The most recent Fox poll has Grassley up by 6. I never thought that was a realistic pick-up.

I feel a pervading sense of dread. Even if we have a 'blue wave', what about next time? What of all these haters, fascists and Qloons?
What is our future?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 6, 2022 3:33 AM |
I don't know who ever thought Grassley was a realistic democratic target. I live in southwest Wisconsin next door to Iowa. Most Iowans up here don't like him but they still support him because of his "support" for farmers. Any poll that's says he's only up by six is full of bologna... If you don't believe me bookmark this post and come back to it.
As a side note our US representative D Ron Kind is not running for reelection and his seat is favored to flip to Republican and J6 supporter/instructions derrick van orden... This Congressional district is not looking good and it includes La Crosse. Early voting absentee turnout up here I'm told is decent but not to 2018 levels...

by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 7, 2022 10:31 AM |
it has been reported that Trump is very upset that he was impeached twice and has been asking House members to make sure they impeach Biden twice. I can't imagine any of them defy Trump
by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 7, 2022 10:34 AM |
R17 the latest is that Republicans should take the House easily worth about a 20 seat cushion. The Senate will be close, there is a small chance of Dems retaining a 50-50 split but the smart money is on Republicans ending up with control of both houses of congress.

R21 Is this coming from a tarot reading or something?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 7, 2022 10:41 AM |
R23 There's no quote or context given in the article. Do they think he literally called politicians on the phone and asked them this? Who, when... and how does Roliing Stone know about it?
[Quote]DONALD TRUMP IS calling his top allies in Congress to push for details on their plans for impeaching President Joe Biden and top administration officials, two sources with knowledge of the conversations tell Rolling Stone.
[Quote]Specifically, Trump in recent months has repeatedly asked “how many” times Republicans plan to impeach the president if they take control of the House, the sources said. He has also, the sources said, asked about what they would do to impeach certain high-ranking Biden administration officials. Trump’s questions have touched on potential timelines for any potential impeachment inquiries, as well as on how much support impeachment has in the Republican conference.
The way this is phrased makes me suspicious that they're intentionally misquoting a joke, which would also be why they don't provide a full quote or any context.

I think it depends on where you are. In Pennsylvania we’re running behind 2020. In 2020, ~3 million mail in ballots were requested and ~2.6 million returned. In 2022 we’re looking at ~1.4 million requested with ~1.1 million returned.

Jon Ralston, the dean of Nevada’s political press corp, who’s always had an unerring sense of goings-on there electorally, predicts, with some trepidation, that Cortez Masto will win re-election (he has the republican winning the open gubernatorial race). It’s long been accepted wisdom that whomever wins two of the three of Nevada, Georgia & Pennsylvania will control the Senate.

Polls open in 3.5 hours here in PA. I am very fortunate to live in a state, and particularly in a city(Philly) that has always made it very easy to vote: Plenty of polling places in which we are handled competently and courteously; local rep offices who gladly answer all inquiries and just a feeling of positivity of things going as they should. I'm always first in line, and it will be a true joy to vote today to help crush the red wave that is being predicted, Michael Moore notwithstanding(I hope he's right)
My polling place is a senior center, and I'll be there later on today to meet up with some stitching buddies for our regular weekly get-together. We will be finishing a group project, an American flag, to be displayed at the center's Veteran's Day program. They are doing it this Thursday, the 10th, since they are closed on Friday, the 11th.
Everybody, PLEASE, get out there and vote, no matter which procedure you choose. EVERY election is important. We have to stem the red wave and prepare for a successful election in 2024. VOTE! VOTE!! VOTE!!!

The Dems need to drop the fucking woke shit. Defunding the police and mutilating gay children is not the way to go. Remember this if the Dems lose. Learn from it. People care about the economy, about gas prices and food prices. This should have been the message. Instead they wasted it on woke crap. People don't give a shit about anything but their own economy. Pushing the woke shit was a bad idea and it might cost them the election. Btw, I want Dems to win. I'm Norwegian and I'm a social democrat. However, these past few days I have seen a ton of people on twitter, young people, saying they're voting republican for the first time. They're all sick of Dems pushing the mutilation of children, defunding the police etc. They're even trying to redefine pedos as MAPs and banning the word groomers.

That’s a good opinion piece at CNN. I forget how disastrous Biden and Clinton’s first midterms were. Actually, I think the MAGA Republicans won’t do as well. Trump is a liability for the party. With better Republican candidates and no stench of 1/6, there would be a Dem bloodbath.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 8, 2022 11:47 AM |
This is who the Dems align themselves with, TRAs who harrass women. Is this the image you want for the Democratic party? This might and probably will make the Dems lose the election. Dems hate women just as much as Republicans do.

R64 If you want to put your head in the sand, go ahead. Everyone is talking about the mutilation of children. Transing minors is dangerous and the Dems are pushing this dangerous ideology. R61 Yup. And because I say this I am labelled a troll. I have been honest since the start about who I am. I might not be American, I'm Norwegian, but I'm still a social democrat and I pay attention to the elections because I want the Dems to win. I see the election from the outside and I can see that pushing gender ideology is hurting the Dems. I hope I'm wrong, that it won't hurt them as much as I think it will, but if I'm right, take it as a lesson and learn from it. Stop pushing this dangerous ideology. Start talking about things that actually matter to people, like the economy.

by Anonymous | reply 71 | November 8, 2022 12:07 PM |
I voted completely Democratic earlier in the month. It is possible/likely that early voters went with Democratic candidates (whether that is true or not will be known in the next couple of days). Conversely, it seems that Republicans do not vote early as much, and tend to show up in person at the polls on Election Day. My takeaway from the last few elections is to not despair at Republican’s seeming victories on Election Night as most states will not start counting mail in votes and early votes until tomorrow and the next few days. So tomorrow through the end of the week, Democrat candidates will hopefully close any tIght races or win them outright. Fingers crossed.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | November 8, 2022 12:23 PM |
Fingers crossed, but we have passed some significant thresholds on climate and debt that we are likely to regret, I can’t say that Democratic control would have stopped these, but the brand of Republican opposition has made any action impossible, It looks like a pretty grim future, even if we can’t yet imagine the political ramifications when these challenges turn into crises.

Ana Navarro was ripping Dems ("even on this network") who started the circular firing squad already, so she plainly meant Hilary Rosen who fired off on the weekend about how when voters are telling you it's the economy you don't double down on the fate of democracy.

One thing I will be watching for tonight (and for the next week if it's gonna take as long as half of CNN contends) is whether the Dem strategy backfires in those districts where they funded ads to increase the odds of freak Republicans getting the nomination. Ohio poll worker reporting in.
We haven’t been as busy as 2020 but we have had a steady stream of voters all day. Like all the booths have been consistently full.
The turnout is a bit less than what I would like to see but it’s higher than I expected for this particular area (suburbs).

Based on voter turnout in Miami-Dade I think we will all be shocked by how many black and Latino people are voting for Republicans this time around. I think it has to do with Democrats not being able to talk to minorities who are not college graduates.

IMHO, unfortunately, the Black turnout leans more to being low. Democrats to this minute failed to understand the depths of disappointment that is within the community because of Democrats failure to do anything substantive regarding police reform and voting rights. I don't want to hear that they couldn't do anything. Why not set up ad-hoc committees to work on the issues? At least give the appearance of doing something instead leaving impressions that Democrats have simply walked away. I would say the same thing about the Latino turnout and vote. When was the last time anyone heard about protecting/fighting for the DACA people? Very little discussion about immigration...

How measure what happened in this election?
Did Repubs gain 37 seats in the House? (The average midterm shift for "unpopular" presidents). I doubt they gain more than 20. I think the story not told well so far is not "oh there's a red wave!!", rather, "oh, Americans are weary of the Trump/MAGA nonsense." Biden has been uneven as a communicator, at best: worldwide serious inflation and incipient recession, COVID confusion, Ukraine war, perceived higher crime, homeless in the media... so many headwinds. Dems should lost 40 seats. They won't, the question should be why not?
Do Pete or Newsom comment on the "loss"? Is Harris visible at all in any significant way? Will Ryan, Demmings, or Beasley pull off an upset? The 2024 race starts tonight.

Florida has been increasingly tough for the Dems for some years now. Even in 2018, which was a good year for Dems nationally, was a disappointment with even long-time Dem Senator Bill Nelson narrowly losing to Rick Scott. I think some historical norms like how midterms go are going to wane as the political polarization hardens. There are a lot of Democrats who are going to vote D without any thought behind it no matter how bad the economy is or had bad their candidates are. The number of people who could theoretically vote either way is going to get smaller and smaller.
by Anonymous | reply 486 | November 9, 2022 2:22 AM |
A tidbit from MSNBC last night - James Carville said when he wrote a piece in WSJ last year that the Dems must preventively own the crime debate (i.e. vigorously deny and debunk the Defund the Police mantra), he was told "We just can't do that because the foundations will go berserk", and he named as example the Ford Foundation. Political friends of his were told same by Kamala's people and at a Senate Dem retreat, that 'we just can't do that."

I can't fucking do this every two years. Though, I suspect with the GOP in power, and that pivotal Supreme Court decision about the national elections coming up, things just may cease to be competitive starting in 2024, and the GOP will be installed by red state legislatures. That is the reason I was sweating this election so much- I thought winning the house and senate would help in that regard.
I can remember every damn 4 years- I had my favorite. Republicans, mostly until 2000. Then I woke up, and would mostly root for Democrats. The thing is, it was NEVER EVER this important to me. Whoever won, I would always think "We'll survive." I no longer think that, really.

This is hilarious because Krazi Lake is gonna go nuts with steal bullshit and nobody's going to fucking care! I never thought Arizona had it in 'em!

R555: 218 House Members makes a majority of the 435 total House memers.

I think just gerrymander gave Repubs the House but the number is important. Anything under a 20 pickup is pretty good for Dems.

[quote]Not sure sure DeSantis would appeal to middle America. Right now, he’s popular in Florida and the northeast MAGA love him
DeSantis tried to play kingmaker by endorsing O'Dea in CO who just lost.

Fetterman is looking very good in PA. Right now NYT times has him as over 70% likely to win.
God, Dr Oz losing gives me a boner.

I dunno, but with DeSantis and the Florida GOP refusing to let Federal election watchers in to observe, I can't be the only one thinking that the massive GOP wins there are ... not exactly legitimate. It's clear the GOP has their thumb on the scale in FL, OH, and TX. I don't think it's possible to argue that they don't.

[quote] If republicans don't pick up a single additional congressional seat they already have taken enough for the majority
That doesn't account for the possibility that the Dems might flip some seats.

Kari Lake went too far with theatrics. She is a cartoon villain.

r569 I think people, even some repubs, are so sick of Trump and his election deniers that they are sending a message. Trump is not doing well tonight

By a razor thin margin.
As disastrous as it is that they control the gavel, the real chaos will be the jaw dropping level of infighting buffoonery (that the rest of us will unfortunately be subjected to)
by Anonymous | reply 578 | November 9, 2022 2:47 AM |
No one thought they would get a veto-proof majority though. They will do well in the House races, much more than a majority. Senate is the question.

Kornacki just said it's a possibility that the Dems could still keep the House.

If we hold the Senate...if...the media should play this as the huge Republican fuck-up it would be. The President isn't popular, people are hurting because of gas prices and inflation and they still couldn't get a red wave.
I'll wait patiently for all the Republicans In Disarray articles in the New York Times.

Just go onto Facebook or Instagram and look at any of your deranged republican friends' latest posts. Already screaming election fraud for Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
I"m seeing quite a few "SELECTED NOT ELECTED" and am seriously considering turning in one of my Instagram followers, who is a friend of a friend that I followed back. Absolutely deranged Q nonsense and constant threats of taking things into is own his, along with this red wave that is coming.
Deeply sick nation - the only solution is mass institutionalization in comfy, warm padded cells and Thorazine drips.
