where the FUCK did Watanuki come from? He's so fun! No way does he stay so lowly ranked if he keeps playing like this. I want to see him take on Djokovic
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 26, 2023 3:08 AM |
Norrie does best on slow courts and when he's playing against injured players.

Badosa chokes against Rybakina. She should have won in 2 sets

My favorite Norrie matches are the walkovers.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 26, 2023 3:12 AM |
Norrie's coming back from injury. At full flight he can beat anyone. Such a shame injuries seem to plague him.

"where the FUCK did Watanuki come from? He's so fun! No way does he stay so lowly ranked if he keeps playing like this. I want to see him take on Djokovic."
Pro tennis players are GOOD - even the ones ranked 100-200 . Numerous other players who never made much of a dent on tour nevertheless had their moments where everyone asked the exact same thing - why aren't they ranked higher? Easy - they don't do it consistently enough. He's played great, but it takes more than a couple good matches to be a to player. Miami could be one-off performance, or maybe it's his beginning of doing this more consistently.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 26, 2023 4:10 AM |
Tiafoe actually keeps mentally tough for a change and withstands a very difficult challenge by Watanuki. Good match
I hope to see more of Watanuki . Not sure he'll do much on clay but he could be dangerous on grass

R16....you're correct... Pretty much any guy in the top 1000 can really play, it's just consistency day in and day out that is the determining factor.
That is why it always Cracks me up when I read online ignorant people say that Serena could have been some of the lower ranked players! OH PLEASE! Serena would lost to the top 16 and 18 under junior players as well as top and mid level college players all who have no ranking at all!...
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 26, 2023 1:25 PM |
R25 Venus and Serena played a couple of lower-ranked players after their father claimed they could beat any man and were utterly humiliated. I think the players were in the two hundreds but can't remember exactly.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 26, 2023 1:31 PM |
R26... His name was Karsten Braasch, who was ranked 203 at the time, he played both of them, comically stated afterwards he was smoking and drinking during the match, and he beat venus 6-2 and serena 6-1 in the sets the played.
today, serena, venus, and any top female player would not get a game off the 203 ranked player today if the man took it completely serious.

Tommy Paul is so beautiful even these straight players want to get close to him, hug him, touch him. He can sense it and it makes him uncomfortable. Unlike Dimitrov in his prime--he'd hug and touch and even kiss both cheeks. Europe vs USA perhaps.

Why are all the male commentators so comically flamboyant, foppish, outrageous one way or another with their comments and what not? Hell, Haber and Courier live to make comments on the male players looks and body, creating new oh oh so funny phrases between them and so on!..
last night, during the Tiafoe match against the Japanese player, the male announcer, not sure who it was said something like "these two are creating magic, they are artists, right up there with the Sistine Chapel!".... WTF..

I don't understand how Prakrash Amritraj became a thing in Tennis. I guess having a blip of a career and being the cousin-in-law of Allison Riske qualifies you to be one of the main commentators now?

Former DL fave Pouille (Poohey) gave an interview today to the newspaper l'Equipe, which is behind a paywall and that I haven't been able to read it, but from the comments under the interview you can gather that he first struggled with injuries then clinical depression when the injuries became repetitive, a depression he then went on to self-medicate with booze. It looks like he's back on the straight and narrow but four years have passed without him having any impact on tour. Kudos to him for coming out and talking about his mental struggles.
And the reason why I would mention it is because my gut feeling is that Thiem seems to be stuck in the same negative feedback loop: I think he is depressed even though he's probably not self-medicating yet with alcohol, but even that you couldn't hold against him after he spent almost a year of his life sharing everything with MLadonna (who herself has sunk to some 150-ish ranking and struggles micro-managing and Karening day in day out in nine different languages on the challenger tour).
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 26, 2023 9:15 PM |

Lots of ATP and WTA players have always loved playing in Miami. I've liked visiting Miami, though I've seen the terrible parts. I can forget that for visitors who are in a bubble, it's a dynamic international city, and can be a lot of fun. Though you could probably say this about a lot of cities.

given how well American men are doing lately, it makes one wonder what the first quarter of this season would have been like had Korda, Opelka and Brooksby not all been injured
I mean Fritz, Tiafoe and Paul are leading the way while McDonald has come on very strong this year. Mmoh was having his best season ever until his own injury..
Now Eubanks is on the verge of cracking the top 100 (he needs to win his next match to do so)

It suddenly occurred to me that Gaydrien is playing like Miloslav Mecir a.k.a. el gattino: he doesn't seem to hit his strokes like the other players on the tour as much as he flings his arms around, in an extended position, like a cat tries to fling a flying toy away from him. So now I know why I like the way he plays. But seriously he hits 90% of his shot at a slower pace than a lot of the WTA players and the 10 remaining percents he feeds off the tremendous pace generated by the player across the net.

I haven't heard a tennis player yell so loudly in pain since Mary Pierce had her career-ending fall
The weird thing is Andreescuu fell after the injury because the pain was so intense she couldn't stand. It was not the fall that caused her injury
it's a shame as she was playing better at this tournament. She's a decent mover but I think her problem is she's heavy on her feet. I'm not talking weight but just she's not a smooth, graceful mover. She throws herself into it and doesn't have the best balance. In her match against Raducanu or Sakkari, I forget which, she fell into a split which is what Kuznetsova and Jankovic used to do

Alcaraz vs. Paul should be a fun match
Pegula vs. Potapova I don't find Potapova that impressive but she's been grinding out a lot of wins this year
Medvedev vs. Halys
Rublev vs. Sinner I remember Medvedev saying Rublev hates that people confuse him with Sinner since they have red longish hair and play bam bam tennis lol

This is a real thing. Same sized people can move drastically different and "light on the feet" is a reality. Some people don't grind into ground as much; don't put their weight down on the surface as much.

They needed to cut the courtside microphones way before they did. I feel traumatized after hearing Bianca's screaming. I honestly had some tears in my eyes. The camera lingered on her, too.
Sabalenka is murdering her opponents. I thought Barbora would put up more of a fight but she folded like a cheap card table like the rest. Who's left that can challenge her? Rybakina looks like she needs a week to recharge.

I haven't heard that much about him, but my GAWD he's thin. How does he summon the energy to play 3 set matches?!
by Anonymous | reply 125 | March 28, 2023 10:01 PM |
I don't know why I'm so familiar with Eubanks since he's mainly played challengers more so than main tour events and literally just made the Top 100 for the first time this week (his "live" ranking is top 100 after his win in the previous round; not officially until next Monday). But I remember him from college tennis and I always check scores at flashscore.com - which always has the scores for every pro tennis event of the day - whether main tour and main draw, qualifying, Challengers, or Futures. So I guess I've just seen his name a lot and recognized it over the years.

Rybakina needed that kind of win going into the semis. She seemed kinda down after some of her previous matches.

Pegula , you in danger girl
by Anonymous | reply 138 | March 29, 2023 3:22 AM |
after missing wildly for a quick double break, Pegula has now lost 5 straight games to nothing special Potapova
by Anonymous | reply 139 | March 29, 2023 3:27 AM |
I think Eubanks is even rangier/thinner than Med - though, yes, they have the same general build. Med is a much better mover.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | March 29, 2023 3:27 AM |
I can see Pegula losing this set after all those early opportunities, winning the second set, and then someone will win the third AFTER being down a break. Or, she may even come back in this set. WTA matches often have such a different rhythm due to serves, generally, not being as big of a deal - thus breaks are more common.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | March 29, 2023 3:30 AM |
Something about Potapova I find very annoying. Grunts usually don't bother me but hers does. But that's not the full reason.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | March 29, 2023 3:37 AM |
Potapova is playing like a monster, hammering that ball with so much rage. Sheesh
by Anonymous | reply 143 | March 29, 2023 3:38 AM |
Rybakina or Sabalenka will destroy her. Their serves, if on, will be too much for her and Potapova's serve is average in comparison. Serving in those match ups probably will make the difference.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | March 29, 2023 3:41 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 146 | March 29, 2023 3:47 AM |
I don't find Potapova that impressive in any area. Solid groundstrokes, OK mover but average serve. She doesn't have any omg shots or attributes
by Anonymous | reply 147 | March 29, 2023 3:47 AM |
Pegula doesn't have any OMG shots or attributes - other than her consistently calm demeanor - and she's ranked 3 in the world. Granted she probably won't win Slams, but a player can go far being level and consistent.

by Anonymous | reply 150 | March 29, 2023 3:52 AM |
Pegula isn't the most powerful but she takes the ball early to rob opponents of time and absorbs pace of her opponents well.
Potapova seems pretty generic in comparison but she's playing better so far tonight

Amazing tournament for qualifier Eubanks.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | March 29, 2023 4:07 AM |
Huge for Eubanks - gets him into the mid 80s, so he should be able to play the next four Slams without qualifying.
And, during some weeks, he might be able to play some 250s without qualifying.
Still has to qualify for Masters and 500s - though he might attract some wild cards at US tournaments if he's not within rankings cutoff range.
And all of this is based on his current live ranking after tonight's win - obviously he can improve it.

There seem to have been a lot of uncalled lets in the Pegula-Potapova match…like I can hear and/or see the ball make contact with the net, but it’s not setting off the sensor, and the chair umpire isn’t calling them. She also missed that ball that double-bounced on Potapova’s side of the court.

by Anonymous | reply 242 | March 31, 2023 1:28 PM |
R242, I have seen John Eisner play pickleball on TV so I thin it's here to stay. My condo complex is replacing of the tennis courts with a pickleball court. Almost every town in NJ has an indoor pickleball court.
An actual pickleball game, with 4 players, is like doubles tennis and is a pretty good full-body workout. Played indoors you can work up quite a sweat.
by Anonymous | reply 243 | March 31, 2023 2:14 PM |

"While Pickleball (stupid ass name!) is growing, do we all think it's here to stay or a passing phase fad gone in 5, 10, plus years?"
I think it's here to stay, though I don't know how long it will keep growing. It's social, it's fun, it allows those in athletic decline or those who were never that athletic in the first place to compete in something. Like recreational tennis, there's different levels of seriousness for leagues and tournaments and such. There is a subset of the pickleball crowd that takes it super seriously. I'm amazed at how the sport took off.
I've played and it was okay but I didn't love it. I prefer tennis and platform tennis (played on the same sized court as pickleball but the courts are surrounded by screens (essentially chickenwire fencing) that you can play off of, and the balls are paddles are different. Since I'm a racquet sports person I wouldn't entirely rule pickleball out, but it would probably be when I felt like I couldn't hack other sports well enough for my liking. This isn't to imply that I'd just waltz on over and be good and pickleball, only that the physical burden is less.

by Anonymous | reply 281 | April 1, 2023 5:43 AM |
I knew Alcaraz would lose to Sinner. He's like his nemessis. He always lose to him. It's a terrible match-up. I'd say the only ones who can currently beat Alcaraz are the Italians and Djokovic.
by Anonymous | reply 282 | April 1, 2023 7:18 AM |
R279 I was actually thinking of placing a bet on Sinner. Just look at their H2H. Some tennis players can beat everyone, yet they struggle with one person. Sinner is that person for Alcaraz. I knew he would lose. I am so disappointed, not surprised, but still sad. I also have to say a huge fuck you to the Miami Open organizers who gave Alcaraz less time to rest between matches than Sinner. I think that also played a role in this loss.
by Anonymous | reply 283 | April 1, 2023 7:20 AM |
This loss pains me more than it should. I SO wanted Alcaraz to become historic, youngest to win both of the sunshine doubles in the same year as a teenager. I feel like he let everyone down when he lost, not only himself.
by Anonymous | reply 284 | April 1, 2023 7:22 AM |
It’s called Sunshine Double.
by Anonymous | reply 285 | April 1, 2023 7:24 AM |
From now on I'm gonna put money on Sinner every time. This is Fedal all over again. Federer could win against everyone.... except Nadal. Same shit with Alcaraz. Sinner has a way of getting into his head. It's just a terrible match up for him. He's basically a mental midget every match they play. When I heard Sinner was Alcaraz' next opponent I just knew he was gonna lose. I am so mad and disappointed in Alcaraz. Starting to wonder if maybe he should fire his coach. I feel like he has regressed in the past few months. I am not seeing any improvements. Sinner on the other hand is making massive progress. Thanks Alcaraz, thanks to you the MAGAt anti-vaxxer shithead is #1 again. I want to puke.

R286 you do realized Carlos just beat Sinner a week or so ago, right? At another Masters 1000 hardcourt tourney?
And he beat Sinner at the USO last year?
They are very, very evenly matched. It's going to be a rivalry for the next ten years much like Rafa and Novak. Each will have runs, depending on surface and form.
Just enjoy the amazing tennis.

by Anonymous | reply 290 | April 1, 2023 8:06 AM |
R289 I was about to say the exact same thing.
As much as I love the rivalry, I have to say that watching that kind of brutal tennis for more than an hour is exhausting. They are 19 and 21 respectively, can we watch them play that same kind of intense game for 10-15 more years? yesterday, I was exhausted after the first set and after the second set I decided I could not watch it anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 291 | April 1, 2023 8:12 AM |
R289 Doesn't matter. Sinner still has a positive H2H against Alcaraz. Just wait, next time they play the odds will be on Sinner to win. I still favor Sinner in every match they play. Alcaraz is a mental midget when playing him.
by Anonymous | reply 292 | April 1, 2023 8:20 AM |
R289 Why would I enjoy Sinner winning when I'm a fan of Alcaraz?!
by Anonymous | reply 293 | April 1, 2023 8:21 AM |
R292, they're tied 3-3 head to head. But feel free to think Sinner has Carlos' number. I just don't think the stats point to that as a reality. At least not yet. This is not Rafa v Fed, where Fed just couldn't beat Rafa anywhere besides Wimby (and he even lost there eventually).
R293, I get being a fan of one player over the another in a heated rivalry. I'm a Rafa fan and I hate it when Novak beats him. It actually depresses me. But I have come to appreciate the endless amazing matches/points that Rafa and Novak have displayed over the years. Even the ones Rafa lost.
My advice was to enjoy the "journey" not just your guy's wins. Or not. I don't actually care. Haha.
by Anonymous | reply 294 | April 1, 2023 8:37 AM |
Carlos needs to fire JCF. He is not progressing the way he should be. JFC deserves credit for getting Carlos to the top 10. But I feel like he needs a different coach to take him a step further.

Il Gingio, bitches!
by Anonymous | reply 296 | April 1, 2023 10:22 AM |
R292 Sorry but that's beyond dumb. Their h2h is 3-3 (and even Carlos won their challenger match). And Carlos won at the US Open saving match points.
Unlike most top players Sinner has weapons to cause damage to Carlos and both seem very concious that their rivaldry will make them grow as players.
I really like the sportmanship between them (Carlos said he was going to cheer for Jannik at the handshake)
by Anonymous | reply 297 | April 1, 2023 10:25 AM |
And the comparission between Rafa and Roger is simply ridiculous.
Rafa dominated their h2h even when Roger was clearly the better player back then (when the rivaldry started), and of course Roger was older and already a number one and a Slam winner the first time they played. In this case it's Sinner the one who is older.
Jannik is able to cause trouble to Carlos' game but there's no dominance in their rivladry right now (in fact Carlos won more easily at IW just a couple of weeks ago)
by Anonymous | reply 299 | April 1, 2023 10:27 AM |
Boobs out for the biggest winner of the week. Novaxx becomes number 1 for the 380th week without picking up a racquet. Wimbledon will award points and the US is changing the covid policy to allow him to play in US Open.
by Anonymous | reply 300 | April 1, 2023 3:13 PM |
Djokovic will also be able to play Cincinnati this year.
by Anonymous | reply 301 | April 1, 2023 3:19 PM |
They didn't change the policy just for Novak.
by Anonymous | reply 302 | April 1, 2023 3:26 PM |
Yeah, allowing him to..., happy now?
by Anonymous | reply 303 | April 1, 2023 4:12 PM |
R299 The comparison between them and Roger and Nadal is also Ridiculous because both Alcarez and Sinner are better players on all surfaces at younger age then Nadal. Nadal certainly dominated Federer on clay but he really wasn’t in the mix on the other surfaces until 2006-7. Nadal and Federer never met at the US Open. R295 Honestly you really think he should fire Ferraro after losing 1 match give me a break.
by Anonymous | reply 304 | April 1, 2023 5:25 PM |
Scarecrow Novaxx will be 36 next month. Please make this the year when his ranking drops off a cliff and his remaining slams flop hard, tennis gods.
by Anonymous | reply 305 | April 1, 2023 5:47 PM |
Alcaraz was injured two out of the three times that Sinner beat him.
by Anonymous | reply 306 | April 1, 2023 6:03 PM |
Federer fell off after he turned 37 right? Hopefully the same happens to the douchebag number 1 player.
by Anonymous | reply 307 | April 1, 2023 6:06 PM |
Nadal natural game gave Roger nightmares from the beginning.
It's true most of their matches were on clay (when Rafa is simply the best) but the first time they met was in Miami and teen Nadal trashed Federer who was number one back then (63 63).
Nadal never needed to play better than Roger to win because his forehand gaves Roger tons of trouble and because he was mentally stronger so if the match was tight in the end it went for Rafa most of the times

And that Petchey guy (never heard of him before) is so over the top with his comments he's ridiculous! Comparing every point almost like it's the greatest point every played, comparing players as artists and creating art right up there with the Sistine Chapel (WTF!) and so on....

by Anonymous | reply 358 | April 4, 2023 12:02 PM |
There's usually no separate specific tournament threads, R358. Maybe a Slam sometimes, but not usually. Though a specific tournament might be featured in the "The Gays and Tennis: Part X" thread. And traffic on the tennis threads ebbs and flows. It's sort of a dead zone this week as the clay season begins with smaller tournaments and the French Open doesn't start until the end of May. But there will be big combined clay events in Madrid and Rome leading up to the French. Plus the men have Monte Carlo fairly soon - that's a big Masters event for them.
