If you live in Canada, they normally play Shapo's matches on TSN and TSN2 simultaneously for some reason. Canadaian TV often showed a Pospisil match over Federer.

Back from the Open, bitches. Here's a few impressions:
Prices are outrageous. $14.50 for a cup of tap beer. $18 for a 'where's the beef' burger. $6.50 for a fucking Pepsi.
Musetti is HAF. Beautiful tan skin, no body fat, sculpted legs and abs. Grrrr. There was a nice crowd of admiring gurls watching his match. Gasquet still looks very good and fuckable and still has that gorgeous BH. Miomir's legs are thicc and gave me wood. And a perfect ass. The sound coming off of Rafa's racquet is different from everyone else's. It's like and exploding shell. He practiced against two guys (Moya and Lopez) and he does NOT fuck around. Goes full out, with minimal breaks. All business, even while Moya et al occasionally laugh and smile a bit. Not Rafa. PCB has beautiful groundstrokes and watching him is like taking part in a clinic. Moutet is cute AF, has a fantastic lefty FH and GREAT touch at the net. Watching him is such a pleasure. Brooksby converted me to being a fan. Great mover, unbelievable counter-puncher, lovely groundstrokes (esp the two-handed BH) and a champion's will. He does NOT give up and keeps coming at you. Great mover, too, for a guy his size. He's very fun to watch. Porna is gorgeous and was in good form, but Brooksby did everything just did everything (except slice) a little bit better.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 2, 2022 11:23 AM |
^ correction -- Brooksby served quite a bit better than Porna, especially break point down

Nick Kyrgios cops the biggest fine of the US Open for outburst that saw him spit, swear and lash out at girlfriend Costeen and the rest of his supporters box - as bad boy and best mate win doubles match
Aussie firebrand Nick Kyrgios has been fined $11,000 - the biggest penalty of the US Open so far - after he stunned fans by spitting on the court during a series of temper tantrums during his win over Benjamin Bonzi on Thursday.
The $11,000 hit was handed down for unsportsmanlike conduct after the Australian spat on the court and was heard telling supporters in the players box - including girlfriend Costeen Hatzi - to 'go home if you're not going to f***ing support me' among several other expletives.

by Anonymous | reply 112 | September 2, 2022 11:48 PM |
R110.. rumor is that mcenroe has "dallied" in the past. I do know that along with Courier, over the years of commentating, has and to this day always remarks on a male player's body and/or looks. Maybe he's just keeping it real and confident in his heterosexuality?
meanwhile, once again, yet again, serena's opponents are PLAYING HER THE WRONG WAY! Trying to outslug her! EVERYONE knows the way to play serena is to junkball her, until she hits a error from impatience....
DO these players NOT get this or is it because they CAN'T Play that way? At least TRY to play that way, the right way to win!...
On a sidenote, I find it quite unbelievable that serena after losing badly to radacanu just 2 weeks ago is now playing this well? BULLSHIT that 2 weeks time she practiced so hard and got herself in SOOOO much better shape she is now playing the way she is?!
Has she been playing possum?
by Anonymous | reply 113 | September 2, 2022 11:49 PM |
How I so so want Serena to lose, so the obnoxious, half drunk fair weather tennis "fans", there to be seen posers, and celebrities in the stadium will be as silent as crickets!!....
patrick mcenroe : "there is Seal, he's a huge tennis fan!" Why because he attends the U.S. open every year with his free tickets and doesn't attend ANY other tennis tournaments the other 50 weeks of the year?

I don't particularly like Serena but I do have respect for her - she's one of very few female players still playing over the past few years who's the standard bearer for the time when the WTA was still a credible tour where you had the Top 10 populated by great and onsistent players, strong both in terms of their game and mentally. The past few years have been a complete shitshow with a bunch of flakes ending up randomly in the semis of the Slams and the least flaky one would lift the trophy and be a one or two slam wonder. I was watching that Seles/Capriati semi (1990?) on YouTube the other day and, holy fuck, that level of tennis was NUCLEAR compared to the shit we're seeing 30 years later.

as a Serena fan I'm just glad she didn't get double bageled by anyone at this tournament.. Given how bad she was against Raducanu a couple weeks ago that was a legit concern.
Tomljanovic is at least reportedly a nice and likeable person though she her choice in men is questionable. I'd rather Serena lose to her now than the annoying Samsonova in the next round.

'Pull your heads in': Aussie tennis fans LASH American tennis supporters that jeered and booed Anja Tomljanovic every time she made an error in historic victory that ENDED Serena Williams' tennis career
Tomljanovic showed incredible mental resilience to shut out the pro-Serena Williams crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York - the largest tennis arena in the world.
The Australian claimed the first set before falling into a 5-1 hole in the second with the 23-time grand slam champion riding momentum and the support from the parochial 23,771 strong crowd.
However the behaviour of the deafening supporters has been called into question by Aussie fans, with Tomljanovic jeered for hitting winners and booed every time she made an error.
'The crowd are disgusting. Almost silence and an undertone of boos when Tomljanovic hits a clean winner,' one tennis fan posted.
'Wow. U.S Open crowd cheering when Tomljanovic serves a fault. Pull your effing heads in,' posted another.
'Disgusting. Even when she missed a first serve, snd getting booed for complaining for the noise between serves. Typical American crowd. Lets go Ajla,' fumed yet another.
'Yeah all the rent a crowd are in the stadium. And norm don't support tennis. It seems to be getting worse each year,' posted another.
Other fans were not impressed with the antics of a clearly emotional Williams, either.
'Is Serena Williams incessant screaming at the net when she puts a ball away poor sportsmanship? I can't say publicly what I would want to do to an opponent who does this
However other fans were quick to point out Australian tennis fans have also tormented international opponents including world No.1 Daniil Medvedev and former No.1 Novak Djokovic. 'The Aussie crowd did that to Daniil in the final against Rafa. When he did a fault they would chant double and then make noise when he was tossing the ball up for his second serve. It’s beyond disrespectful to do that to a player,' a tennis fan said.
'C’mon people! If this would be the AO, it would be the exact same thing for Serena,' one fan posted.
'How many matches have [we] watched with Nick [Kyrgios] singles or Nick doubles when the crowd does exactly the same thing the US folk are doing for Serena,' said another.
Tomljanovic managed to stay in her own bubble and shut out the crowd during the win and was classy in victory, honouring the opponent she had idolised her entire career.
'I'm feeling really sorry just because I love Serena just as much as you guys do,' she said.
'What she has done for me, the sport of tennis is incredible and I never thought I'd have a chance to play her in her last match.
'I remember watching her as a kid in all those finals. This is a surreal moment for me.'

R197 lol those hypocrites were cheering Kyrgios on this past AO when he was being a jerk towards his doubles' opponents. Of course the crowd was behind Serena but they cheered Tomljanovic at the end when she won and then after her lovely on-court interview.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | September 3, 2022 5:43 AM |
really crazy scheduling tomorrow. I definitely would not have put Nadal vs. Gasquet as the primetime match. That will likely be over in less than 2 hours. I'll be surprised iif Nadal loses more than 7-9 games max. Alcaraz vs. Brooksby and Schwarzman vs. Tiafoe will almost certainly be much more competitive and entertaining.
Muguruza vs. Kvitova should have been on Ashe too. I mean Collins vs. Cornet could be a fun, drama-filled affair but in terms of accomplishments they don't come close to the first pair of ladies.
Sinner vs. Nakashima should be enjoyable too
Also interested in Norrie vs. Rune, Rublev vs. Shapovalov and Pliskova vs. Bencic

I've been wondering about the accommodation of players during grand slam tournaments: we know that the top tier gets treated to the best hotel suites the city has to offer and that the remaining players, the journeymen, get treated to a more basic stay. But what happens when a journeymen suddenly reaches the quarter, semi or even the final of the tournament? Do they stay in their basic hotel till the end or are they invited to move into one of the nicest suites and gets the star treatment? Anyone knows?

Regarding the R202 inquiry, I also wonder how the mid-range or lower-ranked players fare during a Grand Slam event. Don't they all have to find and pay for their accommodations? I imagine there are personnel to help secure certain venues, but is there free housing? Does USTA indeed pay for all or some of some hotel or housing costs? Is it on a per diem basis? Do the individual federations contribute? I also wonder about these things because I've often heard about the gap between pro tennis and golf players.
I often check out how much a player has earned during the year and what they'll earn for reaching a certain round in singles and doubles. For some, I imagine even the money in mixed doubles is helpful. You usually don't see too many star players in the mixed draw unless they've lost very early or there's some hit and giggle aspect to it. I also wonder about travel costs. Coaching costs. Taxes. I have my OWN finances to worry about first and foremost, but I love tennis, and wonder how some players stay afloat.

R187 she is not the goat...
by Anonymous | reply 209 | September 3, 2022 12:51 PM |
SO on ESPN the morning after Serena has lost, they did a "tribute" segment to Serena...
The question I keep coming back to is the whole "they didn't want you there".. "your rivals resented you" and other points of the narrative.
Just who are they? who are THEY talking about...
So the segment brought up the whole Indian wells incident when they were booed and thought their matches venus and serena were fixed? how many booed? were they the majority? was it officials? just the crowd?
her "body shaming" by wearing the catsuit at the french open? did the entire crowd boo her? Was it because she truly was body shamed as being too big to wear such a outfit or was it more that it was ugly and tacky? Venus had her wardrobe issue to at the French open when she wore the skin colored underwear (on purpose of course) where it looked like she was actually nude under her dress. I can see why people didn't like this as it was crass and shocking and poor taste....
their father drumming into their head remember "they didn't and don't want you there!" .. Once again, who is They? Are/were "they" the majority?......Sounds like brainwashing ultimate chip on the shoulder...Whatever works I guess, but was it truly true?
Lastly, of course, the segment had to say how she had to "deal with" passing chrissie, martina, and steffi. Passing them? Yes in some ways, but in other ways no.
by Anonymous | reply 210 | September 3, 2022 12:55 PM |
R186 lol if serena was white , fat frau with big ass and in the same time arrogant ,agressive tiresome bitch like BLACK person Williams, I think we would call her names as well.
by Anonymous | reply 211 | September 3, 2022 12:57 PM |
I remember watching that Indian Wells match on TV. The booing was pretty bad, plus there were racial overtones to a lot of it. No wonder they both skipped that tournament for years after.
I think both Williams enjoyed sticking their fingers in the eyes of the tennis establishment to some extent.
by Anonymous | reply 212 | September 3, 2022 1:02 PM |
Margaret Court is not the goat. Just look at her: long furrowed neck and green exoskeleton. She's a turtle. Which makes Serena the goat. Or Steffi. But not Court.
by Anonymous | reply 213 | September 3, 2022 1:12 PM |
Cornet vs. Collins could be interesting. Collins could blast her off the court or Cornet could use her cagey veteran ways to frustrate Collins by getting a ton of balls back, mixing it up with drop shots, slices, loopers. Either way Collins' head will look like it's going to explode.
by Anonymous | reply 214 | September 3, 2022 2:10 PM |
R211 Well said. Just search DL for comments re. Ostapenko. We here at DL are completely fair in our bitching!! No player who verbally assaulted a court official, in the manner Serena ( ps why is she now talking about herself in the third person? ) did, should ever be considered the GOAT
by Anonymous | reply 215 | September 3, 2022 2:22 PM |
R215 and it isn't just one time! Just at the Open alone, how many "incidences" has Serena created? When she is losing of course...
Oh, I forgot she's passionate and a warrior and a fighter and look where she came from and had to go thru! blah, blah, blah!
AS IF no other top player all time great isn't any of these qualities?
by Anonymous | reply 216 | September 3, 2022 2:28 PM |
Last year, most players stayed at 1 hotel, which was provided free of charge by US open. This year, I think the players stayed at hotels of their choice. Many players made arrangements with hotels to advertise their stay on social media in exchange for complimentary stay. For those really poor ones, I think the US open will tell them to stay at specific hotels as they may have negotiated cheap rates for them during their stay. it's usually in midtown manhattan. there is s a shuttle bus that brings them to the venue.

by Anonymous | reply 231 | September 3, 2022 5:42 PM |
R231 As a rule I don't bet on tennis because I know that I can't beat the odds. The oddsmakers are very efficient. They have teams of professional quants inputting various data to make them, plus the bookie takes a cut. I wouldn't be able to compete with that. The only sports that are worth betting on are less popular ones where the markets aren't efficient or if you have some kind of exceptional insight.

Nadal bagels Gasquet in a 40-minute first set…
by Anonymous | reply 278 | September 4, 2022 12:04 AM |
Gasquet should be ashamed of himself! What I mean is he was a true on the level of Rafa's rival when they were juniors and it was predicted he would go on to many great things and be a multiple grand slam champion! Instead, he seemingly never improved at all and more importantly seemingly never DID ANYTHING to improve.. the ridiculous serving motion of just put the ball in play, hitting the groundstrokes the same year after year, never changed his game at all and so on... Did he simply not have the talent or was he just that stubborn?

Gasquet truly has almost no "first serve". Just spins it in. Embarrassing
by Anonymous | reply 282 | September 4, 2022 12:50 AM |
as noted earlier this was a big flop to think of putting this on for a night match.
Gasquet's problem is his game just doesn't match up well to Nadal's. We know Nadal's high looping forehand is always hell to deal with for 1 handed backhands. That neutralizes Gasquet's game since his BH is by far his best shot. His other problem is his forehand grip is wonky and therefore can be easily attacked. The only 1 handers who really give Nadal trouble are those with big forehands (hence why Wawrinka has only gotten a couple of wins since his grip is wonky too). Another issue is Gasquet has an OK serve but not big enough to consistently get free points off of it. Lastly he never had the best fitness so even if he's hot on a given day, Nadal can always wear him down. Gasquet's best bet is to try getting in to net but the problem is as already described, his groundstrokes often won't be good enough approaches.
Gasquet really should have worked on his forehand and serve 10 years ago

Nadal is unusually chatty today.
In the interview you can get a real close look at his nose. He's lucky it's not broken or swollen. The dried blood marks look nasty and will likely take at least a week to heal if not more.

"A Russian tennis player was disqualified from the second round of the Savannah Challenger on Thursday for making a racist comment after the umpire ruled in favor of his opponent.
Twenty-year-old Daniil Medvedev thought he had won a break point against Donald Young's serve, but umpire Sandy French ruled that his returning shot had gone out.
Medvedev said Young and French, who are both African-Americans, were friends. He was disqualified mid-match for 'question[ing] the impartiality of the umpire based on her race,' the United States Tennis Association said in a statement."
Antisemitism:
"Daniil Medvedev was apologetic in his press conference after ending his Wimbledon match by throwing a handful of coins at the umpire's chair.
Medvedev, who beat Stan Wawrinka in the first round, lost to Ruben Bemelmans 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3 in the second round.
Medvedev shook hands with the Belgian, who triumphed 6-4 6-2 3-6 2-6 6-3 but headed to his bag, took out his wallet and began to throw two handfuls of coins towards the foot of the umpire's chair."

I actually think this is a ridiculous take. In every sport there's a group of top juniors who inevitably do not ALL become top seniors. There are top juniors who don't have any sort of decent senior career. There are top juniors who are journeymen who play challengers and never consistently break out on the ATP tour. There are top juniors who live in that random space between 120 and 50 play some ATP tournaments via auto entry but then have to qualify for other tournaments.
Gasquet made 3 Slam SFs, 2 QFs, 16!! additional 4th Rounds in Slams. He was ranked in the Top 10, he won a mixed doubles Slam, he won an Olympic medal, he won Davis Cup, he won 15 ATP main tour titles.
Not everyone can go from being a top junior to being Fed or Nadal or Sampras.
I don't think Gasquet is some failure because he didn't match his top junior peers. Compared to a incredibly small number of them (Nadal, Djokovic, Murray), his career is lacking. Compared to 99.8% of people who played pro tennis, his career is stellar.
by Anonymous | reply 305 | September 4, 2022 4:47 AM |
My conclusion is that Gasquet DID improve - massively. He left 99.5% of his junior contemporaries in the dust. That he didn't usurp 3-5 of them hardly makes him a failure.
by Anonymous | reply 306 | September 4, 2022 4:50 AM |

I think it's true to say that Gasquet hasn't lived up to his early potential - but then so few ever do. I think he's had a great career, plays tennis that is beautiful to watch and occasionally awe-inspiring. Off court he comes across as a humble, warm and generous guy.
He still, evidently enjoys playing, and can still pull out wins over anyone bar a select few. I think he should carry on - rack up those 600 tour wins (he's on 580) - and go out next summer in Paris.
by Anonymous | reply 311 | September 4, 2022 9:38 AM |
Happy Alcraz won! And in 3 sets! Wow! Brooksby can be a tricky opponent but he did it.
by Anonymous | reply 312 | September 4, 2022 10:17 AM |
R305 The problem is Gasquet is not some random GS junior champion. He was the top player and the chosen one (some experts say) to dominate the circuit. His rivaldry with Rafa was supposed to be epic, and it was when they were U18 and on chiallenger level, but once they become pro i think Richard crumble under the pressure of the french federation.
He never really improved and he never was a threat at GS even if he has a very decent career (the fact that Alcaraz has more big titles at 19 than Gasquet says it all).
I watch Richard playing against Murray and for three games he was a hitting machine, he totally destroyed Murray and show his true potential, but in the middle of the third game he started to fail and in the end Murray won that much with ease
by Anonymous | reply 313 | September 4, 2022 11:08 AM |
Being a top junior isn't a good prediction of being a slam winner.
by Anonymous | reply 314 | September 4, 2022 11:14 AM |
R314 t was not about being a top junior. He defeated Federer really young, his rankings were very high (even he had some injuries), he had the game to live to his promise, but he never improved

It's weird how all the French players are headcases regardless of gender or ethnicity.
by Anonymous | reply 316 | September 4, 2022 11:37 AM |
gasquet never did improve.. did he do anything that shows that? changing stroke production, improving that serve motion and the serve in general? lifted weights, got stronger, more athletic, used more variety. anything??...
compare him to let's say chris evert, when she was in the midst of that 13 match 2 year losing streak to martina, what did she do? she change rackets from her decades use of wood to graphite, she started lifting weights, running 6 miles a day, doing all kinds of agility drills on the court, added kick to her 2nd serve and used her legs for more speed on her serves, changed her forehand to more of a open stance and a weapon, changed strategy when playing martina for example purposely looping her forehand with topspin to keep martina back on her backhand side, came to the net more, and so on and so on! ALL things I might add when she was already 30...
I don't think anyone ever worked harder to improve and keep up with their main rival. And I don't think evert gets enough credit for NOT pulling a "Borg" and giving up...

Ruud is solid but you can see why he has a harder time on hardcourts against top players most of the time. His backhand is too "spinny" and just sits up, waiting to be whacked. If you're going to put lots of spin on your shots you have to hit it harder like he does on his forehand

very surprised that Riske is 3-0 against Garcia. Riske's forehand is quite wobbly and off grass every top 30 player can usually break it down. I'd only prove your point if I was "Mary"-ing about Kyrgios. I don't mind at all if he wins. It's not a ridiculous comparison to Trump, it's a comparison to people who like Trump for the reason that he bothers other people. Duh.

R395 In that case, then I think that Medvedev has the stench of evil about him and that he'd be an enthusiastic Nazi camp commander if he weren't a tennis player and didn't have sponsors.

Yes, enjoying people bitch and moan over shitty behavior on the tennis court is EXACTLY the same as worshiping someone who tired to overthrow the government and most likely sold top secret intel to foreign adversaries.
Can we please have one thread without mention of that waste of oxygen.

So do the trash in the stands KNOW they are trash or is it trash is the new cool and hip? I will say I can't think of any other major sports event in a stadium that has so so many "posers" and "wannabe's" besides of course the attention whores that are the free tickets celebrities. They, the celebrities care so so much about tennis, that they immediately left when a Serena match ended, never mind the rest of the night schedule.

FWIW, Coco GOAT says that Kyrgios is nice off court - always says hello and is generous with his time, hitting with her even when she was 13 years old, and another time when he had already hit for two hours.

R400.. true and he is always respectful during sit down interviews, But i'm sorry this does not remotely excuse his behavior in a stadium of thousands and around the world on TV for ALL to see, not just his private one on one with another professional tennis player....
tom cruise is very nice in public too and with interviewers (those who don't ask the questions that he doesn't allow of course)...

I like watching Kyrgios play, he's pretty damn good.

Danii beat Novak last year in the US Open final? How was Novak allowed in last year?
by Anonymous | reply 403 | September 5, 2022 2:05 AM |
R402, he’s got some great shots. But how embarrassing for Medvedev.
by Anonymous | reply 404 | September 5, 2022 2:06 AM |
R401 Yeah, it is complex. I don't like a lot of his on-court behavior either. The smashing of rackets, the spitting, the outbursts make me cringe.
by Anonymous | reply 405 | September 5, 2022 2:06 AM |
There's plenty of Kyrgios even in recreational tennis. I play USTA leagues and tournaments and have played plenty of opponents who were bratty, obnoxious, crude on court, but were perfectly amiable, chill, and nice to talk to off the court.
by Anonymous | reply 406 | September 5, 2022 2:07 AM |
I find his on-court behavior boorish, but it also fascinates me how he's able to expend so much energy on his outbursts then focus and play lights out tennis.

yeah, and he was dissing the Americans and said they live a different way in AU...yeah, you live in a barn.

Danii needs to see his sports shrink ASAP

Kyrgios v Nadal will be interesting. Kyrgios has flashes of brilliance when he’s dialed in.

NIck plays Karen next!
by Anonymous | reply 411 | September 5, 2022 2:17 AM |
Medvedev just stalked off the court, didn’t stop to acknowledge the crowd or sign autographs. Just OUT OF THERE.
by Anonymous | reply 412 | September 5, 2022 2:18 AM |
Is Karen pronounced the same in Russian as female Karens in English?
by Anonymous | reply 413 | September 5, 2022 2:19 AM |
Medvedev hasn’t been the same since he choked in the final in Australia.
by Anonymous | reply 414 | September 5, 2022 2:19 AM |
R407, Nick’s weird, meandering playing style prevents his opponents from establishing a rhythm. He didn’t pull his usual stunts during the Wimbledon final, and Djokovic was able to get a read on his serve.

Rafa can do that to one's spirit, R414.

Since Medvedev lost, there will be a new #1 after the US Open and it'll be either Nadal, Alcaraz, or Ruud.

R422 Niemeier makes me think of the Soviet-era statues that I saw in Budapest. Very thick and hale, the kind of 'maiden' that authoritarian states like.
