Well, from just my observation, Starz was really pushing Balfe at that time, and she and Tobias Menzies were unsuccessfully proposed for Emmy consideration, whereas Sam was sidelined - ironically when he did some of his best acting, so they got the publicity and the articles etc. As far as Twitter and Tumblr go, not that I read many blogs, a lot of the comments at the time were along the lines of "I can't look", or "I won't watch it" or "That was horrible" .There didn't seem to be much in-depth discussion of the horror of male rape, although a few did try, but then the scenes were prettified up.
