The Gays and Tennis Part 121: On the Road to Wimbledon

Serena and Ons team were Onsuccessful in doubles match at Eastbourne.

On the men's side at Eastbourne:

Cressy team or Draper team?

Frtiz team or Minotaur (Hitlerstache) team?

At Mallorca:

Bonzi team or Tsitsy team?

RBA team or Bellier team?

RBA all the way, and Cressy

by Anonymousreply 1June 24, 2022 5:33 AM

thanks OP for the new thread

can't wait for the Wimbledon draw

there are a bunch of dangerous unseeded players who will likely fuck up the seeded players in both men's and women's

by Anonymousreply 4June 24, 2022 8:19 AM

RBA team.

I have a feeling that Serena would go deeper than Ons in Wimbledon.

by Anonymousreply 5June 24, 2022 8:45 AM

It's normally Kanepi but this time Serena has to be the unseeded player nobody wants to draw in the first round.

Wimbledon @Wimbledon Gentlemen's Singles - Projected Quarter-finals

Djokovic vs Alcaraz

Ruud vs Hurkacz

Berrettini vs Tsitsipas

Auger-Aliassime vs Nadal

by Anonymousreply 7June 24, 2022 9:37 AM

Serena Williams will face Harmony Tan in the Wimbledon first round

by Anonymousreply 8June 24, 2022 9:52 AM

Another easy draw for Nadal

by Anonymousreply 9June 24, 2022 10:36 AM

Sorry but Felix on grass is way more dangerous than Alcaraz

by Anonymousreply 10June 24, 2022 10:42 AM

R10 I know but just see Felix hard path QF and Nadal easy path to QF

FAA would either be tired or already before QF

[quote]Rafael Nadal and Matteo Berrettini made history this lunchtime by being allowed a 45-minute practice on the Centre Court, the first time this has ever happened on a Thursday before the tournament.

[quote]The idea is to slightly break in the surface and try to minimise the slipping and sliding often seen in the early rounds.

[quote]The decision comes after incidents in recent years which have seen players struggle to keep their footing on the slick virgin surface.

Seeing as that slick virgin surface sent Mannarino home ON HIS BIRTHDAY last year I can't believe anyone would volunteer to break in that LITERAL DEATH TRAP, let alone morphine-cankled Rafa and actual-championship-contender Berredreami ... couldn't they have roped in some Russians to ''play at Wimbledon hehehe'', or alternatively wheeled out beanpole?

by Anonymousreply 17June 24, 2022 2:06 PM

Berrettini has a cakewalk draw to the semis if not the final itself. There's chances he wins the whole thing. Lots of seeded clay courts specialist who will succumb early and no Medvedev.

by Anonymousreply 18June 24, 2022 2:16 PM

Nadal is gonna win it!

He has all the luck!

Carpet has been pretty much phased out hasn't it? Due to the higher risk of injury. Supposedly it's second fastest to grass but they've really slowed down grass courts now.

Kvitova in good form - comfortably takes out Oompa Loompa 6-3 6-2 to win Eastbourne.

P.S. I know nobody wants to know this but Oompa was even wearing pink houndstooth pattern shorts under another one of those dresses. That DK One designer has to be on crack.

As long as the white shorts are see-thru i'm down with that, or should I say i'm UP with that! lol!....

we need though to get the shorts really short ala the 70's and 80's...

in recent years, I think the 2 best see thru shorts moments were lopez last year where his white shorts you could easily see what was underneath and berretini a couple of years ago where he wore powder blue bikini undies under his white shorts at the u.s. open and it was plain as day....

going way way back, perhaps the most erotic see thru moment I can ever recall (i'm old so give me a break!) was watching handsome tim mayotte in 1981 win the NCAA championship on ESPN and his white shorts not only were short short but COMPLETELY see thru as the match went on.. I'm talking not only jockstrap straps seen clearly but his ass skin as well! OUTRAGEOUSLY BLATANT AND OBSCENE it was! and oh so so damn hot!...

i'm trying to think does any of the players today were ONLY a jockstrap under their shorts and nothing else? Seems like EVERYONE wears compression shorts under their shorts...

by Anonymousreply 43June 25, 2022 1:35 PM

You can buy Penko's outfits on DK One for €250.00.

I doubt there are many players who wear a jockstrap. Feliciano Lopez used to but I don't think he does anymore. Like you said, a lot of them wear compression shorts or regular underwear (briefs/boxer briefs).

Here are former players Xavier Malisse and Radek Stepanek at the Giorgi Armani Tennis Classic:

R45 Coco is one of the biggest surprises ever on a personal level.

One could think someone who was so hyped so young would be a petulant and arrogant girl but she seems really inteligent and nice

by Anonymousreply 54June 25, 2022 7:06 PM

exactly. She doesn't deserve any of the hate she gets. She is very talented and it's not her fault that she is highly hyped. She's not a diva or rude to anyone and is outspoken on many issues. I was happy to see her reach the RG final.

by Anonymousreply 55June 25, 2022 7:29 PM

Day 1 order of play is out:

the matches that will likely be the most competitive:

Raducanu vs. Van Uytvanck

Alcaraz vs. Struff

Kontaveit vs. Pera

Sinner vs. Wawrinka as grass is the worst surface for both

Collins vs. Bouzkova

Bencic vs. Q. Wang

Dimitrov vs. Johnson

Altmaier vs. M. Ymer

Bublik vs. Fucsovics

Kecmanovic vs. Millman

Ostapenko vs. Dodin

Basilashvili vs. Rosol

Fognini vs Griekspoor

Goffin vs. Albot

by Anonymousreply 56June 25, 2022 7:36 PM

The original Coco (Vandeweghe) will enter Wimbledon as a lucky loser because Madison Keys has withdrawn (abdominal injury)

Borna Coric also pulled out

by Anonymousreply 57June 25, 2022 7:36 PM

Keys is always a threat on grass so the other women have to be happy she's out. Sad for Madison

Really disappointed in Coric's comeback so far. I know it's common for injured players to struggle as they return to tour but damn. So hot I miss seeing him in the top 20

by Anonymousreply 58June 25, 2022 7:38 PM

Should be interesting today! Alcaraz, Ruud and Murray are all scheduled to play. Novaxx too.

by Anonymousreply 82June 27, 2022 7:23 AM

Apparently Ruud won a two setter against Alcaraz during training or an exhibition or something? Maybe Ruud has a better shot than I thought. Grass is his worst surface by far, but looks like his form is there if he can win against an in-form Alcaraz on this surface.

by Anonymousreply 83June 27, 2022 7:25 AM

They're reporting rain in London today. Apparently rain early in the day then sunny (though fairly cold, only 19°C). I think they'll be able to play most of the matches, but the first matches might be postponed.

by Anonymousreply 84June 27, 2022 7:27 AM

Pains me to say, but this is Novak's to lose. He plays no one until the semis. And that's probably Hurcz. Alcaraz doesn't have a grass game just yet.

(Rafa has a decent chance to reach the finals. But he has a tougher road for sure. FAA, and Berritini are much stronger on grass that Nole's opponents.)

by Anonymousreply 85June 27, 2022 7:54 AM

[quote]I wonder what the British tabloids will obsess over this year

I loved Monica and when they installed that ludicrous grunt-o-meter on Centre Court, that really pissed me off. But then came the final against Graff and Monica played without making any sound at all. And got trashed in the process. It turned out later on that she had received a hand-written death threat and hadn't been able to sleep all night and showed up on Centre Court voiceless, toothless and already beaten down.

It's great that so many more tennis matches are broadcast these days, but the patchwork of who's broadcasting what when for the USA market is insane. TennisTV, Tennis Channel, Tennis Channel Plus, ESPN, ESPN+, ESPN3, Fox Sports, networks, some obscure cabel channel? I'm exhausted before I can even find the match.

by Anonymousreply 91June 27, 2022 1:40 PM

Kwon takes a won the 2nd set against novak. it's raining and chilly 19 C about 66 F

by Anonymousreply 92June 27, 2022 1:54 PM

Struff baffles me. I watch him play and he seems a top 15 material (tall, big, powerful, nice hitting and good diverse solutions) and then you check that he never won a single ATP title and never reach a GS quarterfinal.

Nole already struggling against KWON in the first round. I told you guys months ago this was going to be the year of his downfall. 35-6 is the point of no return. Australia fucked him up mentally I guess. Nadal should also have a downfall, but I think drugs and a bit of luck (Medvedev choking and Zverev/Ruud) helped him.

by Anonymousreply 93June 27, 2022 2:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 132June 28, 2022 6:15 AM

wait what? Wimbledon allowed Mladenovic to wear a crop top? I remember over a decade ago when they made Haas change out of his sleeveless into a short sleeve. They did allow Nadal a couple years after that to wear the same thing though

I'm glad they're being more accommodating but I wonder is there a new person in charge?

Is England facing a new wave of Covid infections? Are more players expected to withdraw in the coming days?

by Anonymousreply 143June 28, 2022 10:37 AM

That cunt Djokovic infecting everyone. Someone needs to make sure he is tested.

by Anonymousreply 144June 28, 2022 10:38 AM

Yes, r143. Despite its being summer, the numbers are on the rise. It seems the main culprit is Omicron 5, which is much more infectious than previous strains of Omicron and has come along just as almost all Euro countries have abandoned mask mandates (the only exception seems to be Italy, where N95 masks are still compulsory on all forms of public transport, including cabs and ubers).

We can only hope that Djokovic accidentally swapped aerosols with Cilic during their practice session.

by Anonymousreply 145June 28, 2022 10:46 AM

Would love for Djocovid to get all the way to the final only to be kicked out because he contracts it, giving yet another win to Nadal. But honestly, he won’t get that far. He’s done.

Kyrgios down a set against British teen while acting like a little bitch. It's obvious he relies on talent without practice. He has no muscle memory for his shots. The second he gets distracted his game disappears as if he can only function "in the zone".

Two questions for you, fine Tennis Gays:

1. Is that Shakira I spy sitting in Nadal's box, front row? 2. Who is the hot, hairy, Latino daddy in black in Cerundolo's box?

by Anonymousreply 188June 28, 2022 4:30 PM

Mary Joe’s husband benefits from Coco becoming a bigger brand. Mary Joe is often hyping her beyond her results, and it’s just out of balance.

Lindsay, first of all, is even keeled in her commentary. But she also openly acknowledges her past (and current unofficial) involvement with Madison. I also don’t think they typically put her on Madison’s matches.

Mary Joe’s connection to Coco and other leading players has never been forthrightly addressed on air to my knowledge. I have to imagine there are many times where her broadcast partner feels uncomfortable with her open boosterism.

by Anonymousreply 189June 28, 2022 4:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 203June 28, 2022 6:43 PM

I actually like coco a lot. Her game is coming along, and she seems mature beyond her years in many ways, as demonstrated by her statements about Roe v Wade, Don’t Say Go, etc.

But the way the ESPN has slobbered over her for years, led by Mary Jo, has led to the backlash against her.

by Anonymousreply 224June 28, 2022 9:58 PM

Serena, honey, retire. It's not going to happen for you, that ship has sailed.

by Anonymousreply 226June 28, 2022 10:03 PM

Serena needs to commit to a few months of boot camp like training. She is well past the time she can just play her way into a tournament.

by Anonymousreply 227June 28, 2022 10:18 PM

Serena had no business playing! You don't enter wimbledon or any major tournament in a year's time without any match play... She should have played doubles if she wanted to make a "return" to wimbledon...

This is simply embarrassing! Harmony tan, is literally the level of a college player, although she did play smart junkballing serena and dropshotting her constantly! I haven't seen that much hacking since bobby riggs defeated margaret court (which was even MORE embarrassing!)... This match tarnishes Serena's record....

If he's not that sick he should've soldiered through, Novacc and Cankle must have it as we speak and are playing, and winning, regardless.

In fact, THEY probably infected Matteo and Marin, and not the other way round, as as some of you are assuming...

Serena still hit a few winners that nobody else possibly could. And she definitely brings some spectacle that is sorely needed on the womens tour today (Wimbledon won't feel they've wasted the WC). But she needs to do a bootcamp stat. Just too slow. I think since the baby she's only had one tournament where she was actually fit (AO 2020, where Osaka beat her in the SF after she took out Sabalenka and Halep in back to back three setters). Harmony Tan plays like a player from 1973, which was probably a nightmare opponent for someone who can't chase down and bend low for slices.

I actually like that Venus is pairing with Jamie Murray, hope they win the title. The girl Sloth Stephens lost to is the one who took a set off Iga at RG before she got injured. Muguruza is down a set to lesbian doubles specialist Greet Minnen, they will resume the match tonight.

by Anonymousreply 247June 29, 2022 9:17 AM

ugh not a good start to the tournament for most of the players I root for

cannot believe title contender Berrettini is out with covid. Awful

I definitely won't watch the men's final if it's another Nadal vs. Djokovic affair

I don't want to hear any of the other top 15 seeded men get praised for reaching a QF, SF or F. At this point they only deserve credit if they fucking win a slam over middle aged Nadal and Djokovic

by Anonymousreply 248June 29, 2022 9:42 AM

Serena either didn’t have her feet in position with her body or her body in position with her feet on many shots.

There were just some incredibly awkward body positions on some shots.

The fact is, if she wants to try again, she needs to play some lead-up tourneys.

Jo Konta and Caroline Wozniacki should never have been hired to do commentary. The former just giggles and trails off on her own weird tangents (let's call it baby brain), and the latter sounds like she has just triple dosed ketamine before entering the booth. They were so shady putting Pushniacki on the Jana Fett match after the poor girl gifted her a slam.

by Anonymousreply 265June 29, 2022 2:15 PM

R265, i know. I do not like Caroline W either. Did she even get training before getting the job? she is horrible.

Like, um, what is that? I hope, um, like people don’t, you know, eat it. That would be, like, cruel.

by Anonymousreply 267June 29, 2022 2:20 PM

Tan, after winning her singles match against Serena, decided to withdraw from doubles. Her doubles partner is clearly pissed, writing a lengthy post on Instagram bitching about the last minute withdrawal.

It was not harmonious at all.

by Anonymousreply 268June 29, 2022 2:21 PM

Ruud is out.

by Anonymousreply 269June 29, 2022 2:28 PM

The UGOAT manages to string together 2 consecutive wins!!!

YOU MAY AS WELL THROW IN THE TOWEL NOW, NOVAXXX!!!

by Anonymousreply 270June 29, 2022 2:29 PM

Caroline must have zero self awareness if she really wants to be a commentator. She is so low energy and lifeless and has nothing to add to a match. Boring and and dense sounding.

That is a pretty shitty thing to do, I don't see Harmony getting very far in singels. I like that she called her H. Tan

Most of my interest is gone with my fave DL boyfriends out in the first round. Only Ugo, Tiafoe, Mackie, Alcaraz, Ymer and Diego are left still standing behind the Mystery Date door...

by Anonymousreply 274June 29, 2022 2:47 PM

Men's No. 3 seed Casper Ruud and women's no. 2 seed Kontaveit out. While that's normal for the WTA these days, it makes you wonder what the ATP will look when Djokovic/Nadal retire or wane.

by Anonymousreply 275June 29, 2022 2:51 PM

Okay, place your bets: will the men or women have more seeds left in the draw in the round of 16?

by Anonymousreply 276June 29, 2022 2:54 PM

R274 we still have Tommy Paul

by Anonymousreply 277June 29, 2022 3:01 PM

My eyes are receving a blessing with Basilashvili's perfectly visible white slips and Haly's hot dad bod. Both handsome face.

Raducanu is wearing huge pearl earrings (£7,500), a single pearl necklace (£4,000) and a Tiffany bangle (£19,000) - they are a sponsor. I can't say I like the look to be honest.

by Anonymousreply 279June 29, 2022 3:07 PM

Didn’t Sir Andy once say that Garcia could be the future WTA No. 1?

OH GOD, not Alexandra stevenson as a "commentator" yet again...

ultimate nepotism being hired for ANYTHING to do with tennis because of her father and oh yeah, she reached the wimbledon semifinal (and nothing else) 1 time nearly a quarter of a century ago!....not only is she not qualified or experienced, she's a moron who knows nothing!...

espn tennis and tennis channel seem to be mostly a "clique" mindset and who you know for hires....

Thanks r290! Much appreciated.

by Anonymousreply 292June 29, 2022 4:03 PM

Update about Harmony Tan's doubles partner - she liked a comment on Instagram saying "i hope Tan loses next match".

by Anonymousreply 293June 29, 2022 4:20 PM

I don’t think steveson’s dad has anything to do with her hire, as last I learn they had no relationship.

I do think they (rightly) feel pressure to diversify their on-air team.

by Anonymousreply 294June 29, 2022 4:29 PM

I question why I'm a fan of Fokina. That point deduction on match point was embarrassing. Must be that Russian anger coming through (he's half Russian). Hopefully he'll learn from this.

by Anonymousreply 347June 30, 2022 6:57 AM

It's funny. I always found Murray annoying and dull but I've started cheering for him ever since he came back from hip surgery. I hate that he lost to Isner of all people especially because coming in to the match Murray had a perfect record. It's not like Isner is playing better these days. Murray's form is just not where it was at his peak.

Not surprised Garcia routined Raducanu. Garcia is another player who is quite talented but a headcase. She was briefly top 5 I think before things fell apart for her. She has won some grass titles including last week so she could certainly be an outside threat for the title if she maintains her current form.

Niemeier is a very broad shouldered big hitter and I'm not surprised that she took out Kontaveit. I first saw her play in the opening round of RG against Stephens whom she gave a tough match. Niemeier's game is better suited for faster surfaces

Of Thursday's matches I think Andreescu vs. Rybakina and Shapovalov vs. Nakashima have potential to be very tough matches

Sock vs. Cressy is going to be interesting too and I have no idea what to expect there except for short points.

by Anonymousreply 348June 30, 2022 7:29 AM

Yesterday was a tough day for me. Both Fokina and Ruud lost😭 Thank god Nadal and Alcaraz are still in it.

by Anonymousreply 349June 30, 2022 7:34 AM

Harmony Tan did the right thing. She is not a moron like Tommy Paul or Jack Sock.

I can understand Tamara's disappointment but I don't Harmony give a flying beep about it.

Harmony knows she has to put her own health and goals first.
