40 Years of Pendulousness

Can it really be 40 years since The Pendulous One first poked us in the eye?

Damn it, this posted twice. Please use this one.

by Anonymousreply 1September 23, 2022 11:57 PM

Soap star?

by Anonymousreply 2September 23, 2022 11:58 PM

Yes, there should be a commemorative picture.

And a replica of his gravity defying dong, too.

by Anonymousreply 3September 23, 2022 11:59 PM

If memory serves, Grant's wife was an Assistant District Attorney in Monmouth County, New Jersey.

by Anonymousreply 4September 24, 2022 12:01 AM

Grant is a good egg.

Kinda thin lips, but okay.

by Anonymousreply 6September 24, 2022 12:03 AM

No wonder he's Pendulous, he's a Pole .... Birth name Grant Aleksander Kunkowski,

by Anonymousreply 7September 24, 2022 12:04 AM

Thin lips, maybe.

And the biggest, juiciest Polish kielbasa you've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 8September 24, 2022 12:04 AM

[quote]And a replica of his gravity defying dong, too.

What do you think "pendulous" means, r3? (hint: it's pretty much the opposite of "gravity-defying.")

Of course, it can be both at different times. Versatility!

by Anonymousreply 9September 24, 2022 12:04 AM

It's pendulous in that it hangs with a great deal of girth.

by Anonymousreply 10September 24, 2022 12:05 AM

Wow, seven children…he did get around.

by Anonymousreply 11September 24, 2022 12:06 AM

Oh, pics or it’s just wishful drinking.

by Anonymousreply 12September 24, 2022 12:07 AM

There was a poster here who has seen it - in a restroom. Very descriptive. This was a few years back.

I believe them/him.

by Anonymousreply 13September 24, 2022 12:14 AM

I wish the scene where he's all chubbed up in his very short gym shorts was still on YT.

by Anonymousreply 14September 24, 2022 12:20 AM

Chris Bernau got a boner every time they had scenes together.

The vinegary Helen Wagner was disgusted at how Eileen always plugged up the toilet. What the fuck did that woman eat?????

by Anonymousreply 24September 26, 2022 12:20 AM

I remember when he was on Who's The Boss? for a beefcake calendar episode and wooed Angela.

by Anonymousreply 25September 26, 2022 12:33 AM

Wardrobe had a hard time getting the stains out of the Lisa character’s clothes. They started making Eileen bring her own clothing. Sometimes she would leave the studio cheeks clenched and with a stain on her behind.

Did Kookoo get ATWT a bench in Central Park?

by Anonymousreply 29September 26, 2022 12:48 AM

I have been campaigning for 50 years to bring THE back to THE Guiding Light. Pam Long ruined my life!!!

by Anonymousreply 30September 26, 2022 12:51 AM

When the toilet plugger’s shit smell permeated the hallways, Helen Wagner could be heard screaming ‘I drove down from Katonah for THIS???’

by Anonymousreply 31September 26, 2022 12:56 AM

R29 Of course KooKoo the activist got ATWT a bench in Central Park. Unfortunately at the dedication ceremony, a certain veteran actress sat on it and took a shit and it was ruined.

by Anonymousreply 32September 26, 2022 1:00 AM

I first saw him on the Guiding Light.

by Anonymousreply 35September 26, 2022 1:25 AM

I wish he’d stayed longer on AMC…he was really good as a villain, and his sex scenes with Arlene were hot!

by Anonymousreply 36September 26, 2022 1:33 AM

Where are the cock shots?

by Anonymousreply 37September 26, 2022 1:35 AM

I've read this whole thread and I don't know if I'm coming or going.

by Anonymousreply 38September 26, 2022 1:39 AM

His longest running role was Philip, of course.

But I remember when he was on Capitol as DJ. He was in literally nothing but a Speedo for most of a summer. It makes me wonder if John Conboy had a thing for him, too.

by Anonymousreply 39September 26, 2022 4:02 AM

It's too bad the Daytime Emmys didn't have its Younger Actor category back when Grant first started on GL.

He could have won for his 1983 scenes at the reveal that Justin, not Alan, was his biological father.

Unfortunately, the Younger Actor category started in 1985.

by Anonymousreply 47September 27, 2022 1:49 PM

I prefer to think of Philip, Tony Reardon and Kelly Nelson in a sauna.

Or those gentleman and a bottle of baby oil, on the night of Springfield's blackout.

by Anonymousreply 48September 27, 2022 1:53 PM

The video about about Phillip's parental reveal has me wondering. Justin and Jackie were Phillip's biological parents. So how did Alan and Elizabeth Spaulding end up with baby Phillip?

by Anonymousreply 49September 27, 2022 4:33 PM

Explained here - Alan bought the baby from Jackie.

Grant is bigger than James Scott’s 13.5 x 8.5

by Anonymousreply 51September 27, 2022 9:51 PM

I never thought he was very attractive facially. Odd facial features. On the rec.arts.soaps.abc newsgroup some posters called him "Skeletor" and I could see it facially.

He has a good body though and also a good actor and apparently a nice guy in real life too.

I've seen more of his work on AMC than GL and I agree the storyline with Arlene was great. His acting during that storyline and especially the climax of that story was very good.

by Anonymousreply 52September 27, 2022 10:00 PM

I saw him a few years ago Off Broadway in "Perfect Crime" (he alternated as the police detective with Robert Newman), and unfortunately, he wears a very loose fitting suit so no tightness in the pendulous area. But that charisma was still present. He popped up as a bartender in a gay bar in "Tough Guys" starring Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster.

by Anonymousreply 53September 27, 2022 10:31 PM

[quote]I wish the scene where he's all chubbed up in his very short gym shorts was still on YT.

If you are talking about an erection being visible. I saw a doozie recently on the 1991 uploads of The Bold and the Beautiful. There is a scene where Todd McKee (Jake Maclaine) enters his apartment wearing his tennis uniform, (the scene is with the little brunette who played Brooke's younger sister) and for a couple of glorious seconds there is at least 10 inches clearly visible in his shorts. Almost poking up and out!

He seems embarrassed, and kind of manouvers away from the camera, picking up a few things around the apartment, and trying to conceal it with a bit of slack down there. But clearly, it is as thick and large as his forearm.

by Anonymousreply 58September 28, 2022 3:37 AM

Todd McKee has classic BDF.

by Anonymousreply 59September 28, 2022 3:45 AM

It doesn't surprise me that Jake slept with almost every female cast member of that show, even Stephanie hit on him.

by Anonymousreply 60September 28, 2022 3:46 AM

He was one of those actors who made me realize that I was gay. I only remember him on All My children. I remember thinking that he was kind of ugly looking, but he wore the tightest fucking jeans you could imagine. They must have been painted on. I could not keep my eyes off of his package.

by Anonymousreply 61September 28, 2022 4:06 AM

There was that scene where Arlene throws herself at Alec, who has just married Hayley and he realizes he HAS to sleep with her to keep her quiet; he looks at his watch to see if he has enough time to do her before Hayley starts to wonder where he was.

Alrene tries to leave but then Alec grabs her, SCOOPS HER UP IN HIS ARMS AND CARRIES HER TO BED. He didn't take his shirt off but I suppose he didn't need to.

Grant and JWS were two huge crushes in the early 80s as a gayling. Others included, a little later on, Don Diamont, Robert Tyler, James Wlcek, Trent Bushey, and Todd McKee.

by Anonymousreply 65September 28, 2022 4:40 AM

India was a big ole dyke.

by Anonymousreply 68September 28, 2022 12:27 PM

So, after all of this time and 68 prior postings here, I still have to ask, "Where is the 'pendulousness?'"

Give proof here via pics or else admit that the thread title is deceiving at best or at worst a nothingburger.

by Anonymousreply 69September 28, 2022 12:47 PM

Carl Tye Evans was so sexy to me. He eye-fucks Phillip so hard in that wrestling scene at R63.

He's gay right?

by Anonymousreply 70September 28, 2022 1:37 PM

R70, I don't think so. I don't think the pendulous one is either.

R68, yes, you can see in this holiday episode how Alan rejects AM and how Phillip sees it and tries to offer support, comfort....fuck. hold me big brother. Everything's going to be all right.

Phillip gave Alan a crystal gift and AM broke it on purpose because he felt hurt.

At one point Alan Michael had an epiphany and said he felt bad for Phillip b/c it must suck to be someone's sick obsession.

by Anonymousreply 71September 28, 2022 4:55 PM

Carl Evans is/was gay, per person I know in the soap press. (Personally, I much preferred Rick Hearst.)

by Anonymousreply 81September 28, 2022 9:05 PM

Oh please, Carl Evans is not gay. He's been married to a woman since 2004. But keep on dreaming.

by Anonymousreply 82September 28, 2022 9:32 PM

Just tellin' you what I heard, r82.

by Anonymousreply 83September 28, 2022 10:04 PM

R40 But Judi won for material the same year.

by Anonymousreply 84September 28, 2022 11:25 PM

Carl Evans is/was fine as hell. He’s really married? Too bad he had a very short scene on Sex And The City with Kim Cattrell. I’d have liked a full on sex scene.

by Anonymousreply 85September 28, 2022 11:32 PM

[quote]this may be a P&G thread but if you happen to find that B&B clip you have permission to post it here!

B&B should be okay to discuss, as it's officially happening in the same universe as P&G.

This was sometime during Jake's molestation storyline. Jake planned to flee the city with Donna played by Carrie Mitchum. Todd McKee did some very good acting, they don't usually write all that well for him. I usually skip through Jake's scenes so feel mighty grateful to have strumbled on that!

Jake is currently with Macy (bad match!), previously Felicia, then Donna. Bold and the Beautiful was strange in early 1991 with all the dark and wall-to-wall social drama, Stephanie being homeless and on Skid Row, and then Jake being molested by his uncle, with some good acting by Tippi Hedren who played Jake's mom.

by Anonymousreply 86September 29, 2022 12:36 AM

Carl Tye Evans is not gay. Jesus. All you old fat fraus think everyone is gay. Stop it.

by Anonymousreply 87September 29, 2022 2:08 AM

R81, a person in the soap press?

I doubt a closeted actor would come out to the Guiding Light editor at Soap Opera Weekly.

That's the last person in whom they'd confide.

GL made a big mistake by not having Kathleen Cullen stay on after her Christmas return; ditto not having Hope back. After Maureen died, she could have moved in with Ed, helped raise Michelle and acted as Bauer matriarch.

by Anonymousreply 88September 29, 2022 2:57 AM

R84, Judi is an amazing actress; her win was well-deserved. She won the Supporting Actress category. Her entire competition was all from ABC; Loanne Bishiop, GH; Christine Ebersole, OLTL; Eileen Herlie, AMC, Lois Kibbee, EDGE, and Marcy Walker AMC.

ABC appeared to have a lock on the noms in many years. GL had Emmy calibre actors for years (Zaslow, Charita, Bernau, Kasdorf), but couldn't seem to even get on the ballot.

I'm stunned Grant never won for playing Phillip; in 1987, Phillip began a scheme to overthrow Alan that climaxed with him drunk on the floor of the country club, having 'won,' saying 'try and disown me now, dad.' Brlliant.

He was solid through 1990 when Phillip went on the run on a trumped up murder charge.

Sometimes a lot of greats don't even submit themselves.

by Anonymousreply 89September 29, 2022 3:47 AM

There’s a grainy clip of Judi being announced as the winner. Who was announcing? Whoever it was they seemed thrilled she won by the way they announced her name.

Judi did deserve to win. I’m glad it was shocking. GL always had better actors and I’ll die on that hill.

It is shocking Grant didn’t win. He was always great.

by Anonymousreply 90September 29, 2022 3:52 AM

R90, GL had amazing actors; I would have given Emmys to Grant, Mary Kay Adams, Michelle Forbes, Beverlee McKinsey (DUH), and Maureen Garrett. Bernau, too.

by Anonymousreply 91September 29, 2022 3:56 AM

Judi was very talented, but I always wondered why she ended up on dreary low-rated AW for so many years, rather than go to higher rated series like the ABC soaps or the Bell soaps.

by Anonymousreply 92September 29, 2022 4:12 AM

Here’s the 1984 clip. The actress was something Schafer from Ryan’s Hope? I can’t here it well on my phone. She seemed thrilled Judi won.

Judi's win was announced by Louise Shaffer who at the time was playing Rae Woodard in Ryan's Hope. She went on to play Stephanie Wyatt on Search for Tomorrow after Marie Cheatham, who is best remembered for the Stephanie role, vacated it.

Louise also played Serena Faraday and her evil split personality Josie on Edge of Night in 1975-76.

She also played Erica Kane's evil stepmother Goldie Kane on AMC in 1987.

She was also a script writer on many of the NYC based soaps, including ATWT in the mid to late 90s.

[quote] [R81], a person in the soap press? I doubt a closeted actor would come out to the Guiding Light editor at Soap Opera Weekly.

I'm only repeating what I was told. (And it wasn't the GL editor at Soap Opera Weekly.)

by Anonymousreply 98September 29, 2022 12:05 PM

I loved Judi as Beth. But with every bit of due respect that she deserves, I can see why some actors at GL resented her.

The show had literally never, ever won an Emmy before (and the Daytime Emmys were about 10 years old at the time). The likes of Lisa Brown never got a notice (and, I suspect, didn't have network or P&G backing) and then Judi gets it before, say, Maeve or Jerry VD?

(Again, I'm not saying this as my opinion, but I can perhaps understand a bit of professional jealousy and why, as Judi has said, GL was not a happy place for her after her win.)

by Anonymousreply 99September 29, 2022 1:16 PM

Thanks R94.

I think there's a Louise interview with La Locher and your description makes me want to see it, now. I'll have to check.

by Anonymousreply 103September 29, 2022 2:33 PM

I’ve never forgiven Gail Kobe and Pam Long for destroying THE Guiding Light!!!

by Anonymousreply 104September 29, 2022 3:13 PM

Well to be fair, they replaced the Bauers with the equally obese Lewises...Billy, HB, Reva, Josh, little Bill. So there was really no net weight loss with the arrival of the Lewises.

by Anonymousreply 105September 29, 2022 3:22 PM

Are there pictures of it? Inquiring minds want to know.

by Anonymousreply 106September 29, 2022 3:41 PM

I've told this before, but I saw him rollerblading down West End Ave in NYC in the late 1980s. He stopped on a corner when I was waiting for the light to turn and I recognized him immediately. He was wearing spandex shorts that don't leave much to the imagination, and to be honest, there was not the slightest hint of VPL. Nothing to see, which disappointed me, because I had always found him extremely attractive otherwise.

by Anonymousreply 112September 29, 2022 5:30 PM

Brilliant of Pam and Gail to reinvent an iconic series like TGL to model the super-successful Texas!!! What were they thinking? TGL didn't need their "type" of help. They totally dumbed it down to the point where it became cartoonish.

List of attendees include His Pendulousness, as well as Terrell Anthony, Bryan Buffinton, Jean Carol, Beth Chamberlin, Crystal Chappell, Justin Deas, Mark Derwin, Frank Dicopoulos, Melissa Hayden, Rick Hearst, Maeve Kinkead, Ilene Kristen, Jessica Leccia, Wendy Moniz, Robert Newman, Michael O'Leary, Denise Pence (singing her favorite song, "I Was The Star of Guiding Light!"), Ron Raines, Peter Simon, Slee herself (!), Tina Sloan, Krista Tesreau, Gina Tognoni, Laura Wright and Kim Zimmer.

by Anonymousreply 128September 30, 2022 9:03 PM

That is quite a list!

by Anonymousreply 129September 30, 2022 9:17 PM

If you're in or near Los Angeles this weekend, here's another list of actors attending Horror Con LA

Including the gayest of the Jamie Frames, Mr. Russell Todd!

You can also walk by Michael Swan and tell him to shut up and take off his shirt.

Why aren't Kathleen Cullen, Elvera Roussel, Marsha Clark, or Mart Hulswit on that list? Everyone on that list was from after the "The" was dropped, and I have no use for them. No use for them AT ALL.

by Anonymousreply 131September 30, 2022 9:46 PM

Is Denise Pence still going to be bitter about Gail Kobe firing her?

by Anonymousreply 132September 30, 2022 10:57 PM

Chris Hughes had a big cock.

by Anonymousreply 133September 30, 2022 11:08 PM

So did young Chris!

I know. I was the town bicycle and yet Chris still found areas where his cock actually touched my stretched out sugar walls!

by Anonymousreply 134October 1, 2022 12:12 AM

r134, you're a common tramp, and I've told you to your face.

by Anonymousreply 135October 1, 2022 12:55 AM

Denise Pence is lucky she lasted as long as she did. She didn't have one memorable storyline the entire time she was there. She blended with the wallpaper and it's almost as if they forgot to fire her. Was she even in any of the post-disco openings?

by Anonymousreply 136October 1, 2022 12:57 AM

Denice Pence stopped her youtube confessions because no one cared. She thought she was the greatest GL ever had. What has she done since being fired from GL?

by Anonymousreply 137October 1, 2022 1:49 AM

I think Denise is still good friends with Elvera Roussel and Kathleen Cullen.

by Anonymousreply 138October 1, 2022 1:52 AM

Helen Wagner couldn’t stand Colleen, Maura, Lesli, or Kelley. She thought they sucked everything out of the show.

by Anonymousreply 139October 1, 2022 4:46 AM

R98, no, I didn't think it was the GL SPW editor, but what member of the soap press would know about Carl or Grant or anyone being gay?'

The last person a closeted soap guy would come out to would be someone in the soap press.

How great for Doug winning writing and GL show in 1982 -- 1981 was the year GH pulled out all the stops with the Ice Princess story and L&L's wedding.

by Anonymousreply 140October 1, 2022 6:42 AM

Kathleen Cullen made my nether regions moist.

by Anonymousreply 141October 1, 2022 6:55 AM

Are you insinuating the late Geraldine Court was a lesbian? She and David O'Brian from The Doctors were an item at one point, so I highly doubt she was a carpet muncher.

by Anonymousreply 142October 1, 2022 12:13 PM

So, after considering all the comments, he's the EJ of the eldergay generation.

by Anonymousreply 143October 1, 2022 12:42 PM

Pam Long and Gail Kobe saved this FAT and HOMELY soap.

by Anonymousreply 144October 1, 2022 1:49 PM

Judi Evans was plain and Beth kinda ate the show. Not as much as future characters ate GL and other shows, but it was sort of the beginning. I remember you had to wait through cycles for favourite characters to surface. Soaps were pretty democratic in their storytelling - every character got a balanced amount of air time.

by Anonymousreply 145October 1, 2022 1:56 PM

Kobe and Long revamped the show into THE Texas Light.

by Anonymousreply 146October 1, 2022 2:25 PM

So Kobe and Long were the proto Jill Farren Phelps?

by Anonymousreply 147October 1, 2022 2:27 PM

Killing off the dykey Hillary Bauer was the beginning of the end of TGL. The show never recovered. Thanks Gail and Pam.

by Anonymousreply 148October 1, 2022 2:32 PM

P&G wanted to move Lois Kibbee to TGL after TEON was canceled, but OLTL SNATCHed her up first. She was to be nuMeta to take over the Bauer matriarch role after Bert died.

by Anonymousreply 149October 1, 2022 3:54 PM

Are there pictures of it? Inquiring minds want to know

No, because it's another DL elderqueen fantasy

by Anonymousreply 150October 1, 2022 4:13 PM

Mizz Lois Kibbee was the biggest lez that ever lezzed. She’d have gotten along fabulously with Marsha Clark.

by Anonymousreply 151October 1, 2022 4:44 PM

[quote]So Kobe and Long were the proto Jill Farren Phelps?

In 1981, Gloria Monty played Luke and Laura four days a week. and on the fifth day, supporting characters tended to talk about how worried they were about Luke and Laura.

About 75-80% of the storytelling was devoted to Luke and Laura in some way.

Some of the other residents of Port Charles showed up about once every two weeks. Others once a month.

JFP was at GH as music director (or some such title) while all this was happening.

by Anonymousreply 152October 1, 2022 6:31 PM

Monty restricted John Beradino, Rachel Ames, and Emily McLaughlin, who had basically been the backbone of the show, to 20 appearances a year, max.

by Anonymousreply 153October 1, 2022 6:35 PM

Monty was a cunt. Miss Doug Marland had her face etched into his toilet bowl so he could shit on her. True story.

by Anonymousreply 154October 1, 2022 6:43 PM

Monty and ABC were just following the money. L&L were huge phenomenon. Young people were tuning in to watch them, not to watch Jessie and Audrey chatting at the nurse's station.

by Anonymousreply 155October 1, 2022 6:53 PM

That GL closing clip at R116 brings back fond memories of the soaps in the 1980s. I was in high school at that time. Things were so much simpler back then. I always loved hearing, "And now, the award-winning...Guiding Light." I was a General Hospital fan, but I got so tired of Luke and Laura and all those silly "on the run" storylines, so I switched to watching Guiding Light.

by Anonymousreply 156October 1, 2022 7:28 PM

Only old grannies and gay men in search of surrogate WASP families to replace the ones that rejected them for being "different" watched the P&G soaps. DOOL and the ABC soaps had energy and vitality and attracted youthful, emotionally stable viewers.

by Anonymousreply 157October 1, 2022 7:33 PM

This has been THE Guiding Light.

by Anonymousreply 158October 1, 2022 7:58 PM

I stopped watching TGL when Papa Bauer died. The light went out for the me the day Theo Goetz passed. It coincided with my 40th birthday just a few weeks earlier. Nothing was ever the same again.

by Anonymousreply 159October 1, 2022 8:26 PM

I've heard about the pendulousnes for years, but I've never seen evidence of it.

by Anonymousreply 160October 1, 2022 8:45 PM

R157 Except that wasn’t true, at least for GL. And your post is revealing about you.

by Anonymousreply 161October 1, 2022 9:51 PM

R132, yes.

by Anonymousreply 162October 1, 2022 9:57 PM

GL and ATWT were old lady soaps.

by Anonymousreply 163October 1, 2022 10:00 PM

It ruined my life when they removed THE from THE GUIDING LIGHT.

by Anonymousreply 164October 1, 2022 10:07 PM

Vinegary Helen Wagner wouldn’t let them take THE from As THE World Turns.

by Anonymousreply 165October 1, 2022 10:08 PM

Helen did not approve at all of Colleen's carousing around. Such a little hussy, that Colleen.

by Anonymousreply 166October 1, 2022 10:11 PM

but did the poster see a GAY penis or a straight one?

by Anonymousreply 167October 1, 2022 11:08 PM

Kookoo at SON is OBSESSED with Anne Heche. It’s all she thinks about at the nuthouse where she lives. Has anyone made the THE ANOTHER WORLD park bench into fire wood yet?

Kookoo is a F’ANNE!!

by Anonymousreply 168October 2, 2022 12:48 AM

KooKoo is for sure a crazy fucken nutjob. Many people left SON because of her looniness. She’s in her own fucken world. Absolutely clueless. Dumb as dirt.

by Anonymousreply 169October 2, 2022 1:04 AM

When AMC briefly brought back an adult Jamal, I’d hoped Grant would return as his birth father, Alec. I *think* he wasn’t on GL at the time, but I could have been wrong. It seemed like GA liked being on AMC, and his character had a lot of potential to be a long term villain. Instead, AMC fans got his GL “rival” Vincent Irizarry as the bad guy for many years.

by Anonymousreply 170October 2, 2022 12:59 PM

Gail Kobe and Pam Long were nowhere near the hacks that JFP is or was.

And a lot of what is attributed to Pam and Gail was actually more CBS. CBS wanted circa 1981-82 to just fire everyone who wasn't under 40 and replace them with new, young characters. They wanted to be GH, Part 2. Marland fought them and won an Emmy; Gail and Pam had to clear some of the cobwebs, like Mike Bauer, but tried to keep focus on the Spauldings and Bauers with Rick and Philip. The Four Musketeers was a great storyline - hell, they were all still around 30 years later when the show ended!

by Anonymousreply 171October 2, 2022 6:16 PM

Was Lacey Bauer on when Grant was no longer on the show. She was apparently a gymnast hoping to get to the Olympics. I imagine she would have happily done a dismount straight on Philip’s pendulous dong.

by Anonymousreply 172October 2, 2022 9:25 PM

John Bolger is hung longer and thicker. The girth is quite remarkable.

by Anonymousreply 173October 2, 2022 9:32 PM

Ugh no shhhh

by Anonymousreply 174October 2, 2022 10:33 PM

Vee, who is in the biz, is bullying Dumb Dylan, who has the scoop, again at SON! Why won’t Vee who is in the biz work on getting spamming KooKoo banned? KooKoo is posting lists of her Youtube searches for F’Anne content!

Did one of the fat soap twitter queens sit on the THE ANOTHER WORLD bench in Central Park and break it?!? KooKoo needs answers!!!

by Anonymousreply 175October 2, 2022 10:48 PM

I think Don Stewart left as Mike over contract dispute; Peter Simon quit; Charita died.

but Pam and Gail could have worked harder to make a stronger Bauer presence; they did create Michelle Bauer.

by Anonymousreply 176October 2, 2022 10:48 PM

[quote]Gail Kobe and Pam Long were nowhere near the hacks that JFP is or was.

We see how it works. You liked Gail and Pam so they aren't hacks and all of their mistakes were CBS' fault. But you don't like JFP, so all her mistakes were her mistakes and her mistakes alone.

Do you really think CBS just micromanaged Gail and Pam, but didn't micromanage JFP? The PG shows, regardless of who was writing them, were heavily micromanaged.

by Anonymousreply 177October 2, 2022 11:00 PM

r173

really? There was no discernable bulge in his Sex and t he City ep

by Anonymousreply 178October 2, 2022 11:58 PM

R177 How vivid, darling.

I think Pam made some mistakes. She had NO idea how to handle Quint and Nola, for one. And for all the fanfare about Alexandra's arrival, they really struggled to give her anything to do for years after Lujack's death.

My point about Kobe/Long is that they are regularly blamed for everything but the very fall of the lighthouse itself. But a lot of what was happening at the time, especially the sweeping away of the old guard, was a network push. I just don't think it's fair for them to get blamed for things beyond their control, that's all.

JFP really didn't push back against what CBS pushed for in the same way Pam and/or Gail (or Bob Calhoun) did. The fact that Maureen Bauer was FUCKING KILLED OFF is a pretty strong piece of evidence that speaks for itself.

All writers and producers have their bag of tricks. Literally every professional has (we filled up a thread years ago with the things Marland has repeated, including the weird daddy/stepdaddy incest business). You're right, I didn't care for Jill's. I didn't care for her self-described "bomb under the bassinet" storytelling. I didn't care for the way she made every show she worked on look like some sort of film noir. I didn't care for the stories where female characters were murdered - and while she may not be responsible for Frankie Frame, she was at the forefront of what I see as the characters regularly killed for ratings boosts trend.

by Anonymousreply 179October 3, 2022 1:33 AM

Vee, who’s in the biz, ordered Jill to kill Maureen Bauer. Now he’s reduced to bullying Dumb Dylan and reporting KooKoo nutcase to Errol. But Errol sits on his fat ass and won’t ban KooKoo. Vee is getting upset. Vee is in the biz, you know.

by Anonymousreply 180October 3, 2022 1:58 AM

If they had just recast Ed and Maureen with Dennis Cole and Shannon Tweed, they would've lasted until the show's end, and in fact, the show would probably still be on the air.

by Anonymousreply 181October 3, 2022 2:06 AM

Vee is in the biz, you know.

by Anonymousreply 182October 3, 2022 2:09 AM

R179, I like Pam Long and I like Gail Kobe, even when she shows up on old Perry Mason reruns. My point is simple, JFP is not the big bad villain people want to make her out to be. She got hired and continued to get hired because she got results. I hated what she did to Another World, but she managed to do what other couldn't on that show. She was also good at GL. And I be if she wanted to she could walk into another soap gig right now. The Maureen Bauer thing has become a joke. That one character's death, like it or not, created memorable story. So memorable that it's still being discussed 50 years later.

by Anonymousreply 183October 3, 2022 2:12 AM

I started watching Guiding Light a little bit because everyone kept saying my dad looked like Mike Bauer. He kinda did!

by Anonymousreply 184October 3, 2022 2:14 AM

Was Don Stewart actually fired, or did he quit? The writers were going to pair Mike and Lillian. They also chem tested Don Stewart with McKinsey. Evidently, though, he wanted a younger leading lady. At the end of the day, it seems like Kobe/Long had no interest in the Bauers as a large family unit (e.g., brothers and cousins), so they eliminated Mike and Hope and concentrated on Ed's family line. That allowed them to expand the Spauldings and bring on the Lewises.

by Anonymousreply 185October 3, 2022 2:20 AM

I never knew Mike Bauer ever had all of THIS going on.

Oh for fuck’s sake. That was 40 years ago! Get the fuck over it!!!

[quote] The Maureen Bauer thing has become a joke. That one character's death, like it or not, created memorable story. So memorable that it's still being discussed 50 years later.

It's memorable as much as for how good the death was as for how terrible the follow up was and how it destroyed the center of the show. All memories are not good memories.

by Anonymousreply 189October 3, 2022 11:43 AM

Oh god, for fuck sake, get over the Maureen thing. JFP and her focus groups were correct. Maureen/Ellen Parker were coma-inducing, and there's no way they were going to maneuver her into a long-term front burner storyline. She was definitely expendable. More importantly, the death was needed to open up opportunities for Ed, who was more vital to the structure of the show than she was.

by Anonymousreply 190October 3, 2022 1:00 PM

R183 I still hate JFP, but I can respect your point, and I get where you're coming from, though I am afraid we'll have to agree to disagree as far as the destination.

by Anonymousreply 191October 3, 2022 1:14 PM

The Maureen Bauer death story was brilliant. Ellen Parker would not have her Emmy if it weren’t for that story. So many actors and the writers were nominated and/or won Emmys because of that great dramatic storyline. And remember - the focus group thought that Maureen was expendable - and she was. She was a bore. A snooze. If they had kept her on, she’d appear once or twice a year on holidays.

by Anonymousreply 192October 3, 2022 1:27 PM

This is my own personal issue, but I never got the Maureen Bauer thing. She was a character created in 1982, and the last remnants of a family that was really no longer a big deal. She married Ed which gave her Bauer status, but it wasn't like they killed Holly. I could understand people being this upset about Holly, a character who had long roots on the show. Did Maureen ever have an A story?

by Anonymousreply 193October 3, 2022 1:32 PM

Ellen Parker was a low-energy actress. A total yawn. Perhaps if someone more charismatic had been playing the role, like the great Jamie Lynn Bauer or Linda Gibboney, for example, things would've turned out differently.

by Anonymousreply 194October 3, 2022 1:33 PM

R193 - she was nice. Amid all the craziness, she was nice. And ever drama needs somebody who can rise above the drama and who represents something in the human experience we can all relate to. It's a pretty common archetype.

by Anonymousreply 195October 3, 2022 1:56 PM

[quote] Did Maureen ever have an A story?

No! But neither did Bert or Nancy. They are tentpole characters. They are the audience's ears and eyes and voice. Nancy calling out Kim for her hypocrisy on Bob's affair or Bert telling Josh that recovery takes times allows the audience to speak through them. They are the warm, soothing, nurturers. They are needed.

by Anonymousreply 196October 3, 2022 3:33 PM

No offense, but Bert had plenty of A stories. But I will agree with you about Nancy, she just stood around looking disapproving.

by Anonymousreply 197October 3, 2022 4:13 PM

There were so many trollops in Oakdale, Nancy spent most of her time giving those disapproving looks.

by Anonymousreply 198October 3, 2022 4:15 PM

Helen Wagner brought her real life vinegary-ness to Nancy. She wasn’t acting.

by Anonymousreply 199October 3, 2022 4:18 PM

[quote]There were so many trollops in Oakdale

Lisa and Joyce gave poor Nancy the fits. At least she liked Carol.

by Anonymousreply 200October 3, 2022 4:20 PM

I think the closest Maureen ever got to an A story was when boring Parker wasn’t playing the role. Ed & Claire slept together which produced Michelle and Mo finding out about it wasn’t an A story but somewhat close to it for about 2 weeks.

by Anonymousreply 201October 3, 2022 4:21 PM

Ed never had an A story after the Dobsons left. Subsequent regimes sidelined him and wrote out most of the family. The show basically revolved around the Spauldings and Lewises throughout the 80s (with the Reardons also prominent the first half of the decade), and then also the Coopers starting in the '90s.

by Anonymousreply 202October 3, 2022 4:26 PM

Nancy used to dart disapproving looks at that brazen little hussy Barbara.

by Anonymousreply 203October 3, 2022 4:27 PM

Ed was a drunk, a wife beater, and a cuckold at various times. They really played the hell out of Ed. As a Bauer, that was really all he needed to be on the show in the later years.

by Anonymousreply 204October 3, 2022 4:30 PM

Margo, Barbara, Emily, Emma Snyder, Lyla, Susan,Kim, Katie—tramps and harlots, the lot of them.

None of these “ladies” had morals or breeding.

by Anonymousreply 205October 3, 2022 4:31 PM

Helen disapproved of Colleens affairs and dui’s.

by Anonymousreply 206October 3, 2022 4:40 PM

The story with Ed, as played by Richard Van Vleet, and Charlotte Wheaton was a front burner A story for a while. I think they really wanted RVV to work as Ed, in order to keep the Bauers active, and bring over some of the AMC audience. He wasn't bad, and definitely brought some much-needed energy to the role that the humdrum PS could never muster, but he just had no chemistry with anyone.

by Anonymousreply 207October 3, 2022 4:43 PM

[quote] No offense, but Bert had plenty of A stories.

Sure. Back when Papa Bauer took the role of tentpole character.

by Anonymousreply 208October 3, 2022 4:59 PM

It doesn't matter when she had them, but she had them.

by Anonymousreply 209October 3, 2022 5:03 PM

Yeah, I got that. A thousand apologies. My point was that the shows always needed a tentpole character and that killing off Maureen without a replacement was the problem. I should never have implied that Bert never ever had a A story. I'm a very bad person.

by Anonymousreply 210October 3, 2022 5:05 PM

Pam Long had no interest in writing for the Bauers. She and Kobe would've eliminated them altogether, but P&G/CBS wanted bare minimum Bauer representation. They were a boring family.

by Anonymousreply 211October 3, 2022 5:06 PM

No you're not a bad person R210. You like, I'm assuming, the rest of us... by the time we were old enough to start watching these shows Bert was the matriarch/talk to. We aren't old enough to remember original recipe Bert from the 50s sand 60s. It's kind of like Ellen on ATWT, no one remembers when she was a teen mom and breaking up marriages. Everyone just remembers that damned bun.

by Anonymousreply 212October 3, 2022 5:18 PM

From a suits POV, why did the Hughes family seem more important to ATWT than the Bauers to GL? I'd argue that the Bauers were more inherently important to GL than the Hugheses were to ATWT. And why did they totally dismantle Matthews family on AW, who were the equivalent of the Bauers and Hugheses?

by Anonymousreply 213October 3, 2022 5:27 PM

The Matthews were dismantled because Virginia Dwyer didn't want Mary Matthews to be turned into an Aunt Liza type character. She complained and got fired. It was probably a mistake to fire her.

by Anonymousreply 214October 3, 2022 5:32 PM

In his book, Harding Lemay went into great detail about firing Virginia Dwyer.

He said she ad libbed greatly and rarely followed the script, leaving her fellow actors at a loss for how to respond.

She had her own vision for the character and was determined to push that vision as fabulous mother and grandmother through, regardless of how that matched up with the HW's Bible.

by Anonymousreply 215October 3, 2022 5:39 PM

The Hughes family was saved when Tom and Margo took off as one of the show’s super couples, which probably led to Frannie being SORASed.

At this time, the Stewart family were going into a decline. By 1984, Dee and Annie were written out and Henderson Forsythe asked to be dripped from contract.

by Anonymousreply 216October 3, 2022 5:44 PM

Well, the Stewarts were still major due to the phenomenal popularity of Steve and Betsy. Once Meg left, they were really sidelined in favor of the Snyders, but to Marland's credit, Emily was usually front burner, he kept Betsy (Frost) and Susan active, and kept Ellen on the canvass. ATWT was really more respectful of its original and early families than GL was, and certainly much more than AW. AW really lost its identity once the Matthews family was written out.

by Anonymousreply 217October 3, 2022 5:52 PM

[quote]The Hughes family was saved when Tom and Margo took off as one of the show’s super couples, which probably led to Frannie being SORASed.

Great point.

The same thing would have probably happened with the Bauers if Rick would have taken off, but he was kind of always overshadowed by Phillip.

by Anonymousreply 218October 3, 2022 5:53 PM

The same thing happened with the Martins on AMC, the moral backbone of the show. They were severely sidelined in favor of the Cortlandts and Chandlers in the 1980s, and were probably only saved because Michael E. Knight became such a huge daytime superstar.

by Anonymousreply 219October 3, 2022 5:56 PM

I always liked Maureen, both of them, but yes, it wasn't so much THAT particular character.

It was the beginning of getting rid of all those characters that made a show like GL and ATWT three dimensional.

And I think most of us could understand budget cuts and a need to focus on 22 or so characters instead of 40 (sorry, Mr. Marland). But we're cutting characters we like/love/love to hate for....Jeffrey fucking O'Neill? Really?

by Anonymousreply 220October 3, 2022 9:44 PM

Many years ago, a GL insider here explained that a few fans of Bradley Cole in New Jersey called the show regularly demanding more screen time for him. Called every week, without fail.

TPTB were scared this might just be the tip of the iceberg, that there were a lot more Bradley fans out there. They worried what these fans might do, how it might affect the ratings, if they cut down on Cole's screen time.

As a result, we got Jeffrey O'Neil front and center for six years until the show was cancelled.

by Anonymousreply 221October 3, 2022 9:57 PM

R221 They did the same for Danny and Michelle, and by the time everyone finally got wise and realized no one really wanted to see them, the damage had already been done.

by Anonymousreply 222October 3, 2022 9:59 PM

Bradley Cole was up for the Nick Marone role on B&B in spring 2003, the role that ultimately went to Jack Wagner.

Cole had quit GL a year earlier and Rick Bauer received Prince Richard Winslow's heart, When EP John Conboy got wind of Cole possibly going to B&B, he panicked and quickly signed Cole to another contract at GL.

However, Prince Richard was dead and didn't have a heart, so no way to bring that character back to life. As a result, we got the hastily created Jeffrey O'Neil character with every female in Springfield except Aunt Meta throwing themselves at him.

by Anonymousreply 223October 3, 2022 10:07 PM

[quote]They did the same for Danny and Michelle, and by the time everyone finally got wise and realized no one really wanted to see them, the damage had already been done.

Danny and Michelle, as played by Paul Anthony Stewart and Joie Lenz had fantastic chemistry. It has been a long time since I'd seen a soup couple have that kind of electricity. And I'm saying that as a jaded soap view who yawned at many of the "super couples" of the 1980s.

Despite that chemistry, GL didn't give Danny and Michelle a storyline that was all that exciting. Tying Danny to a mob family was an albatross around the show's neck. Without compelling storyline to match their chemistry, the couple began fizzling out after about a year.

By the time Joie left, Danny and Michelle were just sort of a couple that had once been sizzling who were now lukewarm.

by Anonymousreply 224October 3, 2022 11:20 PM

The focus groups LOVED Bradley Cole, so TPTB went out of their way to keep him.

by Anonymousreply 225October 4, 2022 1:01 AM

[quote]The focus groups LOVED Bradley Cole, so TPTB went out of their way to keep him.

The focus groups are idiots. That fucking island bullshit storyline was the worst piece of crap ever foisted upon the television airwaves. I can't believe anyone thought that was a good idea. Mid/late 90s Guiding Light was so terrible. It's amazing it lasted as long as it did.

I will say, I enjoyed the Millie Taggert GL. It was last time GL resembled its old self.

Speaking of Millee Taggart, all these years, from her acting on SFT to her writing gigs, I thought her name was pronounced "Milly" I learned from the Locher Room, first from his interview with Courtney Simon and her daughter Kate Hall, and then with Taggart herself, that it's pronounced "Millay".

In her terms of her talent, she is not the greatest HW. Her pairing with Tom King on RH and then Loving didn't produce anything memorable IMO. Her short stint on GL is well-remembered only because she was better than the disaster that had preceded her.

by Anonymousreply 227October 4, 2022 2:30 AM

TPTB really lost the plot in the late 90s on. Fine, listen to fans. That’s a no-brainer. They should also know what makes a good show. I wanted Phillip and Beth together. However, as long as the story for both were good they could be a part for a time. Or, just give me a great show with great writing. It really is that easy. We don’t need 4 out of 5 days of Reva, Beth, Luke, Laura or else that story better be damn good.

by Anonymousreply 228October 4, 2022 2:49 AM

I always loved the P&G Christmas episodes. I found this gem from SFT. Scattered among the crowd are Peter and Courtney Simon, Joel Higgins. John James, Michael Nouri, and Millee Taggart, among others. Beautiful song written and sung by Mary Stuart. This feel as though they're stepping out of character, and everyone seems to love Mary as she makes her way from person to person, contrary to stuff I've heard about her.

Say what you want about Ellen Parker but she was a real workhorse and gave her all. Compare her to McKinsey, who was so lazy and didn't want to work, despite having 22 weeks of vacation per year.

by Anonymousreply 234October 4, 2022 4:40 AM

But but but Jill Farren Phelps killed GL when Boreen Bauer died. Did any of you watch John Conboy and Ellen Wheeler’s version of GL????

by Anonymousreply 235October 4, 2022 6:30 AM

I will always maintain that Joan Collins’ best work was on GL because on everything else, which was on film, she always overthought how to act scenes. On GL the accelerated nature of the production schedule made her much more natural and instinctive.

Joan Collins was surprisingly effective as Alexandra.

by Anonymousreply 238October 4, 2022 5:30 PM

Joan was better as Alexandra than Marj's second go round playing her. As we've discussed multiple times before, when Marj came back from AMC, she overplayed the role to the point Alexandra was almost a caricature.

by Anonymousreply 239October 4, 2022 5:42 PM

when GL updated its opening in 1991, there were moving shots of the characters inside the traveling circles.

Ed an Maureen (Parker) were featured in a photograph together; a picture that was still. They were supposed to be solid. A couple you could rely on.

I mostly believe they shouldn't have killed off Maureen not because the story wasn't good; it was so dramatic.

But the show had recently lost Kimberly Simms, Beverlee McKinsey and Sherry Stringfield; really? Let's FIRE someone else who's popular.

That said, they blew it by not having Claire and Hope come back immediately and help Ed raise Michelle; it would have led to a Holly/Ed/Claire/Fletcher quadrangle; Hope would have been a maternal figure in the Bauer home. Alan Michael's mother; Alan's moral compass.

Instead, we got Tangie, Buzz, Bunny, Pamela Capwell and a whole bunch of other SB actors.

That hurt GL and the show never recovered.

by Anonymousreply 240October 4, 2022 9:46 PM

I don't think Marland had come back to ATWT yet in 1985 when Bob and Kim got married but whoever came up with that should get a medal.

They were the couple that was always meant to be together; the Hughes house/family had all these generations; Chris and Nancy (whom Doug did bring on); Bob and Kim, then Tom/Margo, then Frannie and Andy.

Sure, Doug brought on his own characters -- the Snyders -- but he also brought back Susan Stewart, Emily Stewart; he made sure beloved favorites had story.

When Jill pops onto a show, she doesn't usually dip into a show's history; she brings on pals from other shows -- the SB actors to GL: A and Jensen to GH; Steve to Y&R....someone quipped once that Jill only works with people she's already worked with.

by Anonymousreply 241October 4, 2022 9:54 PM

and I'm not opposed to producers and writers hiring their pals; Pam and Gail brought over McKinsey to GL.

But that worked.

Tangie was a disaster.

by Anonymousreply 242October 4, 2022 9:59 PM

Marcy would have worked as a recast Amanda IF Amanda was still a sheltered heiress, instead of a cheap Heidi Fleiss knock-off.

by Anonymousreply 243October 4, 2022 10:23 PM

Yes, Marcy could have made a good DeSORASED Amanda, if written properly.

However, in October 1993 when Marcy was cast as Tangi, Alan Michael was the only Spaulding in town on an ongoing basis.

Alexandra had just returned a few weeks before Tangi would arrive. So, not really the idea time to be beefing up the Spaulding clan.

Actually, now that I think of it, Nick was in town too. However, he never really admitted to his Spaulding heritage. He acknowledged that Alex was his mother, but pretty much ignored everything else Spaulding.

by Anonymousreply 244October 4, 2022 10:40 PM

Tangi has a potentially good back story in that she was involved with Josh and she was Roger's previously unheard of step-daughter.

But they didn't use that backstory properly. Likely because the show kept changing HWs in late 93-95. Each subsequent HW was trying to make his/her mark on the show and wasn't invested in the Tangi character enough to write her a decent story.

I think by the time Marcy bolted in 1995, the show had forgotten about the Tangi-Roger connection. I don't recall the two having a goodbye scene.

by Anonymousreply 245October 4, 2022 10:44 PM

R240, I always thought those “traveling circles” in the 1991 opening looked more like silver dollar coins. And the eyeline of the actors within them was unintentionally funny, especially Crystal Chappell’s. I don’t think she knew where to look.

by Anonymousreply 246October 4, 2022 10:45 PM

The "pendulous" one? I thought it was about Chrissy Metz. My bad.

by Anonymousreply 247October 4, 2022 10:52 PM

Ideally, Marcy would have gone back to AMC to reprise Liza -- which she later did anyway -- and GL could have reached out to Kathleen Cullen as they did in 1987.

Sad to say, for me, Keifer was never Blake. I would have preferred to have seen Cullen's Amanda come back and be paired with Ross.

Some actors just belong on shows that they're meant to be on. Marcy belonged on AMC as Liza. The sliver lining of Jill coming to Y&R in 2012 was she jettisoned Genie as Genenieve (sp?) Atkinson which opened the door for her to reprise GH's Laura.

of course, it's hard to tell who will work out in a new role and who won't. If Pam had left GL early and a new writer didn't connect with McKinsey, she have bolted back to AW in the mid 80s (and we'd never have been Carmen Duncan in the role).

Most cases, i wish actors would stay in their signature roles.

by Anonymousreply 248October 5, 2022 1:23 AM

GL was actually pretty exciting in 1995 with Brent/Marion (one of the darkest, most riveting (MARY) storylines in daytime history), Annie, and Reva’s return.

by Anonymousreply 249October 5, 2022 2:06 AM

R249, I agree whole heartedly. I hated Nadine and Cutter leaving but the show was compelling at that point.

Loved Annie and Reva's return -- especially the Spaulding jet reunion with Josh and the masquerade ball on New Year's Eve were classic.

I'm pretty sure Barbara Berjer returned as Holly's mother Barbara around that time. She was frail but geez GL was about family, no?

Reva went up to Fletcher and Holly at the big country club bash and asked Fletch for a dance 'in honor of Kyle and Maeve'

Kudos to Megan for knowing her GL history to include stuff like that. It's gold to longtime fans and new producers just don't understand or care, sadly.

Marland was on his way to ATWT when Bob and Kim were married, and I seem to remember reading that he knew about the wedding and was OK with it - I think they would have held it for his arrival if he'd wanted but he was already thinking ahead to the Doug Cummings story (as his bible for that time showed).

by Anonymousreply 275October 6, 2022 5:04 AM

I’m just in awe that GL maintained huge ratings against the, at the time, cultural phenomenon GH and did it for years. It never waned. It also did well with attracting younger viewers with the Kevin Bacon days to the Four Musketeers. GL was never truly seen as old like ATWT and AW (and to a much more degree some others) were.

by Anonymousreply 276October 6, 2022 10:50 AM

This very old article explains a major problem in producing a tv show in NYC, and why the Los Angeles soaps are still running despite dismal ratings.

It comes down to how many dollars need to be earned per square foot of production space. The writing was already on the wall when this article was published. But when the pros and cons were weighed out, they did not want to upset any apple carts by moving to a different state.

It just strikes me as odd that production of so much happens in literally the two densest, most expensive cities in our entire country. Especially post 1990 or so, when soap ratings really began to fall AND the various mergers at network levels started the extreme penny pinching and need to squeeze every penny of dividend from an investment.

Peter Simon was so lethargic. You'd think that for the only adult left from an iconic family, they'd have cast someone who didn't have the charisma of a door knob. Richard Van Vleet was a good start, but he was too identified with his AMC role and had zero chemistry with anyone on GL. Maybe someone like John McCook or Drake Hogestyn or even Terry Lester would've worked. Simon and that snooze Ellen Parker were the perfect cure for chronic insomnia. I've watched paint dry that was more exciting than them.

by Anonymousreply 308October 9, 2022 9:51 PM

Ellen Parker who? What has she done since JFP gifted her with Emmy material?

by Anonymousreply 310October 9, 2022 10:00 PM

R310 I kinda felt that was the likely result of the day.

I love most of the people involved and nearly any chance to see Maeve is a good one, but I think the well is dry for some of these folks to say anything new....at least while Miss Locher keeps them on a tight PR leash.

(Yes, she does a wonderful job, bless her heart for doing it, blah blah blah, meow meow meow. But still, the restricted topics impacts what people can say.)

by Anonymousreply 311October 10, 2022 3:39 AM

Why doesn't Locher bring on some people from Old School TGL (pre-Long/Kobe) like Millette Alexander, Lenore Kasdoff, Kathleen Cullen, Janet Grey, Cindy Pickett, Lynne Adams, etc.? I know he's had Mart Hulswit and Fran Myers on, but how about some others?

The only interesting tidbit was Alan Locher asking Maeve about Jerry Ver Dorn's prep and she said she couldn't speak to it, that he wasn't like some other actors who wouldn't shut up and would talk ad nauseam about their process. The others started cracking up so it seemed like some inside joke and they all knew who she was talking about. Any ideas?

by Anonymousreply 338October 13, 2022 4:01 PM

She really did. At least Slee realized what she was doing and said something like “Didn’t you think so, Maeve?”

The first person I thought about whose prep irritated the other actors might have been Chris Bernau but I don’t think it was. Maybe Robert Newman? He seemed to fancy himself a “serious actor” but was a total mediocrity.

by Anonymousreply 339October 13, 2022 4:40 PM

Zimmer carreid Newman.

He signed a multi year deal at Y&R but Ashland's suddenly being killed off and the investigation wrapping up in a week or so screams 'let's cut our losses.'

It's really a shame. We saw Burgi's Ashland having an episode clearly showing the character had an illness; but Newman's Ashland was lying about the cancer? WHY? It's writing 101.

by Anonymousreply 340October 13, 2022 4:44 PM

Here’s the 1983 crawl. It would have to be someone who was on the show the same time as Maeve, Kathleen Cullen and Denise Pence. I think it’s down to Newman, Tom O’Rourke and Gregory Beecroft. I can see it being Beecroft. He seemed like he could be a total pain in the ass and he didn’t get much work after GL so he must have had a reputation.

Robert Newman was definitely out of his comfort zone playing Ashland Locke. He didn't add anything to the character. Best to kill Ashland off and cut the losses.

Playing a shady character just doesn't seem to be in Newman's wheelhouse. When Josh Lewis first came on in 1981-82, they played him as a villain who was trying to break up Kelly and Morgan. While he broke them up, the character never really caught on.

Josh only started clicking as a character when they paired him with Reva in 1984.

Could have been Don Stewart. He was reportedly quite a diva.

Is Denice Pence STILL bitter? She didn’t work much after GL so she must not be as great as she thinks she is.

by Anonymousreply 345October 13, 2022 5:06 PM

I heard a story about GB going OFF on a reporter in the soap press. It's so odd...fans slam the soap press for not being tough enough on the genre yet talent can FREAK OUT over the most innocuous question.

I don't even them...imagine back in the day or even now asking an actor if they want to talk about their dating life -- and they're closeted.

People did a cover story with three soap hunks (?) actors in the early 1980s -- Chris Bernau and Michael Corbett and some guy from AMC, I think he was Tom Cudahey's brother? Anywho, we know two of those actors were gay but the article talks about them dating women.

Has anything really changed? Is there ONE masculine leading man actor on soaps who's out? Rikaart plays more character than leading man.

by Anonymousreply 346October 13, 2022 5:10 PM

even = envy

by Anonymousreply 347October 13, 2022 5:13 PM

I think it was Beecroft-Tony was a love interest for both Katie and Vanessa in the early 1980s. I’m sure Don Stewart was a diva but probably not in a Mr. Serious Actor sort of way, more in a vain, conceited and entitled sort of way.

by Anonymousreply 348October 13, 2022 5:19 PM

I've found it revealing that Greg Beecroft is one of the few actors who hasn't done a Locher Room session.

He has both GL and ATWT to talk about. Plus was briefly on GH.

I'm sure he's been invited to appear on the Locher Room multiple times.

by Anonymousreply 349October 13, 2022 5:29 PM

And Stewart! Why didn't he should up to pay tribute to Jerry!???

by Anonymousreply 350October 13, 2022 5:30 PM

Beecroft was fucking Kim Morgan Greene - who was on AW.

by Anonymousreply 351October 13, 2022 5:33 PM

It was People that had Chris Bernau, Michael Corbett and Allen Dysert on the cover.

[quote] I'm sure he's been invited to appear on the Locher Room multiple times.

GB was on both shows well before Locher's time.

I say this again in as neutral a way as I can, with appreciation for what Locher has done....but he does not go even one small millimeter out of his comfort zone to book that show. If he knows them personally, or knows a connection to them, they've been on that show.

Lisa Brown and JWS sat unasked for eons until the roar asking them to appear got too loud to ignore - sadly Lisa was sick by then.

Whether it's wanting to work only with those he has a relationship with, or only wanting actors who will "color within the lines" and keep things looking sunny and positive on the PR front - despite PGP not even existing any longer - La Locher keeps it sunnier and as dust free as Nancy Hughes' kitchen on the Locher Room.

by Anonymousreply 353October 13, 2022 6:45 PM

[quote] he wasn't like some other actors who wouldn't shut up and would talk ad nauseam about their process. The others started cracking up so it seemed like some inside joke and they all knew who she was talking about. Any ideas?

Despite her rep as a screen time hog I don't think this was Zimmer. I wonder if it was Jordan? I doubt it, though.

Thinking it may have been Bernau or perhaps Ron Raines. Don Stewart is a good guess. Peter Simon seems too down to earth.

by Anonymousreply 354October 13, 2022 6:47 PM

While Locher has clearly favored having people he knows on the show, he has gone out of his way to get some GL folks from before his time there -- Denise Pence, Harley Kozak, Michael Woods, Elvira Rousell, Michael Tylo,

And he has no personal connection to any AW people, yet has managed to have several AW themed shows.

Ditto Edge of Night. He's had three Edge shows now. And there aren't that many Edge stars around left to book!

by Anonymousreply 355October 13, 2022 7:31 PM

R355 I guarantee you he either knew those people or knew someone that knew them. He simply will not contact anyone he does not have an existing personal relationship with.

He also is tepidly interested, at best, on things he didn't work on himself (hence his treatment of AW stars). Lady Eyes A Buggin would shred him in seconds.

by Anonymousreply 360October 13, 2022 10:51 PM

That KooKoodora is still stinking up the SON boards with her stupidity and dumbness.

by Anonymousreply 361October 14, 2022 1:20 AM

I've head that Peter Simon was no walk in the park, basically the GL equivalent of Bryggman when it came to his opinion of the scripts.

by Anonymousreply 362October 14, 2022 1:48 AM

I’m sorry but the idea of Helen Wagner confronting Colleen Zenk and calling her a tramp to her face cracks me up.

by Anonymousreply 363October 14, 2022 2:10 AM

Robert Newman was a HUGE asshole back in the day AND a bad actor, an unappealing combo that made him insufferable both on and off set. He was online back when the infamous MediaDomain boards existed and took a lot of flack directly from fans, some of which he’d personally respond to, always ending the message with a ‘God Bless.’ His ‘successful’ soap run was thanks to his leading ladies whom he coasted off of for years, and all this prolific theatre work he talks about these days is off-off-off-off-off Broadway stuff in Bugtussle, Kentucky.

He’s also patronizing beyond belief. He sighs audibly in interviews and hems and haws and starts off answering with, ‘you know, I’ve answered this question a million times…’ Like he’s bothered to be there. He could politely decline if he feels it’s all been said and done (it has), but he doesn’t. Why show up and be condescending? But that’s him in a nutshell.

by Anonymousreply 364October 14, 2022 2:11 AM

I wasn’t a Peter Simon fan. Ever seen the Debbie Downer skits on SNL? That’s him. He’s impossible. As an actor unless it appealed to HIM he half-assed it, which basically describes his entire run as Ed Bauer. On one Locher Room he admitted he came prejudiced into the part because of how it all transpired. He was given notice that he was getting another role after his part on whatever show ended but not told which one, so he started thinking maybe Alan or somebody more exciting, only to find out it was Ed Bauer. He left during McTavish’s run since aside from the Eve story post Maureen’s death he’d been operating as background filler.

by Anonymousreply 365October 14, 2022 2:14 AM

R364 = Kimmy Zimmy

by Anonymousreply 366October 14, 2022 2:14 AM

Back when I lived in California, a bunch of fans from AOL got together to go to the Soap Opera Digest Awards together. Danny Markel was friendly with us and arranged to meet us at the hotel everyone stayed at. Unintentionally, we ran into dozens of other soap actors coming through the lobby and to a person they were all wonderful from Judy Evans to Danvid Canary to even Marcia McCabe (who I had to say "Hi" to in the gift shop because I was a big SFT fan and she was gracious as could be even though Sunny was 15 years ago at that point). Anyway, one actor completely avoided us, but stood at the ledge of the second floor balcony to make sure he was seen. He was just so above it all (literally!). It was Robert Newman.

by Anonymousreply 367October 14, 2022 2:20 AM

I can't imagine why P&G chose Simon for the the role, other than he was a known entity from his popular run on SFT and his failed run on ATWT. As the sole remaining Bauer in that age range, they really needed someone more charismatic and dynamic who could've competed with Alan, Roger, Billy, Ross, Fletcher, etc., and not fade into the woodwork. You don't for a second believe that Rita or Holly would've been attracted to his mopey interpretation of Ed.

by Anonymousreply 368October 14, 2022 2:22 AM

I remember Peter Simon from Search when I was a little kid. He always seemed to be a low energy actor. I'm assuming someone at PG or CBS thought they needed a Bauer patriarch on the show, but they didn't seem invested in the character. The Ed I remember was Mart Hulswit.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 369October 14, 2022 2:25 AM

Robert Newman has a very high Q score.

by Anonymousreply 370October 14, 2022 2:26 AM

Mart was so handsome, even if he did get a little pudgy. Peter Simon said in his Locher Room interview that Mart was fired because they wanted to de-SORAS Ed. I had always heard that Marland hated Hulswit, claiming he came off as a fuddy duddy, and he and Potter decided to axe him in favor of Simon.

by Anonymousreply 371October 14, 2022 2:28 AM

Peter Simon had been Ian on ATWT before he played Ed. Ian was the ex-husband of Bob's then love interest Dana and eventually started an affair with Dee Stewart, though sex could and did eventually kill him due to a weak heart. It was not a very good story, but spun Dee into John's orbit which was a great story.

by Anonymousreply 372October 14, 2022 2:31 AM

R354, the one who talked ad nauseum about prep was definitely a man so that rules out Zimmer. And Ron Raines has to be ruled out for the fact he was on way later than Denise Pence and Kathleen Cullen. And Raines is apparently very well regarded by his colleagues.

R364 makes a pretty compelling case that it’s Robert Newman, who cut his theatrical teeth in Podunk, Wisconsin or wherever that teensy little theater he’s worked at is.

by Anonymousreply 373October 14, 2022 2:47 AM

I have a hard time believing Zimmer would have put up with that nonsense from Newman.

by Anonymousreply 374October 14, 2022 11:52 AM

Newman's a really fine actor. Doesn't he have an Emmy nod or two?

by Anonymousreply 375October 14, 2022 12:10 PM

R367, the best performances most of these actors ever gave was to not be alarmed and afraid of the weirdo fans who treat them like they know them intimately.

by Anonymousreply 376October 14, 2022 1:53 PM

Peter Simon was so mopey as Ed. How many times did he leave & come back? At least Ed had some life during the Beirut storyline with Richard Van Vleet which created Michelle. Simon would have played it so mopey.

by Anonymousreply 377October 14, 2022 3:34 PM

I liked Simon as Ed, but I only ever knew him and that buffoon that had been on AMC. (I also briefly saw Robert Gentry as Ed but he didn't make an impression, good or bad.)

I liked him well enough, and thought he did great work during Maureen's death. I know he left circa 2003 because they asked him to slap Michelle and he wouldn't do it.

I've seen tape of Mart Hulswit and he seems like GL's version of Jacquie Courtney - suited for an old style soap performance but not for something more nuanced.

by Anonymousreply 378October 14, 2022 3:41 PM

RVV, who's a very capable actor, gets a bad rap as Ed. I agree that he injected some much-needed energy into the role. The issues were that he was so identified with his signature AMC role as Chuck Tyler, and more importantly, he had NO chemistry with anyone on GL. I'm sure that Kobe was hoping AMC fans would follow him to GL, but that strategy almost never happens.

by Anonymousreply 379October 14, 2022 3:42 PM

....

by Anonymousreply 380October 14, 2022 3:48 PM

Plus he was too fat, R380.

I heard that Newman was so over the top chewing the scenery when Josh was temporarily paralyzed that Charita pointed to her remaining leg and said “Care to chew on this one now, dear?”

by Anonymousreply 381October 14, 2022 5:24 PM

If not for Kim Zimmer, the character of Josh Lewis would be a lot like the character of Trish Lewis -- someone who was on the show for a few years but we rarely mention since he didn't do anything memorable.

by Anonymousreply 382October 14, 2022 5:41 PM

Without Zimmer Josh would have been written off back to Tulsa and Marland would have put him on either Loving or As The World Turns or both.

by Anonymousreply 383October 14, 2022 5:47 PM

Wasn't Robert Gentry the first adult Ed?

I always thought Robert Newman was one of those well liked every man guys. This is interesting information. I always roll my eyes at soap actors who talk about things like "process". In soaps, you just don't have the time for all of that, you save that for the stage and film.

by Anonymousreply 384October 14, 2022 5:49 PM

R364 and R365 speak the truth; are you the same poster?

Newman sighs and complains. Zimmer carried him. Even he joked i the VHS tape Reva The Scarlet Years 'was I in that scene?' Haha but something serious was beneath as there is in a lot of jokes.

I saw Simon at at the Emmys one year after GL ended; told him as a Gl viewer I was happy Ed and Holly ended up on a cruise together (Fletcher and Alex took the cruise -- not sure Ed and Holly did but they took a trip around the world; I assumed it was a cruise).

Peter says to me, "It's not good when you look at what's going on with cruises." (They were in the news at the time -- fires, accidents etc.)

I said "well....it's not so much the cruise part...but that they ended up together."

Crickets.

A person in ear shot said to me 'give it up.'

I said, 'No. I'm going to get a moment here .... for Bert."

Then, he grinned.

Actors! Wanna hear one complain? Give him a job!

by Anonymousreply 385October 14, 2022 7:14 PM

Newman seemed to do well with the damsel in distress. It's why he and Vanessa were like oil and water, but any woman who was either a damsel in distress (Reva, Annie, Olivia) or a woman of mystery (Sonni) was catnip to him.

Harley was actually an outlier and in some ways that whole thing was the best acting he ever did on the show. He played the damsel in distress for once.

But yeah, there's a reason he never got an Emmy....

by Anonymousreply 386October 14, 2022 8:18 PM

R367 I remember the soap community that was on AOL in the late 90s. It was fun in the early days before the loons came along.

There was a fun GL only board I used to visit, too.

by Anonymousreply 387October 14, 2022 8:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 390October 15, 2022 1:41 AM

Could you imagine anyone being BFF's with the Pendulous One?

MOL must have felt so insecure around the Lion God known as Phillip Granville Spaulding. He STILL looks good shirtless now, I'd imagine.

by Anonymousreply 393October 15, 2022 3:02 AM

When India blackmailed Phillip into marriage, Grant and Mary Kay Adams did amazing work.

they're in his bedroom and he pretends to come on to her, giving her everything she wants -- and then when she's ready to be fucked, he just walks away and starts curling weights;

she taunts him, saying Phillip and Beth had never made love; then, she went out and found a real man -- Lujack. and the way MKA punched 'jack' in Lujack's name sent Phillip over the edge.

He's got her by the neck and he says don't you say her name and in an act of (foolish) defiance with her last gasp of air India says, "Beth!" Phillip realized what he's doing and lets go. he goes in to take a shower; she joins him and just as they're making out, HE gets into and then she turns off the hot water, leaving him in literally a cold shower.

"Don't ever....do that...to me...again," India says. Phillip chuckles, despite himself.

They were like 24 or 25 years told doing that kind of work. What an amazing era of soaps.

by Anonymousreply 394October 15, 2022 5:32 AM

I just finished watching the Locher Room marathon tribute to Jerry Ver Dorn. Took me three days to get through all 4 hours and 30 minutes, but I really enjoyed it.

Hearing everyone speaking so highly of him was really enlightening. I hadn't realized Jerry was the glue that held the GL cast together, as someone described him. Hadn't realized he was both the cast cheerleader and the sheriff who kept the cast in line.

Amazing turnout from so many cast members. Hats off to Alan or whoever coordinated getting all the stars there at their assigned times. That was quite a feat arranging all that.

So glad to see so many people there talking about Jerry. Especially glad to hear Grant's memories and Peter Simon's memories.

Most glaring absences among the GL cast were Jay Hammer, Jordan Clark and Ron Raines. And of course, Sherry Stringfield was also absent.

Also would have been nice if Suzy Cote had been there. Suzy played Ross's niece, Phillip's sister Samantha Marler from 1989-91.

Most glaring absences among the OLTL cast were Bob Woods and Hillary Bailey Smith.

by Anonymousreply 395October 17, 2022 8:34 PM

I also have to say, it was wonderful to see Kathleen Cullen again. She looks fantastic. She's 68 years old and could pass for mid 40s.

Ditto Grant. He's 62 and could pass for mid 40s.

by Anonymousreply 396October 17, 2022 8:38 PM

Grant really does look terrific. Unlike his wife Sherry who started looking like an old hag as soon as she hit 40.

by Anonymousreply 397October 17, 2022 8:40 PM

Thank you, dear Liz!

by Anonymousreply 398October 17, 2022 10:08 PM

Ross Marler may have ended up the town hero for many decades. However, when he came to Springfield, he was a villain. He arrived in town in March 1979 as the lawyer defending Roger Thorpe on marital rape charges brought by Holly.

by Anonymousreply 399October 18, 2022 12:28 AM

Yes. And Ross came on at a time where it was, as Jerry said several times, a relatively rare and big deal for a contract player to join the show.

by Anonymousreply 400October 19, 2022 4:42 AM

Since so many felt so disdainful of the topic of this thread, you may suggest our next topic here. I will probably ignore you but may, if compelled, use one of your ideas.

by Anonymousreply 401October 19, 2022 4:45 PM

R400 Elvera Roussel said she and Jerry started on the same day or certainly around the same time; Jerry had all these pages of speeches in the courtroom and all Hope had to say was, 'Grandma! I'm home!'

Still a big mistake not bringing her back as Hope to fill the matriarch spot left by Charita and then, Ellen/Maureen.

I'm just glad we were spared Robin Mattson (ex-Hope) coming back and essentially playing Gina opposite Buzz/Keith/Justin Deas.

by Anonymousreply 402October 19, 2022 10:29 PM

Maureen was killed in January 1993 and Santa Barbara was cancelled in January 1993, so Robin Mattson would have been available to come to GL to play Hope.

Plus Robin already already knew JFP from their time together at Santa Barbara and at GH.

Now, I'm wondering why this didn't happen. Maybe JFP didn't realize Robin had played Hope in the 70s.

by Anonymousreply 403October 19, 2022 10:37 PM

R403, that would require Jill to crack open a history book or ask someone at the show the lay of the land.

She talked to Alan Locher on the Locher room about needing to bring on some 'A-list' people to the show.

That's code for I want to give my SB pals some work. While GL had lost Zimmer, Aleksander, Newman, O'Leary, Chamberlin, and DePaiva over the last few months prior to Jill's arrival, the show still had verDorn, Maeve, Peter Simon, Beverlee, and Zaslow.

That's plenty of A-list.

Had Mattson come on, she wouldn't have played Hope; she would have played a version of Gina or Heather or Delia Reid Ryan Ryan Coleridge Crane. It would have been a nightmare.

by Anonymousreply 404October 19, 2022 11:08 PM

r404 I think casting Robin Mattson as Hope would have been a mistake too. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

By 1993, Robin had found her niche playing kooky characters and excelled at it. No need to have her drift away from her specialty area by playing sane and staid Hope. That would be a waste of Robin's talents.

I'm just saying since JFP already had the connection with Robin, I'm surprised JFP didn't automatically bring her over when SB ended, regardless of whether Robin was right for the Hope role. I suspect if JFP had known Robin had previously played Hope, it would have been guaranteed that Robin would return.

Hell JFP brought in Marcy Walker without even having a concept for who the Tangie Hill character was or what her purpose was for being on the show.

by Anonymousreply 405October 19, 2022 11:31 PM

Robin as a recast Nadine, perhaps?

by Anonymousreply 406October 19, 2022 11:39 PM

Robin would have been much better suited to play Nadine than Hope.

When they first brought on the Nadine character in late 1988, my initial response was that they were trying to copy the Gina character from Santa Barbara.

That said, Jean Carol did a great job in the role. I was sad when they killed Nadine off. Nadine was one of the few characters who made the Buzz character tolerable.

by Anonymousreply 407October 19, 2022 11:45 PM

All these replies and no dick pics…hard pass.

by Anonymousreply 408October 20, 2022 1:59 AM

Casting Jean Carol was like casting a fifth billed guest star on an episode of Matlock. Yes, she was right for the role on a superficial level but they could have done so much better.

by Anonymousreply 411October 24, 2022 3:26 PM

R409, I think that played into Nadine's -- for lack of a better word -- trashiness.

the way Alexandra IGNORED her when they first met was classic.

Phillip yelled at Daniel Pilon Spaulding about moving into Alex's bedroom...'you're here with that....MASSEUSE!!'

He said masseuse but you know he meant hooker.
