What’s the problem with “*an* OnlyFans”?

From R12 of the below-linked thread:

[quote] what’s the problem with “*an* OnlyFans”? I’m being serious. I see so many people complain and mock using that expression but I don’t know what it is they object to. You wouldn’t say *a* Onlyfans.

[quote] What’s the issue? I missed the discussion about what’s wrong with it and I’m not being critical of you, I’m just trying to figure out why people think it’s wrong.

There's nothing wrong with it. This usage is found all over the Internet and, with a new concept, usage is guided primarily by language users rather than linguistic authorities because the authorities have yet to speak on this subject. "He has an OnlyFans" is totally fine.

I think zero wrong with it. It's your business. If you're not hurting anyone, go for it.

The issue is that people put quotation marks around the word an for some reason. Does he have "an" Only Fans? What is the point of the quotation marks?

by Anonymousreply 3August 9, 2023 8:38 PM

I think the people using the quotation marks are attempting to bring notice to what they view as a malapropism.

When people say they don’t a Facebook or an Instagram what they mean is that they don’t have an account… efficiency of language pretty quickly resulted in dropping the noun account.

That, to some, sounds odd and grating, probably.

‘R4, you ARE goals.

The problem is you are either desperate for attention or money. Astute people will be able to pick up that you don’t have the best discretion in your personal affairs.

I think it's just a DL running gag that may eventually run out of steam ... or it may run along for ever and ever.

Don't have

The question wasn’t about what’s wrong with someone creating and using Onlyfans as a platform. The question was why posters here say “an” Onlyfans as if that’s the stupidest thing they’ve ever heard. And I asked the OP on another thread why they did it in a friendly way and they created a thread about it instead of just telling me why they posted “an” Onlyfans.

Why are people putting quotes around “an”? Is it the “an” they object to or using Onlyfans without the word “account”? Because if it’s the latter, saying an “Onlyfans” to emphasize the missing “account” would make more sense.

Besides, people say all sorts of odd things with missing and superfluous words Brits say “in hospital” when Americans say “in the hospital”. And nearly everyone is guilty of saying they used an ATM machine or have an IRA account. That’s like saying “an automatic teller machine machine” or “an individual retirement account account”.

Even Fidelity does it!

I’m in school.

I’m in the school. You know the one - large doors, red brick.

There is nothing wrong with the syntax.

This is maybe two OCD type dataloungers who have low average IQ yet want to contribute to threads, stay in the game, yet have nothing clever to say.

I believe dopamine is involved.

Can I have an OnlyFans while wearing a bag on my head?

by Anonymousreply 12August 10, 2023 1:48 PM

Do you have "a" Friendster or "a" Vine?

by Anonymousreply 13August 11, 2023 3:29 AM

I don’t give an fuck either way.

by Anonymousreply 14August 11, 2023 3:34 AM

[quote] I don’t give "an" fuck either way.

by Anonymousreply 15August 11, 2023 3:41 AM

An OnlyFans page, an OnlyFans account, an OnlyFans (insert whatever the fuck it is here).

[quote] Do you have a twitter?

Do you have "a" X?

by Anonymousreply 17August 11, 2023 3:50 AM

There’s nothing wrong with it, OP, but it’s not for you. No scat content allowed.

by Anonymousreply 18August 11, 2023 3:54 AM

This is going to keep me up all night.
