Suspect Arrested in Idaho murders: 25-year-old man arrested in Pennsylvania

A 25-year-old man was arrested Friday morning in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains in connection with the murders of four University of Idaho students, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

Sources said that authorities knew who they were looking for and had tracked the man down to Pennsylvania.

A SWAT team entered the location where he was staying in order to take him into custody Friday. The suspect appeared before a judge Friday morning.

Moscow police officers, members of Idaho State Police, Moscow city leaders and University of Idaho officials will hold a news conference at 1 p.m. local time Friday.

It's been over six weeks since roommates Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen and Xana Kernodle, as well as Kernodle's boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, were all stabbed to death in the girls' off-campus house in the early hours of Nov. 13.

Two other roommates -- who police said are not suspects -- survived and likely slept through the murders, according to officials. The survivors were on the ground floor while the four victims were on the second and third floors.

Police have been urging the public to come forward with information.

It's been weeks since police and city officials have gathered for a news conference, choosing instead to release small updates through social media. This new announcement comes as University of Idaho students are away from campus for winter break.

BTW, IMHO, most Ph.D. students are a little bananas when doing their research. I should know -- I was one of them (poli sci). But instead of completely losing my marbles, I left my program after doing my comps.

Most times, I'm certain that was the right choice.

Ted Bundt always had the warmest, most open hole. And soooo moist!

by Anonymousreply 25December 30, 2022 10:15 PM

The fact that he was a criminology student reminds me of Stephen Griffiths aka the 'Crossbow killer' who killed three women with a crossbow. He had a PhD in homicide studies. He was completely obsessed with serial killers and had tons of books on them. It makes you wonder how many people doing these courses are into it themselves.

by Anonymousreply 26December 30, 2022 10:25 PM

An 80's slasher villain, to be sure. He posted on reddit about wanting to interview other criminals for his research. It would be chilling if he met other killers like himself online.

by Anonymousreply 27December 30, 2022 10:27 PM

No, r20, I take the Bundy comparison as based on temperament, education, and class. This guy is quite similar to Bundy in those respects.

by Anonymousreply 28December 30, 2022 10:28 PM

Does that mean the father of Kaylee will stop publicly telling the police on how to do their job now?

by Anonymousreply 36December 31, 2022 12:17 AM

by Anonymousreply 38December 31, 2022 12:28 AM

Also, per R23, the idea that a Ted Bundt invented bundt cakes is a very funny result of this typo.

By day I was a patissier. Popular and handsome, I was respected by my peers for my spotless mis en place, flaky choux pastry and to-die-for piping. But by night, the urges slowly overtook me. I tried so hard to resist. In the witching hour I'd surf Goldbelly, design elaborate souffles....but it was no use. I had *needs*. Under cover of darkness, I was reborn, a hunter. Once I found a gas station, it was over. Famous Amos, Hot Pockets, an off brand cherry danish. In the spree NO ONE was safe. Sometimes I'd eat half a Ho-Ho then bury it in the back of the pantry only to 'visit' with it later. I have no explanation for my actions. I know they were unnatural. But I kept getting away with it! Though in the end, I got sloppy. A routine traffic stop was my undoing- when the cop found thirty two Little Debbie Snack Cake wrappers in the backseat.

by Anonymousreply 77December 31, 2022 7:24 AM

Interesting that he went to Idaho to kill, which does have the death penalty, and not stay in Washington state, where he went to school, and it does not have the death penalty. Though maybe he was aware that, "Under the Biden administration, the federal government has had a standing moratorium on death sentences since July 1, 2021."

by Anonymousreply 78December 31, 2022 7:29 AM

This "scholar" probably thought he was too smart to get caught and was likely going to "interview" himself as one of the criminals he hoped to study and profile in his graduate dissertation. The scary thing is he likely did this all ( in his mind) as part of his PhD "research" and saw it all as part of his "work." He would likely write extensively about this killer/killing in his dissertation while attempting to hide that it was him. That's why he was advertising online for criminals to share their stories with him and promising to keep their communications secure and their identities private. This was a cover so he could tell his own story and claim that the killer had contacted him and this would make this dissertation a success and publishable. Pure evil, very academic.

[R75] Ha! Along with Betty Crocker in the trunk no doubt!

by Anonymousreply 80December 31, 2022 7:47 AM

Some parallels:

Ted Bundy had a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Washington (honor student).

The BTK killer graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Administration of Justice at Wichita State University.

Not as pertinent but the Unabomber had a Ph.D. in mathematics and was a professor at UC Berkeley.

Bundy also worked at Seattle's Suicide Hotline Crisis Center. There, he met and worked alongside Ann Rule, a former Seattle police officer and aspiring crime writer who would later write one of the definitive Bundy biographies, The Stranger Beside Me. Rule saw nothing disturbing in Bundy's personality at the time; she described him as "kind, solicitous, and empathetic.

by Anonymousreply 89December 31, 2022 11:55 AM

R89 he left when he got tired or scared of getting caught

by Anonymousreply 90December 31, 2022 12:43 PM

How could four people not overpower this guy? Were they drunk and passed out? He killed them with a knife, not a gun.

by Anonymousreply 91December 31, 2022 1:07 PM

R91 they were all drunk, asleep/in bed. The three women are trivial, even an out of shape male could in most circumstances easily overpower almost any woman. The difference in physical strength (and capability to make explosive movements) between the average man and woman is enormous - like the US women’s soccer team got blown out practicing against a JV high school boys team. Ethan was the only threat and he was drunk, Bryan appears to be more athletic than the average American guy and had the advantage of attacking a surprised and drunk and possibly sleeping Ethan in the dark. This is why stuff like women’s self defense courses drive me crazy, there’s no such thing, women absolutely need to be armed or good at running to have a shot against a male attacker in 99/100 cases.

[quote] Idaho suspect Bryan Kohberger turned ‘aggressive’ in high school: former friend

The criminology doctoral student suspected of murdering four University of Idaho students transformed into an aggressive and violent bully at the end of high school, a former friend claims.

Nick Mcloughlin, of Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania, told the Daily Beast he was appalled when he learned his high school buddy Bryan Christopher Kohberger was arrested Friday in connection to the brutal November slayings.

The two had been friends during their teenage years, Mcloughlin said. They spent half their days at Pleasant Valley High and the other half taking heating and air conditioning work classes at Monroe County’s vocational school.

But the relationship dissolved after Mcloughlin said Kohberger underwent a personality shift over the course of a summer.

Mcloughlin said Kohberger, 28, had been a “down to earth” and overweight teen when they wrapped up their junior year. When they started their senior year, Kohberger was “thinner than a rail” and developed an “aggressive” personality.

Kohberger also began picking up boxing lessons and was itching to put his new skills to use, according to his former friend.

“He always wanted to fight somebody, he was bullying people. We started cutting him off from our friend group because he was 100 percent a different person,” Mcloughlin said, adding that the personality switch came as a total surprise and mystery to the friends.

Mcloughlin did not immediately respond to requests for comment by The Post.

After graduating from Pleasant Valley High School, Kohberger went on to earn a psychology degree from Northampton Community College in 2018, the school told The Daily Beast.

Kohberger continued to work in the Pleasant Valley School District for several years as a school security officer, but left the job last year.

He then received a master of arts in criminal justice from DeSales University in 2022.

While a student at the school, Kohberger posted a Reddit solicitation for former prisoners to take part in his research survey about “how emotions and psychological traits influence decision-making when committing a crime.,” where he questioned how the criminals approached their victims and whether they prepared for the crime.

Kohberger had been pursuing a doctorate in criminal justice at Washington State University in Pullman, less than 10 miles from Moscow, when he allegedly murdered students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin on Nov. 13.

Kohberger’s DNA has reportedly been matched to samples recovered at the scene of the crimes.

"Interesting that he went to Idaho to kill, which does have the death penalty, and not stay in Washington state, where he went to school, and it does not have the death penalty."

I doubt killers have such concerns. I just can't see it going through their mind. Especially a guy like this who probably was convinced he was smart enough to get a way with it.

Also, Pullman, WA (where Washington State is located) and Moscow, ID (where U Idaho is located) - is essentially a small metro area. Maybe not totally filled in between the cities, but a lot of back and forth. So if you live there, it's probably just becomes normal and unremarkable that you're going in and out of multiple states.

by Anonymousreply 109December 31, 2022 4:30 PM

The 'death penalty' is a bit of a joke anyway. Typically people just spend years on death row. And in the end, I think I would rather go out than rot in prison.

BCK = Bundt Cake Killer

by Anonymousreply 111December 31, 2022 4:40 PM

So I’ve been pretty hung up on the theory that these murders happened as a result of an attempted robbery. I’ve been on that train pretty much for the last 3-4 weeks.

Why?

Because it makes very little sense to me, that someone entered that home, for the purpose of slaughtering 4 people, just because.

I also believed that it was most definitely some frat boys, or a friend of the frat boys, or even the boyfriends or friends of the two surviving roommates on the first floor.

I was obviously very wrong about whom I suspected, and in my defense, I at one time went online and wrote that I suspected the Jack S. guy. However, as the case progressed or more accurately, appeared to be stuck, I stopped theorizing on who did this, and I focused on the house, its location, the surrounding area, the backyard, the way it looks from the outside, specifically in the evenings, when lights are on, and the fact that all of the tenants in the home were young women.

The more I thought about the house, the more I kept going back to the singular idea that someone REALLY wanted something in that house, and it was NOT any of the tenants living there at the time the crime took place, nor was it Ethan, or even the adorable labradoodle.

What did someone want? Money, or something worth some money, or multiple things worth money, or a combination of all of the above.

When I first heard of this man’s arrest, & info started circulating about him, I basically doubled down, because I believe this guy was out to burglarize this home, and probably other homes, as well as attempting to rifle through cars that hadn’t been properly locked, so he could perhaps score a wallet or some cash or whatever.

So here’s my question:

Why the fuck is no one discussing the arrest warrant served with a batter-ram, and a SWAT team, on this fucker, In Pennsylvania?

READ THE WARRANT!

1) 4 counts of 1st degree murder.

2) 1 count of FELONY ROBBERY.

I’m sticking to my theory. Robbery gone bad. VERY bad, and here we are.

Wouldn’t that be a burglary charge under Idaho statute?

[quote] He was a fat loser in a vocational programs in high school and then got hooked on speed and Ritalin.

That was my first thought, except I was thinking METH. But then again, meth and Adderall are essentially the same thing.

It would explain the weight loss and the personality change.

My nephew started taking Adderall and became a totally different person.

He claims that it made him "super focused," but what he didn't see was how he started to become a totay psycho, never stopped talking, and would not sleep. Instead, he was digging ditches in his back yard at 3 am.

It was fucking scary.

R123 That makes a lot more sense than the stupid 'he was vegan!' theory being pushed in another thread.

by Anonymousreply 125December 31, 2022 5:45 PM

I haven't been following this story very closely. Do we know anything about the condition of the bodies when they were found?

This case reminds me a bit of the murders at the University of Florida in 1990.

by Anonymousreply 126December 31, 2022 5:48 PM

They were tore up so bad the cops thought a bear did it.

by Anonymousreply 127December 31, 2022 5:53 PM

The killer is no bear.

Twink, or twunk, maybe, but definitely not a bear.

Nancy is somewhere with the twins on a leash R116 she is unbothered.

by Anonymousreply 132December 31, 2022 6:02 PM

I really thought the killer would turn out to be a middle-aged guy with a family like BTK or the Delphi murderer, just because it had the earmarks of a thrill killing with sexual overtones, and looked to be someone with experience with slaughtering animals. I would have never guessed “vegan criminology student researching for his doctorate.” It’s straight out of a Thomas Harris novel!

by Anonymousreply 145December 31, 2022 8:10 PM

R112. You’re wrong on the felony robbery—your CBS link says 4 counts of murder and 4 counts of felony BURGLARY. Burglary is a different crime from robbery. Burglary refers to ENTERING a building with intent to commit a felony therein (in this case, intending to commit the murders).

Robbery is usually defined as a taking from the person by force or fear (like a mugging). Don’t believe robbery would have been chargeable on what we know of these facts.

by Anonymousreply 146December 31, 2022 8:26 PM

R136 the affect on the user is completely different. meth heads act in a distinct way from other stimulant abusers. i've been around many and am related to many.

by Anonymousreply 147December 31, 2022 8:35 PM

R146 - R112 posted the same post about ROBBERY in the other thread. People chimed in and gently explained the difference. Hopefully R112 has more peace of mind, now.

by Anonymousreply 148December 31, 2022 8:44 PM

He wouldn't make it through all the diplomas as a Meth head. Ritalin & Adderall are amphetamines of course. Methamphetamine has a slightly different structure. They have a lot of similar effects but there are differences. Street meth varies in quality. Prescription drugs are "quality" with reliable dosage. Also Adderall can be time released.

by Anonymousreply 149December 31, 2022 9:09 PM

Thank you R149. Finally somebody who knows what they're talking about on this topic. Methamphetamine is about the worst drug to be addicted to. It has a relapse rate of 89%. Adderall is kids stuff compared to real meth, it's only the uninformed idiots in this thread saying they are the same.

by Anonymousreply 150December 31, 2022 9:41 PM

One report I read claimed he hadm ade homophobic comments. Of course he’s turn out to be a repressed, self-hating right wing fag.

by Anonymousreply 151December 31, 2022 9:53 PM

Adderall and vyvanse poppers just become manic, chatty, irritable, and highly productive. It feels (to me) like taking weak coke that lasts forever. Meth users spiral out completely into near schizophrenia. Delusions, disorganized thought patterns, incoherent speech, extreme paranoia, picking at the skin, it's a completely different animal.

R151 I figured they were referencing his comment about Bieber somehow making non-binary identities trendy to kids

by Anonymousreply 152December 31, 2022 9:57 PM

"I’m sticking to my theory. Robbery gone bad. VERY bad, and here we are.'"

Again, what did any of these kids have worth stealing? As far as we know the only thing of value that any of them possessed was a 7 year old pickup truck, which Kaylee proudly brought over to show her friends, which does rather imply that they would be impressed by a used car. And yes, some people think that there was drug dealing going on in that house, but if someone there was dealing drugs why didn't they have anything to show for it? Why couldn't the dealer afford her own place, instead of crowding in with a bunch of other girls?

No, this crime was motivated by rage. There was nothing to be gained in that house, except whatever pleasure this guy gained from killing.

by Anonymousreply 153December 31, 2022 10:12 PM

Do you think Brian Kohberger bragged about having the inside scoop while out on dates?

by Anonymousreply 154December 31, 2022 10:16 PM

He looks like Adam Lanza here.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 155December 31, 2022 10:17 PM

And R112, if the killer was motivated by the need to steal money and/or drugs, didn't an alleged drug dealer live a few houses away, that Harsh guy? Wouldn't entering the home of one guy have been easier and more profitable, than entering a house full of people?

Seriously, if robbery was the motive the sensible thing to do would be to wait until the house was EMPTY, instead of breaking in when six people were present, and bringing a gun instead of a knife. And if the housemates were dealing drugs, why the hell were they working waiting tables at restaurants? No, this was a crime mostly or wholly motivated by rage, rage directed and Maddie and/or Kaylee. The motive was to kill them gruesomely and personally, and to get away, and it's a damn shame that Xana and Ethan were in the killer's way as he exited the 3rd floor. No, this was the work of an rageaholic psycho, who hadn't planned on meeting anyone while exiting the crime scene.

by Anonymousreply 156December 31, 2022 11:29 PM

Robbery wasn't the motive no matter how Adderal he sniffed. He wanted to kill. And be smart enough to get away with it. He wasn't.

Idaho Murders Suspect Made One Huge Mistake, Expert Says

When police on Friday arrested quadruple murder suspect Bryan Christopher Kohberger, his post-graduate-level studies in criminology quickly became a subject of intense focus.

But while one ex-cop and criminology professor who writes textbooks on how to conduct criminal investigations says it’s not inconceivable a student could use that knowledge for the wrong reasons, it’s also exceedingly rare.

“Someone asked, ‘Are you worried about making better criminals?’” Prof. Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD detective sergeant who now teaches at New York City’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice, told The Daily Beast. “It’s always a concern, you always have that in the back of your mind. But [Kohberger] is behind bars right now. So, maybe he wasn’t as good a student as everybody thought.”

Investigators believe Kohberger, 28, was responsible for the grisly slayings of University of Idaho undergrads Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, both 21, and Xana Kernodle and her boyfriend Ethan Chapin, who were both 20. The four were stabbed to death in the early morning hours of Nov. 13, as they slept in their off-campus rental home in the small farming community of Moscow, according to authorities. It remains unclear how, or if, Kohberger knew any of the victims.

Steve Goncalves, Goncalves’ father, told ABC News after Kohberger’s arrest that neither he, nor anyone else in the family knew Kohberger. But he noted that after learning the suspect’s identity, they have started to see connections between Kohberger and Goncalves, though they couldn’t discuss them yet.

A lawyer for Kohberger on Saturday said he “is eager to be exonerated” and “looks forward to resolving these matters as soon as possible.”

A first-year Ph.D. student and teaching assistant at Washington State University in Pullman, about 10 miles from the crime scene, Kohberger completed a graduate program in criminal justice earlier this year at DeSales University, a Catholic institution in Center Valley, Pennsylvania. There, he took classes with noted forensic psychologist Katherine Ramsland, who has authored nearly 70 books including such titles as How to Catch a Killer, The Psychology of Death Investigations, and The Mind of a Murderer. (Reached on Friday by The Daily Beast, Ramsland declined to comment on Kohberger’s arrest.)

Giacalone said he could personally recall only one other murder investigation in recent years in which a criminology student turned out to be the prime suspect.

In 2010, John Jay College criminology student Gary McGurk pleaded guilty to manslaughter for tying his girlfriend to a bed and slashing her throat, then bashing her head in with a hammer—but not before wrapping her skull in Saran Wrap “so there would be no blood,” the 24-year-old said in court. The 24-year-old victim Michelle Lee, who had also gone to John Jay, was working as a criminologist for the NYPD at the time of her death.

In May, while still at DeSales, Kohberger put out a call online for ex-offenders to take part in a research project, according to the now-deleted post. He said he wanted to know about people’s “most recent criminal offense,” and, among other things, their “thoughts and feelings throughout [the] experience.” Kohberger also told potential participants he was interested in “how emotions and psychological traits influence decision-making when committing a crime,” how they prepared for their crimes, and how a person approached their target before “making your move.”

DNA evidence found at the murder scene was a crucial factor in tracking down Kohberger, who was found holed up at his parents’ home in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, a law enforcement source told the Associated Press. Detectives fed the genetic material found at the home into a public database, which turned up potential family matches, helping police to zero in on Kohberger, according to a source cited by CNN.

by Anonymousreply 159January 1, 2023 1:36 AM

Investigators also mounted a nationwide search for a white Hyundai Elantra spotted near the victims’ house around the time of the murders, and compiled a list of 22,000 possible matches—finally narrowing it down to Kohberger’s vehicle. He had driven it all the way back from the Pacific Northwest to his parents’ place near the Poconos, where cops got a bead on him “[s]ometime right before Christmas,” a separate source told CNN.

“If somebody like this was really a student of criminal justice and criminology, then he would understand certain things like Locard’s Exchange Principle,” Giacalone told The Daily Beast, referring to the time-tested forensic theory that “every contact leaves a trace.”

“It shows you the arrogance of people like him, where he thinks he’s smarter than the cops because he read something in a book,” Giacalone continued. “At the end of the day, experience trumps academics every day of the week and twice on Sunday.”

Numerous questions still hang over the case, which authorities say will begin to be answered once Kohberger is extradited back to Idaho and arraigned in court.

“It will be really interesting to find out, as we go, if he came prepared,” said Giacalone. “Did he wear gloves, a Tyvek suit, what was he doing to not get caught? Was he covering his hair? Did he wear booties over his shoes, knowing that he’s going to be stepping in a lot of blood? Those are behavioral aspects, where [prosecutors] can say, ‘This was well thought-out and planned.”

Police have not yet recovered the murder weapon, which they described as a “fixed-blade knife.” Cops also continue to ask the public for any information they might have about Kohberger, whose former classmates described him to The Daily Beast on Friday as a “very intelligent” amateur boxer who could be “detached” but also “aggressive.”

Kohberger had a job as a part-time school security guard for the Pleasant Valley School District until last year, according to reports.

During his junior year in high school, Kohberger got teased for being overweight, one acquaintance said, recalling that Kohberger showed up the following year “thinner than a rail” and looking for a fight. The former friend, 26-year-old Nick Mcloughlin, said he was at a loss to explain why Kohberger had become, in his words, “100 percent a different person.”

These sorts of details are not only of interest to “true crime” buffs but will also be vitally important to investigators and prosecutors, according to Giacalone, who spent more than 20 years in various positions with the NYPD, including a stint as commanding officer of the Bronx Cold Case Squad.

“I’d want to know what he was like during Thanksgiving weekend, was he sketchy, was he withdrawn, did he spend time in his room?” Giacalone said. “Is he normally outgoing, but he didn’t want to be bothered by anybody when he came home? It’s not necessarily evidence of a crime, but it’s information that helps them support their case.”

Although the families of the Idaho victims say they are heartened by Kohberger’s capture, the case against him “doesn’t end with [the] arrest,” Giacalone emphasized.

“You have to follow this thing through to the prosecution,” he said. “Maybe someone saw him with a knife at some point, maybe family and friends saw a change in him, maybe there was an unexplained injury that now makes more sense. All these things need to be looked into, to make the case better.”

Kohberger is under 24-hour suicide watch in a Pennsylvania jail as he awaits extradition to Idaho. Once Kohberger is back in Idaho, the father of one of his alleged victims hopes to see him in court.

“This guy’s gonna have to look me in my eyes multiple times, and I’m going to be looking for the truth,” Steve Goncalves told ABC News on Friday night. “That’s really what I’m going to be looking for.”

by Anonymousreply 160January 1, 2023 1:37 AM

I'm just wondering how Jimmy is doing.

Attractive and popular is so subjective, R165. The victims, (the two blondes, anyway) were so basic. In just about any other place they'd be nothing special. Imagine Kaylee at an Ivy?? If this loser thought he was so superior, why'd he even bother with the likes of these corn-fed students?

R166 the guys on 4chan (typical straight males) are super horny for kaylee

by Anonymousreply 173January 1, 2023 1:50 PM

Yeah I don't need to watch the video, unless he was doing speedballs or something, heavy on the speed, he was not a fucking heroin user. Heroin users spend a lot of time puking and nodding off and not committing heinous murders except the murders or their souls to buy more h.

by Anonymousreply 174January 1, 2023 1:51 PM

R172 if you have conscious intentions to carry out murder, the use of sedatives or downers isn't unusual. For an experienced/regular user the drug would either just bring them back to a sense of normalcy (withdrawal avoidance) or reduce stress/avoid adrenaline dumping during the act. I think Paddock loaded up on benzos if I recall.

by Anonymousreply 175January 1, 2023 1:53 PM

Herion also kills your libido, no one on heroin is lusting after some insta chicks and stalking them.

by Anonymousreply 176January 1, 2023 1:58 PM

R173, kaylee looked chunky to me, with a FUPA. I think Madison is the more attractive one.

by Anonymousreply 177January 1, 2023 2:14 PM

Shit, I meant heroin, not herion. Anyhow, being someone who has actually done heroin, many years ago, I can tell you that I and the people I hung out with spent a lot of time falling asleep and throwing up. I definitely was not thinking of getting laid and scoping out the honeys.

by Anonymousreply 178January 1, 2023 2:15 PM

R177 Me too! And Xana was better looking than either of the blondes and had a better body.

by Anonymousreply 182January 1, 2023 7:47 PM

There’s something very compelling about close friends like Madison and Kaylee. That they chose each other and valued one another so highly and were so committed makes them both seem more attractive in my opinion.

by Anonymousreply 183January 1, 2023 7:52 PM

[quote] Bryan Kohberger's Family Breaks Silence After His Arrest

Bryan Christopher Kohberger's family is speaking out following his arrest.

On Jan. 1, two days after the 28-year-old Washington State University graduate student was taken into custody in connection with the University of Idaho killings, his parents, Michael and Marianne Kohberger, as well as his sister, Amanda, shared a message to the public.

"First and foremost, we care deeply for the four families who have lost their precious children," the family's statement, shared by Bryan's counsel Jason A. LaBar and obtained by E! News, began. "There are no words that can adequately express the sadness we feel, and we pray each day for them. We will continue to let the legal process unfold and as a family we will love and support our son and brother."

"We have fully cooperated with law enforcement agencies in an attempt to seek the truth and promote his presumption of innocence rather than judge unknown facts and make erroneous assumptions," the statement concluded. "We respect privacy in this matter as our family and the families suffering loss can move forward through the legal process."

On Dec. 30, Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson announced that Bryan was arrested in his home state of Pennsylvania and charged with four counts of first-degree murder and a felony burglary charge in connection with the fatal Nov. 13 stabbings of University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin.

According to NBC News, however, Bryan's counsel stated in a Dec. 31 interview that the 28-year-old is "eager to be exonerated" in the case, noting that he is "very aware, but calm, and really shocked by his arrest."

No additional information regarding Bryan's connection to the four students has been released at this time.

I'm still wondering about the DNA evidence that led police to BCK. I thought I heard on the news that it was a familial DNA match that led them to BCK. Does anyone here know anything about that?

by Anonymousreply 212January 3, 2023 3:22 PM

No, but I would guess it's going to wind up being that someone in his family did one of those ancestry DNA tests or was previously arrested and submitted DNA.

by Anonymousreply 213January 3, 2023 3:29 PM

R213 That's kind of the impression that I got and I fucking love it! That motherfucker probably didn't really care about leaving dna behind because he knew he was not on a database, I guess he's not as clever as he thought.

by Anonymousreply 214January 3, 2023 3:37 PM

At this point in time, we are ALL in a DNA database because our dizzy relatives have all contributed.

I refuse to do so because I have enough to worry about without finding out my dad is the Zodiac killer.

by Anonymousreply 215January 3, 2023 4:03 PM

Old boy sets out to prove he can commit the perfect crime.

He takes his phone with him while stalking his victims. He takes his phone to the massacre. He drives his own car to the massacre. He leaves DNA all over the place.

Do I have that right?

[quote]At approximately 10:41 a.m. on Dec. 15, a Hancock County Sheriff's deputy pulled over Kohberger's Hyundai just east of the rest park near the 107-mile marker for following too closely.

[quote]Bryan Kohlberger was driving and the sheriff's department said the deputy released him with a verbal warning. The department is not releasing the body-worn camera because "the video is part of the active criminal investigation in Idaho."

[quote]Then, at approximately 10:50 a.m., an Indiana State Police trooper stopped a white Hyundai Elantra on I-70 in Hancock County, Indiana for following too closely.

[quote]ISP said Kohberger was driving at the time and another man, believed to be Kohberger's father, was also in the car.

[quote]According to Kohberger's extradition lawyer, Jason LaBar, Kohberger's dad had flown into Seattle, to Spokane and then drove into Pullman to get his son and drive back to Pennsylvania during the holiday. by Anonymousreply 268January 4, 2023 6:53 AM

I still don't get why the Dad drove all that way just to drive back with the freak? Why? Could the son not be trusted to drive alone? Were they planning on doing something to the car? Was it a suicide mission?

by Anonymousreply 269January 4, 2023 7:16 AM

And what was the deal with all the tailgating? It seems he treated other drivers just like he treated the women he attempted to pursue--aggressively, no matter what. He would have his way or they would be sorry. He needs to fry like Bundy.

by Anonymousreply 270January 4, 2023 7:19 AM

R269 That didn’t seem so unusual to me, when I was in college my best friend went to a school much farther away from our hometown than the rest of us and for breaks where she needed to have her car or her pet with her her mom would fly out to her so they could split the long drive between them. She would also go back with her and fly back once they got to her school.

by Anonymousreply 271January 4, 2023 7:28 AM

R271 But she's a girl, I can see why someone wouldn't want their young daughter driving alone, because of motherfuckers like this. Why does Bry need mossy teeth to drive with him? by Anonymousreply 272January 4, 2023 2:21 PM

R272 It wasn’t a gender thing, it was a distance and money thing. It wound up being cheaper to fly out to my friend and take turns driving than for my friend to stop at hotels on her way down. It also meant losing less days from her breaks to travel, they made it back much quicker taking turns.

by Anonymousreply 277January 4, 2023 5:53 PM

Why did Bryan need his car for winter break?

That’s the only reason I can think of for him to be driving back to PA.

Unless he was, you know, getting rid of evidence.

by Anonymousreply 278January 4, 2023 6:04 PM

Bryan was a grad student and teaching assistant. So, his winter break is going to be shorter than some random undergrad’s break.

It’s weird he would need his car for a short break. In other words, he was relocating the car for other reasons.

Also, the cop during that traffic stop sure was asking a lot of bizarre questions. He had to have known Bryan was a suspect for the Idaho murders.

by Anonymousreply 279January 4, 2023 6:11 PM

It is weird. The cost of wear and tear on the car over 5,000 miles round-trip, combined with gas prices, make no sense economically compared to flying. Add to that the cost of his Dad flying across the country first.

by Anonymousreply 280January 4, 2023 7:08 PM

Yeah, that's a lot of wear and tear on the car, especially with two people switching off driving. In winter, I guess it's not that bad on the car (engine gets cooling from the outside), but in summer, bad for the car, probably.

by Anonymousreply 281January 4, 2023 7:11 PM

I'm thinking Father Tarter had to suspect something. Assuming they (the parents) had been hearing the news reports of the case, and they knew police were looking for a white Elantra, and his weirdo son had just applied for Washington State plates, but then decides to drive the car 2,000 miles home (and back- or get another vehicle), he had to have had some suspicion.

[quote] Bryan Kohberger makes tasteless joke in Pennsylvania prison

Idaho murder suspect Bryan Kohberger made a tasteless joke while locked up in a Pennsylvania prison for five days, according to a new report.

A source inside the Monroe County Correctional Facility told NewsNation that the accused mass murderer was asked why he killed four college students in Moscow, Idaho. "I didn't do anything," he allegedly shot back.

When the 28-year-old Ph.D. student was asked why he had been in Moscow – an eight-mile drive from his apartment in Pullman, Washington – he allegedly retorted, "The shopping is better in Idaho."

Kohberger spent five days locked up at the Stroudsburg prison after his arrest Friday at his parents' home in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, on charges he knifed Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen and Xana Kernodle to death on Nov. 13 in a rented home near campus.

Kohberger was outfitted with a suicide vest and housed in a cell with a glass door that offered little privacy, according to the report.

Another inmate allegedly threatened the life of the high-profile jailer, who had been studying criminology at Washington State University.

"F--- you, I'm going to kill you," seethed the unnamed inmate as he allegedly flashed Kohberger his middle finger, NewsNation reported.

The source added that Kohberger's request for vegan meals at the facility was granted. He dined on peanut butter and jelly, apple sauce, vegetables, beans, rice, cereal and maybe some potatoes, according to the news site.

The source described Kohberger as "creepy" and said he got a shower every day, but he had to wear a suicide smock in his cell.

Kohberger waived extradition Tuesday in the Monroe County Courthouse and was flown to Pullman, Washington, the next day in a Pennsylvania State Police Pilatus PC-12 single-engine turbo-prop plane, flight records show.

He's due to go before a judge Thursday morning in Latah County Court to face four charges of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary.

The probable cause affidavit outlining the details of the alleged knife-wielding rampage against the four University of Idaho students will be released Thursday, officials said.

Moscow police have not disclosed a motive or recovered the fixed-blade knife they believe Kohberger used in the horrific attack.

The taxes are lower there, so he may not have been joking about the shopping

by Anonymousreply 297January 5, 2023 11:09 PM

How is that a tasteless joke?

Someone asked him why he did, he responded he didn’t; they then asked why he was in the state and he said the shopping is better there. That’s a tasteless joke?

Also, DL grammarians: They refer to him as the “jailer,” as opposed to “jailed” or “prisoner.” That doesn’t sound right.

by Anonymousreply 298January 5, 2023 11:43 PM

Why are there not very far short of about 49 individual news articles about just this one same story in every social media outlet’s daily news posts???!

by Anonymousreply 299January 5, 2023 11:48 PM

Yeah, that's clickbait. Not a tasteless joke. Some states have no sales tax.

by Anonymousreply 300January 6, 2023 12:47 AM

It's not a tasteless joke. As others have said, some states have lower or no sales tax. Some people will cross into neighboring states to get to certain chain stores that aren't available in their states of residences.

There's sometimes a bunch of other reasons why people frequently cross states like work, education, doctor's appointments, concerts/entertainment etc. In many areas, people wouldn't bat an eye at others crossing state lines frequently. Once in awhile you'll find someone who is oblivious/or a moron about things like that. I lived in Albuquerque for several years which is in the center of New Mexico. I came across some people who had always lived there and had rarely or never visited other parts of the state. At one point, I worked for a healthcare system that operates several hospitals and clinics around the state. It was an HR related job and part of it had deal with onboarding new employees for their benefits packages. There were some employees from out of state that would commute daily to work in clinics in regions near state lines or there were employees whose main residences were in neighboring states, but they would come during their work weeks and stay here and then go back home on their days off.

Part of the process when I talked to new employees was to ask if they were full time state residents. I had several incidents of people usually in the Santa Fe/Albuquerque areas who would get pissy whenever I asked the state residency question. They usually thought the question was stupid and would make comments about " wouldn't you expect that everyone working in this healthcare system would be a full time NM resident". Even when I explained about the out of state commuters, they would still be pissy about the state residency question. Those incidents just showed me how ignorant people can be when it came to the subject of commuting from the other states.

by Anonymousreply 301January 6, 2023 4:36 PM

Yeah that's not tasteless at all a tasteless joke would have been like if they said what were you doing in Idaho and he said your mom.

by Anonymousreply 302January 6, 2023 4:43 PM

He had probably going into Idaho often to stake out sites for victims for awhile. I wonder if he was inspired to target college students by the Gainsville Ripper case.

by Anonymousreply 304January 6, 2023 11:59 PM

I wonder if he killed anyone when back in PA, his home state. And how high his sense of homicidal ideation was there. I'd like to know if he moved to ID to get away from his murderous fantasies, or if he moved there to more easily fulfill them, since he maybe felt he couldn't so close to home.

I bet the idea of moving totally cross-country, to a completely new environment full of strangers appealed to him. All the better to find victims for his murder spree/s - no one his friend, or potential friend of a friend or family member.

I'm not sure Bryan would be able to handle a cross-country flight without having some kind of event or meltdown. He seems afflicted with something.

He may have also had a temper tantrum because he wanted to drive and so his dad indulged him, but also knew that he'd need someone with him to manage the small stuff, so he flew out to try to take care of him.

R312 maybe they were just close and long drives or road trips was a father-son thing for them, or they enjoy driving. a lot of people hate driving and only see it as a chore but for many others it's practically a hobby. there are whole communities of driving nerds who just upload video after video of them driving different routes with a dashcam on and they have audiences. there's a huge scope of not weird explanations for that. if bryan had been moody and spergy his whole life his parents may have been quite doting and went out of their way to keep him company in general.

I haven't been keeping up, and I still assumed they had been sleeping when murdered.

What really happened?

^ Just guessing: the element of surprise and big knife.

R323 when he’s walking next to the cops BK looks like a big athletic guy definitely more imposing than Ethan to me, 28 is a man’s physical prime too, Ethan drunk/sleepy/asleep

Some hybristiphiliac frau made a subreddit to talk to herself about her crush on Bryan. I was wondering when I’d see stuff like this, the music in the edits made me bust out laughing.

R148, I do have more peace of mind now! At least I did, until the power outage we experienced here in LaLa Land a bit ago. Los Angeles was completely DARK for about 2-3 minutes. It was actually kinda cool.

Thanks again to anyone who explained the differences of these charges to me.

OK. Back to bed.

[quote] Woman says she had a Tinder date with the Idaho-killings suspect in 2015 where he said she had 'birthing hips' and insisted on coming to her room

A woman says she went on a Tinder date with Idaho-killings suspect in 2015 where he complimented her "birthing hips" and insisted on coming into her room.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, published Tuesday, Hayley Willette, 26, said while she was still in college, she went on a date with Bryan Kohberger — the Pennsylvania native who is accused of killing four University of Idaho students in November.

The pair had matched on Tinder and went to the movies together, she said. After Kohberger drove her back to her dorm room at Penn State Hazleton, Willette said he "started being really pushy about coming" up with her to watch another movie, The Beast reported.

When she agreed, and the two went to her room to pick out another movie, she said she started to feel uneasy.

While Kohberger "was very polite and nice" during the date, she said, he "completely changed gears" when they were in her room.

"He just seemed very different," she told The Beast. "Definitely felt uncomfortable when he decided he needed to wait outside of the bathroom for me."

Willette said that while in she was in the bathroom, she pretended to "loudly throw up" before Kohberger left.

"After an hour or so of him being gone, he messaged me and said I had good birthing hips and I just never messaged back," she added.

The pair never spoke again, she said, adding that she remembered the date only after she saw his mug shot in the news recently.

"As soon as I saw his mug shot, I knew. He just has an unforgettable face," Willette said.

Kohberger was arrested earlier this month on first-degree murder charges in the deaths of four University of Idaho students and one count of burglary.

Ethan Chapin, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, were found dead in their home nearly two months ago.

Kohberger has a history of lashing out at women, reported NBC News, and often acted "creepy" toward women and that female employees and customers in a brewery he often frequented.

According to the owner of the brewery, Jordan Serulneck, the suspect would ask women where they lived and whom they were there with, then would get angry when they did not respond.

Some people were trying to claim this guy was gay. Nope. Just a gross incel asshole

by Anonymousreply 330January 11, 2023 6:44 PM

Everything about him screams "straight Incel", so WTF is up with people trying to claim he's gay?

Are they just trying to "other" him, or smear gays? Or do they look at his lack of relationships with women, without understanding what an incel is?

[quote] Bryan Kohberger beguiled medical staff 4 days after quadruple killing in Idaho: 'He's so charming'

Four days after four University of Idaho students were brutally killed, college students there and at nearby Washington State University were so scared of the killer on the loose that they stayed inside, canceled appointments, and even left town.

Bryan Kohberger, though, not only made it to his routine medical appointment in Pullman, Washington, but also beguiled the staff there, a receptionist at the office told Insider.

On November 17, Kohberger arrived at his appointment in a black North Face jacket and was so friendly with staff members that they took notice.

The receptionist at the office, who declined to give her name because discussing the interaction might violate medical privacy laws, said Kohberger's behavior prompted her boss to comment.

"'She said, 'He's so nice and charming' — she never says that about anybody," the receptionist told Insider. "I was like, 'Yeah, he really was.'"

He scheduled an ordinary follow-up appointment for the spring semester.

Prosecutors say that Kohberger — a 28-year-old studying for his doctorate in criminology at WSU — stabbed the 21-year-olds Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves and the 20-year-olds Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle at their off-campus housing in Moscow, Idaho on November 13.

After a manhunt that dragged on for over a month, Police arrested Kohberger at his parents' home in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania.

He was extradited to Idaho where he is now held without bail and awaiting trial. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Wouldn’t that make sense, though r332? He's just pulled off what his fucked-up psyche was wanting to do—he wd've been filled with the satisfaction and joy that murderous psychopaths need, so of course he's going to be charming to the little medical staff people.

These little office workers and doctors have no idea who I am and what I’ve just done. Duper's delight, and all that.

When I was a grad student in my 20s, getting regular checkups was the last thing on my mind. So he has one immediately after the crime and then "scheduled an ordinary follow-up appointment for the spring semester."

Was he a hypochondriac? Had some kind of chronic illness that had to be monitored? Or just conscientious (about his OWN health)?
