As a gay traveller, I had to face the orthodoxy on my recent trip to Florida. I was so scared I never left the confines of Wilton Manors the entire time I was down there. It simply wasn't safe. Yes it was that bad.

The NAACP didn't invent such warnings. There used to be a series of guides published to help black travelers know where it was safe for them to travel, and where it wasn't. They were called "green books." (One sees them depicted in 'Lovecraft Country,' the 2020 HBO series.)
