From David Brooks:
With Spanberger pulling ahead in Va.-7 with almost all the votes counted, confirming the general trend of the night — a status quo election — Republicans have to be asking: If we can’t produce a red wave with superhigh inflation and the Democratic president’s low approval ratings, when can we produce a red wave? Democrats have been getting their recriminations in over the last few weeks. Now it may be the Republicans’ turn.

Ohio was never winnable. The Senate there is split one democrat, and one Republican and that's the best we're probably going to do.
I live Half the year in South carolina, and have the year Ohio. The fervency of Trump support and rural Ohio is unbelievable. There's nothing like that in the south. Meanwhile, the cities keep trending bluer and bluer.

"Let’s check in on the Kentucky anti-abortion ballot measure. We have 64 percent of the expected vote reporting, and the abortion-rights side is still in the lead with 53 percent, while the anti-abortion rights side has 47 percent. The abortion-rights side of the amendment continues to run well ahead of the Democratic Senate candidate, signaling that some voters are crossing party lines to oppose this ballot measure, which would effectively end all legal opposition to abortion bans in Kentucky."

Interesting that many polls underestimated republicans in 2020; now it looks like they underestimated democrats. Many of these races democrats are winning they weren't supposed to win, or, win as easily. Case in point; NY, where Hochul is breezing to an easy win, but the some of the polls actually had Zeldin ahead.
At this point the Senate is still a toss-up and we won't know the final result until Georgia (which could easily end in a run-off) and Nevada, are in.... Cortez Masto was trailing by a point or two in the polls, but again, if tonight proves anything at all, it's that pollsters really don't know how to poll voters.

Laxalt was the Attorney General of Nevada from 2015 to 2019, but I think that's the only elected office he's ever had. His grandfather, the late Paul Laxalt, was a U.S. Senator, and was the Governor of Nevada. I'm not sure where Adam Laxalt lives now. His opponent in this election, Catherine Cortez-Masto, who is the incumbent Senator, was the Nevada Attorney General before Laxalt. Nevada results for Senate are starting to trickle in, but so far only from the sparsely-populated rural counties, which are deep red. So the numbers currently skew towards Laxalt. Clark County (Las Vegas) and Washoe County (Reno) are the only 2 big counties in terms of large population. Those are the counties that will determine the outcome. So wait until Washoe and Clark have both reported in.

Biden really has been underestimated throughout his career. So many folk have laughed at and dismissed him and yet he ploughs on. Tonight’s mid-term results may well be the stuff that many presidents would have dreamed of.
Regardless of whether he runs again, I suspect history will see him as a crucial bulwark for democracy at a dangerous time.

Things are indeed looking better than expected for Democrats, but the bottom line is still power -who will control the House and Senate? If the Repugs take either they have promised to wreak havoc. We're facing shutdowns of congressional oversight and multiple impeachment proceedings -not to mention a likely government shutdown.
It's grim, folks. It could have been much worse, but it's still grim.

"Does this fairly good Democrat result mean America might secretly like the reasonably stable, genial elderly gentleman in the White House after all?"
I think it's the flip side of the dynamic when Trump was "unexpectedly" elected president. The media didn't pick up on the underlying dynamics in the electorate and a segment of Trump voters weren't vocal about supporting him.
I'd imagine there has to be a not insignificant number of voters in this election who voted for Dems when they maybe previously voted for Republicans, or they simply didn't vote. Because, while it never seems like it based on what we see everyday in the news and social media, there really are some normally conservative/Republican voters who absolutely have limits to the insanity and bullshit they'll accept.
Plus, I'd think on the issue of abortion alone there had to be a not insignificant number of people swinging towards Dems even if saying so in their families and communities would be unpopular. Plus, the issue energized the Dem electorate and maybe got more people who would always vote Dem to not consider staying at home.

Hold your horses, Eeyore. We don’t yet know who will take the House and Senate. Even if Dems lose them both, we’re doing way better than virtually anyone predicted. Even if we lose the House, both CNN and MSNBC have said the narrow margin of a potential Republican majority will make it virtually impossible for them to get anything done.

As of right now, including Clark County (Las Vegas), the most populous county, the vote for Nevada U.S. Senate is
Cortez-Masto (D) 54.29%
Laxalt (R) 42.95%
There is still the 2nd most populous county, Washoe (Reno area) yet to report, but that is generally Democratic. At this point it looks like a clear win for Cortez-Masto.
