Will Cate earn an Oscar for her extra-hammy performance in Tar?
Third Oscar for Cate Blanchett? Part 2

Better not tell you now.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 15, 2023 9:20 PM |
I can understand how some people can call things hammy or pretentious. The fact is, if you have seen the movie and if you understand how they are made, that Blanchett pulled off some seriously skilled acting and gave a performance of a lifetime. Michelle Yeoh may win Oscar because Cate has 2 already and Oscar seems to be favouring more diversity over acting skill these days. If you haven't seen TÁR, the 10 minute Julliard scene is an Oscar performance by Cate. One take, many complex camera moves so she has to: act with an American accent, hit the marks so that the other actors are in frame, play piano and impersonate people while doing it. In addition, the dialogue is very complicated for that scene, lots of places to make errors, plus she is working against a relatively inexperienced actor who may fuck up at any time and try to focus on her own and his performance. Bravo Cate , and bravo to the director and the people behind the camera. Apparently it took 2 days and 12 takes to complete so just that endurance without saying fuck it and using the usual tricks to make the scene seem seamless is very impressive.

Tar is incredible and Cate Blanchett is BRILLIANT in it.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 17, 2023 1:54 AM |
I thought I wouldn't be able to finish it but I did. It is very very slow and the showy stuff doesn't come until the end. I did not expect that twist at the end about where she came from. I wouldn't watch it again but I thought it was an interesting take on the changing nature of power and the dynamics of cancel culture. I can understand why some find it overrated and polarizing. In terms of Cate, I think it's a fine performance but certainly not nomination worthy. Also, her desperate attempts to get that elusive third Oscar are getting really annoying. She keeps saying I'm really done I'm really done with acting. My ass. She thinks she's way smarter than she actually is.

Colin Farrell and Cate Blanchett are bookies favourite to triumph at Sunday's 76th British Academy Film Award.
The stars are expected to walk away with Best Actor and Best Actress gongs, for their roles in The Banshees Of Inisherin and Tar respectively.
Cate, 53, enjoys healthy odds of 8/15 followed by Michelle Yeoh. Yeo, 60, is close behind for spellbinding performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once after waiting 40 years for a nomination. bookies have placed her at 15/8.

Backstage Blanchett told why this movie was different for her.
"The character couldn't be further or away from my own experience, but perhaps where I deeply connected with her circumstance – she's more than a character, she's a sort of a, she has a kind of a spatial crisis in a way," Blanchett said.
"She's coming to the end of something. She's coming to the end of a teaching cycle, the end of an artistic cycle, and she's about to hit 50.
"I've moved beyond 50," Blanchett added, partially covering her mouth mockingly as she said the words.
However, the Australian actress said the idea of changing life as we know it in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic seemed particularly poignant and personal for her.
There were certain changes creatively and personally, you know, that I thought there was the only opportunity out of that devastating event is to make changes that you've been wanting to make for a long time," Blanchett said cryptically.
"So and that's sort of being apart... I mean, my daughter was there in Berlin, but it was, I was away from my husband and my other three children for quite a while so it was very painful."

How about when Cate said, "I don't think a lot about legacy."
But she does love to collect awards - will the awards be considered a part of her legacy?
Within the past year, Goya, Cesar, the Chaplin, etc. Not to mention all of the film festival awards this year and the past. And Cannes/Venice President.
I tend to think if the local community center gave her an award, she'd show up.

It's not that Cate isn't a tremendous talent. We all know she is.
But she already has two Oscars. If the Academy Award is meant to recognize talent among actors, then what "statement" will be made by the third statue that wasn't already conveyed with the first two?
Her stature is secure, as is Meryl's.
She should do the classy thing, like Candy Bergen, and decline future nominations just to give other actresses a chance.

Yes. I was a very early Cate fan (when just coming from Australia), but feel she’s now become smug, pretentious and preachy. Years of being lauded has gone to her head. And it seems to have impacted her professionally.
Having seen both Cate and Michelle, believe Michelle should win the Oscar. Definitely. Michelle doesn’t overact.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 23, 2023 6:20 PM |
R42 If anyone can catch Hepburn's record it will be Frances McDormand, who has won 3 Leading Oscars already. Streep has 3 Oscars but only 2 Leading, and if Blanchett wins, she's tie Streep (1 supporting, 2 lead).
If there is an upset this year, it will be Yeoh over Blanchett. I think the other acting categories are all decided at this point.

At the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts’ 12th annual AACTA International Awards.
Austin Butler followed up his BAFTA triumph by taking Best Lead Actor for playing the King in Elvis, and the pic’s Baz Luhrmann won Best Director. Cate Blanchett continued impressive her awards-season run with another Best Lead Actress win for her title role in Tár. It’s her third win in the category, having won for Carol and Blue Jasmine in 2015 and 2013, respectively.
It is no surprise they chose an Australian actress, and an actor for a film made in Australia.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | February 25, 2023 11:35 PM |
I hope she does win a third Oscar.
We have quite a few 'loving legend' actresses among us today, those who deserve Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor-level status.
Prolific, versatile actresses with long careers who have done some great movies, some bombs, and are always excellent no matter the quality of the projects they do.
Among them: Meryl, Cate B, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, Glenn Close, Helen Mirren, Toni Collette, Claire Danes, Renée Zellweger, Julianne Moore, Emily Watson, Emma Thompson, Susan Sarandon. IMO.

Hardly. She's not a stunt woman at all. She was a ballet dancer who doesn't know and never learned martial arts and she has to be taught the moves by the stunt coordinators and then she executes them flawlessly because of her dance training.
And I hate seeing people say she would be a "diversity win". That's so disrespectful! Would you like them to create a special little category and put an asterisk next to her and every other actor of color's name on the Oscars website?
She deserves to win because she's a fucking BRILLIANT actress who has displayed range in things like Crouching Tiger, Crazy Rich Asians, EEAAO, and even a Star Trek series! She was amazing in EEAAO. She was a sad sack who turned into a hero while jumping thorough space and time while her marriage was falling apart and her kid was trying to unravel the fucking universe with an everything bagel and she made it seem real!! And sad and funny and exciting to watch. There are so many moments in that movie where just the change of expression on her face tell you more than the dialogue.
If Michelle Yeoh wins an Oscar it's because Michelle Yeoh deserves an Oscar.

Cate Blanchett has now revealed that she was told to stop working after filming for the 'all consuming' psychological drama wrapped last year.
The actress, 53, discussed her performance as Lydia Tár with The Argonauts author Maggie Nelson, while posing for a quirky cover shoot with AnOther Magazine.
Detailing the exhausting nature of the role, Cate said: 'After we finished, Todd just put his hand on my shoulder and said, "You shouldn't work for a while."
'Something had happened to both of us through the process of making it. If you're lucky it happens once, maybe twice in your life ... but this was the process of encountering one another and it was all-consuming'

[quote]Cate has won only 2 SAG awards. Blue Jasmine and Avaiator. She has never been a heavy favorite to win SAG.
Those were the exact same two movie she won an Oscar for. Every time she's lost the SAG, she's also lost the Oscar
So if she didn't win the SAG this year, it's doesn't bode well for her at the Oscars.

R126 thanks for the link. Long interesting interview. Cate and this woman seem to be trying to outdo each other in a word battle.
From this interview: it seems Cate is itching to say exactly what she thinks of the character but afraid of being judged for her opinion.

I watched Tar last week and hated it. SO FUCKING BORING!! Yes, Cate is very good in it but she would be good in a movie like Freddy Got Fingered. The movie is long, boring, tedious, incoherent pretentious, stupid and NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENS!! Wasted 2 hours and 38 minutes of my precious life watching this mess. If you want to watch Cate in a lesbian role, watch Carol. Much much better movie and it actually makes sense.

Yea, so she's obviously a diversity hire. A friend from high school's middle kid identifies as non-binary so I, by virtue of knowing someone who knows some gender non-cornforming, was also a diversity hire at my job. I love pulling in all the extra millions of dollars at my small non-profit and rubbing it in the white heterosexual cisgender person's faces.

R106 People on DL seem to automatically detest any actor or actress who does consistently well, as well as any actor or actress who has ambition to do well. There's no objective measure of a good performance, but to me, Cate is one of those actors whose performances seem inarguably excellent, and consistently so from the beginning.
Her Elizabeth was elegant and commanding and powerful, and she was only 28 when she played her. She didn't have as much screen time as most others in Lord of the Rings, in which she was mysterious, elegant and scary, and The Talented Mr. Ripley, in which she was daft and silly, and she stands out as memorable and extremely important among talented casts.
It seems ridiculous to me to suggest Blanchett is 'hammy' in all her roles and that her time is up. People say there are no more movie stars and to me she's one of the few counterparts to Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn still making movies.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | March 2, 2023 8:48 AM |
Her only performance that didn’t land for me was Lord of the Rings. She acts like she’s on quaaludes the entire time. Otherwise, she’s ranged from very good to brilliant in everything else I’ve seen her in, and I’ve seen most of her stuff.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | March 2, 2023 8:58 AM |
R140 I didn't love LOTR the first time around and her character stood out in my mind for many years as the best part of it. I'm not an action/battle-scene person so much and her strange, mystical creature and graceful movements and deep voice somehow anchored the whole narrative for me. I really liked Liv Tyler's performance, too, but upon rewatching recently after many years (and loving everything about the movies except some overlong battles), it struck me that Liv's role was a lot bigger than I remembered and Cate's was a lot smaller.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | March 2, 2023 9:03 AM |
She's also amazing in Notes on a Scandal, and comparing that with, for example, Elizabeth and Mr. Ripley, shows her wild range and control. Notes on a Scandal is campy, as is Ripley. Elizabeth is all power with some vulnerability.
Her Ripley character is all brass and ignorance and obnoxiousness with some vulnerability and no ill will or menace.
There's no hint of 'powerful' in the Notes on a Scandal character. She's entirely vulnerable, but she's also a villain, and not accidentally so, and she's self-deluded, and utterly pathetic, but also sort of proud and weak at the same time. There are a lot of shared qualities between the Ripley character and the Notes character—hardly any between those two and Elizabeth except vulnerability—and yet the characters are entirely different. The one from Ripley is unbearably annoying and comically stupid but also kind of a victim, and the one in Notes is only annoying because she's a monster, yet she attempts to be and fails at being cunning, she's immoral and she knows it, she appears to have a conscience about it but she doesn't, and she seems utterly weak and vulnerable but is doing bad things and feeling victimized, and the only sympathy we have for her is because of how Judi Dench torments her. And although the movie is regarded as campy, both her performance and Dench's performance manage to be arch and yet deeply sad and funny.
That movie could have been a throwaway Lifetime movie without such brilliant starring actors. I think she is magnificent. All her performances are so layered. I feel the same way about Kidman, Danes and usually Zellweger.
The one I don't really get is Reese Witherspoon. She seems to be a mastermind of a businessperson, but her acting has always felt superficial to me, which worked really well in Legally Blonde and Election, but with Blanchett, I feel like we get endless layers of psyche with every role, and when the role calls for it, with a layer of hilarity on top.

by Anonymous | reply 144 | March 2, 2023 11:42 AM |
Tough call. This was arguably the best role Michelle Yeogh has had and she was fun in it--although not the most accomplished actress and hardly no extraordinary acting going on here. After the exposition, the movie basically devolves in a series of martial arts set pieces. (however, let's be honest worse actresses have won for worse performances). I think people will want to support a first Asian Best Actress winner and th movie has a lot of momentum and a near certain Best Picture win. It's hard though because Blanchett really easily gives the best performance in the category. Tar was more of a critics favorite than an audience favorite-and that character is rather unsympathetic. It's also very hard to pick up that third Oscar--historically its just been Hepburn, Meryl and Frances McDormand. And Meryl & Kate had to wait like 30 years between #2 and #3. McDormans came quicker but that was also the buzzard asterisk pandemic year
by Anonymous | reply 145 | March 2, 2023 12:09 PM |
I don't think that her being the first Asian to win Best Actress is the reason people would vote for her as much as voting for her whole body of work which has gone unacknowledged. She's very popular in Hollywood.

R157 Danes hasn'r headlined a lot of big movies, but she has been excellent in everything she's done, and she has done a lot:
My So-Called Life
Romeo + Juliet
Brokedown Palace
The Hours
Temple Grandin
Homeland
Stardust
...and a lot more. She's been extremely versatile, playing delicate girly girls and mannish autistic and hardened CIA agent and more, always convincingly.
I do think she belongs among better-known great actresses of the era, she's just under the radar with less celebrated projects.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | March 2, 2023 10:58 PM |
R2 Yeoh established and maintained the profoundly emotional throughline of a film that spanned multiple genres, from action and comedy to sci-fi and horror, while playing to those genres with skill and aplomb, often simultaneously, and in a second language (i.e., English). And she did so without ever winking at or patronizing but rather illustrating and mirroring for the audience with sublime delicacy the universal “hero’s journey” expounded upon by the likes of Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, Otto Rank, and Lord Raglan. She was genius.
Blanchett was phenomenal but Yeoh was ultimately more skillful and impactful and, ultimately, human.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | March 2, 2023 11:20 PM |

R158 I was not impressed with anything about Romeo + Juliet. I liked her in Stardust but the top female performance of that movie was definitely Michelle Pfeiffer. She was competent in Evening but she also didn't have to share any scenes with Vanessa Redgrave or Meryl and I don't know if I bought her as a young Vanessa Redgrave. She lacked chemistry with Patrick Wilson, whereas there was clearly something between her and Hugh Dancy's gay character so she came across as terribly unlikable after she drives Hugh Dancy to suicide and keeps mooning over Patrick Wilson.
I have no recollection of her in The Hours. Was she supposed to be Meryl's daughter?

Cate has odd features and it's always been an asset. She's oddly beautiful, with al the strangeness working to her advantage.
I did notice the fillers in her cheeks years ago. I thought, oh, no, here we go. But she worked it out IMO. She is 53 and she looks like herself totally to me.
The main reason her cosmetic procedures are obvious is that she doesn't look 53. I'd say early to mid-40s, but a well-maintained person of that age range.
I think she must have had at least one deep-plane facelift. She doesn't look the way she looks because of injectables or 'good genes.' Her skin doesn't sag at all and by now she would not have the jawline she has without manual tugging and tightening.

Yes-forgot that Ingrid Berman had a third as well--although her third was almost 20 years after the second. Michelle Yeoh Yeoh Ma is taking the Oscar. Her Hippity-Hoppity little co-star, BSActor. BSActress, JLC.
Best Actor? Probably Brendan Fraser. I went to see "Elvis" in the theater again yesterday (Thursday). While Austin's performance has been praised and rewarded, and I agree with all accolades, I am not convinced that his dramatic (non-singing) scenes were of sufficient duration to garner the Oscar. And for that I blame Baz, who too often when given a choice, took the Baz Style route over substance. And Tom H. as Col. Parker had way too much on-screen time without Butler, and too much dialogue with.
Topic: But hey! From their photos, Cate seems to be rather fond of Austin!

Cate was excellent in tar. Embarrassing how all the minorities have editorialized all their wins during their speeches. “I’m the first asian actress blah blah blah.” Well if you stayed in china, you wouldn’t have been there so f off. As if American owes minorities or smaller population groups something just because they’re minorities. Retarded.

The win for Blue Jasmine really solidified Cate as one of the greats in her profession. She was against Sandra, Amy Admas, Meryl, Judi Dench and beat them all. Now to think she may lose out on this Oscar for what may be her greatest performance, over Wokeness . Even more pitiful that she may lose to a martial arts/ Kung fu actress

I don't think woke culture is to blame if Cate Blanchett doesn't win her third Oscar this year. Michelle Yeoh's film is clearly more popular among the American guilds, performed much better at the box office, and gave her a more emotional role than Blanchett had in Tár.
The Academy also has a significant international membership that I wager is less interested in political correctness, diluting the impact of those who are inclined to vote based on the narrative of awarding Best Actress to an Asian woman for the first time in history.
For what it's worth, I simply think Yeoh was better and that Tár and Blanchett's performance are overpraised. Field's first film, In the Bedroom, was superior, as were the lead performances of Tom Wilkinson and Sissy Spacek.

by Anonymous | reply 266 | March 7, 2023 5:03 PM |
I wouldn't go as far as saying that she's never been considered a legitimate actress, but the remaking of Michelle Yeoh into this great talent is bizarre.
She was good in Crouching Tiger, but the real standout from that movie was Zhang Ziyi, and she's fine in Crazy Rich Asians, but that's a role that any competent actress could do in her sleep. Beyond that, there's the awful Memoirs of a Geisha, a Mummy sequel that no one remembers and I guess she was in Sunshine.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | March 7, 2023 5:04 PM |
She was also in a James Bond film and a Jackie Chan Police Story sequel nobody remembers! She’s Huppert and Adjani combined!

It's obvious Cate will win. This is not the woke awards
by Anonymous | reply 271 | March 7, 2023 6:27 PM |
R266 - Yes Isabelle Huppert is a great actress. I'd much rather watch her than Cate even in one on her stinkers. In a way The Piano Teacher is a forerunner of Tar but Isabelle didn't get a nomination I guess because the role was too edgy.

This is apparently what R273 is talking about. Yeoh (or more accurately, Yeoh's publicity team) posted an article that argues that Cate Blanchett already has two Oscars and there hasn't been a non-white winner in the category in decades, so Yeoh should win.
Bad move, but I can't even pretend to be offended about it, and I think every nomination for Everything Everywhere is ridiculous.

No, if she wins, she'll give a very gracious speech, acknowledge Cate, will be remembered as the first Asian actress to win on Oscar and 99% of the world will never know or remember what happened before or care until those that do all die. And then in the future when there are other Asian actresses who win Oscars and a second Black woman finally wins an Oscar, all the racist "ew, this is obviously a diversity award" whiners will be dead. R285 Yeohs career has been middling at best. She got a lucky break in a shit film like EEAAO where she gets to show off her stunt woman shtick and register pained expressions on her face every few minutes. This is hardly Blanchett or Streep territory. Every actress in the lead actress category is better and can do what Yeoh could never pull off in her wildest dreams. Even Yeoh herself would tell you this. Please live in reality and not the multiverse.

I wanna see Cate and Meryl do the fight scenes that Michele who IS NOT a stunt woman, but a ballerina, does. And made people cry at the thought of having to stop her her daughter from destroying the multiverse with an everything bagel.
You keep calling it a "shit movie" but it has more nominations and better reviews than Tār.

R290, that brutally honest Oscar voter is a complete idiot. Good fucking lord!
by Anonymous | reply 292 | March 8, 2023 2:37 AM |
But the relevant bit is
For me, it was really close between [Tár’s] Cate [Blanchett] and [Everything Everywhere All at Once’s] Michelle [Yeoh]. Cate gets lost in Lydia Tár — it’s such an incredible performance — but to see what Michelle, a woman who’s so overdue, did in her movie, with the action and the fighting and the emotion? I had to pick Michelle. Tie goes to the person who hasn’t won over the person who already has two.
by Anonymous | reply 293 | March 8, 2023 2:43 AM |
R291 You know how ridiculous the way you describe the movie is don’t you? Did you actually keep a straight face while typing it? Streep and Blanchett would never lower themselves in doing the junk that Yeoh has built her career on. EEAAO got a few more nominations because of its tech crap. And it’s an extremely polarizing love it or hate it type film, in which many Oscar voters are going to place it last on the ballot to keep it from winning. Most people can’t get through it in one sitting. I doubt it’s gotten better reviews numbers wise than Tar. If you want to provide links, go for it. From reputable sources.
by Anonymous | reply 294 | March 8, 2023 2:47 AM |
I can’t imagine wanting to win knowing people only voted for me because of nothing to do with my actual performance. Then again, Yeoh has never been a prestige actress.

R292, they always publish the idiots. They don’t want voters who are going to make well-reasoned choices, they want the ones whose reason for their votes will piss everyone off.
The EEAAO cultists are getting ridiculous with their praise for Yeoh. She does her own stunts, but she’s not a stunt woman, she’s a ballerina! (She never did it professionally). At least they haven’t started calling her Dr. Yeoh like I’ve seen elsewhere (it’s Honorary, and from the AFI at that).
by Anonymous | reply 297 | March 8, 2023 2:57 AM |
R295 bingo. If Blanchett wins it’ll be based on performance. If Yeoh wins, it’ll be based on its time for the second woman of color to win lead actress for a mediocre, forgettable film. Pure and simple.
by Anonymous | reply 298 | March 8, 2023 2:58 AM |
R292 many of them are idiots and haven’t seen any of the films. The Blanchett Yeoh rationale is especially galling. One has two already the other doesn’t have one yet. The fucker probably voted for third Oscars for Streep, Day Lewis and McDormand the last ten years.

by Anonymous | reply 300 | March 8, 2023 3:04 AM |
R300 Wtf are you talking about? Yeoh could be purple for all I care. If Yeoh pulls it off, it won’t be based only on her performance, which is nothing special. Practically everyone voting for her will feel this need to give it to the first Asian to win in this category. If you think that’s not going to figure into it, you’re deluding yourself. Nothing racist in what I said, so lay off the crack pipe.

Who give a shit about Best Actress? Lenny Kravitz is doing the In Memoriam section. That will draw tens of people to watch the telecast.
Lenny Kravitz — In Memoriam Along with a host and awful dance numbers, the “In Memoriam” segment is an Oscar staple that has been a part of the ceremonies for decades. The segment usually features one musician singing a ballad as pictures and clips of people in the film industry who passed away are displayed across the screen. Past singers of this segment include Sammy Davis Jr., Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Queen Latifah, and Celine Dion.
Deadline recently confirmed that rock singer Lenny Kravitz will sing in this year’s “In Memoriam” segment.

by Anonymous | reply 344 | March 8, 2023 9:11 PM |
Just Carol and TAR. And I guess The Aviator, but that movie bought into the hetero Kat Hepburn (hahahahahha) mythos. I don’t get why she’s made out to be some extremely lezzie seeming icon.
People also do this for Rachel Weisz (who I do think is a lez, FWIW) and she’s also only played two lesbian roles.
Catherine Deneuve has played about five! But French actresses are much less neurotic about sexuality on screen in general.
by Anonymous | reply 345 | March 8, 2023 9:19 PM |
There are other women who have played and continue to play more lesbian roles than Cate. She is not the first " big name" to play such roles. Also, i dont believe Cate has aby issues with playing lesbisn roles otherwise she wouldn't sign up for them. I think the obsessive, cult like lesbian fandom makes her dismissive of these claims of " lesbian icon"

Yeoh will win because she's Asian.
It will look very, very bad if a white woman who already won an Oscar wins over an Asian woman who could be the first lead actress to win it for her race.
The Academy will not want to deal with those bad optics.

Hell I have to stop reading here before bed!
I just had a dream where Cate won but was incredibly drunk. She'd ordered all the women to line up against the walls and told them this is the moment they will claim back their power. Then she singled out Viola, telling her she's the most magical person she's met and is so "chaotic" (as a compliment), and someone must remind her to get them an important movie together. She then started rambling about her dad leaving her mum when she was a kid and everyone being palpably uncomfortable.

NYT predicts Michelle Yeoh:
Unless Riseborough pulls off a win even more shocking than her surprise nomination, this battle royal comes down to Blanchett and Yeoh, the season’s top prize-earners. Both women are so fabulous in what will almost certainly be their signature roles that I’m hoping for a deeply unlikely tie, but I do think the scales will tip toward Yeoh in the end: Blanchett already has two Oscars, and Yeoh’s first win would be historic in a category where no women of color have won since Halle Berry over two decades ago. If voters want to give this telecast the sort of memorable, dream-come-true moment that will be referenced for years to come, they’ve got to pick Yeoh.

Speaking of the Oscars, I hate that most acceptance speeches aren’t heartfelt, and sound prerecorded. It’s usually acknowledging fellow nominees, then a dive into thanking producers, agents, etc. Very impersonal.
On the other hand, Michelle and Jamie Lee would just lecture us, so maybe the first option is less painful.

Cate Blanchett Tries Out This Season’s Most Divisive Accessory
by Anonymous | reply 378 | March 10, 2023 6:33 PM |
Attending the Green Carpet Fashion Awards in Hollywood, Blanchett wore a custom Valentino haute couture suit, made from a mix of deadstock and archival fabrics from the atelier. The actor paired the mint green slouchy trouser suit—which featured striking black lapels on the blazer—with a tonal shirt and black court shoes. It’s the small details that give the look its quirky edge, however, with Blanchett wearing a giant pink bow on her left hip as well as the stand-out accessory from the fall 2023 shows: a black tie.

Hopkins gave a performance for the ages in The Father. Boseman was borderline supporting and the movie wasn’t universally loved. Plus posthumous Oscar wins are very rare. Heath Ledger and Peter Finch are the only two to do it in acting and only 16 in total have ever been awarded.
by Anonymous | reply 381 | March 10, 2023 6:42 PM |
Are posthumous acting wins rare because voters don't fall for the narrative, or are they rare simply because the nominations themselves are so rare, R381? There have been nine total nominations (the two winners, Boseman, Spencer Tracy, Massimo Troisi, Jeanne Eagels, Ralph Richardson and two for James Dean) out of nearly two thousand acting nominations, so this may be a case where the sample size is too small to draw any conclusions.
by Anonymous | reply 382 | March 10, 2023 7:43 PM |

I think Heath Ledger only won that Oscar not because the performance was so amazing (he was good but anyone else could've done the same thing) but because the voters knew they had screwed him over for "Brokeback Mountain" the year before. It was nothing more than a makeup Oscar made even more urgent by the fact he died and that would be the last chance they'd ever have to make it up to him.

They headed back to their $1,800 a night hotel in the Golden Triangle section of Beverly Hills.
A source tells DailyMail.com, 'Just because you stay at a fancy hotel, it doesn't mean that they have everything you want to eat, especially when it comes to healthy items."
The mother-daughter duo first headed to the dairy section where Blanchett carefully read the labels on various yogurts.
Several times Blanchett appeared to get a bit of sticker shock herself, picking up items, checking the price and putting them down.
by Anonymous | reply 406 | March 11, 2023 1:36 AM |
Cate talks about Edith.
Blanchett gave birth to daughter Edith in 2015. And her three sons could not have been happier to have a little sister. “I find it EXTRAORDINARY, glimpsing them becoming a unit. And a very welcoming unit,” the proud mom of four told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2015. “I'm very proud of them.”
When lockdown measures saw parents trying to home school their kids, Blanchett found her daughter less than enthused about the process. So much so that she was forced to dress as her daughter’s teacher in order to get her to learn. “She wouldn’t start the classes until we had a full array of stuffed animals, all of which had the names of all the people in her class," she explained in 2021. “It felt like some weird kind of cross between The Muppets and MasterClass. It was quite traumatic actually.”
Fortunately for Blanchett, she’s got plenty of experience as both a mom and an actress under her belt. I’m sure it was the performance of a lifetime.

On Wednesday outside the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, workers unspooled a champagne-colored carpet as Jimmy Kimmel, who is hosting the 95th Oscars on Sunday, presided over the occasion.
“I think the decision to go with a champagne carpet over a red carpet shows how confident we are that no blood will be shed," Kimmel said.
The decision to change the color came from creative consultants Lisa Love, a longtime Vogue contributor, and Raúl Àvila, the creative director for the glamourous Met Gala in New York.

The same for her actor husband Colin Friels - very handsome when younger and while we all age, he seems to have taken it up a notch. Not any moisturiser in their bathroom cupboard!

I saw Tár last night. Cate is great, as expected. Very interesting role to follow Notes on a Scandal in her career.
I liked the movie overall.
For one thing, it's a movie-movie, the kind that would have been made in the 90s by Miramax. It felt both big-enough budget and thoughtful. I stopped paying any attention to movies because everything became Marvel/Disney/DC shit. This isn't that, and so it's a welcome film as far as I am concerned.
I was thrown by the ending but (SPOILER-ISH!!!!) I just read a review that suggests everything that happens after she falls in the ruined apartment complex may be imagined, and that the movie is ultimately a gothic horror and that does change things a lot. It changes some things for the better and some for the worse. If this was meant to be Cate's 'The Others,' it's not that.
It's still an interesting movie, and more than anything upon one view it's an interesting character study blended with consideration of what standards artists should be held to in the context of cancel culture.
If the best-actor categories go to actors for their performances alone, then I can't imagine many actresses outcompeted Cate this year.
If the acting categories consider writing, then perhaps she isn't a lock.
The Academy, like the Grammys/NARAS, is an industry association whose real interest is profits and celebrating profitable entertainment, and Tár is not a profitable movie, so I can imagine that costing her. At the same time, I can't imagine anyone involved in the production possibly expected a movie about a lesbian conductor of classical music whose name is (of all things!) TAR to break box-office records. That seems like a formula not to do well financially. Tar? Tar? It's not based on a real person. I cannot figure how they came up with tar.

[quote] No, JHud deserved that Oscar but she definitely deserved it for Elizabeth
[quote] It wasn't acting it was singing. And what 'acting' has she done since? Respect as Aretha?
What acting has J.K. Simmons done since winning his? A bunch of shitty insurance commercials.

While Blanchett was acting her ass off waiving her arms about, Yeoh was acting her ass off and kicking ass doing her own stunts.

R453 have you checked his IMDb? The man never stops working. And he was Oscar nominated again last year.

Cate Blanchett may have blown her Best Actress Oscar nomination

R456 Oh dear!
Poor thing.

All this talk I read online about how amazing Blanchett was in Tār and her performance was so *real* led me to believe that it was based on a true story. But she's totally fictional? I guess it easier to deem a performance "good" or "bad" if the actor is playing someone real and you get the sense that there's authenticity behind it. And you have the great (Streep as Julia Child) and the terrible (Streep as Margaret Thatcher).
So I'm not sure what the criteria are for a performance like Blanchett in Tār where a lot of folks say the story is problematic, but the performance was amazing. So she played her as unlikeable and complicated and that's enough to declare it amazing? Sounds like she could have played her any way she wanted to and people would have raved about it.
So for me, Michele Yeoh, who also played a completely fictitious character, did so in a way that seemed to resonate and touch more people. And that seems like a bigger accomplishment.
I'm not trying to over simplify what is and isn't a good performance, and I'm actually glad that almost all of the Actor nominations are for fictitious characters this year. The endless biopic Oscar bait movies are tedious.
It sounds like more people enjoyed Yeoh's performance than Blanchett's. 🤷🏻

by Anonymous | reply 459 | March 12, 2023 3:51 PM |
You're an idiot, no not for the stunt work, but it is just one part of her great multi layered performance. Now go sit down.

Cate is going to win. Sorry Kung fu fans
by Anonymous | reply 461 | March 12, 2023 4:32 PM |
I think Cate will win too but I want Michelle Yeoh. It's all ultimately subjective so why not give it to the underdog. Yeoh is still the underdog despite surging in the last month.
by Anonymous | reply 462 | March 12, 2023 4:38 PM |
Cate is not winning. How many times does this need to be explained?

A story planted BY Yeoh, FOR Yeoh.
That woman will stop at nothing.

She is? And what about me?

I just watched EEAAO last night for the first time and can understand why Yeoh is favored to win. The role has everything -- action/adventure plus all of the emotional drama with her husband and daughter -- and Yeoh handles it all beautifully. She would be a totally deserving winner in my opinion (though admit I have not seen any of the other nominees in order to make a fair comparison). I'm sure they're all great performances and the fact that this has turned somewhat ugly is both unfortunate and unnecessary.

[quote]So we should give an Oscar for stunt work now? Christ.
I don't know. Do they have a category for stunt doubles? If they did, they'd have to give it to a woman named Kiera O'Connor who was Yeoh's stunt double.
Because Michelle Yeoh isn't a stunt actor. Has zero stunt credits. Because she's an actress.

R458, "Oscar-bait" is one of those recent pejoratives, like "woke."
Movies have included "biopics" about real, actual, well-known or should be, PEOPLE since, well, movies.
Nobody ever termed a 20th-Century biopic "Oscar bait." Indeed, it wasn't a "biopic"; it was considered just a film, period, to be considered on its merits or demerits.
To say one is tired of, up to here with, bored silly with "biopics," because of course a synonym is "Oscar bait," is to declare, quite childishly, that one is---apologies to Dr. Samuel Johnson---tired of movies about real life.
Biographies, begone!

You have no idea what you’re talking about.
Bugsy, Nixon, and Chaplin were all high profile “Oscar bait” and were called such when they were released in the 99s.

You didn't even see Blanchett, but are just parroting what others on DL have said and trolling.

I saw Tar this morning. There was nothing special there until her concert breakdown which lasted a whole five minutes. Tar was a terrible person and Cate never made her likeable at all so when the shit hit the fan, who cares? People want to root for the heroine.
by Anonymous | reply 474 | March 12, 2023 9:58 PM |
I havent seen it yet but does she need to be likeable. Maybe to enjoy her downfall?

I have seen Tar as well. Not a Cate fan but I was more interested in the subject and watched it online. I have bought the DVD as a keeper. I think it is the only Cate DVD I own.

I didn't say she can't do stunts, I said she was not a stunt woman but an actress. And she had a stunt double for EEAAO. I'm not trying to take anything away from her, she's amazing, just tired of those claiming she's really just s lucky stunt woman. And Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie literally BRAG about doing their own stunts and have never been called lucky stunt actors.
And to all the "Cate will win with the superior performance" posters.
We've been trying to tell you for months. 🤷🏻
by Anonymous | reply 483 | March 13, 2023 3:57 AM |
Fine, r469; I yield.
It is still beyond stupid for one to use that term for the entire genre of movies about real people, be they entertainers, politicians, scientists, or televangelists.

[quote]Cate needs to bring g a bit of warmth and humanity to her acting so people can relate to the character. She is too technical.
The discussion of how cold and precise Cate's acting keeps making me think of Tilda Swinton. Tilda seems less warm and fuzzy in real life than Cate does, but she can play funny and dumb excellently. I've never seen Cate play a dumb, humorous character. Only stiff and serious.
I think that actually gave Michelle Yeoh the edge. She got to be silly and sad and funny and an action star all in one film.

They never were going to give a third to a pretentious Australian in a lesbian film.
