R600 (from the previous thread) - I don't necessarily agree that a 21-year-old dating a 17-year-old is a weirdo. If they were thirty, maybe. They're both of consenting age, and it's the same age gap as Kit and Maia. It all depends on the maturity of the people, really.

R19 I agree and throwing around words like groomer and talking about a 17 year old as if they are a child and below the age of consent is a dangerous trend that undermines the seriousness of grooming and abuse. I do not know what happened here and of course it is possible for any relationship if any age gap to be abusive but it feels like the old story of crying wolf at how lightly words like this are used in this fandom and have been misused to groundlessly attack specifically gay male cast members before as we have seen.

I do also agree that it is foolhardy to get involved with a teen you meet online in whatever circumstances. The backlash here was always inevitable whatever the rights and wrongs of what happened. We are after all talking about a group of people who consider it reasonable to describe Joe and Bash’s relationship as predatory because of an 18 month age gap. They are beyond reason in so many ways.

On a side note I also realised the person involved in this and who has now inevitably gone private was the one Bash quoted for his NY twitter post that now cannot be seen. Call me a cynic but this blowing up right after Bash posted that has the feel and timing of an act of spite and jealousy settling a personal grudge. Just an observation.

I wouldn't date someone under 18 if I were 21 but doesn't seem like it was anything serious or even romantic. It's not grooming anyway. Though I would not be surprised if the HS fandom is full of some weird shit considering how much older people interact with young teens all the time and hype them up and become friendly with them. The only place I talk about the show is on reddit or here so I am not fucking with any of that mess otherwise.

I don’t think it was grooming but I do think - and this isn’t meant to be unkind - from perusing the 17 year olds Twitter they don’t seem particularly mature, still live with their parents, etc so while I don’t care about a four year age gap I don’t think this is a case of an unusually mature teen. Either way though I kind of think if you’re going to be in a very very “woke” fanbase this type of thing is going to happen to you.

I am really not sure I am a better person for paying attention to Heartstopper twitter fans. I express a lot of contempt and some of them seem truly awful people but it is mostly just sad. I sincerely hope they are a small minority and not a reflection of a wider societal pattern because their nastiness seems to stem from them being so unhappy and unhealthy in themselves. It is exhausting to even observe god knows what it is like to live like that.

I’m a millennial & I find this whole GenZ idea of age gap relationships being disgusting really weird. There really isn’t much difference between an 18 year old & a early 20 year old. No-one would have batted an eyelid at say uni for first years to date 3rd years (so 18 & 20/21). Maybe a bit of maturity difference in some cases but often not! I had best mates/housemates ranging from 18-25 at uni, we were all extremely similar, doubt you could have told us apart in age really!

R43 I find the age gap nonsense bizarre too. The rule seems to be anyone who turns 20 and still harbours feelings for anyone still 19 let alone 17 or 18 is weird sick or a groomer. Any age gap of a year or more is abusive. It is beyond me and I cannot pin down where it comes from. They have a pack like victim mentality where everyone is a predator and sex is somehow always exploitative. Something has gone terribly wrong in their development and one of the most dangerous outcomes is it completely devalues genuine experiences of abuse and renders the terms meaningless.

It also needs to be said that I’ve seen them openly say the victim is always right. I support victims being listened to and believed but sometimes people lie or are too damaged to tell what truth is and that is why the rule of law and evidence exists. It seems they have discovered that labelling yourself a victim is armour and accusing someone of supporting abuse or being an abuser is the ultimate weapon. It is the mentality of a witch hunt where even questioning the rationale of what is happening gets you burnt at the stake.

They used it cruelly against both Bash and Joe and it is not the first time they have used it against each other. It is the ruthlessness with which they turn on people combined with the complete lack of self awareness that is frightening. They are insatiable and nasty bullies who move as a pack whilst believing they are the embodiment of virtue.

I say again I am glad Joe, Bash and Kit have largely removed themselves from it. I fear these damaged kids who do not seem to have anything beyond their online world have nowhere to go when they get hunted and seem oblivious of what they could be driving each other to

Thank you so much for your patience and support in 2022. It has been an incredibly exciting year for Heartstopper and therefore me personally. But it has also been the most mentally draining and exhausting year of my life. Writing season 2 in such a short timeframe was the hardest thing I have ever done in my career. I had to give up many things to do it, and I wanted to, and I feel very lucky that this is my life and my career, but it was not good for my health. I was not able to look after myself in any capacity; I had to give every ounce of my time and energy to these scripts or we would not have been able to shoot season 2 in 2022.

I know everyone's going on about 'burnout' these days but that's how I've been feeling for many years, and 2022 more than ever. I honestly feel like a shell of my former self. My mental health generally is bad and has been for a long time, and in 2022 my desire to be creative was the lowest it had ever been in my life.

But the season two shoot went really well. I am proud of my scripts, and the cast and crew worked incredibly hard. It was tough for everyone for various reasons, but everyone did such brilliant work, and I'm extremely grateful for how hard everyone worked despite the challenges they faced. Making TV is exhausting for everyone involved, but our cast and crew gave it their all.

I have to return to making the Heartstopper comic this month, or I will put myself in a very difficult position when writing the next season of the Heartstopper show. I need to have finished Vol 5 before I can start writing season 3, or else - because of when we have to shoot S3 - I will have to write the Heartstopper story for the show before I have written it for the comics, which is (in my mind) a nightmare scenario. So there is pressure there. Quite a lot of pressure. But I'm trying to take every day as it comes, making sure I'm looking after my physical and mental health while I have the time and energy to do so, and focusing on my own ideas and feelings. Being off social media is helping!

Her needing to have Vol 5 done before writing season 3 makes me think season 3 is going to wind up being the last season.

Ignoring the woe is me stuff, the only interesting thing in that whole update is “because of when we have to shoot S3” perhaps earlier in the year than when they started last year?

And yes, sounds like vol 5 is going to be in S3 then, unless S4 is potentially the novella but I can’t see that being stretched over a season

The number of people who now read Heartstopper is immense and the pressure and expectation that comes with that is extreme. It will be impossible to please everyone. There will be many people who will be unhappy with the routes I take the story, or feel that I could have done things differently and/or better. This is something I'm trying to find peace with, so that I can focus on rediscovering the original passion and love I had for the story when I began.

I suspect that’s probably referring to Ben and his storyline, judging by the reaction when they thought Bash suggested you might be able to see it from Ben’s point of view, anything less than Ben being burnt at the stake seems like it’s going to get the tweens mad.

I didn’t think it was about the Ben stuff because that specific bit is about the comic (which we already know is going to wind up deviating from the TV show when it comes to Ben) and he’s gone from the comic.

Ah missed the comic bit at the beginning, who knows then, could be anything.

Alice has talked about how shooting season 2 was ‘difficult for all involved, everyone faced challenges’ etc at least three times publicly now, and yet she never gives any specifics. Why even mention it then? She said on her Tumblr that she doesn’t want to taint the experience for viewers, but constantly mentioning it is giving a negative impression anyway, and making it sound like shooting season 2 wasn’t much fun for all involved.

I agree that it’s sounding like season 3 is the last season - I also got a vague impression from a few Joe and Kit interviews where they half talked as if season 3 was the last one (Kit joking about never working with Joe again after season 3 being one example). Maybe season 2 will cover volume 3 and half of volume 4, then season 3 will be half of volume 4 and the yet to be written volume 5.

Alice really didn’t write the season 2 scripts in a really short timeframe. She was writing them for months and months, based on what she said, and they’re short episodes based on an existing graphic novel.

I get the feeling Netflix would have been happy to bring in other writers so a lot of Alice’s stress is because she wanted to micromanage The process. I’m laughing a bit at “everyone says they’re burned out but I actually am”. Hope she’s ok but given how shit things have Been for Joe, Kit, and Bash this season her complaining is extremely annoying.

Why doesn’t she just get some help with writing them? There are experts whose job it is to write scripts. I’m sure some would let her have reasonable creative control but just take away a large volume of the work! She’s just being a martyr for no reason.

I get the impression Alice underestimated Netflix and it’s demands of a successful TV show in terms of timeframes & work expected of her. She couldn’t just potter with the script as she feels like as she does with the books/comic. Taking breaks when she can’t cope with life. They would have said we need the next series out in 12 months. Pretty standard for a lower budget TV series. You don’t wana wait too long between seasons, you need to capitalise on its success.

No offense but her writing is shit. She got lucky with the actors. She should focus on writing the comic and let the actual screenwriters write the show script when the time comes.

I don't think her writing is shit, but it isn't extremely high quality - certainly not enough to justify her clinging to full control of writing everything, whilst also saying how exhausted and overworked she is.

I feel like a smarter move from her would be to allow a writer’s room but demand an editorial eye / final say in particular things. Alas

I had a feeling season 2 would go until the “I love you” part of book 4 at the very least. In one of the recent interviews Kit and Joe have kinda avoided saying Charlie and Nick are in love in season 1. Which made me think that the verbal confirmation of their love is a big plot point in season 2. I am excited for season 2 however, I am glad they will wrap it up in 3 seasons. Ending on a high note is so much better than ragging things along. And let’s be honest, there is not a whole lot of content to cover. It’s a cute coming of age love story it’s not that deep.

R100 to be fair, it being the second time it was said made it even more cringe and less compelling. They both did their best but even their chemistry and cuteness in the show did not made it a good line.

I’d guess S2 ends with a semi optimistic note: they’ll move the “I love you” and have it happen before Charlie goes to inpatient care, and then S3 starts with him coming home, some flashbacks, his improvements, them being intimate and Nick applying to uni, a less dumb version of the “Nick and Charlie” fight, and making up. The time skip (even of just s few weeks) that the mental hospital would allow would be a good between season transition.

Obviously there's a lot of stuff that only works because of Kit and Joe, but the clearest example of it (to me) is the corridor scene. Nick's monologue is absolutely cringe-worthy on paper and it's a miracle that wound up being one of the best scenes.

Kit talking recently about Nick and Charlie being less 'cute and shy' in season 2, and more comfortable with each other, makes me a bit hopeful that there'll be more authentic flirty and jokey moments and less of the ultra cheesy stuff that no one actually says in real life. I love their quieter intimate moments - one of my favourites is when they're doing homework on the floor and Charlie is just staring at Nick. And most of the conversation by the claw machine is lovely.

I just hope 'why are we like this?' is fully dropped.

Although to add to my R118 above, Alice's 'humorous' writing definitely isn't her strong point - some of the banter from season 1 was really weak, especially in the first episode. Joe and Kit have more natural comedy banter in real life, so I hope the writing improves enough to take advantage of that.

This is why she should get some help writing the bloody scripts! Not only will she not have a monthly breakdown, the dialogue will be much snappier!

Less cute would be nice. Some of the flirty scenes could be nice in theory, but Alice portrays the characters so childishly sometimes it ruins it. The Nick speaking French scene and Charlie blushing over it started out well and then ends up a giggling mess.

R118 It seems like she at least knows that people want more affection between them. Between her likes and how Kit and Joe have spoken about their dynamic next season I'm expecting that to come to fruition.

On top of obviously wanting her to take advantage of the natural comedic timing they both have, if Netflix is going to campaign the show as a comedy for awards it would make more sense for it to...be more comedic. And the next season is going to need those lighter moments to balance out Charlie's storyline.

I'm not sure he'd have the self-confidence in his singing to audition, though - he does have a good voice but I'm not sure it's leading man in a musical level? I would love to see Kit as a singing Hercules as well. Andrew Garfield had no training prior to Tick Tick Boom and pulled it off beautifully, at least Kit has some foundation from Rocketman and what seems to be some natural talent.

He’s a decent enough singer for Disney - Emma Watson was Belle and she can hold a tune but was hardly a powerhouse. I think they’ll likely try to land strong singers for something like a Frozen where Elsa is meant to belt, but Kit would be fine voice wise as Hercules. Kit in Hercules would be the same as Joe in Marvel for me in that it would never be my first choice for them as a next career move (I think they deserve better material) but would be huge opportunities regardless. It harkens to what someone on here said a couple of days ago about actors in that age range not having a ton of opportunities, but in terms of their profiles a Disney project is a no-brainer (just not creatively).

I just rewatched Heartstopper and I agree with people here about some majorly cringe lines. Particularly "Why are we like this?" (Joe's delivery is WAY more cringe) also, while I love the corridor scene at the end, the dialog is full cheese but I cringe so hard at Joe's delivery of "Nick. I believe you. I believe you."

Despite all of that. The kissing scenes were great. They felt innocent and authentic and what you would expect from 2 young kids discovering their first love. It wasn't just closed lip smashing and having their hands and faces covering up everything. Their intimacy coordinator did a great job.

That last kiss in the corridor though. Kit really went all in- not to say Joe didn't but all of the emotion and energy is coming from Kit..(which makes sense script wise since Nick is scared to lose Charlie).. that was an epic kiss for just a kid show.

I hope the intimacy scenes for season 2 are a little more along the lines of "2 teenage boys who can't keep their hands off each other" and a little more intense. Otherwise it'll seem unrealistic, imo.

The supporting cast certainly isn’t bad and are at least on par with if not better than most teen shows, but considering how cheesy and light much of the script is, Joe and Kit did a lot of heavy lifting. I think they’re both extremely good nonverbal actors and hope Alice lets that be shown next season (Joe in Charlie’s mental health scenes and Kit in the scenes with Nick’s brother) since frankly it’s better than a lot of her writing. It’s an indie movie, the platform was never a given. The producers have sold other movies to Netflix, and Kit has built in fans on Netflix, so Netflix is a likely buyer. But it’s definitely not a given. I agree with R238 that TBA doesn’t mean unknown, just unannounced.

Random interjection, but I'm rewatching Heartstopper, and I actually think one of the best scenes for Joe/Kit chemistry is in episode 2 where they're playing video games ('you're a proper little nerd'). R267 There's no way of knowing because the information on Hulkling's first appearance keeps changing. People thought it would be in Secret Invasion, then in Agatha, and the most recent thing a leaker had heard was that there was no definitive answer regarding Hulkling in Agatha.

Hulkling is definitely coming with the Young Avengers, it’s just a matter of when a first appearance will happen.

R315 This kind of thing doesn't seem as jarring to someone who has started following production after Joe was cast, but the project was originally announced for a 2023 release and was supposed to shoot earlier. So contracts, filming schedules, etc. have already been altered prior to this but are unlikely to be altered going forward now that we're a week out from principal photography. That being said, this is going to be one of the largest gaps from shoot to release that Marvel's had with these shows (probably only second to Echo), so it's still unusual in that regard.

Wandavision could have used some more time in post production. The last couple episodes were pretty bad looking. Hopefully the time helps so things can look their best.

This is an interview he did for a school thing with Manx Radio and he sounds southern in this. As it's before he became famous and a local radio station I would imagine this is his normal accent. We don't know why he lives on The Isle of Man or how long his family have been based there. It is a tax haven so long term its a good move in many ways with his earnings potential.

It really could go either way. Joe's going to wind up doing bigger conventions but that may be a while away with the release delays, Kit is still a bit of a question mark, and they both still seem humble enough that they might do a smaller con. I don't think the main issue is shipper fan girls? There are always real person shippers for every single show, but I haven't seen tons for Joe and Kit. Lots of people love their friendship (me included) but aren't convinced they're together or harassing their actual partners with stuff like 'break up with him and get with Kit' (which you do see in some other fandoms). To be clear I don’t think that’s Kit’s fault - I think all of them including Joe and Bash want to avoid drama, and probably just downplay it as much as possible. Joe can’t help but make little gestures like the Tweet likes back in October of the pink news block more recently because bash is his boyfriend, he loves him a shit ton, and he knows more than anyone how much shit he gets. But so long as Kit doesn’t ever show public support for them (which again; not s blame thing) and his support is only private / in the form of continued friendship, they can pretend he would agree with them. R593 to get clear I agree, I think the cast overall staying out of it is best as they’re all SO young and it’s the fastest way for thinfs to blow over. Little things like Kizzy and Yaz liking Bash’s apology aside as an example, most of the time it would just pull more into the gray.
