Names And Words From Another Language That Are Offensive In Yours

In Spanish, the diminutive of the name Enrique is "Kike" (pronounced "Kee-kay). In English, kike is a contemptuous term for a Jewish person.

What are the ones you know of?

by Anonymousreply 80May 25, 2022 5:40 PM

Ni-ga and ne-ga mean "you" and "I' in Korean but Americans get offended, so it's censored. Koreans have been attacked by Americans for speaking their own language in Korea, and Black Twitter has suggested they change their words for "you" and "I" to comply with Americans sensitivities.

In English, we have "niggardly," which means "cheap" (rather than what some think it means).

by Anonymousreply 3May 6, 2022 3:56 PM

^Not too bright.

by Anonymousreply 4May 6, 2022 3:57 PM

No, R4, you are the one who is not too bright. Fascinating discussion on the matter here. I still wouldn't use the word though.

by Anonymousreply 6May 6, 2022 4:03 PM

It's "ma-TSHOO-ta" but nonetheless had to change it Panasonic.

by Anonymousreply 8May 6, 2022 4:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 14May 6, 2022 5:26 PM

[quote]Péter in French means "to far.'

WTF does “to far” mean in English?

by Anonymousreply 16May 6, 2022 5:28 PM

Fart — means “speed” in Swedish

Bích — popular girl’s name in Vietnamese

by Anonymousreply 20May 6, 2022 5:38 PM

R18, OP didn't say words that sound the same. People don't text, write, read?

by Anonymousreply 21May 6, 2022 5:38 PM

Go straight to hell, r18! An English speaker would pronounce it in the offensive way, unless they already knew Spanish as a second language.

I always wondered what French people think about Sean Connery (since connerie is an offensive word).

by Anonymousreply 23May 6, 2022 5:42 PM

Ok then r5 then I dare your PUNK ASS to use the word in the presence of black people and then tell them "no it's perfectly ok, go to this link to see why, and quit being so sensitive". If you survive, then come back and report to us

There’s a product in Romania called taramasalada, which is a spread made with the salted and cured roe of carp…essentially caviar on a budget. It’s actually quite good, but since the word for carp in Romanian is crap, you know who speaks English in the grocery store by the smile on their face.

OP, I've always seen it as Kique or Quique.

by Anonymousreply 34May 7, 2022 1:46 AM

Please. Kee-Kay doesn’t evoke the word “kike” at all.

by Anonymousreply 35May 7, 2022 1:49 AM

There's a Korean American woman at work named Tae (tay), but whenever I read her name, I chuckle. Tae (tah-eh) is Tagalog for poop, shit.

It's a staple in the mezze at just about any Greek restaurant.

I have no doubt it is popular in Romania though, the two countries are not far away and both were ruled by the Ottomans for centuries.

Speaking of niggardly--which is not on topic as it is an English word that sounds offensive in English-- there was a minor dust-up when the NYT Spelling Bee app did not allow the word "chink" last week -- A chink in the wall or a chink in the armor are common uses

by Anonymousreply 40May 7, 2022 2:23 AM

Nimrod and Moron are fairly common Israeli names, thought not usually given by families who know English

by Anonymousreply 48May 7, 2022 2:37 AM

Great thread. I just came here to learn some new one.

Isn't fag, french for cigarette. That is offensive, but funny.

by Anonymousreply 49May 7, 2022 2:45 AM

It's English slang for cigarette, R49.

by Anonymousreply 50May 7, 2022 2:49 AM

How about douche. In French it means shower, as in to take a shower. In English it can be either a feminine hygiene item or an insult "That guy's a total douche."

by Anonymousreply 51May 7, 2022 2:53 AM

"Excitado" means aroused in Spanish, so to Spanish speakers if you say "I'm excited" it sounds like you're announcing you have an erection.

Wir suchen dich- we're looking for you.

Ich mag dich- I like you.

The English name "Gary" in Japanese can be pronounced "geri," which means diarrhea.

The English name "Ben" in Japanese has a lot of vulgar connotations, and sounds like a part of the word for piss.

The English name "Ana" in Japanese sounds like the word "ana," or "hole."

There's a whole lot of them that don't sound nice. Those are the only ones I can think of right now.

by Anonymousreply 56May 7, 2022 3:00 AM

Umfärt means to take a drive around a place in German.

by Anonymousreply 57May 7, 2022 3:07 AM

Not quite on topic but related: "Nigger Brown" used to be the name of a popular shade of brown. Obviously it's rarely used now but I've read there are a few places in Asia where you will still run across it.

by Anonymousreply 58May 7, 2022 3:51 AM

When John F. Kennedy met Joseph Luns, the former Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kennedy asked for his hobbies and he answered: "I fok horses.” Kennedy, struck with surprise, responded: "Pardon?", Luns replied: "Ja, paarden!".

'Fokken' means 'to breed', and 'horses' is 'paarden' in Dutch.

by Anonymousreply 59May 7, 2022 3:55 AM

“Suki” means “bitches” in Russian. I wonder how they subtitled “True Blood.”

by Anonymousreply 60May 7, 2022 3:56 AM

Molestar in Spanish means to annoy, disturb, or to bother someone (¡Deja de molestarme! = Stop bothering me!). But in English, to molest someone means something else entirely.

by Anonymousreply 61May 7, 2022 4:16 AM

We had a nearly identical thread a couple of years ago and I'm copying below what I posted there.

I don't know whether this is true but I've read it a few times over the years.

Mara Maru is a noirish early '50s action adventure film starring Errol Flynn. He plays a salvage diver after WWII in Manila and gets involved with sunken treasure, murder and what not. The Mara Maru of the title is his boat, which is featured prominently in the action.

At any rate, Warner Bros, was horrified to find out after its release that in some Asian languages Mara Maru translates as Shit Boat. But being to cheap to recall the film from the affected regions and fix it right, Warners instead just issued new posters with a new title and then paid people to unspool the prints and manually scratch out the boat's name wherever it appeared.

by Anonymousreply 64May 7, 2022 4:40 AM

Almost the first word you see when you land in Germany is "Ausfahrt" (The Aus rhymes with house and fahrt sounds like fart). So it sounds a bit like out fart, but it means "Exit".

by Anonymousreply 65May 7, 2022 5:04 AM

[quote] “Seal” in French sounds a bit like “fuck.”

“Pédé comme un phoque” is how the French say “gay as a goose.”

The Polish word “ błąd,” which means “mistake,” looks (but doesn’t sound) exactly like the Russian word “блядь,” which means “whore.”

Regarding the Dutch ‘kijk’ (kike - look in English) it’s super awkward to hear kids in the Anne Frank museum urging their parents to look at everything. ‘Kijk mama, kijk! Papa, kijk!’

“Mist” means “manure” in German. My mom found this out the hard way when she attempted to admire the “Mist” on a river.

There is a town in Austria called Fucking. Last I heard, they were considering changing the name because of the worldwide mockery.

by Anonymousreply 74May 7, 2022 7:30 PM

Do a google image search and you will find dozens of images of signs for the town "Fucking." Last year, tired of the notoriety, the town finally changed its name to "Fugging."

In the UK a fart is sometimes referred to as a trump.

by Anonymousreply 79May 25, 2022 5:35 PM

In the UK, "cunt" is a mild, jocular slur. It's sort of like "dude" or "mister" or "my man."

In the US, it's .... a lot different.
