Michelle Yeoh posts and deletes article saying Cate Blanchett has won enough oscars
by Anonymous | reply 279 | March 15, 2023 7:58 PM |
She posted it just a couple hours before the voting closed, then deleted it when she realized it violated campaigning rules. Well, her social media person did, I doubt Michelle herself did that.
Also you can read articles that aren't on the Daily Mail, OP. It's true! Try it sometime!
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 8, 2023 11:23 AM |
So Cate can give all these crazy interviews where she's complaining about not being able to play lesbians anymore, but Michelle has to be a model minority for the duration of the Oscar campaign? Fuck that, she's right and should be free to say that without remorse.
One of them has two Oscars already and the other has none. That should absolutely be taken into account.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 8, 2023 11:27 AM |
It has nothing to do with Michelle thinking a win would send a message to girls like her, she just wants to win the damn thing. I respect people who are honest about their true motives and she is not.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 8, 2023 11:27 AM |
R2 I couldn't agree more.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 8, 2023 11:28 AM |
R2, are you being deliberately disingenuous? Michelle's comments bear directly on the awarding process and violated the rules. You can dislike Cate and disagree with comments she's made but all that is irrelevant to the Oscars and Michelle's impropriety here.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 8, 2023 11:30 AM |
bullshit r2. With that mindset why dont people say Serena Williams has won enough tennis awards and should stop competing? If minority actors haven't won Oscars it's not the fault of white people, it's because minority actors are not written complex parts and usually have to play 'role models' that reflects a positive image on their community. Writers of color are not willing to write roles for them which show human beings in all their messy dimensions, they have to write them are heroic and almost saint like. That's where political discourse has gotten us.

Call up Sigourney Weaver and give it to her. Was she in anything last year?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 8, 2023 11:33 AM |
OP posted this with a bunch of socks at the ready, I see. My favorite is the one at r3 who only likes international movie stars who are pure and true of heart.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 8, 2023 11:38 AM |
R8, the post at R3 didn't say that he only liked virtuous movie stars - his point was that they should be open about their personal ambitions instead of hiding behind "respectable" political positions.

Michelle Williams is overdue for an Oscar. How come no one is rooting for her to win
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 8, 2023 11:55 AM |
Met her once professionally, just before she became VERY famous, and have to say she was absolutely lovely as a person (surprisingly unassuming and serious about acting over celebrity). I would be rooting for her if she hadn't been nominated for such a steaming pile of shit as The Fabelmans. She's got a long career ahead of her and she'll have other opportunities.

You are clearly of the generation that got medals at school for attendance.
Awards are meant to be for being the best. Nobody ever said "Michael Phelps already has 50 gold medals: we should give the next few to the swimmer who comes second."

POC are always quick to talk about white mediocrity vs black excellence in music, but in movies, it has often been the POC who have been given mediocre stereotypical parts and white actors who have taken all the creative risks.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 8, 2023 12:28 PM |
Oh, shut up, you ignoramus at, r25.
This thread typical DL bigots gone wild.
And the punch-line is that, for years, if not since they were created (and created not to reward excellence, but as a Hollywood marketing tool for Mary Pickford and her husband what's his name?) the Oscars has been a promoting joke.
All the circus clowns vie for attention and grovel at Oscar time.
Why single Yeoh out for being upfront about it?
I've got my issues with both Brando and George C. Scott but they were right-on for refusing to take part in the circus.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 8, 2023 12:42 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 8, 2023 12:42 PM |
r26 I won't shut up because you're not willing to admit that. POC have been given shitty parts 90% of the time which don't merit awards notice. POC deserve the same opportunities in parts as white people and handing them awards for mediocrity is like giving an award to a kid in class who came second, simply for participating.

Yo, Yeoh! That's not cool, yo!
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 8, 2023 12:53 PM |
Should Michelle Yeoh, win because she's Asian or because she gave the best performance? Should she win just because Cate Blanchett has won 2 already? It should come down to performance. Michelle should just keep quiet.

You're being ridiculous r9 et al. when you act like Cate Blanchett is being open about what she wants but Michelle Yeoh isn't. How many times has Blanchett said she was going to retire?
Besides you're just assuming that Yeoh is lying when she says she thinks a win would be good for the Asian community. She can think that AND also just want to win a damn award. And there's nothing wrong with someone wanting to win a damn award!

[quote]Should Michelle Yeoh, win because she's Asian or because she gave the best performance? Should she win just because Cate Blanchett has won 2 already?
On one of the other threads about the Oscars, someone mentioned that way back in the 1930s, Bette Davis won as a consolation prize for having lost for OF HUMAN BONDAGE, then someone else mentioned Mary Pickford won before that as a career win, rather than for the movie she'd starred in.
I think it's safe to say that the Oscars have NEVER been about "the best performance." They're political, they're career wins, they're popularity contests, they're trying to make up for past wrongs, they're flukes sometimes because of weird vote splitting situations, but they're not about the best performance.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 8, 2023 1:40 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 60 | March 8, 2023 1:52 PM |
How embarrassing for her -- bad enough to lobby for the award, but worse to lobby against another to land it (and by an odd argument: "well, maybe her performance was good, even as good or better than mine, but she already has 2bawards and I have none, so there."
And worse still for putting the thing up and then retracting it after an afterthought or after a scold or scare re Academy rules.
She should hope for a well-intentioned but inexperienced PR intern to take aware her shame.

Andrea Riseborough barely got any pushback for testing Oscar campaigning rules, yet you want her to win over Yeoh?

Jamie Lee has a fine line to walk (as R40 and R89 have alluded to). She wants that Oscar for herself, obviously, and she's competing for it with a black woman and an Asian woman - and yet she knows that part of the momentum behind Michelle Yeoh is that Yeoh is Asian. Fortunately, Jamie Lee is totally unencumbered by self-awareness, so she will walk that line just fine.

The Cate Blanchett stans when Michelle Yeoh wins the Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | March 8, 2023 4:07 PM |
Michelle Yeoh is already rich, thin, pretty and famous. Giving her an Oscar will benefit her and her only, it will not lift up other Asian women. If she really wanted to set some kind of example for other “girls that look like [her],” she would leverage all the buzz/press she’s getting create opportunities for others or sell off one of her many homes and create a scholarship for Asian actors or some other fund to encourage screenplays about Asian people that go beyond the treacly immigrant tales of crazy rich Asians or EEAAO. Self-aggrandizement is not political activism.
The real problem is how atrociously written and poorly conceived the “article” she reposted is. The author’s contention that Yeoh winning the Oscar “should lead to meatier parts” is absurd; ask Mira Sorvino or Marisa Tomei how that worked out.
Her related contention that Yeoh has been “criminally underused in Hollywood” doesn’t mean she should get an Oscar. People act as if “Hollywood” were a centralized employer rather than a metonym for a largely unregulated industry run by several private companies. All actors are freelancers and there are way more actors than decent parts; the notion that one “deserves” to be cast in a film every year is absurd. There are plenty of white actresses who have had success in TV or film only to find themselves out of work for years afterward.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | March 8, 2023 4:07 PM |
I'd argue that Meryl was denied a win in years she was the best because The Academy had the view, oh she's won twice already and will be nominated again. I hope this kind of attitude doesn't impact Cate.

What I found sad about the article Yeoh shared is that it said something to the effect of, "Blanchett arguably gives the best performance in the category, but it would mean more to Yeoh's career and send a strong message if she won."
Despite Blanchett's mountain of prizes for the inane Tár, I don't think hers is some undeniable performance that could only possibly lose due to affirmative action. Her film is often described as a character study, but the character it's following isn't very interesting, and the film itself doesn't have much to say other than that, in a hierarchical structure, people on the top tend to abuse those they perceive as beneath them (hardly an original insight). She's such a strong threat to win because she is a prestige actress in an auteur film with weighty subject matter. Isabelle Huppert gave a more interesting performance as a not dissimilar character in the The Piano Teacher, over 20 years ago.
Yeoh is in the stressful position of being in a very tight race with someone who is likely to have many more Oscar opportunities in the future than she will, due to the way the industry is structured. I don't blame her for aggressively campaigning, even if this instagram post was ill-advised. And don't let Blanchett's speeches putting down awards season fool you -- she wants to win and is campaigning just as heavily in her own way.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | March 8, 2023 4:25 PM |
The Piano Teacher is not at all similar to TAR. The similarity is that they're both cold yet sexual women who play classical music. It ends there in terms of themes and plot.

Because of his personal narrative, not his performance. He’s selling the whole “I was a refugee turned child actor let down by Hollywood!” even though he went on to be a successful AD and stunt coordinator.
Meanwhile Barry Keoghan was raised poor in over a dozen foster homes as a kid, but he’s letting the work speak, not his own personal hard luck story.

Even though the supporting awards are going to go to an Asian man and a Black woman. It's never enough. Michelle should win it because she deserves it (she doesn't) not because she checks off a box. If this is how the Oscars are going to be from now on, just fucking cancel them. No one watches anymore anyway, and they mean nothing money-wise.

The desperation for awards IS sickening. It has gotten worse after a few years where it seemed to just be fun. Gaga is the thirstiest for award validation as well as her fans. But beyonce winning over 30 Grammys is outrageously sickening.
I want the best to win more than two Oscars. Meryl was robbed of more wins due to the notion she had won two times. I’d love to see someone win 5 or more acting Oscars. Fuck it.

Michelle Yeoh's behavior at the Golden Globes was appalling. Shrieking at the hard-working musicians told me everything about Yeoh. I was disappointed to see her behave so rudely to fellow artists. I stopped rooting for her.
That she would post something like this is not surprising. It is consistent with her character.
And it was just as rude when Julia Roberts did it during her Oscar win.

I think Michelle deserves the Oscar. So it doesn’t really matter what she posted or did not post. We can understand why it means so much to her given her age and length of participation in the industry. She was a trailblazer.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | March 8, 2023 11:15 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 158 | March 8, 2023 11:19 PM |
The fighting over awards is so tacky. No doubt minorities werent given them in the past for racist reasons and because there weren’t good roles for them. Saying someone has had enough so give it to me is tacky and gross. JFC.

R159 I know isn’t it ridiculous? If someone has “had enough” it probably is because they’re THAT good, and if they’re that good they probably deserved even more. Meryl probably should have at least 2 more.
My opinion but Meryl (and possibly Cate) aside - I think the most uphill battles are for white women over a certain age - who almost always lose to the hot young thing. Just look at the past 2-3 decades for proof.

by Anonymous | reply 165 | March 8, 2023 11:54 PM |
Don't be ridiculous, R161. The point of the controversy over Beyoncé and Harry Styles isn't just so that the perpetually outraged can express their displeasure at that particular decision, it's also their way of putting awards bodies on notice regarding future decisions: irrespective of merit, we do not want a white person to receive an award over a non-white person.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | March 8, 2023 11:56 PM |

R93, I said that about Yeoh and Blanchett meeting up on the red carpet without knowing (until your post) that Cate said she's had enough awards. I simply meant that it might be uncomfortable for both actresses to see each other on the red carpet after Yeoh's Instagram post which included remarks (complaints) about Blanchett possibly winning yet another Oscar.
Anyway, the rest of your post shouldn't be directed at me because I'd never before mentioned Michelle Yeoh, and I haven't seen her movie and therefore haven't commented on it. I've also never before mentioned Cate Blanchett, and I have no idea who Andrea Riseborough is. But, most importantly (and the only reason I'm writing this post), I'm not racist, which is what I'm guessing your last question is insinuating. Anyone who thinks Austin did a great job portraying Elvis should do themselves a favor and go find the 1979 TV movie bio-pic with Kurt Russell. It was made at 1/100th the cost (adjusting inflation) and Russell acts circles around Butler. Hell, even Bruce Campbell was a better fucking Elvis in the horror-comedy Bubba Ho-Tep. Christ. Who the hell is Butler fucking in Hollywood? He's like the male Gwyneth Paltrow.

You cannot say that because it's racist. But the anonymous Oscar voter basically stated this and then some.
It's hilarious that Davis' own pandering campaign for The Woman King ended in nothing but bitterness and a sore sport mentality for her. She had millions of dollars behind her, unlike Andrea. I don’t think Viola really cares as much as a lot of people make out. She was never going to win the lead actress award this year anyway. Then in February they threw her a Grammy award to complete her EGOT, making her the first black to win in competitive categories strictly for performance. Arguably, better than a second Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 235 | March 11, 2023 8:06 PM |
Viola (compared to her peers like Octavia Spencer and Alfre Woodward) is very one note and overrated. In that sense, she IS the black Meryl.
by Anonymous | reply 236 | March 11, 2023 8:21 PM |
Alfre should have had a much bigger career. So talented and versatile.
by Anonymous | reply 237 | March 11, 2023 9:31 PM |
Angela has been at this acting thing longer than Viola. She has missed opportunities for Oscar wins. Never heard her publicly complain unlike entitled Viola . Hope she wins tomorrow night
by Anonymous | reply 238 | March 11, 2023 9:34 PM |
R238 she’s only been nominated once before this year. Her film career with How Stella Got Her Groove Back peaked 25 years ago. Most of Angela’s prolific work has been on tv, where’s she’s been nominated for an Emmy nine times. She’s really overdue for an Emmy win, and not so much an Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 239 | March 11, 2023 9:47 PM |
Yeah, you could hardly characterize Angela Bassett as being overdue for an Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 240 | March 11, 2023 10:01 PM |
Cate Blanchett said in a recent podcast that the media " ain't gonna get a catfight " out of her against another nominee.
Hear that MY? it's called class

Here is Angela Bassett on how she felt about losing the Oscar for "What's Love Got to Do With It" 30 years ago. This woman is such a class act (and so gorgeous to boot). Go to 6:23 in the video:

It’s got to hurt Holly Hunter’s feelings that everyone is shitting on her winning that Oscar these days.
What’s crazy is she won EVERYTHING prior to the Oscar leading up to it, (Angela just won’t the GG for comedy actress) and yet now they say she was robbed.
by Anonymous | reply 243 | March 12, 2023 3:31 AM |
I doubt Holly is losing any sleep over it, R243. She still has the Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 244 | March 12, 2023 3:34 AM |
I also don’t think it’s unanimously considered Holly didn’t deserve that award. Maybe to people who haven’t seen The Piano it is, but…

OMG, one of my all time favorite actors. She's had tons of amazing performances and has a million awards and nominations but only one Oscar nomination. So many missed opportunities. Truly one of the most underrated actors ever.
by Anonymous | reply 246 | March 12, 2023 5:54 AM |
Yeah, I don't like this discourse that Holly is/was undeserving. At the time, Angela's nomination was her win, but she was not the front-runner that year. Holly was. And it remains a great performance. She's a four-time nominee, and was nominated twice the year she won.
by Anonymous | reply 247 | March 12, 2023 8:23 AM |
I couldn't agree more about Alfre Woodard, R246. She's always a joy to watch.

I don't think there is/was any such discourse, at least on a wide-ranging basis, that Angela was robbed. I only posted the video at R242 to show what a class act she is because she's never, at least to my knowledge, said anything over the years to disparage Holly Hunter or her win. But that said, so what if there are people out there who voice that opinion? Is Holly some delicate flower who should never be subjected to such discussion like so many other winners are? Yes, she was very good in "The Piano" but so was Angela in "What's Love Got to Do With It," both giving great performances in two entirely different films playing two entirely different people, so of course some opinions may lean one way vs. the other. And I don't care how many pre-awards Holly picked up that year, that doesn't mean she received across-the-board, unanimous support from every member of the Academy -- I'd be willing to bet every nominee that year had someone filling in the little dot for them because they genuinely thought that person was better than Hunter. That's just the way it works because people are people and not everyone sees everything the same way no matter how "amazing" the performance. And if this is really only about not wanting to "hurt" Holly's feelings (as R243 suggests), then we should stop and think the next time we trash the wins of Sandra Bullock, Halle Berry, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, Brie Larson, Jennifer Lawrence and even Meryl Streep since they've all been accused of Oscar theft in their day, though I'm sure like Hunter they all brush it off and keep on movin'.
by Anonymous | reply 249 | March 12, 2023 3:23 PM |
Angela's performance as Tina Turner was over the top and, I hate to say this, but a lot of black people constitute that as what good acting is, and subtlety less so. To them, Holly Hunter's silent movie performance deserves no praise because they can't really pick up subtle ways of expression. That's why black actors don't get offered subtle roles either, which is tragic, because it really isn't allowing them to grow as screen artists. Black artists have rightfully dominated music culture with their genius but it is white people who are superior actors by and large, with a much broader range.

R2 "One of them has two Oscars already and the other has none. That should absolutely be taken into account."
No, it shouldn't.
by Anonymous | reply 251 | March 12, 2023 3:35 PM |
So according to R250, Tom Cruise is a better actor than James Earl Jones. Got it.
by Anonymous | reply 252 | March 12, 2023 3:57 PM |
R252 Obviously that poster (while making a flawed argument) isn't saying that this applies to all cases, but on film, black actors usually are not rewarded for subtle or nuanced performances. Halle Berry in Monster's Ball? Really? Denzel Washington did all his best work before he was an Oscars darling.
Most truly great black actors (James Earl Jones being one) are mainly stars in theater or television or character actors. Cicely Tyson, despite her critical acclaim, was never a major star on the Angela Bassett level. Alfre Woodward is easily the best black actress of a certain age working but was only recognized once by the Academy, in 1983.
by Anonymous | reply 253 | March 12, 2023 4:17 PM |
R249 - Angela bad-mouthed Holly Hunter winning on the Andy Cohen Show.
by Anonymous | reply 254 | March 12, 2023 4:20 PM |
I would reverse that and say Bassett isn't a major star on Cicely Tyson's level. Tyson has played iconic roles and won a Tony in her 90s. Bassett is on a TV show and occasionally makes movies.
by Anonymous | reply 255 | March 12, 2023 4:23 PM |
Tyson has not played iconic roles. In fact, her only well known film (in which she figures into the cast in an important way) is Sounder. Her getting an Honorary Oscar a few years back was a huge joke. There were several other black actors who deserved an Honorary Oscar over her.
by Anonymous | reply 256 | March 12, 2023 4:33 PM |
There was a black actress on the soaps I loved in the 90s called Tonya Lee Williams who delivered beautifully subtle performances. I always hoped she'd make it to feature film but it wasn't to be. They ARE out there, but unfortunately it's the shouty theatrical types who usually get the fame.

R257- I enjoyed her as well- I especially loved that summer of 1990/1991 storyline when Drew came to town- It was just a really nice story- on a multitude of levels.

I suspect Keri Condon wins Supporting...
The tally probably went like this
Keri Angela JLC Chau and the chick from EEAAO who's name escapes me (i have not seen this film)
I think that there are some diehard Angela and JLC voters that are actually going to split the votes between those 2, and Keri is going to have enough 2's and 3's to sneak in..
There is no way in hell JLC gets this..
It will be like that Marcia Gay Harden win- the year that the chick from Almost Famous was the front runner..

R261 only the best pic vote is a weighted ballot. All other categories it’s the highest vote getter. But I catch your drift.
by Anonymous | reply 263 | March 12, 2023 7:01 PM |
R263- Is that true? I did not know that! I thought that they were all weighted...
Wow.
I still say that Condon takes it (same reason- split vote)
by Anonymous | reply 264 | March 12, 2023 7:08 PM |
Kerry would be a very deserving winner. Maybe Cate and Michelle will split the vote and let Andrea win ....
by Anonymous | reply 265 | March 12, 2023 7:46 PM |
R265 it would be great if Andrea could win, especially over Yeoh. But I don’t think enough voters outside the actors branch saw TL to make a difference. I’m still going on Blanchett to win.

My problem with Angela's performance in What's Love Got To Do With It is the physique she and the filmmakers chose. WTF was that? Tina Turner was not a bodybuilder. She had a strong body but those muscles were distracting. I don't understand why they chose to have Angela bulk up so much.
by Anonymous | reply 268 | March 12, 2023 8:56 PM |
People talk about Angela Bassett like she's Amy Adams or Glenn Close. She was only nominated once, she's not necessary overdue.

I remember an interview with Angela Bassett where they asked her about getting ready for the movie and she said (basically) Tina Turner's performance style was so energetic that she knew she had to get in shape if they were going to film her doing it for 10 hours and day and that, yeah, she knew she took it too far. She didn't intend to turn Tina Turner into a bodybuilder.

Ok. I was going to add something to my post at 277 and I spaced and W&W'd myself!!
I was going to add, part of it was the editing. They knew she had developed these huge biceps and triceps getting ready and they still included numerous shots where she does the sorta iconic Tina Turner move where she throws her arm up and points at the crowd. That's where it was really noticeable and they could have done something to minimize that. Fewer shots like that? Different camera angles?
