In old age, Stephen Fry (among several others) that came upon this need to sort of redeem himself - so, not a completely selfless act but he as a few rare others that fit into this category of becoming self aware, not using the mental illnesses or other problems, as an excuse or defense but a contributing factor... of course, it's a double sided blade... he, himself, with his inner struggles and turmoil, personality in general, like many others, produce a negative energy and yet go through these periodic journeys for perspective and having made much of these side projects freely available to the public... using his celebrity for a good that doesn't come off as insincere... like on lgbt issues or mental health. There's quite a few celeb nutcases that arrive at this point without starting a cult or oprah/goop'ify it.

There's this really nice piece on Bob Mackie and even though he is not very insightful and in general a kind of superficial guy - his offhand remarks about Carol Burnett speak volumes. How much she trusted him and how well they worked together. A mutual appreciation. He says that he never made any fashion statements with Carol but that she opened all the other doors to him, and that she was always least concerned with her image, outside of characters. She trusted his taste, ability and expertise. The extremely hard work he did on her show made him a fashion star. She gave him practically free license. He was experimental and she was trusting. Something he wouldn't experience with many of the DIVAS he dressed for the rest of his career.
It's a nice piece to watch, if you've got 20 minutes.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | May 9, 2022 3:31 AM |
r120 a brief flash in the pan. . . she was part of The Mamas and The Papas and the nicest one out of the bunch... she would also go on to have her own variety show. Still, people were drawn to her despite her array of problems and her appearance. . . and not just for pity.
r114 There are many shady cunts that horrible human beings and yet we honor them as geniuses. Which is the nature of celebrity. Even if we were discussing scientists or grand historical figures that left a mark on the world, we'd find a lot of broken, nasty or just dysfunctional people... yet they radiate that cult of personality because we don't really know them. We build up our own perspectives based on what we've observed.
Music is a good example of this..because so many of great good-energy music artists are so personally flawed. . . the same goes to most forms of entertainment and creative arts that we attach to expressions and communication of emotion, the mind, the ego, the soul.. of inner beauty but this, perhaps more than anywhere else, we recognize the links between madness/ego and genius/creativity.
this thread moves slower than the other becuase many here are cynics atg heart.

Dolly Parton and Celine Dion own this thread and are basically subleasing it to all of you who have yet to mention them.
When Celine Dion downright came close to having a nervous breakdown on Larry King Live in regard to Hurricane Katrina she had my heart. She can do no wrong.
Dolly Parton seems like she could just step out of her Dolly Parton drag and just plainly make a new pal anywhere without anyone guessing it's her. She could probably chat up anyone.
Jennifer Coolidge seems like a dear. She's in on her own joke a bit but sincerely so. I dig her and her big ole figure.

We could look in hindsight and there's many would remove from the list but I think it might be worth it to explore those that did "SEEM" like genuinely good-energy people. . . we generally have two primary draws to cults either the apocalyptic conspiracy theory types or the over the top utopia of the tomorrow. The former capitalizes on "negative" energy and the latter "positive" often in an all or nothing approach.
The Peoples Temple (Jim Jones) is a good example.
Socially and politically progressive, communal oriented, argued to what they believed was the best path forward for humanity and against the worst, perhaps more polarized than modern day, as theyt engaged in group suciide (consent issues aside) as protest. Though, of course, a myriad of problems behind the scenes, we'd later discover... but prior they maintained a good reputation.
