Great score

by Anonymousreply 1February 24, 2023 3:22 PM

I’d rather discuss The Rise of Roman Todd.

by Anonymousreply 2February 24, 2023 3:24 PM

As an inhabitant of the modern world, I was startled by the beauty of the recreation of Ancient Rome's Great Forum.

by Anonymousreply 3February 24, 2023 3:27 PM

Movie is well acted. Well scored, but it never lands

no comments?

by Anonymousreply 8February 24, 2023 7:58 PM

It was okay, but there was room for improvement.

by Anonymousreply 9February 24, 2023 8:01 PM

Stephen Boyd has a big head.

Not anymore.

Has that happened yet?

[quote]He was hot in his helmet

So Stephen is cut, then.

by Anonymousreply 14March 4, 2023 1:54 PM

I haven’t seen it. A movie about little Romulus Augustulus. Interesting.a

Or is it about Constantine XI Palaiologos?

Speaking of Romulus Augustulus, there is a movie about him, The Last Legion, starring Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Colin Firth. In it Romulus flees to Britain where he is later revealed to be the father of King Arthur. Merlin is played by Ben Kingsley.

It was a complete failure

The OP is an obsessive list-maker. Addicted to empty cutting-and-pasting.

by Anonymousreply 19March 4, 2023 5:06 PM

Silly op, the Roman Empire didn’t fall in 1964. If it had still been around then, I would remember!

These people are nobody hacks.

Chuck Heston refused to appear in this "melange" (ie. hodgepodge or mishmash). Talented thespians in small roles and boorish fools in large roles.

Good sets and crisp photography.

by Anonymousreply 21March 4, 2023 5:11 PM

R19 I don't cut and paste. I research and like to give people credit. Why do you hate me.

by Anonymousreply 22March 4, 2023 5:12 PM

Recall an interview with Sophia when she said Boyd was on her least favorite leading men as he was a bit "cold to women".

[quote] The Fall of the Roman Empire

In contrast with the "declining empire" theories, historians Arnold J. Toynbee and James Burke argue that the Roman Empire itself was a rotten system from its inception, and that the entire Imperial era was one of steady decay of its institutions. In their view, the Empire could never have lasted.

This mess of a movie shows insufficient decadence. I'd rather a doco by Arnold J. Toynbee instead of this cinematic melange by an American Dumbo whose real name was Emil Anton Bundsmann.

Was Emil Anton Bundsmann gay?

He was a Theososphist who thought the young Krishna could walk on water.

I imagine this is like watching a video cartoon, splashed large. If you want to see a great series about Rome watch the two complete seasons of ROME on HBO. Quite wonderful, all and appropriately nasty, messy, real and decadent.

by Anonymousreply 30March 4, 2023 10:40 PM

This was a boring movie

by Anonymousreply 31March 4, 2023 11:06 PM

I agree R10.

The OP's poster seems to imply the two people on the left are the stars while the three on the right are supporting players.

This poster is much more egalitarian — and democratic.

R23, he may not have been attracted to her. She's top-heavy with big lips.

R23, R24, R26, R28, R33

We've been gossiping about him for 45 years but we still haven't heard anything credible about the private life of this attractive male-model.

Stephen Boyd was married, therefore he was not gay

by Anonymousreply 35March 5, 2023 2:36 PM

I hate when they put spoilers in the title.

by Anonymousreply 36March 5, 2023 2:42 PM

I remember it as turgid. The editing was so slow and stately that it was snore inducing. Loren had nothing to do except collect a paycheck and the male stars were each given a cinema moment. They looked like movie stills.

by Anonymousreply 37March 5, 2023 3:33 PM

Anthony Mann is a director of some excellent westerns and film noir.

Unfortunately, somewhere around the late 1950s his movies turned boring and bloated and seemed to be the work of a bloated hack.

by Anonymousreply 38March 5, 2023 3:36 PM

I love this move. Just as I love "The Greatest Story Ever Told." Endless. Turgid. Fabulous.

by Anonymousreply 39March 5, 2023 5:01 PM

This short speech by Marcus Aurelius was the highlight of the movie.

Yes r40, I was about to post a similar comment. They wasted far too much time on the romance but Alec Guinness and James Mason's scenes make the film worth watching.

by Anonymousreply 41March 6, 2023 6:41 AM

Oh R30--you speak for me!!! I think I love you!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 42January 23, 2025 9:02 PM

Was Boyd a homosexualist?

by Anonymousreply 43January 23, 2025 9:10 PM

The title is misleading . The empire lasted for 284 years after Commodus. Not counting East Rome.

by Anonymousreply 44January 23, 2025 9:14 PM

Christopher Plummer as Commodus is only interested in "gladiators and games." He plays the part as a gay villain.

by Anonymousreply 45January 23, 2025 9:35 PM

The film actually addressed that right before the closing credits.

R48, why do you need to stream it when r47 posted a link to the entire movie on Youtube.
