R39 Yeah, she’ll be putting everything on Tapas/Webtoon/Tumblr for free again. She’s said she wants to build up a good backlog of pages to get into a regular release schedule first. I feel like when she got started she said it would probably be a few months. She’s been drawing and posting one page a day on Patreon since February 3, she’s only skipped one Sunday I think. She sometimes edits/redraws pages before she compiles them into the episodes she posts online.

I’ve just finished reading the first four Heartstopper novels, but I swear there were a few scenes about Nick and Charlie’s makeouts getting heated and friends are like ‘you’re probably ready to have sex’ or something. Does anyone know where that’s from?

R43 He wants to get her permission to spend the night at Nick’s, gets the okay from his dad (who does the typical “but ask your mother” thing), Charlie makes multiple attempts to catch her in a good mood, they cook a new recipe together and it’s nice, he poses the question, she gives a sort of wishy washy “eventually”response referencing his upcoming GCSEs, he gets a bit teenagery and accuses her of not letting him do anything because he’s mentally ill, they generally communicate very badly with each other, Charlie storms out, his mum briefly recalls her horrible relationship with her own mum, Charlie vents to Nick about how his mum and everyone else treats him like he’s fragile because of his illness.

And Bash whatever the online fan gang think came into Heartstopper with the highest profile, most experience and most extensive CV. He was the lead in HTDBW and his current theatre role is a really significant one and built on the back of fifteen year career

I suppose I am saying it might take a little longer for Kit to get roles that reflect his ability and the social media noise around him. His career may end up being a slow burn but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing and working on good indie films is invaluable for experience and connections

I mean, if we want to be annoying we can pick anything apart. You could easily point out that Bash's theater role is outside of the West End. We should have (ideally) learned from the agonizing about Joe not having booked anything the last time. We don't know what these guys are and aren't up to long-term.

For the record I'm not Hercules truther, but that project + the other big ones people have theorized on when it comes to Kit are a while away. Hercules is unlikely to shoot this year. No one knows when the fuck Hulkling is popping up in the MCU because their slate is a mess right now. There aren't any other big projects coming up for his age range. It is what it is.

I genuinely really like both kit and Joe and think they were extremely good in Heartstopper, especially given it was I believe the first non supporting role for Kit and first role full stop for Joe. But there were still weak or unconvincing moments in both performances, nothing that overall reduced their efficacy but enough that I did sort of question people acting like Kit’s next role should be some huge Oscar bait. Both will grow a lot and I think/hope be extremely skilled and successful actors long term, they’re very good for their ages, but comparing them even to Timothee who was 19 or 20 in CMBYN and admittedly phenomenal, they’re not there yet. Indies are a cool move to let him develop his skills more and I wouldn’t be surprised if Joe’s non HS and non Marvel protects are indies.

Re bash, agreed and would add that he’s gotten a lot of praise as a standout in stage performance before and the critiques of his HS performance, which I get, are that he was a little over the top. That reduced subtlety often plays really well on stage and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was s stronger theatre actor.

I think I long ago mentioned indies as one of the thing I could see Kit doing as his next project, so I’m not surprised. Tentpoles are fun, but the roles in those that allow actors to act are really rare. There’s a reason why we’re only seeing an MCU actor nominated for an Oscar over a decade into the whole thing, and it’s not solely due to genre bias. The only big role I’m interested in Kit doing is Hulkling because of his chemistry with Joe and the way he fits the character, but otherwise I’m happy to see him pick something a little different.

West End theatres are still overbooked suffering with post Covid congestion and Chichester is one of the biggest events in the theatrical calendar. This role is a big deal whatever way you look at it and that is without mentioning he is Timmy’s replacement which is the least of it’s claims

Will be interesting to see how much Joe and Kit’s performances in season 2 have improved from Season 1. Agree there’s definitely room for growth in terms of how they deliver their lines, assuming Alice gives them decent scripts and enough to get their teeth stuck into.

I agree Timothee was a bit over praised for the movie but do honestly think it was still a strong and memorable performance for his age. Frankly I do think it was a good bit stronger than Joe and Kit’s performances in HS; not to slight them as I think the writing was also way stronger and Timothee literally went to a performing arts high school. I prefer Joe and Kit as personalities to Timothee by a good margin so I hope they get the same acclaim and opportunities as they develop

Realistically, no one in the Heartstopper cast is at the level or age to book a Paul Mescal in Streetcar at the Phoenix Theatre kind of West End gig or Paul Mescal in Ridley Scott's Gladiator 2 gig, and that's fine.

That’ll help them; if a teenage role in oscar bait comes up in 3 years they won’t be out of the running

That is not an insult I love theatre and have never doubted he has a secure if not illustrious career in that field if he chooses but they are different genres. Some move effortlessly between the two and are masters at both (think Andrew Scott in recent times) but most will always be stronger either in theatre or on screen

I remember him saying in an interview he wanted to work in film more and had everything to learn because it was relatively new to him. Because of that I hope it does work out well for him and I am very interested to see how his performances have evolved in HTDBW in particular where he will clearly have a lot of screen time. Working with Nick Frost and Guz Khan can only help

If this role lets Kit spread his wings a bit, acting-wise, and offers casting directors something interesting, it's a win for his CV, regardless if the film is mainstream success.

R103 I think there is a subtle but significant difference between an “in demand” award that likely takes a lot of its data from social media interactions and what is actually in demand from a casting point of view. No one is queuing up offering Kit roles he is a gifted actor but bottom line also a regular teenager at the start of his career. He has a lot of exposure from Heartstopper and social media more than most actors his age and it all helps but also a lot of competition and the reality is he is very much still building his CV

I will also say for Kit (and maybe Joe and others in future roles), putting in the work and being a standout even in a meh film is not a bad call, especially when you’re young. Obviously Jenna Ortega blew up with Wednesday but before that she did get a lot of praise for lifting and doing her best with Scream, especially with some weaker cast members. If Kit carries Cuban Girls Guide or Bash does with HTDBW, while a stronger project would be nice it’s not bad for them

It’s too easy to view Joe and Kit in a HS bubble talent-wise but agree with all the comments here: it’s easy to assume it’ll be an easy ride from here on in but it’s a tough old world out there and they’re at the beginning of their hopefully long careers. Kit’s definitely doing the right thing getting himself in with BFI and BAFTA and attending fashion shows and building all sorts of connections.

The Rocketman casting really was so good. There was a solid second where I thought this was Kit.

R98 Be for real, a teenager is not turning down a block buster to work on a small indie project. Kit has more experience but he's basically in the same boat at Joe. Not much before HS really matters. There are tons of actors to who never really make it from child actor to adult actor. Though I suspect Kit will have a good career. He's talented but he's also a hot white guy in a sea of other hot white guys so it's not going to be an easy as some people seem to think it will be.

If he's turning down blockbusters for any reason, it's because of his Heartstopper schedule. But, again, there are approximately 0 blockbuster roles for someone his age in anything this year.

Anyway, Kit'll be fine, he's the same person that got Rocketman with 0 hype and purely based on his abilities as a teenager. More opportunities will open up for him (and for Joe) when they hit their mid-20s.

I'd strongly suspect that Kit has something major lined up in the next year or two but just can't announce it yet. Likely with Marvel. He may even have been cast as Hulkling already but they just don't need him yet (probably unlikely but I can dream). He was already starting to get decent sized roles before Heartstopper blew up and gave him all the additional public awareness, so I'm pretty sure he'll be landing very big roles before long. In the meantime, he might prefer to fill his time with slightly smaller but equally challenging roles that will stretch his acting skills. I wouldn't be surprised if he plays a bad guy in the indie film because he keeps saying he'd love to play a baddie.

I think Joe is a really great actor for someone with so little experience, but - being honest - I think he got quite 'lucky' with the Wiccan role. Not lucky in that he didn't deserve it, but like someone said earlier, that role was basically made for him and is very specific. Without that, I doubt he would've had such a major breakout so soon. That's not to minimise his obvious talents, though.

Give it a few years, once they hit their 20's they'll be considered for more adult roles (even if he's back to playing a teen). Robert Pattison was 21-22 in Twilight. Timmy was 21 in CMBYN

I'll cling to the hope of Kit being Hulkling until they announced otherwise. I think Kit would have a very good chance of being offered the role, but I think it'll come down to whether him and Joe want to do another big project together, playing boyfriends, so soon after Heartstopper. I think they'd absolutely kill it as gay superheroes with the existing chemistry, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I hated the idea of Kit as Hulkling since I want Joe to work with other people, but doesn't seem like anything with them will be out for years and years anyway. Even Wiccan isn't going to be introduced until 2025 most likely

Though there is the question if doing another couple again so early in their careers and for something that will last for years is all that smart long term. Could be questions if they can actually stand on their own as actors. Good chemistry is not a real reason to repeat the same casting. A good actor should be able to have chemistry with everyone, or at least fake it enough to make it believable.

While I admit that Kit and Teddy have a high physical resemblance, I seem to be in the minority who don't think he should have been cast as Hulking. I think the two, especially Joe, need to work with more actors and have different chemistry, and repeatedly working with the same actor and playing same-sex couples does not sound like a good way to open up acting. And under the premise that the relationship between TB and NC is so similar, it is a lazy way to choose Kit as Hulking, which may make the chemical reaction on the screen overlap with the heartstopper.

Genuinely not aiming this at any one person, I’m sure some of my comments are like this too, but there’s no real need to compare Joe and Kit’s talent or success. The fact is they are both very good actors with room to grow and will almost certainly Have no overlap in the roles they go out for so there’s no real competition. Joe certainly got lucky with Wiccan but he didn’t “just get lucky”; nor is he stuck in some blockbuster Kit would definitely decline. Flip side, Kit is really talented and not lining up something massive yet isn’t a sign he isn’t in demand. It’s more likely he’s on casting agents radars to keep an eye on for roles that might come up as he ages a bit. They’re both in great positions coming out of their first season on a show, their careers will I’m sure be good

I can't think of a single pair of actors that have been affected this way over working together multiple times as love interests. I think you're overthinking it. Heartstopper is also pretty niche, so in this hypothetical scenario Wiccan/Hulkling would be the first time a lot of people are introduced to Joe and Kit at all, let alone to the concept of them playing a couple.

Joe landing that is great both for the paycheque, steady work, and exposure, but also because I would bet his character arcs will be legitimately very well written since they’re capitalizing on the Wanda connection

It is awkward because the show has joint leads so it feels like Joe always gets overlooked and in some areas that would be correct but in the case of an acting award if it’s between the two of them it would make no sense to nominate Joe and not Kit. They both put in excellent performances and carried the show but it is also pretty difficult to argue Kit didn’t have the edge on Joe through a combination of better material and working with Olivia if nothing else.

I really don’t think that will be the case next season so a conversation can be had around homophobia and heteronormative representation if Kit continues to be recognised over Joe but for now although it feels harsh because both performances were stand out it is also just about fair

I think Joe was actually phenomenal for his first ever job, and he is actually my favourite cast member by a mile, but he was brand new in a way kit wasn’t and I think Kit’s additional comfort and experience showed in some scenes. In most I Think they were very equal or one had a slight edge (would give Kit the edge in the hallway scene and Joe in the first kiss scene) but Joe was learning to act on camera in takes that had to go in the show due to schedule, so the earlier episodes he was still good but had shakier moments.
