Out of curiosity I know early days on the forum we thought bash dumped Joe. Now a fair few people think joe dumped bash, but didn’t visit expecting to, so there was a fight or ultimatum or something. How do people feel, or do they think it was something else

I originally thought Bash dumped Joe, but was less convinced than most people on DL. I’m now heavily leaning towards Joe dumping Bash, but for good reason. If Bash was a shit boyfriend and Joe gained the self confidence to stand up for himself, good for Joe.

From bash's one interview thing he just comes across as feeling very wronged, though Joe comes across as someone who finally stood up for himself. That Teen Vogue interview mentioned how much he had completely changed, though also Kit mentioned if he likes someone he really likes someone, so I don't think he just lost feelings for Bash either. Basically, Bash was a shit and Joe ended it.

My prediction for S3 is that Ep 1-4 will be events from Vol 4 before Charlie goes to Hospital (Beach, I Love You, Nelson Family Vacation, Return to School, Nick's birthday, etc). Ep 5-6 will be Charlie in Hospital. Ep 7 will be This Winter. And Ep 8 will be New Years Eve. I also think that Ep 8 will end with Charlie talking to his therapist (or maybe writing it in a journal if Alice is stupid and tries to match the comics) about how his life is way better now because he has a real support network not just one person by his side. And we'll see a montage of all the cast members and the little ways they have supported Charlie over the course of the season.

The longer the strikes go on the more things will be delayed in order to spread what they have out, it’s just odd to me that Bash’s thing didn’t get a specific month.

This is total speculations, but I actually have a theory about why Joe and Bash broke up that might be sort of controversial. I think Joe wanted to make their relationship public. Joe has a lot of anxiety about being famous in general and having to try to keep a ltr secret was probably very stressful. I also think Bash gaslit Joe into believing that staying private was entirely Joe's idea. But I also think Bash wants to stay in a glass closet forever. He's never going to officially come out and he's never going to have an entirely public relationship. Bash is basically a young Richard Maiden.

I could see Joe not wanting to be in a secret relationship indefinitely, and Bash spinning a tale about Joe trying to out Bash to his friends and family. Also Bash making lizard shirt 2.0 while still being in a glass closet and not wanting to admit he ever dated Joe could be a reason that none of the cast would want to support the shirt.

His ED didn’t need to be a plot twist, just something he was hiding. Alice kind of writes it as a manifestation of OCD in the comic. Giving joe scenes where he’s obsessing over nicks coming out being perfect followed by him rejecting food and obsessing alone in his room would’ve been way better

The ED resonated like crazy with one of my friends to the point he didn’t enjoy the show. Not because it was bad but because it was too painful. He said all the jumper borrowing wasn’t cute to him, being cold was something that is very real when you’re restricting (projecting there a bit as I think Alice just wrote it for cute). Tbh I was surprised by how much it got to him

I think the most valid complaint I’ve seen about it is that it felt a bit cheap to use it as almost a plot twist Nick reacts to rather than a shitty thing Charlie deals with, and that not having scenes where joe acts it out and shows how Charlie tries to hide it made it feel like nick angst rather than something shit for the person with the ED. that’s why I think adding moments of Charlie showing it and then hiding it would be effective. This is a really weird example, but I’m thinking a bit of the Emma Thompson s scene from love actually. Showing someone dealing with something shitty and then hiding or repressing it for the sake of people they love is really emotionally effective and I think better grasps the way Charlie is meant to handle his ED in the comic, and would fit into Alice’s intended storyline of Charlie repressing his own problems to support Nick

Anyway - I really enjoyed the 2 seasons. Loved it. Great cast, great story. Very non-offensive. I haven't watched it before and didn't know anything about the show apart from that it featured a gay relationship. It is very sweet and uplifting and wouldn't it be an amazing world to come out in an environment like that! With supportive friends and parents. Even the bullies in Heartstopper were pretty tame.

I was quite surprised too because it's my story without the happy bits. I went to boarding school and when I was 16 my allocated roommate for the year and I had a relationship throughout the year. He pursued me and was also 16.

I was very confused because he was straight as far as everybody knew. This was in 1986. He was very good looking and "straight" and got lots of female attention. His name was Wayne. He was also one of the star rugby players (not the captain) and talked me into joining the team because he loved rugby so much and wanted to share it. I was more into track and was a fast sprinter like Charlie so they put me on the rugby team as a wing. I hated it. Very violent. Over the year we got closer and closer and then things just developed so we spent most of our time together and fell in love. He fell in love with me before I understood what was taking place and then once I realised I was into it hook, line and sinker. He would have been bisexual I imagine. Nobody would ever have guessed as he had had a string of girlfriends. I am gay. We eventually progressed to "young boys sexual adventures" anywhere we thought we wouldn't get caught.

But there were no supportive friends or parents. We had to hide everything but of course some people knew what was going on and talk started. It all blew up at the end of the year because it was so much pressure hiding everything and he couldn't figure out what to do or how to be because both of us had no idea what we were (there was no information about being gay or bisexual in 1986) or what was going on within ourselves and then we had a serious fight and split and never spoke to each other again. I was devastated and so was he. It took me years to get over it and I would happily pick up where we left off if given the chance even now. I don't know what happened to him. We live in different countries now. I can't locate him anywhere online.

Anyway that's my story and so I really enjoyed seeing how it could have been different if the story had taken place in another time. I'm 53 now.

R178 that’s really moving. I don’t have a Nick / Charlie story and I’m 29 but I did grow up in the country and was bullied for being gay before I was even out (or had a handle on what was going on). It was mainly by the boys in the footy team - the antithesis of Nick Nelson. So Charlie really speaks to me. On top of that some of Joe’s (Charlie’s) experiences now mirror some of the shit in my life from a decade ago (bad break up, older guys who I shouldn’t have dated etc.).

The only story I have is I liked a guy in high school and was too scared to even consider going after him so just ignored it though found out years later he was gay. I kinda regretted not being brave enough to ask, though also didn't want to be the victim of a hate crime. So sadly no high school romance for me. I'm not saying he'd actually date me since he was popular and the drum major and wore tight little white pants, but who knows. Also not sure how I didn't figure out he was gay at the time, but I was young and the town was very small and being gay just wasn't acceptable.

As much as we bag on HS sometimes, I can see how it could really help out the younger generation.

This was in New Zealand in 1986 and at the time homosexuality was still a criminalised act until August 8th of 1986 when it was legalised for 16 year olds and above. That was over halfway through our relationship. So that was a lot of added pressure, scariness, secrecy and shame. I didn't even know the word gay and I certainly didn't know what I was or what Wayne was. He was bisexual for sure.

I have to admit that watching Heartstopper made me very sad at what could have been. If we were16 now in 2023 had had a chance at the relationship again then I'm pretty sure we would have stayed together for some time after school. I know this sounds a bit selfish but it was lovely to see my story with a beautiful outcome. But also very sad for me. He was my first love and I was his. I still can't believe to this day he talked me into joining the rugby team.

I thought the actors playing Charlie and Nick are both gorgeous and adorable. They have great chemistry together. Lots of bulge from Nick in his rugby kit too! Particularly when the wind blows the right way! I have a nephew the same age so I won't say anything more about them because I don't want to sound like a perve. All the actors were perfectly cast and who wouldn't want Olivia Coleman as your mum! The lesbians were fun too. I'm really looking forward to season 3. Obviously real life isn't quite as perfect and supportive as Heartstopper but it makes me realise how far things have come since I did it for reals in 1986. What a different world it is today and I am thrilled for young gays and a bit jealous too. Hopefully the fighting and standing up for gay people which I have done over the decades has helped in a small way to progress gay acceptance for future generations.

Solitaire is a truly insane book that Alice wrote when they were 17 and concludes with Tori being actively involved in burning Higgs to the ground so Truham has to become a co-ed school. It’s crazy. Nick&Charlie was a spin-off novella written years before they started the comic and the characters are entirely different. The entire plot of the story could have been resolved in a five minute conversation, while comic Nick and Charlie are unnaturally good communicators.
