Thanks for the new thread OP!

thank you OP

btw next week we have the first USO series event in Atlanta

Bublik pulled out of his match with Rublev in Hamburg, after his Newport meltdown.

by Anonymousreply 3July 20, 2022 9:29 AM

Porna now playing hunky Tallon in the second round at Hamburg.

I think it should be an official ATP rule that Porna is always drawn to play fellow hotties.

Watching Borna get into the Quarter finals at Hamburg, dripping in sweat, with every part of his tennis outfit clinging to his body, is the most exciting thing I have witnessed all week. No wonder DL is obsessed by him

by Anonymousreply 5July 20, 2022 11:43 AM

R5 unfortunately his tennis is an ultimate bore!

by Anonymousreply 6July 20, 2022 12:24 PM

R6 Which means you won't be distracted by any exciting points as you're busy jerking off.

by Anonymousreply 11July 20, 2022 6:29 PM

The Rogers Cup was historically Venus' worst big event. I don't know why but she often struggles there

by Anonymousreply 12July 20, 2022 6:36 PM

Well at least she'll sell more seats than the newer WTA girls.

The tournament alternates cities every year, and I think she's only good when it's in Montreal (she made the final there one year, has beaten big names like Serena and Kerber) but usually bounces out in the first round when it's in Toronto. Must be a change in the conditions. It's crazy she was playing this event 27 years ago. Most players in the top 100 have not even been alive that long.

by Anonymousreply 13July 20, 2022 6:51 PM

R9 maybe he thinks that will divert the attention, Karatsev is being accused of match fixing!

by Anonymousreply 14July 21, 2022 1:03 AM

by Anonymousreply 18July 21, 2022 6:10 AM

lmao fucking dumbass who blew a great shot at 2 more slams this year If he had been in rhythm actually, he might not have choked against Nadal at RG either so who knows, not that I would have wanted it but he would have had another shot at the calendar slam

but Djokovic just thinks he knows better than all the world's leading doctors and scientists so fuck him and his puppet wife

hoping for a first time ATP slam winner at this year's USO.

This Laver Cup circle jerk (aka Federer's tax writeoff) is such a flop to watch every year. Can they re-shuffle the way teams are selected? Who have Team World got - Diego Schwartzman and Ons Jabeur?

Bernarda Pera just made the Hamburg final, her second in 2 consecutive weeks (after winning the Budapest title last week). Has won 22 sets in a row now... looking strong ahead of the US swing.

by Anonymousreply 21July 22, 2022 10:30 AM

by Anonymousreply 25July 22, 2022 4:43 PM

Some of the line judges at Hamburg are so fucking hot. The buff looking bearded one watching the side line (doubles alley) can rail me.

Over in Palermo I like this girl Diane Parry, she is losing but has a nice one handed backhand (rare on the womens tour) and a bit of a Mauresmo look with the slicked back hair.

by Anonymousreply 26July 22, 2022 4:58 PM

Laver Cup is so terrible. Last year I tried watching it and all the matches sucked

I think it's for people who aren't super tennis fans actually. I personally don't love exhibitions

by Anonymousreply 27July 22, 2022 5:25 PM

The trainer manipulating Porna's groin is fucking hot.

IT'S ALL TOO MUCH!

by Anonymousreply 28July 22, 2022 6:05 PM

I enjoyed the Laver Cup the first year, but have really skipped it since then. As posters have pointed out, the problem is the WORLD/USA team just has no firepower. I mean Isner and Kyrgios are supposed to beat all those guys? EUROPE team is stacked, majorly.

I wonder if Rublev will play? For WORLD I assume?

by Anonymousreply 29July 22, 2022 7:45 PM

In fairness, Murray and Fed are pale imitations of their former selves.

by Anonymousreply 30July 22, 2022 8:07 PM

Alcaraz gave Khachanov a beatdown today 6-0, 6-2. I hope Alcaraz doesn't lay another egg at the US Open like he's done in the Slams so far.

by Anonymousreply 31July 22, 2022 8:43 PM

Let's be fair, Alcaraz only played two GS as a top player, and he was in the second week in both, losing to Zverev and Sinner. He is doing way better than next gen players at GS at his age (or even a couple of years older)

by Anonymousreply 32July 22, 2022 8:48 PM

Alcaraz’s best surface is hard courts (at least for now).

by Anonymousreply 33July 22, 2022 8:54 PM

R32, I agree with you that Alcaraz is doing better than many Next Gen players. However, he's losing to people in Slams that he's better than and that's going to be a problem if he doesn't figure out how to stop that. I just hope he doesn't continue to come up with a clunker of a match once per Slam that sees him eliminated.

Alcaraz has the talent to win a Slam now. I'd just like to see him realize it.

by Anonymousreply 34July 22, 2022 8:58 PM

[quote]The trainer manipulating Porna's groin is fucking hot

link, pls

by Anonymousreply 35July 22, 2022 9:08 PM

Way premature to make much of his slam performances. The last two were on surfaces he’s not yet acclimated to.

by Anonymousreply 36July 22, 2022 9:08 PM

Cerundolo is kinda hot. He has great hair.

by Anonymousreply 37July 22, 2022 9:50 PM

Who is the better Argentine? Baez or Cerundolo? Who will have the better career?

by Anonymousreply 38July 22, 2022 9:51 PM

I will never forgive Alcaraz for losing to Zverev and Sinner. He's better than both, especially the latter. He never should have lost. To me Alcaraz has the talent but is not consistent enough yet. He can play a very good match then play a crap match next and lose to a badly ranked player. He will never win a slam unless he gets more consistent.

by Anonymousreply 39July 22, 2022 9:53 PM

It's weird that the other Cerundulo brother won a title first. I think Baez will be a little more consistent than both though.

One thing about Alcaraz is that when he's bad he's BAD. It's like too much energy, adrenalin, (PEDs?), whatever you want to call it. Obviously he's still so young and inexperience is a big part of it, you can see the panicked looks to his box as he starts to miss everything but still at that crazy high-octane pace and manic energy. He turns into Sabalenka. Was lucky to get through his opening round this week but I would bet on him to take this Hamburg title, and I think the US Open will be better for him than RG and Wimbledon, though the majors may still take time.

by Anonymousreply 40July 22, 2022 9:57 PM

we'll see how Alcarez feels defending his QF points at the USO from last year. It'll be the first big event where he has to defend. I do wonder why he's playing this week and next week on clay in Europe though rather than starting early in the USO series

Cerundolo's quick transition from college player (for 1 semester) to pro tour has been impressive. I do think he was motivated by his younger brother winning a title out of nowhere last year

by Anonymousreply 41July 22, 2022 10:29 PM

Alcaraz has barely played on grass so losing in the last sixteen to Sinner at Wimbledon isn’t a bad result by any means. I was disappointed in how he played against Zverev at the French, but Sasha did play a perfect match.

I also think Carlos’ best surface is hard. He’s got a good chance to nab either the US or Australian in the coming months.

by Anonymousreply 42July 22, 2022 11:55 PM

[quote] I also think Carlos’ best surface is hard.

Does he need coaching on that surface?

by Anonymousreply 43July 23, 2022 12:02 AM

I’d be surprised if Carlos doesn’t at least make the quarters.

But I won’t lose faith in him if he does. He’s not like the mentally fragile ones a couple years ahead of him.

by Anonymousreply 44July 23, 2022 1:43 AM

He is playing his first tournament as first seed and he is doing great till now.

He has great mentality, he fights till the end. The problem is that he plays too fast when he is not on. He should rely in his defense (which is great) when he is not making winners (but unforced errors).

He is way more complete than other young players, and he has an arsenal of weapons but he needs a plan B

by Anonymousreply 45July 23, 2022 10:16 AM

Musetteami or Cerundolo team?

by Anonymousreply 46July 23, 2022 2:46 PM

Fran Da Man Team!

by Anonymousreply 47July 23, 2022 2:48 PM

Cerundolo team here. And he looks like he is packing.

by Anonymousreply 48July 23, 2022 3:22 PM

Bernarda Pera won the title in Hamburg over world #2 Anett Kontaveit, 6-2 6-4. This is her 22nd consecutive set won, her second title in two weeks, and in that time she has shot from #130 in the world to #54. Impressive rise. She gave a teary-eyed tribute in her speech to Kristjian Schneider (Porna Coric's coach, and her former coach) who died of cancer at 41 this year.

by Anonymousreply 49July 23, 2022 3:27 PM

Musetti wins. We wish he'd rid himself of that mole. Pity about the tattoos as well.

by Anonymousreply 50July 23, 2022 3:37 PM

Alcaraz (Garfia) advances.

by Anonymousreply 54July 23, 2022 5:28 PM

You obviously missed my post about Federer being gay...even Martina knows this. The Tennis world knows

by Anonymousreply 55July 23, 2022 6:00 PM

Did Berrettini expand on his arm today?

Ruud vs. Berrettini will be an interesting final. I didn't expect Berrettini to come back from surgery in such fine form. He very well could have been a contender at Wimbledon if not for the covid diagnosis

Alcaraz vs. Musetti should be fun too but I think at this point Alcaraz is too consistent for the flashy Musetti

An impressive 2 weeks from Pera

by Anonymousreply 56July 23, 2022 8:28 PM

Alcaraz sucked today. Only reason he won is becuase Molcan is a mug and outmugged himself after losing that tiebreak. That first set was some of the worst tennis I have ever seen. WTA-level bad where they broke each other again and again. It was vomit inducing. Of course Molcan lost all motivation and confidence after that set, which Alcaraz took advaantage of, hence the beatdown in the second set, despite Alcaraz playing like shit.

by Anonymousreply 57July 23, 2022 8:41 PM

Oh and btw, I'm an Alcaraz fan but he made a ton of unforced errors today. That first set was painful to watch. I haven't seen him play this bad in forever.

by Anonymousreply 58July 23, 2022 8:42 PM

Why isn't Ruud playing Hamburg? Why is he playing a 250? He's ranked 5th in the world yet vultures 250s... lol. What a joke.

by Anonymousreply 59July 23, 2022 8:43 PM

R48 Cerundolo is kinda hot.

by Anonymousreply 60July 23, 2022 8:44 PM

R40 there are a lot suspicions on Alcaraz's physique/strength change in the last 7 months, some made not so subtle comments on how he looked and played in the end of 2021 and how he does these days, the transformation was unbelievable, some said it's oblivious he is getting help somewhere else (doping)!

by Anonymousreply 61July 23, 2022 9:32 PM

Oh, please. The only people sniping about Alcaraz using PEDs are a few obsessees on DL and similar forums.

His physical maturation is normal for his age and body type.

by Anonymousreply 62July 23, 2022 10:29 PM

I wanna sniff his pits.

by Anonymousreply 63July 23, 2022 10:32 PM

The Nadal Camp have been hot and heavy about Alcaraz doping since he beat Rafa in Madrid. I think it has had an effect on him.

by Anonymousreply 64July 23, 2022 10:36 PM

R64 Rafa's camp? lol, now that's funny, Rafa himself has been accused of doping by many tennis fans, the whisper never stopped. Anyway, I think there is a reason here, Spain has a history of doping in tennis, some of their coaches and players were also involved in distributing PED across Europe.

by Anonymousreply 65July 24, 2022 12:19 AM

If ageing flops like Sara Errani and Varvara Lepchenko are getting access to the juice, you'd be naive to think the young ATP players are not also finding whatever advantages. I mostly blame their teams and the systems anyway, especially for ones as young as Alcaraz. Tennis is not a clean sport. It is what it is.

by Anonymousreply 66July 24, 2022 2:12 AM

It's best to just assume that they're all doing it (which is likely at elite level anyway). It's like with cycling - everyone was doing it from the top (Lance Armstrong) to the 100th ranked cyclist because you just couldn't compete at that level otherwise. Tennis has just been better at covering it up. It would be very bad publicity for the sport, so they have a reason to.

R57 That's the thing with Alcaraz, he manage to win even when he plays really bad (in in big percentage of times)

by Anonymousreply 69July 24, 2022 10:14 AM

What’s to happen to tennis when the Saudis create their own tour? You know an asshole like Djokovic will be quick to sign on.

by Anonymousreply 70July 24, 2022 11:06 AM

Ruud beats Berrettini in 3.

by Anonymousreply 71July 24, 2022 12:41 PM

Matteo was thoroughly outplaying him until all of a sudden he couldn't put a forehand in the court and started missing his 1st serve. You know he's in trouble when that happens because those are really the only two shots he has. Still a good week for him, returning from COVID.

Casper raised his level nicely in the TB (getting more depth on the forehand) and is now 16-0 in Switzerland, defending both Geneva and Gstaad this year. He has never lost in the country. Wonder if he will sign up for Basel?

by Anonymousreply 72July 24, 2022 1:12 PM

Musetti blowing 5 championship points and then double faulting on set point to let Alcaraz back in... the Spaniard is getting cocky now but this has been a lucky escape. I think he'll take it from here.

by Anonymousreply 73July 24, 2022 3:15 PM

OMG!!!! A very lucky escape but the Spaniard has balls....

by Anonymousreply 74July 24, 2022 3:16 PM

Annoyingly Alcaraz has picked up that finger to the ear affectation from Djokovic when he thinks the audience should be applauding him. The audience knows when to applaud.

by Anonymousreply 75July 24, 2022 3:36 PM

Is Carlos capable of winning a point without vamping to his box immediately afterward? (Musetti has been looking to them a lot too). One reason the big 3 still dominate is because they're not so mentally fragile that they need to look over to their handlers for validation after every point.

by Anonymousreply 76July 24, 2022 3:57 PM

Alcaraz is such a fucking mug. I'm done being his fan.

by Anonymousreply 77July 24, 2022 4:14 PM

So glad that overrated Alcaraz lost.

Lorenzo is a hero for me.

by Anonymousreply 78July 24, 2022 4:28 PM

Lore!!! He plays a fun, flashy game and is super handsome (leave him alone Mole Patrol). I'm glad he finally wins a title and throws his name in the mix of young players to watch out for. Carlos Sabalenka is sometimes a bit too physical a player and not enough mental or strategic. Immense power and speed, but he was missing wildly and spamming too many drop shots. He's just on 'ten' all the time and needs to modulate better.

Hamburg tournament is very well put together. They even have wheelchair tennis here.

by Anonymousreply 79July 24, 2022 4:32 PM

Ruud & Berrettini have both withdrawn from Kitzbuhel and they were the [italic]top[/italic] seeds.

by Anonymousreply 80July 24, 2022 8:00 PM

Irina Camelia Begu just won Palermo, her 5th title overall, defeating Italian Lucia Bronzetti in the final: 6-2 6-2 (a bit of a wet blanket for the enthusiastic crowd). She rises back up to #33, her highest ranking in five years.

by Anonymousreply 81July 24, 2022 8:02 PM

I'm R57 I could tell Alcaraz was not playing his best this week and I'm not shocked he lost today. Still sucks, of course. I'm starting to wonder if he's overrated.

by Anonymousreply 82July 24, 2022 8:18 PM

Huge win for Ruud. He needed this. And I call BS on anyone saying it's just a 250. Tough field and Berettini is very tough.

by Anonymousreply 83July 24, 2022 8:19 PM

R83 I'm Norwegian but I'm no longer a fan of Ruud after that shitty comment he made today. I'm a leftie and vote for Labour. We have RECORD high prices on electricity, food, gas and we also have high interest rates. It's completely tone deaf that a RICH tennis player complains about high taxes in Norway. FUCK OFF, please. I cannot STAND rich assholes like him. People here in Norway suffer. More and more people cannot afford to pay their electricity bills and food prices have increased by 20 %. Yet this rich asshole complains that he has to pay taxes. Fucking hell, watch me play my tiny violin. Rich assholes like him should pay even more taxes.

by Anonymousreply 84July 24, 2022 8:26 PM

Why hasn't he moved to Monte Carlo like every other European tennis player?

by Anonymousreply 85July 24, 2022 8:35 PM

R82 He is 19, he has two masters 1000 and he is the youngest player to reach top 5 since Rafa Nadal, maybe in a future, but right now he is not overrated

by Anonymousreply 86July 24, 2022 8:39 PM

not shocking that Ruud would be a typical oblivious dumb jock who only cares about taxes

Alcaraz is only 19. I wish people here would stop acting like he's a future flop. He's already achieved so much. He's allowed to not be consistent 100% of the time. He's done more than the vast majority of the top 20 who are older than him

by Anonymousreply 87July 24, 2022 8:39 PM

If you have enough money it looks like you can get Monaco residency but don't have to actually live there -

1 - you have to keep €500,000 per applicant in a Monaco bank at all times.

2 - purchase or rent a property in Monaco with a minimum lease of 12 months (no actual requirement to live there).

by Anonymousreply 103July 25, 2022 7:37 AM

Musetti has an okay ass (see his recent shirtless training video on IG) but his party is more in the front. I can't seem to find the full image of it (you can see a small panel here on the left) but it looks like he has a nice heavy dick.

by Anonymousreply 106July 25, 2022 8:38 PM

Did anyone see the entire Alcaraz-Musetti final in Hamburg? I saw the highlights. The stats show it was a good match. Each had more winners than unforced errors. Good win for Musetti. I remember him outplaying Djokovic for two sets last year at the French Open, then Djoker took control and Musetti ultimately retired in the fifth with an injury. Musetti has talent.

I really hope Nadal does not win the US Open, but if he's not hurt I don't see who can beat him. Shit, even when he's hurt he still beats these young guns (see Taylor Fritz at Wimbledon). As Federer watches these younger guys fail over and over again, he must be annoyed that he's been out injured for so long.

by Anonymousreply 107July 25, 2022 9:25 PM

I'm not sure Fed is coming back. What's he scheduled to play?

by Anonymousreply 108July 25, 2022 9:28 PM

Fed is supposed to be playing at Laver Cup at the end of September and the Swiss Indoors at the end of October. Many are speculating that Federer may retire at the Swiss Indoors on his home turf.

by Anonymousreply 109July 25, 2022 9:32 PM

Yeah, that would make sense, R109.

by Anonymousreply 110July 25, 2022 9:41 PM

Is ATL trying to get a WTA event? They always have an exhibition. I saw the Kenin one last night and I know she's been out for a while but she looked REALLY bad. Coco was tanking to give her a few games and still beat her 6-1 6-2, the Tennis Channel commentators were so uncomfortable. She couldn't keep the ball in court. I wonder what happened to her? Was it a silent ban? Issues with her father? Another female player who had a great season and won a slam, then almost immediately flopped and disappeared.

Taylor Townhouse played the other one with Gauff and it was a lot better. Her kid is so cute.

What are your thoughts on Peter Polansky, Canadian tennis player? He showed up on Shapo's Instagram stories yesterday. Apparently Shapo and friends are in the Bahamas. According to Wikipedia:

[quote] He was Canada's top singles player from June 21, 2010, until January 17, 2011, in the ATP rankings. He was also Canada's No. 2 from August 4, 2008, until June 21, 2010, with the exception of one week. In 2018, he became the first player in the Open Era to qualify for all four Grand Slam tournaments as a lucky loser within the same calendar year.[4]

Despite his being the number one Canadian player, he never much of an impression on me. Apparently he's still active.

#736 WC Andres Martin crushes Kokkinakis 6-3 6-2 for first main draw win

by Anonymousreply 121July 27, 2022 4:05 AM

wow! he was never my favorite player (thought he was a dick actually) but in recent years I've thought he's been quite good and fun as a commentator

but so happy to report Andy Roddick is NOT a deplorable!

I just happened upon this. So nice to see a white American player not being a typical Isner

I would love to hear Roddick question Isner about his opinion of Trump now.

by Anonymousreply 123July 27, 2022 6:56 AM

R122 Roddick’s one of my favorites on Twitter. He’s self-deprecating, politically engaged, and he actually communicates with followers.

He did a mass unfollowing of most of the American male players a few years ago with a couple of exceptions (like Mardy Fish) and I always wondered if it was political.

by Anonymousreply 124July 27, 2022 9:35 AM

Coach and player Max Wenders has been banned for 12 years for match fixing. He also destroyed a bunch of evidence before the integrity unit could get to him. He's worked with Ostapenko, Kontaveit, Schuurs, and most notably he has been the coach and boyfriend of Sofia Kenin the past 1-2 years when she split from her father. Obviously he has destroyed evidence, but I wonder if this could be the cause for some of her fishy results and behaviour.

I actually wondered if Kokkinakis had taken some money for his loss, especially watching the way he played. Some of the misses looked too easy to not be intentional in some way.

by Anonymousreply 127July 27, 2022 4:12 PM

how much do coaches of top 30 players make? Obviously match fixing is done for money but I'd think someone who worked with Ostapenko and Kenin would have made a decent salary honestly?

by Anonymousreply 128July 27, 2022 7:35 PM

[quote]I'd think someone who worked with Ostapenko and Kenin would have made a decent salary honestly?

I think that Max Wenders guy was more of an assistant coach/hitting partner.

by Anonymousreply 129July 27, 2022 7:59 PM

R128, sports betting is an incredibly lucrative business. I believe that’s where the payoff money comes from, so the money on offer might be better than decent.

I'd still love to know why Anett and Tursunov split. She was doing pretty brilliantly, career high of No. 2, and then bam, sudden split which Tursunov seemed disappointed with. I think something personal may have gone down there. When Sabalenka and Tursunov split it seemed personal there too with Sabalenka writing cryptic comments as if she was in love with him or something!

by Anonymousreply 135July 28, 2022 5:31 AM

R134 It does seem as if he didn't save/invest his career earnings if he's having to do this.

by Anonymousreply 138July 28, 2022 6:04 AM

Thiem team.

by Anonymousreply 139July 28, 2022 6:06 AM

R135 Anett said the split was because he wasn't able to travel (Russian passport) and it became too difficult, with her wanting a more hands-on coach. Funny that she and Emma have now just swapped. I also think it's a little strange Emma is hiring a Russian after the LTA and AELTC banned Russians from all their tournaments. He is a great coach though. I still miss him with Sabalenka, the brilliant power tennis and the drama.

I wouldn't be surprised if Kenin had tanked some matches for $$$. Didn't she break the record for most unforced errors / per minute in her Wimbledon match last year? There was also the strange losing streak immediately after winning the AO, and getting double bageled in Rome a week before she made the Roland Garros final. Then she took basically a full year off (silent ban?). I have nothing against her, but something about her entire situation doesn't add up to me.

by Anonymousreply 140July 28, 2022 7:54 AM

R140 How come he can't travel but Russian players and other Russian coaches/staff can?

by Anonymousreply 141July 28, 2022 7:56 AM

R141 I don't know the ins and outs (I don't follow Kontaveit much, not sure how much info she gave). He couldn't be with her for the grass swing, and he wasn't allowed in Miami I think it was. Maybe she was using it as a bit of an excuse anyway for her massive slump. She did make a final last week though so perhaps it really was personal issues? OR truly just needing someone who was more hands on than he was?

by Anonymousreply 142July 28, 2022 7:59 AM

well, I guess we'll see whether he's able to be at tournaments with Emma or not.

by Anonymousreply 143July 28, 2022 8:04 AM

If Emma loses in USO first round - which seems likely - what does her ranking drop to?

by Anonymousreply 144July 28, 2022 10:04 AM

Tursunov was a hot ginge.

by Anonymousreply 145July 28, 2022 10:44 AM

Some were hoping Emma would hire Wim Fissette, Naomi’s coach until recently, who has also coached the likes of Kerber and Clijsters.

by Anonymousreply 146July 28, 2022 11:13 AM

Tursunov said this about Raducanu last November: "If now someone from her team called me and asked if I wanted to train her, I would tremble with fear, because you do not know when you will be fired".

by Anonymousreply 147July 28, 2022 11:16 AM

I wonder why Naomi dropped Wim. I wouldn't surprised to see her retire at the end of the year. She obviously doesn't want to play tennis and hasn't won a title in 19 months (fluked a Miami final where Iga bageled her). Her heart's not in it if she isn't cruising and servebotting her way to a hard court slam. Her sister already retired and said she "never enjoyed tennis". It's obvious their father tried to do a Richard Williams but they didn't have the same talent or passion.

These new American ATP players are doing the absolute most in their matches (more the celebrations, and highlight reel attempts). I thought JJ Wolf was the exception but you look at some of the up-and-comers in ATL and they are all a bit extra.

In WTA land, Kontaveit lost 6-1 6-1 to Potato (who she beat last week). Pretty bad loss for the world #2. World #1 Swiatek is currently down 4-0 to Caroline Garcia in the opening set of her home tournament.

Kasatkina's girlfriend was watching. There's something about her - quite striking compared to the photo posted here.

by Anonymousreply 183August 2, 2022 3:52 AM

What I appreciate about Murray is he has a competitive fire in his belly and is driven to push past his limits.

But in this case, while he’s trying to return to contending for slams, the reality is he struggles to compete against journeymen. It’s just not in the cards, and at a certain point you realize the wild cards could be better utilized.

by Anonymousreply 184August 2, 2022 2:30 PM

Oh, Venus returning to action this week. Will be interesting to see if she has anything left in the tank.

by Anonymousreply 185August 2, 2022 2:31 PM

Venus has already lost her first round match at the Citi Open, to Marino. Another 'comeback' star who should really give it up and let others have opportunities. I think they just don't have anything else that they think they're really good at which is why they keep trying to comeback.

by Anonymousreply 186August 2, 2022 2:36 PM

Oh, that’s bad.

And Murray lost to Ymer, who sometimes competes in challengers.

Next up I want to see if Serena has gotten into better condition.

by Anonymousreply 187August 2, 2022 2:40 PM

Its the only life they know. Admitting its time to whore themselves out as coaches is a tough one to swallow. They're desperate to hang on to sponsorships which really only last while your active, and winning. Playing brings in money even if you don't go very deep. Reputation and legacy is quickly put aside to pay the bills and shore up lifetime income.

by Anonymousreply 188August 2, 2022 3:30 PM

Not sure that's it for the top players. Murray is donating all winnings this season so his expenses are probably higher, while someone like Serena definitely doesn't need the money.

by Anonymousreply 189August 2, 2022 3:37 PM

Of course the dominating players season after season have a lot of earned income, its the perpetual also-rans that I suggest keep hanging on for whatever cash they can win without going deep.

by Anonymousreply 190August 2, 2022 3:42 PM

Yeah, but we're not really talking about them. I think that anyone with common sense gets that about them. It's the top players who puzzle a bit.

by Anonymousreply 191August 2, 2022 3:45 PM

TC is replaying the Venus match now. Lindsay said she had a fantastic first set and ran out of gas a bit in the second. Tight third set.

So nothing to be ashamed of.

The reality is you can’t step away from competitive match play for a year or so and expect to win your first match back.

Alcaraz my fave has lost two finals now😭 I wonder if he's overrated or just in a slump? He has played like shit lately, losing his head and spraying UEs everywhere. What has happened to him😭 He needs to get a grip asap. He is not winning anything with the way he's playing now.

by Anonymousreply 218August 5, 2022 6:34 PM

R218 I think since Madrid he’s been struggling a bit with expectations. It’s hard to blame him. He went from outside the top 30 to a top 10 player in a span of three or four months. Couple that with everyone and their mother telling him he’s gonna win a million majors and the fact that he’s barely 19 and a patch like this feels inevitable.

As a fan, I think losing a couple of smaller stakes finals is a good thing for him. Now he won’t go into his first major final (assuming he gets to one) having never lost a final.

by Anonymousreply 219August 5, 2022 6:49 PM

Plus the acne has to weigh on him.

by Anonymousreply 220August 5, 2022 6:52 PM

R218, Alcaraz doesn’t always manage frustration effectively. When something goes wrong during a match, it can take him some time to shake it off. Plus, and this is probably more important, players now have a much better understanding of what to expect from him. There’s no surprise factor anymore.

by Anonymousreply 221August 5, 2022 7:06 PM

R218 He played like shit but he reached the two finals and lost in three sets both. I think that's way more positive than negative, he is able to reach the final rounds even when he is far from his best

LOL. I've had bad serving days, but that's nervous breakdown territory.

by Anonymousreply 225August 5, 2022 9:30 PM

Yeah, Alcaraz has been a bit disappointing since Madrid. He blew his match at Roland Garros against Zverev and didn't play well. Zverev played a great match for him and Alcaraz still made it a tight four-setter that almost went to a fifth without at all playing as well as he could. Then he lost to Sinner at Wimbledon. Same deal--Alcaraz could not muster his best tennis. Same deal with the two recent finals he's lost in Hamburg and Umag. I hope it's not a sign of a pattern with him.

I also agree, though, he's only 19 and there are loads of expectations on him. It was just so exciting to think someone was finally going to break into the now Big 2 and win some Slams. If Nadal wins the US Open, I'm thinking of taking a break from tennis until he and Djokovic are gone, or at least aren't winning anymore.

R249 He deserves all the flack he's getting. He is obnoxious, arrogant and complete tonedeaf. Millions of people have died of covid. The vaccination requirement is there for a reason. He refuses to get vaccinated, yet expects a country to drop their rules so he can get in to play tennis. The entitlement is unreal.

by Anonymousreply 252August 6, 2022 9:45 AM

Djokovic's wife is so pathetic. She just defends whatever he does and then tries to make it seem like anyone who's criticizing or even just questioning him is a bully or the one lacking common sense. You just know Djokovic likes to use her as his voice on social media

Rogers Cup draws are out!

[bold] men [/bold]

Something very odd is that there are FIVE alternates in the men's qualies field. I've never seen that happen at a Masters' event before

In the main draw, Djokovic, Nadal, Zverev and last minute Opelka are not there. Thiem and Isner absent too

top 8 seeds have a bye

Medvedev will open against either Kyrgios or Baez

slumping Shapovalov vs. De Minaur!!!

#12 Schwartzman vs. Davidovich Fokina

#8 Hurkacz will open against either Wawrinka vs. Ruusuvuori

Bublik vs. Brooksby get your popcorn these 2 will likely annoy the shit out of each other

#9 Norrie vs. Nakashima

#11 Berrettini vs. PCB

Karatsev vs. Cressy

#5 Rublev will open against Krajinovic or Evans

#10 Fritz vs. WC Murray

#13 Cilic vs. Coric

#2 Alcaraz will open against either Paul or horribly slumping DJokovic ass kisser WC Pospisil

[bold] women's draw [/bold]

loaded field

#1 Swiatek opens against either Kudermetova or Rogers

#12 Bencic vs. Azarenka

Serena will face a qualifier

#8 slumping Muguruza opens against either Osaka or Kanepi

#3 Sakkari opens against struggling-to-win slam champs Stephens or Kenin

#14 Pliskova vs. Krejcikova

#11 Kasatkina vs. slumping Andreescu

French fight! Garcia vs. Cornet

#9 Raducanu vs. defending champ Giorgi (well it was in Montreal last year)

#2 Kontaveit opens against WC Venus or Teichmann

by Anonymousreply 254August 6, 2022 10:09 AM

Is Nadal still injured then? This is not good. Playing on hard court leading up to USO is incredibly important.

by Anonymousreply 255August 6, 2022 10:18 AM

Djokovic and his wife both have batshit crazy views which makes me wonder if one of them is leading the other.

by Anonymousreply 256August 6, 2022 10:19 AM

Poor Rafa- injured again??? Tummy muscle pull.

Where is CoCo in the draw? She hasn't won a tournament all year, yet when she beat Osaka the other day, she instantly became the favorite for the USO. Her double faults and forehand are still problematic. Daddy needs to fire himself as coach, but that greedy SOB will never get her the help she needs. He knows zip about tennis.

by Anonymousreply 257August 6, 2022 10:37 AM

Novak is definitely the controlling one in that relationship. If she wavers, he will cheat again.

by Anonymousreply 258August 6, 2022 10:45 AM

Coco could fire her daddy herself but I've heard that the pressure and dynamics of athletes who have family depending on them can be hard.

by Anonymousreply 271August 6, 2022 6:44 PM

yeah, I knew that was the case with the Osaka sisters, their parents copied the Williams and this is how it's working out.

OMFG Sloane! screaming! What a fucking shitfest she played today against Kenin! Both are in such bad form it's sad. Stephens had 6-2 5-1, then served with match points at 5-2. She then proceeds to lose the second set in a tiebreak. Then she has a 5-2 lead in the third set, served with another match point at 5-3. Totally botches it. Serving at 5-5 she goes down 15-30 but somehow holds and breaks for a 6-2 6(5)-7 7-5 win.

'I'm here to tell you that I'm evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me,' the legendary athlete has announced in the latest issue of Vogue.

'It's the hardest thing that I could ever imagine. I don't want it to be over, but at the same time I'm ready for what's next.'

Unfortunately I wasn't ready to win Wimbledon this year,' she wrote. 'And I don't know if I will be ready to win New York. But I'm going to try. And the lead-up tournaments will be fun.'

'But I'm not looking for some ceremonial, final on-court moment,' she continued. 'I'm terrible at goodbyes, the world's worst. But please know that I am more grateful for you than I can ever express in words. You have carried me to so many wins and so many trophies. I'm going to miss that version of me, that girl who played tennis. And I'm going to miss you.'

'In the last year, Alexis and I have been trying to have another child, and we recently got some information from my doctor that put my mind at ease and made me feel that whenever we're ready, we can add to our family,' Williams wrote. 'I definitely don't want to be pregnant again as an athlete. I need to be two feet into tennis or two feet out.'

'There are people who say I'm not the GOAT because I didn't pass Margaret Court's record of 24 grand slam titles, which she achieved before the 'open era' that began in 1968,' she wrote. 'I'd be lying if I said I didn't want that record. Obviously I do. But day to day, I'm really not thinking about her. If I'm in a grand slam final, then yes, I am thinking about that record. Maybe I thought about it too much, and that didn't help.

'The way I see it, I should have had 30-plus grand slams,' she continued. 'I had my chances after coming back from giving birth. I went from a C-section to a second pulmonary embolism to a grand slam final. I played while breastfeeding. I played through postpartum depression. But I didn't get there. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. I didn't show up the way I should have or could have. But I showed up 23 times, and that's fine. Actually it's extraordinary. But these days, if I have to choose between building my tennis résumé and building my family, I choose the latter.'

Tennis superstar Naomi Osaka has had another emotional exit from a tournament as she retired from her first-round match at the Canadian Open due to a back injury, raising concerns about her form heading towards the US Open.

The four-time Grand Slam champion was playing Estonia's Kaia Kanepi and was trailing 7-6, 3-0 before she pulled the plug and was reduced to tears before leaving the court.

'I felt my back from the start of the match, and despite trying to push through it, I just wasn't able to today,' Osaka said after the match.

'I'd like to pay credit to Kaia for playing well and want to wish her all the best for the rest of the tournament.'

Afterwards Osaka commented on Twitter: 'Today is just really not a good day...'

Tennis fans took to social media to voice their concern after witnessing her teary display and offer her their best wishes.

'This Naomi Osaka decline is sad to watch,' commented one Twitter user.

Another was more supportive, posting: 'Keep your head up, Tomorrow will be better.'

The early exit is more bad luck for the 24-year-old, who has struggled to find her form in recent months.

Despite making the final of the Miami Open earlier this year, she has only competed in four tournaments in 2022 - with just two wins for the Japanese national.

Osaka has recently split from longtime coach Wim Fissette and suffered with an Achilles injury. She has also been very open with her struggles with depression and anxiety in recent years.

In 2021, Osaka withdrew from the French Open after refusing to speak to media 'to protect her mental health'.

After a short break from the sport she broke down in tears at Indian Wells earlier this year when a heckler yelled 'Naomi, you suck!'

The former world No 1 has shown some encouraging signs of late, recently posting on Twitter: 'When I was playing I realised I've been letting people call me mentally weak for so long that I've forgot who I was. I lost today but I feel really confident in who I am. I feel like the pressure doesn't beat me. I am the pressure. I'm really happy with that.'

Is this where we talk about National Bank Open presented by Rogers Cup aka known as Canadian Open and Canada Masters?

Ruud team or RBA team?

Ramos-Vinolas team or Hubie team?

Evans team or Daddy Fritz team?

Kyrgios team or Minotaur/Hitlerstache team?

Norrie team or FAA team?

Cilic team or Tommy team?

Monfils team or Draper team?

Il Gingio team or PCB team?

by Anonymousreply 364August 11, 2022 5:35 AM

RBA, Hubie, Daddy, Mino, Nozzle, TomTom, JackMeOff and PCBigBoy Teams, ta for asking!

Rafa has such a great shot at retaking number one after the Open.

Rafa has 5,620 points points heading into Cincinnati/USO, and Medvedev, 6,525 points.

Medvedev will drop 2,000 from last year's U.S. Open.

So 5,620 for Nadal vs. 4,525 for Medvedev.

Medvedev needs to outperform Nadal by 1,095 points in Cincinnati and the U.S. Open to keep number one. Barring injury from Rafa, that shouldn't happen...

Last time the top three seeds lost the first round of a Masters 1000...1999.

Coco GOAT having a good run. Beaten Kasatkina, Rybakina, and She Hulk.

by Anonymousreply 369August 11, 2022 6:24 PM

This is actually quite interesting. A reminder of how different the Open era is. Serena should hold her head up high.

Daddy Team

by Anonymousreply 371August 11, 2022 9:15 PM

What is TC showing this dreary WTA match when we could be watching Daddy or FAA and Norrie?!?

Is there NO gay man high up at TC?

by Anonymousreply 372August 11, 2022 9:54 PM

FAA seems really inspired when he plays in front of a Canadian crowd. Wins with an ace, very nice.

by Anonymousreply 373August 11, 2022 10:14 PM

Felix is looking masterful in Montreal.

by Anonymousreply 374August 11, 2022 10:15 PM

Actually wasn't it four aces in a row, R373?

by Anonymousreply 375August 11, 2022 10:15 PM

Why is Nick wearing a shirt and a vest? Is it cold there?

by Anonymousreply 376August 11, 2022 10:23 PM

Nick finishes nearly all his FH around his waist. I'm guessing that's to give it more spin. Never noticed that until today.

by Anonymousreply 377August 11, 2022 10:45 PM

R375, I think so. A dialed-in Felix is a sight to behold; his shotmaking is so powerful and accurate.

by Anonymousreply 378August 11, 2022 10:47 PM

Jack Draper just took his shirt off after winning the first set against La Monf. Also a sight to behold.

by Anonymousreply 379August 11, 2022 11:48 PM

Daddy Fritz lost

by Anonymousreply 380August 12, 2022 2:14 AM

That surprised me, R380.

by Anonymousreply 381August 12, 2022 2:26 AM

Any DL boyfriends left?

by Anonymousreply 382August 12, 2022 2:52 AM

R389 bitch please like you would turn down a deep fuck from him.

by Anonymousreply 391August 12, 2022 2:21 PM

Yes, I most definitely would, R391. To each his own.

by Anonymousreply 392August 12, 2022 2:45 PM

Oh lord, here we go again. Kyrgios playing well, behaving well for two sets. Loses focus, and goes a break down to Hubie in the third and the toys come out the pram. Like clockwork.

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SUCH A MASSIVE CUNT???

by Anonymousreply 393August 12, 2022 5:52 PM

FAA: from playing like a dream against Norrie to playing like a drain against Ruud.

Bizarre.

by Anonymousreply 394August 12, 2022 7:06 PM

That's what's so frustrating about being a Felix fan. Brilliant one day and walkabout the next.

by Anonymousreply 395August 12, 2022 7:15 PM

Hubie Team

Team Hubie

Ruud Team (cuz I really wanna fuck him)

by Anonymousreply 396August 12, 2022 9:17 PM

Ruud is indeed very fuckable.

by Anonymousreply 397August 12, 2022 9:18 PM
