I know someone this happened to. It was initially misdiagnosed, so they missed that 3-day treatment window. The nerve damage was severe. He recovered his balance somewhat but he has permanent hearing loss. While the facial paralysis improved a bit, his appearance has been noticeably and permanently altered.

I had a fairly mild case of it but it was still some of the worst pain I've ever experienced. I was lucky that I had very minor facial paralysis. But the pain near my ears and on my neck and scalp was horrendous. I took acyclovir and gabapentin right away.
