These DL threads on her are always something else (and I always seem to find them lol) but you’ve got to give it to her - she’s always worked and at her age is still working - and I don’t mean dinner theatre or whatever Sally Struthers or Joyce DeWitt is doing , but mainstream network sitcoms that actually pay $$$ - where there always seems to be a part for her. I likewise find her incredibly annoying and don’t understand how she ever became the lead in a sitcom for 10 years - but she nevertheless appears to be doing something right - at least according to the people that matter and make the decisions.

Happy Birthday to Linda Lavin ! She turns 85 today.
BTW, if you want to see Lavin at her very best watch the episode 'The Shower' from season one of 'Rhoda' where Lavin plays 'Linda Monroe' - a rich wife who was Rhoda's nemesis from High School. Lavin steals the show from Harper - supposedly, one of the reasons why Harper nixed their plans to have Lavin join the series as a recurring geust star (instead, they brought Barbara Sharma's character back).

Linda Lavin is hilarious in that episode--her facial expression after she drinks Brenda's cheap champagne is brilliant.
Although Dataloungers love to pair her with Bonnie Franklin, Lavin was actually far more talented (and also much more attractive). I always felt Lavin was wasted in the work she wound up doing. She had superb comedic gifts when she could play a character role, but Alice Hyatt was a very dully written character. And Lavin sings the shit out of "You've Got Possibilities" (a comedic song) in the "Superman" cast album, but she was awful singing jazz songs--she just doesn't have the right voice for jazz.

NYT on Sally Marr - "Is Ms. Rivers also a great actress? No, she is not. But she is exuberant, fearless and inexhaustible. If you admire performers for taking risks, then you can't help but applaud her efforts. "Sally Marr" asks her to dig down deep and dredge up some elemental emotions. Ms. Rivers backs off from none of them. In her portrayal of a gutsy woman who has hit the skids more than once in her 80-odd years, there is a childlike sincerity that exerts its own spell in the end. Between Ms. Rivers and Ms. Marr an understanding obviously exists."

"Fuck your feelings and your good taste - I want to be considered for every Angela Lansbury part in Hollywood now. I outlived that old broad and I'm fucking entitled to do any part she was being considered for! "
And if you don't have the balls to get me those parts, I'll find a real agent who will, you goddam faggot!

Some of the audience members who are seeing her in previews of her new off-Broadway show are giving her performance excellent reviews (seriously). They are saying she hit every line and got hearty laughter from the audience with her performance. It maybe worth checking out.
Aside from 'Rhoda', another series where she did regular guest starring roles one season was on 'The Good Wife' - playing a harried, over-worked social worker. Her scenes were hysterical - brought a lot of light moments to the drama.
Given the right comic material, she can be a brilliant comedy actress - which is harder than a dramatic actress. I don't think 'Alice' was the right venue for her.

Didn’t she play Mrs. Van Dam at some point?
by Anonymous | reply 156 | October 16, 2022 4:48 PM |
I saw her as a replacement in The Sisters Rosensweig (she played the Madeline Kahn part) and she was very good. Michael Learned played the Jane Alexander role, and was forgettable.
Linda mopped the FLOOR with her. And it’s almost like she took a special delight in doing so.

Did the "Linda in Wonderland" special precipitate her divorce from humiliated special guest star Ron Leibman, who forced to unbutton his shirt to the bottom and play drums in a duet of "We're Still Here"?

R158 I saw that too and I didn’t think she was very good at all. But I was a kid and maybe I would think differently now.
I also thought she was terrible (and terribly annoying) on the OC as Sandy Cohen’s mother dying of lung cancer. But I’ve enjoyed these clips posted here, actually. I sort of see what her talent is.
If she were actually pretty (and older) I could have seen her as Babs bitch mother in The Mirror Has Two Faces.

[Quote]Although Dataloungers love to pair her with Bonnie Franklin, Lavin was actually far more talented (and also much more attractive).
I wonder if those two got along when they appeared together on Hal Linden's (WHET) special. I can picture both of them being battle-axes to one another, with Hal wondering why the fuck he invited such calamity.

I like the idea of Lavin slamming Franklin against the ladies room wall with something like, “Listen, ya carottopped bitch, don’t you try any’a yer scene stealin’ muggin’ out there with ME. I know every trick in the book… cuz I WROTE the book! Ya smile, ya sing, YA GET OFF! Got it?!”

One has to wonder about her finances when she takes jobs at age 85 requiring the coast to coast travel during a pandemic. No wonder she got Covid.

I've been watching reruns of 'One Day At A Time' on one of the cable channels which broadcasts old television shows. I'm in the middle of season four right now. I can't believe this was a Norman Lear show, and I can't believe people thought Franklin was a good actress in this. Granted, I watched the show every week - it started when I was in middle school, and ended when I was in college. I didn't realize how horrible and cliche the show was.
I can't believe every male character on the show found Franklin sexy, and I can't believe every young male hunk character on the show found Mackenzie Phillips 'beautiful'. Phillips always looked like she needed a good shampoo and conditioner for her dirty hair, a facial for her dry skin, and a dental hygienist to whiten her teeth. And no way did Franklin come across as 'Italian'.

[Quote]I can't believe every young male hunk character on the show found Mackenzie Phillips 'beautiful'.
I remember her character being the cool rather slutty teenager with a heart of gold. Her beauty was supposed to come from within. With that being said, if Linda Lavin's interpretation of Ann Romano had slapped Julie, Mackenzie would've been truly smacked, and left bleeding.

[R175] Thanks for posting ! I never tire of looking at Sara Gilbert looking like a 'rebellious goth teenager' in her 40s. Osbourne looks like a ghost.
As far as Lavin spouting out all those statistics on women's wages - no way was this not rehearsed.
And '9JKL' ? Never heard of it. It must've came and gone in a heartbeat (16 episodes actually) - guess it wasn't the great sitcom they all thought it would be.

R178 Get outta here, wiseguy.
[quote] Lavin was born in Portland, Maine, the daughter of David Joseph Lavin, a businessman, and Lucille Potter, an opera singer. The Lavin family were active members of the local Jewish community. Both sets of grandparents, Simon and Jessie Lavin and Harry and Esther Potter, emigrated from Russia.
[quote] Lanvin is a French luxury fashion house based in Paris. Founded in 1889 by Jeanne Lanvin, it is the third oldest French fashion house still in operation. Here's an article about Lavin's husband Steve Bakunas and their life together. I already knew they had a place in Costa Rica, but I didn't know much about Bakunas.
I know from friends that have moved from the US to Costa Rica that it's a lot less expensive to live in Costa Rica, and it's loaded with ex-pats. Perhaps that influenced Lavin and Bakunas to move there.

Think about it - Bonnie Franklin should've been cast as 'Alice'; the perky, braless, singing waitress in the Pheonix diner with her 12 year old son Tawmee.
Lavin should have been cast as the divorced mother Ann Romano (at least she could've passed as Italian) to Julie and Barbara in 'ODAAT'.

by Anonymous | reply 197 | October 18, 2022 8:24 PM |
R197 It may depend on where her parents and grandparents originally settled in the US, and NYC was the first stop for many Jewish immigrants. Those that subsequently migrated elsewhere took their NYC accents with them and passed them along to their descendants. It happened to me! That’s not to say that Lavin doesn’t enhance it. The first time I saw a promo for the new TV show “Alice” I thought, “What is that NYC Jew doing waitressing in Phoenix, Arizona?”
