I recall a study that found that only 6% of tomboys grow up to be bi or lesbian. The study is from the 90s or 2000s, though. Being nonstraight is such a huge fad among girls now, though, that I won't risk guessing what the numbers today would be. But no, tomboys are not inherently lesbians.

My mom was a tomboy and my sister is a tomboy who could easily be mistaken by some for a lesbian. Neither of them is gay at all.

The 'tomboy' thing is a good example of why it is important to differentiate sex and gender. Gender is how people present to the world.

Tomboys have always been more acceptable in our culture than guys who dress like girls are, but it's really the same thing. We are just used to one being normal and not to the other.

My mom almost always wore jeans and an oversized tee shirt. She almost never wore any makeup. She brushed her hair and eventually colored it with a wash at home but that was the extent of her 'beauty' routine. She was entirely at home in her skin.

My sister is similar, except her wardrobe is more varied. But she is most likely to wear (always) jeans and (almost always) a tee shirt or fleece sweatshirt, and (sometimes) a nice knit sweater. She wears blouses that are not very feminine at work and always pants. For her wedding, she seemed to short circuit and not know what to do. She wore a brown turtleneck sweater and a short brown suede skirt and high brown boots. It was WEIRD and she knew it and felt really self-conscious and is mortified by her wedding photo, but I suspect that happened because she couldn't imagine herself in a white wedding gown. I know her well enough to know she would feel as out of place in a gown as I would. Yet she isn't gay.

Women who are tomboys are not seem as transgender but they basically are because they feel uncomfortable and out of sorts when they have to wear girly women's clothing. And it has nothing to do with who they are sexually attracted to, just what makes them feel right about their own appearances.
