Bay City's hottest vacation rental: 10 Underhill Terrace

Much cleaner than that grimy old Reardon Boarding House.

The owner is a lovely hostess, although her eyes bug out so far it almost made me jump out of my skin!

Margie, you've sold me! I'm heading back to town to visit.

Let's grab a beer and compare notes. Although there probably isn't all that much to talk about since we were both in Bay City so briefly -- 7 weeks for you, 13 weeks for me!

Bert and I used to double team at the boarding house.

I'd be in Tony's room while she was in Kelly's room. Then we'd switch rooms.

Of course, once Jim Reardon came back to town, we were both fighting to get in his room first.

I had the hots for Quentin Ames (Peter Ratray). Is Ratray still alive? Pretty sure he was gay.

by Anonymousreply 20September 2, 2022 7:27 PM

Was it a requirement that in order to play Jamie Frame, you had to be gay in real life?

by Anonymousreply 21September 2, 2022 7:35 PM

Stephen Yates wasn’t. And I don’t think the first one to play adult Jamie (Tim Holcomb) was, either.

by Anonymousreply 22September 2, 2022 8:47 PM

I tend to agree with R22 since they never sucked MY cock.

by Anonymousreply 23September 2, 2022 9:27 PM

Let’s ask lazy Bev McKinsey what she thinks. The woman was constantly complaining about being overworked with her 46 weeks of vacation.

by Anonymousreply 24September 2, 2022 10:49 PM

Has it been confirmed that Laurence Lau is gay? The only thing I know about the Jamies is that Bekins' was Wyndham's favorite and they're still in touch. Apparently the only people from the show she still hangs out with are Bekins, Sandy Ferguson, and Matt Crane. I found that interesting.

by Anonymousreply 25September 3, 2022 12:21 AM

R25, The actors mentioned played her children. Perhaps the good relationship stemmed from her taking them under her wing and showing them the ropes. I note that these three were also the youngest versions of Rachel's children (after the child actors, of course). So they probably didn't have as much experience or knowledge to fall back on.

Meanwhile, Laurence Lau had already been a hit on All My Children. Russell Todd was in his 30s when he took the role. There would definitely be a different dynamic. Maybe neither went running to Wyndham for advice or a helping hand.

by Anonymousreply 26September 3, 2022 9:49 AM

Lau has always had a female wife/partner officially and in print, but there's been longstanding gossip that he has always played on the side with men - a club where his fellow members include Michael E. Knight and Michael Park. I don't know if he's cruising the bookstores as Park is said to have done, but let's just say I've heard enough from a few NYC based friends to convince me.

As far as La Wyndham bonding with her on screen children, I do know she and Matt Crane both had art and sculpting as a shared passion, so that likely bonded them outside of the show.

What she said in 2007 about her relationships with AW costars (which sounds sane, and like any coworker at anyone's job):

[quote] Well, if it’s a real friendship that will transcend the work situation, then you carry that one over. There are people I have carried on with. Charles, Connie Ford was a good friend, Douglass was a good friend. Sandy Ferguson was a good friend. Matt, I hung out a lot with him out in California when I was out there for those years after the show folded. But you don’t carry that with everybody. People go their separate ways. You run into them and you’re happy to see them, then you go your separate ways. It’s sort of the bittersweet, but wonderful thing, about show business. Nobody hangs on.

Vicky seems very moody.

by Anonymousreply 28September 3, 2022 3:30 PM

Some actors are definitely like Lady Eyes A-Buggin' (and there is nothing wrong with that). But it's pretty damn clear that some casts (like late era GL) are more than just co-workers.

by Anonymousreply 29September 3, 2022 3:35 PM

I don't think she's moody, I just think she's not fake. She's not one of those actors who would go on talk shows and talk about how the cast is a family and all that bullshit. I think she has a very realistic view of what the show was, why she was doing the show and what she wanted out of the show. She was #1 on the call sheet, but she was never treated like Lucci, Hall, or Slezak and I'm not sure she wanted to be.

My feeling from reading her various interviews is that she feels she did her best work in the 70s under Lemay and Rauch and everything after that the character was just filler, but it paid for her life. Three houses, supporting two sons, and a sculpting career as a side hustle. That's a pretty good deal.

I wish I knew more about what she wrote for the show.

by Anonymousreply 30September 3, 2022 3:39 PM

I completely agree that VW had every right to do and be what and who she was. I just don't think her experience is the only kind of experience soap actors have. It isn't like a stage play where you hang out with people constantly for two years then never see them again. These people work together for decades, through pregnancies, marriages, divorces, deaths. They are family. VW chose one things, others choose another.

by Anonymousreply 31September 3, 2022 3:46 PM

I think a set is just like any workplace. One or two people you may develop off the clock friendships with, but most you don't. I think VW is the rule and not the exception. I think fans want to believe that the actors are like their characters and that everyone is buddy buddy, I just don't believe that.

by Anonymousreply 32September 3, 2022 3:53 PM

I disagree, but I think we have exhausted this particular topic.

by Anonymousreply 33September 3, 2022 3:55 PM

I recall various soap boards I've visited over the years where fans went to war over this subject. "Well, of course, they're all friends!" My favorites were the fraus and trolls who dedicated entire threads to whether their favorite ship were friends in real life or not. If there were dueling ships (there was usually a man at the center) the base who thought their couple got along best in real life "won."

I think of soap sets as being like any job. It's work. There will be some folks you like. Other people not so much. And still more that you don't know very well at all. No big deal.

The magic of television has made many people believe their favorite characters carry those relationships offscreen. They often become very disappointed when they discover that their favorite couple or besties weren't particularly close.

Lucky for me that I've always been a contrarian. All my favorite couples are rumored to have hated and/or only tolerated each other in real life. Never hurt their chemistry for me, so I never gave a damn.

by Anonymousreply 34September 3, 2022 4:41 PM

Connie Ford wasn’t friends with anyone. She was a miserable old cunt.

by Anonymousreply 35September 3, 2022 4:53 PM

I was professional with my coworkers but we were NOT friends. This is work, not El Morocco.

I certainly would never spend my spare time with a drunk tramp like Colleen Zenk, or that tramp Kathleen Widdoes, who traumatized the homosexual boys in the cast by flashing her large, sagging breasts at them.

Are there stories of Slezak being a diva?

by Anonymousreply 37September 3, 2022 5:15 PM

The guy who played Nash on OLTL told Alan Locher that Miss Sleestack tried to get him fired. So there are stories out there.

by Anonymousreply 38September 3, 2022 5:38 PM

R26, Tim Holcomb was the first “adult” Jamie after Bobby Doran was SORAS’d. He was only on for a few months, though. He was first seen in scenes in Wyoming (?) with Blaine.

by Anonymousreply 39September 3, 2022 6:13 PM

The whole AW company hated Bev McKinsey and her constant complaining. She held up production with her incessant demands, breaks, and vacations. Vicky W. didn’t have the time to whine to the press about her long hours.

by Anonymousreply 40September 3, 2022 6:14 PM

r38

by Anonymousreply 41September 3, 2022 6:20 PM

I can see the late era GL folks really bonding. Many of them were show veterans already, and for better or worse, Wheeler did a lot of stuff (like the Habitat for Humanity thing) that helped bond them as fighters to the end.

I liked what Wyndham said - you are always happy to see a coworker or former co star but not necessarily seeking them out otherwise. Many women, like Wyndham, McKinsey, et al were single moms raising children. If a particular star wasn't on 5 days a week front burner, it could be a nice way to make a living and still have some chance for time with family.

by Anonymousreply 42September 3, 2022 7:08 PM

[quote] Are there stories of Slezak being a diva?

She told ABC to get us black bitches out of her face!

by Anonymousreply 43September 3, 2022 7:08 PM

Like who would have ever thought that Deidre Hall and Jane Elliot would be besties, but they are. Two very different actresses with two very different soap experiences, but they're pals. And there are the hottest soap couples in the history of the form who loathed each other in real life. I guess all that loathing reads as sexual chemistry. But I agree, I think fans want actors to be like the characters. Most of them have work relationships that begin and end at the office and maybe at a cast party.

by Anonymousreply 50September 4, 2022 2:46 PM

Alan Locher did a one-on-one session with Robert Newman this week.

First half of the hour is talking a lot about his six-month stint on Y&R as Ashland Locke and some plays he just did.

Second half, he talks a lot about his 28 years with GL. Some of the tidbits he reveals are that Doug Marland was furious about P&G interference with his scripts, so Marland started turning in his scripts just a day before the tape date to prevent interference.

Similarly, he said Marland wanted to be out of communication with P&G for a while, so he took a part in a musical performing somewhere along Cap Cod.

Additionally, he said Michelle Forbes had no interest in being in soaps and was mentally checked out even while she was performing Sonni/Solita.

Also said he was not planning to renew his contract when it expired in 2008 since it was obvious GL was going to be cancelled soon. But his wife talked him into renewing saying the Josh should be in the final show.

The GL talk starts about 32:00 in.

by Anonymousreply 51September 5, 2022 3:07 AM

I didn't realize that he was on GL at the same time as Marland. I thought Pam Long brought the Lewises on.

by Anonymousreply 52September 5, 2022 3:17 AM

Assuming Soap Central is right, Josh debuted in October 1981, just over a month after Trish and at least a half-year before Marland left.

by Anonymousreply 53September 5, 2022 3:22 AM

[quote] I thought Pam Long brought the Lewises on.

Josh was on long before Pam hit the scene

his first storyline was battling John Wesley Shipp (kelly) for the love of Morgan (Jennifer Cooke)

by Anonymousreply 54September 5, 2022 3:26 AM

Thank you. I learned something new tonight. Totally thought the Lewises were Pam Long's version of the Marshalls on Texas. I guess she just fleshed them out.

by Anonymousreply 55September 5, 2022 3:29 AM

No, Josh and Trish were both on in the Marland years. Pam expanded them and brought on the southern element - ergo Billy, H.B. and eventually Reva at the end of 1983.

by Anonymousreply 56September 5, 2022 3:38 AM

If Michelle Forbes was mentally checked out she sure as fuck gave one of the best soap performances of all time.

by Anonymousreply 57September 5, 2022 3:41 AM

Seriously. She was mesmerizing.

But she seems to have had mental health issues and was probably channeling that, much as Frank Beaty did in later years.

Sometimes actors pull from within and that dance can take you awfully close to the fire. Michael Morrison.....and that redheaded actress who played on the early years of the Doctors....among others.

Michelle Forbes would say about acting on Guiding Light

"Everyday I have to cry or be on edge. It gets crazy sometimes. When I got hired to do a soap, I thought I'd get to wear pretty clothes and talk about who's sleeping with whom - well, we're talking religion, sex, guilt, rejection, loyalty, greed - there are some serious issues here, not what I would have expected at all."

by Anonymousreply 60September 5, 2022 3:46 AM

I find it interesting that people talk about Marland's writing on GL and then they just skip to Pam Long's tenure. What happened during the years between Marland and Long? The writers were Pat Falken Smith, then they had that awful L. Virginia Browne, Gene Palumbo and then the Cullitons.

by Anonymousreply 61September 5, 2022 3:46 AM

R59 That clip does not do Michelle justice. That storyline was peak soap opera. I know it kind of happened by accident with the writers strike but the end result was every thing you want in a soap storyline at the highest quality. The story, with its crazy twists and turns, was one thing, but watching Michelle and Kim go toe to toe was another. Both were of the highest quality. I feel sorry for people who weren’t able to witness this play out on GL. Had GL rode into this storyline from a better place it would have been #1 in the ratings. Unfortunately, it came off two terrible years- 1986/87.

by Anonymousreply 62September 5, 2022 3:57 AM

Marland sure was a prissy old queen.

by Anonymousreply 63September 5, 2022 3:57 AM

R60 Her quote nails the quality of GL at the time. That storyline dealt with some heavy issues (abuse, suicide, even porn). For a daytime soap it was borderline scandalous. Both actresses knew they’d met their matches and watching them try to outdo each other was wow.

by Anonymousreply 64September 5, 2022 4:02 AM

The Sonni/Solita story may have been even better if it hadn't turned into a noodly - yet still compelling - mess for a bit during the 1988 strike.

by Anonymousreply 65September 5, 2022 4:04 AM

R65 I think the strike honestly helped it a bit. It gave it some really interesting twists I’m not sure would’ve happened otherwise.

by Anonymousreply 66September 5, 2022 4:09 AM

Serial Monticello nutcase is at it again. Ugh!

by Anonymousreply 67September 5, 2022 4:23 AM

[quote]I find it interesting that people talk about Marland's writing on GL and then they just skip to Pam Long's tenure. What happened during the years between Marland and Long? The writers were Pat Falken Smith, then they had that awful L. Virginia Browne, Gene Palumbo and then the Cullitons.

Actually, it was only 8 months between Marland and Pam Long. Marland's last scripts aired in mid-September 1982. Pam's first scripts aired in late May 1983.

And of course during those 8 months between the two, that long list of writers had Marland's Bible to work with. Not that they followed it all, but they had it to guide them.

by Anonymousreply 68September 5, 2022 6:31 AM

Marland was a sicko. He had Gloria Monty’s face etched into his toilet so he could shit on her. And the things he made JWS do to get his job. It involved toes. Gross!!!

Eileen McLarty had to memorize her Marland while on the can. Her visits to the ladies room were notorious! Everyone always wondered what she was feeding herself! Poor Kathy Hays fainted in the hallway when she walked by!

by Anonymousreply 71September 5, 2022 2:01 PM

I just remember PFS's brief HW tenure began with a huge truck slamming into the boarding house.

P&G's idea of action adventure I suppose.

by Anonymousreply 72September 5, 2022 3:23 PM

I know you're not supposed dive to deep into Doug Marland outside of his writing on these threads, but from the little tidbits that come out about him from various actors in these interviews, he does seem... "complicated"

by Anonymousreply 73September 5, 2022 4:17 PM

Marland hated working with Agnes Nixon on Loving.

by Anonymousreply 74September 5, 2022 4:57 PM

R73 We can deep dive all we want!

And Marland was a middle aged former actor. And a theater queen who liked the best things in life. I would imagine he'd have to be a somewhat complex, nuanced individual for those stories to spring forth from his head.

by Anonymousreply 75September 5, 2022 5:02 PM

Marland was never the same after Eileen exploded in his Gloria Monty toilet.

by Anonymousreply 76September 5, 2022 5:14 PM

I know Long's run was popular, and her writing definietly exuded a type of warm and fuzzy feeling Marland was just not capable of, but ultimately she really dumbed down the show from what it had been under Marland.

by Anonymousreply 77September 5, 2022 5:15 PM

I could see Newman not wanting to renew circa 2008. That hideous Josh/Cassie business had happened and he was pretty much set decoration at that point.

by Anonymousreply 79September 5, 2022 8:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 80September 5, 2022 8:11 PM

Shhhh.

by Anonymousreply 81September 5, 2022 8:17 PM

What shade R80? Where?

by Anonymousreply 82September 5, 2022 8:21 PM

R51, the musical Doug Marland ended up doing in the Cape Cod area during his “estrangement” from P&G was Gypsy! He played Herbie. I wonder who played Rose.

The Robert Newman one on one with Alan was quite interesting. Good for Newman, a thoroughly mediocre actor, getting to play Don Quixote and other roles he’d never have gotten a chance to play other than at the Barn Theatre in Bumfuck, Michigan.

R75, I’ve told this before and I’ll tell it again-about a year before he died I spotted Marland in London in the lobby of the play Dancing in Lughnasa. I stopped to tell him how much I loved his work on ATWT and how touched I was by Alice Haining’s performance when Angel took the stand. I know
MARY! Anyway, Marland was noticeably shocked by this and called his male companion over and asked me to repeat what I’d just said. I would assume he loved Dancing at Lughnasa, a kitchen sink drama centered on a large family.

by Anonymousreply 83September 5, 2022 8:43 PM

Newman himself was never a draw, it was always about the female actors he was paired with. Michelle Forbes, Cynthia Watros, Kim Zimmer, and to a lesser extent Beth Ehlers. I laughed when he had to point out that Rauch couldn't bully him since on his own he had no pull or power, it was always about the other actors. He rode their coattails. On his own, Josh was void of personality, humanity, or any interesting qualities, and Newman is a dud actor.

People watching Y&R seemed to be surprised by his ‘range’ but to me was playing the same part, it was just characterized differently by the show. Josh was arrogant, patronizing, condescending, lying, manipulative, and a real dick but GL wrapped all of that up in a tidy good-guy package and said ‘he’s not horrible, he’s just flawed.’ Ashland exhibited the same qualities except no one was apologizing for it, least of all the character. There’s no stellar acting here, it’s that the narrative from the show was different. I can’t believe people don’t pick up on this.

Douggie Marland’s toes were the best!

Oh shit! Dumb Dylan was the 2nd to post the The Bay is coming to Peacock. Memo to Dumb Dylan: No one cares. Memo #2 to Dumb Dylan: Someone beat you to this ‘breaking’ news. Memo #3 to Dumb Dylan: YOU ARE DUMB!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 112September 7, 2022 8:34 PM

When AW aired on soapnet, it literally got a 0.0 rating in the 18-49 demo. I don't think the 93-year-old nursing home biddies who were familiar with this show knew how to find soapnet.

by Anonymousreply 114September 9, 2022 4:52 AM

Dumb Dylan is so fucking dumb. He thinks that he’s an influencer with all the breaking soap news.

by Anonymousreply 116September 9, 2022 8:44 AM

Dumb Dylan HAS THE SCOOP! Kookoo wants you to know she hasn’t slept since Anne Heche died! Fat soap twitter queens love to “remember” major soap events that happened when they were 3! Vee is IN THE BIZ, YOU KNOW! THE BIZ!

by Anonymousreply 117September 9, 2022 10:20 AM

When is Queen Locher's tribute to Anne Heche?

by Anonymousreply 118September 9, 2022 12:29 PM

Alan Locher is desperately trying to get KooKoosadora on his tribute show to F’ANNE Heche but kookoo is too busy mourning the death of Another World 23 fucking years ago. Kookoo is still not over it. Alan will have to pivot and get crabby Vetsoapfan to spend an hour talking about how dropping THE from GL ruined his life almost 50 years ago. Such personal drama that these fake serials caused.

by Anonymousreply 119September 9, 2022 12:42 PM

Where is the SON you've ever given him?

by Anonymousreply 120September 9, 2022 2:59 PM

I have no knowledge of the big ones on AW or ATWT. Only GL 😎

Fat pig Casey is battling TV Source on twitter. TVSource is correct. Casey is a big, fat phoney. Homely moonface is having a meltdown.

by Anonymousreply 122September 10, 2022 8:31 AM

anyway....

by Anonymousreply 123September 10, 2022 5:10 PM

Carmen Duncan was a decent actress, but it seemed like the show didn’t know what to do with Iris after Mac died.

Iris should have fallen in love with a man with a bitchy, manipulative, possessive daughter, like Iris was in the 70s.

We could have seen her come full circle with Rachel-until Iris started manipulating the lives of Jamie, Matt and Amanda in the interest of protecting the Cory name. Iris and Rachel should have had a rivlary like Kay and Jill on Y&R through rhe remaining run of the show.

by Anonymousreply 124September 10, 2022 5:18 PM

Unfortunately, Pete Lemay didn't write his bible that far ahead, and Donna Swajeski didn't think of that when she "wrote" AW after his departure. Her "writing" went in another direction.

by Anonymousreply 125September 10, 2022 6:07 PM

Weren’t Iris and Michael together at one point? Shame Carmen Duncan and Kale Browne looked like twins. If she was with a different actor as Michael it would have been fun seeing her tussle with Vicky,

by Anonymousreply 126September 10, 2022 6:13 PM

They were, R126.

And then I came back and put an immediate stop to that nonsense.

Was the only one who preferred sexy Philece over dull Anna Banana?

by Anonymousreply 130September 11, 2022 6:04 AM

Philece was wonderful as Donna!

by Anonymousreply 131September 11, 2022 9:44 AM

Anna is just so dour and matronly. Philece brought in some much needed energy and sexual vitality. She was a good recast.

by Anonymousreply 132September 11, 2022 12:59 PM

R132, sez you and literally nobody else.

by Anonymousreply 133September 11, 2022 1:22 PM

KooKoo is trying to bring back THE Another World! There will be a protest at noon in Central Park! All of the actors want the show back on air! Casey from Twitter and his podcast actors will fill in for JB!

by Anonymousreply 134September 11, 2022 1:57 PM

Vee who is in the biz you know is terrorizing posters at SON again! Pretty soon its just going to be Vee who is in the biz, Eeyore Carl, Dumbass Dylan, PervSudz, gross amc2008, and kookoo posting on that board.

by Anonymousreply 135September 11, 2022 8:11 PM

Verificatia of Richard Bekins size meat?

by Anonymousreply 136September 11, 2022 10:14 PM

Bekins is shooting an HBO Max series called Girls on the Bus. He plays a politician. A friend of a friend knows someone in the costume department on that. I’ll see what I can do.

by Anonymousreply 137September 11, 2022 10:22 PM

kookoo went to Anne Heche’s funeral. She was a true F’Anne. She still isn’t over the death of THE Another World either.

by Anonymousreply 138September 11, 2022 10:31 PM

I could believe that Bekins was the Jamie with the biggest cock.

by Anonymousreply 139September 11, 2022 11:43 PM

And Russell Todd was the Jamie with the most stretched out hole, clearly.

Has there ever been a crazy recasting as Billy Dee Williams to James Earl Jones and at the same time Ruby Dee to Cicely Tyson on Guiding Light in the 60s? Icon to Icon, Icon to Icon. And two huge Star Wars actors. They were also the first regularly featured black characters on a daytime show. Any of you elder gays remember them?

by Anonymousreply 141September 12, 2022 10:36 AM

I would be interested in hearing about their storylines too, R141.

I'm currently re-watching Guiding Light 1993. David and Gilly Grant and Kat and Hampton Speakes are the black cast members. They are, of course, off on their own island. David gets to save Bridget and Hart from themselves from time to time. And he's always there for one of the white kids to "talk to." David and Bridget would have been a good couple given the actors' chemistry, but even 17 year old me knew it would never happen. Old grannies would cry murder. And this is back when they still had to write letters to share their outrage.

Meanwhile, gorgeous Nia Long only had eyes for David (after a brief dalliance with Jesse L Martin), despite hotties like Hart, Dylan, and even youngish Alan-Michael, running around Springfield. I was happy when she left the show and began doing films.

by Anonymousreply 142September 12, 2022 11:48 AM

The 90 year old grannies who watched THE Guiding Light did not want to see black people on screen, much less see an interracial romance. They would have spontaneously imploded. It was called THE Guiding Light, not THE Guiding Dark.

by Anonymousreply 143September 12, 2022 12:00 PM

TGL made a huge mistake by not at least trying Gilly and Alan Michael. Those two actors had sizzling chemistry.

by Anonymousreply 144September 12, 2022 12:05 PM

I agree, R144. I was looking forward to it, but it never materialized. Amelia and Rick even mentioned it during their Locher interview. They knew what the fans wanted.

Kat and David got screen time maybe four days per month. Three of those days were usually them discussing BRIDGET's story. Seriously, I was amazed that two horny kids would spend their time together discussing someone else's love life and not their own. I guess the racists would have changed the channel if their conversations had been about their own story. Or the lack of it. One of the four days was usually dedicated to David getting himself together after leaving behind his criminal past.

It's the same on every soap I've watched. As I re-watch 1994 OLTL, RJ Gannon is introduced - criminal past, islanded off with other black folks, only allowed periphery contact with the main characters despite Tim Stickney's deep charisma. And this era of OLTL had some of the worst male actors the show ever had, IMO.

Same thing for a character from Another World. Forgot his name, but it's the same template: troubled, criminal past, worked at Cass's law office, comic relief/talk-to character, only allowed to "play" with black characters created specifically for that purpose.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

by Anonymousreply 145September 12, 2022 12:17 PM

It’s amazing Quinn Harding was on AW for so long. Her character was a block of ice and the same was apparently true Petronia Paley. She was described by one of my crew friends as “Ellen Holly on meds, a chip on her shoulder a mile wide.”

by Anonymousreply 146September 12, 2022 2:02 PM

R143 lol

by Anonymousreply 147September 12, 2022 2:17 PM

On the one hand it seems that every actress of color is said to have an attitude or issues - Petronia, Ellen, Vicki Rowell.

On the other hand....every one of them was treated as window dressing for the white performers. Even Rowell, though she went higher and farther than anyone else on daytime except for Debbi Morgan.

by Anonymousreply 148September 12, 2022 2:21 PM

Isn’t Monti Sharp a homosexualist?

by Anonymousreply 149September 12, 2022 3:16 PM

Rowell had by far the most interesting, well developed role for a Black person on daytime. Debbi Morgan’s Angie on AMC was often a simpering saint.

by Anonymousreply 150September 12, 2022 3:38 PM

I keep meaning to watch AMC during the Angie/Jesse's ascent. I've heard so much that they broke barriers. Yet, I've also heard that they mainly played talk-tos for characters like Greg and Jenny. Which one is it? Well, now that I think on it, it can be both. Angie/Jesse was probably revolutionary for the time (even as they nursed/saved the headlining white characters). I'm getting plenty of that from GL, AW, and OLTL, so I've been dragging my feet on watching.

Dru is legendary, but I doubt I'll ever do a Y&R watch. I've just never enjoyed that show. Slow as molasses. So dull. My Silent Generation great-aunts and grandmothers loved that show.

by Anonymousreply 151September 12, 2022 4:07 PM

Ada’s on the rag again. She needs snatch!

by Anonymousreply 152September 12, 2022 4:28 PM

I'll never understand your obsession with an elder dyke's sex life and tampon usage, R152.

Though I'll confess to liking being obsessed over.

Thank you for all you do.

by Anonymousreply 153September 12, 2022 4:50 PM

Mel on GL was at least somewhat interesting. She was allowed to have some opinions, etc. and she left Rick. I mean who wouldn't.

Yvonna Wright was OK but just couldn't give Mel the nuances that could have been great.

Gilly was very interesting and was ambitious. Even if she hit the GL stereotype of "We have a black character so their dream must be.....to be a singer/jazz musician in a nightclub!"

by Anonymousreply 154September 12, 2022 6:17 PM

Gilly was by far the most appealing of the three IIMO. The other two were just box ticks for divesity’s sake.

by Anonymousreply 155September 12, 2022 6:22 PM

Brandon Spaulding’s mixed race daughter Victoria should have been cast with a much stronger, charismatic actress. She might have had longevity on the show.

by Anonymousreply 156September 12, 2022 6:24 PM

As the World Turns had African-American characters/actresses who were not portrayed as stereotypes or played by women characterized as difficult.

Jessica Griffin

Denise Maynard (the mother of Kim and John's grandchild!)

and my personal favorite...Camille Bennett!!!!

And they were given strong men with which to interact (Black and White) and communities. Remember the church fire and Rev. Dansby? Remember Roy Franklin and the Franklin family including Nella? They even had black villains on ATWT.

by Anonymousreply 158September 12, 2022 10:52 PM

It really is something two legendary actors, and legendary Star Wars actors at that, replaced each other on GL. Add to that the actresses playing their wives being legendary in their own right is a fascinating bit of soap trivia. Come on, no one has memories of them?

Nia Long’s stint on GL was interrupted by her filming Boyz In The Hood. I think this had a lot to do with her story, or lack of at times. She had a big story with David summer of ‘93 with the racist. Still, they dropped the ball writing for Nia.

by Anonymousreply 159September 12, 2022 10:54 PM

It is really unfortunate that some black soap actresses have been treated so poorly and called names. They wanted fair treatment, but ended up being called pushy, angry, crazy, and a host of other things.

by Anonymousreply 160September 12, 2022 11:52 PM

R159 We're old but not quite that old.

Don't mean that in a cunty way but to really remember you'd have to have been at least 6 or 7 during their runs, so born 1960 or earlier.

by Anonymousreply 161September 13, 2022 12:13 AM

Actually she filmed Boyz in the Hood BEFORE she auditioned for Guiding Light. She took time off to film the movie "Made In America"

by Anonymousreply 162September 13, 2022 12:15 AM

I'm surprised La Locher hasn't interviewed Miss Nia.

by Anonymousreply 163September 13, 2022 12:18 AM

R162 I stand corrected!

by Anonymousreply 164September 13, 2022 12:20 AM

GL was a 15 minute show paired with Search for Tomorrow for the first 16 years of its TV run. Search aired at 12:30 p.m., followed by GL at 12:45 p.m. That mean school kids couldn't see the show except during the summer or holiday.

In 1968 when GL expanded to half an hour and moved to the 2:30 p.m. time slot, that's when school kids would have been able to see it throughout the entire year.

The Jim and Martha Frazier characters were on the canvas in 1966. So, not much chance of school children seen much of that storyline.

by Anonymousreply 165September 13, 2022 12:25 AM

Back story about "Made In America" - Whoopi Goldberg insisted that Nia Long play her daughter (they had originally cast Thandee Newton)

Whoopi used her influence to not only get her cast, but convince P&G to give her the time off to do the film.

by Anonymousreply 166September 13, 2022 12:28 AM

It will always be THE Guiding Light to me!!!!

by Anonymousreply 167September 13, 2022 12:42 AM

*flush*

by Anonymousreply 168September 13, 2022 12:45 AM

If someone was in their early 70s or older they could have seen them on GL in 1966. DLers claim to be 70s and 80s.

by Anonymousreply 169September 13, 2022 12:49 AM

R160, That's probably because black actresses are in an industry -- a world -- that believes these women should be happy to have work at all. Their talent, beauty, and fanbases don't matter. Despite daytime television's overwhelmingly African American audience, the old guard continues to cater to an old (and dying) demographic.

I remember when Renee Elise Goldsberry was practically pushed out of One Life to Live after her character had helped carry the show in the previous year. The show low-balled her, so she had no choice but to leave. Evangeline was never one of my favorites, but I understood her importance on the show and for the audience.

I was glad when she became such a force on Broadway and in primetime. Leaving was the best thing that could have happened to her.

by Anonymousreply 170September 13, 2022 10:08 AM

Mo Garrett wanted Holly Reade to become a lezzy.

by Anonymousreply 171September 13, 2022 11:27 AM

After the trauma of Roger Thorpe, that might have made sense for Holly, IMO.

by Anonymousreply 172September 13, 2022 11:51 AM

A Holly/Hillary/Jennifer Richards triangle would've been lez heaven.

by Anonymousreply 173September 13, 2022 1:25 PM

Hillary was very manly.

by Anonymousreply 174September 13, 2022 2:56 PM

The idea for Holly to have a relationship with a woman went back to the Claire Labine era. Either Claire came up with the idea or it emerged when Claire was talking to Maureen Garrett, but it was ultimately nixed by the network or P&G.

Some of that idea eventually became the Otalia storyline. I think that it was two women who hadn't necessarily been involved with women before but just fell in love, that was the idea with Holly and whoever it might have been. (I want to say Olivia was part of that idea too but I'm a bit hazy on that part. I'm sure some of those Otaliastans would know.)

Connie was a broad. She was generally playing herself!

La Locher shared this on social media this morning - the actress who played Carol on ATWT for most of the 70s is fighting cancer and there's a GoFundMe.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 179September 14, 2022 6:05 PM

Damn she was ATWT’s young heroine for most of the 70s.

Too bad they couldn’t bring her back for a visit during the Marland years, but they de-SORASed Tom at some point, so she would have lookex like Tom’s aunt, not his first wife.

by Anonymousreply 180September 14, 2022 6:21 PM

She played Carol aka “Sterile Carol.” Carol wasn’t allowed to have a baby with Tom because of Eileen Fulton’s “grandmother clause” in her contract.

by Anonymousreply 181September 15, 2022 12:53 AM

Does La Locher remember his first day on The Locher Room?
