Wynonna looks prone to occasional rage and I bet she tortured Naomi by sometimes threatening with or actually sitting on her.

by Anonymousreply 22May 5, 2022 3:10 AM

What are the chances Ashley goes on tour with Wy?

by Anonymousreply 23May 5, 2022 3:55 AM

@23 I suspect that will happen.

This was a terrible tragedy. But, let’s face it, we’re dealing with the Judds. They never fail to leverage drama/tragedy for public attention. And I’m here for it!

I went to a Wynonna concert at a small casino venue a few years ago. She barely phoned in a performance and clearly was doing it for a paycheck. Strongly suspect that she and Ashley need $$ (Ashley hasn’t worked in years, right?)

My very cynical take: the reason they’re being so circumspect about cause of Naomi’s death is to do a big reveal (on Oprah special?) to position themselves for career boost.

Wynonna married a child molester; was accused of sexual harassment herself; has a kid in jail; planted a bugging device on her sister’s car (after Ashley tried to get custody of Wy’s kid); had a stay in the looney bin; had an exceptionally stormy—and public—relationship with her mother and sister; didn’t invite mother/sister to wedding even though they all live on the same compound; is married to a guy who lost his leg in a motorcycle accident and most likely has serious medical expenses; has blabbed about it all in public arenas every chance she gets, etc. etc. This is not someone who has a history of sound judgment or a happy life.

Ashley had mild success as an actress but that career seems long dead. Has been lambasted for her lack of humor and taste for drama (carried through the jungle like a pasha after going to Africa to study moneys during a pandemic and breaking her leg). Even her victimhood at creepy hands of Weinstein didn’t generate much public sympathy.

Naomi had some serious personality disorder— that’s been evident since the Judds got famous. I’m sure that the girls are feeling some relief—which is typical for people losing a malignant person in their life. But I don’t doughy they’re also shocked and devastated.

But I’d be incredibly surprised if we don’t see them using this tragedy to bolster their careers. In many ways, I don’t blame them and, selfishly, I look forward to it because I love me some Judd drama.

Has anyone mentioned the possibility that she may have had a substance abuse problem? The family's reaction to her death was closer to the reaction one would have if someone finally overdosed due to addiction instead of finally committing suicide.

Did she really have hepatitis or was that a cover for a substance abuse issue (or maybe just a cover for her anxiety and depression)? She claimed she got Hep C from an accidental needle prick when she was a nurse. That, itself, sounded phony.

I think that the Judd family, like Will's Smith family, appear to be excruciatingly open about their lives, when in reality, there's so much more to the story that they feel they can never reveal.

I think she had a pain pill problem and finally overdosed.

by Anonymousreply 29May 5, 2022 3:48 PM

R27, the bearded blonde man is Wy's ex-husband, convicted of child molestation.

by Anonymousreply 30May 5, 2022 5:19 PM

Do any of the country fans here remember the story about Naomi and Wy staying on Merle Haggard's tour bus for a stint back in the late 70s, in California? What's the story with that.

I'm listening to "River of Life," the audiobook by Naomi. I had borrowed it from the library before she died. I'm only at the beginning, but past the part about the Oprah docuseries. Sounds like Naomi regretted doing the Oprah docuseries and sounds like she felt blindsided. E.g., the trip to Los Angeles to visit the house where Naomi, Wy, and Ashley lived when they were starting out and broke (not much money).

So far, it sounds like Naomi doesn't take enough responsibility for her fraught relationship, at least during Wy's teen years, with Wy. Yes, Naomi was a young mother, but still.

by Anonymousreply 38May 5, 2022 9:15 PM

We always called them "The Juggs" when growing up.

by Anonymousreply 39May 5, 2022 11:49 PM

R31 Here's the Merle Haggard story from the Cocaine and Rhinestones podcast (thanks to the poster who suggested this episode).

[quote]At 14 years old, Wynonna finds a job cleaning tack in the stables of a nearby ranch. The radio there stays tuned to a local country station. She sings along with the hits of late ‘70s country radio while she works. One day, the station has a contest for some Merle Haggard tickets. She’s not the lucky caller but, Merle being one of her favorites, she tells Naomi she’ll save the money and buy the tickets herself, if they can go to the concert. Naomi agrees. Wy saves the money. They go to the show. Wynonna remembers them leaving Ashley at a friend’s house. Ashley remembers being left alone at home. Naomi only tells the first part of this story.

[quote]After pulling into the parking lot at the venue in Oakland, Naomi leans out her window, flashes a smile at the parking attendant and asks if it would be alright for her to park back by the buses. Oh, by the way, even though Naomi is living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to make ends meet, she drives a red ’57 Chevy with a personalized license plate that says RED HOT and she’d just put a set of whitewall tires on the thing. That’s the reason she gives the attendant for wanting to park by the buses instead of out in that crazy public parking lot. It works. And, wouldn’t you know it, Naomi and her daughter happen to be right there, dressed like movie stars from the 1940s, when Merle Haggard gets off the bus to walk his little dog, Tuffy. After speaking with them for a little while, Merle invites them onto the bus. This isn’t Naomi’s first brush with a famous musician. Back in Kentucky, she and her sister had met The Band one night. Levon Helm even took a liking to her, though Naomi insists she didn’t go back to his hotel room and that Levon was pretty upset about it. Here in Oakland, Merle suggests they watch the concert from the side of the stage instead of sitting out front. This is where Naomi’s version of the story ends.

[quote]Wynonna’s version has Merle making another suggestion after the concert. He suggests Naomi and her 14-year-old daughter join him on the bus for a few days. They go. Ashley remembers being left alone for days. RED HOT, Naomi’s beautiful ’57 Chevy that she needed to park near the busses so nobody would mess with it during the concert, stays where it is, sitting in that parking lot. Merle Haggard’s sons, Marty and Noel, are with him for Wynonna to make friends. She, of course, develops a powerful crush on Noel and, after a few days, mother and daughter fly home with a new favorite hobby. Turns out Naomi has a real talent for getting backstage at concerts.

Do y'all think Naomi will have a big public funeral with other country music stars in attendance or a private one with close family and friends?

by Anonymousreply 43May 6, 2022 1:07 AM

R41 I remember that when that happened one of the tabloids had a story from a nurse that worked with her, and she claimed it was from the staff using hospital drugs. But, I can't remember which tabloid it was.

R43 It will be public, everyone will go, several legends will sing, and it will be held either at the Ryman or the Opry House, depending on bookings for those venues.

Wy was attractive when young. She was also heavily made-up and had the '80s hair, so it's hard to sense what she looked like underneath all that.

Wy does have stage presence and a truly amazing voice. She's gifted, IMO.

by Anonymousreply 67May 7, 2022 6:55 PM

I posted above that I'm currently listening to her audio book, River of Life. In the book, she states that Plan 1 was to jump off a local bridge. (I forgot the name of the bridge.)

Plan 2 was to use a gun. Husband Larry had a collection of guns and, one day, she took a couple of the guns and walked into the nature part of their property and started shooting. Larry came out, took away the guns, and locked them up. Naomi said that Larry didn't know she had a Ruger gun that she kept in another location.

Plan 3 was a stockpile of pills (I forgot which kind). This is according to Naomi.

So, it obviously wasn't the bridge. It was either a gun or some pills. At this point, I don't know how much it matters, to me, at least.

by Anonymousreply 68May 7, 2022 7:19 PM

Ashley Judd pens heartbreaking essay about first Mother’s Day without Naomi

This Mother’s Day is marked by an onslaught of grief and ambivalence for Ashley Judd.

The actress channeled her shock and sadness into a moving essay for USA Today Friday, six days after losing her mom, country music star Naomi Judd, in a reported suicide at age 76.

Ashley, 54, emphasized from the outset that her heart is “replete with gratitude” for what her mother left behind: “Her nurture and tenderness, her music and memory.”

“It wasn’t supposed to be this way,” she wrote. “I was supposed to visit her on Sunday, to give her a box of old-fashioned candy, our family tradition. We were supposed to have sweet delight in each others’ easy presence. Instead, I am unmoored.”

But Ashley quickly moved on to express another dimension of her admittedly complicated emotional state: “Perhaps it’s indecorous to say, but my heart is filled with something else, too. Incandescent rage. Because my mother was stolen from me by the disease of mental illness, by the wounds she carried from a lifetime of injustices that started when she was a girl. Because she was a girl.”

Naomi’s “unintended pregnancy at age 17 … led her down a road familiar to so many adolescent mothers, including poverty and gender-based violence,” Ashley continued, by way of alluding to the specific root causes of said “injustices.”

The “Ruby in Paradise” star and her sister, Wynonna Judd, announced on April 30 that they had lost their “beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness.”

Naomi had long struggled with depression, which ostensibly stemmed from past traumas including sexual and childhood abuse.

It was far from lost on Ashley that her family’s tragedy — already fraught with deeply sensitive and profoundly personal issues around mental health and motherhood — happened to coincide with leak of a Supreme Court draft opinion that signaled the imminent demise of federally assured access to safe abortion.

In her essay, Ashley highlighted a series of startling and disturbing statistics about pregnant women, touching on the many physical and even lethal risks giving birth can carry.

Most unnerving out of the research she cited is a 2021 study that found the leading causes of “pregnancy-associated deaths” over the past 15 years to be “homicide, suicide and drug overdose,” with “intimate partner violence” being a prevalent contributing factor.

It’s worth noting that there is no shortage of scientific evidence demonstrating how trauma often drastically alters the physical makeup of one’s brain, potentially leading to a litany of mental health issues that have nothing to do with the willpower, self-discipline or moral integrity of those affected.

Not that Ashley was ever second-guessing the irreproachable determination and soaring resilience of Naomi’s character.

“My mama was a legend. She was an artist and a storyteller, but she had to fight like hell to overcome the hand she was dealt, to earn her place in history,” she wrote, stressing that Naomi “shouldn’t have had to fight that hard to share her gifts with the world.”

In any case, the tragic loss seems to have only stiffened Ashley’s resolve.

Her essay concluded with a heartfelt call to arms of sorts: “This Mother’s Day, I choose to honor my mama for the person she was, a mother and so much more. And I ask you to honor your own mother, if you are lucky enough to have her. Honor her for more than her labor and sacrifice. Honor her for her talents and dreams. Honor her by demanding a world where motherhood, everywhere, is safe, healthy — and chosen.”

Ashley and Wynonna, 57, came together on May 1, less than 24 hours after announcing their mom’s death, to celebrate Wynonna and Naomi’s induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Both sisters broke down in tears during the emotional ceremony.

It was 14 years ago. I don't think it was as clear back then how awful she is. It did not appear Naomi used her celebrity status to promote any other political candidate or right-wing viewpoints. For all we know, Ashley may have talked her mother into changing her opinion about various topics. I do not know. I just have a difficult time having vitriol for a woman who clearly had problems and spent the past few years trying to raise awareness for mental health.

I agree, r106. Naomi Judd had her flaws, as we all do. But she died grappling to gain control of hers. No one can fault her for that; and now isn't the time for spite.

This is the loveliest way to call someone a difficult pain in the ass I have ever heard:

[quote]Parton opened the memorial service by saying, “We are family. And when it’s family, you forgive them, for they know not what they do. When it’s family, you accept them because you have no choice but to. When it’s family, they’re a mirror of the worst and best in you. You’re always trying to do your best, and they always put you to the test, and you pray for God to do the rest.”

Well, I guess Dolly was truthful. It's clear Naomi was a PITA. I'm still listening to "River of Life." Maybe I won't be able to finish it. She was wealthy, had a husband who stayed by her side, Ashley was on a neighboring property. Naomi's good friend, Dr. Mona Lisa Schulz (PhD and MD in psychiatry) personally tended to Naomi's needs. Lots of people have way less.

It’s about forgiveness, which in the Christian sense means releasing yourself of the burden of guilt.
