I’ll be honest that I have no clue who joe would be in that film, but I do think it’s interesting that he followed Natasha and Joni back to back pre strikes kind of out of nowhere so I’m going to just predict he might’ve been cast in that

While I now do not support and like bash all of those reasons have to do with how he has treated joe and handled the break up. Full offense to him, but while I agree he's never said anything too horrible, he also doesn't seem bright enough to navigate the insanity of the fans and thinks putting Ben Hope hate club in his profile is enough to get everyone off his back for some awkwardly worded comments. Just like he thinks emotes or a dumb saying will make people move on from the HP thing. I get what he means, like the comment about how Ben wasn't welcomed into the HS world by the characters, but he just words it terribly sometimes.

The way he handled the aftermath of the game news was really informative to what he's like as a person. I was never particularly invested in him, but that was pretty much the last straw for me. Took days to apologize, ignored the antisemitism part entirely, quote tweeted a trans person and painted a target on their back to the point where they deleted their account.

R31 as someone who actually doesn’t blame him at all for being in the game, and thinks the pile on before he said anything was really unfair, the apology was not well handled. He chose to reply directly to a fan who then got piled on a bit, misgendered them in the process, didn’t offer to make a token donation, for instance. Tbf his PR should’ve handled it, though.

Jack Barton in particular really drives in how mediocre Bash is as an actor. David is much more one-dimensional than Ben, yet Jack did more with his character and was much more compelling than Bash.

He doesn’t have any chemistry with Kit either, and Kit and joe both manage good onscreen chemistry with basically anyone they act opposite (minus rhea as well, actually). To varying levels of course; I don’t see a lot of natural onscreen chemistry between joe and Yaz or Kit and will, for instance. But Bash and Rhea are the two who “click” with absolutely no one onscreen

I think the chemistry between Joe and Yaz is passable and think Kit and Will have good chemistry (the scene near the end they had together was good especially), but I think the problem with Bash and Rhea is that it's hard for other actors to click with them because of their acting styles. Bash underemotes to the point where he looks dead in the eyes (example, when Bash tells Nick that he was going through stuff, there is literally no emotion in his face or eyes) and Rhea overemotes to the point where it comes off like a parody performance from an entirely different show and makes the scenes with any of her scene partners, who know what kind of show they're acting on and act accordingly, feel discordant.

R49 I think it’s all relative. I think Kit and will are both good actors who do good acting opposite one another but I don’t sense super strong acting chemistry. As I said above, both Kit and joe are good opposite everyone minus bash and rhea, so Yaz and will were my examples of chemistry I think is closer to passable or pretty good than actively great. Neither Yaz and joe, or Kit and will take me out of a scene because of shocking lack of chemistry, it’s just not as strong as say, Jenny and joe together or Kit and jack together (let alone joe and Kit).

But agreed that rhea overacts like crazy and clearly internalized that her eyes are her best feature, and bash both underemotes and also overdramatizes in all his scenes.

Only big difference in these bed scenes is that they’d be shirtless, and I don’t think either of them have any issues with shirtlessness.

But either way I think they were filming kissing scenes very early into knowing one another, certainly before they got very close, so while the cameras up close are awkward I think overall that’s all they’ve ever mentioned as being weird, not specifically kissing one another.

One of the big issues in the WGA strike is ensuring the use of writers rooms. They don't want a show runner to get all the writing credit, but instead to employ actual writers rooms. Alice could hire actual screen writers to turn her existing concepts into scripts and then just have final approval at the end. But of course, they have to do it all themselves and then complain about it constantly.

Every time I see Alice whining I remember Will talking about balancing his A-levels with his S1 shooting schedule, taking 2-3 hour long Chinese exams in the morning and then making the one hour trip to Slough to shoot in the afternoon. If teenagers can figure it out, so can she.

R132 How to Cook a Bear (Disney+ show). Gustaf Skarsgård is the lead and there's not much news about the casting. There is a young character, but from the looks of it's a young boy, who is a Sámi boy so surely they wouldn't cast a Brit... The Revenge (which I can't tell if it's even in English? and the casting is out for the most part). And The Girl Who Disappeared gave me pause at first because the distributor does a lot of Netflix projects but while the book was originally set in England, they changed it to a Finland, so I doubt it.

I didn't do a super deep dive, but just looked to see if any of the people working on any of the projects followed him, which they don't. All those shows are currently filming, could be more I guess but haven't looked that deeply.

Connor has left Milan so I’m expecting him to pop up in Finland any time now. Maybe we will get a clearer idea of what Bash is doing then

I’d say he’s most similar to Joe (vulnerable but a bit wry) so their scenes work best but he does the the introspective, gentle Nick scenes well too. Yaz gives him nothing to work with, and he really works for it. Fundamentally, I don’t think he has amazing chemistry with any of them but is great in scenes together - someone pointed out he and Jenny could be really complimentary and I think that’s true

R146 I think the reason Joe is the best opposite will (and the reason will and Kit scenes fall a bit short — great acting but neither of their strongest chemistry) is because Alice just makes the Tao and nick scenes so needlessly corny, whereas the Charlie and Tao ones feel more real. The second one about Charlie was quite good and I felt the sincerity made sense there (and thus their chemistry), but I think if she’d kept the mildly adversarial, Tao finds nick annoying but begrudgingly likes how well he treats Charlie thing, it would’ve felt more natural for the characters and allowed Kit and wills comedic skills to shine. Kit and Will did a really good job and tried their best but some of their corny dialogue in Paris didn’t fit their character dynamic. Once more, all successes thanks to the actors and none to Alice.

I think joe just nails Charlie’s sweetness and vulnerability so much that Tao being a total sap about him makes sense in a way his openness to nick doesn’t. It’s the same reason Charlie, who might otherwise be the most annoying depressing damsel in distress Mary sue character, is so genuinely someone you want to root for in the show. I wish Alice kept Tao being a bit more of a prickly cunt, because I think with the combination of that and his genuinely tender scenes he would’ve been so likable and Will would’ve shone even more. But as the person who originally said tori and Tao have a slightly adversarial “he’s my brother/he’s my best friend” dynamic in s3 with some funny tense scenes and some vulnerable ones is something I think both Jenny and Will would nail.

I don’t really understand how the TikTok fans work because they’re so removed from Twitter and I only downloaded the app again after S2. Secondly, I just wanted to share my thoughts about this scene, as it’s been creating a LOT of discussion in the comments!

This will be a montage lasting a few pages, so I wanted to encourage you guys to not jump to any huge conclusions about what exactly they’re doing or not doing. You'll get a bit more context as the montage progresses, but it's also intended to allow you to make your own conclusions and inferences.

In crafting the tone of the sex scenes in this volume, I've aimed to find a middle ground between an immediate fade-to-black, and a graphic or hyperrealistic sex scene (I have no problem generally with either of these approaches towards sex in media, but I don’t feel either are right for the tone of Heartstopper). What follows here will be like the ‘first time' sex scene - a montage of small intimate/sensual moments, jumping through time, and it will not always be clear what precisely they’re doing and who’s doing what, and that’s okay and intentional. It’s also worth saying that penetrative sex is not the ultimate end goal for everyone, and that’s not the purpose of this scene. (That’s not to say N&C won’t be doing that, but that’s not why this scene exists.) The main purpose of this scene was to show that Charlie has reached a point in his mental health journey and relationship with Nick where he felt comfortable removing his shirt during sex. As for the actual contents of this scene - the intention is for people to be able to make their own conclusions, and infer what is happening, reading between the lines (or the panels I guess!) but ultimately take away that N&C are having a loving and intimate night together, and that’s what matters!

While Vol 5 doesn’t educate its readers about the exact practicalities of queer sex, it does (I hope) educate readers about trust, respect, consent, and emotional care during sexual experiences… that’s what I’ve been trying to achieve, anyway!

Sorry that’s a lot, but I hope that makes sense, and maybe I’ll be able to talk about it a bit more once the scene has finished! I know you guys have a lot of feelings and thoughts about this scene - it’s almost the end of Vol 5, after all, and it’s a very big emotional moment for N&C! I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about it too! So if you feel a different way about this scene or any other scene in Heartstopper, or you don’t like how it plays out, that’s totally okay. Alice said on Tumblr recently when answering a question about season 3 that Volume 4 is heavily focused on Charlie’s recovery journey. They’ve also said that they envision being able to tell the whole story in 4 seasons.

So I think season 3 will be Charlie-led basically covering volume 4 and then assuming they have a 4th season, will cram in volumes 5 and 6 to the point where Nick leaves for uni.

In my head, it’s going to rush Charlie’s story far too much if it is just season 3, so I hope the recovery story goes into a 4th season and as part of the recovery, the increasing intimacy with Nick.

And as so many are saying, cut out all the unnecessary side characters like Imogen. Alice needs to bring Charlie front and centre with Nick - it is their story. Joe and Kit can turn anything to magic, particularly in scenes together and she’d waste such an opportunity if she doesn’t use them to their full potential.

R310 All of what you enumerated, could have been really interesting and profound if dealt with more nuance and maturity. Even the Ben and Charlie storyline was bad, IMO. They could have done so much more with that. If you get passed all of that, I liked that Charlie was more confident this season and that Nick was more open with his sexuality. But the coming out story and even Charlies ED is not enough to write a whole season. You need characteristics and other issues/a deeper understanding of the characters and what they want to do with their lives. Nick and Charlie are ultimately sweet but boring because they have nothing going on except their love for each other.

Especially since his anorexia is coupled with OCD, obsessing over things manifesting in his arranging foods and fixating on calories as a means of control, getting irritable and distant from nick and wanting to be with him all the time variably as a result of the illness, his conflict with his mother over it, things like that are so complex and rich and could be a huge bulk of the season if done right. But it’s Alice so she won’t do it right, I think. For instance if Alice had included a scene if Charlie struggling with the fact that he couldn’t control nicks coming out experience and not eating this season; like coming home and fixating in his room after the David scene, and THEN his dad knocking on his door to offer him dinner and him refusing. But she’s so surface level.

I feel like the biggest compliment people have about sidelining Charlie’s story is constantly setting Kit up to win awards over Joe. I actually think s2 was very balanced between Nick & Charlie’s characters, and also had way too much focus on random side characters. But I don’t think Kit/Nick had a single award winning scene. Maybe coming out to his dad. But Joe/Charlie had great scenes too. I think between intentionally missing the Emmy window for this year, and not calling this an Emmy Winning show in any of their promo, Netflix has decided the Children’s Emmy’s isn’t what this show needs. I don’t expect Kit to win any big awards for s2. Joe and Kit might both receive a few random nominations. But the novelty of a PG rated gay show has worn off and this season just isn’t award worthy.

I love both Joe and Kit. I enjoy this show. But I’m not expecting Heartstopper to win any awards for s2. And I don’t expect s3 or s4 to be any better. Alice is the writer after all.

Personal opinion obviously, but I think if they hadn't missed the window Kit could have won with what he did in the last scene with Joe. He's going to have a really solid reel between the dinner scene and that last scene, plus stuff like the fight with his brother, but too much time is going to go by between this season and when they vote on it. There's enough time for a shiny new thing to pop up.

R319 I think for me it’s not about the specific scenes overall, to be clear. It’s how Charlie versus nick are written to be played. Because of Charlie’s mental health issues, anorexia, OCD, and past bullying, he severely represses what’s wrong with him. So while I genuinely think Kit and joe both acted the absolute hell out of this season and would coin flip for an Emmy for them, I think a lot of the Kit praise is tied to the fact that he’s allowed to cry, be very visibly upset or angry or worried, in scenes that joe isn’t. Which is why I think so many people wish joe had some solo scenes, not because Kit had so many but because a big part of Charlie’s character is him keeping it together for others, even in the final scene where nick is crying and extremely emotional and joe does the tight smiles and keeping it together. Both very in character, but nicks emoting is way more appealing to awards voters. So having a solo scene where Joe can be gasping crying, obviously upset and spiraling, something like that would’ve been way more fair and equal in appeal.

It reflects that in that most of the critical praise favoring Kit wasn’t tied to him being a more naturalistic actor or something that’s just them thinking he’s overall a better actor than joe, it was often tied to the wide range of emotions and emotional openness he showed as nick. I say this as someone who thought joe gave one of the best first performances possible but did think Kit performed better in season one — in season two, having read the comics and knowing what Alice was aiming for with Charlie’s repression, I legitimately think Joe absolutely matched Kit in acting merit. But I do think nicks storyline and ability to emote absolutely set Kit up for more praise and awards than joe this season. They’re both phenomenal and the only shame of the show is they have to compete for awards, because they carry this far more than anyone else

Which again, is why Alice should’ve shown more joe scenes where it’s clear he’s not actually past his self harm and anorexia. If you’re just a show watcher, I might presume as them that Charlie had issues with self harm and not eating in the past but that as he said in the last scene, he was done with that (and after all, he ate after passing out in the louvre, so maybe just stress not eating as opposed to anorexia). It’s only if you realize no, Charlie is actually full blown in the middle of an eating disorder and self harm, lying to nick, and the last scene is him pretending it’s all fine and repressing to spare nick any trouble that you realize what an absolute masterclass joe is also putting on, and that him not “rising” to kits level of emotion as nick is a purposeful and artfully done character choice they both made instead of just joe not being able to emote the way Kit can.

But what I mean is that critics and people just watching the show, if they presume Charlie is actually past his issues, would watch that scene and see Joe smiling “too soon” within the scene, crying less and looking a bit less distraught in the face, et cetera and think he just doesn’t have kits emotional range. It isn’t hepled by him smiling and wanting to say I love you right after, which feeds into the “these are past issues” narrative. When if Alice had actually fleshed out his issues and it was clear that joes acting in the last scene was actually meant to be a portrayal of someone with deep mental health, self harm, and eating disorders lying to someone he loves to spare them and putting on a brave face, I think he’d get a LOT more praise for the nuance he did that with.

I just really don’t get why Alice is treating Charlie’s issues so cloak and dagger, and the audience has to learn about them only as nick does. We saw nick struggling with his sexuality and thinking he was queer alone before Charlie ever realized and they kissed, and it was no less emotionally effective. In fact, seeing nick confused and alone and scared was even more emotionally effective. Seeing how badly Charlie is suffering and hurting alone before he goes out trying to focus on supporting his friends and nick and refusing to discuss his own issues would be extremely compelling and again, give Joe an actual chance to shine. I refuse to read awards worthy because I presume it’s Reddit 2.0 where they act like joe is blessed to even share the stage with Kit, who is actings savior. Kit is fucking amazing but the disparity in skill they imply simply doesn’t exist. And ngl it’s crazy to me they feel fine making such bold statements as Kit being more innately talented based on a singular role with uneven writing that is joes first ever job.

I’m skimming the linked thread now and it’s not as bad as Reddit, the discussion is more nuanced than anything happening over there. And there’s only really one comment I would classify as being negative about Joe. Everyone else that mentioned him enjoyed his acting.

R339 yeah but it was very subtle and seemed more like “I’m upset and can’t stomach anything” than “when I feel out of control I restrict my eating”. Kit absolutely killed the scene of him searching up am I gay and being confused and upset in s1, and I think it added context and depth and made him running away after the first kiss, and the “I’ve just been so confused” speech, so much more sympathetic. I honestly think the audience seeing how deeply Charlie is struggling and hurting and realizing that he was lying to nick in that last scene saying he was past it and would tell Nick if it ever came up again, would’ve been award worthy for joe, and would’ve added so much depth and richness to the season.

R343 I am sure it’s more nuanced but even them enjoying joe still means they’re saying he’s not as good as Kit., I just think Joe suffers from Alice refusing to consider some people are just show watchers and that “wait and see” is a stupid way to run a show. Not going to beat a dead horse about this but I think one of the things that makes both Kit and joes performances so good is the level of nuance. If I hadn’t known Charlie was lying to Nick and was not in fact even close to ok in the last scene, I’d also probably think Kit gave an easily better performance. It’s knowing that Charlie is lying, that he’s suffering so intensely he’ll need to be hospitalized, and that joe is playing someone lying very convincingly to be self sacrificing that makes me appreciate his performance so much in that scene.

[bold]Can you explain the process where you (and a team?) go from the graphic novels to a finished script?[/bold]

So this process is just me, exec producer Patrick Walters, and (in S2 and S3) story consultant Lauren James! We start by mapping out our ideas for the season, particularly focusing on the character and relationship arcs. We get that into a very rough plot plan, usually done in bullet points. Then we do 'scene breakdowns' together, which is where we map out each episode scene by scene, planning exactly what happens in each scene. This changes a lot when I'm writing, of course, but it takes a lot of the pressure off me while I'm writing as I don't have to worry about what's happening next! The writing process itself is all me, sitting at my laptop with Lofi Girl on in the background. There's lots of editing after that, again with help from Patrick and Wren! ❤️

[bold]Several scenes from the comics were direct adaptations to screen. What change from the comics were you the most excited for?[/bold]

Probably the final scene of ep 8 being moved to where it is! In the comic, that scene is shorter and it falls just before the Paris trip. But I was super excited to make more of that moment and treat it with the seriousness and emotionality it needed. It also PERFECTLY sets up the journey of S3. So I was very very happy wiht that change!

[bold]What was the biggest difference between filming season 1 and season 2?[/bold]

The pressure and outside expectation, definitely. In season 1, we were all in our own little bubble, creating something we were passionate about but had no idea how the rest of the world would feel. In S2, we felt like the eyes of the world were on us, and that was a much more stressful experience!

[bold]How did knowing season three was already approved affect your plans and script for season two?[/bold]

It was SUPER helpful because I knew I didn't have to resolve every storyline this season. I could do that cliffhanger at the end of ep 8, I could leave Darcy's situation a bit open-ended and uncertain, I didn't have to rush through Isaac's journey, etc. I knew I'd have time to continue with various storylines in S3.

Isaac's story felt pretty easy to craft as I relate to him so much. But it also makes a lot of sense within the context of the show. Heartstopper is a romance and it has three couples at its core - but then there's Isaac, who's kind of left out of that. Even if he wasn't ace/aro, that would definitely make him feel a bit left out! Exploring how Isaac feels about being surrounded by couples felt very obvious to me when writing S2, and tying those feelings into his experience of being ace/aro made a lot of sense too. How Isaac feels being surrounded by couples is how a lot of ace/aro people feel just existing in a romance/sex obsessed world!

[bold]If you could make one of your other novels into a movie/tv show, which book would it be? Why?[/bold]

I think Radio Silence or Loveless would make good limited series, or Solitaire or IWBFT could be a good movie. But to be perfectly honest, I'm very much in two minds about trying to do more adaptations of my works! I've had such an incredible experience with Heartstopper, I would be very afraid that nothing would quite live up to it. But never say never!

I spoke to Bradley about James being autistic - while I didn't intentionally write James to be autistic, Bradley wanted him to be, and I am very much in support! I'm still in the process of planning out the events of Vol 6, and I'm unsure what new characters will appear there - so it's definitely possible that there will be more!

When writing the comics, the show is always in the back of my mind, knowing that what I'm writing/drawing will probably be adapted for live action eventually. I try not to let it affect my choices too much, as I want to allow the comic to just be what it is, and if it's different from the show, that's perfectly fine! Sometimes it even helps me with dialogue, being able to think about how the actors would deliver a line, and if it would sound awkward.

[bold]What is something you think the actors do really well when it comes to portraying their characters?[/bold]

I think all of the lead cast are so good at playing the characters' underlying fears and anxieties, and all the experiences and emotional baggage they have without having to outright state it in dialogue. They've all got such strong emotional intelligence and they all go out of their way to read between the lines of the script and add so many layers to the characters! Kit and Joe are totally unafraid of the emotional sincerity of the show - they give everything they've got to the emotional scenes and the romantic moments, and consequently make us all feel SO much. It'd be so easy to underplay those moments and make the show feel super cheesy and silly, but to me their performances feel so deeply believable and real.

[bold]What's a good tip for writers when writing emotions?[/bold]

Well... everything characters do and say is fuelled by emotions! So this is a bit of a broad question. I suppose thinking about big emotional scenes, where characters are feeling a LOT... my advice is that not everything needs to be stated or explained in dialogue. SO much can be said just from a facial expression or body language, or from a character breaking down or being unable to speak any words at all.

The first thing that comes to mind is expanding all of the characters. While N&C are still the main characters, season 2 feels much more like an ensemble piece than S1. I really wanted to delve into as many of the characters' psyches as we could - which is tricky when you've only got 30 mins per episode and 7 main characters! But I think we achieved that. Volume 3 was the perfect book to do that with, because the Paris Squad are all together through so much of it. It feels really different to S1, in my opinion, and that's really cool and fun! And I think S3 will take on a different & new vibe again, and I'm really excited about that.

[bold]I’d love to know about the writing process around Charlie’s ED - both in the comic and in the show (specifically season 2). The presentation of his ED is so tactfully done but - for me - felt so true to life. I’d love to know how you captured that.[/bold]

I'm really glad you feel that way! I first began exploring Charlie's experiences with his eating disorder way back when I wrote Solitaire in 2011. So I've been working on that element of his story for a long, long time, and in that time I've done a lot of research about EDs, and about presenting EDs and mental illness in general in fictional stories. I always knew I wanted to place very small hints as to his ED from season 1, and to see it grow slowly, so that it doesn't feel like it suddenly appears out of nowhere (and I was very glad to see people picked up on those hints in S1!). In Heartstopper, I wanted to tell the story of Charlie's mental health without the show (or comic) becoming intensely triggering for people who've experienced the same things. For me, the key to doing that is knowing when it's helpful to 'show' the audience what's happening, and when you should just 'tell' the audience what is happening, e.g. through a dialogue conversation, rather than forcing them to see it firsthand.

[bold]Were there other themes you wanted to explore in the comic or was the story a no-brainer from the beginning?[/bold]

I think it's always been a no-brainer! I've had a very clear idea of the broad structure of the plot from the very start. If anything, I've just added more and more to it as time goes on... hence why we're at SEVEN YEARS of Heartstopper

I don't think it's likely we'll ever do a 'flashforward' in the Heartstopper show... I love the mystery of N&C's lives 'beyond school', us not knowing much about what happens there, just knowing that they're still together, in love (getting a dog, etc). And honestly, I could never cast new people to play N&C in the show... Kit and Joe ARE the TV Nick and Charlie, it'd feel so bizarre to see anyone else play them!

I recently saw a random leak that didn’t seem super credible that said Wanda was transported to an alternate dimension called the Witches Road at the end of Dr Strange 2 (that was the red light when the temple was collapsing). Only witches can enter to Witches Road. And a lot of the plot of Agatha will be Agatha, Billy, and the coven traveling the road to rescue Wanda.

This was posted by a big Wanda fan and seemed more like wishful thinking than an actual leak. But it’s possible the season could end with Billy and Wanda reconnecting.
