Woody Allen’s new movie is getting positive buzz

And it’s in French

So how long before Mia and the kiddies descend upon Woody's latest effort?

[quote] Woody Allen’s new movie is getting positive buzz

Meanwhile Mia stays home and watches Murder She Wrote.

by Anonymousreply 2April 6, 2023 2:07 AM

R2 I also drive my children to suicide. I am busy as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 3April 6, 2023 2:12 AM

Love, love, love Woody. Can't wait to watch this

by Anonymousreply 4April 6, 2023 3:23 AM

He is a pedophile

by Anonymousreply 5April 6, 2023 3:27 AM

I hope it's brilliant. I'd love to see him go out on a high note.

by Anonymousreply 6April 6, 2023 3:27 AM

Fuck off, Dylan.

by Anonymousreply 7April 6, 2023 3:37 AM

MA VÉRITÉ! MA VÉRITÉ!

by Anonymousreply 8April 6, 2023 3:42 AM

Sad to think of all the brilliant films Mia's petty wounded pride cost the world. Mia and the lynch mob that is.

by Anonymousreply 9April 6, 2023 3:44 AM

I have a pudeur about discussing this.

by Anonymousreply 10April 6, 2023 4:09 AM

"Sad to think of all the brilliant films Mia's petty wounded pride cost the world."

Yeah, think of all the young women who could have been paired with an elderly Allen as their romantic partner.

OH THE HUMANITY!!!

by Anonymousreply 11April 6, 2023 4:53 AM

Mia, Ronan and Dylan are all planning their responses in French as we speak.

by Anonymousreply 12April 6, 2023 5:12 AM

I hope the film does well and MIA IS BITCH!

by Anonymousreply 13April 6, 2023 5:14 AM

Yes, because in the age of the Marvel Comic Universe, nothing sings BIG BOX OFFICE like a foreign language movie from an 87-year-old.

by Anonymousreply 14April 6, 2023 5:23 AM

A good film excuses a few kid diddles.

by Anonymousreply 15April 6, 2023 5:25 AM

Box office, schmox office -- it'll probably get slapped onto Netflix like all the other non-Marvel films.

by Anonymousreply 16April 6, 2023 5:28 AM

Here's hoping Netflix wants it, because Amazon dropped Woody several years ago.

Roger Friedman, the cluck who's swooning over this movie, sounds like a real clod. "I was on the edge of my seat worrying about certain characters."...Jesus Christ. What a pathetic dickhead.

by Anonymousreply 18April 6, 2023 5:36 AM

Darn! I lost Wood’s films. I wish I could tell him how much I do. He’s the best film maker out there. I sure don’t want to see some guy climbing up a building wearing a cap. I own them and watch them often. I look forward to each of his new movies all year. I agree with R9. I hope it gets picked up by someone.

by Anonymousreply 19April 6, 2023 5:46 AM

Oh brother, that is ‘I love Woody’s films’.

by Anonymousreply 20April 6, 2023 5:47 AM

One of our greatest filmmakers.

If he wasn’t on the spectrum, he’d probably be more appropriately outraged by what Mia and her fucked up kids have done to his reputation.

by Anonymousreply 21April 6, 2023 5:53 AM

[quote] Amazon dropped Woody several years ago.

How McCarthyistic of Amazon because of a political statement. Punishing Woody for not becoming a disciple in the now largely passed MeToo hysteria

by Anonymousreply 22April 6, 2023 5:55 AM

Amazon dropped him because he couldn't grow a mustache like that chick in their latest "what the fuck is this about' commercial.

by Anonymousreply 23April 6, 2023 6:19 AM

WHY WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE ELDERLY CHILD MOLESTER!!!!

by Anonymousreply 24April 6, 2023 9:21 AM

Just happened to see 'Broadway Danny Rose' then 'Purple Rose of Cairo' again, and marvelled at the talent and craftsmanship. Sheer pleasure, which is in contemporary short supply.

When WA is good he's really good, and the duds don't matter. He knows they're duds, and admits it in his memoir. I'm reading said book having loved the above films again, and fascinating it duly is.

by Anonymousreply 25April 6, 2023 9:31 AM

^Starring Moi!

by Anonymousreply 26April 6, 2023 9:42 AM

He won’t win any Oscar for International Film.

In the the first place, France must select the film to be France’s official submission for the category—which will never happen. Second, if it did, then it still has to go through a preliminary “short list” vote before nominees are selected—that will never happen.

by Anonymousreply 27April 6, 2023 9:48 AM

No offence, but I'm legitimately not interested in a movie from a 87-year-old affluent Jew with fifty feature films under his belt. What more could he possibly have to say? What more could his perspective possibly bring to the world that it hasn't yet? Like watching ancient splooge slowly turning into dust out in the sun.

by Anonymousreply 28April 6, 2023 10:04 AM

^Would it make a difference to you if he weren’t a Jew, as you put it?

by Anonymousreply 29April 6, 2023 12:24 PM

Yes, that part's the worst.

by Anonymousreply 30April 6, 2023 12:34 PM

R28 = racist

by Anonymousreply 31April 6, 2023 12:36 PM

R28 highlights Jews because that's what is done in Jew-hating cultures like America.

by Anonymousreply 32April 6, 2023 12:44 PM

Bullets Over Broadway is running on cable this month. I'd forgotten how hilarious it is with great performances from everyone especially Tilly and Wiest. And unknown Edie Falco plays the silent role of a production assistant. Say whatever you want about Woody but he's a genius filmmaker.

by Anonymousreply 33April 6, 2023 12:45 PM

[quote] Say whatever you want about Woody but he's a genius filmmaker.

But to scum like R28 - which includes much of the world - Allen first and foremost is not a filmaker or a genius or an award winner. He's a JEW!

by Anonymousreply 34April 6, 2023 12:49 PM

Addendum R34

He's an AFFLUENT JEW. One must be accurate about American anti-Jewish bigotry.

by Anonymousreply 35April 6, 2023 12:51 PM

Love Woody Allen's films. He's so impressively prolific with a general evergreen formula across his works. I'm excited for another return to form. It's been a decade since Blue Jasmine and even longer since VCB and Midnight in Paris. Loved Bullets Over Broadway and Manhattan Murder Mystery aka Only Murders in the Building. Hannah and her Sisters is another one of his more rewatchable movies. Mighty Aphrodite remains a miss for me mainly because Mira Sorvino was never a convincing actress. She has them all fooled though - Harvard, the Academy, etc.

In terms of white writer-director auteur filmmakers, Woody Allen, Quentin Tarantino, and Wes Anderson are the modern gold standard who maintain a recognizable, consistent, and influential filmmaking brand. The Three Amigos, Cuaron, del Toro, and Inarritu do the same for Mexico. I'm excited to see more from the Daniels now that they've fully broken through in a major way.

by Anonymousreply 36April 6, 2023 1:08 PM

I love like 10 or 12 of his movies, but since Bullets of Broadway he hasn’t done nothing very good and has done lots of awful ones. I used to be excited to go see his movies in the movie theaters, but, using r25, got fed up of the duds and haven’t even see his last 4 or 5. The exception was Blue Jasmine due to Blantchett.

Having said this, that just an artistic appreciation. His cancellation from a lot of actors who had worked with him many many years after the case had been archived and just to surf the metoo movement was shameful and spineless.

by Anonymousreply 37April 6, 2023 1:11 PM

How out of touch is this octogenarian? I have bailed on RIFKIN'S FESTIVAL (made in San Sebastian) after 5 minutes, when the Wallace Shawn character claims he was served tacos on a transatlantic flight and got diarrhea.

The French are now the last people on earth to give him any "artistic cred."

by Anonymousreply 40April 6, 2023 1:37 PM

I read Allen's memoir 'Apropos of Nothing' and he recounted how Timothee Chalamet privately confessed that he made the statement about regretting working with Allen because he thought the public renouncement would improve his chances of winning the Oscar for 'Call Me By Your Name.'

That anecdote, to me, is so representational of the nature of the entertainment industry and the people who populate it. I doubt many of the actors who condemned Allen are actually concerned with whether or not he is guilty -- their interest is primarily in maintaining their personal brand.

That said, while I love many of his 1970s - '90s films and think what has happened to him in the States is BS, I'm not eager to see his new work and think his days of making great films are over. Even the critically acclaimed 'Blue Jasmine' had major issues with plausibility and was too broadly directed, relying heavily on Cate Blanchett and Sally Hawkins to add nuance to the script and sell scenarios and relationships that make less and less sense the more you think about them.

by Anonymousreply 41April 6, 2023 1:50 PM

Fair enough but r40 we are not talking about Rifkin's Festival, which even devoted Woody Allen critics hated.

I haven't seen it yet.

by Anonymousreply 42April 6, 2023 1:51 PM

Plus Mia is batshit crazy. Her sister's living in poverty in Florida, two of her children killed themselves and one-note Ronan, who dumped his fiance, now looks like he is transitioning into an aging circuit boy....easily the most pathetic of gay men.

by Anonymousreply 43April 6, 2023 1:55 PM

Not one person anywhere has mentioned this but this will be Woody's first foreign language film since What's Up, Tiger Lily"? I hope it's at least as funny.

1. I don't believe the allegation. Unfortunately, that is a compulsion and pedophiles are recidivists. Woody Allen is almost 90 years old. MeToo happened. Dozens of women accused Cosby and Weinstein. With Dennis Hastert and any priest who is exposed, it was invariably several boys. There has never been a second case with Allen, so I don't really believe it.

2. That said, no movie he has created since Crimes and Misdemeanors is at all memorable or will last. He had a good twenty year run before that though. A few are all right, but no more than that.

by Anonymousreply 55April 6, 2023 2:32 PM

Woody lost his mojo years ago and BTW why tf is he making a film in French? It does amuse.

by Anonymousreply 56April 6, 2023 2:32 PM

He still has more of a fan base in Europe where #MeToo never went as far. A lot of young American actors don't want to work with him, so he has to resort to this. I think he understands French, although I have never seen him interviewed in it.

In the middle of a huge breakup/scandal he decides to assault his young daughter. No scandal before or after. Investigations at the time cleared Woody. No one else ever coming out to accuse him. Meanwhile Mia's adopted children have multiple issues with estrangement and suicide. So what is the truth?

by Anonymousreply 59April 6, 2023 3:06 PM

Mia's recent birthday tribute to Michael Caine was truly bizarre, as if the prospect of a quasi-incestuous relationship is still appealing or funny to her: "Back in the day , when I was married to her dad, Nancy Sinatra dated him. If they had married he'd have been my son in law. He once played my husband. Just such a lovely man." And then of course a smiley face about "forgiving" him for introducing her to Woody.

According to 'Apropos Of Nothing', Mia made Ronan have leg-lengthening surgery, 'because for a career in politics you need to be tall.'

I happened to see Ronan being super-articulate on the BBC during Trump's arraignment, so maybe he was bright enough to finesse the worst of Supermom. He was seated, so no sight of his legs.

He obviously got the surgery R61. What other healthy young person (no diabetes, weakened immune system, etc.) mysteriously contracts a "bone infection" not in one but both legs at the same time? Without an infection already present in soft tissue? This allegedly happened during one of his two trips with Mia to Sudan (great place to bring your teenage son), where he suffered no grievous injury that would have exposed his bones to bacteria. And then, according to his story, the infection was left "untreated" for quite sometime. If that's all true then his case should be published in JAMA or the Lancet because I don't recall reading about any epidemic of bone infections in Sudan, but I guess most white people still equate Africa with pestilence and disease.

Just re-watched Manhattan: it's a gorgeous film but the affair with the 17-year-old is repulsive.

by Anonymousreply 64April 6, 2023 3:31 PM

No gays in Woody's films.

by Anonymousreply 65April 6, 2023 3:33 PM

Why would there be? Why would he write about a world he knows nothing about?

by Anonymousreply 66April 6, 2023 3:35 PM

There are no gays or blacks in Woody's world or NYC. And Meryl Streep's lesbian character in Manhattan is a caricature.

by Anonymousreply 67April 6, 2023 3:36 PM

Why would Woody be involved with cultural appropriation? Is he black and gay?

by Anonymousreply 68April 6, 2023 3:37 PM

Woody is a gay black and you know it!

by Anonymousreply 69April 6, 2023 3:38 PM

Are black directors ever called out for not having whites in their films?

by Anonymousreply 70April 6, 2023 3:40 PM

I demand Woody make a film with every white actor in blackface with a lisp!

by Anonymousreply 71April 6, 2023 3:40 PM

The point: NYC is full of all kinds of people, but Woody only does Jewish stereotypes and Wasps. He's such a wanna be self-hating Jew.

by Anonymousreply 72April 6, 2023 3:45 PM

I really enjoyed Midnight In Paris which came out in 2011.

by Anonymousreply 82April 6, 2023 4:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 83April 6, 2023 4:10 PM

He doesn’t have blacks or gays because he only writes about what he knows

by Anonymousreply 84April 6, 2023 4:18 PM

Kudos to Woody for not succumbing to stupid woke directive to push black best friend and lesbian daughter out of the context in every movie, even if it is about Napoleon. I think him and Scorsese are the last ones who have the guts.

I really hope that he is not a pedo, because i can not stop loving him, he is my favorite filmmaker.

Btw. funny how all of you noticed antisemitism in that post, but have not noticed rampant ageism.

by Anonymousreply 85April 6, 2023 4:25 PM

I don’t understand the demand for directors and writers to automatically write in minority characters to please some arbitrary quota. By and large, personal friend groups have been segregated by race even in “diverse” cities.

Also the case against Woody has been total bullshit from day one. Fucking 17 year olds (considered legal adults everywhere in the world except about half the United States…) does not a child molester make. Christ.

by Anonymousreply 86April 6, 2023 4:28 PM

Most of Woody's films don't hold up and for 2 decades now he's made films that no one wanted to see or most people never heard of: Wonder Wheel, A Rainy Day in New York, Cafe Society, Magic in the Moonlight, Midnight in Paris, To Rome with Love, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, Cassandra's Dream, Whatever Works, Scoop, Match Point, Hollywood Ending, Anything Else.

How does he get financing?

by Anonymousreply 87April 6, 2023 4:36 PM

Agree R86. The fact that every movie has to have a black character nowadays is so tiresome and stupid. Films are works of art (or at least they should be) not political pamphlets.

I liked the fact that film Moonlight had no white character cause it seemed so real. I also liked the fact that Call me by your name was all white (though I did not like the pederast context), because putting blacks in some Italian provincial town in eraly 80s would have been idiotic. But I see that Guadagnino has learned a lesson so he has black female lead in every new film.

I even respect Woody for not forcing gay characters in the films if it is not his scene (though he has estranged gay son).

by Anonymousreply 88April 6, 2023 4:38 PM

Lately I have been watching Deconstructing Harry since it got made available on Amazon Prime Video. Bought it. I just love when Sunny Chae playing the prostitute, Lily Chang comes to the door and says, 'You must be Mendel Birnbaum". She strikes me as if she's laughing at the portrayal herself and is great in it. She has a throwback 1930s look of a dangerous femme fatale oriental hooker.

by Anonymousreply 91April 6, 2023 6:41 PM

One thing is forcing gay characters as token , another is to film NY society and art world, parties, Manhattan neighborhoods, academia, movie sets, fashion, song, theater, large families, all supposedly liberal and eclectic, without a gay character making an appearance. I think it is a little bit telling, though frankly it does not prevent me from enjoying his (80s and 90s) movies. It is an observation about a rather conspicuous absence.

by Anonymousreply 97April 6, 2023 7:31 PM

Oh, honey, at R5, here's your pedophile-- not Woody, but Mia's brother. Hiding in plain sight the whole time.

R38, apparently this author has written books about other classic film legends. I wonder whether she'll get into issues with Mia's brother in this book about her father and growing up in that family. No wonder Mia jumped into marriage with Sinatra.

R98 Mia is like those women who are incest survivors and always screeching about pedos and strangers, then leave their kids with the father who molested her. That scenario is pretty common. Delusions and projection are strong among Daddy’s Little Diddlers. Usually toss in a little homophobia into recipe too.

by Anonymousreply 99April 6, 2023 7:44 PM

[quote]I don’t understand the demand for directors and writers to automatically write in minority characters to please some arbitrary quota.

Yes, they're arbitrary quotas. But he's on his 50TH FILM. He writes the scripts (or at least, he tells someone else what to write), and he lives in New York City. In all those 50 films it's never once occurred to him to think or write about the lives of people other than white straight Manhattanites?

Meanwhile, he's making a movie in France because he knows the French worship filmmakers and will treat him like a god, regardless of how creatively bankrupt he might be.

by Anonymousreply 100April 6, 2023 7:45 PM

R101 you're mistaking "canceled" for "imprisoned." Hachette "canceled" Allen's book deal and Amazon "canceled" his production deal. He's found other companies and sources of financing, but he's been unceremoniously shut out of the American culture industry.

So if it's not an all American girl and a sex allegation, the pain and despair other types of abuse causes doesn't really matter? Or maybe because Farrow is blonde and blue eyed, she's incapable of any wrong? Hypocrites. So many of the people who screech all day about racism are bizarrely worshipful and unquestioning of any marginally attractive Anglo woman. Its actually quite interesting.

In regard to "young American actors" - who is he missing out on hiring - Jonah Hill? Skylar Astin? Ansel Elgort? Zendaya? Mollie Bobbie Brown? Or maybe Brits like Florence Pugh? etc.

Hey R90, aka Ronan, calm down. Nothing I said was inaccurate however I did forget to mention Mia's convicted child molester brother. The book about the Farrow family history is going to be fascinating.

One quick clarification: I absolutely did not mean to call Ronan "the most pathetic of gay men" He is incredibly intelligent and a deserving Pulitzer Prize winner. I meant that as a description of the aging circuit boy contingent, not Ronan specifically. In fact, I think all of that time he is spending at the gym has been time spent, he looks like he is in the best physical shape of his life.

Oh, there are plenty of people who are revolted by Woody Allen. And if you want to talk crazy, well the Woody lovers who scream that Mia Farrow is crazy/evil, that she drove her children to suicide, that her brother is a pedophile (somehow that's supposed to be her fault), that Ronan is "transitioning" seem like the ones in need of some good anti-psychotic meds. Crazy assholes, those Woody lovers.

by Anonymousreply 126April 7, 2023 12:12 AM

Nope, it's you.

by Anonymousreply 127April 7, 2023 12:14 AM

R86 Midnight in Paris (2011) is literally his highest grossing film to date at $154M. Blue Jasmine (2013) isn't far behind at $99M followed by Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) at $96M. All three also won Oscars. Match Point (2005) made $85M.

Woody has always had his fair share of flops to balance out his Oscar winning hits. He's so prolific and so dialed in to what works that it's really just a numbers game. Every decade he produces a small handful of critically and commercially successful films worth seeing. Coupe de Chance (2023) aka Stroke of Luck is shaping up to be yet another comeback film in a career full of them.

Every decade, Mia comes out of the woodwork to try and thwart Woody's success by dredging up a case that has already been long decided in the court of law. He's also been happily married for many years now without incident. Meanwhile, Mia has worked inconsistently, had no stable relationships of note since Allen, won no major awards throughout her career, let alone received any significant nominations since the 80s. People know she's batshit crazy and generally avoid her at all costs. Dylan is an idiot and Satchel is an opportunistic snake born of another man. They are complicit in their mother's craziness. Mia couldn't handle that Woody never married her and instead moved on and married another woman who wasn't white. She will never stop tying to destroy him until she dies. If we're lucky, her bitterness will get her first and Allen will have the last laugh.

by Anonymousreply 132April 7, 2023 12:29 AM

Woody is...was...a great artist. But there is undeniable proof that he's more than just a creep. I mean, please, Mia finding salacious nude polaroids taken by Woody of her adopted daughter is, ahem...not good. One of many, MANY disturbing facts. And the constant theme of older men with MUCH younger women in almost every single one of his films does not exactly create confidence.

by Anonymousreply 133April 7, 2023 12:30 AM

I loved Match Point. It was very different from the typical WA film. The second half of the film has you on the edge of your seat…anxious over the villain getting exposed!

R134 the casting was pitch perfect. Jonathan Rhys Meyers was spot on as a venal, social climbing pretty boy coasting mainly on looks and superficial charm. Johanssen as the failed actress, Mortimer as the chirpy housewife...all excellent.

His movie with DL's beloved Timmy was lucky to be boycotted.

by Anonymousreply 138April 7, 2023 1:06 AM

I don't know whether or not I believe the Dylan thing.

What I do know is that what he DID do (groom, seduce, and carry on a sexual affair with the teenage daughter of his long term partner, destroying a family in the process for his own gratification) was monstrous.

None of you defending him would tolerate this if it happened in your own family.

He's a foul, disgusting human being, whether or not he diddled his actual daughter.

by Anonymousreply 139April 7, 2023 1:11 AM

Midnight in Paris is a fucking awful film. Crimes and Misdemeanors is a masterpiece though.

As stated above it's hit and miss with WA. Let's see what he does this time.

by Anonymousreply 142April 7, 2023 1:23 AM

R139 I hear you, but I also think that's the real problem people have. I think deep down most people know Woody Allen didn't molest Dylan. Mia, Dylan, and Ronan can pop up every few years and insist to the contrary, but none of them are the picture of mental health, to say nothing of the fact that the claims were dubious in nature to begin with.

As adults you have to know when to live and let live and mind your business. Not saying that to be sassy, but Woody has been with Soon-Yi over 25 years. That's longer than he was with Mia or any other woman he's been linked to. It's not like he was grooming her to be a willing sex slave or escort. They...love each other. And Woody and Soon-Yi's life has been more drama dry than Mia, Dylan, or Ronan's despite its problematic origins.

by Anonymousreply 143April 7, 2023 1:41 AM

I think men hitting up on younger women is disgusting,

by Anonymousreply 144April 7, 2023 1:43 AM

"Most people" don't know any such thing. They weren't there. And your claim that Mia Farrow, Ronan Farrow and Dylan Farrow are mentally ill is laughable. If anyone is "not the picture of mental health" it's Woody Allen." The things he's done are a strong indication that he's VERY disturbed. As for the "dubious" claims...well, what "dubious" about them? Allen seems entirely capable of molesting the child he had such a strange fixation on. He's a sick creep. Always was, but it wasn't until he started fucking Soon-Yi that it all came to light how twisted he is.

Connecticut state’s attorney Frank S. Maco announced that while he found “probable cause” to prosecute Allen, he was dropping the case because Dylan was too “fragile” to deal with a trial. Mia Farrow agreed with the decision, he said.

Maco told People that Dylan was “traumatized to the extent that I did not have a confident witness to testify in any court setting, whether that’s a closed courtroom or an open courtroom.”

[quote] June 1993: In a scathing judgment against Allen, a Manhattan judge ruled that Mia Farrow should receive custody of the children, and that he was not convinced “that the evidence proves conclusively that there was no sexual abuse.” The judge also said psychotherapists who interviewed Dylan Farrow had their judgement “colored by their loyalty to Mr. Allen,” according to the Times.

Woody speaks French. I just re-watched the doc Wild Man Blues which covered his jazz band's tour of Europe. The French love him and the Italians adore him so I think his film will do very well in Europe.

As for those complaining he doesn't include gay characters in his films, it's probably an intentional blessing on his part. His art world characters and intellectual characters are written as pompous know-it-alls. He has stated he does not like intellectual show-off types and this clip is typical of his feelings...

Good lord he's 87. Must be a workaholic.

by Anonymousreply 167April 7, 2023 5:01 AM

R138 I agree. Nothing after Blue Jasmine has been worth watching. Coup de Chance reviews seem to suggest it breaks the decade long dry spell, so that's good. WA either makes an amazing film that makes money, gets super high critical ratings, and Oscar noms/wins or is a completely skippable piece of filler about a rich couple's romance that flops at the box office. He doesn't really have a middle ground except for his films with ScarJo. Those were more commercial hits than critical darlings. VCB won because of Penelope Cruz. I think Cate needs to work with WA or QT to get the third Oscar. Todd Field is not going to cut it.

by Anonymousreply 168April 7, 2023 5:02 AM

Actually, Woody Allen's single worst scene was the Ed Begley, Jr gay bar scene in the disappointing WHATEVER WORKS.

by Anonymousreply 169April 7, 2023 5:03 AM

Emmanuelle Beart does indeed speak fluent English, Why you feel the need to debate this fact is beyond me.

Re Chalamet, funny how really, really good he was in Cmbyn, but nothing in particular in his later films. by Anonymousreply 184April 7, 2023 11:23 AM

Just a reminder that Woody's obsession with Dylan was noted and being dealt with through therapists BEFORE he started sleeping with Soon-Yi.

That's why it's impossible for this to have been a situation where Mia made up the accusations after she found out about Soon-Yi. The Dylan thing happened FIRST. They were all going to therapy about it. During that time, Woody started sleeping with Soon-Yi. It was after that when Dylan made comments that made her pediatrician believe Woody had touched Dylan inappropriately.

by Anonymousreply 185April 7, 2023 11:25 AM

I don't know what to think, but in the HBO documentary it was said that even Carly Simon who was Mia and Woody's close friends noticed that Woody was not behaving normally with Dylan and suggested Mia that they should go to therapy.

by Anonymousreply 186April 7, 2023 12:59 PM

R139 if Soon-Yi was the victim, why did Mia beat her with a telephone receiver when she discovered the affair until a housekeeper intervened to stop the assault, as she testified in court? Why did Mia throw Soon-Yi out of the house because she "couldn't be around her" and then spread lies in the press that Soon-Yi was younger than she actually was and that she had a low IQ/was developmentally disabled? Why did André Previn supply a quote to Vanity Fair saying his daughter was "dead" to him and "no longer exists"? It seems like Mia and André weren't fit to adopt children if that was their attitude. Mia's reaction was that of a jealous lover, not a caring mother.

Soon-Yi was 20 years old when she started carrying on with Woody; he did not "groom" or "seduce" her. As Mia's nanny made clear in her tell-all, the Previn kids hated Woody and never spent much time with him. He rarely came to Mia's place until after Dylan was adopted. And who is Mia to judge anybody when it comes to sex and relationships? How old was she when she married Sinatra? Or when she stole André Previn away from her best friend Dory? When Mia first met Woody he was hooking up with a 20 year old and Mia willingly had threesomes with them.

Mia could only adopt Soon-Yi after she got her friends, Rose and Bill Styron (author of Sophie's Choice) to help overturn federal law that barred more than two foreign adoptions for US parents, a law that was very likely put in place to prevent situations like what happened with Soon-Yi. Mia also had to petition a judge to allow Woody to adopt Dylan and Moses and Satchel, even though they weren't married and didn't live together. Gee, what could go wrong with a family structure like that? Maybe if Mia had been a better parent she would have realized that she could not take care of a dozen kids at once.

by Anonymousreply 187April 7, 2023 1:08 PM

Woody didn't adopt Satchel, he was his biological father and acknowledged as such by both Mia and Woody since he was born and was put in his birth certificate. You can not adopt your bio child.

Having seen Rainy Day, I’m sure it was Chalamet’s family connections that got him the job. He’s lucky the film wasn’t widely seen and distributed. In regards to the donation of his salary, he only did it after his team told him to. They probably told him it would look good and increase his Oscar odds. He is an overrated pig and a spineless, soulless opportunist.

by Anonymousreply 192April 7, 2023 7:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 193April 7, 2023 9:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 194April 7, 2023 9:28 PM

R192 why is Chalamet given such a pass on the nepo baby accusations I wonder. The media pushed this shark eyed little boy relentlessly.

by Anonymousreply 195April 7, 2023 9:50 PM

R116 Great point and I totally agree. I also think it's an easier story to tell when it's an abusive father, notionally speaking, than an abusive mother. The idea that Bad Mothers are very few and far in between is the assumption that guides much of family law court to this day.

by Anonymousreply 196April 7, 2023 10:22 PM

R195: I think he’s not considered a nepo baby because he doesn’t come from an acting family per se like Jane Fonda, Michael Douglas, Jamie Lee, etc. Still he had an aunt and uncle in the business and any connection big or small always helps. I know what you mean though. It is strange that someone unremarkable like him exploded very quickly without hard work or a grind.

by Anonymousreply 197April 7, 2023 11:43 PM

The Farrow/Allen debacle always irritates me because people tend to defend him or her with absolutes and without conceding neither is perfect.

There are degrees of awfulness. Betraying your partner/wife with her young adoptive daughter is despicable and Mia had every right to be upset.

Molesting your very young child is pedophilia, a crime and a different level of Awful. It is one of those accusations that are so terrible that it shouldn’t be used against someone unless there is a very strong case, formal indictment or judgement. In my opinion Allen is innocent of this but I can’t say this with 100% sureness. He was mot accused andthat should ve been enough.

Mia is wrong in fabricating lies, but i gran her that it must have been traumatic being betrayed that way. Still, it does not excuse her.

Both are good artists and awful people.

by Anonymousreply 204April 8, 2023 3:10 AM

In 1994 when OJ decapitated his children’s mother and butchered Ronald Goldman with 20 stab wounds there were only 6 billion people. Today they’re are 8, 2 billion who can’t believe OJ would ever do something so heinous.

by Anonymousreply 205April 8, 2023 4:08 AM

They "look happy?" HAHAHAHAHA!

by Anonymousreply 206April 8, 2023 5:37 AM

I knew exactly what this thread was going to look like without even looking.

Never change datalounge!

by Anonymousreply 207April 8, 2023 5:48 AM

It’s not just the accusations it’s the stuff we know is true.

The guy is a freak and gets a little kick with being so open about and trotting her around uptown since the very beginning.

But who are we to deny true love.

by Anonymousreply 208April 8, 2023 5:52 AM

Why does the move have two names?

Can’t stand his stupid movies or his whole “artiste” schtick. He is also a bandwagon magnet and a lot of pretentious people claim to love his work.

by Anonymousreply 209April 8, 2023 6:02 AM

Qu'en est-il de la vérité de Dylan?

by Anonymousreply 210April 8, 2023 7:37 AM

R201 you think anger is an excuse for physical violence, especially directed at your own child? Were you raised Catholic, too? Nobody denies Mia’s right to feel betrayed and devastated, but she reacted all wrong.

Mia’s whole shtick is that Woody was the monster and that he targeted Soon-Yi. So if Soon-Yi is the innocent party or the victim, why would Mia attack her? Shouldn’t she have attacked Woody? Instead she stayed together with Woody, even asking her therapist whether she should marry him, and kicked Soon-Yi out of the house. Where was Soon-Yi supposed to go? Who could she turn to? Andre Previn? Mia’s sisters or mother? Hah!

Mia only cooked up the molestation allegation that summer when she discovered that Woody and Soon-Yi were still in contact after finding the beaver photos in January m. Ironically it was this allegation and the resulting media firestorm that ensured Woody and Soon-Yi would stay together.

by Anonymousreply 211April 8, 2023 5:36 PM

Hah! Double Hah!!

by Anonymousreply 212April 8, 2023 6:04 PM

[quote] you think anger is an excuse for physical violence, especially directed at your own child?

No. But I certainly can understand her anger.

[quote] So if Soon-Yi is the innocent party or the victim, why would Mia attack her?

Because they were having a heated argument. Soon-Yi told her "the person who's sleeping with the person is the one having the relationship", or words to that effect. No wonder Mia blew her stack. I think if she HAD had an opportunity to beat the shit out of Woody she would have.

[quote] Mia only cooked up the molestation allegation that summer when she discovered that Woody and Soon-Yi were still in contact after finding the beaver photos in January

She didn't "cook up" anything. She WISED up. Allen's involvement with Soon-Yi opened her eyes and she finally saw what he really was. A sexual predator.

by Anonymousreply 213April 8, 2023 10:34 PM

The way Mia and Andre previn turned viciously on Sun yi is telling. Who the fuck says that their own child no longer exists to them? They were never real parents to this woman. Not surprised sun yi went looking for some warmth. It's quite interesting that she fared fairly well compared to the others ( succumbing to suicide, aids, bad Ken doll plastic surgery, etc).

by Anonymousreply 214April 9, 2023 12:19 AM

[quote] Not surprised sun yi went looking for some warmth. It's quite interesting that she fared fairly well compared to the others

She's married to Woody Allen, and presumably, has sex with him. Some would say that's a fate worse than death.

by Anonymousreply 215April 9, 2023 12:49 AM

You're delusional, R139. A serious harpy. Soon Yi was in college. They've been married for over 20 years and have 2 kids. People like you diminish real sexual abuse or grooming victims with this nonsense. You are diminishing this woman's marriage as well because of your own self righteous nonsense.. Go take a cold shower and wake up.

by Anonymousreply 216April 9, 2023 1:35 AM

So I take it, R198, that you are on board with Mia beating the shit out of Soon Yi.

by Anonymousreply 217April 9, 2023 1:49 AM

[quote] So I take it, [R198], that you are on board with Mia beating the shit out of Soon Yi.

She wouldn't be the first parent who has lashed out in anger and later regretted it. And I really don't think she "beat the shit out of Soon Yi." I think that's quite an exaggeration. It wasn't like she was hospitalized for any severe injuries.

by Anonymousreply 218April 9, 2023 2:44 AM

Why didn't you bitches mention that Niels Schneider is in it? I'll watch it for him, and because it's in French.

(Though I don't have high hopes of the 86-year-old Woody producing anything great anymore.)

I can eve understand Mia's rage and feeling betrayed by her daughter, but why the hell would Andre Previn turn against his daughter for taking his ex wife new partner. Whst's it to him. I wonder if he would do the same if it was his bio child, I suppose not. He probably didn't care very much about the children that Mia adopted while they were married and who were legally adopted by him too.

If every one of my aging fans on this thread promises to see my new movie in a theatre....

It will gross hundreds of dollars.

by Anonymousreply 222April 9, 2023 4:59 PM

R219, Niels isn't looking too hot these days. But then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder. (I think Virginie took his best years. Good for her.)

by Anonymousreply 223April 9, 2023 9:26 PM

I'll bet it's talky!

by Anonymousreply 224April 10, 2023 4:20 AM

R223, I have a thing for tall men with wide-set eyes and strong noses. We'll see how he ages. His disproportionately small chin might be his old-age downfall.

by Anonymousreply 225April 10, 2023 5:22 AM

R225, then he'll probably age to your liking. I think because he started out so young he was seen as a baby face. Now he looks a bit haggard, to me anyway.

by Anonymousreply 226April 10, 2023 6:08 PM

Woody Allen is an artist. He loves to make movies, write his stories. It's not about the money for him. If you don't like his movies don't watch them. Crabbing about them all the time is a waste of time.

by Anonymousreply 227April 12, 2023 4:08 AM

[Quote]Crabbing about them all the time is a waste of time.

So is watching Another Woman, Interiors, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Radio Days, Manhattan, September, Mighty Aphrodite, A Rainy Day in New York, Everyone Says I Love You . . .👎👎👎

Sleeper, Take the Money and Run, Zelig, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Broadway Danny Rose 👍👍👍

by Anonymousreply 228April 12, 2023 5:13 AM

R228 Like I said, you don't have to watch them. It's like you want everyone to have your opinion, agree with you. It kills you they don't. Guess what? People have different opinions.

by Anonymousreply 229April 12, 2023 7:41 PM

and just offering my opinion R229 which ironically seems to bother you.

R230 Not at all.

Could have fooled me R231 Feels like a lecture and a characterization of someone who don't see Allen as a major film artist.

by Anonymousreply 232April 12, 2023 9:52 PM

(^.^) doesn't

by Anonymousreply 233April 12, 2023 10:08 PM

I agree with most of R228's categorizations. But ZELIG strikes me as an utterly forgotten (and ultimately forgettable) Allen film. It was well received initially, but nowadays, the technology (sticking Woody into period film clips and still photos) looks incredibly hokey and primitive. And that gimmick is pretty much all ZELIG has going for it.

by Anonymousreply 234April 13, 2023 2:46 AM

R232 Well then I guess you were fooled.

by Anonymousreply 235April 13, 2023 3:17 AM

R234 On of my favorite reviews of Interiors which encapsulates when Woody's filmmaking took a turn for the worse.

Variety Watching this picture a question keeps recurring: what would Woody Allen think of all this? Then you remember he wrote and directed it. The film is populated by characters reacting to situations Allen has satirized so brilliantly in other pictures.

by Anonymousreply 236April 13, 2023 3:55 AM

I remember an odd but entertaining DL obsession with INTERIORS, probably back a decade ago, eg, "Let's be Woody Allen's INTERIORS!" (I'll see if I can find one of those threads.)

For a movie so widely disdained, it seemed like a guilty pleasure for a lot of DLers. Perhaps we identified with the crazy Geraldine Page character.

by Anonymousreply 237April 13, 2023 4:06 AM

I believe there was a thread on Allen's dreary September as well. A film indebted to Bergman's Autumn Sonata and the Lana Turner-Johnny Stompanato scandal.

by Anonymousreply 238April 13, 2023 4:18 AM

Mocking DL's "Interiors" obsession is the hallmark of a vulgarian.

by Anonymousreply 240April 13, 2023 4:30 AM

Speaking of INTERIORS' Joey... poor Mary Beth Hurt (a marvelous actress who should have had a bigger film career) has advanced Alzheimer's and is residing in an assisted living facility near Hudson Yards. NEW YORK mag just ran an interview with her husband, Paul Schrader. (He mentioned that MB's old friend, Glenn Close stops off to visit her, which I thought was sweet.)

Sad.

by Anonymousreply 241April 13, 2023 4:34 AM

I didn't know that about Mary Beth. Sounds like she was diagnosed several years ago in her mid-60s. Sad end to a fine career on stage and screen. She and Close were both excellent in "The World According to Garp."

by Anonymousreply 242April 13, 2023 4:44 AM

Too bad. Did you know that growing up in Marshalltown, Iowa, Hurt had Jean Seberg as a baby sitter? The Sebergs lived next door to her. Hurt appeared in Mark Rappaport's From the Journals of Jean Seberg

Mia Farrow surprised her fans when she launched an apparent 'attack' on the Sussexes last week.

The Rosemary's Baby star, 78, wrote: 'Here's my unkind thought of the day: "I'm getting a little bit tired of Harry and Meghan."

Mia Farrow has deleted the tweet

Many others accused the actress of being hypocritical, suggesting that her “family dirty laundry [that] we've been subjected to for decades”.

Another social media user wrote: “Imagine having this many skeletons in one's closet but having the nerve to say you are tired of a man and woman you do not know and have not been seen or heard from in months.”
