Will it be "Nole" again or Carlitos?

Will Svee triumph or will it be disaster?

Thanks for the new thread, Oh Pee.

Hoping Hoo-Bee's coach, Craig Boynton, slapped him silly last night and he pulls a miracle out the bag today. He should be 2 sets up, goddamnit.

I'm becoming convinced Novak hypnotises opponents on court in slams. Its collapse after collapse on the rare occasions anyone gets a glimpse at a winning position against him.

by Anonymousreply 1July 10, 2023 6:44 AM

I have two positions when it comes to Novak: bend over or get on my knees.

[quote]SMDH. Bencic blew 2 match points against iga.

Bencic says that she would do the same thing again and that Svee just played well. From the linked video of the match points I think I agree.

[quote]Q. And you had no regret on match points? BELINDA BENCIC: No, I don't think so. I made two good returns, and of course tried to make her play. She came up with a great shot. That's well done from her. I would do the same thing again.

La Wintour is in the royal box.

I still think Berrettini has a chance of winning at Wimbledon in the next year or two. He's clearly not yet back to peak level after his long injury layoff. He needs a solid run and to structure his year around his best surface.

by Anonymousreply 67July 10, 2023 9:05 PM

To me, Rune looks like the poster child for "special needs", but à chacun son goût.

by Anonymousreply 68July 10, 2023 9:27 PM

For those complaining about cancelled matches because of the curfew, Novaxx (don't kill me) made a good point - why not start earlier? A noon start for Centre Court would give players an extra hour and a half.

by Anonymousreply 75July 10, 2023 11:39 PM

They discussed this on the last Tennis Podcast. They haven’t always started so late on the show courts, and the hosts proposed an hour earlier start.

We need to have Svitolina vs. Sabalenka in the final so everyone can get worked up over "The Shake" and whether in a grand Slam final in front of millions of viewers, Svitolina will stick to her no-shake policy for Russians. I wonder what would happen with Rybakina who is Russian but doesn't play for Russia.

by Anonymousreply 103July 11, 2023 3:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 104July 11, 2023 4:00 PM

The only thing that keeps me watching a Djokovic match after the first set is if his opponent wins that first set. I honestly can't tolerate watching Djokovic anymore. I'll try to get through the final on Sunday, but I'll bet going out for brunch will be a better option. There's always the replays after all.

by Anonymousreply 105July 11, 2023 4:10 PM

Safiullin is 25, has never been past the 2nd round in a slam before, is ranked 92 (highest 82), no tournament wins, doesn't even have a shirt sponsor. Very good run for him.

Someone actually asked Radek Stephanek if he's modelling now:

"The former world No8, who previously dated Wimbledon champions Martina Hingis and Petra Kvitova either side of his first marriage with Vaidisova (he married Vaidisova for the second time in 2018), said: “No, I’m not doing any modelling! I’ve got some partnership deals that I’m fulfilling but I’m definitely not modelling.

“I’m coaching Sebastian Korda and travel with him 12-15 weeks a year. I’m coaching Sebastian because his father Petr coached me for 16 years.

“We are nicely closing the circle of life. Our families are very close.

“I have my family with two young daughters which makes me very happy - family is my No1 priority. My older daughter is supporting Seb heavily.

“Away from that I have a couple of businesses that I’m involved in. It’s plenty. I’m definitely not bored.

“I’m involved in a few green projects. I have a project that is fire protection for solar panels so I’m following the trends.

“My last involvement is a project with virtual reality. This is what I’m busiest with now because it’s obviously coming whether we want it or not - it’s on its way."

by Anonymousreply 145July 12, 2023 2:28 AM

Mirra Andreeva has been fined $8,000 for unsporting behaviour. During her match she was given a point penalty for throwing her racquet twice (they are strict when it comes to potentially damaging the grass) and refused to shake the umpire's hand.

Dan Evans has been fined $4,000 for an audible obscenity.

Andy Murray has a sassy 7-year-old daughter. She calls him “Andy Murray” instead of “daddy” in front of her school friends and won't acknowledge him properly because she's embarrassed by him.

by Anonymousreply 146July 12, 2023 3:02 AM

As not attractive (I wouldn't say "ugly") as Stepanek is, I'm guessing he has massive meat which enables him to pull all these female tennis players.

Suspect in Larry Nassar stabbing said ex-doctor made lewd remark watching Wimbledon, AP source says

A prisoner suspected of stabbing Larry Nassar at a federal penitentiary in Florida said the disgraced former sports doctor provoked the attack by making a lewd comment while they were watching a Wimbledon tennis match on TV, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

McMillan, 49, told prison workers that he attacked Nassar after the sexually abusive ex-U.S. gymnastics team doctor made a comment about wanting to see girls playing in the Wimbledon women’s match, the person said.

For some reason I think Sinner is going to have his breakthrough and beat Djokovic. I really am not a fan, so I don't want him to. Flip side, I'm no Novak fan either.

by Anonymousreply 187July 13, 2023 12:46 AM

Djokovic could be down 2 sets, 0-5 and 0-40 to anyone left in the draw, and I'd still favor him to win.

ITA that Carlitos shows good sportsmanship on court, and off. But isn't it kinda easy to applaud your opponent after you've WON? Seems like that shouldn't be a stretch for anyone.

Awarding a point to your opponent against the official call, or when the call is in question -- now THAT surprises me.

Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic in middle of Wimbledon ‘Spygate’ scandal

There’s a new controversy at Wimbledon with a familiar tagline: “Spygate.”

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz admitted Wednesday that his dad likely was recording Novak Djokovic’s training at Wimbledon after a report surfaced from Serbian outlet b92 that Alcaraz’s father “closely followed the events at Djokovic’s training” and was “at one point recording everything that was happening.”

Alcaraz, the 20-year-old Spanish phenom, is on track to face Djokovic in the Wimbledon final.

Alcaraz insisted there was nothing fishy going on with his father’s filming.

“My father is a huge fan of tennis,” he said. “He doesn’t only watch my matches. I think he gets into the club at 11 a.m., gets out at 10 p.m., watching matches, watching practice from everyone, being able to watch Djokovic in real life, yeah, probably it is true he’s filmed the sessions.”

The reigning U.S. Open champion said he doesn’t think film from those practice sessions would play a role during a potential matchup with the Serbian tennis legend, who owns the men’s tennis record with 23 major titles.

“I don’t think so,” he said, smiling. “I mean, I have a lot of videos from Djokovic on every platform. I think it’s not an advantage for me.”

by Anonymousreply 198July 13, 2023 2:35 PM

The filming saga, dubbed “Spygate” by the British press, recycling the name of the infamous NFL scandal involving Bill Belichick’s Patriots, picked up steam when Djokovic, 36, asked during his press conference for more privacy.

“The circumstances are such that we don’t have privacy in training, although sometimes I would like to have more privacy,” Djokovic said. “Then it gives me more opportunities to try some things, to communicate more clearly with my team.

“The fact is that you are not completely relaxed in training. You know your rivals are there, you know everyone is looking over your shoulder at what’s going on, what you’re working on. Every shot is measured, evaluated and assessed.

“That, through some analysis, affects the eventual meeting with Alcaraz or anyone. Concentration is required. For me, training is like a match. I bring that intensity to training as well.”

In Friday’s semifinals, Alcaraz is set to face world No. 3 Daniil Medvedev, and Djokovic will play Italian No. 8 seed Jannik Sinner.

A Djokovic-Alcaraz final would be a rematch of last month’s French Open semifinal in which Djokovic prevailed over his younger opponent after Alcaraz began cramping in the third set due to the stress of the superstar showdown.

by Anonymousreply 224July 13, 2023 10:52 PM

Some quotes from Ons's press conference

"Actually, it’s funny. When I had match point, the crowd was cheering for me. I was like ‘Please, please don’t cheer. She’ll get angry and she’ll ace me.’ And she did. She got so angry that she aced me.”

“It was very difficult for me to return her serve… even the speed was difficult. I was just like honestly, I’m not gonna give a shit. I’m just gonna go in and hit my return”

Q: “We saw her coping mechanisms. She was really loud, hitting the ball really hard. But we didn’t figure out your coping mechanisms..”

JABEUR: “She was screaming for both of us, I guess.” (Reporters laugh)

On her fans: “They’re funny because a few fans are texting my mental coach giving her advice on how to coach me (laughs). I’m sure they texted Issam and Karim too”

by Anonymousreply 239July 14, 2023 6:43 AM

The Times has a writer named David Waldstein doing some of their Wimbledon coverage this year.

In one story, he made a big point about how Rybakina won the French Open last month. Yes, really. (It took fifteen hours for them to correct it.)

In the preview of the Ons-Sabalenka match, he characterized them both as “power” players.

Sorry, but Ons is a finesse player.

No wonder the Times is disbanding their sports desk.

by Anonymousreply 240July 14, 2023 8:42 AM

Il gingio and Alcaraz.

by Anonymousreply 241July 14, 2023 10:14 AM

Because of the NYT sports situation, how will Ben R get his income? Where will his new home be?

I often don't like some of his traits, primarily how he goes out of his way--WAY out of his way to create chaos. His inability to find fault with any woman's match. His insistence that the women's game is equal to and better than the men's game, always, instead of on occasion. His hatred on 3 of 5 sets (which I think is a cause he undertakes so that the men playing longer/equal prize money debate can be squashed). He has such an agenda, like many reporters do, but his are so glaring and based on emotion. When he is objective, he's informative and entertaining enough, but his bias is very off putting.

by Anonymousreply 242July 14, 2023 12:39 PM

C'mon Il Gingio!

[QUOTE] Because of the NYT sports situation, how will Ben R get his income? Where will his new home be?

R242 Ben is destined for a lifetime of riches when his new book on Naomi Osaka hits the shelves. Who doesn't want to read about Naomi finding her power AND her voice?!

by Anonymousreply 244July 14, 2023 12:59 PM

Everything about Osaka repels me. Is she really worth the huge amounts of money sponsors have thrown at her? I know she isn't now because she virtually quit tennis but even when she was playing I didn't really understand it. I wouldn't be shocked if that book doesn't do very well but I may be wrong about Osaka's popularity.

by Anonymousreply 245July 14, 2023 1:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 249July 14, 2023 2:16 PM

We’ll seeeeeeee.

by Anonymousreply 250July 14, 2023 2:17 PM

I think she will be back. The question is whether she has the mental fortitude to stick with it. One mildly contentious question at a press conference and she may slink away.

To be clear, I’m absolutely supportive of players safeguarding their mental health. She just seems so extra.

by Anonymousreply 251July 14, 2023 2:31 PM

And Novaxx wins....again. I will never understand that people can like him. He is the GOAT and he is incredible but.....he is so easy to hate.

by Anonymousreply 252July 14, 2023 3:31 PM

Try as he may Novaxx always sounds so disingenuous.

by Anonymousreply 253July 14, 2023 3:31 PM

What a whiner novak is. In addition to the hindrance call (justifiable), he acted mortally wounded by the delay warning (also deserved).

by Anonymousreply 254July 14, 2023 3:52 PM

Carlitos drank water before he started, 'atta boy keep that up.

by Anonymousreply 255July 14, 2023 3:54 PM

I used to like Osaka and still do, but I really thought that stunt she pulled by refusing to do no press at Roland Garros and appealing to care for her mental health was unethical. Especially when it came out a year later that she had still not sought any outside help for her 'mental health' issues. This only undermines the general publics view on legitimate mental health issues. I also hate both her and Sabalenka's use of the phrase, 'I don't feel safe' to discuss not speaking the press, when what they mean is 'I don't want to be challenged'.

With that said, I think is a pretty sweet, but sheltered young woman who is surrounded by some people who don't have her best interst in mind.

by Anonymousreply 256July 14, 2023 4:13 PM

Carlos with a lot of great drop shots and coming to the net. I think he's figured out how to play grass. Encouraging to see but can he beat Novaxx?

I’d like to think that Carlos will feel less pressure than he did last month.

After all, Novak is expected to walk away with this thing. The pressure is on him (though boy does he thrive on pressure generally, though remember what it did to him when he was going for the calendar slam, where he fell about at the USO).

Carlos should focus on having fun out there and who knows?

by Anonymousreply 274July 14, 2023 6:33 PM

Carlos played phenomenally well today.

by Anonymousreply 275July 14, 2023 8:19 PM

Haha, r269, I noticed him too and wondered how he could move from side to side and bend down.

by Anonymousreply 276July 14, 2023 8:23 PM

Starting to think this might be a memorable final.

I watched Alvaraz in Queens in an early round and his game was awkward. By the next match he was much improved. His game on grass has improved so much. He’s pretty ready.

by Anonymousreply 277July 14, 2023 10:34 PM

Alacarz is Med's kryptonite. Players lose, sometimes badly. Med loses. But he always competes well and even if he's losing, there's a glint of belief that he can come back. Against Alcaraz at Indian Wells and now Wimbledon, he looks resigned, lost, no glint of belief.

by Anonymousreply 282July 15, 2023 2:04 AM

Did anyone else notices Med's wife body language? Geez, we know he is losing but could you look a little bit more supportive? She looked angry, deceived, frustrated with the way her husband was playing.

by Anonymousreply 283July 15, 2023 4:06 AM

^ I don't understand, what with all Med's success, why she doesn't get that ugly mole removed.

by Anonymousreply 284July 15, 2023 11:02 AM

R283, Medvedev WAS playing like a clown. He just kept making awful choices. (That mole frustrates me too, especially since Medvedev has had some of his own moles removed.)

by Anonymousreply 285July 15, 2023 11:26 AM

She looks miserable (and trashy Russian 'new money' with recognisable bracelets from multiple luxury designers on her arm) - but I think I would be too.

by Anonymousreply 286July 15, 2023 11:34 AM

Carlos is completely capable of beating Novak. If he plays his best and can keep his head, he will. Novak does not have a lock on the title. The question is, can Carlos do this?

by Anonymousreply 287July 15, 2023 11:40 AM

Do they ever close the roof due to wind? I think the weather is the X factor. It's supposed to be cool and windy. Novak hates the wind and it will stop them both from playing their best but he should win as the more experienced player. I fear a sucky, error filled match.

Also, Carlos can't not think about cramping again no matter how prepared he is. It's easy to imagine him over hydrating and then having stomach a issue or something. On the plus side, he'll have the whole crowd pulling for him, which he totally deserves.

by Anonymousreply 291July 15, 2023 1:48 PM

Ons nervous and flat after going up a break in first set. OITNB may win. I like Ons, but she's not someone I NEED to win. I won't be crushed if she's upset here.

by Anonymousreply 292July 15, 2023 1:49 PM

^^ I NEED Ons to win this!!

by Anonymousreply 293July 15, 2023 1:50 PM

Come oñnnnnnnnnn Jabeur!!!

by Anonymousreply 294July 15, 2023 1:51 PM

Wtf happened ? Jabeur was playing so well

Marketa is playing splendid but Jabeur come-on! You took out:

Kvitova - 2 wimbledon championships Rybakina - 1 wimbledon Sablenaka - 1 Aussie Open Marketa - 0 Grand Slam

by Anonymousreply 295July 15, 2023 1:54 PM

Ons should have let Big Sable win the Semis

by Anonymousreply 296July 15, 2023 1:55 PM

I can't watch

by Anonymousreply 297July 15, 2023 2:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 303July 15, 2023 2:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 304July 15, 2023 2:45 PM

Big Sable would have won this match

by Anonymousreply 305July 15, 2023 2:46 PM

Big Sable would've probably blown it, like she did the Semi.

by Anonymousreply 306July 15, 2023 2:51 PM

It's embarrassing, the extent to which ESPN is pushing Jabeur even in her defeat.

by Anonymousreply 307July 15, 2023 2:59 PM

WORST final ever.

by Anonymousreply 308July 15, 2023 3:36 PM

"Ons need to build up the mental."

She does, but it's hard. I actually think, as with Sinner, it would be better if she has LESS people in her ear. She already has a mental coach. All the top players have massive teams; someone catering to every aspect of their training and playing. And they're dependent. Players always looking for affirmation, solace in their box. Plus, now coaching is allowed, so they're looking for answers. I don't think this is always good. Yes it's a nice resource, but players need to learn to rely on themselves, get themselves through tough situations. Ons should play a few tournaments (doesn't have to be Slams, just everyday tour tourneys) with just her hitting partner. Learn to take the reigns for herself

by Anonymousreply 309July 15, 2023 3:59 PM

Watch an old Agassi-Sampras match and compare their reactions during play to the reactions of today's young players like Alcaraz, Sinner, all the rest. Agassi and Sampras didn't fist pump and celebrate after each point they won.

Yeah, but that's okay. A dense jock isn't a bad thing; his job is to win at tennis, not blow us away with his intellectual prowess. R461 It could be like Roger's loss to Novak in 2019. He never really recovered from that.

I wouldn't bet on it it with Novak - he's so single-minded and vengeance seems to be his primary driver. But time end his body may well be the thing that lets him down - as it does, ultimately, with every champion.

Of course, at age 36 he has only a few years left at best, but he still has at least a couple more great years left.

by Anonymousreply 469July 16, 2023 8:45 PM

Unless that Novaxx magical potion taps into the fountain of youth, 24 is likely to be his final GS number. Maybe one more USO, one more AO, but I wouldn't bet against Father Time.

by Anonymousreply 471July 16, 2023 9:23 PM

Nobody other than Alcarez could have beaten Djokovic today, and it was a very tight match that lasted five hours and which could have gone Djokovic's way.

"What /When is the next WTA/ATP Tournament worth discussing?"

The big Masters tournaments leading up to the US Open in Canada and Cincinnati - they're back to back in August. The Washington DC ATP 500 for the men is pretty good, but all the stars won't be there - that's in two weeks.

Without wishing to get too OT, r488, the saddest thing is that Archie and Lily will miss out on all these wonderful opportunities that their cousins will be having - watching Wimbledon from the royal box and meeting the stars, the ball boys and girls, the Wimbledon officials, all the other sporting events they will miss.

Yes, Toronto, Cincy, DC - all hard courts. There are clay court tourneys during the summer, but in Europe. The main North American swing in advance of the US Open is all hard courts.

The Cincy Masters is a combined event. I guess the Washington DC 500 is as well. Canada Masters is not combined- the women in Montreal, men in Toronto, and then reverse the next year, and so on.

Djokovic was fairly arrogant before the match, saying that he was the favorite and that other players were "trying".

He breaks a racket, gets a time violation, plays games with a long timeout.

Glad the right player won.

What's Novaxx's record for how many times he bounces the ball before serving? I just counted 15, for example.

by Anonymousreply 512July 17, 2023 3:28 AM

It's MUCH more. He's actually reduced it from his peak.

by Anonymousreply 513July 17, 2023 3:32 AM

R512, one should do a comparison of Novaxx's bounces and Rafa's ass picks.

by Anonymousreply 514July 17, 2023 3:32 AM

Novaxx is long overdue for a merciless lampoon by an up-and-coming player, much like Djokovic did of the established players when he was new on the scene long ago. For the love of Pete (Sampras, that is), he lost 6-4 in the fifth set to a player who he's been nothing but complimentary about and continued to be after the match. Having just won his 23rd major final and hadn't lost a match at Wimbledon since 2017. Declaring that he was the favorite was an honest statement, had he said he wasn't that would have been false modesty.

by Anonymousreply 519July 17, 2023 4:43 AM

Was serena liked by other players on the WTA? I find the fanfare surrounding her retirement was lacklustre. It appeared like Billie Jean King was the only main player who made a big deal out of it

by Anonymousreply 520July 17, 2023 4:54 AM

Was serena liked by other players on the WTA?

From what I've read, generally, yes. There's a lot of love-hate among fans, but I don't think Serena was broadly disliked among players.

by Anonymousreply 521July 17, 2023 5:16 AM

I think she was only close to Venus and Wozniacki. Generally she was supposed to be friendly, if a bit aloof. I think Sharapova was the one that none of the players liked, though.

by Anonymousreply 522July 17, 2023 5:25 AM

NO!!!!

by Anonymousreply 523July 17, 2023 5:26 AM

Yeah, maybe R522 is more accurate. I said she was generally liked, but maybe it's more that she wasn't generally disliked (which can be difficult for some stars), an important difference.

What true stars were well-liked by a significant portion of their peers? That's got to be an interesting list. And I'm not talking in retrospect as careers end, people mature and face life's hurdles, etc., and reevaluate people. I mean affirmatively well-liked in their prime.

by Anonymousreply 524July 17, 2023 5:35 AM

Meh, I think when you're professional competitors it's hard to have most of your peers genuinely like you. Just the nature of the game. There are probably quite a few 'frenemies' though.

They showed IBM's AI pick and it had Carlos at 55% and Novaxx at 45%. The McEnroes and Fowler were all dumb-struck. I think it was John who questioned whether it took into account the last 10 years. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say the AI did and calculated that Novaxx's performance is slipping as the years go by. It may have looked at how many unforced errors, length of matches, and how many sets it took him to win. It seems that lately, at least, he's had to play at least 4 sets to emerge victorious.

It was really nice to see Carlos shake the hands of Fowler, and John and Patrick McEnroe. I don't think I 've ever seen a winner do that before. I cannot believe I watched 5 hours of tennis between the same 2 people! of course I watched as much Wimbledon as they would show but that was epic!!

Here's what I love about Alcaraz's victory over Novaxx.

Novaxx has this whole mystic stuff going on all the time, my body is my temple stuff, like taping magnets (Batteries) to his sternum, refusing to be vaccinated for covid, mystery bottles delivered between sets ... and who knows what else that has gone on and on over the years ... he must be extraordinarily high maintenance to deal with ...

meanwhile this teenager shows up with a great smile and a true love of the game and takes him out.

by Anonymousreply 547July 17, 2023 4:19 PM

[quote]mystery bottles delivered between sets

I'm pretty sure that those bottles are PEDs. It's clear that it's some sort of vapour inhaled that likely increases alertness and concentration. So it's funny that he pushes the 'my body is a temple' thing. I wonder what he was doing in that extended toilet break. Probably one of those bottles again.

R543 you wonder? Do you wonder about how endorsement deals work? Did you wonder when you saw that both men deliberately put on their branded watches as they waited for Kate? by Anonymousreply 577July 19, 2023 11:50 AM

On the one hand I admire Cressy for committing to a game style and trying to make it work, on the other he seems to have been exceedingly bone-headed in not makinh any adaptations in the face of a string of pretty dreadful losses.

The refusal to compromise on the second serve (effectively attempting a second first serve) cost him in so many tie-breaks this year.

Women's tennis also needs to have five sets in Grand Slams. It would make matches more compelling and give players more of a chance to find their rhythm.

"Women's tennis also needs to have five sets in Grand Slams. It would make matches more compelling and give players more of a chance to find their rhythm. "

Won't happen. It would change the entire tennis calendar since the Slams would have to be longer than two weeks. Not that it couldn't be done - but I can't see the ITF or Slams or the tours doing it. They could play best of five just in the final - like they used to at the year end championships back when it was the Virginia Slims Championships.
