by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 2, 2022 10:49 PM |
Has it been confirmed that Laurence Lau is gay? The only thing I know about the Jamies is that Bekins' was Wyndham's favorite and they're still in touch. Apparently the only people from the show she still hangs out with are Bekins, Sandy Ferguson, and Matt Crane. I found that interesting.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 3, 2022 12:21 AM |
R25, The actors mentioned played her children. Perhaps the good relationship stemmed from her taking them under her wing and showing them the ropes. I note that these three were also the youngest versions of Rachel's children (after the child actors, of course). So they probably didn't have as much experience or knowledge to fall back on.
Meanwhile, Laurence Lau had already been a hit on All My Children. Russell Todd was in his 30s when he took the role. There would definitely be a different dynamic. Maybe neither went running to Wyndham for advice or a helping hand.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 3, 2022 9:49 AM |
Lau has always had a female wife/partner officially and in print, but there's been longstanding gossip that he has always played on the side with men - a club where his fellow members include Michael E. Knight and Michael Park. I don't know if he's cruising the bookstores as Park is said to have done, but let's just say I've heard enough from a few NYC based friends to convince me.
As far as La Wyndham bonding with her on screen children, I do know she and Matt Crane both had art and sculpting as a shared passion, so that likely bonded them outside of the show.
What she said in 2007 about her relationships with AW costars (which sounds sane, and like any coworker at anyone's job):
[quote] Well, if itâs a real friendship that will transcend the work situation, then you carry that one over. There are people I have carried on with. Charles, Connie Ford was a good friend, Douglass was a good friend. Sandy Ferguson was a good friend. Matt, I hung out a lot with him out in California when I was out there for those years after the show folded. But you donât carry that with everybody. People go their separate ways. You run into them and youâre happy to see them, then you go your separate ways. Itâs sort of the bittersweet, but wonderful thing, about show business. Nobody hangs on.

by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 3, 2022 3:30 PM |
Some actors are definitely like Lady Eyes A-Buggin' (and there is nothing wrong with that). But it's pretty damn clear that some casts (like late era GL) are more than just co-workers.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 3, 2022 3:35 PM |
I don't think she's moody, I just think she's not fake. She's not one of those actors who would go on talk shows and talk about how the cast is a family and all that bullshit. I think she has a very realistic view of what the show was, why she was doing the show and what she wanted out of the show. She was #1 on the call sheet, but she was never treated like Lucci, Hall, or Slezak and I'm not sure she wanted to be.
My feeling from reading her various interviews is that she feels she did her best work in the 70s under Lemay and Rauch and everything after that the character was just filler, but it paid for her life. Three houses, supporting two sons, and a sculpting career as a side hustle. That's a pretty good deal.
I wish I knew more about what she wrote for the show.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 3, 2022 3:39 PM |
I completely agree that VW had every right to do and be what and who she was. I just don't think her experience is the only kind of experience soap actors have. It isn't like a stage play where you hang out with people constantly for two years then never see them again. These people work together for decades, through pregnancies, marriages, divorces, deaths. They are family. VW chose one things, others choose another.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 3, 2022 3:46 PM |
I think a set is just like any workplace. One or two people you may develop off the clock friendships with, but most you don't. I think VW is the rule and not the exception. I think fans want to believe that the actors are like their characters and that everyone is buddy buddy, I just don't believe that.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 3, 2022 3:53 PM |
I disagree, but I think we have exhausted this particular topic.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 3, 2022 3:55 PM |
I recall various soap boards I've visited over the years where fans went to war over this subject. "Well, of course, they're all friends!" My favorites were the fraus and trolls who dedicated entire threads to whether their favorite ship were friends in real life or not. If there were dueling ships (there was usually a man at the center) the base who thought their couple got along best in real life "won."
I think of soap sets as being like any job. It's work. There will be some folks you like. Other people not so much. And still more that you don't know very well at all. No big deal.
The magic of television has made many people believe their favorite characters carry those relationships offscreen. They often become very disappointed when they discover that their favorite couple or besties weren't particularly close.
Lucky for me that I've always been a contrarian. All my favorite couples are rumored to have hated and/or only tolerated each other in real life. Never hurt their chemistry for me, so I never gave a damn.

I can see the late era GL folks really bonding. Many of them were show veterans already, and for better or worse, Wheeler did a lot of stuff (like the Habitat for Humanity thing) that helped bond them as fighters to the end.
I liked what Wyndham said - you are always happy to see a coworker or former co star but not necessarily seeking them out otherwise. Many women, like Wyndham, McKinsey, et al were single moms raising children. If a particular star wasn't on 5 days a week front burner, it could be a nice way to make a living and still have some chance for time with family.

Like who would have ever thought that Deidre Hall and Jane Elliot would be besties, but they are. Two very different actresses with two very different soap experiences, but they're pals. And there are the hottest soap couples in the history of the form who loathed each other in real life. I guess all that loathing reads as sexual chemistry. But I agree, I think fans want actors to be like the characters. Most of them have work relationships that begin and end at the office and maybe at a cast party.

Alan Locher did a one-on-one session with Robert Newman this week.
First half of the hour is talking a lot about his six-month stint on Y&R as Ashland Locke and some plays he just did.
Second half, he talks a lot about his 28 years with GL. Some of the tidbits he reveals are that Doug Marland was furious about P&G interference with his scripts, so Marland started turning in his scripts just a day before the tape date to prevent interference.
Similarly, he said Marland wanted to be out of communication with P&G for a while, so he took a part in a musical performing somewhere along Cap Cod.
Additionally, he said Michelle Forbes had no interest in being in soaps and was mentally checked out even while she was performing Sonni/Solita.
Also said he was not planning to renew his contract when it expired in 2008 since it was obvious GL was going to be cancelled soon. But his wife talked him into renewing saying the Josh should be in the final show.
The GL talk starts about 32:00 in.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 5, 2022 3:07 AM |
I didn't realize that he was on GL at the same time as Marland. I thought Pam Long brought the Lewises on.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 5, 2022 3:17 AM |
Assuming Soap Central is right, Josh debuted in October 1981, just over a month after Trish and at least a half-year before Marland left.

[quote] I thought Pam Long brought the Lewises on.
Josh was on long before Pam hit the scene
his first storyline was battling John Wesley Shipp (kelly) for the love of Morgan (Jennifer Cooke)
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 5, 2022 3:26 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 5, 2022 3:29 AM |
No, Josh and Trish were both on in the Marland years. Pam expanded them and brought on the southern element - ergo Billy, H.B. and eventually Reva at the end of 1983.

by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 5, 2022 3:41 AM |
Seriously. She was mesmerizing.
But she seems to have had mental health issues and was probably channeling that, much as Frank Beaty did in later years.
Sometimes actors pull from within and that dance can take you awfully close to the fire. Michael Morrison.....and that redheaded actress who played on the early years of the Doctors....among others.

Michelle Forbes would say about acting on Guiding Light
"Everyday I have to cry or be on edge. It gets crazy sometimes. When I got hired to do a soap, I thought I'd get to wear pretty clothes and talk about who's sleeping with whom - well, we're talking religion, sex, guilt, rejection, loyalty, greed - there are some serious issues here, not what I would have expected at all."
by Anonymous | reply 60 | September 5, 2022 3:46 AM |
I find it interesting that people talk about Marland's writing on GL and then they just skip to Pam Long's tenure. What happened during the years between Marland and Long? The writers were Pat Falken Smith, then they had that awful L. Virginia Browne, Gene Palumbo and then the Cullitons.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 5, 2022 3:46 AM |
R59 That clip does not do Michelle justice. That storyline was peak soap opera. I know it kind of happened by accident with the writers strike but the end result was every thing you want in a soap storyline at the highest quality. The story, with its crazy twists and turns, was one thing, but watching Michelle and Kim go toe to toe was another. Both were of the highest quality. I feel sorry for people who werenât able to witness this play out on GL. Had GL rode into this storyline from a better place it would have been #1 in the ratings. Unfortunately, it came off two terrible years- 1986/87.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 5, 2022 3:57 AM |
Marland sure was a prissy old queen.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 5, 2022 3:57 AM |
R60 Her quote nails the quality of GL at the time. That storyline dealt with some heavy issues (abuse, suicide, even porn). For a daytime soap it was borderline scandalous. Both actresses knew theyâd met their matches and watching them try to outdo each other was wow.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 5, 2022 4:02 AM |
The Sonni/Solita story may have been even better if it hadn't turned into a noodly - yet still compelling - mess for a bit during the 1988 strike.

Actually, it was only 8 months between Marland and Pam Long. Marland's last scripts aired in mid-September 1982. Pam's first scripts aired in late May 1983.
And of course during those 8 months between the two, that long list of writers had Marland's Bible to work with. Not that they followed it all, but they had it to guide them.

Marland hated working with Agnes Nixon on Loving.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | September 5, 2022 4:57 PM |

And Marland was a middle aged former actor. And a theater queen who liked the best things in life. I would imagine he'd have to be a somewhat complex, nuanced individual for those stories to spring forth from his head.

R51, the musical Doug Marland ended up doing in the Cape Cod area during his âestrangementâ from P&G was Gypsy! He played Herbie. I wonder who played Rose.
The Robert Newman one on one with Alan was quite interesting. Good for Newman, a thoroughly mediocre actor, getting to play Don Quixote and other roles heâd never have gotten a chance to play other than at the Barn Theatre in Bumfuck, Michigan.
R75, Iâve told this before and Iâll tell it again-about a year before he died I spotted Marland in London in the lobby of the play Dancing in Lughnasa. I stopped to tell him how much I loved his work on ATWT and how touched I was by Alice Hainingâs performance when Angel took the stand. I knowâŠMARY! Anyway, Marland was noticeably shocked by this and called his male companion over and asked me to repeat what Iâd just said. I would assume he loved Dancing at Lughnasa, a kitchen sink drama centered on a large family.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | September 5, 2022 8:43 PM |
Newman himself was never a draw, it was always about the female actors he was paired with. Michelle Forbes, Cynthia Watros, Kim Zimmer, and to a lesser extent Beth Ehlers. I laughed when he had to point out that Rauch couldn't bully him since on his own he had no pull or power, it was always about the other actors. He rode their coattails. On his own, Josh was void of personality, humanity, or any interesting qualities, and Newman is a dud actor.
People watching Y&R seemed to be surprised by his ârangeâ but to me was playing the same part, it was just characterized differently by the show. Josh was arrogant, patronizing, condescending, lying, manipulative, and a real dick but GL wrapped all of that up in a tidy good-guy package and said âheâs not horrible, heâs just flawed.â Ashland exhibited the same qualities except no one was apologizing for it, least of all the character. Thereâs no stellar acting here, itâs that the narrative from the show was different. I canât believe people donât pick up on this.

Carmen Duncan was a decent actress, but it seemed like the show didnât know what to do with Iris after Mac died.
Iris should have fallen in love with a man with a bitchy, manipulative, possessive daughter, like Iris was in the 70s.
We could have seen her come full circle with Rachel-until Iris started manipulating the lives of Jamie, Matt and Amanda in the interest of protecting the Cory name. Iris and Rachel should have had a rivlary like Kay and Jill on Y&R through rhe remaining run of the show.

Has there ever been a crazy recasting as Billy Dee Williams to James Earl Jones and at the same time Ruby Dee to Cicely Tyson on Guiding Light in the 60s? Icon to Icon, Icon to Icon. And two huge Star Wars actors. They were also the first regularly featured black characters on a daytime show. Any of you elder gays remember them?
by Anonymous | reply 141 | September 12, 2022 10:36 AM |
I would be interested in hearing about their storylines too, R141.
I'm currently re-watching Guiding Light 1993. David and Gilly Grant and Kat and Hampton Speakes are the black cast members. They are, of course, off on their own island. David gets to save Bridget and Hart from themselves from time to time. And he's always there for one of the white kids to "talk to." David and Bridget would have been a good couple given the actors' chemistry, but even 17 year old me knew it would never happen. Old grannies would cry murder. And this is back when they still had to write letters to share their outrage.
Meanwhile, gorgeous Nia Long only had eyes for David (after a brief dalliance with Jesse L Martin), despite hotties like Hart, Dylan, and even youngish Alan-Michael, running around Springfield. I was happy when she left the show and began doing films.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | September 12, 2022 11:48 AM |
The 90 year old grannies who watched THE Guiding Light did not want to see black people on screen, much less see an interracial romance. They would have spontaneously imploded. It was called THE Guiding Light, not THE Guiding Dark.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | September 12, 2022 12:00 PM |
TGL made a huge mistake by not at least trying Gilly and Alan Michael. Those two actors had sizzling chemistry.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | September 12, 2022 12:05 PM |
I agree, R144. I was looking forward to it, but it never materialized. Amelia and Rick even mentioned it during their Locher interview. They knew what the fans wanted.
Kat and David got screen time maybe four days per month. Three of those days were usually them discussing BRIDGET's story. Seriously, I was amazed that two horny kids would spend their time together discussing someone else's love life and not their own. I guess the racists would have changed the channel if their conversations had been about their own story. Or the lack of it. One of the four days was usually dedicated to David getting himself together after leaving behind his criminal past.
It's the same on every soap I've watched. As I re-watch 1994 OLTL, RJ Gannon is introduced - criminal past, islanded off with other black folks, only allowed periphery contact with the main characters despite Tim Stickney's deep charisma. And this era of OLTL had some of the worst male actors the show ever had, IMO.
Same thing for a character from Another World. Forgot his name, but it's the same template: troubled, criminal past, worked at Cass's law office, comic relief/talk-to character, only allowed to "play" with black characters created specifically for that purpose.
Wash, rinse, repeat.

Itâs amazing Quinn Harding was on AW for so long. Her character was a block of ice and the same was apparently true Petronia Paley. She was described by one of my crew friends as âEllen Holly on meds, a chip on her shoulder a mile wide.â

by Anonymous | reply 147 | September 12, 2022 2:17 PM |
On the one hand it seems that every actress of color is said to have an attitude or issues - Petronia, Ellen, Vicki Rowell.
On the other hand....every one of them was treated as window dressing for the white performers. Even Rowell, though she went higher and farther than anyone else on daytime except for Debbi Morgan.

Isnât Monti Sharp a homosexualist?
by Anonymous | reply 149 | September 12, 2022 3:16 PM |
Rowell had by far the most interesting, well developed role for a Black person on daytime. Debbi Morganâs Angie on AMC was often a simpering saint.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | September 12, 2022 3:38 PM |
I keep meaning to watch AMC during the Angie/Jesse's ascent. I've heard so much that they broke barriers. Yet, I've also heard that they mainly played talk-tos for characters like Greg and Jenny. Which one is it? Well, now that I think on it, it can be both. Angie/Jesse was probably revolutionary for the time (even as they nursed/saved the headlining white characters). I'm getting plenty of that from GL, AW, and OLTL, so I've been dragging my feet on watching.
Dru is legendary, but I doubt I'll ever do a Y&R watch. I've just never enjoyed that show. Slow as molasses. So dull. My Silent Generation great-aunts and grandmothers loved that show.

Mel on GL was at least somewhat interesting. She was allowed to have some opinions, etc. and she left Rick. I mean who wouldn't.
Yvonna Wright was OK but just couldn't give Mel the nuances that could have been great.
Gilly was very interesting and was ambitious. Even if she hit the GL stereotype of "We have a black character so their dream must be.....to be a singer/jazz musician in a nightclub!"
by Anonymous | reply 154 | September 12, 2022 6:17 PM |
Gilly was by far the most appealing of the three IIMO. The other two were just box ticks for divesityâs sake.

As the World Turns had African-American characters/actresses who were not portrayed as stereotypes or played by women characterized as difficult.
Jessica Griffin
Denise Maynard (the mother of Kim and John's grandchild!)
and my personal favorite...Camille Bennett!!!!
And they were given strong men with which to interact (Black and White) and communities. Remember the church fire and Rev. Dansby? Remember Roy Franklin and the Franklin family including Nella? They even had black villains on ATWT.

It really is something two legendary actors, and legendary Star Wars actors at that, replaced each other on GL. Add to that the actresses playing their wives being legendary in their own right is a fascinating bit of soap trivia. Come on, no one has memories of them?
Nia Longâs stint on GL was interrupted by her filming Boyz In The Hood. I think this had a lot to do with her story, or lack of at times. She had a big story with David summer of â93 with the racist. Still, they dropped the ball writing for Nia.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | September 12, 2022 10:54 PM |

GL was a 15 minute show paired with Search for Tomorrow for the first 16 years of its TV run. Search aired at 12:30 p.m., followed by GL at 12:45 p.m. That mean school kids couldn't see the show except during the summer or holiday.
In 1968 when GL expanded to half an hour and moved to the 2:30 p.m. time slot, that's when school kids would have been able to see it throughout the entire year.
The Jim and Martha Frazier characters were on the canvas in 1966. So, not much chance of school children seen much of that storyline.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | September 13, 2022 12:25 AM |
Back story about "Made In America" - Whoopi Goldberg insisted that Nia Long play her daughter (they had originally cast Thandee Newton)
Whoopi used her influence to not only get her cast, but convince P&G to give her the time off to do the film.

by Anonymous | reply 169 | September 13, 2022 12:49 AM |
R160, That's probably because black actresses are in an industry -- a world -- that believes these women should be happy to have work at all. Their talent, beauty, and fanbases don't matter. Despite daytime television's overwhelmingly African American audience, the old guard continues to cater to an old (and dying) demographic.
I remember when Renee Elise Goldsberry was practically pushed out of One Life to Live after her character had helped carry the show in the previous year. The show low-balled her, so she had no choice but to leave. Evangeline was never one of my favorites, but I understood her importance on the show and for the audience.
I was glad when she became such a force on Broadway and in primetime. Leaving was the best thing that could have happened to her.

The idea for Holly to have a relationship with a woman went back to the Claire Labine era. Either Claire came up with the idea or it emerged when Claire was talking to Maureen Garrett, but it was ultimately nixed by the network or P&G.
Some of that idea eventually became the Otalia storyline. I think that it was two women who hadn't necessarily been involved with women before but just fell in love, that was the idea with Holly and whoever it might have been. (I want to say Olivia was part of that idea too but I'm a bit hazy on that part. I'm sure some of those Otaliastans would know.)
