It's a great movie and quite historically accurate. Gladiator is pretty much a remake of this.

Neither this film nor Gladiator are historically accurate, though The Fall of the Roman Empire is somewhat more accurate. The historical inaccuracy begins with the title which they try to gloss over with an explanation at the end.

The fall of the Roman Empire occurred in 1964 even I know it occurred a lot earlier than that- at least 1904.

Clearly this film gave someone the idea for "Gladiator" (always with the excuse that it was a new retelling rather than a remake - that old chestnut).
While "Gladiator" is far sillier, Scott's film also has more memorable elements, including the director's staging of action sequences and a stronger centre - Crowe's performance.
Weirdly, another Scott film - "Kingdom of Heaven" - also takes inspiration from an Anthony Mann film - "El Cid". I have no doubt that William Monahan and Ridley Scott watched or rewatched the Mann film. In preparation for theirs.
There's even a scene in which an enemy prince is spared to return the favour at a later date.
And, regardless of what anyone may claim, the director's cut for "Kingdom of Heaven" is NOT A great film and "El Cid" shits all over it.

An ugly expression, R10.

[quote] This was a boring movie
It took two centuries for the complete fall of the Roman Empire. Sophia Loren couldn't wait that long.

[quote] Stephen Boyd was hot
He was an utterly gorgeous male model for ten years.
But his face grew hard and old in 1967.

I reckon he was more pretty than Guy Madison (who seems to be Datalounge's Eldergay favorite).
