I would love to see Large Marge's proposal in action. First, the red states would collapse because there would be no one to fund their SSDI/Social Security payments; all of the doctors would flee and hospitals would close because there would be no Medicare; and all of the military bases that form the foundation of so many red state economies would shutter because there would be no military funding to keep them open. Folks in red states just don't seem to understand that their economies depend far more on government largess than blue states, which will be laid bare should Marge get her wish.

The border would be overrun immediately because all of the states that love to complain about immigration (and engage in despicable stunts like sending immigrants to the Vice President's house and Martha's Vineyard) would suddenly discover that the Federal dollars that pay for immigration and border control would stop — and pray tell where are Florida and Texas going to get the funding to make up for that Federal handout? It's not like either Texas or Florida has an industry with a robust future without blue state support. It's not like illicit drug kingpins in Florida or oil magnates in Texas pay their fair share of income taxes. Which brings up another point I'd like to hear Marge address: who's going to pay the oil companies' huge subsidies? I'd love to see ExxonMobile have to beg California and New York legislatures to make up that shortfall.

The socialism that we practice in the US would come to an abrupt halt; for instance, government support now makes up approximately 40% of farm income. The argument that the red states produce all the food would be revealed with the reality that blue states produce just as much — if not more — food than red states, they just do it without as much government support. And it's not that there isn't Federal money spent everywhere, it's how the money is spent: lost dollars to red state farm income supplements is not the same as blue state infrastructure spending benefitting agriculture.

Marge is deluding herself by playing into this misconception that red states would be just fine without having to suffer blue state sensibilities. Maybe it's time for a wakeup call. Let's pass a Federal law that requires that every tax dollar collected in a given state must be spent in that state and see how it shakes out.
