I have to agree with r318. Everyone agrees that the officers on the Californian (and some of the crew) saw a ship approach from the east, come to a stop, fire off rockets, even signal with their Morse lamp (they claimed they weren't sure if the other ship was using the lamp or of a mast light was blinking, but one Californian officer did try to signal back), and then the other ship disappeared. Any responsible captain, when notified of what was happening, would've immediately awakened the radio operator to find out if there was a ship in distress in the area.

Whether the Californian could've made it to the Titanic in time to save more lives is debatable: firing up the engines and then threading their way through the ice to the Titanic, they likely would've arrived shortly after the ship had sunk and probably rescued only a few more people than actually did survive. But that's not the point -- at least they would've tried, which is more noble than just sitting there ignoring a calamity on the horizon.

Susan Reinert was last seen driving her car out into the night; her children were presumably with her. They disappeared. They were never seen or heard from again. They were eventually declared dead, but their bodies were never found. Supposedly Jay Smith did the killings and supposedly he was a genius at making bodies disappear. His daughter and son in law also disappeared, never to be seen again. Bradfield died in prison, but Smith, who got the death penalty, got sprung from prison after a few years on a legal technicality.

I always wondered what happened to those children. I wonder what Smith did to them. It's horrible to think about. But Joseph Wambaugh tried to put it to rest by saying this towards the end of "Echoes In The Darkness:

Reading about the Manson case recently- some of the unknowns are chilling.

There are theories that the Sharon Tate house was under surveillance by the government. A friend of Sharon Tate's named Shahrokh Hatami claimed that Reeve Whitson, a shadowy CIA figure called him with the news of Sharon's murder a full 90 minutes before the police even arrived at the house on Cielo. Whitson later helped investigate the murders for Sharon Tate's father.

A pair of glasses were found at the scene that were never connected to anyone in the house, or and of the killers. It is speculated they belonged to Whitson, who visited the house sometime between when the killers left, and the maid showed up.
