonymousreply 30September 3, 2023 1:24 AM

I feel bad for poor Mons, unable to beat even a physically hobbled opponent.

by Anonymousreply 31September 3, 2023 1:25 AM

Yes it probably is R29. But everyone seems content to call it the “summer flu” or something.

by Anonymousreply 32September 3, 2023 1:26 AM

Bazooka is plying on one leg and still beating Jabeur

by Anonymousreply 33September 3, 2023 1:28 AM

"I'M NOT FEELING WELL, FUCKTARDS. I DON'T BLOW WINNABLE MATCHES WHEN HEALTHY!! ..... oh ... wait... um...

by Anonymousreply 34September 3, 2023 1:29 AM

So we'll never know if this is Covid or not?

by Anonymousreply 35September 3, 2023 1:30 AM

If only there were a way to tell if people have covid.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 36September 3, 2023 1:31 AM

This Mons and Bush match is garbage.

This is seriously the marquee Saturday night match?

Is there really nothing else to watch besides boring-ass Zverev and Dimitrov?

by Anonymousreply 37September 3, 2023 1:32 AM

I mean, there ARE bugs other than Covid, but still, it does kind of seem fishy.

Totally anecdotal and a sample size of one, but I have a friend who is sick with a summer cold right now and he did get tested and didn't have Covid.

by Anonymousreply 38September 3, 2023 1:32 AM

Chris[sie] Evert is happily participating in the cover-up—she's called Ons's ailment the flu several times tonight.

by Anonymousreply 39September 3, 2023 1:33 AM

Bazooka is not fucking injured it is a trick to win the fucking match!!!

by Anonymousreply 40September 3, 2023 1:33 AM

R27, you can always watch the Katie Borring and Payton Stearns match

by Anonymousreply 41September 3, 2023 1:37 AM

It's fucking Covid.

People used to get random summer colds, but there weren't flu epidemics sweeping through schools and major sporting events in the weeks before Labor Day weekend.

by Anonymousreply 42September 3, 2023 1:37 AM

MOns pubis

by Anonymousreply 43September 3, 2023 1:38 AM

The Stearns match ended half an hour ago.

by Anonymousreply 44September 3, 2023 1:38 AM

Of course its covid. Can't scare the attendance off or switch the tournament off now though, so it's the 'flu'...

by Anonymousreply 45September 3, 2023 1:40 AM

I myself feel like I'm coming down with something after attending a fair 2 days ago

by Anonymousreply 46September 3, 2023 1:41 AM

Huge entourage walking behind him.

by Anonymousreply 60September 3, 2023 2:03 AM

Ons is probably infecting everyone in the locker room. Love all the dropshots though, super compelling tennis.

by Anonymousreply 61September 3, 2023 2:14 AM

She’s infecting them with shared bodily fluids. All of them!

by Anonymousreply 62September 3, 2023 2:22 AM

God I love Grigor but he just does this every fucking time. Just gives us hope and then it's some physical tweak which triggers a complete, total mental collapse. It's like being a Kvitova fan, or a Madison Keys fan. They just never come thru. (I know Kvitova has won majors.)

On a brighter note, Baez lifted his shirt and showed his ripped, smooth, Argentinian stomach. And in so doing, showed a thick bulge running towards his hip. I'll bet he throws a mean fuck.

I see Vondy has got a sponsor now - Red Bull. Maybe they liked the prison tatts.

[quote]We could have had a Pegula vs Svitolina / late night match and instead we got Ova vs Ova boring

Supposedly prime time matches are day ones on Labor Day weekend.

by Anonymousreply 88September 3, 2023 3:50 AM

I thought Baez and Schwartzman were the same person

by Anonymousreply 89September 3, 2023 3:52 AM

Out of curiosity, I looked it up and Vondy and her coach, Jan Hernych, did get matching tattoos - and in New York! But a very boring tiny date of the Wimbledon final. The coach probably wimped out of something more interesting like a strawberry.

by Anonymousreply 90September 3, 2023 3:53 AM

R89, I posted something similar several threads ago. When you look at them closely they look nothing alike, but in movement on court they are similar.

by Anonymousreply 91September 3, 2023 4:02 AM

Fascinating how the male players who are doing well are really dominating. Fritz, Meddy, Carlitos, they're just not dropping many games. Surprised to see Novak lose 2 sets last night, but I never doubted he'd come back. Once-in-a-generation player, he is.

But yeah, these late night early rounds have been pretty boring so far. Still waiting for that electric 2am match, 5-all in the 5th set...

by Anonymousreply 92September 3, 2023 4:11 AM

It's quite possible that Iga had an existing shoe contract which is why she's not wearing On tennis shoes.

by Anonymousreply 93September 3, 2023 4:11 AM

R93 She was with Asics before - but for apparel too. I don't think they would have had a separate shoe and apparel contract.

by Anonymousreply 94September 3, 2023 4:19 AM

Also, Ben Shelton (sponsored by On) is wearing On shoes.

by Anonymousreply 95September 3, 2023 4:23 AM

Except that Djokovic is not the only one of his generation.

by Anonymousreply 96September 3, 2023 4:57 AM

I really don't think Baez is that cute, but these short shorts and legs are really working. One side of the shorts is jacked up to right below ass level.

"@VasekPospisil

There were discussions a few years back that the ATP/WTA wanted to “slow the game down” to have longer points for fans. The balls have been getting incrementally heavier and surprise surprise, it’s killing our bodies. Almost every player I’ve spoken to.. [1/2]

@VasekPospisil

..feels the same way. I’ve never seen more wrist, elbow, and shoulder injuries in the locker room. If these changes to the ball don’t start getting reversed, it’s only going to get worse. Please start listening @atptour @wtatour. Player injuries are bad for you too. [2/2]"

Shelton started playing better, but Paul and some really untimely errors. And he failed to break at 3-0 40-15 to go up 4-0 and two breaks which would have sealed the set. And Shelton didn't just have two huge aces to erase those break points. Paul was in at least one of them.

by Anonymousreply 128September 3, 2023 6:02 PM

Speaking of MAGAt material, Cirstea is on court now. She recently posted this on instagram: "Make men masculine again. Make women feminine again. Make children innocent again."

Of course, an unmarried, childless woman like her is still playing professional sport in her 30s so it seems like a lot of projection as usual.

by Anonymousreply 141September 3, 2023 8:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 170September 4, 2023 1:04 AM

I think Gojo actually despises Novaxx.

by Anonymousreply 171September 4, 2023 1:05 AM

R171, what makes you say that?

by Anonymousreply 172September 4, 2023 1:11 AM

How are Serb-Croat relations. I always forget what countries like or hate each other in that part of the world. Djokovic's coach is Croatian, so it can't be that bad.

by Anonymousreply 173September 4, 2023 1:13 AM

R171 novaxx in his pre game interview said he has practiced with Gojo and how they are from the same region. He made it seem like they are best pals. I suspect it's lies from Novaxx who enjoys making it appear like everything is kosher

Novak is known to lie about every relationship with every player, especially the time he summered with Fed and Mirka on the coast of Malta. It never happened. Roger would sooner eat dirt, than sit for a meal with Novak.

Up next - Peppa v. Panface!

by Anonymousreply 178September 4, 2023 1:44 AM

Queen Jelena!

by Anonymousreply 179September 4, 2023 2:13 AM

Ostapenko resplendent in her yellow-and-green tennis ball outfit.

by Anonymousreply 180September 4, 2023 2:14 AM

Peppa seems to want to try to hit EVERYTHING as hard as possible and can't accept anything otherwise. It makes her inconsistent but seems to be what Iga has trouble with - she likes some time to set up her shots.

by Anonymousreply 181September 4, 2023 2:35 AM

Ostapenko falling apart early, malheureusement.

by Anonymousreply 182September 4, 2023 2:41 AM

I still expect Iga to win this though since she has been playing better than Peppa this tournament.

We've already had a classic Peppa moment when she told her coach to move seats.

by Anonymousreply 183September 4, 2023 2:41 AM

Peppa's black trainer guy is cute.

by Anonymousreply 184September 4, 2023 2:49 AM

I think Peppa could be a narcissist. She's a colorful, bigger than life personality, thinks everything should go her way, is demanding, and every match she has this look of real hatred towards her opponent, sometimes makes nasty comments too.

by Anonymousreply 185September 4, 2023 2:53 AM

Her personality is not the only thing about her bigger than life.

"I think Peppa could be a narcissist. She's a colorful, bigger than life personality, thinks everything should go her way, is demanding, and every match she has this look of real hatred towards her opponent, sometimes makes nasty comments too."

Maybe. But, I know from playing competitive tennis that there's some people who are just total assholes on court and are completely fine off court.

by Anonymousreply 190September 4, 2023 3:26 AM

Into the third set with Svee and Peppa.

by Anonymousreply 191September 4, 2023 3:36 AM

Iga just can't seem to deal with this crazy pace and Penko is 'on' in this match, serving well, more winners than UEs than usual.

by Anonymousreply 192September 4, 2023 3:37 AM

3-0 Peppa.

by Anonymousreply 213September 4, 2023 4:18 AM

Ostapenko on electronic line calling: “Honestly, I don’t believe in it 100%." Gives that slightly smug, knowing laugh/smile as she says that.

Seems that the key to beating Iga is rushing her constantly. It seems to keep her off-kilter even on balls she would normally deal with fine.

by Anonymousreply 218September 4, 2023 7:44 AM

I'm surprised that Iga is so young at 22. She seems mature for her age (in a good way).

But all bow down to Queen Aryna, the she hulk! I've liked her since I watched a flirty interview with her a Wublev (she was flirty toward him, not the other way round lol - I thought he looked a bit squicked out. One of the fam?)

by Anonymousreply 219September 4, 2023 7:49 AM

[quote]Every time I see Iga she fails to impress. What's with the ranking?

She has 4 slams at 22, so she's not a one-slam wonder even if 3 of them are RG. I think you have to see her on clay to showcase her game. Even Woz who was no. 1 for a long time is a one-slam wonder.

Coco v. Peppa: who wins?

by Anonymousreply 230September 4, 2023 1:37 PM

coco

by Anonymousreply 231September 4, 2023 1:53 PM

Who are we rooting for tonight between Aryna Sabalenka and Diarrhoea Concertina?

by Anonymousreply 232September 4, 2023 3:11 PM

I could see Peppa possibly beating Coco, losing to her in a close match, or getting beat fairly bad. Peppa is an inconsistent wildcard. In the end, I see some sort of mundane win for Coco, like 7-5, 6-3. Peppa needs to get into the match early. Coco doesn't have the mental scars that Iga does in relation to Peppa.

by Anonymousreply 233September 4, 2023 3:13 PM

Not yet, r233!

by Anonymousreply 234September 4, 2023 3:15 PM

Why are they closing the roofs? Not raining there, right?

by Anonymousreply 236September 4, 2023 3:54 PM

Which player is commenting during the Stearns match?

by Anonymousreply 237September 4, 2023 4:01 PM

"Why are they closing the roofs? Not raining there, right?"

They'll sometimes close them for heat/humidity if the heat index is above a certain amount, and they'll close them if the whether forecast indicates there's a good chance of rain/storms.

by Anonymousreply 238September 4, 2023 4:08 PM

by Anonymousreply 332September 5, 2023 2:57 AM

"Has there always been fist-pumping like we see it now? Were they doing it in 70's and 80's? Like every single player? "

There's always been fist pumping and "COOOME OOONs!! and other demonstrations, but never this many players this amount of the time.

My unscientific hot take is it's the result of smart phones, the internet, and social media. People are SO used to feedback for everything they do, used to getting a response when they doing something - anything, so in a way they're "addicted." They feel like they didn't do anything and they're not see if it doesn't get a response. The fist pumping, yelling, etc., encourages the response.

But, again, there's been boisterous fist pumpers before the "modern" age. But it seems that there's more people who MUST be doing something all the time.

by Anonymousreply 333September 5, 2023 2:58 AM

Your hot take is wrong. Jimmy Connors was doing this from the very beginning of the 70s. Many followed.

Carlitos is SO happy right now. The only player who really has his number (other than occasionally Novak) is Sinner.

R335 Carlitos is my #1, but Zeverev is pretty sexy

by Anonymousreply 342September 5, 2023 6:01 AM

It pleases me that Iga so desperately wanted to extend her #1 streak and is so heartbroken she lost it.

Meanwhile sablenka out there claiming to be sad Iga lost her $1 spot. This from someone who so desperately too, wanted to be #1

R340, and, occasionally, Tommy Paul.

by Anonymousreply 344September 5, 2023 7:40 AM

R333, my take is different. In the 1960s and '70s, sports broadcasts used a limited number of static cameras. Fans usually didn't see themselves on camera; there were no giant images of matches broadcast in the stadiums; no dramatic close-ups of players, and often no reaction shots. But all of those things were introduced and, over time, the players (and the fans) became more performative. They knew that they were on camera all the time.

by Anonymousreply 348September 5, 2023 1:15 PM

I think it’s also monkey see, monkey do. Lower ranked players see Nadal and Serena showboating and gassing themselves up between points. They then do the same to put on airs of being a tough contender to the viewers at home, and eventually everyone up and down the draw is fist pumping and ¡vamos!-ing all over the court.

by Anonymousreply 349September 5, 2023 1:50 PM

Is there a reason top female skiers Lindsay Vonna Mikaela Schriff are such strong Iga supporters?

by Anonymousreply 350September 5, 2023 1:56 PM

Because they’re lesbians!

by Anonymousreply 351September 5, 2023 2:02 PM

More players are taking the US college route, where there is lots of fist pumping, chest thumping and shouting.

Listen, the NYC crowd gets more into the match when a player is inviting them in. So the smart players do just that, except players like Iga, Keys and Tommy for whom it’s not their style.

by Anonymousreply 352September 5, 2023 2:10 PM

The reason Coco’s match isn’t in prime time is apparently she lobbied hard for the noon slot. Not sure if it’s because she’s been playing so much tennis with her doubles or because she knows she can handle the heat better than most players.

by Anonymousreply 353September 5, 2023 2:11 PM

I don't recall Chrissie or Steffi fist pumping and screaming "COME ON!!!"

by Anonymousreply 354September 5, 2023 2:24 PM

Like grunting, fist-pumping started slowly (Connors was the first popularizer) and gradually gained ground. I remember Martina N emulating Connors's fist-pumping at the end of the match when she surprisingly beat Graf in the semis to make the 1991 US Open final. Now its fist-pumping after every point, even if it's on an opponent's unforced error. I've even seen a fist-pump after an opponent's double fault.

by Anonymousreply 355September 5, 2023 2:43 PM

Serena began this fist pumping business

by Anonymousreply 356September 5, 2023 3:03 PM

Actually the come ons and fist pumping really took off with asshole racist Lleyton Hewitt who was beyond obnoxious with them.

by Anonymousreply 357September 5, 2023 3:05 PM

The sport's great champions of the 90s, like Graf, Seles, Sampras, Agassi, did not do this ridiculous celebrating after each point they won.

by Anonymousreply 358September 5, 2023 3:07 PM

America’s sweetheart, continuous winner Danielle Collins, is particularly egregious with the “C’mons”.

by Anonymousreply 359September 5, 2023 3:10 PM

Coco v. Peppa will be an entertaining match.

by Anonymousreply 360September 5, 2023 3:18 PM

It’s in keeping with the personality of NYC. In your face and proud of it.

It’s people making their desire known.

And reveling in their great moments. You see that impossible shot I just pulled off???

I love it.

by Anonymousreply 361September 5, 2023 3:25 PM

r361 for a great shot, I have no problem with it.

For an unforced error, it's kind of obnoxious and unsportsmanlike.

by Anonymousreply 362September 5, 2023 3:35 PM

They don't just do it during the US Open or during the Slams. It has nothing to do with the "NYC energy." They do the fist-pumping stuff during every match at every tournament.

by Anonymousreply 363September 5, 2023 3:40 PM

It’s more pronounced at the Open. Check out Wimbledon and report back.

by Anonymousreply 364September 5, 2023 4:05 PM

Players get out there and show no personality and you whine about how boring they are.

They show personality and you brand them obnoxious.

Fortunately, they don’t need to please everybody.

[quote]The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is the governing body of world tennis, wheelchair tennis, and beach tennis. It was founded in 1913 as the International Lawn Tennis Federation by twelve national tennis associations. As of 2016, there are 211 national and six regional associations that make up the ITF's membership. The ITF's governance responsibilities include maintaining and enforcing the rules of tennis, regulating international team competitions, promoting the game, and preserving the sport's integrity via anti-doping and anti-corruption programs. The ITF partners with the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) to govern professional tennis. The ITF organizes the Grand Slam events, annual team competitions for men (Davis Cup), women (Billie Jean King Cup), and mixed teams (Hopman Cup), as well as tennis and wheelchair tennis events at the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games on behalf of the International Olympic Committee. The ITF sanctions the Grand Slam tennis tournaments as well as circuits that span age ranges (junior, professional men and women, and seniors) as well as disciplines (wheelchair tennis; beach tennis). In addition to these circuits, the ITF also maintains rankings for juniors, seniors, wheelchair and beach tennis.

by Anonymousreply 400September 5, 2023 5:26 PM

I remember watching Ostapenko in 2017 when she won the French Open. I couldn't believe that a player with that many weaknesses could win a Major, but she somehow managed to do it. Now, six years later, I don't think she's improved on any of those glaring weaknesses. It's sad and I'm wondering if winning the French was actually bad for her in that she lost any desire to improve. But, really, for her to be pushing second serves in today at 71 mph? Geesh.

by Anonymousreply 401September 5, 2023 5:47 PM

Troubling ‘US Open bug’ taking down top tennis players

Even the top players in tennis are no match for this bug.

A mystery “US Open bug” is making the rounds among star athletes at this year’s tournament, resulting in shocking upsets and withdrawals as the athletes struggle to fight on the court through coughing fits and stomach aches.

“I’m a zombie because I have a flu,” Tunisian tennis star Ons Jabeur, 29, said at a news conference on Thursday after defeating Linda Noskova in three sets.

The No. 5 seed was visibly unwell during the match, and was seen coughing and sometimes even struggling to reach the ball on difficult shots.

“I’m taking a lot of medicine,” the No. 5 seed admitted at the conference, adding that she “basically took every medication” the tournament doctors could offer.

Jabeur – who was upset by Zheng Qinwen of China over the weekend – is one of many players felled by the so-called “US Open bug” since the tournament opened at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Aug. 28.

Emil Ruusuvuori, 24, of Finland, withdrew ahead of his first-round match due to an unspecified illness.

Austrian Dominic Thiem, 30, subsequently retired in the second set of his second-round match on Wednesday after collapsing onto the net with a stomach issue, the outlet reported.

Czech player Petra Kvitová, 33, also complained of stomach pains before ultimately losing to Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday, Tennis World reported.

“I got the us open bug.. in a way still feels like I’m in the tournament but at home,” Tennys Sandgren, 32, who failed to advance past the qualifiers, tweeted on Thursday.

“Def a bug going around [at the Open,” he added in a separate post.

Also on Thursday, Polish player Hubert Hurkacz, 26, struggled on the court and was treated by medical staff before ultimately falling to Jack Draper, the New York Times reported.

During the match, sniffs, coughs, and other signs of illness were heard throughout the tennis grounds, the outlet added.

Players have also been spotted with tissues in their bags.

Off the court, legendary former player and tennis analyst John McEnroe reported on the second day of the tournament that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

“I’m watching the US Open from home & can’t wait to get back to work soon,” McEnroe said via ESPN.

McEnroe’s diagnosis and the proliferation of troubling symptoms among players has sparked concerns that the tournament may be a superspreader for COVID Pirola variant, which experts say is spreading fast.

by Anonymousreply 404September 5, 2023 6:26 PM

Players – who are in close quarters and share many facilities – are not required to test for COVID at the Open, the Times noted.

Spectators are also not asked to provide proof of vaccination, wear masks, or test prior to attending.

“It would be nice if those players who feel bad would wear masks or something like that. I don’t know if it’s something related to COVID, but usually at sporting events like this, these things can spread easily,” No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek, 22, said ahead of the tournament’s second week, according to Tennis World.

“I’ve already had a few colds this season and it’s had a big impact on me, so at a grand slam I definitely don’t want to make those mistakes. I also watch what I eat. It’s important for me to keep an eye on everything and prevent it,” she added.

Djokovic has an incredible physique. He has a lovely ass.

I don't understand the Fritz love. He's not handsome. He doesn't seem passionate about tennis. He has terrible posture. He's flabby.

by Anonymousreply 409September 5, 2023 6:36 PM

R409 Same here, there's something that repels me about him. So blech, a personality wasteland, but he's popular on DL so.. I also dislike how hard people are trying to make him and his gf 'happen' too. NYT profile, that Netflix show, etc.

by Anonymousreply 410September 5, 2023 6:49 PM

No comment about Fritz, but Djokovic's scarecrow physique is indeed incredibly unattractive.

by Anonymousreply 411September 5, 2023 6:54 PM

"I don't understand the Fritz love. He's not handsome. He doesn't seem passionate about tennis. He has terrible posture. He's flabby. "

A lot of it is just an inside joke. The other half of it is that even if he's not the most handsome or hottest guy with the hottest body, people think he's sexy because they project a bro-y, obnoxious, untamed sexuality due to him having a kid so young and dating skanks. Being an unrepentant whore is hot.

All that said, I don't find him bad looking, though I don't think he's blazingly hot. His voice is sexy to me.

On ESPN, John McEnroe said that Djokovic actually wanted to play in the afternoon today instead of at night. I would have thought he'd prefer playing at night to conserve energy for the potential semis and final.

by Anonymousreply 419September 5, 2023 7:25 PM

MsEnroe needs to take his lips off Novaxx 's dick

by Anonymousreply 420September 5, 2023 7:25 PM

R419 Djokovic is a man of tricks. Most likley he absolutely hates the afternoon hot matches, he is aware that media and opponents have caught wind of this, and now he is playing it like he LOVES afternoon, ultra humid Temps.

The man is a trickster

by Anonymousreply 421September 5, 2023 7:27 PM

Most players seem to prefer day matches. CocoGOAT requested a day match too.

by Anonymousreply 422September 5, 2023 7:27 PM

Was McEnroe sucking Rafa and Federer 's dick as much as he sucks Djokovic 's?

by Anonymousreply 423September 5, 2023 7:28 PM

Did you know that agents, managers, and coaches can finagle certain start times if they have the connections? It's not always successful, but it is at times - the tournament had one thing in mind, the player's entourage wants something else.

by Anonymousreply 424September 5, 2023 7:35 PM

I was a bit surprised this wasn't the night match. My guess is that Djokovic almost lost or has been losing sets and probably pushed for a day match which is when he'll be fresher.

by Anonymousreply 425September 5, 2023 7:41 PM

R423 Mac and all others would have sucked Fed's dick every day for ten years if possible. No one loved Rafa. It was tepid praise at best.

It's one of the reasons I started to stan Rafa. It made no sense to me that the player who was clearly the best in the world (this was 2008-09) couldn't get the respect he deserved. Even though he beat Fed over and over and over. To the point where Fed cried during the 09 Aussie trophy presentation and said: I can't beat this guy.

The fawn over Novak almost as much as they did Fed.

by Anonymousreply 431September 5, 2023 8:17 PM

by Anonymousreply 432September 5, 2023 8:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 433September 5, 2023 8:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 434September 5, 2023 8:27 PM

R421, I agree that it was a statement: he wanted to test himself against these awful conditions and prove it wasn’t a problem.

by Anonymousreply 435September 5, 2023 8:33 PM

So many Djokovic fanatics took the afternoon session as a blatant attempt at match-fixing, as if this was going to be anything but a breezy three-setter. There was no risk of Cincy redux; he could beat Fritz in his sleep, and now he can relax and recover while Tiafoe and Shelton exhaust each other.

Geography question. What are the tallest buildings in the non-Manhattan NYC boroughs? They show all these amazing shots of Manhattan during USO coverage and you really notice how "low" Queens is. I know that's expected; Manhattan is the business center traditionally. But how "high" do Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, even Staten Island get. Business or residential? I'd imagine the airports prevent anything from being built too tall in the outer boroughs.

by Anonymousreply 458September 5, 2023 11:33 PM

Someone upthread posted a little video with Ostapenko, Kasatkina and K's girlfriend, the figure skater Natalia Zabiiako. They were talking about Sabalenka and they said she should have been #1 a long time ago - and they hope when she takes it, she'll stay #1 for a long time.

No love lost for Swiatek? who always praises men goats but never Serena? Is our Iga a widely disliked mean girl?

Being blunt, I don't think a mean girl but an unpopular girl. Iga reminds me of a few geeky/awkward scientist girls I know of. They are never going to be popular or loved because they're so off-putting.

by Anonymousreply 461September 5, 2023 11:50 PM

R455 Carlos can handle it. I have high expectations for him.

by Anonymousreply 462September 6, 2023 12:04 AM

I think R461 hit the nail on the head.. Kasatkina wouldn't be bothered by the ATP fandom; she's another Nadal obsessive. And Swiatek's admiration of Serena Williams is strong enough that she was afraid to meet her, even once she (Swiatek) was #1 in the world. She said she felt like a child whenever she was in proximity to her.

Ostapenko and Kasatkina disliked each other for years until bonding more recently. In time, Swiatek will form more friendships with other players. By her own admission, she found it hard to make small talk or eye contact with other people until she was in her late teens. That wasn't too long ago.

Iga is up her own arse. Serena was a far greater champion, has more wins than iga will ever have and was not acting this way.

Iga is not shy. She is aloof and acts like her shit don't stink

by Anonymousreply 465September 6, 2023 12:20 AM

Iga acts like she's better than all the girls not only tennis wise but everything else

by Anonymousreply 466September 6, 2023 12:20 AM

R464, omg he practically grabbed the microphone from Renae when he relaised she was not going to ask her to sing. Novaxx is so fake , every move is calculated, he was so pissed when she didn't continue the conversation in the path he wanted her to

by Anonymousreply 467September 6, 2023 12:24 AM

He though that he had the perfect set up and practically manhandled Renae Stubbs , annoyed she didn't ask him to sing. Lolz

by Anonymousreply 468September 6, 2023 12:25 AM

[quote]Serena was a far greater champion, has more wins than iga will ever have

I completely agree.

[quote]Iga is not shy. She is aloof and acts like her shit don't stink

She's an introvert and I guarantee you, pretty down on herself. Very anxious and stressed out. Trust me, I know people like that and what they think about themselves. Just because she likes and values reading books for example doesn't mean she thinks she's better than other people - I think that's your own projection.

by Anonymousreply 469September 6, 2023 12:25 AM

Come on Muchova!

by Anonymousreply 470September 6, 2023 12:25 AM

Darren Cahill is punching above his weight with this woman

by Anonymousreply 471September 6, 2023 12:26 AM

[quote] Just because she likes and values reading books for example doesn't mean she thinks she's better than other people - I think that's your own projection

Huh? Who said anything about books? Actually my assessment of Iga is based her poor sportsmanship. The way she sneers down at opponents at the net, yhe cold handshake when she loses a match . Also the constant crying about being bullied. All the girls have to deal with online trolls, Iga thinks she is special

by Anonymousreply 472September 6, 2023 12:29 AM

[quote] the constant crying about being bullied.

Are you confusing her with Osaka?

by Anonymousreply 473September 6, 2023 12:30 AM

She is 22 not fucking 12!

by Anonymousreply 474September 6, 2023 12:33 AM

Send Sorana back to Romania to spend the rest of her days barefoot and pregnant, Karolina!

by Anonymousreply 475September 6, 2023 12:33 AM

Is Iga on the spectrum?

by Anonymousreply 476September 6, 2023 12:33 AM

Kick her in the cunt Mooohova!

by Anonymousreply 477September 6, 2023 12:34 AM

I never had much of an opinion about Cirstea. She was just sort of there. But, her "let's make men masculine, let's make women feminine again" thing makes me not like her, or at least makes me disinterested.

by Anonymousreply 481September 6, 2023 12:40 AM

Coco for the win, fuck the rest.

by Anonymousreply 482September 6, 2023 12:41 AM

Novaxx attempting the Beastie Boys is something I don't even want to imagine, let alone actually hear. He is tone deaf in every sense.

by Anonymousreply 483September 6, 2023 12:41 AM

R450 remove your lazy digits from your hole, wash them and then try Google. Any moron like you should know that Brooklyn now has a few high towers, LIC has a faux high rise area and that’s it for outside of Ma-hat-tan.

by Anonymousreply 484September 6, 2023 12:42 AM

"I was watching some classic tennis matches on a YouTube channel. I caught one of little he-man Justine Henin. Is it me or is Iga's game and style exactly like JH. It's almost like Iga has copied her."

Yes and no. They're both offensive-minded and look to be on their front foot and not defending. They're hard, full swing forehands are somewhat similar. And I guess even though Justine had a one-handed back hand and Iga has a two-handed backhand - they both can slap from that side as well. Justine had a more all-court game in my opinion - utilizing drop shots, lobs, serve and volley more than Iga. She also played better defense - much better slice backhand helped. And, she was much more comfortable playing against big-hitting players and punching it out with them.

by Anonymousreply 485September 6, 2023 12:45 AM

I'm just glad Iga is out of the competition , any of the remaining girls can win it inguess, well except for the Zheng Qheng l, don't like her and don't want her to win.

by Anonymousreply 486September 6, 2023 12:47 AM

Someone is excited. Muchova showing nipples

by Anonymousreply 487September 6, 2023 12:58 AM

Coco can take Muchova. I think Coco Puffs might be in her first USO final

by Anonymousreply 488September 6, 2023 1:00 AM

Why Puffs? Isn't it Coco Pops?

by Anonymousreply 489September 6, 2023 1:02 AM

R478 I have a headache now!

by Anonymousreply 490September 6, 2023 1:04 AM

The planting of -ova onto every name is pretty annoying. They even do it for non-Eastern European names e.g. over there Osaka is 'Osakaova'. Hopefully they will eventually get with the feminist times and drop it.

by Anonymousreply 491September 6, 2023 1:07 AM

Did you guys know it's an all American match tonight? Because I sure didn't!!!

by Anonymousreply 492September 6, 2023 1:14 AM

R492, this may be the real reason that the draw was so one-sided: they wanted to get an American man through to the semis.

by Anonymousreply 493September 6, 2023 1:17 AM

Am I the only one who finds Shelton hot?

by Anonymousreply 494September 6, 2023 1:52 AM

No.

by Anonymousreply 495September 6, 2023 1:54 AM

I’m surprised how personable Ostapenko was in that vlog by Kasatkina. She seems like such a brat on the court, but evidently she can be a mensch and get along famously with other ladies. Granted I’m just talking about how she hangs with some of her fellow Russian speakers in that brief YouTube appearance obviously. But she’s not the total dick I took her for.

by Anonymousreply 496September 6, 2023 2:05 AM

Ostapenko's post match interview was a very honest assessment. She speaks well, is humble, an all around nice girl. I hope she can get past today's routing.

by Anonymousreply 497September 6, 2023 2:08 AM

^ her Presser that is.

by Anonymousreply 498September 6, 2023 2:09 AM

A Ben Shelton / Alcaraz final.

How likely is that?

by Anonymousreply 499September 6, 2023 2:21 AM

You know who was an introvert, and described by everyonr as the most shy on the women's tour yet also well liked and described as the sweetest? Naomi Osaka.

I have never heard anyone describe Iga as shy or sweet. Everyone says she " keeps to herself amd doesn’t mix with the other girls "

by Anonymousreply 500September 6, 2023 2:23 AM

Peppa seems so down to earth on her interviews yet such a bitch on the court

Tiafoe's gf? Is constantly posing up , look at me, I'm here!!

by Anonymousreply 501September 6, 2023 2:29 AM

American media would cream their panties in the event of an Alcaraz vs Shelton Final .

by Anonymousreply 502September 6, 2023 2:34 AM

"Am I the only one who finds Shelton hot?"

No. Though I'd like to see him with a tight fade, and eventually some facial hair - but not yet. His girlfriend looks just like him.

by Anonymousreply 503September 6, 2023 2:49 AM

I think Shelton might actually be Zendaya deep undercover doing some Lee Strasberg method acting.

by Anonymousreply 504September 6, 2023 2:59 AM

It must be discouraging for the men to know that it's likely the final will be Djokovic v Carlos as usual.

by Anonymousreply 505September 6, 2023 2:59 AM

Rooting for Tiafoe, I get good vibes from him always.

by Anonymousreply 506September 6, 2023 3:21 AM

Venus also kept mostly to herself when she joined the tour

by Anonymousreply 507September 6, 2023 3:22 AM

It's okay Frances, you can still do this.

by Anonymousreply 510September 6, 2023 3:53 AM

Shelton is so annoying. His celebrating is even worse than Alcaraz’s.

by Anonymousreply 511September 6, 2023 3:59 AM

R493 you can’t rig a blind draw where seeding is based on objective computer rankings.

by Anonymousreply 512September 6, 2023 4:00 AM

R493 Not everything is a conspiracy.

by Anonymousreply 513September 6, 2023 4:11 AM

by Anonymousreply 515September 6, 2023 4:30 AM

Shelton is one hot twink. I sense big dick energy.

by Anonymousreply 516September 6, 2023 4:39 AM

I don't like Shelton's face at all.

by Anonymousreply 517September 6, 2023 4:41 AM

Shelton’s girlfriend is quite homely.

by Anonymousreply 518September 6, 2023 4:41 AM

Shelton looks - and this is a strange one, I know - like a Ike Barinholtz from The Mindy Project.

Took me forever to figure this out. And once I did? I can't unsee it.

(I want him to destroy Novaxx, but we all know that won't happen.)

by Anonymousreply 519September 6, 2023 5:06 AM

I can see it.

by Anonymousreply 520September 6, 2023 5:08 AM

He's a bit cocky but then Federer and Nadal were known for being a bit immature and bratty at that age so perhaps he'll mature like they did.

by Anonymousreply 521September 6, 2023 6:15 AM

What ever happened to class? I guess obnoxious twinks like Shelton and Garfia are inevitably the future.

by Anonymousreply 522September 6, 2023 8:07 AM

I find the fist pumping at the coaches/family box after EVERY SINGLE POINT annoying, and sort of pathetic? At a key point in the match -- fighting off a service break, or after a very long rally.....fine. But otherwise, get a fucking grip! You're (supposedly) a top-tier player. Act like you've been there before & are supposed to be playing that well.

Jimmy Connors (and other players of his era) did NOT do that on EVERY point of a match.

by Anonymousreply 523September 6, 2023 8:45 AM

Tiafoe seemed to be doing a lot of huffing and puffing for a 25-year-old.

He looked out of shape to me. Losing 20 pounds might make him more competitive.

by Anonymousreply 524September 6, 2023 9:28 AM

Why has the media forgotten about Madison Keys? I just watched a story about Gauff, Tiafoe, Shelton, and Fritz. Not one mention of Madison who is quietly moving up and playing today.

by Anonymousreply 528September 6, 2023 12:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 538September 6, 2023 3:37 PM

I don't get the love Pierre-Hugues Herbert is still getting here as the guy is as antivax as Novaxx himself. He refused to get the vaccine and was sidelined from much of the tour in the last couple of years because of that. Does he have mitigating circumstances I don't know about or is the DL uninformed about this?

by Anonymousreply 539September 6, 2023 3:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 542September 6, 2023 3:51 PM

R540 - both Medvedev and Rublev are Russians - which one is the asshole staying in the $3000 hotel room? Or do you mean Sabalenka?

by Anonymousreply 543September 6, 2023 4:17 PM

I always knew Big Sab had it in her to be a potential contendor for the " next Serena'title

by Anonymousreply 544September 6, 2023 4:18 PM

Sablenka had a chance to make into the finals and might have won her first grand slam at the USO in 2021. Girl lost to Leyla of all people

by Anonymousreply 545September 6, 2023 4:19 PM

I saw a tennis streamer last night say that Keys was hurt so she'd probably lose. I don't know much about her. So I'll pick the Czech girl because of Martina or something.

I like Sabs but I'm still picking Zheng (go Ukraine!)

Woobluv of course! How I want to run my fingers through his curly red hair. Nothing more, mind you, I'm not a prevert!

I'm for the German asshole too - he's hotter - I haven't heard quite enough to turn on him (I'm suspicious of the girlfriend who said he was abusive).

by Anonymousreply 546September 6, 2023 4:23 PM

Wublev team or Il Gingio team?

by Anonymousreply 550September 6, 2023 5:00 PM

Rublev. I think he'll be really hot in bed. probably a freak. he's comes across as quiet. those types are usually freaks in bed

Wuby by a mile. He's not at all 'my type' - but he's very flirtatious and playful. Charisma by the bucket load, especially off court.

Il Gingio's devoid of sex appeal.

by Anonymousreply 554September 6, 2023 5:20 PM

What is with Vondrousova’s “tats?” I put that in quotes because they look Andy Reid from the State Farm commercials has been drawing on her.

by Anonymousreply 555September 6, 2023 5:25 PM

Disagree about IL Gingio is you're referring to Sinner. I find Jannick very sexy

by Anonymousreply 556September 6, 2023 5:27 PM

I've noticed that the New York crowds are utterly disinterested in the on court post-match interviews, compared to other tournaments.

Barely a ripple of applause even when the player is thanking the crowd for their support.

by Anonymousreply 557September 6, 2023 5:35 PM

Do the players get paid for each stage of the tournament they progress through? I read sablenka gets 775k for going through to the semis, does she get that PLUS another sum if she advances to the finals?

by Anonymousreply 558September 6, 2023 5:46 PM

No—don’t be stupid.

by Anonymousreply 559September 6, 2023 5:52 PM

Iga made an entire woe is me Twitter post lamenting stealthy on losing her #1 title, making it seem like she is / was all about " developing" and not " defending" her title or trying g to dearly hold onto the #1 ranking..

by Anonymousreply 563September 6, 2023 6:59 PM

I’d be curious to see how much a successful player like a Sabalenka or a Medvedev is actually able to bank of their prize winnings. Even if they “live” in Monaco, they’ve got to pay something in taxes right off the bat. Then they have a team of probably at least half a dozen (trainers, physios, psychologists, etc) whom they have to not only compensate but also fly around the world all year long. The expenses must add up to the low millions annually, no?

And to wit, how do you manage to get by if you’re ranked like 100th or instead of top 10?

by Anonymousreply 564September 6, 2023 7:32 PM

only top ranked players make bank.

by Anonymousreply 568September 6, 2023 8:52 PM

by Anonymousreply 569September 6, 2023 8:53 PM

"Do the players get paid for each stage of the tournament they progress through? I read sablenka gets 775k for going through to the semis, does she get that PLUS another sum if she advances to the finals?"

The players get once after the tournament ends for them. Not sure if the tournament pays everyone after the entire tournament is over, or if they payout to each player as each player is eliminated. Regardless, it's only one payment. In other words, for example, they don't pay all the players who won in the first round the amount for players who lose in the second round (which they're guaranteed at that point) and then pay an additional amount for those who win again equaling the difference between the payment for second round losers and and third round losers.

$775k is not a one-time payment for Sabalenka winning the quarterfinal and advancing to the semis, separate from winning all of her previous rounds. It encompasses the five wins she's had in the tournament. Any time you see a prize money payout chart - the amounts are always the amount that a player will get for losing in a specific round, encompassing all the wins up to that point.

by Anonymousreply 580September 6, 2023 10:10 PM

Rublev & Sinner would have to get incredible luck to ever win a slam.

by Anonymousreply 581September 6, 2023 10:46 PM

Sinner is still young. But he doesn't seem to have the killer instinct.

by Anonymousreply 582September 6, 2023 10:49 PM

Rublev's goal should be a Slam SF. I don't think he quite has what it takes to win a Slam, even with a busted draw. Great career though. I frequent Talk Tennis forums and everyone who isn't a multiple Slam champ is essentially labeled a "mug" and a failure. Lol.
