Naomi Judd, the Kentucky-born singer of the Grammy-winning duo The Judds and mother of Wynonna and Ashley Judd, has died. She was 76.

The daughters announced her death on Saturday in a statement provided to The Associated Press.

“Today we sisters experienced a tragedy. We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness," the statement said. "We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory." The statement did not elaborate further.

The Judds were to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday.

If you promise a "farewell tour" often enough, God will eventually take you up on it.

This is very sad. I, too, have struggled with depression and suicidal ideation - like the poster above said, it can occur suddenly and can be crushing.

I grew up in the South, a teenager in the 80s, so The Judds were part of the soundtrack of my life as much as Madonna or Belinda Carlisle. This is my favorite of their hits. Thank you, Naomi, for the wonderful memories, I hope you are at peace now.

I've been single pretty much my whole life. I'd say, 95% of the time by choice (now more so than when I was younger). Still, I feel as if I had a partner it would in some ways act as an interpersonal buffer against suicide. Just to have someone to tell my problems to at the end of the day ... I don't have that. And after many years, it takes its toll.

Wow I'm shocked how little im seeing about this

I think families lie about their celebrity loved one being surrounded by family when they died. I don't really want to go into details for obvious reasons, but an older celebrity who died suddenly of natural causes a few years ago was reported to have been surrounded by his family, but he wasn't. It was late at night and his family had gone home for the evening, only his caretakers were there.

It's possible that they found her and prayed over her as the ambulance was arriving, though, that is true. I don't think they'd admit to this if it were assisted suicide, for the legal reasons others have already mentioned.

Apparently I've been sleepin' on the Judds all these years 'cause I didn't expect to enjoy all these videos y'all posted. The music is really great and Wynonna's voice is special. The HOF induction is very well-deserved. It's too bad contemporary country doesn't sound like this anymore.

I didn’t know much about her and didn’t know her struggles. I always thought she was beautiful and had her act together, so I’m surprised by this. I only like one country song, and that is their song Grandpa.

I don’t know any of their songs. Maybe I would if a hit of theirs came on the radio, but really, mother:daughter acts aren’t my thing.

If it was pills, I doubt they’d announce it as suicide immediately. They would know if it was accidental od or deliberate … unless she left a note. If there was no not, it must have been something that was obviously suicidal—gunshot, hanging.

It's being reported that the investigation is on-going so the body has not yet been released to a funeral home. Very mucH looking forward to this funeral.

I'm not a big Naomi fan, but man. Her level of despair must have been brutal. She looked better than she has in a while. As a dear friend of mine who suffers always says, - Mental Illness does NOT get better. Smoke and mirrors.

I'm so upset over the whole thing. My mom and I were Judds fans since the 80s. I feel so sad inside as my mom and I have suffered with depression all of our lives.

I think it was so brave of Ashley to go to that awards ceremony fresh from being attacked by all those bees.

Ashley Judd looks so awful even the Daily Mail, not the kindest publication on the planet, is using old pictures of her.
