The Gays and Tennis Part 153 - To the Hardcourts and U.S. Open
aka "The USA Open" on DL tennis thread.
Also is this where we talk about the Canadian Open, also known as the Canada Masters and currently branded as the National Bank Open presented by Rogers aka Rogers Cup?
As reported by R590 of the prior thread, "A. Zverev is facing more allegations of domestic abuse/beating, this time from his baby mama. The Berlin Prosecutor's office is set to issue a criminal order against him." Given that news, he is this thread's jinx cover boy.

Pretty sure Ilie Nastase also erased a ball mark on clay once when playing either McEnroe or Connors. He was a cunt, too.

It was übercunt Connors who erased the mark in the '77 US Open semis on green clay against Barazzutti. Connors ran over to Barazzutti's side of the court and rubbed out the mark before the umpire could even take a look at it.

Everyone loves Rubie! To be fair, he does seem like a super nice guy and easy to get along with. I think Rubie, Meddy and Karen are all good buds. Rubie was the godfather of Meddy's daughter and Karen was at the baptism in Moscow, as well and it didn't look like there was a lot of people attending, so...I like all three, though, Meddy is my favorite because he seems so adorably tortured (but also a genuinely nice guy).

This Netflix documentary (Eldorado: Everything the Nazis Hate) is not only a fascinating and eye-opening watch, but spends a lot of time von Cramm who, along with Big Bill Tilden, Brian Vahaly, Jan-Michael Vincent and a couple of other retired players (according to some lists Bobby Blair and Francisco Rodríguez), is all we have in terms of gay male tennis players (yes, our pantheon of officially out gay players is a very small one).
Some of the period tennis footage is great, and shows players who would be truly incredible players today if they had the same equipment and training regimen of this generation's players.
One of the many heart-breaking moments in the documentary is when von Cramm, having survived persecution in Nazi Germany under paragraph 175, tries to have his record expunged in postwar Germany, only to have post-Nazi judges confirm his criminal record—paragraph 175 was left on German books until 1994—meaning he could resume competing only in countries where a visa wasn't required.

It has been very clear for quite some time that Novaxxx has no time to lose for lesser tournaments. And that now includes Masters 1000. He skips a lot of them under various pretexts and when he does show up, you'd better get used to see him losing early, including against journeymen. This year he won the Aus Open, the French Open and was runner up at SW19. Now, if you look at the othe tournaments, he only played Dubai (lost in the semis), Monte-Carlo where he lost in R16, played in his hometown tournament where you would think he would be more motivated to go deep but still only played two rounds, then Rome where Rune took him out in the QF, then played RG and Wimbledon back to back two grand slam tournament and of course he made it all the way to the finals, one of which he won. And now he's skipping Toronto citing fatigue, but I guess lack of motivation might be a better way to qualify what he goes through or he needs more time to bounce back from the loss at the hands of his main rival.
On the other hand I wouldn't be entirely stunned if Alcaraz pulls a Steffi Graf next year with all four grand slams and make it golden at the Olympic games. I don't think the other new gen players have anything on him at least in BO5.

He is. But he's generally well-liked off-court; a nice guy. I really think it's because of college tennis, which he played for two or three years. High level D1 team matches are super bro-y obnoxious with tons of fist pumps and chattering and huge outcries to teammates on other courts. I think he's just so used to being super outwardly emotional.

"I thought Bratty Blow-Hard Ben Shelton was going to blow everyone once we got to the hard court season... Oops."
People got too excited after he made the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, only his second main draw of a Slam. His dad was a decent pro, and he progressed quickly. His freshman year at Florida, he played No. 5 or 6, and clinched the team title for the Gators. Sophomore year he climbed all the way to No. 1 in the lineup and won the NCAA singles title. Plus, he was doing well in Challengers (the AAA of tennis) - winning a few in succession - and plugging away earning a Top 100 ranking which enabled auto entry into Slams. And after all that, he makes a Slam QF at age 20, and shows off a few big weapons while doing so. So I get why people were excited. But, you could see that while he has potential, his game isn't anything remarkable for a pro, and there's still a LONG way to go in terms of game development. His post-AO season is about what I'd expect. He has ATP-tour level wins here and there in the first and/or second rounds of tournaments. But he hasn't really done much. He's now playing main draws all the time and seeing that there's a lot of guys with potential and weapons - and a big percentage of those guys aren't even the players who are noted as possible future Slam contenders, but just expected to have solid careers.
Good thing for Shelton is that a Slam QF got him so many points and so high in the rankings that he can play tour-level tournaments without qualifying at least through the 2024 AO. He really can't drop that far in the rankings until after the 2024 AO. And since he's not defending many points until then, he can still add points the remainder of this year as a bolster against all the points he'll lose if he doesn't equal or better his AO quarterfinal in 2024.
But as of right now he's struggling. Being a top junior, a top college player doesn't matter now. It's just a whole other world where there's so many good and hungry guys. He has to get his big result at the AO out of his head (if he hasn't already) and just grind and keep on working on his game.

R97 in other words, another Coco Gauff situation. Hyped to hell, whether he's ready or not.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | July 26, 2023 3:17 PM
|
"in other words, another Coco Gauff situation. Hyped to hell, whether he's ready or not."
Not totally the same, R98. Gauff was hyped pre-result. I guess beating Venus at Wimbledon is a "result," but it was an early round and Venus was well past her prime. She did go on to actually win tour-level tournaments and made a Slam final and earned a Top 10 ranking - things that generally deserve hype when a player is young. But she hasn't beat a lot of top players and the issues with her game are clear.
Something you have to realize about the Gauff hype. It's generally limited to ESPN and Tennis Channel commentators. International commentators are far less impressed. They recognize she's young and has done some noteworthy things, but they're not pressing her as the next great thing in tennis. Why is there still ESPN and TC hype? Tony Godsick. Coco is represented by Tony Godsick (tennis super agent and MJF's husband). Formerly of IMG, and now president of Federer's management group Team8. He's selling a product He has a lot of influence in the tennis world. Management can urge commentators to talk up clients; Godsick can certainly influence if Coco's matches are featured on TV and what court and what time she plays - not always, but in many instances. Even so, the ESPN/TC commentators are, more than before, voicing criticisms of Coco's game along with praise. The hype is fading.
Shelton is also represented by Team8, so that may be one reason for some hype. But I watch a lot of tennis and while of course Shelton's AO quarterfinal got noticed and people were talking about him, there's not really equivalent level of general hype compared to Gauff - especially after this last few months of super meh results. He's mentioned but there's not anywhere near as much pumping him up as the next great thing. He's just one of many young players with "potential."
by Anonymous | reply 99 | July 26, 2023 3:38 PM

I thought even Mary Jo has made recent comments about Coco needing to address her forehand.

I know it's expensive ON clothing, but it looks like a kit thrown together off the TJ Maxx "active wear" rack. Simple clothing is fine, not every kit has to be like those bold (many thought ugly) designs at the AO this year. But Mopsy's new kit is bland and boring.

Eubanks had his magical Mallorca and Wimbledon run, but seems to be regressing a bit - just in how he plays, his missed shots, and his attitude. He did win two matches in Atlanta, and one in DC, so he's not cratering by any means - it's too early to tell. But can he continue to have results consistent with what he's done this year or is going to slowly revert back to his jourmeyman status. Good thing for him is that he has a year or more to figure it out since he doesn't have a lot of points to defend for a while and his ranking can't drop that far until then.

The DC event is so badly organized. Instead of scheduling the Tiafoe-Shang match earlier on another court, they've set it on stadium court after the Murray-Fritz match that's being played now. How is the winner of the Tiafoe-Shang match supposed to have any gas left in his tank to play late tonight? Good luck with that.

How is the winner of the Tiafoe-Shang match supposed to have any gas left in his tank to play late tonight? Good luck with that. "
Given the short timeline, it's because they're trying to keep the next round opponents on a fairly similar trajectory. Fritz-Murray winer plays Thompson (who beat Eubanks in a match that was held over). Thompson was nearly finished or had finished before Fritz and Murray played. Tiafoe-Shang plays the winner of Evans-Shevchenko. That started after Thompson Eubanks and match just finished. Players will be gassed no doubt if they have to play twice. But I think they're trying to make sure the opponents who play each other next are somewhat similarly gassed based on start times - though they obviously can't control length of the match.
There's no great way to do it unless you just use all the courts and have marquee matchups on outer courts. A week-long tourney doesn't have a ton of room to maneuver if they lost a day. That's why they'll send players out so late if they can - just to finish that days' matches so they can be on track the next day.

Tiafoe does have some mental and physical training for this situation. When he won Houston earlier this year, he had a bye in the first round and then it basically rained all week until the weekend. He played 4 matches in two days to win the title. That sort of sucks, but at least he knows he can pull that sort of schedule out.

Playing one match a day is a luxury for pro tennis players. All of these men are used to playing multiple matches in a day from juniors/college. Also, all of them are fit enough to play at least two best of three set matches in a day.

That's a good point (R267). Before they were pros, all of these players played multiple times per day in juniors. And I'd think a lot have faced that situation as pros at random times. It's not ideal, but it shouldn't be THAT big of a deal every once and a while - especially when it's just best of 3 sets.

"Talk about a need for equal prize money - at the Canadian Open the winner of the men's draw gets 1 million in prize money, while on the women's side it is 450k. So uneven."
It's because the Canadian Open for men and women are separate ATP and WTA events. Each your has its own financials and own sponsors and women have less. Even combined events like Indian Wells, Miami, DC, essentially two separate tournaments held at the same site at the same time. There may be some common sponsors for the co-tournaments but the funding for prize money beyond that is generated by each tour independently and the WTA has less money. And the WTA almost always pays less than the ATP for their independent events. The money just isn't there.
The Slams, in contrast, are not co-ATP/WTA tournaments, but single tournaments with mens and womens divisions run by the ITF (International Tennis Federation), not by the WTA and ATP.
There was a huge gap in prize money at Washington DC - a relatively new combined event for the same reason. But, it seems like they're working on it. There's more combined events than ever, and, again, while they're ATP/WTA co-events and each tour has their own financials, sponsors, etc., a combined event allows tournament organizers to entice sponsors and investors to give money to the specific tournament which the tournament can then decide to distribute more equally. But not all the money overlaps and it's still an uphill battle.

I want to thank you, DL Tennis Mavens, for starting threads like this for non-Slam tournaments.
I didn't watch most non-Slam events because I didn't recognize many names, especially in the early rounds. A lot of them have some really obscure players. But since watching more non-Slams, I now know those "obscure" players.
For the poster who asked, my tickets are for Arthur Ashe Stadium. We will walk around the grounds, though.

R340, I had no words while watching that match! V looked like a woman from a local retirement community who wandered into a tennis tournament. The lipstick didn't match the dress and what the hell was that pink yarn in hair?? I think Madison was mesmerized by how slowly V was running and returning serves. It fucked with her timing. Or she didn't want to be that young whippersnapper who made Granny V run and break a hip.
Tiafoe out against Raonic. I think T has been playing too much. Same for Eubanks who got beat by Monfils who looked like he'd just finished mowing the lawn and decided to enter a tennis tournament. Although both matches featured quite a few tie breakers.

Slightly off topic, but I’ve been wondering for a while now why the WTA has (apparently) completely given up on Peng Shuai? I know the ATP only ever made slightly “me too”noises when the WTA withdrew all their tournaments from China, and the PTPA made nary a squeak, but now the WTA is holding tournies in China again.
Doesn’t it matter any more to the WTA that one of their players has been disappeared?
by Anonymous | reply 352 | August 8, 2023 8:52 PM

She hasn't been disappeared - she's come out and said that everything's fine... now of course, we know she is probably under pressure to do that but I figure the WTA realises that there isn't anything more they can do.. they made their protest.

Andrescu 's losing streak I can understand because she was a flash in the pan who got lucky against an out of shape and over confident Serena in 2019 HOWEVER, FAA's slide to the bottom of the barrel , certainly doesn't make sense
by Anonymous | reply 367 | August 9, 2023 2:14 AM

Andreescu was very dominant in 2019 - winning IW, Montreal and the US Open. Most of her losses that year were walkovers or withdrawing during the match. Her rise was very abrupt and her fall to mediocrity was very quick too. But almost all these recent one-slam winners (Kenin, Stephens, Ostapenko, Raducanu) have had big fall offs as well.
by Anonymous | reply 368 | August 9, 2023 3:18 AM
|
Andreescu won most of her big matches in three sets, she was never dominating any opponents, the way Serena did or Sabalenka can do when she doesn't choke. Andreescu was squeaking through tough matches and wins like that are always a matter of confidence and when you've had some bad losses the confidence goes away. Hence, Andreescu right now. She needs to get some momentum going again which comes from a lot of match play (she's been injured a lot) and some clutcch wins.

by Anonymous | reply 376 | August 9, 2023 2:55 PM

A lot of the stuff they have to wear is pretty ugly. I read one of the historic players (Lea Pericoli) talking about how she liked the days before sponsors because she had a lot of fun with making beautiful dresses and going on court fully made up. I googled her and they are rather lovely - plus fit well. Of course, she may have been a special case but I think only people like Federer, Sharapova got really nice designed stuff if they have a sponsor. Nowadays there's a lot of glo-bright synthetic sports material that doesn't necessarily fit well.

R377 research Ted Tinling. He would have loved DL. He was a bitchy old queen who loved the superstars, but still would dress all the great players on the 70's Virginia Slims tour. He made great dresses for BJK, Casals, Wade, you name it.

I love tennis history.
[quote]Despite Tinling's youth, Lenglen's father asked him if he would umpire one of her upcoming matches. He became her personal umpire for two years in between a short career as a player himself.
Can you imagine a player having their own personal umpire nowadays? The conflict of interest??
But his fashion credentials are A1 -
[quote] He also designed dresses for almost all of the great female players throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. His dresses were worn by the Wimbledon ladies' champion throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The last Wimbledon champion to wear a Tinling creation was Martina Navratilova in 1979 when she wore his designs to triumph in both the singles and doubles events. In 1983, Billie Jean King wore a Tinling dress in a final for the last time, when she reached the Wimbledon Mixed Doubles final. The last Tinling dress worn at Wimbledon was by Rosemary Casals in 1984, when she lost in the first round. Although he only ever designed dresses for Chris Evert's Federation & Wightman Cup appearances, he designed her wedding dress when she married John Lloyd in 1979.

"Did you just see that?" Collins said to the chair umpire. "Did you see what happened?"
Sakkari responded back that the ball "didn’t hit anyone," but Collins was not interested in any explanation.

LOL on Fritz. For a rich kid, he has seemingly learned zero about life, responsibility. I don't think his many times married mother is like that. What happened to the Mexican Mama he impregnated and dumped? Oh, the stories she could tell...

There’s no Macy’s fortune…it’s a public company with very little, if any, ownership interest held by a tangential relative of an old chain acquired many years ago.

Sabalenka is dangerously close to being out of this tournament. 6-7, 6-4 and currently down 3-5 in the third. I just turned it on and she's double-faulted twice in this set!

Why does Sabalenka moan until her ball hits the court on the opponent's side?! She's worse than Shriekapova was.

I posted that before Sabalenka lost, R478.
Kvitova just lost to Bencic who turned her ankle in an early game. Kvitova even went over with a bag of ice for ankle. Now, Bencic has to play again later today.
Why is there not rest days for this tournament? Guaff and Pegula are about to play. The winner of that match will play again today. Bencic and Samsonova (who just beat Sabalenka) will also play later today. I don't think it's due to rain because the men are also playing every day.

R479, Regular one week tour events do not allow for 'rest days' after Thursday. Traditional model is first three (or two) rounds over M-Th, Q, SF, F on Friday, Saturday, Sunday. This has been the way it has been for...ever? This is why if it rains at an outdoor event late in the week, two matches a day. Again, it is only on the pro tour that tennis players are generally not required to play more than one match a day. Professional tennis players should be more than capable of playing two, best of three matches in a day. They are getting paid very well, after all.

Billionaire heiress who drinks Heineken beats Gauff. Not mad, she isn't no. 4 in the world for nothing and is down to earth. Pegula is solid and doesn't choke despite not having elite weapons. Gauff is a good top 20 player but the hype isn't really justified beyond that.

I think Pegula is very likable. She could have relied on her father's billions and done nothing with her life. Instead, she became an excellent pro tennis player and has no attitude.

She grew up poor…she went the NCAA path, instead of straight from jrs. to to the tour…she won 2 collegiate titles for the most old-style elitist of Southern state universities…she actually has a worthwhile college degree, which is rare at her level of tennis…yet she’s still a total jerk.

Well, we'll have another new Masters 1000 winner this week.
I guess Sinner has the edge, but you could easily see any of the four making it - especially with Sinner looking shaky, so far at the sharp end of big tournaments. Personally, I'd like to see ADF or Demon take it. Both consistently hard workers who deserve a big pay day.

Sinner needed this win, he's fallen behind his two peers: Alcaraz and Rune over the last year and needed to step it up a notch, though to be fair, DeMinaur did a lot of the dirty work for him this week, similar to Jabeur clearing the way for Vondrousova at Wimbledon.

Why are so many top singles players suddenly playing more doubles in the past year or two? A large subset of top singles guys playing doubles had largely gone out of style in the 1990s. Granted, most still don't do it at Slams, but I've been surprised at all the top 20-30 players in doubles at regular tour events.
by Anonymous | reply 573 | August 14, 2023 12:05 AM

Doubles can be useful for net practice, lobs and cross court shots and it's a bit more fun and relaxed - I don't think the top players need money unless possibly the tournament is giving them a special appearance fee to play doubles (I wonder if that may be the case here since a surprising number are playing doubles..)
