How incompetent must the NY Dems be if they didn't do their research on this fraud?
Progressive critics of the state and local Democratic Party have argued that the party’s failure to uncover the vast majority of these questions about Santos’ biography in either of his two congressional races — he also ran in 2020 — demonstrates that the party establishment is incompetent and should be replaced.
“No press release from the Zimmerman campaign, the state Democratic Party or the DCCC referenced the bulk of the Times reporting,” noted City & State’s Rebecca Lewis.
“They were too busy sending out one anti-Zeldin mailer and finding out how to run phonebanks! Poor [New York Democratic Party Chair] Jay Jacobs was overwhelmed,” tweeted political consultant Bill Neidhardt.
“As an NY-3 constituent, not a single ad, mailer, or canvasser communicated these details to voters,” tweeted former New York City Council candidate Jaslin Kaur.

Someone posted on the earlier thread that the DEMS did indeed do the opposition research, but the media didn't pick it up. I don't know... I'm not out to blame the Dems but I do feel that someone needs to answer some questions. On another note, I think that the police and/or FBI need to be investigating all of the money Santos has and where it originated from.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 28, 2022 4:16 PM |
At this point, he should be afforded no privacy. They should root through all his books, bills, income, whatever. He's a proven liar and needs to be completely exposed.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 28, 2022 4:34 PM |
If the Dems had reported something like this, especially in this era of Trump, you'd better believe the media would pick it up. Big time. But then, blaming the media is always a good fall back to cover for incompetence.

From the first thread:
[quote] "He's an embarrassment to the Republican Party."
Impossible. They have absolutely no shame and cannot be embarrassed. The bottom line is, they don’t care. Oh, if it had been a Democrat, then they’d be screaming bloody murder. But one of their own, eh. 🤷♂️ They are despicable.

EVERYTHING IS WRONG. Who IS this guy?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 28, 2022 8:42 PM |
The only conspiracy theory that I can think of R25 is that the Democrats knew about this information and decided at some point to sit on it and calculate that this information would come out and blow up in the faces of Santos but more specifically the Republicans. But that wouldn't make sense. The Democrats were very close to maintaining the House. All hands and resources should have been used to fight for the House. While the Democrats not losing nearly as bad as thought was historical, had they maintained the House would have been HISTORICAL!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 28, 2022 8:55 PM |
Dems didn't think New Yorkers would vote for Republicans, so they got cocky and didn't do their research.

Here's how I'd push this or how I wish someone would push it;
Santos is a con man, period. He knew that his scheme would never work among the Democrats, but Republicans are so stupid and filled with hate and evil, that they were simply just easy marks to pull this all off. It pretty much worked. There are other examples too. Kari Lake, Herschell Walker, etc.

Given that Santos was married to her from 2012 to 2019, he must have spent about a year as father or stepfather to this kid.

Is George Santos a citizen?
We don’t know. He has claimed that he was born in Brazil and that he was born in New York. If Santos was not born in America, it might explain one of the mysteries of his biography.
Santos is a gay man who says he came out in his teens.
But he was married to a woman for a number of years.
his is not unheard of. Lots of gay people spend time in heterosexual marriages. But it is also not unheard of for non-citizens to get into sham marriages to get citizenship. The first is legal, the second is not.
Is that what Santos did? We don’t know, but we would be idiots to give Santos the benefit of the doubt on anything.
If Santos got citizenship through a sham marriage, his citizenship would automatically be revoked and his election to Congress would be null and void. He would also be deported.

Many of them have faced brutal cuts or have been put out of business) - or Dems who would need a lot of money to be able to publicize it even if they conducted a investigation.
The NYTimes has the money to investigate but as a national newspaper naturally they're not going to be investigating every candidate for hundreds of seats.

Claimed he criticized Goldman Sachs at private equity conference as an employee
“Have you ever heard of a Goldman Sachs employee take the stage at the largest private equity conference in the world – SALT, run by Anthony Scaramucci – and berate their employer? Well, I did that,” Santos said on a local podcast this summer. “And I did it in the fashion of renewable energy and global warming. This was the panel I was on. And they’re all talking about solar, wind, and this was back, what, seven years ago now? And I said, you know what, this is a scam. It’s taxpayer money that gets subsidized.”
The claim is entirely fictional, according to both Goldman Sachs – which has said Santos never worked there – and Scaramucci, who runs the conference.
Scaramucci told CNN in a message there is not only no record of him appearing on a panel, but no record of him even attending the conference.

[quote]As of now, only Democrats are calling for Santos to resign from the post that was considered a longshot win for Republicans in the first place. And the GOP — both locally and in the House — is unlikely to call for him to step down in the thin majority. But one Republican familiar with the discussions said Santos has told New York party leaders that he won’t seek reelection after this term. If he doesn’t make that statement openly soon, the Republican said, he risks those leaders publicly pulling support.

Not in two years from now. In no other place would you get two more years on the job after your lies have been discovered.
His lying is pathological. It seems as if there have been dozens more discovered every day since the NYT first decided to finally cover his lies and falsehoods. There is no redemption from this. The House should refuse to seat him. That will happen only if there are four Repukes willing to join with the Dems to refuse to seat this lying fraud.

"Three months ago, Rep.-elect George Santos and his sister, Tiffany Lee Devolder Santos, packed their bags and left their two-year Queens rental in a bad state, The Post can report.
The landlord and building owner of 151-47 12th Ave. in Whitestone told The Post the two always paid their rent on time, but left the place in ruins.
“They had four dogs and they did a lot of damage to the place, so they left,” Nancy Pothos said.
The modest abode measures 960 square feet. It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Photos obtained by The Post show the residence as anything but the lavish lifestyle that Santos, who was elected last month to represent New York’s 3rd congressional district, described having.
The fridge in the kitchen blocks the door so that you can only enter and exit through a slight opening. And the appliances appear to be quite dated."

"During his campaign, Santos spent $30,000 on hotels, $40,000 on airfare and $14,000 on car services. For comparison, Nick LaLota, another representative-elect from NY, spent roughly $900 on hotel stays, $3,000 on airfare and $900 on taxi services."
NYTimes
[quote] Late Thursday, Joe Murray, a lawyer for Mr. Santos, said in a statement that there had been some money spent “unwisely” by a firm that had been fired by the campaign more than a year earlier, but he said that all expenditures were legal. The payments to Cleaner 123 were for legitimate expenses on behalf of staffers relocating to the district, he said, as were hotels booked to lodge staff members and people assisting the campaign.
re: R570 in the previous thread
[quote] Mr. Santos’s campaign filings show other irregularities as well: He had listed a flood of expenses under $200 — more than 800 items in total — a number that far exceeded those of candidates for similar office. More than 30 of those payments came in just below the limit at $199.99, expenses listed for office supplies, restaurants and Ubers, among other things. While F.E.C. rules urge candidates to try to save receipts for purchases below $200, they are required to keep them for all expenditures above that threshold.
[quote] Paul S. Ryan, an election law expert, said that the expenditures could be an effort to hide illegal use of campaign funds, given the leeway with reporting receipts below $200. If so, he said, Mr. Santos’s attempt to hide the pattern could put him in further legal trouble, adding: “I consider deployment of this tactic strong evidence that the violation of law was knowing and willful — and therefore meeting the requirement for criminal prosecution.”

The trouble with these weird grifters like Santos is that they get so much inordinate attention from the press when they're exposed, and they don't deserve it. He strikes me as a fundamentally uninteresting person who lied mostly to make himself interesting.
If the Republicans would just denounce him and distance themselves from him this story would go away, but they're so stubborn they refuse to do so, and this story as a result keeps having legs.

His constituents aren’t typical MAGATs. They are people happy to pay $30,000 and up per year in property taxes to send their kids to the best private schools in the country. And they are humiliated by this and they will be coming for vengeance. And Kevin McCarthy telling them he’s been laughing at them is not smart. You do not mess with the Sands Point crowd without winding up in a world of hurt. There’s a reason the local Long Island Republicans are going after him.

Of course not. Why must it be all or nothing? I’m saying IN ADDITION to his attendance there his other improprieties and lies should’ve been drilled into people’s heads. The party made the insurrection the SOLE focus constantly.

From what I have read and heard, they have to keep voting until someone is voted to become Speaker. There is even a very long shot that House could even fall back into the hands of the House and Hakeem Jeffries. That's more like an impossibility than a long shot. Republicans will definitely never let that happen.

Joe Biden should call his good buddy Lula in Brazil and have him issue a formal request for extradition, since he supposedly is still wanted there for check fraud.
Then, right before he's about to be sworn into Congress, with the whole world watching, he's arrested and taken into custody...and never becomes a U.S. congressman.
(I don't know all the legal ins and outs of something like this...truth be told, I doubt they would extradite a U.S. citizen for a $700 petty crime...but I can dream, can't I?)

[quote] The next step for Brazilian prosecutors is to file a petition when the courts reopen at the end of the week requesting that Mr. Santos respond to the charges against him. A judge would then share the request, called a rogatory letter, with the federal Justice Ministry in Brazil, which would share it with the U.S. Department of Justice. Neither the Justice Department nor Brazilian authorities can compel Mr. Santos to respond at this point. But Mr. Santos must be officially notified in order for the case to proceed.
[quote] A criminal conviction, even for a felony, is not on its own an act that would disqualify a congressional member from holding office. The last time a member of Congress was removed from office for breaking the law was in 2002, when James A. Traficant Jr. was removed from the House after his conviction on felony racketeering and corruption charges.

by Anonymous | reply 423 | January 3, 2023 1:04 AM |
There are actually four investigations: one from the Nassau County DA, one from the Queens County DA, one from the NY AG, Tish James, and one from the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
The investigations provide the GQP with some measure of cover because the Repukes can claim that they are waiting for the results before they take any action. Purely a stalling tactic. And by pushing that “we have to wait” nonsense, they can try and deflect the calls by the Dems to toss out Santos now. But, that also gives McCarthy one more vote that he desperately needs during the current election for Speaker. They all likely assume that Santos is toast and won’t serve out his full term. They’ll get whatever votes they can out of him, realizing that, in the wake of all this, the seat will probably flip back to the Dems.

From r439’s article:
[quote]The U.S. has an extradition treaty with Brazil. But it was not clear that the American authorities would grant any potential extradition request.
[quote]To secure his extradition, the Brazilian government would need to show the charges are punishable by more than a year in prison in both countries, said Jacques Semmelman, an extradition specialist and former federal prosecutor.
[quote]“In addition, the government of Brazil would have to demonstrate that the statute of limitations for the offense has not expired either under Brazilian law or U.S. law,” Semmelman said. “It remains to be seen if Brazil will be able to make the requisite showings.”

His lies are too great to ignore and his constituents, especially the ones who voted for him, are seething. There's no end game for him except going away, it's just a matter of how he chooses to do that. Either a bang or a whimper, those are his only remaining options.
Of course his legal problems are mounting, so we won't see the last of him for a while. But he can't sustain this congressional seat for himself. There's too many people working against him and no one working for him.

Exactly what R519 says.
by Anonymous | reply 525 | January 9, 2023 2:17 PM |
I hope so but I'll believe it when I see it. The main thing seems to be about finding the true source of the $705,000 in contributions to Santos's campaign (no, I don't believe it was Santos's own money). If that was a corporation or foreign national, both are categorically barred from contributing to federal candidates.
Usually these people are smart about how they go about it and recruit a regular citizen to make such donations or payments - so it depends on how well they can investigate the money trail.
by Anonymous | reply 526 | January 9, 2023 2:55 PM |
Well, R526, there are currently 4 different investigations of Santos, so I would believe it. This arrogant fool is going to be fucked hard, because it's pretty obvious his financial contributions are illegitimate. You don't go from being unable to pay rent and making $55k a year to paying yourself over $700k to your own political campaign a year later.
by Anonymous | reply 527 | January 9, 2023 3:01 PM |
Sounds like they can definitely fuck him hard on campaign finance violations.

Perhaps I should have specified "fuck him hard but not in a good way".
by Anonymous | reply 531 | January 9, 2023 4:06 PM |
I don't think it's been mentioned but another big red flag is Santos's sister. She is reportedly facing eviction failing to pay nearly $40,000 in rent since August 2020 despite receiving $30,000 in federal emergency rental assistance, paid directly to her landlords.
And yet in the time that rent wasn’t being paid, Tiffany Santos gave $5,000 to her brother’s congressional campaign in December 2021 and more than $16,000 to other GOP candidates in December 2021 and June 2022, Federal Election Commission records show.
So where is that money coming from. Who is giving that money to Tiffany Santos to donate to candidates? Because I find it hard to believe she gave it out of her own volition when she wasn't paying her rent. That doesn't make a lot of sense.
by Anonymous | reply 532 | January 9, 2023 5:25 PM |
R532, good point
by Anonymous | reply 533 | January 9, 2023 5:58 PM |
Yes, but it also makes it hard to prove. How do you prove that this citizen (Tiffany Santos) didn't 'earn' this money legitimately (they can think up bullshit reasons for how she earned it) and decide to donate it? That's why it's so hard to prosecute these cases.
by Anonymous | reply 534 | January 9, 2023 6:23 PM |
It won't be hard to prosecute him, however.
by Anonymous | reply 535 | January 9, 2023 6:28 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 536 | January 9, 2023 6:28 PM |
Some pretty naive people here. Tiffany (and George) could just declare income from working for someone which would not flag up and would be hard to prove wasn't genuine work, and then donate as instructed. It's very hard to prove these cases.
by Anonymous | reply 537 | January 9, 2023 6:31 PM |
Honey R537, it's very hard to explain donating nearly a million dollars to one's own campaign, when one's salary is $55k. He has to show where that money came from. There are rules to these things, dear.
by Anonymous | reply 538 | January 9, 2023 6:34 PM |
R538 I don't understand your attitude towards me. I fully think that those two are corrupt as fuck. And I'm cheering on all the investigations. But look at how people have been saying that Trump would be done for - for years. And he's still like Teflon.
by Anonymous | reply 539 | January 9, 2023 6:40 PM |
Unless the campaign money arrived in unmarked 100's I imagine it's quite traceable.
by Anonymous | reply 540 | January 9, 2023 6:42 PM |
R540 agree but how do you prove that it didn't come from so-called 'legitimate' work? People can lie and make up reasons for work done for them which they paid for.
by Anonymous | reply 541 | January 9, 2023 6:44 PM |
R539, there are four investigating bodies on both the federal and state level. His crimes will be easy for them to trace; they will follow the money trail. Maybe the attitude comes from your calling people here "naive," as if you know all about it. He's not Trump. They will make sure they get to the bottom of his financials. People can't just "lie and make up reasons" when there's suspicion about where that money came from.
by Anonymous | reply 542 | January 9, 2023 6:47 PM |

R543 No idea. If they were smart and careful they would have to further cover their tracks but I can easily see those two being messy bitches and not doing so. Like Al Capone being caught on taxes. Let's hope the investigations get something....

The House of Representatives Monday passed a new set of rules to govern the chamber that will severely weaken the ability of the Office of Congressional Ethics to investigate members of Congress over suspicion of wrongdoing.

Santos is a fattie, maybe some closeted Republican is fine with occasionally fucking him. The bitchy part of me hopes there's some scandal where Santos outs closeted Republicans in Congress or the Senate with receipts.
That fugster Elise Stefanik also pings my gaydar. I think we will eventually see some scandal of female Republican Congresswoman or Senator being outed in some embarrassing way like sex tape or photo leak or a secret girlfriend goes public. I remember a thread on DL where someone posted of pic of Aaron Schock hanging out with Beto O'Rourke and Tulsi Gabbard on a hike. Tulsi came off as quite dykey in the photo.
Given what happened with Vicky Hartzler's nephew Andrew slamming her for crying about gay marriage on the House floor. I think we will some more incidents of gay or lesbian kids or relatives of anti-gay GOP politicians come out on their own and publicly slam their parents or relatives. I wouldn't be surprised if Andrew Hartzler has already been contacted by some of those people.

"George Santos campaign paid staffer nearly $100k to pretend to be Kevin McCarthy's chief of staff and get money from donors.
Sam Miele, who worked for Santos' campaign, is said to have impersonated Dan Meyer, who has served as McCarthy's chief of staff since 2019, in phone calls to donors during the 2020 and 2022 election cycles, people familiar with the matter said, per CNBC.
The Washington Times was the first to report the claim of impersonation last month, when it said that the fundraiser allegedly posing as Meyer also used a fake email address to send follow-up emails to donors.
A source, a New York GOP operative who did not disclose their name, told The Washington Times that McCarthy's aides first became aware of the allegations after a GOP donor flagged contact from the supposed McCarthy aide as "unusual" in August 2021.
According to CNBC, Santos' campaign paid Miele almost $50,000 for fundraising during the embattled lawmaker's failed 2020 run for Congress. Miele was also paid over $42,000 during the 2022 cycle, Federal Election Commission data shows, per CNBC."
by Anonymous | reply 565 | January 10, 2023 7:57 PM |
Is that legal? Will the real Dan Myers just shrug his shoulders?
by Anonymous | reply 566 | January 10, 2023 8:22 PM |
R566 Nope, not legal, as the article went on to explain (pasted below). But since it affects Republicans and McCarthy who have almost no integrity, I don't expect them to make a complaint about it.
"Brendan Fischer, a deputy executive director of the watchdog Documented, and Robert Maguire, a research director at the watchdog Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, both told CNBC that the actions could be seen as criminal conduct.
"A person who misrepresented themselves as speaking on behalf of a candidate in order to raise money may have committed a criminal violation, and any other person who knowingly and willfully participated in the plan could also face criminal charges," Fischer said in an email, per CNBC."

Of course they could. They could pressure the RNC not to seat him (too late now), they could publicly ostracize him from the party and make it clear that no member of congress (either side) should or will have anything to do with him and they can support the investigations ongoing by the various DAs and other agencies investigating him instead of their “well, in two years we won’t support him” tepid response.
