Citi had a great layout for Christmas several years ago but they ended it after economic crisis in 2008.

I'll take the bait. I collect in U.S. N scale. Primarily 1950's to 1970's era. I've been collecting for about 20 years with higher end models from Kato, Atlas, Broadway Imports, etc. No layout but that's something for retirement which is a couple years away. I do enjoy building and weathering structures in the meantime. It can be an expensive hobby.

But I have to concur with a post in the aforementioned closed thread that about 60% of people (primarily men) involved in any hobby related to railroads must be incels. A very high obesity rate, questionable hygiene, and definitely OCD. I get weirded out around them.

Why N scale, R7?

by Anonymousreply 8September 23, 2022 9:48 PM

I went on the Talgo once from France to Spain: fucking joke. It was a tiny train. Fuck the Spanish; their border guards behaved like fascists.

I started collecting Marx and Lionel O Gauge as a kid and had quite a large layout at one time.

When Covid came along and forced me to be at home for long periods, I decided to put together a collection of Standard Gauge trains… larger, more colorful and impressive than smaller gauges. These were made by Lionel, American Flyer and Ives from about 1925 until 1945. I’ve built up quite a nice group of trains and accessories both vintage and reproductions. I set up a floor layout at Christmas.

The attached video shows Standard Gauge trains running.

I have my trains from childhood boxed, HO scale. I want to get into model railroading as an adult, but time and space. I regret not buying the Chicago, South Shore and South Bend HO scale 4 car set with working pantograph 15 years ago… $300.00 at Park Lane Hobbies…

by Anonymousreply 17September 24, 2022 2:22 AM

I’m so sick of hearing about model trans, they’re everywhere you look these days!

by Anonymousreply 18September 24, 2022 2:32 AM

Here’s my favorite Standard Gauge locomotive and tender… the Lionel 400E Blue Comet. Originally sold by Lionel to very rich kids/very rich fathers around 1929 (the eve of the Great Depression.). Lionel reissued this train several years ago and it’s absolutely beautiful.

For train enthusiasts, YouTube has many BritishRail and BritishTransport produced train videos. Vintage black and whites with Black 5s, Bullards sp?, Swindon Works, 9Elms Sheds… wait the last bunch were RailwayRoundabout.

by Anonymousreply 20September 24, 2022 2:54 AM

Thanks for that, R20.

by Anonymousreply 21September 24, 2022 2:56 AM

R21, I took to RailwayRoundabout during Covid. I like the narration, which was a later addition and talked about the filming of RailwayRoundabout.

R8, I was given an N scale train set as a kid, so I stuck with it. And the quality nowadays is on par with the larger scales. Plus, space limitations. I’ve got quite the collection, but I’m gonna thin it out soon.

by Anonymousreply 23September 24, 2022 2:56 PM

A neighbor had an N scale train layout and he programmed his computer to run the entire thing. Guess that could be done with any scale.

There's a really large model railroad show in wMA every winter. It's very impressive, many railroad groups gather and put together layouts and the retail (!) man, the retail for all things train (model and real life) is astounding.

OP, what do you collect, model, etc?

by Anonymousreply 26September 25, 2022 11:15 PM

H-O is the only PROPER scale.

Anything else is blasphemous.

That is it. Got it toots?

by Anonymousreply 27September 25, 2022 11:19 PM

Paper fuckin' model trains.

I don't care if it was WWII. If I woke up on Christmas morn to a paper train, there'd be some serious cunt kicking in my house.

R15 you forgot Hermann Goering, whose entire substantial attic at Karenhall was a model train setup.

This guy was a weatherman on my local tv station for years. Now he's running for US House and he's a model train enthusiast. Quite cute as well!

There's vids on his Facebook page of the clouds behind him; some really good lightning effects inside the clouds, and the tornado rotates!

[quote] OP, what do you collect, model, etc?

I collect HO scale mostly European models (a lot of Marklin). I like Italian and Spanish models. I have a small layout because of limited room but have models on shelves.

I saw Christy Turlington on the subway once.
