Murphy's writing only sucks when he doesn't have a "spine" to the story. That usually leads him to go wild and throw in either too much or not enough.
The true story here has been documented over and over again. He can't screw this up.
I'm sure it will actually be good.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | September 24, 2022 8:53 PM |
R2 This true crime story doesn't really have a spine though: it's a mystery that was never solved. I expect Murphy to play it straight at first, then choose one of the many theories and go off the rails with it.

Jennifer Coolidge looks like a ripe WASP peach in this and it seems from the preview that her character is multi dimensional.

R7 Now THAT mystery is one with enough conflict to make a movie out of even though it was never solved.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 25, 2022 12:36 PM |
The story is creepy and interesting, but there's not enough material to sustain an entire miniseries. So I hope they go wild and campy with it. Artistic license.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 26, 2022 12:01 AM |
I don’t see the big mystery.

R10 I doubt it follows what really happened. Nothing bad actually happened to the real people behind being spooked and harassed right? That isnt scary enough for a show.

Two thoughts: 1) Will watch for Margo Martindale, who elevates everything she’s in.
2) These Ryan Murphy horror projects always disappoint. They start with a concept that they really haven’t fleshed out, Ryan works on the first couple of show and moves on, and it always peters out.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 26, 2022 4:16 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 14, 2022 3:43 AM |
Four minutes in and Mia Farrow looking like she came from an audition for an ‘autistic Wednesday Addams’ really set the tone of where this is going.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 14, 2022 3:57 AM |
I think the only reason Mia is there is to give the spook factor of Rosemary and those other chiller movies she made, she’s a short cut for the audience to think something creepy is going on.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 14, 2022 4:04 AM |

The father pretty much outted himself as the watcher when the neighbors caught him sending them anonymous letters. The family couldn’t afford the home- planned on dividing into two lots to sell at a profit and quickly learned they couldn’t. By then it was too late to back out. It was a creepy story until these details became known.

It’s got Bobby Cannavale so unfortunately it’s a no for me. I’d really love to see it though but there’s something about the guy that I find so grating and irritating that I can’t watch him. I’m sure he’s a great guy in person but his hamfisted scene-chewing is too predictable and too much to sit through.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 14, 2022 12:45 PM |
Is ham fisted, scene-chewing exactly what one wants in a horror show?
by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 14, 2022 12:49 PM |
Hmm, maybe in a GOOD horror movie r57, like in the classics. But reading the review of the show that somebody posted earlier, it really does seem like Bobby Cannavale is box office poison. Nothing he’s end seems to succeed. My first time ever seeing him was on Boardwalk Empire, knew nothing about the guy and I remember eventually fast forwarding through his scenes. He loves playing “rage”. I don’t think he takes any role where he can’t explode into a dramatic fit of rage. And his contract must include that his hair be allowed to fall into his raging face as he rages and shakes his fist, all while sweat, spittle and drool drip from his face. LOL I swear, check out everything he’s in and there’s probably at least one of those scenes in it.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | October 14, 2022 1:02 PM |
If Bobby is bad it’s because he’s carrying the dead weight of that shew wife Rose and not with his soulmate Sutton.

by Anonymous | reply 66 | October 14, 2022 4:32 PM |
Cannavale looks a lot older in this than he’s looked in recent things.
This is just silliness. Murphy and Brennan come up with half-baked concepts and add some silly elements and it just doesn’t work. Mia’s character and her husband are so over the top that it’s distracting instead of fun.

It's OK when it could have been - well probably no more than good. It actually merges two stories (both of which took place in Westfield, NJ). One is the John Lister murders (which really happened - he was caught after his story was broadcast on America's Most Wanted) and the story of The Watcher, which may have been a hoax.

Why couldn't they have Ronan Farrow play Jasper? They missed a great opportunity!
by Anonymous | reply 93 | October 16, 2022 8:02 AM |
This miniseries is genuinely as well ironically enjoyable.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | October 16, 2022 10:15 AM |
Naomi was always wearing white or gray and Bobby tan or beige. Was there any symbolism to that?
by Anonymous | reply 95 | October 16, 2022 12:05 PM |
I liked the John List allusion. I saw a t.v. movie about him years ago, it starred Robert Blake and it truly scared the heck out of me.
Jennifer Coolidge is good in this. I'm one of her Lesbian fan girls. She was seemingly given plenty of room for improvisation and did very well. Naomi Watts and Jennifer Coolidge worked together quite well. She's really tall but has that big figure, you know- her posture is shot and she needs to work on her core strength and wear a girdle in the interim. Poor lady looks gigantic next to that wee Naomi Watts but it's not her fault and I would still tap that.
Mia Farrow just up and enjoyed herself. She just played right into the camp of it all like a champ. The braids, the monologue about the trees, maybe an unholy relationship with her dim witted brother. She seemingly adored her character and just ran with it.
Vondie Curtis-Hall's son is the alarm fellow. I'm old fashioned in that I don't think a 19 year old and a 16 year old should be anything more than friends. But, his character isn't truly ghastly I guess. I dunno.
Bobby C. lost weight. He's no longer beefy. He basically just waits for his character to get mad. There is no balance.

R95 Having known many potters in my life, lighter colors usually better hide when you get clay on you than darker colors where it stands out. But I think we’ve only seen one scene of her at the wheel and I’m not sure if she has a studio somewhere else, because you would think the basement would be where they would set up one or a She Shed on the property.
I had to laugh at the gallery owner saying they would throw up another exhibition of her work in a month. First of all she hasn’t been making any new pots since the move that I can tell, and gallery exhibition schedules are set years in advance. So, beyond getting her clothes right, they don’t seem to have had an actual artist consultant look at the script.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | October 16, 2022 1:46 PM |
Watched it. Didn’t like it. Skip it.
R95 I did notice Naomi was always dressed in white or ivory. She *spoiler spoiler* looked like a freaking ghost when she went to visit Jennifer Coolidge after she bought the house and was leaning up against the wall. That was kind of creepy.
Margo Martindale and Richard Kind were obnoxious as fuck during the arugula scene. I would hate neighbors like that. Stay the hell off my lawn.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | October 16, 2022 8:28 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 111 | October 17, 2022 5:05 AM |
Everyone who ever lived in or next to that house becomes a watcher, R111. You could argue the place is simply possessed.
By the way, about Theodora... I have always liked Noma Dumezweni, for her beautiful speech and the understated energy she brings to a scene.
BUT.. it struck me as a bit odd that Theodora never once explains why she, clearly a Brit, would be traipsing around New Jersey as a retired jazz singer cum detective. It's as if we're all supposed to simply ignore her very English accent.

R113 I didn't understand that scene either, as this was the only time a resident was directly confronted with (one of) the Watcher(s). Was it Nora, taking revenge for the many times Karen spoke so condescending about the murder of the ferret? That seems too dark a turn.
R115 that entire storyline was so far-fetched, I kept expecting them to reveal it was a doctored video. Husband sleeps all alone in that enormous house, and doesn't wake up when someone enters his bed, tugs the covers, strokes his face.. Sure!

Jasper was played by Terry Kinney. I know him as McManus the prison warden or whatever on OZ.

by Anonymous | reply 126 | October 18, 2022 2:02 AM |
I’d add Coolidge to that, the three of them played it for camp, like Gina Gershon in Showgirls. Watts & Cannavale emulated Elizabeth Berkeley, too serious& literal.

At one point I thought that Bobby Cannavales character was going to turn into Jack from the shining. So many red herrings and then nothing. I also didn't really understand why the PI falsely took credit for what was an illegal act. That opened up her daughter, who would be inheriting her estate, to a possible lawsuit that could take away huge sums of money.
Does anyone else think that the daughter was the girl in the video in the cherry dress? She seemed like a little psycho. She blasted her own father with a false accusations on TikTok or whatever and told her mom she was capable of anything when angry.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | October 18, 2022 11:21 AM |
I doubt that was the daughter, R129, as the girl in the cherry dress showed her face from the side, and surely the parents would've recognised their own daughter?

OP- NOTHING on Netflix looks good.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | October 18, 2022 12:42 PM |
BUT have they informed and asked permission to the real families involved?
The serie is innocuous , it is watchable but forgettable, at least it is still better than most woke trash flops that netflix provide .
by Anonymous | reply 132 | October 18, 2022 12:50 PM |
R132 the real family was involved, on the condition that the show's family would resemble theirs as little as possible.
[quote] In keeping with their hands-off approach, the Broadduses had just two requests for the Netflix production. These were that the series would not use their real names, and that The Watcher's fictional family did not look like theirs.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | October 18, 2022 12:56 PM |
The real family that was involved got paid, which was always their objective with faking this to begin with.

Ugh, I didn’t realize the filming house is a new McMansion abomination, I’m totally turned off by it now.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | October 18, 2022 4:53 PM |
Binged it on Sunday. Entertaining but also infuriating in spots. Right out of the gate, I bristled when they put in an offer and suddenly "6 weeks later" they're moving in. Bitch, please. In what real estate world does loan financing, inspections, review of the contact sale terms, and escrow process take only 6 weeks? I was irritated from that moment on.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | October 18, 2022 5:23 PM |
To be fair, this has got to be one of the better-looking McMansions..

Friend of mine liked this thing and wants me to watch it but after watching a little over half it seemed so predictable to me. Endless taunts and teases from the writers of different suspect neighbors did it with Mia Farrow occasionally acting like a ditsy whacko with a witch-like 1600s outfit and bent. The guy climbing into the dumbwaiter kind of did it for me. Just 'oh no' the local nut who will be in and out of the house at various odd moments is nothing but annoying to me.
I'm trying to get back into it but can't even bring myself to put it on. I have trouble being 'the watcher'.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | October 18, 2022 8:04 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 143 | October 20, 2022 4:22 AM |
Ryan Murphy was smart to not have a proper ending because this show will be discussed as everyone will have a different suspect. It is one of those shoes that doesn’t leave the mind.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | October 20, 2022 8:45 PM |
This was house porn for me. The homes are absolutely gorgeous, even liked the smaller homes in the series....the area was very lovely, too. It was over the top, but good. I noted the John List reference and pretty much told the story, but a lot of it was embellishments. List never lived in the watcher house. That house was burned down to the ground, a year after the bodies of his family were discovered in 1972. I know the house wasn't filmed in Westfield, but I wonder if scenes were filmed there. The Westfield Diner was the meeting place in some scenes...at least it looked like it. The train station looks like the one in Westfield. Mia Farrow looked like an aged child of the corn...those pigtails! Creepy.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | October 21, 2022 12:38 AM |
Every character was a good suspect. **Spoiler!!** Don't read if haven't seen it yet. Theodora confessed on her deathbed...to give closure to Dean, who was so obsessed. It was only a kindness...not true. The house was an object of obsession for everyone. The open ended ending, not knowing who the watcher really is, is still true today. It's still a mystery IRL.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | October 21, 2022 12:45 AM |
Ok. Gave it another chance tonight.
It’s good! Man that Bobby Cannavale I like him. Now it’s on :)
I remember John List. Killed his whole family. I did not know he lived in Westfield. Boy, they must not like all this publicity. Westfield is not that big.
“Mia Farrow looked like an aged child of the corn”. Perfect!
by Anonymous | reply 147 | October 21, 2022 3:31 AM |
This just in, Westfield has changed its name to South Summit, NJ.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | October 21, 2022 4:28 AM |
I looked up John List. Said the guy in The Watcher was loosely based on former inhabitant of the house, John Graff. 'Graff's character and the circumstances surrounding his family's death are strikingly similar to those of real-life murderer John List'.
List was a nutjob. A reporter asked why he didn't kill himself and he said he believed if he committed suicide he'd go to Hell.
Yeah. Murdering your whole family was a loophole. 'Oh, you didn't kill yourself, you had a good reason to kill your wife and kids, got it. C'mon in'. There are great thinkers in the world and then there are the John Lists.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | October 21, 2022 3:45 PM |

That's is delicious R153! Mia Farrow and Jennifer Coolidge are friends now! Why not? Makes no sense on the surface but Mia Farrow was almost welling up at one point about that so it's obviously a real thing.
Ryan Murphy is derided oftentimes but I tell you all what, he truly appreciates ladies of a certain age. He's just sitting there in his fashion and letting the ladies speak.

I liked it quite a bit. The unresolved ending is more interesting with everyone potentially the Watcher is more interesting than a regular neat resolved ending
My problem is with Naomi Watts. Oh she's quite alright but she has such an uninteresting unmemorable face. Bobby Cannavale more than makes up for visual interest though.
And the other thing was the theme of greed in the letters. I didn't think anyone was particularly greedy, except for Karen.

R165 her woman in the window film got a lot of mockery. Ironically, I find her acting to be dreary and bland but that was one of the few films of hers I actually enjoyed despite all of the bad reviews. Her sad sack energy actually made sense in the role. She is massively overrated nonetheless.

I'm convinced that the historical society weirdos were the watchers. They honestly reminded me of the posters on the tasteful friends threads with all of their nitpicking.

The Watcher is a creepy show about the creepiness underlying the ideal normal. It is delicately sharp in its social critique.
Case in point, the Manhattan gallery owner. She is exaggerated, and she burrows under your skin. She's all about whispered ambition and manipulation.
Forget it is sold as a horror film, which it is, but it is more. I liked it.

I don't know all the specific details of the real case, but as far as the show goes, it made no sense what so ever that they supposedly had cameras up but could never seem to catch the person doing it. That right there says to me the family was doing it all along.
by Anonymous | reply 173 | November 6, 2022 12:22 PM |
Everything with this Ryan Murphy starts off promising and ends up shit. This was no exception.
I stupidly thought that this was 100% based on fact, until the John List stuff started, and I was like- THIS IS THE JOHN LIST STORY-
After that, it just derails.
Then, I googled this show and realized its 90% bulllshit and taken from other stories.
What a disappointment.
Mia was funny, and I have never seen Canavale show such a nice bulge before. Those were the highlights.

I think the daughter was a sociopath. The way she blithely responded " I know" to her father saying that he wasn't a bigot.
The p.i falsely claiming that she had done it made no sense. She would have to be worried that the family would sue her estate ( which would take money out of her daughter and grandchildrens pockets).

THIS! With the exception of Versace and potentially Dahmer (I love horror and I just cannot get through this which is a testament to the actor), this is always the case. I believe it's Netflix and their bloated episodic formula.
This would have been fantastic in a tight 2-4 episodes. I was completely engaged for the first few episodes, but towards the end, I was bored. I think Netflix deletes decent content for maximum episodes which lessens the impact. This was a throw away show that I won't remember. I subscribed this month for Big Mouth, Cobra Kai, and The Crown. Once I am done with The Crown, I'll cancel Netflix until there is something I really want to see.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | November 6, 2022 7:49 PM |
^I'm on episode 5 and I don't know that I'll finish it. They're pulling shit out of thin air just to make it longer. The "dead girl" on camera getting in bed with him while he's sleeping for cheap marital conflict has pretty much sealed it for me. In 2-4 episodes they could have easily told a much creepier tighter story. Old mini series were always 2-3 nights mostly. Only epics like Roots and North and South lasted a week.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | November 6, 2022 8:04 PM |
^ how did they end up explaining the dead woman climbing into bed with the dad, r178?
by Anonymous | reply 179 | November 6, 2022 9:39 PM |
I haven't gotten to the next episode yet but got really turned off by it. I do hear from other people who finished it that they leave lots of things unanswered including details around the "building inspector" who said he had spoken to his wife and she asked him to help himself to anything in the fridge when he was making the sandwich. Yet when he was talking about him he didn't somehow mention to her that she supposedly asked him to help himself which I thought was sloppy. I don't believe they explain the previous owner who was a talent agent and he ends up seeing acting in a commercial at the motel either.
I agree with the poster upthread that said the little bitch daughter was a sociopathic cunt.

I go back and forth on whether Bobby Cannavale is good looking or not.
Folks seem to think he's hot, but he just doesn't consistently strike me as particularly good looking. Sometimes in some pix, he looks great. Other times, not so much.
by Anonymous | reply 188 | November 8, 2022 3:02 PM |
I thought he was kind of hot twenty years ago. He didn’t do anything for me in this one. That said, I thought he gave a good performance in what could have been a completely thankless role (especially in contrast to Naomi Watts).
by Anonymous | reply 189 | November 8, 2022 3:09 PM |
Bobby Cannavale was much better looking in this than in Nine Perfect Strangers, where he appeared to be quite dumpy. They must have put him through some kind of detox/pilates/crossfit program in the meantime because he filled out those cashmere sweaters and Lands End khakis quite nicely, thank you very much.
by Anonymous | reply 190 | November 8, 2022 3:14 PM |

This was weird and typical Ryan Murphy excess. Everyone was the Watcher and yet no one was the Watcher. Storylines came in and were dropped without notice. Moments of Mia and Jennifer and Margo kept me entertained, otherwise I’m not sure what the point of the whole thing was.

There was barely enough content to make the first season interesting. It's so Netflix to make a sequel that will suck.
Is anyone else feeling Jennifer Coolidge fatigue? She's great, I love her, and in the right role she is wonderful (which is the same role she always plays). I find less is more with her. When she pops up like in The White Louts it's a wonderful surprise but I'm getting over her. She's like Olivia Coleman. Great at first, but then when it was all Olivia, all the time, I'm like enough!
