The Gays and Tennis Part 128 - Adios Serena!

127 is paywalled now, carry on!

by Anonymousreply 436September 2, 2022 6:56 AM

After the 1st set escape, Keys should be able win the match

by Anonymousreply 1August 29, 2022 9:38 PM

Thank you for the new thread, OP.

by Anonymousreply 2August 29, 2022 9:40 PM

FFA level dropped a lot in the 3rd, it's hard to say who is going to win

by Anonymousreply 3August 29, 2022 9:45 PM

Thank Christ you bitches are on it!

by Anonymousreply 4August 29, 2022 9:45 PM

Tippy is through.

by Anonymousreply 5August 29, 2022 9:59 PM

I love the support Thiem is getting from the crowd.

by Anonymousreply 6August 29, 2022 10:01 PM

Thiem has the most beautiful, thrilling one-handed backhand I think I've ever seen. Just marvelous, I'll never tire of seeing it. He's such a sweet guy, too, I hope he comes back.

Thiem also has the most beautiful nipples on the men's tour.

by Anonymousreply 7August 29, 2022 10:07 PM

Alexandra S is wearing "Muumuu by Chagall".

Vibrant!

by Anonymousreply 8August 29, 2022 10:08 PM

Is that Maori paint or a Nicorette patch on Serena's cheek?

by Anonymousreply 9August 29, 2022 10:19 PM

Jesus, just INSANE how ESPN just shows no tennis. Like, no tennis. Just a bunch of stupid ex-players with 8th grade educations explaining for the 1,000th time how Serena is a "legend in our sport." KILL ME NOW

by Anonymousreply 10August 29, 2022 10:24 PM

Damm the Woz is showing some titty.

by Anonymousreply 11August 29, 2022 10:40 PM

yeah, instead of showing live matches, we'll show some practice serves by Serena

by Anonymousreply 12August 29, 2022 10:45 PM

OMG Serena, really? Look at that entrance get-up!

by Anonymousreply 13August 29, 2022 11:23 PM

What? I'm alone in here tonight? Was hoping for a datalounge running commentary...

by Anonymousreply 14August 29, 2022 11:30 PM

Brandon Holt has BIG nipples. Sweating thru his shirt.

Tsitsy loses first set 0-6. What the heck is up with him this year. He seems so angry, petulant, error-prone.

Rooting for Serena, but IT'S A LITTLE MUCH.

by Anonymousreply 15August 29, 2022 11:32 PM

Have to give Serena props for her commitment to sparkles.

Also, that Ukranian singing group was a nice FU to the Russian players LOL

by Anonymousreply 16August 29, 2022 11:35 PM

Let's play name the stars ... so far

Gayle King

by Anonymousreply 17August 29, 2022 11:38 PM

She looks huge

by Anonymousreply 18August 29, 2022 11:38 PM

Very cool that ESPN is running matches on ESPN and ESPN2, love to see that. And nice to hear Jason Gore and Luke Jensen on the call--nice to hear some different voices. Gore, in particular, is good.

by Anonymousreply 19August 29, 2022 11:39 PM

[quote]The publication adds that Williams will around 100 guests on hand, comprising of family and friends, to watch her in action.

by Anonymousreply 20August 29, 2022 11:39 PM

by Anonymousreply 24August 29, 2022 11:50 PM

City Bus stands 0-9 against Galan. 0-6 0-3.

by Anonymousreply 25August 29, 2022 11:52 PM

Mike Tyson, Bill Clinton, Dr. Ruth - all in quick succession

by Anonymousreply 26August 29, 2022 11:53 PM

Is it just me, or is Serena morphing into Esther Rolle?

by Anonymousreply 27August 29, 2022 11:54 PM

omg Greek asshole being served bagels!!!!

by Anonymousreply 28August 29, 2022 11:58 PM

Ironic that the US Open when Citybus can finally officially receive on court coaching from Daddy Dearest he totally implodes! Delicious!

by Anonymousreply 29August 29, 2022 11:59 PM

Serena ain't gonna win this.

by Anonymousreply 30August 29, 2022 11:59 PM

I've been watching Serena for so many years I remember when she was blonde.

by Anonymousreply 31August 30, 2022 12:00 AM

Is Serena's bff Meghan there?

by Anonymousreply 32August 30, 2022 12:01 AM

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Greek asshole has won his first game. 0-6 1-5.

by Anonymousreply 33August 30, 2022 12:04 AM

No sighting of Meghan yet. No doubt she didn't want to upstage Serena with her scintillating royal presence!

by Anonymousreply 34August 30, 2022 12:04 AM

No sighting of Meghan yet. No doubt she didn't want to upstage Serena with her scintillating royal presence!

by Anonymousreply 35August 30, 2022 12:04 AM

Serena must be so hot in that outfit, it's not helping her really...

by Anonymousreply 36August 30, 2022 12:04 AM

it is so HUMID out there!

by Anonymousreply 37August 30, 2022 12:05 AM

Just saw the useless cunt Mayor Eric Adams, wearing a sparkly suit.

by Anonymousreply 38August 30, 2022 12:06 AM

Rebel Wilson is there and glam.

by Anonymousreply 39August 30, 2022 12:13 AM

maybe the greek asshole's daddy is yapping too much...

by Anonymousreply 40August 30, 2022 12:14 AM

Rebel looks punctured in her new body. Like they let the air out of her. Looks very strange.

by Anonymousreply 41August 30, 2022 12:14 AM

coco gauff is there watching

by Anonymousreply 42August 30, 2022 12:19 AM

Sad to see Domicakes gone in the first round.

by Anonymousreply 43August 30, 2022 12:31 AM

I'm so sad too. but he's playing better, hopefully next year...

by Anonymousreply 44August 30, 2022 12:43 AM

Just saw Queen latifa, also seen spike lee

by Anonymousreply 45August 30, 2022 12:44 AM

King Latifa

by Anonymousreply 46August 30, 2022 12:45 AM

shouldn't serena's kid be going to bed already? the kid has a lot of energy at bed time. too much sugar probably

by Anonymousreply 47August 30, 2022 12:47 AM

I can't believe martina navratilova brought her dog.

by Anonymousreply 48August 30, 2022 12:47 AM

Is Martina gonna fuck Latifah aster the match?

by Anonymousreply 49August 30, 2022 12:49 AM

greek asshole's whole outfit is wet...they are sticking to his body.

by Anonymousreply 50August 30, 2022 12:50 AM

After being privileged to see the thrilling US Open final in which Thiem won, it’s a pity we won’t be able to see him replicate that magic.

by Anonymousreply 51August 30, 2022 12:50 AM

Mrs. Astor

by Anonymousreply 52August 30, 2022 12:50 AM

what did serena put on her hands?

by Anonymousreply 53August 30, 2022 12:51 AM

Thiem should have been shown some respect, and given a stadium match, having won 2 years ago The Covid Open. He couldn't play last year.

The Gauff hype is just as bad as The Serena Goat bs. Madison Keys will blow CoCo away in a few days, and that NuBalance commercial will mercifully be shelved.

by Anonymousreply 54August 30, 2022 12:58 AM

Gladys Knight, sans Pips

by Anonymousreply 55August 30, 2022 12:59 AM

just saw hugh jackman with his loving wife/beard

by Anonymousreply 56August 30, 2022 1:00 AM

Daddy Fritz in trouble against young Brandon Holt.

by Anonymousreply 57August 30, 2022 1:07 AM

wow, Serena raised her level and is gonna win this

by Anonymousreply 58August 30, 2022 1:09 AM

Serena is happy.

by Anonymousreply 59August 30, 2022 1:13 AM

Serena won, so now they will show the tribute and when the fuck will Nick K play? They will be playing until 1am

by Anonymousreply 60August 30, 2022 1:14 AM

Gayle King's dress is too low cut. Kids are watching. fucking gross.

by Anonymousreply 61August 30, 2022 1:18 AM

ALL THIS CELEB ASS KISSING IS GROSS. GO FUCK O-PRAH, GAYLE KING. THE JAPANESE LINE JUDGE WHO SERENA THREATENED TO STUFF A BALL DOWN HER THROAT, WILL APPEAR ON COURT TO APOLOGIZE TO SERENA IN HER FINAL MATCH.

NOW BJK IS PUKING LUV TO RI RI.

CHRISSIE IS JUST PRAYING RI RI WILL STAYED TIED WITH HER FOR THE MOST OPEN CROWNS, AT 6.

by Anonymousreply 62August 30, 2022 1:21 AM

Now there's a name I associate with tennis excellence; OPRAH!

by Anonymousreply 63August 30, 2022 1:24 AM

Serena has def has some face moles removed, looking at this old video.

by Anonymousreply 64August 30, 2022 1:26 AM

This is too much. I want to see Nick K play!!!

by Anonymousreply 65August 30, 2022 1:26 AM

I cannot stand Gayle King. stfu already!

by Anonymousreply 66August 30, 2022 1:27 AM

Yeah, I've switched over to Tsitsy now. Galan really fancying his chances - they're even in the 4th set now.

by Anonymousreply 67August 30, 2022 1:29 AM

Tsitsy and Galan on ESPN2.

by Anonymousreply 68August 30, 2022 1:30 AM

[quote] Serena has def has some face moles removed

We are glad you noticed that. Galan also has visible face and neck moles. He should have those removed.

by Anonymousreply 69August 30, 2022 1:32 AM

This ceremony is lasting longer than Isner-Mahout.

by Anonymousreply 70August 30, 2022 1:33 AM

I think we saw why Thiem wasn’t given a show court. God love him but he’s still a shadow of his winning self.

by Anonymousreply 71August 30, 2022 1:39 AM

Glad for Serena to have this ceremony when she’s coming off a win.

by Anonymousreply 72August 30, 2022 1:40 AM

I still don't really understand what went wrong with Thiem.

by Anonymousreply 73August 30, 2022 1:40 AM

wow, Galan had 5 match points in that game but Tsitsy still won it.

Galan's leg has a cut that's dripping blood as well.

by Anonymousreply 74August 30, 2022 1:45 AM

by Anonymousreply 77August 30, 2022 1:51 AM

[quote] Brandon Holt has BIG nipples. Sweating thru his shirt.

Showing Daddy Fritz and Holt on ESPN 2 now. Brief shot of Tracy Austin. I'm not seeing the prominent nips. Perhaps not sweaty enough.

by Anonymousreply 78August 30, 2022 1:55 AM

big names losing today...

by Anonymousreply 79August 30, 2022 1:56 AM

fritz is out. damn, another DL bf bites the dust

by Anonymousreply 80August 30, 2022 1:58 AM

by Anonymousreply 83August 30, 2022 1:59 AM

damn, i thought he was gonna play much better because he hasn't been checking his phone, staying off social media etc..

made no difference. also his gf lives in NY? probably spending too much time with her...

by Anonymousreply 84August 30, 2022 2:03 AM

geez, this is Galan's first maindraw match at USO and he beat the #4 seed in the opening, not just beat him, a bagel and a breadsitck, this is unbelievable!

by Anonymousreply 85August 30, 2022 2:05 AM

Nick still doing the underarm serves.

by Anonymousreply 86August 30, 2022 2:06 AM

I'm so glad stinky tits lost. I can't stand that lingering bathroom break piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 87August 30, 2022 2:06 AM

Why is this match just getting underway at 10PM?

by Anonymousreply 88August 30, 2022 2:14 AM

Fernandez's tits are so saggy and low for a teenager!

by Anonymousreply 89August 30, 2022 2:21 AM

I come home to see Serena won - nice. Tsitsipas lost after getting blown out in the first two sets and Fritz lost to the 300-ranked son of Tracy Austin? The first day has been a lot.

I was wondering where everyone went since the last thread was only 450ish posts.

by Anonymousreply 90August 30, 2022 2:29 AM

"I still don't really understand what went wrong with Thiem." He got injured and was out and the road back is a long one and isn't destined to happen.

by Anonymousreply 91August 30, 2022 2:31 AM

Looking forward to the Battle of the Booty between Giron and Tiafoe tomorrow (i think tomorrow).

by Anonymousreply 92August 30, 2022 2:32 AM

Thiem had 2 issues. The first is he's always been a headcase. We saw it took him a few finals to finally get a slam and just barely because Zverev out-choked him. Then after winning. Thiem didn't handle the pressure well and started bombing out of most tournaments he entered. Then he suffered a wrist injury which needed surgery so he's just coming back.

He showed flashes of good form in Winston-Salem last week but was gifted the 2 matches he won thanks to Wolf choking and then Dimitrov having to retire. The fact that he even won a set today is a good sign but the bad news this is only his second loss to PCB, Thiem is now 8-2 against him. I assume he'll play in the fall Euro indoor swing now

by Anonymousreply 93August 30, 2022 3:02 AM

Fritz' social media influencer gf looks so trashy especially her nails tonight. I know his baby mama/ex-wife must be pissed that he's blowing so much money on this girl.

by Anonymousreply 94August 30, 2022 3:05 AM

Nick k's box has to stand up to cheer for him or he will lose his shit

by Anonymousreply 95August 30, 2022 3:06 AM

Are we going to endure this waaaaaaaaaaaaaay overblown worship of serena after every match she wins?

it was beyond embarrassing and overblown! You do the tribute when she loses or if she wins the whole thing, not after a damn 1st round match!

sickening attention seeking celebs only there to be seen when they don't give a shit about tennis, don't know the game and don't know serena.. all of them left after her match! yeah, TRUE tennis fans with their free tickets to the best seats! uh huh..

gayle king? enough said....

by Anonymousreply 96August 30, 2022 3:06 AM

I'm happy tonight and tomorrow espn and espn2 will be on at night but I wish they'd extend it through Thursday. There are so many potentially good matches not on Ashe for the first 2 rounds

this Kyrgios-Kokkinakis match is predictably a dud. I get it they know Kyrgios likes to put on a show and he is the Wimbledon finalist but Kokkinakis just doesn't have enough game to bother him.

Kokkinakis just lost to Duckworth of all people last week in Winston-Salem final set tiebreak

by Anonymousreply 97August 30, 2022 3:06 AM

[quote] You do the tribute when she loses or if she wins the whole thing, not after a damn 1st round match!

They did it tonight in case she didn't make it past the first round.

by Anonymousreply 98August 30, 2022 3:08 AM

remember as posted in the last thread, the USO is the BEST of the slams when it comes to highlights. I've started working my through today's action. I think they're doing just about every single's match so if there's a player you didn't see on tv you can see something on their site

by Anonymousreply 99August 30, 2022 3:08 AM

I knew Kovinic was a winnable match for Serena. She's an inconsistent player. Kontaveit will be much tougher and probably Serena's last match

by Anonymousreply 100August 30, 2022 3:08 AM

So next year, Venus gonna retire right?

by Anonymousreply 101August 30, 2022 3:09 AM

Yeah, Kovinic was awful (a brainless player) but Anett should end this thing at least.

by Anonymousreply 102August 30, 2022 3:10 AM

"You do the tribute when she loses or if she wins the whole thing, not after a damn 1st round match!"

She's going to get a tribute no matter what. Much easier to just schedule it and hold it it rather than having the people in place and on call at each match. I don't see the problem.

by Anonymousreply 103August 30, 2022 3:15 AM

Roddickanu, future International Tennis Hall of Fame inductee.

by Anonymousreply 104August 30, 2022 3:33 AM

Damn Greek asshole lost to a qualifier and so did Taylor Fritz....maybe a qualifier will win the men's this year! who knows?

by Anonymousreply 105August 30, 2022 4:14 AM

matt damon was at the serena match. I didn't see him

by Anonymousreply 126August 30, 2022 4:19 PM

Alcaraz already wasted an opportunity to break against Baez🤦‍♂️

by Anonymousreply 127August 30, 2022 4:27 PM

Ferrero looks hot as usual😍

by Anonymousreply 128August 30, 2022 4:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 133August 30, 2022 4:46 PM

R133 Same. He is not playing well today, making way too many errors.

by Anonymousreply 134August 30, 2022 4:47 PM

He finally managed to break. Alcaraz won first set 7-5.

by Anonymousreply 135August 30, 2022 5:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 139August 30, 2022 5:20 PM

Baez gets the break!!!! Wtf was that? Holy shit that game was messy. Alcaraz spraying errors again.

by Anonymousreply 140August 30, 2022 5:33 PM

This Alcaraz vs Baez match is insane! These shots are crazy!

by Anonymousreply 141August 30, 2022 5:43 PM

I love Baez. He's a pocket dynamo. Big heart and big balls. Like Lil' Diego.

by Anonymousreply 142August 30, 2022 5:54 PM

Alcaraz double faults and Baez gets the break lol!

by Anonymousreply 143August 30, 2022 6:02 PM

Now Baez double faults and Alcaraz gets the break back!

by Anonymousreply 144August 30, 2022 6:09 PM

Baez has gorgeous thighs

by Anonymousreply 145August 30, 2022 6:26 PM

And then Baez hits the ball and then the other one hits the ball and then it's the other guy's turn and then HE hits the ball hard and they run around and keep hitting the ball until one of them hits it into the net or it goes out. And then they keep doing that for (four?) It's crazy!!!

by Anonymousreply 146August 30, 2022 6:26 PM

Djere soaked white shorts alert, Court 5.

by Anonymousreply 147August 30, 2022 6:28 PM

Nice job from old warhorse, Dicky Gasquet, against Taro Daniel. Also entertained with soaked white shorts. Should be made compulsory in sultry conditions.

by Anonymousreply 148August 30, 2022 6:29 PM

This match is over now. 7-5 in the second set too. No way Alcaraz loses this.

by Anonymousreply 149August 30, 2022 6:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 154August 30, 2022 6:43 PM

I am not seeing Stef's press conference video on the US Open website. I wonder if he skipped the press afterwards? What a disappointing year he has had. Just seems so grouchy and out of it. I think the criticism that he took last year about the extended bathroom breaks really got to him, mentally.

In other news Fritz was bulging pretty good last night, so we get a sense of what baby mama saw in him when he finally was legal. (I'm sure he was boning her before that, of course.)

Alacaraz with a nice sweaty bulge today, too.

Seriously, tho, what a sweet young man he is. Great attitude, friendly, smart, enjoying himself. Humble. Not surprising, as his mom Tracy Austin is supposed to be great. She's got a great reputation and everyone seems to like her in the tennis world.

by Anonymousreply 180August 30, 2022 10:12 PM

There are many who contend that former champs should always be permitted to enter.

I’m not a huge fan of that myself, but Venus really was a star who did a whole lot for the sport.

by Anonymousreply 181August 30, 2022 10:16 PM

I guess it boils down to whether she's still a draw or not so they probably cynically figure that she's more of a draw than your average 1st round scrub.

Wonderful great-ass diversity. I feel Tiafoe's ass will age better and will remain relatively high and tight later on. I think Giron will get more middle age "spread" and get flabbier. But let's focus on the youthful hotness of both asses.

by Anonymousreply 184August 30, 2022 10:22 PM

Raducanu fell back to Earth tonight. I think she needs more time to develop her game. Cornet is 1 of those players who either gives top players hell or she gets blown off the court. Her game is different and scrappy.

Tiafoe and Giron should have flip fucked at the end of their match. They both looked hot. Nice to see Giron in sleeveless for a change.

McEnroe said tonight that Shapovalov "is like a young stallion who needs to be reined in" lol

Fognini came from 2 sets down against Karatsev

by Anonymousreply 217August 31, 2022 2:07 AM

Raducanu is young and hopefully makes the necessary improvements. Seeing people online completely write her off is ridiculous. No one knows how she will develop as a player. She is still so new to the tour and I truly think her dream win last year came too fast, too soon. However, better to win one than not do so.

by Anonymousreply 218August 31, 2022 2:14 AM

Well right now Raducanu is the worst of the WTA's random slam winners. Kenin and Stephens made a slam final within the next year. Pennetta was a regular top 20 player for a decade. Ostapenko floats around the top 25. Rybakina and Krejcikova however might provide some stiff competition.

Maybe she shouldn't have immediately fired her coach after winning a slam.

by Anonymousreply 219August 31, 2022 2:15 AM

I get that some find the media circus around Serena retiring to be over the top but she is undisputably one of the best to ever play. Considering the WTA post-Serena is going to be a dumpster fire, especially if Osaka calls it quits like I expect, then lavishing all this attention on her makes sense becuase there's nothing else left.

And I have to give Serena credit for not dragging out this retirement tour. She could've said she'll retire next year but she clearly hates losing and doesn't want to tarnish her legacy unlike her sister who clearly could not give a shit about losing to anyone these days.

by Anonymousreply 220August 31, 2022 2:23 AM

Once again that coach couldn't travel with her or commit to her. He was with her just for that tournament because he works with his son who is a teen playing tennis competitively. People need to stop bringing that up. She couldnt keep him as a coach.

are players allowed to simultaneously play the pro tour and senior tour? I ask because I happened to flip on 1 of the lesser sports channels over the weekend and they had on the champions league. It was taped back in the spring. Who was on? It was Tommy Haas playing against Querrey!!! I was shocked. I know Querrey just retired tonight but he was still pro then. I didn't watch the whole match because I don't like Querrey but that was weird

Come on, Danielle! Put Miss Naomi out of, like, her misery.

by Anonymousreply 227August 31, 2022 2:49 AM

Hijikata is cute and has spunk. He needs to develop more weapons though. He caught Nadal by surprise to start the match but after that wasn't able to bother him enough. He did blow a couple chances to get back on serve at 3-4 in the 4th set. I think he should model his game after De Minaur who is a similar shorter speed demon

by Anonymousreply 228August 31, 2022 2:51 AM

Collins played well but Osaka was dumb. Too many balls to the Collins rock solid backhand and also a lot of brainless errors

I wonder if Osaka will play any more the rest of the year or she won't come back again until Australia? She seems burnt out.

by Anonymousreply 236August 31, 2022 4:30 AM

Collins will probably lose Rd 3. She will have a match where she can barely keep the ball in like usual.

by Anonymousreply 237August 31, 2022 4:31 AM

US Open star tanks so badly he packs his bag to leave BEFORE the match even finishes - after not trying at all for two sets in embarrassing effort he'll be paid $116,000 for

French player Benoit Paire has tanked his US Open match against Brit Cameron Norrie so brazenly that he had his bag packed before the match had even finished.

Norrie breezed to a 6-0, 7-6, 6-0 victory on a sweltering court where his opponent Paire hardly seemed to try, with the first set lasting only 18 minutes and the third only going one minute longer.

Paire was so dispirited at 0-5 down in the third, he packed his equipment bag - despite having one more game still to play.

The Frenchman, who has a history of tanking matches and was warned for not trying at Wimbledon in 2021, will receive $80,000 (AU$117,000) for his 98-minute appearance.

However, the Grand Slam board could strip him of his prize money if they decide he deliberately stopped playing to win.

Norrie suggested after the match that maybe Paire's behaviour was related to the heat.

'Obviously it was really hot, and maybe towards the end of that third set he was playing really quick and trying to make the points really short, and maybe the heat was getting to him,' said Norrie diplomatically.

Ranked 173 in the world, Paire has had just four wins in 2022 and admitted after the match that he didn't want to be out there.

'It's not easy since the beginning of the year,' he told reporters. 'I feel bad on court and it was the same today.'

The veteran also suggested he might not play tennis again this year.

'I took a little holiday. Now I'm going back on holiday, so it was just a little break between my holidays. I did what I could.

'I was winning 5-3, I should have been able to take the second set. It would have done me good in the head, but my demons are back again.

'The double faults and that started again, always the same. I do what I can. I'm 167 in the world [he's 173rd], I let myself go, we'll see where it goes.

'I'm not sure to continue this season, maybe to stop here and see if I start again next year.'

Tennis fans were quick to criticise Paire's disgraceful effort on social media.

'Benoit Paire gets 80,000 US Dollars despite making zero effort in his first round match against Norrie. Shocking really, hope they give him a huge fine,' wrote one Twitter user.

'Cam Norrie beats the barely trying Benoit Paire in 6-0 7-6 6-0. First set took 18 minutes, the third 19 minutes. If it was a horse race there would be a stewards' inquiry,' commented a second.

'In Benoit Paire's defence, I too turn up at my job everyday with the attitude of someone that would rather be anywhere else in the world,' joked a third.

Rinky Hijikata's dad is also a tennis coach

by Anonymousreply 241August 31, 2022 4:59 AM

so sick of Paire's entitlement. There are hundreds of players who'd love to be able to play on the pro tour. If he's not happy playing then retire from the game. His schtick of tanking matches just to earn a first round check is nauseating and he should be fined heavily. I won't miss him when he's finally gone from the sport.

1 of the big knocks on Raducanu is that while it's obviously very impressive to win the USO in her debut and having to go through qualifying (so 10 matches consecutively) she did so without playing the top 10 players. Last year had so many upsets in her half of the draw. Now certainly that wasn't her fault but there was a stark contrast between her path to the final and the number of title contenders Fernandez had to go through. So critics said Raducanu would have to prove herself in the following year. She has struggled since then and still has hardly faced any current top players. This year the only top 20 players she faced were Rybakina, Swiatek and Pegula-they all beat her in straight sets. Since her ranking was inflated due to the USO win, she faced mostly players between #40-80 and would win here and there but mostly lose before having to face anyone in the top 30. Now her ranking might plummet down to the low 70s. I hope she plays a decent fall schedule. I don't love or hate Raducanu and think she needs more time to develop but she has to deal with both massive hype and massive criticism. Her situation is unique. It'll be interesting to see how she fares now that she can draw a top 10 player in the opening round of tournaments.

This is the best thing to happen to Raducanu.

She has good potential but I think last year’s title run was bad for her in so many ways, especially that she thinks she’s so special that she doesn’t really need a steady coach. That means she doesn’t really have to listen to them.

That’s all going to change now. The hype has run its course.

Smashing his racquet AND a courtside bench in Washington in 2018, a spitting scandal in Argentina and taking his anger out on a wall in France... Benoit Paire was accused of 'tanking' in his latest US Open loss, but meltdowns are nothing new

March 2021 - Argentina Open

This was a shameful episode from Paire.

Paire crashed out in Buenos Aires, losing 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to Francisco Cerundolo - but this was all about his conduct - or lack of - on court.

Paire, then world No 29, was furious at a line call that awarded Cerundolo an ace in the second set.

The Frenchman contested it, arguing furiously with the chair umpire before spitting on the mark when it wasn't overturned.

By this point Paire couldn't be bothered and was docked a point in the same set for spitting for a second time. Down 5-1 in the third, he made what looked like two deliberate double-faults to tank the match.

Remorseful afterwards? Not quite, he posted a screenshot of his £6.1million career earnings. 'In the end it's worth it to suck,' he wrote.

January 2021 - Interclubs match in France

Back in his native France, Paire was apoplectic with rage at an indoor Interclubs event.

In footage captured by a stunned spectator, Paire launches his racquet at the wall to the bemusement of courtside staff after a botched serve against Pedro Martinez.

'In tennis, you go through all the stages, it's a rollercoaster, but it's something I love, also when I get crazy,' Paire told Society Magazine in 2019. 'Having said that, I think that now I am calmer than before, I am progressing.'

He must have a different idea of progressing towards calmness based on this episode.

August 2018 - Citi Open

This is perhaps the biggest meltdown of Paire's career to date.

Paire was booed off court after a petulant performance that saw him lose his mind as he smashed his racquet several times on court, before kicking out at the court-side bench seating.

Down 6-3, 3-6, 2-4 in the final set, Paire lost his footing trying to pull off an overhead smash volley.

He was furious and proceeded to smash his racquet onto the hard court four times before getting back on his feet and launching the racquet.

Paire wasn't done at the change of ends though, kicking out at a bench and proceeding to smash the new racquet out of his bag onto the court.

Marcos Baghdatis was able to hold serve to win the match and Paire proceeded to break another racquet before congratulating his opponent.

A $16,500 fine felt a let-off in the grand scheme of things.

by Anonymousreply 270August 31, 2022 6:44 PM

And Cachin has given us a lot of crotch watching. Madre de Dios bendita! I even took pics.... that crotch was the best part of the US Open so far.

by Anonymousreply 271August 31, 2022 6:59 PM

I love Misery

by Anonymousreply 272August 31, 2022 7:16 PM

Patrick McEnroe just said Andy’s long been a leader in the locker room.

So what exactly is he leading? “Hey, guys. Our wives and girlfriends will never know. Time to spread some boy batter!”

by Anonymousreply 273August 31, 2022 7:22 PM

Draper said he grew up idolizing Murray

by Anonymousreply 274August 31, 2022 7:29 PM

Isn’t it boy butter, Andy?

by Anonymousreply 275August 31, 2022 7:30 PM

Murray's section has really opened up ow with Tsitsipas and Fritz gone

by Anonymousreply 276August 31, 2022 7:30 PM

Can't stand the King Latihoh commercials.

by Anonymousreply 277August 31, 2022 7:30 PM

McEnroe is correct that Nadal often gets special treatment. We know there are plenty of times he tests the limits of time permitted between points. Some umpires call him on it and others don't. Obviously if it's a super long point then you can cut the players some slack. There are times when he does it repeatedly though and then gets pissed when he does get warned

by Anonymousreply 278August 31, 2022 7:36 PM

Murray or Berrettini should make the QF with Paul or Ruud being the players of note in that section to the SF

by Anonymousreply 279August 31, 2022 7:37 PM

Is Tommy playing shirtless today?

by Anonymousreply 280August 31, 2022 7:39 PM

Cachin is very, very hot. Bulging big today, too. Sorry for Holt, but nice story for Cachin.

by Anonymousreply 281August 31, 2022 7:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 290August 31, 2022 8:36 PM

I'm not sorry for Holt. He's a bore. Only reason anyone cares is because he's Tracy Austin's son, so he's a tennis legacy. Plus he had a two set lead. If he can't close it out, there's no reason to feel sorry for him.

by Anonymousreply 291August 31, 2022 9:15 PM

Fuck boy Bonzi is playing Kyrgios.

by Anonymousreply 292August 31, 2022 9:17 PM

Korda went from big hype to super meh relatively quickly. He'll have a successful career - he already has - but I'm not seeing Slam titles.

by Anonymousreply 293August 31, 2022 9:20 PM

strange that brandon holt is a dud in the looks department... tracy was attractive when she was young and her husband was a pretty boy hunk back in the day as well..... brandon plays like a college player, a steady backboard no weapons and his 2nd serve is about as bad as his mother's was! .....

by Anonymousreply 294August 31, 2022 9:26 PM

Makes sense, he was a college tennis player, and outside of beating Fritz here and almost winning a second round, he hasn't done much at all before this USO. He's been a Challenger/futures level (the AA and AAA levels of tennis) player and was ranked 300 in the world coming in. He needed a wild card just to get into qualifying. Good for him for making the most of it, but I don't really see this being a huge springboard where he'll be in the Top 100.

by Anonymousreply 295August 31, 2022 9:30 PM

Wow, you guys seem really nice. Holt I guess is a total nobody and has no future, LOL.

Bonzi, however, is very sexy and I'd like to be on my knees servicing him.

by Anonymousreply 296August 31, 2022 9:52 PM

The bore is CoCo mania. Keys will likely beat her next round, she has the power CoCo can't handle, and Keys will be keyed up to do it. That moron Chris McHendry told some guy we are blessed to have CoCo. Way to be objective.

by Anonymousreply 297August 31, 2022 9:53 PM

Ugh, just seeing now that ESPN2 is running WNBA tonight, not Louis Armstrong. So I gotta suffer thru the Serena show on ESPN. Maybe I'll stream Armstrong instead. I like Serena, but it's all a little much.

by Anonymousreply 298August 31, 2022 9:54 PM

Dont think there will be a show like yesterday. But if she loses I'm sure there will be an interview.

by Anonymousreply 299August 31, 2022 9:59 PM

I should say if she wins or loses I bet theres an interview.

by Anonymousreply 300August 31, 2022 10:00 PM

Soooooooooooo sick of the worshipping altar or Serena, a combination of martin luther king and harriet tubman in a dress!

martina, steffi, evert and court all have records comparable to serena, greater than serena and more than serena!...

of course, that destroys the narrative doesn't it! morons on espn morning shows who know nothing about tennis (one actually called chris evert, chris evert lloyd!) shocked that ANYONE could even think to argue about OTHERS as the greatest! James Blake's brain actually goes brain dead and it doesn't compute when someone brings up martina and steffi and evert....

People stating how serena is different because of what had to endure? Oh really? Want to talk about Althea Gibson? Even more so want to talk about someone who had the claim to greatest of all time, Martina Navratilova! Someone who had to DEFECT FROM HER COUNTRY at 18, at a time when if it was found out she wanted to defect would have literally been kidnapped, taken back to czechoslovakia never to be seen or heard from again, and then had no family or friends or coaches and didn't see her parents for years!...

And his box obviously don't mind because he's paying them and/or they get off on the verbal abuse!...Anyone else with self respect ( AND NOT ego attention by association whore) would have said "FUCK YOU WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TALKING TO?!" long ago and walked out of that box forever..

Kontaveit looks so cute in her outfit.

by Anonymousreply 343September 1, 2022 12:09 AM

Without being too conceited, I'll bet anything I have that I know more about tennis history and records, than all of the commentators put together.

by Anonymousreply 348September 1, 2022 12:54 AM

Serena took her whole bag into the bathroom. What is she doing?

by Anonymousreply 349September 1, 2022 12:57 AM

Kontaveit just hit an ace to win the game and set and…dead silence, but standing ovations every time Serena wins a point. These people suck. Fuck them.

by Anonymousreply 350September 1, 2022 12:59 AM

yes I know, I was just telling my partner, the whole place was quiet, nobody clapped for her

by Anonymousreply 351September 1, 2022 1:00 AM

what percentage of the crowd are 1) true year round knowledgeable tennis fans and 2) drunk already? 3) there to be "seen"....

by Anonymousreply 352September 1, 2022 1:10 AM

Something tells me Serena has one more highly awkward and uncomfortable on-court meltdown left in her.

by Anonymousreply 353September 1, 2022 1:11 AM

Is Tennis etiquette dead? crowds cheering faults and double faults, yelling constantly between and during points and so on....

Serena's husband just yelled "FUCK" ! with the camera on him/his face....Classy!...

Tiger looks like he's on something...

by Anonymousreply 354September 1, 2022 1:13 AM

she keeps adjusting that stupid headband

by Anonymousreply 357September 1, 2022 1:24 AM

R354, US Open crowds are like this all the time.

by Anonymousreply 360September 1, 2022 1:35 AM

Serena looks more like a woman with every passing day.

by Anonymousreply 361September 1, 2022 1:37 AM

Obviously the crowd will overwhelmingly support her in what could be her last match. They dont want her career to end. Btw Serena is moving pretty darn good and that is when she is scary to play.

by Anonymousreply 362September 1, 2022 1:42 AM

Serena has not played this well in years. Major props to Kontaveit for as well as she's played with the crowd against her.

by Anonymousreply 363September 1, 2022 1:42 AM

Now maybe they’ll finally let Medvedev start, now that the Queen has finished her match.

by Anonymousreply 364September 1, 2022 1:46 AM

Oh god, and here we have Oprah. JFC.

Krejčíková also out. Women's seeds are falling like flies.

by Anonymousreply 368September 1, 2022 2:14 AM

just incredible by Serena to be over 40 and beating the #2 player. Hopefully she can stay physically healthy for her next match

Kontaveit seems like a nice person but she's severely over ranked. She's never done well at the slams or even come close to winning a Masters. She is mostly an indoors specialist of mid-size events. She really shouldn't be more than #8 to #12

by Anonymousreply 369September 1, 2022 2:19 AM

lol the camera is panning the crowd after the 2nd set in the FAA-Draper match while they take a bathroom break. A gay couple just sat down after getting refreshments and they're double fisting with beer.

by Anonymousreply 370September 1, 2022 2:32 AM

It’s so funny that old friends Dionne Warwick and Gladys Knight were both at Serena’s match, and not only were they not sitting together, but Dionne was in grandstand and poor Gladys was up in the nosebleeds. Meanwhile Spike Lee is sitting courtside looking like he’s on a supervised visit from his convalescent home.

by Anonymousreply 371September 1, 2022 2:36 AM

by Anonymousreply 372September 1, 2022 2:46 AM

FAA has really dropped off the past 5 months.

by Anonymousreply 379September 1, 2022 3:16 AM

composed match by Draper to win. He's really surging up the rankings

FAA continues to disappoint. I really thought once he finally got that title this year he'd start playing consistently like a top player but nope. He's so up and down still.

by Anonymousreply 380September 1, 2022 3:17 AM

Fun watching Draper struggle to put his jacket on.

by Anonymousreply 381September 1, 2022 3:18 AM

Weird thing about FAA, is he seemed to be on the rise. Good Slam results last year, great Australian Open this year, then finally wins his first title after 8 finals losses. But from Indian Wells onward, except a decent French Open, he's been pretty bad and getting worse. Slam season over - FAA needs to reassess.

Draper is cute.

Drama at the US Open as Nick Kyrgios complains a fan is smoking MARIJUANA, is warned for spitting - and takes a HUGE swipe at America after the match: 'Very different to the way we live Down Under'

Kyrgios somehow found new grounds for complaint as he told the chair umpire during the third set that he was being affected by marijuana smoke in the air; which commentators said 'they'd never heard of before'.

'It was f***ing marajiuana. It was smoke. Obviously I'm not going to complain about food,' Kyrgios could be heard saying in the on-court microphone.

'When athletes are running side to side and they have asthma, it's probably not ideal.'

He was then issued with a code violation for abusing his own team, and could be seen releasing a huge spray of spit; earning a conduct warning and disgusting fans in the stadium and those watching from home.

After the match, Kyrgios then took a huge swipe at New York - despite the 'Big Apple' being regarded as one of the great cities of the world.

'It's very different to the way we live Down Under (in Australia). It's a crazy place, I don't know how anyone can live here,' he said in an interview on-court after his win.

The wheels were well and truly starting to come off and despite being able to close out the second-round match, Channel 9 commentator Todd Woodbridge said it was high time a coach ended his self-destructive tendency to lash out at others whenever he was not playing well.

'At some point the people who are sitting in his players box need to take some action,' Woodbridge said on the broadcast.

'That action should probably be standing up and walking out. They've got nothing to do with what goes on on the court. That is up to Nick.'

Kyrgios insisted during the post-match press conference, however, he was the consummate professional.

'Every day I come in, I watch what I eat, I try and get sleep …every practice session I try and have good intent,' said Kyrgios, who can often be seen canoodling and playing around with girlfriend Costeen Hatzi during training.

'I almost don't know who I am anymore, to be honest, because that's not me. I'm trying to balance so many different things out (there) … it's just a lot.

'I feel like I'm really professional right now,' said Kyrgios, in a comment that will no doubt raise a few eyebrows around the tennis world.

This isn't the first time Kyrgios' has caused a stir at the US Open with remarks about marijuana.

Six years ago, he responded to a Twitter follower confirming that players on tour were allowed to smoke it.

The comment earned the ire of sports doping organisation WADA, with a spokesperson later confirming marijuana use is in fact banned during competition, though it is not prohibited when used outside of competition.

Kyrgios admitted it has been 'stressful' for him during the lead-up to the Open, and is relieved to have advanced.

by Anonymousreply 383September 1, 2022 4:15 AM

I was literally hanging by a thread. His (opponent Benjamin Bonzi) level today was incredible. I was not expecting an absolute war,' Kyrgios said of his stoic opponent.

'It could have gone either way early in the fourth but I got there. I played some really risky tennis late in that fourth set to win.

'I'm just really happy to get through. It's been really stressful time I have high expectations to go deep this week.

'I felt like he was eating up my serves with his returns. To serve 30 aces helps a lot. When my serve's going my game follows,' said Kyrgios.

The animated Aussie has now booked his spot in the third round, where he will take on cult US star JJ Wolf.

OMG everything is leading to CoCo, GOAT to BE, having to see the one to put Serena down. And God forbid, if the lanky teen NuBalance superstar, loses to a 40 year old, her career is over before it really gets started. It's inevitable.

by Anonymousreply 393September 1, 2022 8:50 AM

[quote]Kontaveit just hit an ace to win the game and set and…dead silence

But you have to understand that tennis fans believe that a career like Serena's deserves a fairy tale ending like they once had in 2002. Seeing a former star of the game, obviously American, who hasn't won three matches in a row for years, and pretty much long relegated to the dustbin of history, suddenly wins seven matches in a row and ends his career on an unbelievable climax. It was Pete Sampras' back then and they think it should be Serena's this time.

My sexuality is Jack Draper's jawline!

R394 Sampras didn't deserve it in 2002, and Serena doesn't now. They are 2 of the most selfish champions ever. Someone count the number of times they both bailed on tournaments they didn't want to finish. They both had the biggest serves of their heyday, that is true. Serena had been a thug, pure and simple. She threatened to shove a ball down the throat of that lady line judge. The shrieking that accelerates during a critical point, and the loud COME ON! are pure gamesmanship. No wonder Billie Jean King loves her. I saw Sampras tank a match in brutal heat in Cincy some years ago, he barely tried. He did that in numerous non GS events.

Kyrgios is a pig, but I have to laugh at him criticizing New York. It's become part of the tournament ritual that players are basically required to fawn all over the city and the fans.

by Anonymousreply 397September 1, 2022 1:36 PM

I can hardly wait for his inevitable meltdown. I hope it happens at night under the hate.

by Anonymousreply 398September 1, 2022 2:12 PM

Yes, I can't wait to see Nick k's meltdown. You know it's coming.

Do you think Serena gonna beat Ailja T?

by Anonymousreply 399September 1, 2022 2:34 PM

I have no idea if Serena can beat Ailja. I don't know what to expect of her. Kontaveit may be, historically, one of the weakest No. 2 seeds at a Slam. But, she's a good player and was still surprised Serena beat her. Serena is SO far past her prime and looked like shit in Canada and had such a weak opponent in the first round. I'm a fan, but I just never expected Serena to do anything at the USO. Of course the rumblings have started that she's going to go out in a blaze of glory, winning her last Slam, tying Margaret Court's 24 Slam record, and riding off into the sunset. I'd love to see it, but IMO it's just not happening. I don't see her beating anyone who can consistently move her like Andreescu or Swiatek. She's have to serve amazing to keep a lot of points short and not be on the run. Maybe she wins one more round and then goes out to someone like Gauff who just gets a lot of balls back.

by Anonymousreply 400September 1, 2022 3:24 PM

I laughed when Kyrgios complained about the marijuana, because I’m sure he was right. That skunky smell is all over the city now.

by Anonymousreply 401September 1, 2022 3:24 PM

ESPN needs to cut down on the on-set chit chat while matches are on progress. They could simply start an hour earlier and they’d have some time before the matches get started.

The world #1 is playing and they’re reminiscing about Forest Hills, which once hosted the tournament.

by Anonymousreply 402September 1, 2022 4:24 PM

r401, It must be said. You are practically forced to buy weed now that smoke shops outnumber Starbucks by 5 to 1, and I'm not exaggerating. It's a buyers market everywhere. Flowers, gummies, pens? What's your pleasure? What you spend extra on rent you save on weed!

by Anonymousreply 403September 1, 2022 4:42 PM

Are the Wiiliams sisters 'close'? I mean does Serena open up to Venus about everything? Or is it like most siblings in adulthood where your siblings are just about the last people you'd share your troubles with.

by Anonymousreply 404September 1, 2022 4:48 PM

I get the feeling they're close, but I have no basis to really know one way or the other.

by Anonymousreply 405September 1, 2022 4:49 PM

Is there any gay tennis player who came out of the closet?

by Anonymousreply 406September 1, 2022 4:51 PM

There are no self-identifying gay male tennis players. There are a small number of out lesbians.

by Anonymousreply 407September 1, 2022 4:54 PM

Venus is always at Serena's matches, but I mean she's travelling on the tour and away from home, so it's either the hotel room or in the stands watching her sister. I don't think they are particularly close, probably more that they just live the same lives day in and day out.

Is Brooksby MAGA?

by Anonymousreply 409September 1, 2022 6:14 PM

R409 His mom definitely is - she posts 'stand for the flag, kneel for the cross' shit on Twitter

by Anonymousreply 410September 1, 2022 6:16 PM

'Slava Ukrani' Norrie Team or Joao Wow Team?

Carlitos Team or 'Fed Or Dead' Team?

by Anonymousreply 411September 1, 2022 6:23 PM

Brooksby is lurchy and weird and gross and probably MAGA (he can take over the reins from Isner and Querry). Nice win though.

by Anonymousreply 412September 1, 2022 6:29 PM

R412, you forgot blander than a Wonder Bread Velveeta sandwich.

by Anonymousreply 413September 1, 2022 6:59 PM

Ugh, so much for Porna. Time to move on to Jack the Draper.

by Anonymousreply 414September 1, 2022 7:02 PM

Bye bye Badosa and her hot boyfriend. Martic played amazing and now the no. 4 seed is out. It's still just the second round...

by Anonymousreply 415September 1, 2022 7:04 PM

Cornet should really really do blow. With those nostrils I bet she can snort an 8-ball in a matter of seconds. She would be higher than anyone else in the room and by room I mean Artie Lange's living-room at 4 am on a Saturday night.

by Anonymousreply 419September 1, 2022 9:41 PM

Big Dicky G rolling back the years in the first set against Miaow-Miaow. Can't help but wish it was the best of 3 for the old warhorse.

by Anonymousreply 420September 1, 2022 9:59 PM

Oh Denis, ooh-bee-do, I'm in love with you

by Anonymousreply 421September 1, 2022 10:05 PM

R421, are you one of the Shapo blond leg hair lovers?

by Anonymousreply 422September 1, 2022 10:06 PM

Another reason I love Vika Azerenka is how she sometimes presents on court as if she raced to the laundry room at the last minute and pulled together an outfit from the dirty clothes hamper, flips her hair around, anchors it with a scrunchie, and proceeds to produce amazonian birdcalls with every stroke.

by Anonymousreply 423September 1, 2022 10:06 PM

Yes, R422!

He has a beautiful ass and legs.

by Anonymousreply 424September 1, 2022 10:17 PM

Yum, Shapo's blond leg hair glistening in the sun. And thank you Nike for FINALLY starting to find him shorts that fit this season.

by Anonymousreply 425September 1, 2022 10:19 PM

I was just noticing Shapo's shorts. I feel like they could be a bit shorter. Are those 7-inch or 5-inch inseam?

Grigor's Nike gear fits him perfectly. Plenty of leg.

by Anonymousreply 426September 1, 2022 10:23 PM

Venus used to live with Serena in FL. I remember watching a documentary about them and they showed them living in FL, traveling etc.

by Anonymousreply 427September 1, 2022 10:51 PM

Ohhh DL fave Fernandez playing the GOAT CoCo ln doubles!

by Anonymousreply 428September 1, 2022 10:56 PM

What is Venus wearing? She is too fat to be showing her middle...

by Anonymousreply 429September 1, 2022 11:14 PM

Good fucking lord; what is Mateck-Sands wearing? Or not wearing?!!!! Oh, I see, she's trying to show off her tatts. And tits. Yeah Bethany, the tatts give you street cred at Flushing Meadows Tennis Center.

by Anonymousreply 430September 1, 2022 11:16 PM

Bastards at ESPN switched from the Shapo match to the Serena/Venus doubles match. So much for eye candy.

R431, Shapo’s match is streaming on ESPN online. It’s not on ESPN+, I don’t think you have to pay to access it.

by Anonymousreply 434September 1, 2022 11:53 PM

Shapo won and the camera basically went up his hole as he bent over to pack up.
