Please share with me your favourite 90s house tunes

I discovered this song for the first time tonight. I know, I know, I'm a bad gay. But in my defense, I was too young in 1995 to be clubbing. I was aware of The Tamperer's song "Feel It", but never thought to look up where those lyrics came from before about 15 minutes ago.

I really love this! So, I thought, for those of you who were there at the time, please share your favourite 90s house songs, anything from popular to the deepest of cuts, I'm not fussy. Just make me jealous that I wasn't around in the clubs then. Thanks!

Follow Me - Aly us

I HATE that I sound like my parents, BUT the 90s was the last great decade of music. EVERY genre had a renaissance.

OF COURSE, that's an exaggeration but after like the early 2000s, music seemed to really turn into shit.

[quote]I HATE that I sound like my parents, BUT the 90s was the last great decade of music. EVERY genre had a renaissance.

I was a kid in the 90s and there's nothing like getting together now with friends and playing all our old fave tunes. Of course it was our generation so we will of course say this, but I think we would all agree with you that this was the last great decade of music.

Thanks for the songs so far, R1, R2 and R3. I am going to listen to them all (already on the first one), just want to thank you in advance as house mixes are always really long, so it'll take me a hot minute.

Inner City were proudly associated with "Detroit Techno" which to me is just a subgenre of house. And since we seem to be doing all inclusive club cuts I'd offer this. A more commercial track, but I still always loved it. As always, the specific mix is important, and this is my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 91May 5, 2022 10:35 PM

Many of these I'm hearing for the first time. Back in the 90s our most popular bars were much more into Stock Aitken Waterman. I mean to the point of telling a dancer of color in an amateur contest his tape broke and making him dance to a Jason Donovan track. But it seems it's all anyone could dance to. This is a top 10 U.S. city.

"This thread has diverted from the house theme!"

Maybe, but that's okay (other than the poster posting Stone Temple pilots and RHCP songs). I enjoy hearing the general dance/club tracks people love from the 1990s, house or otherwise. I was/am a huge house music person and realize that "house" is a hard-to-pin-down genre that encompasses many subgenres and outgrowths. Sure, some of the tracks posted are just commercial pop/dance tracks, but so be it. There might have been a house-ish remix or maybe it was part of an overall mix that incorporated house music. But, even if neither, someone enjoyed dancing too it while out all night.

Hearing certain of these gives me chills. I was very sad when I aged out of dancing and clubbing without looking like an unwelcome old fool. I am still sad about this. It stings almost as much as the loss of my looks and value on the international meat markets.

I know I can go out, and I occasionally go to clubs but I know at 60 I'm "gramps over there". I would love to see Miss Kittin and the Hacker at Fabric this Sat. Caroline is 48 so I suppose I should just go cause all the old farts like me might come out.

R189, it's crazy to me that you posted Repercussions. I was really into "acid jazz" in the 1990s - Soul II Soul, Brand New Heavies, Incognito, etc. I group Repercussions with that genre and listened to that album a lot. I believe it was the group's only album. They never caught on big, so that someone is posting it here just makes me smile.

And you're right about MAW. They could turn anything into a legit house track.

by Anonymousreply 195May 9, 2022 9:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 201May 10, 2022 12:59 AM

I had been planning on (& procrastinating about) starting a thread about this very topic for like 3 months. I'm kinda bummed that OP beat me to it and that I've missed the first 200 posts, but I'm glad that someone did it!

Like OP, my own Club/Circuit Days started after the 90s were over. I was a child in the Late 80s and throughout the 90s. So my exposure to good House Music/Remixes at that time came from the countless 12" Record/Cassette/CD singles I purchased back then. And radio shows like "John Garabedian's Open House Party". By the time I was old enough to legally hit the clubs myself (2003 or so) the sound wasn't the same. 00s house was all over the place, more ambiant, more repetitive and less reliant on vocals/divas. In short, several steps down from the previous decade!

So many favorites to choose from but Judy Cheeks' 'So In Love (The Real Deal)' is an old favorite. Particularly the "Frankie Foncett Vocal Mix". I was fascinated when I learned that the song was originally intended for the late Disco Diva/Former Harlette, Sharon Redd. Miss Redd wrote & sang the hook but died before she was able to record the whole song.

The "Phat 'N' Phunky Club Mix" of Cher's 'Believe' is a fucking masterpiece.

It all morphed into EDM and became mainstream. I'm really not a house snob, and I posted earlier that I enjoy seeing all the mainstream dance tracks that may or may not be "house." Plus house was always an amorphous genre with a 50 subgenres and of course overlapping with commercial "dance" music. And a lot had to do with the DJ and how they mixed a set. Some could make great mixes from not-great standalone tracks. In my mind there is "classic" house, but my "classic" may not be someone elses.

by Anonymousreply 204May 10, 2022 3:34 AM

Agreed R204. And again, because of the way I was exposed to House Music in the Late 80s and throughout the entire 90s (Pop Remix Singles & Radio), my taste & knowledge of House Music from that decade leans commercial. But as you know, there's still some AWESOME House within those confines! It truly was a golden age of Dance Music. Up there with the Disco Era of the 70s IMO.

by Anonymousreply 205May 10, 2022 3:44 AM

In the U.S. (at least) the group Cleopatra is considered a Bubblegum Pop/R&B, One Hit Wonder, Brit Import who made a little noise with their single 'Cleopatra's Theme' in 1998. And I suspect the success of that song was only because the group was signed to Madonna's Maverick Records label at that time.

In its original form, the song was forgettable Pop of the day. But Booker T's "Booker T's Mass Fusion Lick" retains none of the original feel. Instead opting for a kick ass groove, with only the vocal chorus consistently looped.

This mix was a mainstay on DirecTVs Music Choice "House" Music channel in the Late 90s.

Plus, while it's a house-centric thread, it became about general 90s club music - whether straight ahead pop, generic "dance," house in any of its myriad variations including remixes of highly commercial songs, "techno," electronica, etc.

I am a hardcore "househead" and there's plenty of house variations I don't like. I really enjoy hearing what people were dancing to in the 1990s, no matter of it's actually house music or not.

I'd love a Strictly Rhythm documentary. Or house music documentary generally.

I bought a book, "Do You Remember House?: Chicago's Queer of Color Undergrounds" since I'm gay, black, and clubbing in Chicago in the 1990s. I expected a joyous read, recounting music, people, clubs, fashion, dance styles, etc. that I had experienced, while also learning about what I had not experienced, what I missed. There were definitely references to things I knew and that was cool, but the book was so disagreeably academic it sucked the joy out of it.

I hate when that happens. There was a book I recently ordered on a subject I thought was fascinating and it was that driest thing I've ever read. I thought: "how do you make this topic boring?!"

Also, listen to some old school Chicago House. Julian Jumpin Perez, Bad Boy Bill, The Hot Mix 5, Gene Hunt (he still flies out to Coachella), there's just so many! Check out DJ Cratebug. He's local (Chicago) and does some killer edits and old school sets. Old WBMX and WGCI Chicago mixes, you can Google and find all this online. I was a teen in Chicago in the 80s and just turned 21 in 1990 and these were awesome years for dance music! Say what? House Music All Night Long!

No R337. Your song is NOT house. Some of you seem to have no ear. House is a stylie of dance music. It's not "any dance music made in certain years. For crissakes.

House started in the mid 80s. This song is considered one of the first house tracks. Much early house music is VERY basic sounding, Drum track and a few syncopated sounds. Neither elaborate sounding disco nor UK garage and Electronic. No wall of sound. All that came later to house, in the 90. 80s house was simple and grounded.

by Anonymousreply 345May 15, 2022 9:29 AM

Thanks, R345, but you could've said that nicer. I am interested in learning. I was just asking because the song is called Sky My House Band. I wondered if that was more what really early House was due to the name. Often the way music starts off is somewhat different from house it is during its hey day too (see Disco).

I appreciate the information, however. Thank you.

THen why don't you google around a bit. The Internet put a world of info and entertainment at our fingertips. Your selection at 337 is attic/Techno which started and evolved concurrently with House but as quite different sounds at the start. . Eventually they bled into each other, about 10 years AFTER house started, which was 84 85. So 95. more or less. Here an article for you.

The snark is because you came off as lazy and having no ear for different genres of dance music,.

Dude. This is a FORUM. It's for people to talk with each other, exchange ideas. Some of us like to have conversations with people. I wouldn't bother coming here at all otherwise. I know I can google things. But I want to converse with YOU.

No one is expecting anyone to do any "work". That is a silly thing to say. But there are many people on this site who were there at the time and have knowledge and I want to hear from THEM. That's why I started this thread in the first place. And I'll continue to have discussions with people because that's how I like to communicate. Thank you.

Given you're such a purist on house music, shocking that you didn't know Green Velvet's other monikers made some of the greatest house records ever, including Dajae ("Brighter Days") and Cajmere ("Percolator"). And "Flash" came out in 1995. If Curtis Jones from Chicago who used to spin on BMX ain't house, then nothing is.
