I hope this thread lasts. I became so confused in the past because there were so many previous threads that were pretty much numbered the same, etc that I just gave up. I think that these are very important hearings and would like to read and participate in the discussion here on DL. But, when one can't track what thread is what then... well, what's the point...

Maddow is saying AG Garland issued a memo saying no indictments until after the midterms. He issued it back i n May.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 19, 2022 3:24 AM |
That’s not exactly what the memo said R15.
It was a lot of bullshit about sensitivities and the need to appear unbiased. If they want to indict a presidential candidate, it has to go directly through Garland.

[quote] The House Committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack has abruptly decided to extend its work/existence beyond September and could keep operating beyond this fall's congressional elections, the panel's chairman says.
[quote] Representative Bennie Thompson said Monday the committee also has decided to abandon its initial plans to issue a final report in September -- and that that document will now be merely a "scaled-back" interim report.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 19, 2022 8:27 AM |
Kinzinger indicated, sometime in the past 24 hours, that the hearings WON'T be over until sometime after Thursday, that they could last for some time, and that lots of new information has been uncovered. I doubt he would just be blowing smoke about this, at this point.

As Chris Hayes put it last night, Thursday's hearing is the season finale, but not the series finale.
Of course, if the Republicans take the House this fall, as expected, the committee will meet an abrupt demise in Jan. 2023.

Bennie Thompson has tested positive.
Will they postpone or will Liz chair on Thursday?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 19, 2022 2:08 PM |
Tomorrow's witnesses.
Matthew Pottinger, who served on former President Donald Trump’s National Security Council before resigning in the immediate aftermath of January 6, 2021, will testify publicly at Thursday’s prime-time hearing held by the House select committee investigating the US Capitol attack, according to multiple sources familiar with the plans. Pottinger is slated to appear alongside former Trump White House aide Sarah Matthews. CNN previously reported that Matthews, who served as deputy press secretary in the Trump White House until resigning shortly after January 6, 2021, was expected to testify publicly.

"Many agents’ cellphone texts were permanently purged starting in mid-January 2021 and Secret Service officials said it was the result of an agencywide reset of staff telephones and replacement that it began planning months earlier.
The result is that potentially valuable evidence — the real-time communications and reactions of agents who interacted directly with Trump or helped coordinate his plans before and during Jan. 6 — is unlikely to ever be recovered."

I mean you feel confident enough to share how you would have voted so therefore you should have no hesitation in explaining your reasons for such a vote. Or, are you just a troll?
If it's the latter then you are REALLY part of the problem. It's sick motherfuckers like yourself who think this is nothing more than fun and games and get your jollies off of causing dissension and whatever else rather than taking yourself to a fucking therapist/psychiatrist where you need to be. We're talking about REAL lives here. REAL people who will be affected by these decisions. Just ask many women (and I TOTALLY blame them for this Roe fiasco) as they now face the consequences of their apathy.
So, step up R47. Tell us your point of view. You might have some that will either agree with you or at least better understand your position even if they don't agree with you.

I'm not defending the SS, because I do believe they have been corrupted. But just from a procedural point of view: Their singular purpose is guarding the President. Yes, I know they do other things, but their mission is the POTUS. So when a new POTUS takes office, they have to transition to guarding him. That's the priority. So would it be that unusual to deal with text messages and phones, etc in that context?
Yes. And here's why: The forces of evil are all over the place. Threats, plots, etc. And the SS is constantly coordinating with HLS, and other agencies to track and monitor. So archiving information including text messages has to be standard operating procedure even if it is filed away in the archives. Because in a crisis you don't know what kind of info is going to prove important. So in spite of what the SS is saying, some kind of way they have to find the text messages. It strains credulity to listen to the bullshit excuses they're inventing.

[quote][R60], I know you mean well 🙄🙄🙄 but can you imagine Dems sweeping up Republicans and using the Patriot act as the reason?
It's far past time to stop thinking in the mindset of party and "what if a Democrat did this or a Republican did that". This is simply about what is right and what is wrong. There needs to someone or a group calling this all out and calling it for what it is. This same person and/or group should be publicly questioning the patriotism of many people, questioning their competence/ability to rear children, etc. IMHO, this isn't about Donald Trump anymore. It's more about all of the people who are complicit and have facilitated this mess. Were it me (President Biden) I'd call for the resignation letters of top management for the Secret Service to be on my desk within the hour. If they don't want to resign then they would be fired and escorted out of the building. I'd start there and then work my way all through this mess. I mean... how does Sidney Powell still have a law license? Just on and on with all of this mess.

Her hearing is set for October so we'll see what happens. She could be disbarred, merely get a temporary suspension of her license, or just a formal reprimand.
Since it's TX, I'm not too hopeful for disbarment, even though that's what she deserves.

[quote] A plurality of rioters cited either their support for Trump (20.6%) or Trump’s false belief that the election had been stolen (also 20.6%) as their primary motivation for their actions that led to charges on Jan. 6.
[quote] The third most frequently listed reason defendants gave to law enforcement for entering the Capitol was their belief that they were participating in “revolution, civil war, or secession.”
[quote] About the same number of defendants in the study claimed they were at the Capitol to “peacefully protest” (7%) as those who claimed they were there because of a “general interest in violence” (6.2%).

[quote] The sizable trove of evidence released in connection with Jan. 6 criminal cases illustrates the motivations of Capitol riot defendants in other ways. During a press conference, a visibly animated Garland twice said that "no person" was above the law when pressed specifically about Trump, whom Democrats say incited the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection over his unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud in 2020.

People were on social media the last couple of days saying he already decided in May he wasn’t going to prosecute Trump no matter what, and let a bunch of potential charges expire without acting. People this morning were extremely angry about him dragging his feet. They were calling for Biden to fire him and hire Sally Yates. So he’s just trying to save his job, he’s not going to do anything. And Biden won’t fire him. Make a bad hire, live with it forever and never fix it, per Biden. Even Lincoln fired generals in the middle of the civil war.

He has a history of Christian Nationalism, antisemitism and claims to be "one of the least racist people"... Seth Abramsom says Ziegler is the protege of Peter Navarro and
[quote] I can assure you that a run for Congress by Ziegler is in the fairly near future—and that when he gets there he will make Matt Gaetz look like a member of The Squad. I’m not kidding—the generation of Trumpists coming up is even more full of brownshirts than the current one.
From CNN
[quote] In the 27-minute livestream, Ziegler used vulgar and misogynistic language to attack Cassidy Hutchinson and Alyssa Farah Griffin, two women who worked for the Trump White House but have since publicly broken from the former President and cooperated with the January 6 panel. He also accused the January 6 House select committee of being "anti-White," without any evidence. (The nine-member panel is led by Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, who is Black.)
[...]
[quote] On his Telegram channel, Ziegler continues to promote debunked conspiracy theories about the 2020 election. He falsely claimed in recent posts that "the election was stolen" and that the January 6 attack on the US Capitol "was one of the greatest orchestrated false flags in history."

The Jan. 6 committee plans to use its Thursday night hearing to call out insurrection-friendly lawmakers who cowered during the Capitol attack but have since downplayed the insurrection’s severity.
“They have plans to paint a really striking picture of how some of Trump’s greatest enablers of his coup plot were — no matter what they’re saying today — quaking in their boots and doing everything shy of crying out for their moms. If any of [these lawmakers] were capable of shame, they would be humiliated.”

I would cower if I was being tear gassed. I would also downplay the severity if I later found out that no one was anywhere near the chamber when the tear gassing was done and Capitol Police did it without rational cause.

Hopefully AOC will be there to regale the world with her harrowing tale of hiding in a toilet stall fearing she'd be raped.
She was actually in an office building down the street at the time, and there's video footage of her calmly being evacuated.
But still! Imagine how it would feel if that had happened? Look what Trump has done to America, that he would even cause a lawmaker to make something like that up. Thanks, Cheetolini.

Sounds like the appendix thread to this one, Part 5C, is lacking a zany Madlibs template about "traitor trolls!" Maybe something like this?
"The Nazi apologist on this thread claiming [refutation of crazy group delusion] probably also believes [ridiculous conspiracy theory]! What time is it in [Russian city] Boris? by Anonymous | reply 149 | July 21, 2022 5:08 PM |
The thought occurs to me that the reason rethugs constantly harass and attack Dems is fear. They’re terrified of being found out. The only way they can distract their idiot voters is by distracting them. Hence all of the show investigations, trials and threats of investigations.
They project their filth onto Dems then continually scream about it until the media reports it as fact instead of ignoring them for the histrionic jackasses they are.
They know that if the depth of their treason, lies and brainwashing is exposed to their cult, there would be hell to pay FROM THE VERY PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT THEM. Their voters would turn on them.
The ones who wake up and see will be like ex-smokers. Always ready to tell everyone about the evils of the GQP.
They can’t risk it. So they scream louder, threaten their own investigations, distract, deny and project. So pathetic.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | July 21, 2022 6:01 PM |
I believe that is true of many of them, R150. But there is also a sizable percentage of them who are motivated by something else:
Contempt.
They truly don't think the rest of us have any claim to "their" resources. Take for example someone like Bill Barr who spent his entire career manipulating the system in hopes of creating a Christian theocracy. While his actions at the moment may be explained as you do here, he is, at heart, little different than MTG who is just full of hate and indignation.

It's really telling how screwed up things are when the DHS Inspector General only decides to take control of the SS text messages situation now that it's a major scandal. The IG of the SS knew a year ago that the messages were deleted and, I assume, kept mum because a). he hoped no one would find out or ask about them or b). was privy to an attempted cover up.
There are too many far righters in federal law enforcement - time to truly drain that swamp.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | July 21, 2022 9:11 PM |
^while I think that is true, don't underestimate the amount of laziness & incompetence in the government. There have been problems with the SS for years & it's nearly impossible to fire civil servants, so I am not the least bit surprised that they were given a directive & said "fuck that!" and didn't do it, thinking there would never be any consequences

Melania Trump says she was 'unaware' of the January 6 insurrection as it was happening
(CNN)Former first lady Melania Trump said in a new interview with Fox that she was "unaware" of the ongoing riot on January 6, 2021, because she was too busy photographing a rug in the White House.
"On January 6, 2021, I was fulfilling one of my duties as First Lady of the United States of America, and accordingly, I was unaware of what was simultaneously transpiring at the US Capitol Building," she said.
Trump said it was her "duty" as first lady to archive the contents of the White House, which is not exactly true. The White House curator and the White House Historical Association are predominantly responsible for keeping a record of the contents of the official White House collection.
