[quote]Rafael Nadal and Matteo Berrettini made history this lunchtime by being allowed a 45-minute practice on the Centre Court, the first time this has ever happened on a Thursday before the tournament.
[quote]The idea is to slightly break in the surface and try to minimise the slipping and sliding often seen in the early rounds.
[quote]The decision comes after incidents in recent years which have seen players struggle to keep their footing on the slick virgin surface.
Seeing as that slick virgin surface sent Mannarino home ON HIS BIRTHDAY last year I can't believe anyone would volunteer to break in that LITERAL DEATH TRAP, let alone morphine-cankled Rafa and actual-championship-contender Berredreami ... couldn't they have roped in some Russians to ''play at Wimbledon hehehe'', or alternatively wheeled out beanpole?

Carpet has been pretty much phased out hasn't it? Due to the higher risk of injury. Supposedly it's second fastest to grass but they've really slowed down grass courts now.
Kvitova in good form - comfortably takes out Oompa Loompa 6-3 6-2 to win Eastbourne.
P.S. I know nobody wants to know this but Oompa was even wearing pink houndstooth pattern shorts under another one of those dresses. That DK One designer has to be on crack.

As long as the white shorts are see-thru i'm down with that, or should I say i'm UP with that! lol!....
we need though to get the shorts really short ala the 70's and 80's...
in recent years, I think the 2 best see thru shorts moments were lopez last year where his white shorts you could easily see what was underneath and berretini a couple of years ago where he wore powder blue bikini undies under his white shorts at the u.s. open and it was plain as day....
going way way back, perhaps the most erotic see thru moment I can ever recall (i'm old so give me a break!) was watching handsome tim mayotte in 1981 win the NCAA championship on ESPN and his white shorts not only were short short but COMPLETELY see thru as the match went on.. I'm talking not only jockstrap straps seen clearly but his ass skin as well! OUTRAGEOUSLY BLATANT AND OBSCENE it was! and oh so so damn hot!...
i'm trying to think does any of the players today were ONLY a jockstrap under their shorts and nothing else? Seems like EVERYONE wears compression shorts under their shorts...
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 25, 2022 1:35 PM |
You can buy Penko's outfits on DK One for €250.00.

I doubt there are many players who wear a jockstrap. Feliciano Lopez used to but I don't think he does anymore. Like you said, a lot of them wear compression shorts or regular underwear (briefs/boxer briefs).
Here are former players Xavier Malisse and Radek Stepanek at the Giorgi Armani Tennis Classic:

Day 1 order of play is out:
the matches that will likely be the most competitive:
Raducanu vs. Van Uytvanck
Alcaraz vs. Struff
Kontaveit vs. Pera
Sinner vs. Wawrinka as grass is the worst surface for both
Collins vs. Bouzkova
Bencic vs. Q. Wang
Dimitrov vs. Johnson
Altmaier vs. M. Ymer
Bublik vs. Fucsovics
Kecmanovic vs. Millman
Ostapenko vs. Dodin

by Anonymous | reply 82 | June 27, 2022 7:23 AM |
Apparently Ruud won a two setter against Alcaraz during training or an exhibition or something? Maybe Ruud has a better shot than I thought. Grass is his worst surface by far, but looks like his form is there if he can win against an in-form Alcaraz on this surface.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | June 27, 2022 7:25 AM |
They're reporting rain in London today. Apparently rain early in the day then sunny (though fairly cold, only 19°C). I think they'll be able to play most of the matches, but the first matches might be postponed.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | June 27, 2022 7:27 AM |
Pains me to say, but this is Novak's to lose. He plays no one until the semis. And that's probably Hurcz. Alcaraz doesn't have a grass game just yet.
(Rafa has a decent chance to reach the finals. But he has a tougher road for sure. FAA, and Berritini are much stronger on grass that Nole's opponents.)

[quote]I wonder what the British tabloids will obsess over this year
I loved Monica and when they installed that ludicrous grunt-o-meter on Centre Court, that really pissed me off. But then came the final against Graff and Monica played without making any sound at all. And got trashed in the process. It turned out later on that she had received a hand-written death threat and hadn't been able to sleep all night and showed up on Centre Court voiceless, toothless and already beaten down.

by Anonymous | reply 92 | June 27, 2022 1:54 PM |
Struff baffles me. I watch him play and he seems a top 15 material (tall, big, powerful, nice hitting and good diverse solutions) and then you check that he never won a single ATP title and never reach a GS quarterfinal.
Nole already struggling against KWON in the first round. I told you guys months ago this was going to be the year of his downfall. 35-6 is the point of no return. Australia fucked him up mentally I guess. Nadal should also have a downfall, but I think drugs and a bit of luck (Medvedev choking and Zverev/Ruud) helped him.

That cunt Djokovic infecting everyone. Someone needs to make sure he is tested.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | June 28, 2022 10:38 AM |
Yes, r143. Despite its being summer, the numbers are on the rise. It seems the main culprit is Omicron 5, which is much more infectious than previous strains of Omicron and has come along just as almost all Euro countries have abandoned mask mandates (the only exception seems to be Italy, where N95 masks are still compulsory on all forms of public transport, including cabs and ubers).
We can only hope that Djokovic accidentally swapped aerosols with Cilic during their practice session.

Mary Joe’s husband benefits from Coco becoming a bigger brand. Mary Joe is often hyping her beyond her results, and it’s just out of balance.
Lindsay, first of all, is even keeled in her commentary. But she also openly acknowledges her past (and current unofficial) involvement with Madison. I also don’t think they typically put her on Madison’s matches.
Mary Joe’s connection to Coco and other leading players has never been forthrightly addressed on air to my knowledge. I have to imagine there are many times where her broadcast partner feels uncomfortable with her open boosterism.

Serena still hit a few winners that nobody else possibly could. And she definitely brings some spectacle that is sorely needed on the womens tour today (Wimbledon won't feel they've wasted the WC). But she needs to do a bootcamp stat. Just too slow. I think since the baby she's only had one tournament where she was actually fit (AO 2020, where Osaka beat her in the SF after she took out Sabalenka and Halep in back to back three setters). Harmony Tan plays like a player from 1973, which was probably a nightmare opponent for someone who can't chase down and bend low for slices.
I actually like that Venus is pairing with Jamie Murray, hope they win the title. The girl Sloth Stephens lost to is the one who took a set off Iga at RG before she got injured. Muguruza is down a set to lesbian doubles specialist Greet Minnen, they will resume the match tonight.

I don't want to hear any of the other top 15 seeded men get praised for reaching a QF, SF or F. At this point they only deserve credit if they fucking win a slam over middle aged Nadal and Djokovic
by Anonymous | reply 248 | June 29, 2022 9:42 AM |
Serena either didn’t have her feet in position with her body or her body in position with her feet on many shots.
There were just some incredibly awkward body positions on some shots.
The fact is, if she wants to try again, she needs to play some lead-up tourneys.

Serena pulled a Clijsters here. These grannies massively overstimate themselves, thinking that because they were great champions in the past their talent will always be sufficient to shine in big tournaments when making a comeback. Then reality wakes them up.

Not a word from him in support of Ukraine or retracting his idolization of Putin, R257. And he had every opportunity to do either when voicing his opinion in the linked interview. Ironic that he's playing yet Rublev, a vocal opponent of Russia's attack on Ukraine, isn't.

Jo Konta and Caroline Wozniacki should never have been hired to do commentary. The former just giggles and trails off on her own weird tangents (let's call it baby brain), and the latter sounds like she has just triple dosed ketamine before entering the booth. They were so shady putting Pushniacki on the Jana Fett match after the poor girl gifted her a slam.

R265, i know. I do not like Caroline W either. Did she even get training before getting the job? she is horrible.

Tan, after winning her singles match against Serena, decided to withdraw from doubles. Her doubles partner is clearly pissed, writing a lengthy post on Instagram bitching about the last minute withdrawal.
It was not harmonious at all.

Caroline must have zero self awareness if she really wants to be a commentator. She is so low energy and lifeless and has nothing to add to a match. Boring and and dense sounding.

That is a pretty shitty thing to do, I don't see Harmony getting very far in singels. I like that she called her H. Tan

Most of my interest is gone with my fave DL boyfriends out in the first round. Only Ugo, Tiafoe, Mackie, Alcaraz, Ymer and Diego are left still standing behind the Mystery Date door...

Men's No. 3 seed Casper Ruud and women's no. 2 seed Kontaveit out. While that's normal for the WTA these days, it makes you wonder what the ATP will look when Djokovic/Nadal retire or wane.

I question why I'm a fan of Fokina. That point deduction on match point was embarrassing. Must be that Russian anger coming through (he's half Russian). Hopefully he'll learn from this.
by Anonymous | reply 347 | June 30, 2022 6:57 AM |
It's funny. I always found Murray annoying and dull but I've started cheering for him ever since he came back from hip surgery. I hate that he lost to Isner of all people especially because coming in to the match Murray had a perfect record. It's not like Isner is playing better these days. Murray's form is just not where it was at his peak.
Not surprised Garcia routined Raducanu. Garcia is another player who is quite talented but a headcase. She was briefly top 5 I think before things fell apart for her. She has won some grass titles including last week so she could certainly be an outside threat for the title if she maintains her current form.
Niemeier is a very broad shouldered big hitter and I'm not surprised that she took out Kontaveit. I first saw her play in the opening round of RG against Stephens whom she gave a tough match. Niemeier's game is better suited for faster surfaces
Of Thursday's matches I think Andreescu vs. Rybakina and Shapovalov vs. Nakashima have potential to be very tough matches
Sock vs. Cressy is going to be interesting too and I have no idea what to expect there except for short points.
