Trevor Noah QUITS The Daily Show

He says his life is moving in a new direction

by Anonymousreply 231October 7, 2022 7:43 PM

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$4

by Anonymousreply 1September 30, 2022 2:45 AM

Why would someone quit a cash cow?

by Anonymousreply 2September 30, 2022 2:46 AM

by Anonymousreply 8September 30, 2022 2:52 AM

Were the ratings down or did he just inherit a South African diamond mine? Because they're no other reasons for him to leave the show given its the best job he'll ever get as he was the luckiest fucker ever and only got it in the first place because John Oliver, Samantha Bee and everyone else in line for it fucked off to do their own shows.

by Anonymousreply 20September 30, 2022 3:11 AM

I’m glad. I don’t like the idea of importing some snide cunt from another country to talk about how shit the USA is. I have the same issue with Oliver. Fuck then both. Let them go back to their respective basket case countries and do that there. They’d both be run out of town on a rail for doing so.

R21 very Ugly American of you.

by Anonymousreply 25September 30, 2022 3:18 AM

Whatever, he's lucky he had it so long. Marginally funny and oddly unappealing. When COVID hit and all the comedy hosts tried to broadcast from home and/or without an audience, he sank. He just doesn't have ther skills to wing it on his own. I remember watching some of TDS episodes he broadcast from his home, and it was painfully awkward. Like a "flop sweat" situation.

by Anonymousreply 26September 30, 2022 3:18 AM

Bring back Craig Kilborn and Beth Littleford!

by Anonymousreply 27September 30, 2022 3:21 AM

I stopped watching The Daily Show when reality seemed more ridiculous than the parody, i.e., in 2016. It had nothing to do with Trevor.

by Anonymousreply 28September 30, 2022 3:21 AM

He was ok, but I think Oliver is better, and John Stewart is Gawd.

by Anonymousreply 29September 30, 2022 3:22 AM

Wish we could have Craig Ferguson but I don't think he wants to stay in the US as much as he'd have to

by Anonymousreply 30September 30, 2022 3:23 AM

Why can't John Stewart come back ?

by Anonymousreply 31September 30, 2022 3:23 AM

by Anonymousreply 39September 30, 2022 3:53 AM

by Anonymousreply 40September 30, 2022 3:55 AM

John Stewart really got high on his own supply after 9/11. The show got weird. I might write an intellectual history on the Daily Show. It has been a fascinating run.

by Anonymousreply 41September 30, 2022 3:58 AM

R33 called it. Read between the lines of the Variety article.

by Anonymousreply 42September 30, 2022 4:13 AM

Definitely agree with R37. In what country are multiple Americans hired to ridicule their host country?

by Anonymousreply 43September 30, 2022 4:16 AM

Wow, what is he doing next? Maybe a stand up tour? then an once a week show? Or is he going into acting? This is surprising!

by Anonymousreply 44September 30, 2022 4:19 AM

Noah is simply not funny. And kind of a phony I suspect.

by Anonymousreply 45September 30, 2022 4:24 AM

How did he survive so king? I remember the initial reviews unanimously expressed astonishment at how unfunny he was. Yet here he is years later.

by Anonymousreply 46September 30, 2022 4:28 AM

Don't most hosts/performers/acting sign a seven-year deal? Maybe he just fulfilled his contract and didn't want to renew and he wants to simply move on.

by Anonymousreply 47September 30, 2022 4:29 AM

Plus Samantha Bee's show was cancelled several months ago.

by Anonymousreply 48September 30, 2022 4:33 AM

It's amazing the grating Samantha Bee's show wasn't cancelled several YEARS ago.

They're smart enough to know not to ever hire that unfunny cooter.

R51, the post you reference was making a joke about a notorious DataLounge poster who overuses the words king, goals and mood. It made sense to anyone who knows that poster and his predilections.

R50 isn't stupid, but the poster to which he refers is that and worse. You're better off not knowing more.

Isn't he basically doing a show for Apple TV that's practically an exact copy of the Daily Show? Honestly, I don't know why he left the Daily Show to basically come back and do another version of the Daily Show. I thought he was done with that, yet here he is going the same song and dance.

Jordan Klepper

by Anonymousreply 62September 30, 2022 6:04 AM

I've been watching Jimmy Kimmel this week as since he's broadcasting from Brooklyn. I have to say his David Letterman interview was rather unappealing, however it was Dave who was off.

I guess the big thing now will be Noah's replacement. I do hope it is a white male, just to see Twitter explode.

by Anonymousreply 63September 30, 2022 6:05 AM

Noah alleges in the suit that all care he was given at the Hospital for Special Surgery "was performed and rendered in a negligent and careless manner, and constituted professional negligence," according to court documents.

In a statement, the Hospital for Special Surgery, or HSS, said the allegations are "meritless." It said it sent "Noah’s attorney a detailed rebuttal to the claims, which are meritless."

-He's an entitled whiny baby. Wouldn't be surprised it the allegations are meritless

by Anonymousreply 71September 30, 2022 7:13 AM

Very funny as a standup, too tryhard as TDS host. Good move.

by Anonymousreply 72September 30, 2022 7:22 AM

R37/R43 it's because the white liberals (who hired them) are self-loathing Americans. Liberals love to talk shit about the U.S. and relish hearing/seeing foreigners bash America, too.

Also, they have a fetish about seeing Brits/Aussies/Europeans cosplaying as beloved American characters/icons. Hence all of the foreign actors currently on American TV and movies.

In general, LA and NYC (center of U.S. entertainment industry) have gotten so out of touch with the rest of the country. Many Americans are waking up to the fact that the New Left has become very anti-America on top of everything else (i.e., wokeness, open borders). Who wants that running/representing the country?

As the country becomes more conservative in the coming years, you are going to start seeing a lot more nationalism. Thus, liberalism will be passé and these foreign hires will become rarer, if not personas non gratas.

I think Noah senses this, as did James Corden when he announced in the spring that he will be departing THE LATE LATE SHOW next year.

by Anonymousreply 73September 30, 2022 8:03 AM

He's being deported.

by Anonymousreply 74September 30, 2022 8:18 AM

USA Uber Alles.

by Anonymousreply 75September 30, 2022 8:21 AM

R67. The Hospital for Special surgery in Manhattan is where a lot of professional athletes go for orthopedic surgery; it’s got a great reputation.

by Anonymousreply 76September 30, 2022 8:27 AM

I want to lick both sets of his dimples!

by Anonymousreply 77September 30, 2022 8:29 AM

r73, liberals don't "bash" America as you claim. Liberals understand the hypocrisy of the idea of America and the reality of America. A real American would admit that this country, while great, has many, many flaws including a past built on the backs of genocide and slavery. America promises shelter for refugees and gives it but doesn't seem to care about our own citizens living in cardboard on the streets of our great cities. America promises equality for all and yet, women are still paid less, black men and women are still oppressed due to hereditary poverty and racism is still real. Gay men and women in this country are, once again having to fight for our rights when we were already granted them and women just had their rights to body anonymity taken away. A liberal understands all this and usually we are trying to make America better.

Your lot believes America doesn't need to be better. In fact, you think it needs to be worse for so many. It's truly sad how Conservatives think.

by Anonymousreply 78September 30, 2022 8:40 AM

[quote]while great, has many, many flaws including a past built on the backs of genocide and slavery

ZZZZZZZZZZ. Stopped reading here. No, the country WAS NOT built on the backs of slaves. A few (relatively) old southern men got wealthy from slave labor...mainly farming. That's it. The US was built by immigrants. Explosive growth occurred during the industrial evolution.

by Anonymousreply 79September 30, 2022 9:11 AM

I think it was a "mutual decision". His ratings had plummeted.

"Trevor Noah QUITS The Daily Show after 'wokery' saw viewing figures slump to around 363,000 a show - seven years after taking over from Jon Stewart who routinely pulled in an audience of 1.5MILLION"

He is doing worse than most of those awful Real Housewives shows.

by Anonymousreply 80September 30, 2022 9:28 AM

Time to crack a history book R79. Do your people read?

by Anonymousreply 81September 30, 2022 9:36 AM

[quote]Your lot believes.....

by Anonymousreply 82September 30, 2022 9:37 AM

Rumor Mill around Hollywood was CBS was circling John Stewart to take over James Corden Show. Maybe Comedy Central booted Trevor to get back John Stewart. JS was on Kimmel tonight plugging his ratings dud Apple show.

by Anonymousreply 83September 30, 2022 9:38 AM

Stewart ain’t coming back to late night on a regular basis.

by Anonymousreply 84September 30, 2022 10:34 AM

I met Trevor a few times and was disappointed. He was boring, didn’t come across as witty or intelligent. On television he looks pretty muscular, but in person he’s just doughy.

by Anonymousreply 85September 30, 2022 11:39 AM

I want him to sit on my face so I can tongue his hole for hours.

by Anonymousreply 86September 30, 2022 11:48 AM

The answer must be ratings. Why isn't there more coverage of his ratings? Zero mention of this in Variety!? It seems like late night ratings are down in general, but my impression is that his were esp. weak even in the 18-49 demo that counts so much. Trump was a godsend to these shows.

by Anonymousreply 87September 30, 2022 12:12 PM

He was fired for being a kaffir.

by Anonymousreply 88September 30, 2022 12:24 PM

CANNED! Unfunny.

I watched Daily Show since Craig Kilborn, and Jon Stewart got lightning in a bottle with the latter Bush/Cheney years. Gaffe after gaffe, and people were exhausted with the wars and recession. It was a great escape to mock our powers that be at a very stressful time (nationalist post-911 fervor). God I remember howling at the skit about Cheney shooting his friend in the face while hunting captured quail.

Noah comes in during the Trump years in a very crowded field in which everyone and their mother makes fun of Trump non-stop. He’s nothing exceptional. If he and the Daily Show wanted to be counter cultural they would be ripping the horrid, gaffe-machine Biden/Harris admin, but they won’t. What’s the Daily Show’s purpose then? More anti-Trump?

by Anonymousreply 89September 30, 2022 12:27 PM

[quote] My cousin is a surgeon there and he's brilliant. He's also gay.

Is he single, r70?

by Anonymousreply 90September 30, 2022 12:32 PM

Who cares?

Most people stopped watching the regular channels twenty years ago and in recent years people left and right have gotten rid of broadcast ( cable) tv altogether and just watch through streaming.

by Anonymousreply 91September 30, 2022 12:35 PM

Lucky guy. Made enormous amounts of money for seven years being barely adequate.

by Anonymousreply 92September 30, 2022 12:42 PM

Oh no, I forgot to ever watch this and now I won't ever know how unfunny he was.

by Anonymousreply 93September 30, 2022 12:46 PM

It's funny with comedians. The medium they appear in matters so much. Right after he started the Daily Show I saw one of his own shows when he came to my city. He was brilliant. Insightful and yet very funny. But I never liked him in the Daily Show. His delivery on the show is so predictable, always has been. He sounded smug, and simply not funny. (I do appreciate his outside perspective though. Same with John Oliver. Their perspective is often a better mirror on US society than someone from within.) Will certainly go to his show again. As person and comedian I like him, just not in the Daily show.

by Anonymousreply 94September 30, 2022 12:53 PM

I’m sorry to hear this. I like Trevor, he’s absolutely adorable and funny.

Jordan Klemperer or Michael Kosta should absolutely be in the running for the spot. Maybe Samantha Bee, but her show didn’t do well in the ratings.

by Anonymousreply 95September 30, 2022 12:55 PM

[quote] I do hope it is a white male, just to see Twitter explode.

Won't happen. See the last paragraph in R15's Variety link:

"Noah’s exit means that late-night will be less diverse, particularly after the exits of Bee and Singh and the end of the “Desus & Mero” program on Showtime. That dynamic could play a role in how executives at Comedy Central choose to proceed."

by Anonymousreply 96September 30, 2022 12:59 PM

Seems like the market for political humor is crowded. Do we really need a Daily Show?

by Anonymousreply 97September 30, 2022 1:02 PM

Someone gave me a copy of his autobiography. They couldn't make it past the first Chapter. I couldn't make it past page 2. Put it into our little free book house in front of the Local P.O. 6 months later, still there .AND I live in Woke central Hudson Valley.

Tried to watch twice. Unfunny, unappealing..Amazed he lasted this long.

by Anonymousreply 98September 30, 2022 1:10 PM

I do not find him funny or insightful.

by Anonymousreply 99September 30, 2022 1:17 PM

[quote]Noah is simply not funny.

I went to his stand-up act several years ago. A friend bought the tix and I didn't know what to expect as I don't watch The Daily Show anymore.

I thought he was very funny. And likable.

by Anonymousreply 100September 30, 2022 1:18 PM

His ratings became very low, hence his "quitting". I am sure he will be paid a large severance fee to keep his mouth shut. CC doesn't want to be seen as racist for booting this unpopular host out.

by Anonymousreply 101September 30, 2022 1:31 PM

Are low ratings (a matter of public record, surely) really not a good enough defense against charges of racism, were he to have been fired? I can see that he is quitting to save face and avoid being fired, and it's nicer for everyone that way, but that's different from saying they couldn't fire him without being seen as racist.

by Anonymousreply 102September 30, 2022 1:40 PM

I have a feeling his quitting was somewhat forced as a result of lower ratings and budget. Of course his ratings are lower than Jon Stewart's. Cable networks are not raking in as many viewers anymore as they did. Streaming was stealing them away. Throughout his seven years Noah was probably also able to negotiate a pretty hefty salary since he was THE face for Comedy Central. Then streaming and Time Warner Discovery came. Time Warner Discovery has an already established history of thinning out original cable content. Examples were mentioned above. So dwindling ratings, and too-high-salary for the host probably made them look elsewhere for someone more affordable.

John Oliver is probably next. And then they will both come back, either on Paramount or Netflix. I'm sure they're happy to take them on.

by Anonymousreply 103September 30, 2022 2:16 PM

Comedy Central is not own by Time Warner Discovery, R103.

by Anonymousreply 104September 30, 2022 2:18 PM

never watched this show.

by Anonymousreply 105September 30, 2022 2:21 PM

Not John Oliver too? Man.

To be honest, I canceled my cable services a few months ago. Strictly streaming now and I catch up on Trevor and John via YouTube. Hopefully Trevor can get with a streaming network because he is funny and charming to me anyway. Same with John Oliver.

What’s Samantha Bee been up to since her show was axed?

by Anonymousreply 106September 30, 2022 2:26 PM

I agree with the poster above...i cannot stand foreigners who come over here to tell us what the fuck is wrong with our country. why don't you fuck off if you think it's so bad? go back to your own shitty country and fix that first before you criticize others

by Anonymousreply 107September 30, 2022 2:41 PM

I was a Craig Ferguson fan and I remember when he started to make fun of hicks in the Midwest and South as part of his act - and I thought, oh no Craig, don't go there! Unlike Brits, Irish, Aussies, etc., Americans do NOT like to laugh at themselves. Or at least the audience for television at that time - already getting older and older.

And maybe an American could do it - but a Scottish man with an accent? Just no.

(I personally liked it but I was thinking of the audience at large. And he quit doing it and got sort of depressed or something... maybe he got a good talking to or was told he wasn't gonna get Dave's spot - and he'd always had a skinny production budget because of Dave's paranoia - thus the skeleton.)

Back to subject, I like Trevor but I detect some anger or disgust sometimes that is offputting. And once again, harder to take from a foreigner than homegrown Jon Stewart.

by Anonymousreply 108September 30, 2022 3:41 PM

[quote]When COVID hit and all the comedy hosts tried to broadcast from home and/or without an audience, he sank.

This is exactly why I stopped watching him. I couldn't stand to hear him call it "The Daily Social Distancing Show." It was just such a stupid, stupid name.

by Anonymousreply 109September 30, 2022 3:48 PM

John Oliver is critical of some aspects of US culture and rightfully so. No one gives him a hard time about it. I see what is going on here…

by Anonymousreply 110September 30, 2022 4:06 PM

It would help if these foreign cunts are cute but they are not, I'm not gonna waste time to look at these ugly mugs.

by Anonymousreply 111September 30, 2022 4:31 PM

Noah's handsome imo. No comment on Oliver - but I like his quick acerbic wit (or delivery when scripted). It doesn't have the undercurrent of chastisement I felt from Noah, if that's the word. He leaves me more depressed. Oliver makes it more, "it's just a laugh ha ha" (Trump, politics, life in general) He lifts my mood while Noah drags it down and I feel like he's putting me down (even though my attachment to my country is very tenuous)... though he's hot ymmv.

Rosie, Sarah & Wanda are smart. Oprah has the confidence to walk out to an audience and just force you to believe in her and what she's saying.

And when they pick someone, give them time! Though maybe Chelsea had time - I never figured out when/where she was on (I almost never watch tv)

[quote]Lucky guy. Made enormous amounts of money for seven years being barely adequate.

R92 reminds me of a featured RenFaire performer I saw in S. Louisiana 20+ years ago. Was billed as "Barely Adequate." Which was the ONLY funny thing in his act--which included his 3 pet white rats (they were funnier than he). After his act ended he tried mightily to pick me up, using his white rat in his endeavor; but my lesbian friend put an end to that with a quickness.

Re: Trevor Noah? I got nothing. From jump he seemed terminally anti-charismatic (much like RenFaire Guy). Then again, I'd tired of Stewart's shtick 5 years before he left.

by Anonymousreply 128September 30, 2022 5:56 PM

I think people eventually outgrow the "Look at me, I'm so clever" pundits like Noah, Stewart, Maher, Oliver, Bee, etc.

by Anonymousreply 134September 30, 2022 6:27 PM

R110 Oliver was criticized as well upthread. I find them both annoying and phony. Noah and Oliver just seem to radiate disingenuous moral outrage. Oliver makes a big thing about being some far left critic but he married some creepy military Republican. Noah will jump on right wing assholes but he himself made bigoted jokes early in his career.

R94 Are you me? That's totally my take on Noah. His stand-up is hilarious, but his stint on The Daily Show not so much. On YouTube, I stumble upon some Daily Show clips with him every once in a while and I might chuckle a little but it's never laugh out loud uproarious. I don't think TDS is the best fit for Trevor. I would love to see Klepper get a shot in the main seat. He actually cracks me up in that format.

by Anonymousreply 139September 30, 2022 7:08 PM

R131- A much more straightforward explanation is that his ratings are weak, he's seen what happened to Samantha Bee and he decided to get out ahead of it. He's already made a ton of money and became well-known and can tour and think about another vehicle. A lot of the MeTooing was by gross old guys with power like Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey or (not gross, but old) Charlie Rose. This guy is not at all in that category. Not saying a cute young guy can't also be inappropriate, but zero reason to jump to that conclusion.

by Anonymousreply 149September 30, 2022 9:59 PM

[quote]I have a feeling his quitting was somewhat forced as a result of lower ratings and budget. Of course his ratings are lower than Jon Stewart's. Cable networks are not raking in as many viewers anymore as they did. Streaming was stealing them away.

The late-night format is so ancient and Trevor is still young and viable. He will definitely land a huge deal with a podcast or other digital media, I'm surprised he did the gig this long.

I might be biased because I want to have sex with him, but he is extremely charming in addition to being handsome, smart, single, etc. He checks off a lot of boxes for people, so he just needs to find the right form of media and he will flourish.

Greg Gutfeld is now the king of late night.

by Anonymousreply 161October 1, 2022 1:02 AM

Greg is ugly but he's very funny.

by Anonymousreply 162October 1, 2022 1:03 AM

R152, I think the job of a late night host is to go after those in power with humor. To avoid the obvious Biden/Harris jokes is why they are not funny. Kimmel's propping up of a clearly declining Biden in that interview was sad. This is why Gutfeld is so popular ... every other host has left the field to him.

by Anonymousreply 163October 1, 2022 1:17 AM

TL:DR

He tanked the show. Stewart had pretty good ratings. 1.5 million every night even at times as high as 2.5 million viewers.

Noah, who is pretty much just a smart ass and not funny, has a viewership of 350,000. One FIFTH of the show before he took over.

So he comes here from his shit hole country after living a privileged life there and immediately trashes the US and becomes very rich. Fuck him. Of course he was about to get fired. Thet gave him a graceful out.

by Anonymousreply 164October 1, 2022 1:24 AM

All of you who find him witty or insightful - you know there is a whole team writing these jokes? Like for every other late night host?

by Anonymousreply 167October 1, 2022 1:27 AM

Johnny Carson would gently show his liberal political leanings in discussion with authors on his show like Paul Erlich but his humor was equal opportunity. His audience was the entire country.

Noah and the rest of them are strictly doctrinaire. Their "humor" doesn't aim for laughs. It is to be applauded and cheered in Manhattan, San Francisco, and similar markets.. Attacking and sneering at half the potential audience just seems like bad business but each network is locked in to it.

by Anonymousreply 168October 1, 2022 1:31 AM

r163, late night hosts used to make fun of anyone in headlines, not just people with power. The Trump era made late-night hyper-political. Now that time-period is hopefully forever behind us. If your audience was tuning in for politics, they are likely tuning out.

r164, the show will NEVER be what it was with Stewart. That is like someone saying a daytime host will be like Oprah. That era of TV has been in sharp decline for many years and it's not coming back. There is no "next" Stewart or Oprah. People have many media/entertainment options and they won't tune in every night at the same time.

R163, but does Gutfeld have a variety of guests on? Does he have a band? Does he do skits or other types of bits?

I don't watch him. I've only seen short clips where he is pontificating about something. It just looks like a regular Fox opinion show that happens to be on late at night.

by Anonymousreply 172October 1, 2022 1:50 AM

Whoever upthread said Wanda Sykes checks off 2 boxes....surely you meant 3?

1 Wanda's black.

2 Wanda's gay.

3 Wanda's a woman.

Wanda's also very funny and very smart.

by Anonymousreply 173October 1, 2022 1:51 AM

Greg Gutfeld has a huge audience because nobody over 50 watches late night programming. Those still alive who watch Johnny, Dave, Jay, etc. are all aging Fox News viewers who are very, very reluctant to turn off Fox for another station....unless it stars Tom Selleck or Patricia Heaton.

Also, Greg is perpetually irritated just like his perpetually irritated audience. Hence his high ratings.

by Anonymousreply 174October 1, 2022 1:56 AM

He just never registered. Jon Stewart registered as a cultural figure. Trevor was always just kind of there, barely noticed by the culture. I'm not sure they can do anything about that, but maybe.

by Anonymousreply 175October 1, 2022 1:59 AM

[quote] All of you who find him witty or insightful - you know there is a whole team writing these jokes?

That was made abundantly clear. Some of the late show hosts still stayed witty and interesting when they had to retreat to their homes during the pandemic. I assume some of them perfectly capable like Conan O'Brien. Noah just floundered. He truly needed that audience and that surrounding master staff propping him up.

Good riddance.

by Anonymousreply 176October 1, 2022 2:49 AM

They still had writers when they were at home.

by Anonymousreply 177October 1, 2022 2:53 AM

The talk shows that are 5 days a week are a real grind. I'm not sure someone like Noah had the mindset to do this almost blue-collar like job until retirement age.

by Anonymousreply 178October 1, 2022 2:55 AM

John Stewart....Come Back!!!

by Anonymousreply 179October 1, 2022 2:56 AM

r178 it is a grind, and cable is an extremely fickle format. There are so many people to please. Think about Dave Chappelle who folded under pressure from that network. Noah did it for 7 years, which is a long time in TV, especially cable. Chelsea Handler's E! show was also on the air for 7 years, before she folded. That is a good run, and it wouldn't make sense for him to stay in that TV format being a younger person.

People also need to remember that Noah has been at the helm for the duration the tumultuous race protests in the U.S. in the late 2010s and early 20s. To me that was the area he handled best.

by Anonymousreply 180October 1, 2022 3:22 AM

by Anonymousreply 182October 1, 2022 3:47 AM

Wow. I can't believe people on here are complaining about John Oliver. The show is brilliant and has won the Emmy practically every year it's been on. Trevor Noah isn't funny. And he laughs at all his awful jokes. I stopped watching after the first episode I saw. Thank god he's leaving.

by Anonymousreply 183October 1, 2022 3:54 AM

He probably wants to do an once a week show. Also, do some stand up. Or he wants to do acting? He got me through the nightmare of trump and Covid.

by Anonymousreply 184October 1, 2022 3:56 AM

I do like John Oliver too, but I do admit he stays in his lane a little too much sometimes. There are actually things to laugh at on the left, including Trans stuff, but I know he never, ever, never, ever will. It always has to be from the exact same perspective every single time. The Right is largely shit, that much is true, but I wouldn't mind him expanding his horizons a little bit sometimes. Tavistock was tailor made for the John Oliver treatment, but of course, it would never ever happen.

by Anonymousreply 185October 1, 2022 3:58 AM

John Oliver is smug and unfunny. Also, why is he always shouting?

by Anonymousreply 186October 1, 2022 4:00 AM

r79 Not sure where you are getting your "facts:". You can't just say stuff.

The top 1 percent of the South you speak of were fabulously wealthy - three times wealthier than the top 1 percent of the North. However, the early years of the country, the first half of the 1800's, were all about the South, mainly cotton. In 1817, Mississippi was the wealthiest state in the USA.

What you speak of - the industrialization of the North, and it's affluence, came later. The historical revisionism you are describing is a way right leaning conservative American historians have of erasing a bit of history that is unpleasant and embarrassing. Without slavery there would be no economy in the South, and without the South, the USA would have never developed into what it is now. Therefore, it is not incorrect to say the USA was built on slavery. Very literally built in the early years, before 1850, and later as established infrastructure and institutions built during this period (legal system, educational system, etc.).

by Anonymousreply 187October 1, 2022 4:19 AM

the Right really, really, really misses slavery. They love that shit. They wish they could have it, now and forever. They will settle for wage slavery, but they really truly deep down crave the real thing. It's where the modern American Right is heading, if they can get away with it.

by Anonymousreply 188October 1, 2022 4:24 AM

This show had a season for a reason. It was post 9/11 Bush era pro war idiocy. It's no longer funny, it's no longer enjoyable. Time to move on because I sometimes feel like that show was the worst thing to happen to both comedy and journalism.

by Anonymousreply 189October 1, 2022 4:58 AM

John Oliver shouldn't even be considered a talk show host. His show is only 1x week and has a completely different format. It's like a comedic version of 60 Minutes.

The Daily Show isn't a talk show either so I can see how someone isn't going to do it forever. The Daily Show just seems like a ripoff of SNL's Weekend Update.

by Anonymousreply 190October 1, 2022 5:23 AM

Oh come on r190. Although it has changed a lot with Trevor, under John Stewart it was very much a cultural touchstone. Wingnuts hated it, but it doesn't change the fact that it really was a big deal. Now, it's just a meh. Not sure they can revive it at all, but who knows.

by Anonymousreply 191October 1, 2022 5:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 194October 1, 2022 5:32 AM

R191, I agree it was a big deal but it's not something someone would want to do forever.

I remember when John had Jimmy Fallon on and he was remarking how Fallon's show was just about having fun. I think John just got burned out by dealing with real life topics all the time and that's not something that someone who is comedian can do until they retire. Meanwhile, John was pointing out that Fallon was dressing up as Neil Young to sing with Bruce Springsteen.

by Anonymousreply 199October 1, 2022 12:17 PM

Another thing about Noah is that he’s young. I think his relative youth has made his career more challenging because he is working with people that have had nighttime shows for years and John Stewart was on MTV before that

by Anonymousreply 200October 1, 2022 12:30 PM

I enjoyed his autobiography and he is funny as a stand up. I never watched his show because he wasn’t funny. John Oliver is smug and pandering. Which is what happened to Jon Stewart at the end.

Unless they find someone who will skewer both sides and is funny I won’t watch. But ultimately this type of show has had its day. Hood luck Trevor!

[quote] the Right really, really, really misses slavery. They love that shit. They wish they could have it, now and forever. They will settle for wage slavery.

That is such an unfortunate statement. It's why things can't get better. Like things aren't bad enough, you assume things out of nothing (I ever heard or read from anyone that they wanted actual slavery back). When you hyperbole the current bad situation you're only making it worse. You should know that at some point you will have to work with the right or their center right friends in order to improve things. Villifying the ultra right will not do anything. We already know they're bad. Go and find a way to improve, not make it worse. Thanks!

by Anonymousreply 204October 1, 2022 3:05 PM

R200, I don't agree that his youth was the problem. Conan was a writer and was around 30 when he got his first hosting job. Fallon was 33 when he got his first hosting job.

Also, Noah didn't lack hosting experience. According to his Wikipedia, his career started in 2002 when he was 18:

"Noah began his career in South Africa in 2002. He had several hosting roles with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and was the runner-up in the fourth season of South Africa's iteration of Strictly Come Dancing in 2008. From 2010 to 2011, he hosted the late-night talk show Tonight with Trevor Noah, which he created and aired on M-Net and DStv."

I think the format was a big part of the problem as as R189 points out. They should have let Noah remake the show into anything that he wanted.

I agree Bootsy…John Oliver was good for a year then it became exhausting week after week listening to his grievances. They should change the name of the show to Shit John Oliver Hates This Week. It’s just not healthy to subject yourself to such negativity week after week.

by Anonymousreply 209October 1, 2022 4:08 PM

Oh God enough with Samantha Bee. She is like this century's Bonnie Hunt.

by Anonymousreply 210October 1, 2022 4:11 PM

He quit for the same reason that James Corden quit--low ratings.

Damn! Stephanie Ruhle is kicking ass on MSNBC since she replaced Brian Williams. She gets twice as many viewers as Don Lemon at CNN. She's almost beating Jimmy Fallon!

by Anonymousreply 211October 1, 2022 4:18 PM

Stephanie Ruhle is a Wall Street conservative. Makes sense she decent ratings like Gutfeld since there is less choice of shows for conservative viewers.

by Anonymousreply 212October 1, 2022 4:21 PM

1. Yes, it was ratings.

2. The demo matters and the Gutfeld booster(s) don't post his ratings in that 18-49 category, because he is not as strong there. Of course when almost every other host is liberal or apolitical (Fallon) there are going to be people who want someone who agrees with them.

3. Noah is cute and charming. People like that don't usually become comedians, because they don't need to, so it's interesting he went that way. He already made a mint and will find other things to do.

4. Samantha Bee had terrible ratings too! That's why HER show ended. Why would anyone think they would replace him with her? Do they think her show was destroyed by a tropical storm or something?

5. Late night is polarized because the country and culture are polarized. It's a business and if someone could make more money being down the middle like Johnny Carson was, someone would be doing it. BTW, according to his lawyer/business advisor Henry Bushkin Carson, was a moderate Republican. (Not a surprise for a WASP son of a utility executive from Nebraska.) But people could watch and mostly not know where he was coming from except being vaguely socially liberal.

by Anonymousreply 213October 1, 2022 5:41 PM

How do we know they didn’t encourage him to leave? His ratings declined every year from the year he took over from Stewart. It was down to about 5.2 this year.

by Anonymousreply 214October 1, 2022 6:15 PM

r214 I dont think it matters; it seems like it was a mutually beneficial move for both Noah and network. As has been said many times, the show's format is now stale, its been going on since the 2000s and its time to reinvent. Noah is an industry favorite and not being confined to this show means more opportunities for him.

by Anonymousreply 215October 1, 2022 6:35 PM

I'm not calling any of you racist, but I do believe consciously or subconsciously you just prefer getting your liberal and progressive news and commentary from white people. Because Trevor's show kept the basic spirit of The Daily Show. A humorous spin on the news of the day. Trevor is biracial, but he brought in more black and brown correspondents and writers. They were talking the same talk, I'm just not sure how Trevor ruined the show.

And for the poster above Paramount/CBS owns Comedy Central - not NBC.

by Anonymousreply 216October 1, 2022 7:34 PM

R216 well if it makes any difference, I don't like Oliver or Noah and thought Stewart was very lame towards the end. I can't speak for everyone else.

by Anonymousreply 217October 1, 2022 7:38 PM

r206 shows the guy's ratings were even smaller than Don Lemon. That's really bottom of the barrel.

[quote] That is such an unfortunate statement. It's why things can't get better.

So you're not calling us racist, but you still think we are. Who is 'you'? And what did we say to make you believe that color was our deciding factor? See my question as a genuine concern about the language we (sub-) consciously used that made you associate a post to racial bias.

by Anonymousreply 219October 1, 2022 8:04 PM

I didn't call you racist, because I don't think you're racist. Don't get bent out of shape. Noah's take on the news, can make some people uncomfortable when coming from someone nonwhite. You see it all the time.

by Anonymousreply 220October 1, 2022 8:10 PM

R220, it's not about nonwhite. I don't get the obsession with race. It's about someone who was nonAmerican. Who literally just got here and started trashing the country that would make him rich.
