The Gays and Tennis Part 129 - Week One Continued

[quote] Bastards at ESPN switched from the Shapo match to the Serena/Venus doubles match. So much for eye candy.

Serena! Serena! Serena!

Sick of Serena coverage.

It’s doubles match.

by Anonymousreply 1September 1, 2022 11:23 PM

She's retiring after 25 year career and 20+ majors. I don't gt people being shocked that ESPN is making a big deal of it.

by Anonymousreply 2September 1, 2022 11:25 PM

they should not allow that horrible sands woman to wear that on TV, kids are watching!!

by Anonymousreply 3September 1, 2022 11:25 PM

I can't wait to see Nadal!

by Anonymousreply 4September 1, 2022 11:26 PM

If you live in Canada, they normally play Shapo's matches on TSN and TSN2 simultaneously for some reason. Canadaian TV often showed a Pospisil match over Federer.

by Anonymousreply 5September 1, 2022 11:26 PM

I miss the days when this was on NBC!

by Anonymousreply 6September 1, 2022 11:27 PM

Do Shapo matches take precedence in Nunavut?

Sexy Shapo moves to the third round!

He wins 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2

by Anonymousreply 15September 2, 2022 12:52 AM

Shapo advances. Yay!

by Anonymousreply 16September 2, 2022 12:53 AM

Shapo is sexy but so, so dumb.

by Anonymousreply 17September 2, 2022 12:54 AM

The ESPN app just served up a nice up-close, bent-over ass and legs shot of Shapo.

by Anonymousreply 18September 2, 2022 12:55 AM

Nice. Any gold blond leg hair showing, R18?

by Anonymousreply 26September 2, 2022 1:24 AM

Is the Nadal/Fognini match finally starting after this doubles match?

by Anonymousreply 27September 2, 2022 1:29 AM

Shapo is like the himbo version of bimbo Kournikova if she became a Putin-loving rapper wannabe.

by Anonymousreply 28September 2, 2022 1:31 AM

Shapo should pose in bathing suits like Kourinkova and have moles removed like Enrique Iglesias.

by Anonymousreply 29September 2, 2022 1:35 AM

Finally it’s happened to me!

by Anonymousreply 30September 2, 2022 1:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 36September 2, 2022 2:57 AM

by Anonymousreply 37September 2, 2022 4:18 AM

by Anonymousreply 38September 2, 2022 4:31 AM

That hit to the nose made me wince. Wonder if he’ll have black eyes tomorrow?

Back from the Open, bitches. Here's a few impressions:

Prices are outrageous. $14.50 for a cup of tap beer. $18 for a 'where's the beef' burger. $6.50 for a fucking Pepsi.

Musetti is HAF. Beautiful tan skin, no body fat, sculpted legs and abs. Grrrr. There was a nice crowd of admiring gurls watching his match. Gasquet still looks very good and fuckable and still has that gorgeous BH. Miomir's legs are thicc and gave me wood. And a perfect ass. The sound coming off of Rafa's racquet is different from everyone else's. It's like and exploding shell. He practiced against two guys (Moya and Lopez) and he does NOT fuck around. Goes full out, with minimal breaks. All business, even while Moya et al occasionally laugh and smile a bit. Not Rafa. PCB has beautiful groundstrokes and watching him is like taking part in a clinic. Moutet is cute AF, has a fantastic lefty FH and GREAT touch at the net. Watching him is such a pleasure. Brooksby converted me to being a fan. Great mover, unbelievable counter-puncher, lovely groundstrokes (esp the two-handed BH) and a champion's will. He does NOT give up and keeps coming at you. Great mover, too, for a guy his size. He's very fun to watch. Porna is gorgeous and was in good form, but Brooksby did everything just did everything (except slice) a little bit better.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 44September 2, 2022 11:23 AM

^ correction -- Brooksby served quite a bit better than Porna, especially break point down

by Anonymousreply 45September 2, 2022 11:28 AM

nadal is such drama queen..,

by Anonymousreply 46September 2, 2022 12:57 PM

R44.... thanks for your report! I had heard or read that a regular hamburger at the Open was 20 or 25 dollars? crazy!

speaking of shapo and shorts, imagine if he and the players wore shorts like the players did in the 70's! so short and snug they were basically daisy dukes in cotton/polyester! laugh!

Nick Kyrgios cops the biggest fine of the US Open for outburst that saw him spit, swear and lash out at girlfriend Costeen and the rest of his supporters box - as bad boy and best mate win doubles match

Aussie firebrand Nick Kyrgios has been fined $11,000 - the biggest penalty of the US Open so far - after he stunned fans by spitting on the court during a series of temper tantrums during his win over Benjamin Bonzi on Thursday.

The $11,000 hit was handed down for unsportsmanlike conduct after the Australian spat on the court and was heard telling supporters in the players box - including girlfriend Costeen Hatzi - to 'go home if you're not going to f***ing support me' among several other expletives.

by Anonymousreply 48September 2, 2022 2:09 PM

How you think ? How many blacks in Africa had to die to handle so many diamonds fo Serena's dress?

by Anonymousreply 49September 2, 2022 2:43 PM

What level of self-loathing do you have to have to be a "friend" of Kyrgios and put up with him? He is the worst ever. I hope he implodes today.

by Anonymousreply 50September 2, 2022 3:33 PM

Well, when you're only 21, you don't really have a job and he buys you jewelry and you're only a successful influencer because you're fucking him...

Kyrgios is mentally a fucking child. Dont support you? They are in your box cheering, right? He is an idiot as well as an asshole. I don't care how talented he is, dude is hard to root for.

by Anonymousreply 56September 2, 2022 5:17 PM

Thanks for the report back, tennis gurl R44!. I actually think Gasquet's improved with age - I like his scruffy, care-worn appearance. Looks like he's been around the block and would throw a mean (but tender) fuck!

by Anonymousreply 63September 2, 2022 6:04 PM

I fucking knew Tommy Paul would break back. Tommy has more chances in every one of Casper's seevice games, not so much the other way around. I think Tommy will win. He also has the home court advantage.

by Anonymousreply 64September 2, 2022 6:22 PM

Tommy’s mustache gets a big thumbs down.

by Anonymousreply 65September 2, 2022 6:49 PM

Agree with [R65] assessment of Tommy's mustache. Yikes. The ugly mustache is the reason he lost the first set tiebreak to Beautiful Casper

by Anonymousreply 66September 2, 2022 6:52 PM

Juicy Jack's having a bit of a nightmare. I'm typing this in the hope that it will unjinx him.

by Anonymousreply 67September 2, 2022 6:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 68September 2, 2022 7:03 PM

murray won the 3rd set

by Anonymousreply 69September 2, 2022 7:12 PM

Say what you want about Misery, he's a real fighter.

by Anonymousreply 70September 2, 2022 7:14 PM

Imagine being not only a grown man, but a professional athlete on a world stage and bitching, screaming, cussing out YOUR OWN box because they aren't cheering hard enough for you! WHAT THE FUCK! What is he a 5 year old?! Yes he is and a spoiled child... Let him work a "real job" and make 5 figures a year...

I would be embarrassed just looking at my box as a grown adult and professional athlete...

by Anonymousreply 71September 2, 2022 7:25 PM

What level of self-esteem would you need to return to his box after being yelled at once? Hell, I’d have stood up and walked out.

by Anonymousreply 72September 2, 2022 7:44 PM

I'm surprised with Draper. I thought he will crumble after losing the first set and start losing the second but he recovered

by Anonymousreply 73September 2, 2022 7:48 PM

This new breed of Brits: Norrie, Evans and Draper seem to be much more resilient than the talented but brittle folders pre-Murray.

by Anonymousreply 74September 2, 2022 7:55 PM

The guy I saw Matteo with is that guy in the baseball hat wearing blue hugo boss tshirt.

by Anonymousreply 75September 2, 2022 8:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 76September 2, 2022 8:04 PM

No, he's older, i wonder if that is his dad...I'm sure we will see him again since Matteo is going into the next round.

by Anonymousreply 77September 2, 2022 8:17 PM

R73 And after saying that he imploded and now Karen serves for the set

by Anonymousreply 78September 2, 2022 8:31 PM

He hasn't imploded, he's injured! Jesus Christ!

by Anonymousreply 79September 2, 2022 8:33 PM

And he retired. It's a pity but good tournament for him

by Anonymousreply 80September 2, 2022 8:41 PM

so sad for draper...

by Anonymousreply 81September 2, 2022 8:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 82September 2, 2022 8:46 PM

He implossioned.

by Anonymousreply 83September 2, 2022 8:57 PM

Moutet and Cachin are having a right old ding dong.

Even better; Cachin is manspreading at the changeovers, giving a lovely, extended view of his ample ding dong.

by Anonymousreply 91September 2, 2022 10:04 PM

by Anonymousreply 92September 2, 2022 10:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 93September 2, 2022 10:11 PM

Why do these threads keep ending so early before 600 replies? Not that it really matters but there's no notification in the previous thread.

Glad Murray lost. Not at all surprised Keys lost. Someone had said that she was going to beat Gauff and I just couldn't agree. I think Gauff fundamentally understands how to beat Keys. Paul got to a fifth set but is now bombing. Ugh.

Johnny McEnroe in bright red tonight. not bad looking.

by Anonymousreply 109September 2, 2022 11:13 PM

McEnroe is gay? I read something like that here on DT in one of the threads abot celebrities in the closet

by Anonymousreply 110September 2, 2022 11:16 PM

Can Ajla do it against Queen Rena?

by Anonymousreply 111September 2, 2022 11:40 PM

Serena is actually playing pretty well. I just don't understand where it came from. She was so bad not that long ago.

by Anonymousreply 112September 2, 2022 11:48 PM

R110.. rumor is that mcenroe has "dallied" in the past. I do know that along with Courier, over the years of commentating, has and to this day always remarks on a male player's body and/or looks. Maybe he's just keeping it real and confident in his heterosexuality?

meanwhile, once again, yet again, serena's opponents are PLAYING HER THE WRONG WAY! Trying to outslug her! EVERYONE knows the way to play serena is to junkball her, until she hits a error from impatience....

DO these players NOT get this or is it because they CAN'T Play that way? At least TRY to play that way, the right way to win!...

On a sidenote, I find it quite unbelievable that serena after losing badly to radacanu just 2 weeks ago is now playing this well? BULLSHIT that 2 weeks time she practiced so hard and got herself in SOOOO much better shape she is now playing the way she is?!

Has she been playing possum?

by Anonymousreply 113September 2, 2022 11:49 PM

How I so so want Serena to lose, so the obnoxious, half drunk fair weather tennis "fans", there to be seen posers, and celebrities in the stadium will be as silent as crickets!!....

patrick mcenroe : "there is Seal, he's a huge tennis fan!" Why because he attends the U.S. open every year with his free tickets and doesn't attend ANY other tennis tournaments the other 50 weeks of the year?

by Anonymousreply 114September 2, 2022 11:56 PM

spike lee is wearing the same outfit.

by Anonymousreply 115September 2, 2022 11:57 PM

[quote] Has she been playing possum?

Eet hurt so mush!

by Anonymousreply 116September 2, 2022 11:58 PM

I'd guess it's the home crowd and the fact that it's her swan song that is making her focus and play the best she can, all things considered.

by Anonymousreply 117September 3, 2022 12:03 AM

She done.

by Anonymousreply 118September 3, 2022 12:04 AM

well, well, that was a very good set from Ajla; impressed. Held her nerve, played well. But players can often collapse the next set so we'll see.

by Anonymousreply 119September 3, 2022 12:10 AM

"Berrettini to the umpire: "We play for four hours and two of them we're waiting for people to sit down." Worst thing about the US Open."

"Have literally just watched two people get up from their seats in the middle of a Williams v Tomljanovic rally and walk down to the front row for a photo beside the court while the point was still going"

by Anonymousreply 120September 3, 2022 12:14 AM

by Anonymousreply 134September 3, 2022 1:14 AM

She touched Billie Jean King's 'Pressure is a privilege' plaque before she went on court, and she said that she would try to follow Djokovic's advice of pretending that the crowd is cheering for her.

by Anonymousreply 135September 3, 2022 1:15 AM

Those dresses Serena wears aren’t just fugly, they look hot. Why does she insist on long sleeves?

The betting fav is Serena - 60% chance, AT 40%.

by Anonymousreply 146September 3, 2022 1:33 AM

I don't particularly like Serena but I do have respect for her - she's one of very few female players still playing over the past few years who's the standard bearer for the time when the WTA was still a credible tour where you had the Top 10 populated by great and onsistent players, strong both in terms of their game and mentally. The past few years have been a complete shitshow with a bunch of flakes ending up randomly in the semis of the Slams and the least flaky one would lift the trophy and be a one or two slam wonder. I was watching that Seles/Capriati semi (1990?) on YouTube the other day and, holy fuck, that level of tennis was NUCLEAR compared to the shit we're seeing 30 years later.

by Anonymousreply 156September 3, 2022 2:07 AM

as a Serena fan I'm just glad she didn't get double bageled by anyone at this tournament.. Given how bad she was against Raducanu a couple weeks ago that was a legit concern.

Tomljanovic is at least reportedly a nice and likeable person though she her choice in men is questionable. I'd rather Serena lose to her now than the annoying Samsonova in the next round.

by Anonymousreply 157September 3, 2022 2:07 AM

This audience is the worst. Rude-ass boorish assholes.

by Anonymousreply 158September 3, 2022 2:08 AM

they have been drinking...it's been a long night

by Anonymousreply 159September 3, 2022 2:09 AM

R154 He is! They are an incredibly attractive couple.

On a side note, I don't know if anyone caught some of the Garcia-Andreescu match, but on form alone, I can't see anyone stopping Caroline from reaching the final. She's playing unbelievable tennis.

by Anonymousreply 160September 3, 2022 2:09 AM

R158 have you seen the AO crowds in recent years? RG crowds have always been harsh against opponents of French players. Even Wimbledon crowds have now gotten very pro-Brit and loud when Murray plays

by Anonymousreply 161September 3, 2022 2:11 AM

Yes, and I'm hoping that Caroline will win but there's a long way to go.

by Anonymousreply 162September 3, 2022 2:11 AM

she's crying...

by Anonymousreply 163September 3, 2022 2:12 AM

Swiatek might have something to say about Garcia but yes Garcia is the hot player right now. It's nice to see her Cincinnati form has carried over.

by Anonymousreply 164September 3, 2022 2:12 AM

Serena has always been Goofus. Venus has always been Gallant.

by Anonymousreply 165September 3, 2022 2:12 AM

I have really enjoyed watching Caroline play recently - I’m rooting for her to win the whole thing.

by Anonymousreply 166September 3, 2022 2:13 AM

Serena mentally hasn't been the same since she choked against Vinci

by Anonymousreply 167September 3, 2022 2:13 AM

Serena going down swinging. Wow she cracked some winners in this game

by Anonymousreply 168September 3, 2022 2:14 AM

could Wolf's cross necklace be any bigger?

by Anonymousreply 169September 3, 2022 2:19 AM

out of nowhere vintage Serena movement to a drop shot!

by Anonymousreply 170September 3, 2022 2:21 AM

I get the sense the announcers are gritting their teeth when they praise AT.

by Anonymousreply 171September 3, 2022 2:22 AM

thanks for the wonderful memories

the final match of the legendary Serena Williams

GOAT at her peak fuck the haters

by Anonymousreply 172September 3, 2022 2:23 AM

it's not fair to AT. she's stealing all the limelight! FUCK YOU US OPEN!

by Anonymousreply 173September 3, 2022 2:24 AM

R173 you're too bothered. Tomljanovic understands the moment even if you don't

by Anonymousreply 174September 3, 2022 2:25 AM

Let AT have her moment! Good God.

by Anonymousreply 175September 3, 2022 2:26 AM

Buh-bye. Never again will we hear you threaten to stuff the ball down the fucking umpire's throat.

by Anonymousreply 176September 3, 2022 2:26 AM

FINALLY. Now we can be spared having her big ass in our face every fucking night and day. And why are they interviewing the loser now? Fuck these people. She LOST, get over it and move on.

by Anonymousreply 177September 3, 2022 2:27 AM

[...]

by Anonymousreply 178September 3, 2022 2:27 AM

Best match ever! But poor Serena made too many frustrating, tired mistakes...

by Anonymousreply 179September 3, 2022 2:28 AM

No congratulations for her opponent?

by Anonymousreply 180September 3, 2022 2:28 AM

Tomljanovic's mental toughness has greatly improved this year it's surprising she didn't out-choke Serena tonight

by Anonymousreply 181September 3, 2022 2:28 AM

Yeah, let’s just IGNORE the winner!

by Anonymousreply 182September 3, 2022 2:29 AM

the crowd is cheering the winner so the whiners here can shut the fuck up

by Anonymousreply 183September 3, 2022 2:29 AM

Bye Bye Serena!!!

by Anonymousreply 184September 3, 2022 2:30 AM

What’s wrong with some you? Tennis history isn’t good enough for you?

by Anonymousreply 185September 3, 2022 2:30 AM

R185 they're bitter racists who are mad that a black woman is being celebrated

as if tennis world won't do the same for Federer and Nadal

by Anonymousreply 186September 3, 2022 2:31 AM

amazing post-match interview from Tomljanovic. She's not "being ignored". Acknowledging the GOAT is not "ignoring" the winner

by Anonymousreply 187September 3, 2022 2:32 AM

R186 Oh, fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 188September 3, 2022 2:33 AM

Oh please, when Agassi lost to Benjamin Becker at his last US Open, everyone - fans, commentators - dutifully focused on him rather then the winner. It's really not Serena specific.

by Anonymousreply 189September 3, 2022 2:38 AM

[quote] Is that a birthmark or a giant mole on Musetti's chin? A shame cuz he'd be perfect without it,

[quote] it's a giant mole.

Thank you for your astute observations, R148 and R149. He needs to have that disgusting thing removed.

by Anonymousreply 190September 3, 2022 2:40 AM

I am, and forever will be, GOAT.

by Anonymousreply 191September 3, 2022 2:41 AM

I enjoyed Serena's glory days but she's been all washed up for a while.

by Anonymousreply 192September 3, 2022 2:42 AM

Fuck off Margaret. Homophobic cunt.

by Anonymousreply 193September 3, 2022 2:43 AM

We may never see another champion like Serena again - the athleticism, the longevity, the Slams, the drama. She's truly one-of-a-kind.

by Anonymousreply 194September 3, 2022 3:37 AM

The only thing she said about AT was, "she played a little better than me". what a sore loser!

by Anonymousreply 195September 3, 2022 4:31 AM

Draper injured his hamstring..."Yeah, it was just the top of my hamstring, like the insertion between the hamstring and the groin. I’ve had problems with it before, and this time it was just a lot of tennis I’ve played in the last seven weeks maybe just caught up on me,” Draper said.

Oh, how I wish I was his physio!!

'Pull your heads in': Aussie tennis fans LASH American tennis supporters that jeered and booed Anja Tomljanovic every time she made an error in historic victory that ENDED Serena Williams' tennis career

Tomljanovic showed incredible mental resilience to shut out the pro-Serena Williams crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York - the largest tennis arena in the world.

The Australian claimed the first set before falling into a 5-1 hole in the second with the 23-time grand slam champion riding momentum and the support from the parochial 23,771 strong crowd.

However the behaviour of the deafening supporters has been called into question by Aussie fans, with Tomljanovic jeered for hitting winners and booed every time she made an error.

'The crowd are disgusting. Almost silence and an undertone of boos when Tomljanovic hits a clean winner,' one tennis fan posted.

'Wow. U.S Open crowd cheering when Tomljanovic serves a fault. Pull your effing heads in,' posted another.

'Disgusting. Even when she missed a first serve, snd getting booed for complaining for the noise between serves. Typical American crowd. Lets go Ajla,' fumed yet another.

'Yeah all the rent a crowd are in the stadium. And norm don't support tennis. It seems to be getting worse each year,' posted another.

Other fans were not impressed with the antics of a clearly emotional Williams, either.

'Is Serena Williams incessant screaming at the net when she puts a ball away poor sportsmanship? I can't say publicly what I would want to do to an opponent who does this

However other fans were quick to point out Australian tennis fans have also tormented international opponents including world No.1 Daniil Medvedev and former No.1 Novak Djokovic. 'The Aussie crowd did that to Daniil in the final against Rafa. When he did a fault they would chant double and then make noise when he was tossing the ball up for his second serve. It’s beyond disrespectful to do that to a player,' a tennis fan said.

'C’mon people! If this would be the AO, it would be the exact same thing for Serena,' one fan posted.

'How many matches have [we] watched with Nick [Kyrgios] singles or Nick doubles when the crowd does exactly the same thing the US folk are doing for Serena,' said another.

Tomljanovic managed to stay in her own bubble and shut out the crowd during the win and was classy in victory, honouring the opponent she had idolised her entire career.

'I'm feeling really sorry just because I love Serena just as much as you guys do,' she said.

'What she has done for me, the sport of tennis is incredible and I never thought I'd have a chance to play her in her last match.

'I remember watching her as a kid in all those finals. This is a surreal moment for me.'

by Anonymousreply 197September 3, 2022 5:04 AM

The final 'Serena effect' match sees the US Open set a single-day RECORD... with over 72,000 fans flocking to Flushing Meadows to watch all-time great play for the last time

by Anonymousreply 198September 3, 2022 5:05 AM

R197 lol those hypocrites were cheering Kyrgios on this past AO when he was being a jerk towards his doubles' opponents. Of course the crowd was behind Serena but they cheered Tomljanovic at the end when she won and then after her lovely on-court interview.

by Anonymousreply 199September 3, 2022 5:43 AM

really crazy scheduling tomorrow. I definitely would not have put Nadal vs. Gasquet as the primetime match. That will likely be over in less than 2 hours. I'll be surprised iif Nadal loses more than 7-9 games max. Alcaraz vs. Brooksby and Schwarzman vs. Tiafoe will almost certainly be much more competitive and entertaining.

Muguruza vs. Kvitova should have been on Ashe too. I mean Collins vs. Cornet could be a fun, drama-filled affair but in terms of accomplishments they don't come close to the first pair of ladies.

Sinner vs. Nakashima should be enjoyable too

Also interested in Norrie vs. Rune, Rublev vs. Shapovalov and Pliskova vs. Bencic

by Anonymousreply 200September 3, 2022 5:47 AM

Lovely to watch this interview after the match. Especially since Ruud speaks Norwegian and Wilander speaks Swedish. It's always better to give interviews in your native language.

I've been wondering about the accommodation of players during grand slam tournaments: we know that the top tier gets treated to the best hotel suites the city has to offer and that the remaining players, the journeymen, get treated to a more basic stay. But what happens when a journeymen suddenly reaches the quarter, semi or even the final of the tournament? Do they stay in their basic hotel till the end or are they invited to move into one of the nicest suites and gets the star treatment? Anyone knows?

by Anonymousreply 202September 3, 2022 7:49 AM

Aww, Alize's rainbow LGB supporting wristband is touching a nerve here. I'll never make fun of her giant ass nostrils ever again. Even know you know that when she's at home she's the best hoover nozzle accessory in the house.

by Anonymousreply 205September 3, 2022 11:08 AM

And Tiafoe is in the US Open pride video too

by Anonymousreply 206September 3, 2022 11:12 AM

[quote]And Tiafoe is in the US Open pride video too

tbh he acts like he was forced to participate

by Anonymousreply 207September 3, 2022 11:24 AM

Regarding the R202 inquiry, I also wonder how the mid-range or lower-ranked players fare during a Grand Slam event. Don't they all have to find and pay for their accommodations? I imagine there are personnel to help secure certain venues, but is there free housing? Does USTA indeed pay for all or some of some hotel or housing costs? Is it on a per diem basis? Do the individual federations contribute? I also wonder about these things because I've often heard about the gap between pro tennis and golf players.

I often check out how much a player has earned during the year and what they'll earn for reaching a certain round in singles and doubles. For some, I imagine even the money in mixed doubles is helpful. You usually don't see too many star players in the mixed draw unless they've lost very early or there's some hit and giggle aspect to it. I also wonder about travel costs. Coaching costs. Taxes. I have my OWN finances to worry about first and foremost, but I love tennis, and wonder how some players stay afloat.

by Anonymousreply 208September 3, 2022 12:40 PM

R187 she is not the goat...

by Anonymousreply 209September 3, 2022 12:51 PM

SO on ESPN the morning after Serena has lost, they did a "tribute" segment to Serena...

The question I keep coming back to is the whole "they didn't want you there".. "your rivals resented you" and other points of the narrative.

Just who are they? who are THEY talking about...

So the segment brought up the whole Indian wells incident when they were booed and thought their matches venus and serena were fixed? how many booed? were they the majority? was it officials? just the crowd?

her "body shaming" by wearing the catsuit at the french open? did the entire crowd boo her? Was it because she truly was body shamed as being too big to wear such a outfit or was it more that it was ugly and tacky? Venus had her wardrobe issue to at the French open when she wore the skin colored underwear (on purpose of course) where it looked like she was actually nude under her dress. I can see why people didn't like this as it was crass and shocking and poor taste....

their father drumming into their head remember "they didn't and don't want you there!" .. Once again, who is They? Are/were "they" the majority?......Sounds like brainwashing ultimate chip on the shoulder...Whatever works I guess, but was it truly true?

Lastly, of course, the segment had to say how she had to "deal with" passing chrissie, martina, and steffi. Passing them? Yes in some ways, but in other ways no.

by Anonymousreply 210September 3, 2022 12:55 PM

R186 lol if serena was white , fat frau with big ass and in the same time arrogant ,agressive tiresome bitch like BLACK person Williams, I think we would call her names as well.

by Anonymousreply 211September 3, 2022 12:57 PM

I remember watching that Indian Wells match on TV. The booing was pretty bad, plus there were racial overtones to a lot of it. No wonder they both skipped that tournament for years after.

I think both Williams enjoyed sticking their fingers in the eyes of the tennis establishment to some extent.

by Anonymousreply 212September 3, 2022 1:02 PM

Margaret Court is not the goat. Just look at her: long furrowed neck and green exoskeleton. She's a turtle. Which makes Serena the goat. Or Steffi. But not Court.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 213September 3, 2022 1:12 PM

Cornet vs. Collins could be interesting. Collins could blast her off the court or Cornet could use her cagey veteran ways to frustrate Collins by getting a ton of balls back, mixing it up with drop shots, slices, loopers. Either way Collins' head will look like it's going to explode.

by Anonymousreply 214September 3, 2022 2:10 PM

R211 Well said. Just search DL for comments re. Ostapenko. We here at DL are completely fair in our bitching!! No player who verbally assaulted a court official, in the manner Serena ( ps why is she now talking about herself in the third person? ) did, should ever be considered the GOAT

by Anonymousreply 215September 3, 2022 2:22 PM

R215 and it isn't just one time! Just at the Open alone, how many "incidences" has Serena created? When she is losing of course...

Oh, I forgot she's passionate and a warrior and a fighter and look where she came from and had to go thru! blah, blah, blah!

AS IF no other top player all time great isn't any of these qualities?

by Anonymousreply 216September 3, 2022 2:28 PM

Last year, most players stayed at 1 hotel, which was provided free of charge by US open. This year, I think the players stayed at hotels of their choice. Many players made arrangements with hotels to advertise their stay on social media in exchange for complimentary stay. For those really poor ones, I think the US open will tell them to stay at specific hotels as they may have negotiated cheap rates for them during their stay. it's usually in midtown manhattan. there is s a shuttle bus that brings them to the venue.

by Anonymousreply 217September 3, 2022 3:24 PM

"But what happens when a journeymen suddenly reaches the quarter, semi or even the final of the tournament? Do they stay in their basic hotel till the end or are they invited to move into one of the nicest suites and gets the star treatment? Anyone knows? "

They do not change hotels.

by Anonymousreply 230September 3, 2022 5:39 PM

are you guys betting on these matches?

by Anonymousreply 231September 3, 2022 5:42 PM

R231 As a rule I don't bet on tennis because I know that I can't beat the odds. The oddsmakers are very efficient. They have teams of professional quants inputting various data to make them, plus the bookie takes a cut. I wouldn't be able to compete with that. The only sports that are worth betting on are less popular ones where the markets aren't efficient or if you have some kind of exceptional insight.

by Anonymousreply 232September 3, 2022 5:46 PM

Mugu lost.

by Anonymousreply 233September 3, 2022 5:48 PM

she's engaged to her coach right? Kvitova. She can do better. he's fug

by Anonymousreply 234September 3, 2022 5:49 PM

I wish I could find a photo but years ago when Kvitova first came on the scene she got this boyfriend who looked like a little boy next to her, it was bizarre. Anyone remember that?

She has also dated Radek Stepanek.

by Anonymousreply 242September 3, 2022 7:53 PM

cheering for Rublev over Putin-loving shit Shapovalov. Has Shapovalov ever spoken on the Ukraine situation like Rublev did earlier this year "no war please" ?

Rublev is at least likable.

by Anonymousreply 243September 3, 2022 7:58 PM

Tiafoe is pretty ass-tastic rigt out of the gate. He knows to wear his shorts tight and short.

by Anonymousreply 244September 3, 2022 7:59 PM

R243 Rublev is funny, he was complainning about losing the Harry Styles' concert and wondering how other players know celebrities (he asked for some basketball game tickets and they give him tickets on the last row)

by Anonymousreply 245September 3, 2022 8:23 PM

R245 what do you mean? there are not basketball games being played right now.

by Anonymousreply 246September 3, 2022 8:42 PM

Tiafoe has the best ass on tour

by Anonymousreply 247September 3, 2022 8:45 PM

R246 Not now, he once asked for the tickets. He wonders how other players get to know celebrities and he can't get even decent tickets

by Anonymousreply 248September 3, 2022 8:45 PM

Rublev isn't that famous. Celebs hang out and meet other celebs/rich connect folk. We've never seen him out on the scene

Rublev seems more introverted and he's not winning slams yet so hard luck

by Anonymousreply 249September 3, 2022 8:47 PM

lol Rublev/Shapovalov going 5 as we all predicted

by Anonymousreply 250September 3, 2022 8:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 251September 3, 2022 8:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 252September 3, 2022 8:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 253September 3, 2022 8:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 254September 3, 2022 8:50 PM

Alcaraz just too physical for Booksby. Tidy 6-3 6-3 6-3 win

by Anonymousreply 255September 3, 2022 8:53 PM

Tiafoe turns the first set around and wins in a tie break. It’s exciting tennis, so it’s time for ESPN to cut away to nonsense chatter.

by Anonymousreply 256September 3, 2022 9:12 PM

I'd rather watch Tiafoe, but Ajla is coming off very well in this interview.

by Anonymousreply 257September 3, 2022 9:19 PM

yes, she is and that woman's red jacket is too small for her. it doesn't even fit!

by Anonymousreply 258September 3, 2022 9:20 PM

Tiafoe shirtless on the bench, begging to be licked. All that salty, musty, funky goodness. And that's before he takes his shorts off.

his mom is there

by Anonymousreply 260September 3, 2022 9:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 261September 3, 2022 9:43 PM

how crazy is it that Youzhny, the guy who intentionally bashed his own forehead bloody with his racquet, is considered a "steadying coaching force" for Shapovalov?

by Anonymousreply 262September 3, 2022 9:53 PM

Shapovalov lost.

by Anonymousreply 263September 3, 2022 9:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 272September 3, 2022 11:09 PM

by Anonymousreply 273September 3, 2022 11:23 PM

Nadal bagels Gasquet in a 40-minute first set…

by Anonymousreply 278September 4, 2022 12:04 AM

Gasquet should be ashamed of himself! What I mean is he was a true on the level of Rafa's rival when they were juniors and it was predicted he would go on to many great things and be a multiple grand slam champion! Instead, he seemingly never improved at all and more importantly seemingly never DID ANYTHING to improve.. the ridiculous serving motion of just put the ball in play, hitting the groundstrokes the same year after year, never changed his game at all and so on... Did he simply not have the talent or was he just that stubborn?

by Anonymousreply 279September 4, 2022 12:20 AM

Nice going Nadal!

by Anonymousreply 280September 4, 2022 12:39 AM

Poor Richard. He was so fucking hot and sexy for a time but now he’s just sad.

by Anonymousreply 281September 4, 2022 12:43 AM

Gasquet truly has almost no "first serve". Just spins it in. Embarrassing

by Anonymousreply 282September 4, 2022 12:50 AM

as noted earlier this was a big flop to think of putting this on for a night match.

Gasquet's problem is his game just doesn't match up well to Nadal's. We know Nadal's high looping forehand is always hell to deal with for 1 handed backhands. That neutralizes Gasquet's game since his BH is by far his best shot. His other problem is his forehand grip is wonky and therefore can be easily attacked. The only 1 handers who really give Nadal trouble are those with big forehands (hence why Wawrinka has only gotten a couple of wins since his grip is wonky too). Another issue is Gasquet has an OK serve but not big enough to consistently get free points off of it. Lastly he never had the best fitness so even if he's hot on a given day, Nadal can always wear him down. Gasquet's best bet is to try getting in to net but the problem is as already described, his groundstrokes often won't be good enough approaches.

Gasquet really should have worked on his forehand and serve 10 years ago

tomorrow's night match promises to be a double villain drama show! I hope Medvedev and Kyrgios bring the trash talking

Berrettini vs. ADF could be fun if ADF can return well

by Anonymousreply 287September 4, 2022 1:10 AM

Medvedev isn't a real villain; he just plays one sometimes. Kyrgios, on the other hand, is disgusting and trash all the way through.

by Anonymousreply 288September 4, 2022 1:22 AM

Medvedev is a racist and an anti-semite. I'd take Kyrgios over him any day.

by Anonymousreply 289September 4, 2022 1:40 AM

I'm disappointed in Shapovalov. So many unforced errors!

What is his problem? A few years ago, he was exhilarating to watch.

Now it's just one Maalox moment after another.

by Anonymousreply 290September 4, 2022 1:52 AM

Nadal is unusually chatty today.

In the interview you can get a real close look at his nose. He's lucky it's not broken or swollen. The dried blood marks look nasty and will likely take at least a week to heal if not more.

by Anonymousreply 291September 4, 2022 2:28 AM

R289, back that up with links.

by Anonymousreply 292September 4, 2022 2:38 AM

nice first set by Nakashima. He's really getting pace and depth on his groundies

by Anonymousreply 293September 4, 2022 2:57 AM

Love Gasquet but his time has ended. Retired and enjoy life with his big penis. Delish.

by Anonymousreply 294September 4, 2022 3:25 AM

R292 You couldn't google for yourself?

"A Russian tennis player was disqualified from the second round of the Savannah Challenger on Thursday for making a racist comment after the umpire ruled in favor of his opponent.

Twenty-year-old Daniil Medvedev thought he had won a break point against Donald Young's serve, but umpire Sandy French ruled that his returning shot had gone out.

Medvedev said Young and French, who are both African-Americans, were friends. He was disqualified mid-match for 'question[ing] the impartiality of the umpire based on her race,' the United States Tennis Association said in a statement."

Antisemitism:

"Daniil Medvedev was apologetic in his press conference after ending his Wimbledon match by throwing a handful of coins at the umpire's chair.

Medvedev, who beat Stan Wawrinka in the first round, lost to Ruben Bemelmans 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3 in the second round.

Medvedev shook hands with the Belgian, who triumphed 6-4 6-2 3-6 2-6 6-3 but headed to his bag, took out his wallet and began to throw two handfuls of coins towards the foot of the umpire's chair."

"Gasquet should be ashamed of himself! Did he simply not have the talent or was he just that stubborn?"

I actually think this is a ridiculous take. In every sport there's a group of top juniors who inevitably do not ALL become top seniors. There are top juniors who don't have any sort of decent senior career. There are top juniors who are journeymen who play challengers and never consistently break out on the ATP tour. There are top juniors who live in that random space between 120 and 50 play some ATP tournaments via auto entry but then have to qualify for other tournaments.

Gasquet made 3 Slam SFs, 2 QFs, 16!! additional 4th Rounds in Slams. He was ranked in the Top 10, he won a mixed doubles Slam, he won an Olympic medal, he won Davis Cup, he won 15 ATP main tour titles.

Not everyone can go from being a top junior to being Fed or Nadal or Sampras.

I don't think Gasquet is some failure because he didn't match his top junior peers. Compared to a incredibly small number of them (Nadal, Djokovic, Murray), his career is lacking. Compared to 99.8% of people who played pro tennis, his career is stellar.

by Anonymousreply 305September 4, 2022 4:47 AM

My conclusion is that Gasquet DID improve - massively. He left 99.5% of his junior contemporaries in the dust. That he didn't usurp 3-5 of them hardly makes him a failure.

by Anonymousreply 306September 4, 2022 4:50 AM

Shapo especially likes little poodley dogs.

And crossing his legs at the knee.

by Anonymousreply 310September 4, 2022 6:42 AM

I think it's true to say that Gasquet hasn't lived up to his early potential - but then so few ever do. I think he's had a great career, plays tennis that is beautiful to watch and occasionally awe-inspiring. Off court he comes across as a humble, warm and generous guy.

He still, evidently enjoys playing, and can still pull out wins over anyone bar a select few. I think he should carry on - rack up those 600 tour wins (he's on 580) - and go out next summer in Paris.

by Anonymousreply 311September 4, 2022 9:38 AM

Happy Alcraz won! And in 3 sets! Wow! Brooksby can be a tricky opponent but he did it.

by Anonymousreply 312September 4, 2022 10:17 AM

R305 The problem is Gasquet is not some random GS junior champion. He was the top player and the chosen one (some experts say) to dominate the circuit. His rivaldry with Rafa was supposed to be epic, and it was when they were U18 and on chiallenger level, but once they become pro i think Richard crumble under the pressure of the french federation.

He never really improved and he never was a threat at GS even if he has a very decent career (the fact that Alcaraz has more big titles at 19 than Gasquet says it all).

I watch Richard playing against Murray and for three games he was a hitting machine, he totally destroyed Murray and show his true potential, but in the middle of the third game he started to fail and in the end Murray won that much with ease

by Anonymousreply 313September 4, 2022 11:08 AM

Being a top junior isn't a good prediction of being a slam winner.

by Anonymousreply 314September 4, 2022 11:14 AM

R314 t was not about being a top junior. He defeated Federer really young, his rankings were very high (even he had some injuries), he had the game to live to his promise, but he never improved

by Anonymousreply 315September 4, 2022 11:25 AM

It's weird how all the French players are headcases regardless of gender or ethnicity.

by Anonymousreply 316September 4, 2022 11:37 AM

gasquet never did improve.. did he do anything that shows that? changing stroke production, improving that serve motion and the serve in general? lifted weights, got stronger, more athletic, used more variety. anything??...

compare him to let's say chris evert, when she was in the midst of that 13 match 2 year losing streak to martina, what did she do? she change rackets from her decades use of wood to graphite, she started lifting weights, running 6 miles a day, doing all kinds of agility drills on the court, added kick to her 2nd serve and used her legs for more speed on her serves, changed her forehand to more of a open stance and a weapon, changed strategy when playing martina for example purposely looping her forehand with topspin to keep martina back on her backhand side, came to the net more, and so on and so on! ALL things I might add when she was already 30...

I don't think anyone ever worked harder to improve and keep up with their main rival. And I don't think evert gets enough credit for NOT pulling a "Borg" and giving up...

Moutet just grabbed Ruud's head, shoved it down on his dick, and blew a big load down his throat in that breaker.

Metaphorically.

by Anonymousreply 332September 4, 2022 6:46 PM

Ruud🤦‍♂️ Ffs! How can you lose a set to Moutet. This is fucking laughable. I'm so pissed off and annoyed right now. Wouldn't surprise me if he ends up losing this match now. He's playing like a fucking mug.

by Anonymousreply 333September 4, 2022 6:57 PM

I doubt it. Ruud is solid and he has quite experience

by Anonymousreply 334September 4, 2022 7:16 PM

Ruud is king of the ATP 250s. Good player, but he's not winning Slams.

by Anonymousreply 335September 4, 2022 7:27 PM

Moutet is a little bitch isn't he? Typical French flake whining like Paire

Ruud is solid but you can see why he has a harder time on hardcourts against top players most of the time. His backhand is too "spinny" and just sits up, waiting to be whacked. If you're going to put lots of spin on your shots you have to hit it harder like he does on his forehand

by Anonymousreply 336September 4, 2022 7:32 PM

Will never root for Moutet again after today. Quel con!

by Anonymousreply 337September 4, 2022 7:40 PM

R335 That's true but he has more than enough tennis to defeat someone like Moutet, and i wouldn't be surprised if he defeat Berretini too

by Anonymousreply 338September 4, 2022 7:41 PM

R337 He is always that way

by Anonymousreply 339September 4, 2022 7:42 PM

very surprised that Riske is 3-0 against Garcia. Riske's forehand is quite wobbly and off grass every top 30 player can usually break it down. Her serve is OK but nothing special and her movement is just average. Unless she just stupidly hits to her backhand the whole time, I'm shocked Garcia can't beat her.

by Anonymousreply 340September 4, 2022 8:00 PM

all 8 singles matches tomorrow could be worth watching.

by Anonymousreply 356September 4, 2022 10:30 PM

Zhang was really good. Impressive.

Coco made some errors that made this match harder than it should have been. But then she’d steel herself and dig herself out of the hole.

Her resolve was impressive. Tuesday’s prime time match, would would have gone to Serena if she was still in, will be Gauff v Garcia. It should be a battle.

by Anonymousreply 357September 4, 2022 10:39 PM

This is shaping up as a potentially really interesting women’s tournament.

There are a number of remaining players who I might not have tabbed before the Open started but are credible threats.

Collins has been fun. Has her rough edges but she’s damned tough.

SO THE 5 YEAR OLD PROFANE SOCIOPATH NUTJOB krygios is playing and just won the first set against medvedev....

question: krygios just said FUCK while upclose in the camera, said it twice to his box... Isn't this called a "audible profanity"? And a warning should have been given!.. What the umpire didn't hear him say it?

On a sidenote, is there anything more sickening than listen to the mcenroe brothers AND chris"foul-er"?...

by Anonymousreply 374September 5, 2022 12:29 AM

R369.. of course asshole mcenroe wants to see another asshole krygios win... birds of a feather...

mcenroe has alread stated that WE ALL should ignore his antics on court, and focus on his talent! newsflash mcenroe: who he is and who we all are is SUPPOSE TO BE MORE IMPORTANT than our "talent" in whatever!..

by Anonymousreply 375September 5, 2022 12:30 AM

Kyrgios will be definitely getting lots of fines after this match (lots of racket smashing as well).

Medvedev was complaining to the umpire about Kyrgios's camp making noise.

Sexy Kokk is supporting Kyrgios in a sleeveless Nirvana shirt.

by Anonymousreply 377September 5, 2022 12:33 AM

Medvedev quickly gets an early break. I am not too sure that Kyrgios can keep the level of the first set up for the entire match. He won the first set of the Wimbledon final as well.

by Anonymousreply 378September 5, 2022 12:35 AM

Meanwhile it seems the majority in the stadium what a foul mouth sociopath asshole to win... What does that say about THEM?

by Anonymousreply 379September 5, 2022 12:40 AM

Ugly Americans, R379.

by Anonymousreply 380September 5, 2022 12:49 AM

Kyrgios obviously doesn’t GAF at this point.

by Anonymousreply 381September 5, 2022 12:52 AM

I like Jimmy Arias as a commentator. Some don't, but I always have.

The ESPN3 feed has Arias and Carillo commentating vs. The McEnroe brothers and Fowler on the main ESPN or ESPN2 feed. Carillo can really grate with her "this is the deepest observation ever" NPR voice often applied to the most mundane observations. But I grew up with her commentating and have been listening to her for 30 years, and her style is so entrenched that it doesn't bother me.

by Anonymousreply 382September 5, 2022 12:54 AM

Although the snotty Rolex guy assures us that this is the most sophisticated tennis crowd and as such suitable to wear pretentious Rolex watches, the New York evening crowds have enough drunken trash in the seats and boxes cheering on their spirit animal, Kyrgios-the-clown, to render the whole evening to be one long ridiculous sitcom, with Kyrios' box acting as supporting cast.

by Anonymousreply 383September 5, 2022 12:57 AM

I like when NK wins because I enjoy the wailing and gnashing of teeth by of all the Marys here.

That said, his box is a rough looking bunch. The guy on the back left looks like M McConaughey on a multi-day meth bender.

by Anonymousreply 390September 5, 2022 1:38 AM

^oops, I think the bender looking guy is in Med's box.

by Anonymousreply 391September 5, 2022 1:42 AM

"I like when NK wins because I enjoy the wailing and gnashing of teeth by of all the Marys here."

So, the Trump rationale? "I LOVE how this guy gets under everyone's skin, he's my hero!"

by Anonymousreply 392September 5, 2022 1:43 AM

How many breaks do they get to go off court? Meds back ow get back to the game.

by Anonymousreply 393September 5, 2022 1:49 AM

Don't put words in my mouth R392. I never claimed he was my hero, but thanks for proving my point with your ridiculous comparison to trump.

by Anonymousreply 394September 5, 2022 1:50 AM

R394.. it's called an analogy and yes, it's apt, because that is EXACTLY the way trump worshippers (and yes they are worshippers) think.

by Anonymousreply 395September 5, 2022 1:53 AM

I'd only prove your point if I was "Mary"-ing about Kyrgios. I don't mind at all if he wins. It's not a ridiculous comparison to Trump, it's a comparison to people who like Trump for the reason that he bothers other people. Duh.

by Anonymousreply 396September 5, 2022 1:54 AM

R395 In that case, then I think that Medvedev has the stench of evil about him and that he'd be an enthusiastic Nazi camp commander if he weren't a tennis player and didn't have sponsors.

by Anonymousreply 397September 5, 2022 1:55 AM

Yes, enjoying people bitch and moan over shitty behavior on the tennis court is EXACTLY the same as worshiping someone who tired to overthrow the government and most likely sold top secret intel to foreign adversaries.

Can we please have one thread without mention of that waste of oxygen.

by Anonymousreply 398September 5, 2022 1:57 AM

So do the trash in the stands KNOW they are trash or is it trash is the new cool and hip? I will say I can't think of any other major sports event in a stadium that has so so many "posers" and "wannabe's" besides of course the attention whores that are the free tickets celebrities. They, the celebrities care so so much about tennis, that they immediately left when a Serena match ended, never mind the rest of the night schedule.

by Anonymousreply 399September 5, 2022 1:57 AM

FWIW, Coco GOAT says that Kyrgios is nice off court - always says hello and is generous with his time, hitting with her even when she was 13 years old, and another time when he had already hit for two hours.

by Anonymousreply 400September 5, 2022 2:00 AM

R400.. true and he is always respectful during sit down interviews, But i'm sorry this does not remotely excuse his behavior in a stadium of thousands and around the world on TV for ALL to see, not just his private one on one with another professional tennis player....

tom cruise is very nice in public too and with interviewers (those who don't ask the questions that he doesn't allow of course)...

by Anonymousreply 401September 5, 2022 2:02 AM

I like watching Kyrgios play, he's pretty damn good.

by Anonymousreply 402September 5, 2022 2:03 AM

Danii beat Novak last year in the US Open final? How was Novak allowed in last year?

by Anonymousreply 403September 5, 2022 2:05 AM

R402, he’s got some great shots. But how embarrassing for Medvedev.

by Anonymousreply 404September 5, 2022 2:06 AM

R401 Yeah, it is complex. I don't like a lot of his on-court behavior either. The smashing of rackets, the spitting, the outbursts make me cringe.

by Anonymousreply 405September 5, 2022 2:06 AM

There's plenty of Kyrgios even in recreational tennis. I play USTA leagues and tournaments and have played plenty of opponents who were bratty, obnoxious, crude on court, but were perfectly amiable, chill, and nice to talk to off the court.

by Anonymousreply 406September 5, 2022 2:07 AM

I find his on-court behavior boorish, but it also fascinates me how he's able to expend so much energy on his outbursts then focus and play lights out tennis.

NIck plays Karen next!

by Anonymousreply 411September 5, 2022 2:17 AM

Medvedev just stalked off the court, didn’t stop to acknowledge the crowd or sign autographs. Just OUT OF THERE.

by Anonymousreply 412September 5, 2022 2:18 AM

Is Karen pronounced the same in Russian as female Karens in English?

by Anonymousreply 413September 5, 2022 2:19 AM

Rafa can do that to one's spirit, R414.

And there's still time to make it three!

by Anonymousreply 419September 5, 2022 3:01 AM

R422 Niemeier makes me think of the Soviet-era statues that I saw in Budapest. Very thick and hale, the kind of 'maiden' that authoritarian states like.
