I just caused a ruckus dropping my car off for service

Made a service appt and when I arrived I parked and walked up to the counter. Two girls were working but neither one made eye contact or offered any assistance even after an "excuse me" or an even louder "does anyone work here?". At this point I was pissed off so I took off down an employee hallway until I found someone in an office and said I needed assistance and no one offered up front. He scurried out and found someone but I hate being ignored by people who are supposed to be in customer service. You don't have to drop everything but at least make eye contact and smile.

Someone’s pantyhose are twisted. Smoke a joint , sissy, you’re wound up.

by Anonymousreply 1December 12, 2022 5:31 PM

Welcome to 2022

Customer service is non existent now. Businesses beg workers to work now.

by Anonymousreply 2December 12, 2022 5:33 PM

Didn’t even ask to see a manager. She just walked down the hall and got one herself.

by Anonymousreply 3December 12, 2022 5:38 PM

I had a similar experience at an Apple store. Apple!

I walked in and asked an idle worker how I could get an estimate on a trade in. He answered “speak to her, “ pointing to another red shirt, and headed into the back. Without saying a word to me, she turned and walked after him. It turned out her job was “greeter” and she just put my name into the system for the next available salesperson to talk to me. So rude. I don’t think she was Apple material.

by Anonymousreply 4December 12, 2022 5:39 PM

Whole Foods sent me an email Saturday that included butternut squash / spinach / pecorino crustless quiche, so I called my local store if they had them in stock. Lisa, the douchebaguette who answered the phone refused to look for one, but referred me to a page where I could order one. I responded, "That's not what I asked you. Do you have any of these quiche in the store NOW?"

She said, "well, I don't know," and repeated the web address.

I reported her to the corporate HQ, then called the store back. Lisa answered again, and I told her "I want to speak to someone who's not you." I could hear her reaching for her pearls, but all she said was "okay." And she transferred me to someone who wasn't so lazy, who told me they had them.

I didn't bother to go to the store. I hadn't gotten over Lisa yet. I have plenty to eat in the house, so I won't be going shopping for another few days. I'll probably just have stuff delivered.

by Anonymousreply 5December 12, 2022 5:50 PM

Stay away from my back door!!!

by Anonymousreply 6December 12, 2022 5:51 PM

OP here. As someone who has dealt with customer service, I always greeted everyone with some sort of acknowledgement of their existence even if I was on the phone. A smile and eye contact goes a long way.

by Anonymousreply 7December 12, 2022 5:53 PM

I notice this happening more and more. I'm starting to turn just slightly curmudgeonly, even as a millennial the poor manners of Gen Z absolutely blow me away. No eye contact, treat you as an unwelcome distraction, thank you/have a nice day/etc unreciprocated, mumbling quietly/no enunciation, and this seems to be the norm to the point that it really stands out when a young person is just a little bit polite or attentive. There are places I end up not going I just walk out the second I see the irritated stare of the floofy haired host.

by Anonymousreply 8December 12, 2022 6:00 PM

Sounds like the bitch who works the front desk at my gym in the morning. She's always looking at her phone when I walk in. I said "good morning" many times when I'd come to the gym, and she never even looked up from her phone or even managed a grunt back to me.

One morning, I walked in, said "good morning," predictably got no response, and said, "It's nice to see the gym giving mutes employment opportunities."

That made her look up from her phone, but I'm pretty sure she didn't know what "mute" meant.

by Anonymousreply 9December 12, 2022 6:00 PM

Nobody cares about CS! There is a huge labor problem that goes way beyond what we hear in the news.

by Anonymousreply 10December 12, 2022 6:08 PM

R8 it’s the worst among those of a more highly graduated hue. The inflammatory societal movements of the past few years have created an indignation and entitlement not soon to go away.

by Anonymousreply 11December 12, 2022 6:08 PM

Hardly a *ruckus*, OP.

by Anonymousreply 12December 12, 2022 6:11 PM

Well it got the scurrying and I got assistance fast. Sometimes Karening works.

by Anonymousreply 13December 12, 2022 6:15 PM

R12 I guess it was for Nelly Prisspot

by Anonymousreply 14December 12, 2022 6:16 PM

I like the service station at my dealership where I bought my car, and I have to point out EVERY FUCKING TIME that the car is under extended PAID service agreement.

Just do your fucking job.

by Anonymousreply 15December 12, 2022 6:18 PM

Nobody works because people's default mode for anything other asslicking subservience and 5 star service is scorched earth tactics and day ruining. Christ, calling corporate on someone because they couldn't be arsed to leave the phones (something corporate really frowns upon) to check if they have a quiche in stock is the wrong move. Just quit cunting out everyone, the behavior is paid forward.

by Anonymousreply 17December 12, 2022 6:27 PM

R16 I don't think acknowledging someone standing in front of you is asslicking subservience. It is common courtesy though.

I'd love to know who came up with that haircut R17.

by Anonymousreply 18December 12, 2022 6:31 PM

These threads are always so embarrassing lol.

by Anonymousreply 19December 12, 2022 6:31 PM

OP, you started out cunty. You know you did. You think those workers are less than you and it's probably written all over your scowly face.

by Anonymousreply 20December 12, 2022 6:34 PM

[quote] Two girls were working

Which means they had other stuff to do. But Miss OP isn't satisfied unless every second of every minute of every hour of every DAY is not about HER and HER NEEDS!

by Anonymousreply 21December 12, 2022 6:36 PM

Casual racism at R11.

by Anonymousreply 22December 12, 2022 6:38 PM

I will NOT be IGNORED!

by Anonymousreply 23December 12, 2022 6:43 PM

I need to know what type of service establishment this was before rendering judgment. Was it a car dealer? Which brand? Was it a Firestone or Meineke or similar? Was it a Jiffy-Lube?

by Anonymousreply 24December 12, 2022 6:44 PM

Miss Crawford demands only excellence at all establishments!

by Anonymousreply 25December 12, 2022 6:46 PM

It was a Lincoln-Cad dealership R24.

by Anonymousreply 26December 12, 2022 6:47 PM

Then yes, a Lincoln dealership should be expected to provide decent customer service, which didn’t happen here.

by Anonymousreply 27December 12, 2022 6:50 PM

OP, you weren’t wrong. The two girls sound like absolute cunts. I’ve done this before too.

by Anonymousreply 28December 12, 2022 6:53 PM

Probably silent quitting.

I've had my fair share and I hate that I can look like a Karen. I think you can still get your point across but don't raise your voice and say what you need to say.

by Anonymousreply 29December 12, 2022 6:53 PM

The two girls working the service counter were young, big tits and tight clothes. Probably get away with being rude because they work with men who are staring at the tits all day and don't care.

by Anonymousreply 30December 12, 2022 6:53 PM

Lincoln Cadillac?

Are we in 1974?

by Anonymousreply 31December 12, 2022 6:54 PM

by Anonymousreply 39December 12, 2022 7:13 PM

OP,

Atta girl.

by Anonymousreply 40December 12, 2022 7:14 PM

Wow.....you may want to go to another dealership and have ALL the fluids changed right away (and the gas tank pumped out and steam cleaned).....they probably dropped metal filings in every single orifice of your car.......

by Anonymousreply 41December 12, 2022 7:18 PM

I did this at Walgreens a couple of months ago. In flyoverstan when you act that way people kiss your feet since they’re used to getting some passive aggressive remark that isn’t quite understood until later.

by Anonymousreply 42December 12, 2022 7:55 PM

I'm not worried r41.

by Anonymousreply 43December 12, 2022 7:58 PM

Nobody gives a fuck! Especially me!

by Anonymousreply 44December 12, 2022 8:12 PM

As someone else who spent half his twenties working in customer service (1991 through 1996), what gets me about these situations is the fact the current crop of customer service workers- if positions were reversed and I were serving them with the same rude disdain, stupidity and attitude- would be the first ones to pitch a screeching bitch!

by Anonymousreply 45December 12, 2022 8:14 PM

Did I ever tell you about the time Walter Pidgeon dropped his trousers at the service station so of course I sent Rory Calhoun over to do the job and give him a free lube job while I jerked off?

Oh, but this is a thread about poor customer service (NOTHING to do with my professional care) that I swear I read in 1946 while Cole Porter blew me.

Yes, we had boring people back then, too.

by Anonymousreply 46December 12, 2022 8:26 PM

Your fantasy reaction makes you feel better, OP

by Anonymousreply 47December 12, 2022 8:28 PM

OP you and I are kindred spirits. I too will not just sit back and be treated (or mistreated) however some CS rep or some functionary decides to treat me when I see I'm being treated poorly I am a painfully quiet person 99% of the time. I give everyone the chance to be their best, or at the least meet some minimum level of acceptable behavior, but if they don't my reaction can go anywhere from a polite admonishment to an outright tirade when they demonstrate they don't give a happy damn about their job, or whether or not the customer is happy. When it gets that bad I never spend much time on the offender because that would be a waste of my time. I go right up to the top level on the ladder that I can find. If they're not doing what they should be doing I then move on up to the corporate level by phone or email. And one thing people who do a shitty job find out is that I never stop until I am satisfied someone has taken the proper steps to insure it doesn't happen again.

I learned a long time ago that life is just too damn short to sit back and let others mistreat you.

by Anonymousreply 48December 12, 2022 8:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 49December 12, 2022 8:32 PM

by Anonymousreply 51December 12, 2022 8:36 PM

R48, I could have written that response.

by Anonymousreply 52December 12, 2022 8:39 PM

It's interesting that younger people think rudeness and bad service is normal and expected.

by Anonymousreply 53December 12, 2022 8:43 PM

R53 it is the norm now. It doesn’t matter if you’re 12 years old or 112 years old.

by Anonymousreply 54December 12, 2022 8:50 PM

IMO, it's a combination of older people being "invisible" to younger people. Also, people (not just young people) nowadays are glued to their phones rather than interacting with the person right in front of them. Even at work, this habit can't be turned off.

by Anonymousreply 55December 12, 2022 8:55 PM

They don’t R53. Do you know any young people?

by Anonymousreply 56December 12, 2022 8:56 PM

That's nothing OP.

Bunny Bixler and I were in the semi-finals - the very semi-finals, mind you - of the ping-pong tournament at the club and this ghastly thing happened. We were both playing way over our heads and the score was 29-28. And we had this really terrific volley and I stepped back to get this really terrific shot. And I stepped on the ping-pong ball! I just squashed it to bits. And then Bunny and I ran to the closet of the game room to get another ping-pong ball and the closet was locked! Imagine? We had to call the whole thing off. Well, it was ghastly. Well, it was just ghastly.

by Anonymousreply 57December 12, 2022 8:59 PM

I've been lucky R54. Most of the businesses I patronize are run by oldsters who still see customer service as valuable. The girls today were not normal for me.

by Anonymousreply 58December 12, 2022 9:03 PM

I do think I should commend the front desk people at my gym. Somebody clearly got to them because they emit the cheeriest, loudest “Hello!” and “Bye! Have a nice day” I’ve ever received. And they do it every time. Eye contact, smiles, the whole nine yards. It’s a wonder I don’t buy more of their smoothies than I do, just because it’s so nice to bask in that good old-time, “How can I help you?”

Every car dealership I've ever been to sends out a customer satisfaction survey a few days after you've been there for service. I would make sure to give them all Zeros.

by Anonymousreply 67December 12, 2022 10:08 PM

Service people, laborers and other blue collars are always nasty to LGBTQ people. We have to be very diligent to prevent them ripping us off. They're still the schoolyard bullies looking for fags to beat up.

by Anonymousreply 68December 12, 2022 10:16 PM

For 30 years or so I’ve listened to parents moan and whine about how hard it is to raise kids. Well, these kids are now in the workforce and if they’re not chronically late or calling in sick with a hangnail, they’re thinking that anticipatory and kind-hearted service is beneath them or just, like, gosh, you know, so hard. Ironically, I think that Karens could be the parents of these young people. Too bad those parents didn’t work a little bit harder in turning out young people who have social skills.

I’ve basically stopped buying things unless I absolutely 100% cannot do without something. In restaurants I sit at the bar before going into dinner. Watch for the older waiters - they’re the ones you want to wait on you.

by Anonymousreply 69December 12, 2022 10:20 PM

I was in line at a cashier station at Kroger a couple of years ago. I put my items on the conveyor belt at the same time two employees approached the cashier. The three of them chit-chatted, then they turned to each other for a more in-depth conversation. My items were right there, and none of them bothered to look my way. After a minute or so, I said I was in a real hurry.

One of the employees looked at me and said, "We will get to your food when WE want to."

I was tempted to go to the customer service counter, but I was afraid of being labeled a Karen. So I let it go.

by Anonymousreply 70December 12, 2022 10:35 PM

The CVS near my house employs mostly very young people, except for the pharmacists. They are always very polite and helpful.

by Anonymousreply 74December 12, 2022 10:39 PM

Well, at least you were able to find a manager and didn't have to ask to speak to one, Karen.

by Anonymousreply 75December 12, 2022 10:39 PM

I got a message that my two old Volvo wagons needed new airbags, so I made appointments for them one day apart. The first one went okay, and they did a courtesy vacuum which was nice.

I showed-up the next day and the receotionist said, "You were here yesterday". I said yes it's another car and showed her my paper work.

This time I sat in the waiting for 4 hours. When they finally brought my car out I noticed it hadn't been vacuumed this time. Okay, whatever. But as I drove away I noticed the "airbag needs serviced" message still on my dashboard.

To this day I don't think they changed the airbag or even worked on the car. Just put it aside and brought it out hours later. I was treated like a homeless person coming back for seconds at the shelter.

I've worked several retail positions and have no idea what you're talking about. Of course she was supposed to either put the customer on hold and page that department, or go check for it herself, as the employees at our local Whole Foods do. If she was on a register, she should have transferred the call the manager on duty.

I was blown off at the local Toyota dealership. My car has a problem that’s the subject of a couple class action suits and there’s a service bulletin for it. I was nice as could be but they treated me like an idiot, even though I had all the info from my regular mechanic. The car’s firmware needed an update, nothing more. The battery kept dying. I was pissed. That place has a terrible reputation.

Finally another dealer did it, with a smile! They were so nice.

The takeaway is…and more warranty work and I’ll drive the 45 minute to the other dealership.

I was waiting in a small framing shop while the proprietress helped another customer. I waited patiently and did not cause a fuss and did a good job of pretending I was just fascinated by the art on the wall so I didn’t act like a cliche.

When the other customer left, I made eye contact with her and was just about to tell her what I was looking for when she opened her mouth said, “What?”

I said ‘What?’ That certainly gets right to the point, doesn’t it.

To her credit, she seemed embarrassed. .

Is there an option B to how anyone would or should act in this situation?

by Anonymousreply 86December 12, 2022 11:48 PM

THAT drives me CRAZY, OP!!!

If you are too busy to help someone, just LOOK THE FUCK UP and acknowledge people and ask for a minute! Anything else is just hostility. I know they can see me standing there, and are working hard to pretend I'm not.

I was a M'aitre D at a busy restaurant and we had service experts come in for seminars from time to time as well as excellent training. They taught that a customer will generally wait patiently as long as you greet and acknowledge them immediately and in my experience that is true.

My first job out of college was customer service related. As a result, I’m extremely polite, and prepared, whenever I need the services of someone. And in response, I always get reasonably friendly, helpful assistance. Always. Can’t think of a single time in years, many years, that I’ve had any kind of issue. Remarkably, I live in New Jersey, which is filled to the absolute brim with complete assholes, according to my partner…who isn’t as friendly to customer service people, and gets the same treatment in return, apparently.

Car service department, waste management, doctors office…I’ve had to deal with all three in the past week. All three were tricky: requiring extra stuff, call backs, changes to original plans, etc. All three went great. Probably because I was fucking polite, prepared, and respectful to the customer service person and got the same in return.

by Anonymousreply 89December 13, 2022 12:06 AM

My very nice PC doctor had the most hostile, evil witches running the front of house and medical paperwork desks in his office. I patiently informed him a number of times how unprofessional they were and it made the experience really sour and enraging, I mean they were really bad.

Finally one day I just said I'd find another doctor entirely who treated me better as a paying customer and he really seems concerned. I told him he had no idea how many just never came back because of those bitches. Life is too short and most places try a lot harder.

by Anonymousreply 90December 13, 2022 12:08 AM

Sorry, I call bullshit, r89. I'm as respectful and "prepared" as fuck and frequently encounter lousy customer service.

by Anonymousreply 91December 13, 2022 12:09 AM

These things can really vary. My Chevrolet dealership is very nice to work with, and my mom really likes the Mazda dealership as well. However before she bought her current car she had to deal with the Subaru people, who were not the greatest.

I find almost all customer service people these days to be terrific to work with. Off the top of my head, the most negative experiences have been at a rather posh supermarket where the cashiers can be hit or miss.

by Anonymousreply 92December 13, 2022 12:09 AM

R91: call bullshit all you want. Your experience has obviously been different than mine, unfortunately. But I’ll get back to you if I have any terrible experiences, ok? I’m half serious!

Sometimes the problem is that a manager or higher-up of some sort is covering the desk for an absent (or fired!) employee. I strolled into a dentist's office one time for my scheduled appointment, and the dentist himself was the only one behind the front counter . . . and he was busily chatting with what was clearly (from the conversation) his weekend golfing buddy. They covered last weekend's golf, plans for next weekend's golf, and a real estate opportunity ripe for investment before the dentist deigned to acknowledge that his patient was present, a nice ten minute wait. I changed dentists shortly thereafter.

One thing that will turn me from a quiet man really quick is a cashier who doesn't say a damn word when he or she hands me my receipt and/or change and just expects me to walk off. I have a stock response to those people. I just look at them for a few seconds, giving them time to say "thank you", and as they stand there staring at me I say "YOU'RE WELCOME!". It never fails to embarrass the hell out of them.

by Anonymousreply 97December 13, 2022 12:52 AM

You have to ask for their Twitter or Instagram handle to communicate with them via DM. Send them a selfie, and maybe they'll recognize that you're the person standing next to them. Better yet, take a selfie of the two of you.

by Anonymousreply 98December 13, 2022 12:55 AM

R97 Wow, you are just out of control - and so witty! I don't think I've ever heard that before. Damn!

by Anonymousreply 99December 13, 2022 12:56 AM

I stopped at a package store in a small Berkshire town. I took my beer and newspaper up to the counter and realized I was alone. I wandered around the store, through the back and around the parking lot.

Finally a rough looking woman came in apologizing. Said she was gardening. There was no garden behind the store. I was so confused. I could have stolen everything in the place.

by Anonymousreply 100December 13, 2022 3:25 AM

This is why self checkout it great. I worked as a cashier in the past and I think a lot of people in retail positions are just really numb. So many people act like complete psychopaths no matter what you do. It gets to the point where it’s hard not to think of every customer as some asshole.

We stopped at a charming antique store, went in and looked around for quite a bit, found a couple of things and went to the counter to pay and thats when we realized there wasnt anyone there. Waited around for a good 15 mins, then left the stuff on the counter and walked out. To this day I still wonder about that. There were cases with silver and jewelry sitting there,we could have easily cleaned up. Were we so inclined.

by Anonymousreply 102December 13, 2022 4:39 AM

I've been inside a store and called the store on the phone to let them know that I needed assistance and no one was helping me.

by Anonymousreply 103December 13, 2022 4:46 AM

I caused a ruckus today too OP. In a bank. The bank manager was an outright asshole to me, treated me like I was dirt on the bottom of her shoe. I called her a fucking bitch at that point. I don't have a medium setting. It's either cool or boiling with me. Later I called customer service with tears in my voice, to tell them how mean she'd been. Shaming me for taking money out of my daughter's bank account to pay for singing lessons. This bank is in a small strip mall so its neighboring store is a liquor store. She's never seen anyone you she considers more horrible than me? She really made me feel like shit.

by Anonymousreply 105December 13, 2022 12:27 PM

Younger employees ( read: female) sincerely believe that you are inconveniencing them and that, if they don't want to be bothered with you, that is their right.

by Anonymousreply 106December 13, 2022 12:29 PM

Like who in the hell do you think you are? Just because your ass swishes up to the counter and stands there mute doesn’t demand attention.

by Anonymousreply 107December 13, 2022 12:31 PM

I am surprised no one mentioned homophobia.

Given Datalounge, it's likely that OP (future denials notwithstanding) is a great big swishy elderly queen, and the women at the counter were rude to him as a result. (I would also not discount that, like man great big swishy elderly queens, he was particularly attuned to the faintest whiff of disrespect and thus flew off the handle at behavior that would leave most people nonplussed.)

So the combination of homophobic clerks and overly sensitive OP created a bad situation.

[quote]Why is it that Chick-fil-A is able to do good customer service? What's their secret? Surely they aren't paying great wages. And it's the same monotonous work as everywhere else, so...

by Anonymousreply 109December 13, 2022 1:17 PM

Recently, I walked into the lobby of a restaurant okay it was a fast food place, 10 minutes before they opened and yes the doors were open as they shared the lobby with another business that was already open hours earlier.

Anyway I sat there literally 10 feet or so away from the counter, saw 3 employees walking around getting ready to open. 10 minutes later, they opened and I remain sitting, 10 minutes after they opened, not a single person said a single word to me, the gentleman who had patiently waiting for them to open, to be served, who had sat there for 20 minutes in total.

Not a "good morning sir", not a " we'll be open soon sir", not a "we're open sir, how can we help you".... NOTHING as i sat just a few feet away from them, so I calmly and quietly got up and walked out. Was it really MY JOB to go to them?

by Anonymousreply 110December 13, 2022 1:22 PM

Sorry to hear that, R101. Here in Florida, customer service people are friendly ... the few that there are anyway.

by Anonymousreply 111December 13, 2022 1:23 PM

It really is hit or miss these days. But lately customer service has been abhorrent. The guest/customer/patient facing patients know they have the upper hand (hard to find employees lately). I've had really pleasant, friendly service from our Gen Z brethren and some really shitty service from our Gen X/Millenial brethren.

At the very least, look up when someone approaches you. Rule of thumb: at 10 feet look up and acknowledge a customer; at 5 feet greet them.

by Anonymousreply 112December 13, 2022 1:33 PM

R110 was inside a subway in Walmart

by Anonymousreply 113December 13, 2022 1:36 PM

I was a branch manager for a bank back way back in the 1980s, and our company had a policy that if there was a line of customers waiting, they had to be acknowledged every 60 seconds. A simple, "We'll be with you as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience" was all it took. It's amazing how something so simple as acknowledging people can diffuse tension.

by Anonymousreply 114December 13, 2022 2:37 PM

I hate when there are two cashiers or a cashier and a bagger who carry on a conversation with each other and don't utter a word to the customer, not even to relate the price total.

by Anonymousreply 115December 13, 2022 2:44 PM

R115 Once when I was waiting to be helped, there were two employees behind the counter having a conversation that seemed to never terminate. Finally, I spoke up and said, in a very nice voice, "I can come back when you're between conversations." That got 'em to stop and one of them apologized.

by Anonymousreply 116December 13, 2022 2:56 PM

R116 I bet you felt so fucking vindicated! Fuck!

by Anonymousreply 117December 13, 2022 3:30 PM

R117 Actually, it made me chuckle.

by Anonymousreply 118December 13, 2022 3:54 PM

I kid OP; you are not wrong. State your mother effing boundaries.

by Anonymousreply 124December 13, 2022 6:16 PM

Me too R119. Raising Canes Chicken is the same way. Forced, scripted greetings make me cringe. Like most people, I had customer service positions when I was younger. It’s not hard to just naturally speak to another person like you’re both human beings. At least it didn’t used to be.

by Anonymousreply 125December 13, 2022 6:33 PM

I posted something similar about my disgust about the lack of general standards. It's amazing how many agreed, but sad just how many losers are out there who will defend people taking jobs, then not wanting to do them.

You have a generation who feel they are entitled to start at the top and refuse to work their way up/put the time in to advance... and this is celebrated by lazy fucks as giving the finger to the system, because those before them were taken advantage of.

Yes, I think there needs to be a fair living wage, but give me a break on 16-year-olds thinking they are owed a chunk of the business profits to flip burgers.

Just stay calm. Don't raise your voice. Only Karen's do that. You can still fuck people up and make them feel incompetent. by Anonymousreply 129December 13, 2022 8:02 PM

You cunts are insufferable. The young nice looking teens have great customer service at Chich Fil A and nothing is off putting about them. They are efficient and pleasant. Those evangelicals are doing something right with that company's corporate culture.

I actually prefer popeyes sandwich better but hate their customer service.

by Anonymousreply 130December 13, 2022 8:07 PM

R130, at my local Popeye’s when I lived in Brooklyn, they hired a TIM who spoke *only* en Español to the customers. Not a word in English. Extremely long and ridiculous eyelashes.

I think he lasted about 2 weeks. It was absurd—this was in a neighborhood where even the second most common language wasn’t Spanish.

by Anonymousreply 131December 13, 2022 8:10 PM

R131 TIM? ¿qué es eso?

Some of you must just LOOK to be offended, or only recall negative stories. I'm out a lot and travel for work a lot, and I feel like 90% of workers are quite nice/friendly/helpful. Of course there are the occasional morons/assholes, but definitely not the majority.

by Anonymousreply 134December 13, 2022 9:23 PM

Trader Joe's is the only national chain store I can think of where the service is uniformly excellent.

They always go out of their way, from proactively checking that your eggs are all unbroken to tracking down items in the back that are not out on the shelf.

by Anonymousreply 140December 14, 2022 12:05 AM

Trader Joe’s employees are great except for their tendency — in most locations I’ve visited, which have mostly been in NYC — to constantly get in your way or block your way or expect you to move out of the way when they’re stocking the shelves. It never, ever ends, the shelf-stocking, and they never, ever seem to say “Excuse me.” They seem to have this belief that customers are obligated to move without the employees even saying a word.

by Anonymousreply 141December 14, 2022 12:17 AM

TBH, that sounds like a you problem R141

by Anonymousreply 142December 14, 2022 12:19 AM

It's most supermarkets as well, R141. I completely agree. The employees congregate in one area so they can chat while stocking the shelves. You have two on each side of the aisle with barely any room to move through them and they walk directly in your pathway and expect you to be the one to stop or get out of their way. Something I've stopped doing. A couple of good whacks with the carriage or a bump to the Achilles should solve this ignorance of ones general surroundings.

by Anonymousreply 143December 14, 2022 12:29 AM

You must go to some shitty supermarkets

by Anonymousreply 144December 14, 2022 12:40 AM

It’s true. Post-pandemic customer service is terrible. It’s been several years since I visited Japan, and I remember feeling so demoralized returning to the US. However, the worst customer service I ever experienced was in the UK (London).

by Anonymousreply 146December 14, 2022 12:48 AM

R146 is a retired customer service asshole.

by Anonymousreply 147December 14, 2022 12:50 AM

The Trader Joe’s in my city has across the board great customer service. I almost always have to ask someone about a product because they’ve moved it, or more frequently, it’s been discontinued (RIP TJ egg salad and vegetarian meatballs!). They are always super friendly and helpful.

Unfortunately, TJ is a 20 minute drive from my house, so I sometimes go to the Fresh Market around the corner (my only other close choice is a terrible Kroger) and oh my god, the worst! There is never anyone on the floor offering any help, and in fact, the managers there, if you happen to see one, just scurry around not making eye contact. The cashiers aren’t much better…other than two nice, old hippie type ladies, all the cashiers are surly teenagers. The other night I tried to buy a bottle of wine while there, and there was no one working over the age of 21 to scan it. The teen girl said the manager had to “run out” but would be back…it wasn’t worth it for me to throw a fit, but the middle aged lady in the next checkout line was going OFF that she couldn’t buy her bottles of Pinot!

by Anonymousreply 152December 14, 2022 2:22 AM

I have 6 large cloth boxes with handles and hard fold down bottoms I religiously use when I do the weekly marketing. I am majorly anti-plastic bags. I try my best to always use the self service checkout lines my market provides for people making full cart purchases, but every once in a while they're all in use and I have to go to a manned checkout. Now this store has for years promoted customers using their own bags, but it never fails when it put all my boxes (THAT I BOUGHT AT THAT STORE YEARS AGO) on the conveyer first, the stupid checkout person looks at them like "what are these for?", or they start scanning my items and shoving them in the plastic bags on their turntable. When I say "NO, use my bags please they look at me like I'm nuts". It's as if they've suddenly gone brain dead. There's one idiot checker in that store who never fails to say "uhhhhhh, do you want me to put everything in these bags?". The nitwit has checked me out more times than I can count, but can't remember that I always bring my own bags. I even had one very young moron who insisted on putting all my items in their plastic bags and then putting the plastic bags into my cloth boxes, until I had to say "absolutely not - that makes no sense". It took the older checker in the line next to her to look over and ask the fool "why would you do that?".

I have concluded that a large percentage of people under the age of 30 who take these types of jobs are either mentally defective or are on some sort of medication that renders them incapable of rational thought.

by Anonymousreply 153December 14, 2022 11:17 AM

R153 you have outlined why I go to stores where I can bring my own bags AND do my own check out.

by Anonymousreply 154December 14, 2022 11:45 AM

R148: I have encountered attitude from Fresh Market employees in occasion, particularly one cashier. They're a weird store, with limited selection and high prices, but once in a while an interesting item will go on sale. My situation parallels yours, substituting Publix for Kroger.

by Anonymousreply 155December 14, 2022 2:53 PM

Last time I went to my Toyota dealer, it was chaos. There were about 10 employees at the service desk. It looked very much like the DMV, except there was no system for queueing up the customers. There was just a crowd of people, but no lines. (There wasn't room for lines.. People coming in after me would walk up to one of the attendees instead of also trying to figure out whose turn was next. A couple of attendees were not serving people, but just doing something on their computer, refusing to make eye contact.

I think I loudly complained, "Is there a line?" and "It's not clear where I'm supposed to go". Finally I walked up to one of the attendees, who pointed towards another attendee. That person finally helped me. I'm not looking forward to going back next week for my three-year maintenance and inspection.

by Anonymousreply 156December 14, 2022 3:03 PM

And just wait for some NYT thinkpiece about how criticizing bad customer service is a microagression to persons of color. Watch.

by Anonymousreply 157December 14, 2022 3:10 PM

I get very good customer service at my BMW dealership. Yes, the cars are probably overpriced and the maintenance isn’t cheap. But I’m reluctant to switch to a less expensive brand, because the ownership experience is really good and they make a solid effort to retain their customers in my opinion.

Frankly, I never expect to be treated like a king by service workers who don't even know my name. I just expect to be treated with a modicum of respect since my money is what helps pay their salary, and a passable level of proficiency. Since my expectations are on the lower side of good service I don't appreciate it when they can't even meet those standards.

by Anonymousreply 167December 14, 2022 8:26 PM

My only expectations R167 are:

Acknowledge my existence without me having to wave my hands in front of your face.

Be willing/able to answer a simple question. If unable, find me someone who can.

I’m a real cunt. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 168December 14, 2022 10:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 169December 14, 2022 11:01 PM

My one customer service story for you is from Target. There were sale labels in front of a product. The way to get the discount was adding it the Target Circle app. Checked out….used the app….no discount. Didn’t notice it until the receipt came out. I walked over to the customer service counter where two girls chatted a while before acknowledging I was there.

I explained that the discount on the app didn’t work. I showed them my phone with the digital coupon I saved. Puzzled and don’t give a fuck faces on both of them. Then the head twat says “oh, that discount is for online purchases only.” And I said “that doesn’t make sense. Why would you have sale signs on the shelf in the store?” Head twat says that’s the story and we’re sticking to it.

My partner had to snap me out of it before I told them their response was the stupidest fucking thing I’d ever heard and they were two of the dumbest little assholes I’d ever seen.

Turns out Target DOES pull that shit. They actually put sale signs on the shelf for online only discounts. Just like leaving old sale signs up, this is another deliberate deceptive practice by Target.

by Anonymousreply 170December 14, 2022 11:14 PM

R170 and your mary ass was about to bark on the employees having to enforce/explain that inane policy. These people are minimum wage workers, not project analysts. I've been there myself and even I apologized to employees. They arent communication experts, yet they have to try to explain these tricky advertising practices.

by Anonymousreply 171December 15, 2022 1:15 AM

I read an article recently where employees of Walmart complained that when people are hired to work on the floor they are basically given zero training. They are just told where to go and someone will eventually give them something to do. But several people said that never even happened and they just walked around for days doing whatever they could find to do, like straightening up merchandise on the shelves. When they would ask someone they though was a department supervisor what they should be doing they were looked at like "what the fuck are you asking me for?".

by Anonymousreply 172December 15, 2022 1:47 AM

This is the only thread where people aren't complaining about how Trader Joe's cashiers are "too friendly." Thank God.

Saying loudly, "Does anybody work here?" makes the situation worse, IMO.

I hope the complainers here aren't the same people who refuse to use self-checkout.
