Destroy, bitches.
It's impossible to make a "socially relevant production" set amidst a gaggle of shirtless homos having a decadent weekend on a resort island. They whine about their beach bodies, and how they can't drink as much as they used to, and how they're torn between a hung sex-idiot and a career fag who makes them feel slow and inadequate. It's a very, very narrow slice of the American Pie who spends their time doing this, and the problems of this little group aren't too relatable for the rest of us.
Also: Ugh, Margaret Cho?

I'll watch it on a warm summer evening sipping a mint julep and polishing my French silver while waiting for my midnight appointment with a horse-hung Ivoirien. Such is my sad life I'm sure the movie can't be worse. Conrad Ricamora is worth watching. I think Bowen Yang can be funny but it doesn't seem promising in that clip, which seems whiny.

Bowen and his crew are part of the NYC gay mentality that says you have no choice *but* to go to Fire Island. This would be a very short movie if someone said to them, “you know there are a lot of other places to go and spending all your time trying to fit in here is probably a big reason you’re feeling so miserable.”
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 26, 2022 11:15 AM |
The odds of Bowen Yang scoring a hot white doctor on Fire Island are the same as me getting to suck Jamie Dornan's cock.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 26, 2022 11:18 AM |
Do you think Bowen even considered a non-white actor for his romantic interest?
This reminds me of when someone on here wrote parody lyrics of “I Enjoy Being A Girl” for Chrysanthemum Tran where she confessed she just wanted a white cis-man.

You with me so far? And he makes me really nervous. Can you picture it? Okay, so I try and act cool and...hang on...you're gonna love this...I trip and fall down in front of him! Are you dying of hysterical laughter yet? And then...and this ties the whole thing up...he comes over to help me and tells me he's a doctor! Oh, my God, I'm a comedy genius!"

HOWEVER
I wouldn't watch a movie about Fire Island UNLESS the plot involved infiltration by a terrorist organization and all attendees are forced to kill each other Battle Royale style.

I fucking hate these kinds of movies. Most gay men don't have a *fierce posse of gay bitches* on either side of the aisle — the average looking cynical outcasts or the haughty Hell's Kitchen headless torsos — yet there's a tiny subset of privileged filmmakers in Hollywood persisting to make the gay Madea happen. The only people that will watch this are single straight women.

Are there still a lot of rice queens out there? In the 80s, my Filipino roommate would take me to the Star Sapphire bar in the East 50s. It made him feel pretty when the borderline homely Caucasian boys with names like Tim and Edward would fawn all over him. Neither being Asian nor into Asian boys myself, I was radioactive there. Having a race fetish makes it easy for the average-to-homely gay man to hook up.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 26, 2022 12:58 PM |

When I lived in a small town in the late nineties/early aughts, I pretty much exclusively hung out in gay places because it was the only place to feel free. The great part about moving to NYC, for me, was that I didn’t have to ghettoize myself. I honestly think doing so is a reason why so many gay men feel dissatisfied as they age. How can you be happy if you’re constantly chasing youth and dick and the same cocktails set to the same music surrounded by the same shirtless uniform? I try not to judge it, but it’s odd to me.

It reminds me of Russell T Davies reacting to criticism of Queer As Folk when it aired 23 years ago. He said he’d read a complaint saying ‘this doesn’t reflect my lift, I don’t party every night or take drugs or get drunk, I go to bed and read a book’ and RTD replied along the lines of ‘well the who fuck would make a tv show out of that’

Some of you never went to Fire Island and the Pines. It is at least 50-70% "posses". That's the foundation of everything. So this is very realistic for those two locales. It may not be your cup of tea, but you can't deny it exists. And it is not all "a list" posses either.

So I have been listening to Bowen Yang and Matt Roger's podcast Las Culturistas, and they have quickly devolved from catering to a mostly gay male audience to catering to a mostly progressive female audience. Take a quick guess which demo is more expansive and lucrative. This movie reads the same -- it's a woman's idea of what it's like to be a gay man. This comes with the very feminine rom-com tropes. Like the hug (reminiscent of a mother hugging her child that escaped from a burning building) at the beginning between Bowen and Joel read as "straight female gaze". Like I don't even think lesbians are that dramatic.

"U Rang?"- The pilot episode introduces Ping Dong (Bowen Yang) a gay call center Manager transferred to a remote town in Idaho. Chubby faghags Braelynne, Jaelin and Raylen (Beanie Feldstein, Gabourey Sidibe and Ricky Lake) quickly adopt him- but he runs afoul of everyone else! Especially the homophobic Regional Manager (Tom Arnold). Also starring George Takei as Papa.

by Anonymous | reply 60 | April 27, 2022 5:52 AM |
As expected, "Fire Island" seems to be EXACTLY the same as "To My Girls"! They both wanted to use the title "White: Bad"
The exact same dreary trauma of POC gays (who only do white gay things) shrieking about how white gays are ruining their lives and robbing them of all self worth, while the white gays aren't paying them any mind at all!
The same girly, mincing, performative lazy gay stereotypes and all the characters doing their "Hey gurl" best embracing their demanded shitty dialogue about "We're all FAMILY!", and 'We've ALL been friends for so long!" while they barely appear to be in their thirties!
All the white gays are "CIS GAY WHITE OPPRESSORS!", while the non whites are "Deserving Queers". It's all so preposterous, offensive and DULL. It looks like more woke Queer bullshit.

I bet they won't even let one of the Asian characters utter the phrase "Rice Queen" even to sneer at the (very real) subset! Far too triggering to the Gen Z audience!
Another quick observation is the ageism on display. Fire Island Pines has a large percentage of gay men in their 40s, 50s and older. Who the hell do you think can afford to vacation there, yet I can see none of the characters or even extras is a day over thirty six!

I did the Pines for years and had a lot of fun.
I’m a hung top Black dude and had no problems at all getting action.
I’m all about diversity, but I wish these characters and all the press surrounding it didn’t have to be all about how racist white gays are. Why can’t they just tell a story about Asian men and let it be that? It reeks of insecurity.
And also I did notice that the one Black dude is fat, “sassy” and completely sexless. I’m sure that’s just a coincidence.
And also JK Booster is HOT but my God are the rest of them FUG.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | April 27, 2022 5:57 PM |
JK Booster is beautiful and I think Matt Rogers is cute, too, and looks to be well cast as the “Lydia” of the group.
I love that Bowen Yang cast himself as the Jane - the sweetest and most beautiful of the sisters? To quote this movie: “Girl!”
Bowen would actually probably have been a scream as a Fire Island Lady Catherine, a character who would actually be a much more interesting gay Asian foil for Booster’s Elizabeth.

So the Hollywood Reporter only allows a gay reporter to review the film? From R95's link:
[quote] In terms of gay destinations, I’ll confess I go for the relatively mellow vibe of Provincetown over the circuit-party hedonism of Fire Island. But even if the glossily rendered setting is not your scene, there’s a lot to like here. Charlie, the pretty white guy, is not the prize but instead, after a bunch of dumb missteps, has to prove he’s worthy of Howie’s affections. [quote]The notion that neither Charlie nor Will, who’s biracial Asian, would be unduly troubled by the classist, racist meanness of their housemates becomes hard to swallow. But it’s essential to the plot mechanics and makes it all the more gratifying when they finally do come to their senses and shrug off the disapproval of Cooper and company.
[quote]Ultimately, it also works because the screenplay is sufficiently rooted in personal experience to touch on the openly discriminatory way in which a lot of white power gays dismiss “otherness” of any kind. There are also amusing digs at the opposite extreme, the fetishization of Asian men by white serial “rice queens.” It’s to the filmmakers’ credit that those elements are smoothly woven into the mix, never preachy.

It’ll be interesting to see if a movie that is based on Pride and Prejudice (which has tons to say about the ways in which parents fail and sabotage their children) and celebrates “chosen family” will deal with any of the real life trauma that Booster and Yang experienced with their homophobic parents (Booster was adopted by a family of white evangelicals and essentially ended up homeless when they found out he was gay as a teenager and Yang’s Chinese immigrant parents put him in conversion therapy) or if “hot white gay A listers are mean to us” is the sum total of the problems facing their characters.

Seems like Fire Island is very year 2000. Curious if gay boys still go there - or if it’s all eldergays now. Have gone a few times since - but the absence of decent hotels makes it clique-y by nature. The crap hotels aren’t worth the obscene cost.
I do think it’s beautiful - so much better than the Jersey, or DE, shore. And much more fun - and car free - than the Hamptons.

“On Saturday night in Austin, Texas, Ted Nugent opened for Donald Trump with a kind of love song: “I love you people madly, but I’d love you more if you went forward and just went berserk on the skulls of the Democrats and the Marxists and the communists.” This was hours after an 18-year-old white supremacist terrorist—his words—in Buffalo, New York, walked into a Tops supermarket, in a zip code he allegedly chose for having “the highest Black percentage that is close enough to where I live,” and allegedly shot 13 people, 11 of them Black, 10 of them now dead.“ This is hideously violent, especially for someone opening for a man who just finished being President and may have been inciting a violent attempt at a coup on January 6th. Why would he let a man opening for him incite mass murder?
It still doesn’t mean I agree with hormone therapy for kids - I don’t. They would be better served by reducing misogyny and homophobia in society. They shouldn’t have to suffer irreversible health consequences in an effort not to be picked on. All the talk about becoming your true self by undergoing medical treatments that will change you in unknown ways is like virtual reality in a way. You don’t like your body, try a different look. Only it’s not really a game, and it’s not so perfect, and in real life you age and naturally become less androgynous than in your youth and none of the ideas of blaming one unrelated external factor for you being unhappy actually usually play out in a great way. And that’s much more true if you never had a physical cause for your dysphoria, because intersex people have taken hormones to look more like their chosen sex, mostly happily, for years. My college girlfriend transitioned, 20 years ago. She was no more masculine than me - like me she grew up with brothers, so of course sometimes played games that are more popular with boys than girls. But she wasn’t a man, and she didn’t look like a man after transitioning either. She just looked like a woman with a bold style and leather jackets. I don’t understand why being called a man suddenly mattered to her at the age of 20 when it hadn’t before and the decision seemed sudden. I’m androgynous too, and my family still calls me by the name I used to go by in my cross dressing period, which is a male name. But I never changed my pronouns even at the height of it, and the things my girlfriend embraced, I rejected. Because for me it was about internalized misogyny, which I never said out loud during that time and would have vehemently denied, but it was how I felt inside nonetheless. It wasn’t gender dysphoria, it was associations about maleness and femaleness that I had while growing up. I felt better when I let go of trying to label myself as anything, especially something I wasn’t in the most literal sense.

Ugh!! I am so frustrated with Bowen Yang. He's on SNL and has this opportunity to put out something, ANYTHING different, and he puts this cliche out. The gaggle of gays, of course Bowen meets the NYC hot, white, MD. The neon pink, the hag, Fire Island - it would be a total 90's film except one would come out POZ and everyone would rally around him. Where's Jeffrey?
I would love to see something like Basic Instinct starring gay men. A taught psychological thriller with hot, steamy sex, an edge of your seat plot, and high production value. Is that so much to ask. The only way a gay film gets a major theatrical release is if it is neutered to get the frau crowd and maybe their boyfriends out for a laugh. All we've got is Brokeback Mountain.

I must admit I've always wanted a gaggle of gays, but it just never worked out for me. This is often the consequence of being devastatingly handsome. Jealousy abound and projections from others that are often incorrect. Also, shyness or quietness does not necessarily equal a snob. Still, I bet on the wrong horse in my 20's - hot women as friends. I thought this was really cute and ended up being exactly what it set out to be: A frothy rom-com. The only downsides were that Bowen Yang basically spent the whole move whining, Conrad Ricamora played the "uptight" guy a little too well and I think it could have used a bit more of a biting/wink wink on current gay culture (Like, rich white gays are bad - we get it) - but the latter is minor. It was just trying to be a silly rom com and it did it!

Does anyone know couples in real life where one is a screaming neurotic queen and the other is a quiet calm masculine guy (who is more attractive)? We keep seeing this pairing - Billy’s character with Luke in the Bros trailer, David and Patrick on schitt’s creek, and in this fire island movie does Bowen end up with some quiet white doctor (haven’t watched yet)?
I don’t know any real life gay couples like this - I know some straight ones but the neurotic wife is always way hotter and that’s seemingly why the husband puts up with it.

He annoys me on SNL but here he was just a person, not some shrieking stereotype. I was surprised by how human everybody came off - the trailer played into the FLAMES but in context it wasn't that. The director did a good job evening out the tone, making it feel more human.

My issuei is that I didn't buy the onscreen chemistry between the leads. And that, to me, is what every romcom has to have to be memorable.
Sidebar: I do think the White Men are the Devil trope is getting tired and needs to be retired. Quit making the villain's main source of evil his skin color.
by Anonymous | reply 232 | June 4, 2022 3:24 PM |
But the main villain's issue wasn't his skin color, it was that he was a classist snob. Part of it was that JKB and his friend didn't "look" right but they made pains to show JKB's friends being drunken maniacs too so the rich dude's sneering made sense. And one of the big romance's was with a white dude, so the movie clearly isn't anti-white. Also that Nick Adams character -- who I assume is who we're calling "the villain" -- wanted to land the hot doctor himself, which was why he was acting so gross. There was that one side character who was always on the staircase asking who they were, he was def racist. But I don't think it's as cut and dry as y'all are making it -- the movie makes pains so it isn't

It’s not a bad movie, but it’s riddled with 1998 tired stereotypes. It definitely makes Fire Island look like a horrible, vapid hedonistic scene.

[quote] Cluesless was trash to begin with, I’ve not understood the more recent embracing of that movie as some higher art form or having good performances. It’s an embarrassment that is better off left forgotten.
I literally do not know one person under 45 who does not like Clueless. It got fantastic reviews when it came out, was a box-office hit and continues to be one of the most beloved movies from the 90's.
I believe "Fire Island" is based off of "Pride and Prejudice" where "Clueless" was based off of "Emma".

R252 yeah its a stretch but that's the romance genre. How often do we see people pursuing someone less attractive or (even wilder in my opinion) suitors overlooking INSANE behavior that would make anyone in the real world run for the hills?

It's Pride and Prejudice, Bowen is Jane with the sweet romance, JKB is Lizzie with the friends to lovers with his Mr. Darcy. "Lydia" gets plowed by "Wickham" who puts a sex tape on the internet without his consent.

R232 - The "white men are the devil" trope is only tired to white gays. Gays of color connect with it, and will continue to do so, because it's real life experience. On the other side, gays of color are tired of the "white gays as the lead characters in everything" trope that has been around for decades since the dawn of modern gay-themed drama.
And truly, with minorities being vilified by white folks in films since the beginning of cinema a century ago, it's fascinating that some white folks can't take the slightest bit of critique after only a few years.

I’m happy enough as a rich-ish white gay guy to see “rich white gays” get roasted (though I would posit that actual “rich rich” white gay thirtysomethings don’t make a religion out of Fire Island in 2022), but if all the Asian characters are broke starving artist types who didn’t get pressured to go to med school I would side-eye that a bit.

I watched it Friday night. And what started out as hate watching turned out to be an ok movie. Granted I was stoned out of my mind, but still.
The writing was better than expected, but the thing is this - Fire Island, love it or hate it, is a very one dimensional place. So outside of fucking and beaches and booze there isn't a whole lot of plot to be had unless you're lamenting about where you fall into the gay pecking order while there.

R295 The operative word in your statement is "mostly". No one can contest the role of white gays and lesbians. No one is claiming white gays and lesbians had "no" role. But they did not have the "only" role. It was a joint effort. So try making just a little room for the contributions of others.
Additionally, it's very curious how you show such umbrage at the mere suggestion of racism among some white gays, when you yourself are displaying such obvious white resentment toward gays of color. To quote Mart Crowley, that's the pot calling the kettle beige.

I thought it was funny when the Bowen character leaves 1 day early like a dramatic queen because he "can't deal" with seeing the doctor (who he met a few days before) with his longterm boyfriend. So extra. Can't wait 24 hours and leave with the rest of the group. Has to pack up his shit and take a 5PM ferry to fly back to San Francisco.

by Anonymous | reply 321 | June 5, 2022 7:22 PM |
I agree, R320. There were some plot devices like that which were a bit forced.
I would have liked it if Bowen's character had the meltdown, got over it enough to put a brave face on, and because he put himself back out there with his friends (even with the new baggage he acquired) - THAT is the opportunity which presented itself with the doctor (or some other guy). Being rewarded for being strong, rather than being rewarded for acting on a weaker impulse.

On no planet would a handsome doctor of ANY ethnicity put it all on the line and declare himself to mopey, homely Bowen Yang. An atrocious bit of miscasting. Yang was just awful.
The "Noah" character - the lead, in a screenplay written by the actor himself - was so bitchy, mean and obnoxious that no one as a introverted and thoughtful as the "Will" character would continue to come back for verbal abuse over and over again.
That the movie was chock- full of tired gay cliches didn't bother me - the actual Fire Island is crawling with tired gay cliches - but the FI depicted doesn't resemble the one I've gone to for years. For starters, in reality, there are few Asian, much less groups of them, and relatively few people under 40. In fact, a FI pool party would hit the same target age range as a Palm Springs pool party - withered, grizzled dinosaurs shoved into speedos.
But maybe the movie will usher in a renaissance for the place and young people will return in droves.

by Anonymous | reply 339 | June 5, 2022 7:45 PM |
In my experience, FI is fairly mixed. I have gone to 'faboo' parties in the Pines, and there were plenty of non-White muscle queens around, and a few average dudes in polo shirts. I've also spent a lot of time at the Grove, and it wasn't all dykes. There were many regular gays, some in groups, some solo. There was some cruising, and some not. It's way more of a mixed bag experience than is being presented here.
I don't get why people who are ignorant of the nuances within our culture keep promoting the same ignorance and stereotypes by decrying that these stereotypes are all that is out there. The Island is a lot of things to a lot of people. There aren't even enough "Rich White Muscly A-Gays" out there to fill out the two Island gayborhoods, so I don't get why folks perpetuate that notion. Most of the folks decrying the Island have never even been there.

[quote]That post at [R311] is unfortunate. Did I see the same movie as him? The movie makes fun of the overly body conscious stereotypes. They aren't all thirsty, they aren't all judgy. And what other movies were Cho and Peppermint involved in together? He's just making shit up to sound 'fierce'.
I don’t think that guy got the movie at all. You have to be smart to understand the nuances of satire. The movie was skewering the judgemental, body-conscious, toxic types, not embracing them.
by Anonymous | reply 384 | June 5, 2022 11:45 PM |
I went in thinking I was going to hate it but ended up loving it. It wore me down and ended up charming me. It was way better than it had any right to be and the social commentary was very relevant but of course, ironically, the toxic gays would end up dismissing it just like the racist toxic gays in the movie were dismissive of the Asians. They can’t see themselves or refuse to see themselves.
by Anonymous | reply 385 | June 6, 2022 12:45 AM |
R371, the OP is the only one who called it Bowen Yang's Fire Island, and that's just because he's more known/hated on DL than Joel Kim Booster, whose movie it really is. The movie is just called "Fire Island" by the rest of the world.
by Anonymous | reply 386 | June 6, 2022 12:52 AM |
R285 that happened to me too. I really hated the start. Turned it off a few times. But I ended up really liking it. I find most romcoms are like that for me.
I start off a typical DL asshole and end up a sappy romantic.

There's social commentary but the movie isn't all that great.
by Anonymous | reply 396 | June 6, 2022 1:21 AM |

I thought the scene between Bowen and Joel near the end where they talk about how hard it is for them was actually beautifully written. There was a lot unsaid and they both acted it quite well. That was the most honest part of the whole movie. Felt like a conversation the two of them have had many times in real life - especially since Joel is always with someone and Bowen is always single.
I will say this movie was 1000 times more enjoyable than Happiest Season - which was so humorless and toxic that Dan Levy was the best part of it.
by Anonymous | reply 401 | June 6, 2022 1:55 AM |
Several people have said it's so dated, like something out of the 90s. Can you give us the names of some of those 90s gay Asian romcoms, since there were evidently so many of them back then?

Oh boo hoo, like Asians have it so hard, with all the privilege they enjoy in this new woke society. Like we whites don’t have it hard? Where is OUR Fire Island movie?! Stop demeaning us whites and making us out to be the villains! At least Bros will be all white. So done with Hulu.

That Logo Fire Island show was abhorrent. Definitely "this is why they hate us."
r404 it has nothing to do with racism. There were only two Asians in the movie, most of the cast was white. It just sucked and seemed very dated. And shallow. And annoying.

It ain't close to NYC and it ain't cheap!
by Anonymous | reply 410 | June 6, 2022 5:21 AM |
Actually, it wasn’t a parody. But it just goes to show how far the villainization of whites has gone that any pushback is seen as a parody.

by Anonymous | reply 422 | June 6, 2022 3:07 PM |
R418, no, I think it’s more a matter that if you are growing up as a member of a very small minority and the people who you spent most of your time around as a kid, in school, about town, etc don’t accept you as a part of the community you grew up in, it’s disconcerting. You could say the same thing about straight people, a majority, not accepting that a gay man or a lesbian woman is a real man/woman, a real person, deserving of human rights. Or even all the FTM people who are attracted to men but want to identify as men - they recognize that men also identify women as an “other” with less power, something to be either used or discarded but not personally identified with. Not that it is only white people who ever do this; ethnic and gender discrimination happens globally.

I don’t think the original tweet was very angry sounding, just kind of a observation. Margaret Cho’s non-stereotypical role as ex-work college/former party girl/mother figure, paired with the group of guys acting out female story lines from Pride & Prejudice kind of throws a twist into it too.

If the two leads were white this movie would be deemed racist because of its treatment of the other minority characters. The black friend is especially used horribly.
And of course, they end up with rich white guys at the end. It would’ve been more progressive and less cliche of the Asian friends ended up falling for each other and ignoring the white guys.
It’s pretty pathetic when minorities complain about how much they hate Fire Island when they desperately wish to be part of the scene.
by Anonymous | reply 454 | June 7, 2022 10:12 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 455 | June 7, 2022 10:28 PM |
I agree r330. I thought Bowen Yang was great, my problem is James Scully who plays Charlie is too attractive. It makes the movie not work for me because a guy like that wouldn't see Bowen Yang on the beach and immediately try to get with him. We all know this is true.
It sends a unhealthy message about idolizing guys out of your league. Bowen's character shouldn't need to land a hottie, he should find love and happiness with a guy who is a perfect match for him.

Earlier, they had gone to the beach, where the sand oozed between their toes and time lost its militant edge. They took a walk back home that lasted for what felt like an eternity (ten minutes), during which they listened to Lorde and SOPHIE and split open the most delicious pineapple in the world. For dinner, they made junk carbonara from pantry leftovers. At some point, Booster peeled off and went to the bathroom. He stripped, got hard, and now is staring at his reflection. His body, his dick. He has measured it upwards of 10,000 times and knows it is an objectively good dick, a gorgeous dick. Still, there is always a difference between knowing something and feeling it. At this moment, high as Mount Olympus, he can look down at his naked body with his third eye open and agree: He is fucking hot.

R477 - Ha! Love that. A lesbian friend dragged me to an Alison Bechdel live interview at the LA Central Library YEARS ago... well before Fun Home and all that hoopla. Had no idea who she was beforehand; found her very (dryly) funny and engaging. I love that she weighed in on this one.

R456 Good LORD. That's the same FUCKED UP attitude people who go to Fire Island have. I mean...you complain about the negative stereotypes in a movie like this, but you push the same doctrines they do.
by Anonymous | reply 488 | June 8, 2022 10:22 AM |
What exactly is fucked up r488? I think projecting the idea that happiness is finally landing that hottie you never thought would talk to you is fucked up. That's a terrible mentality.
Quit worshipping at the altar of the cliche hotties and ignoring the other 90% of gay men out there who could make you happy. We've all seen it at a club, 90% of guys all chasing after the same 10% of guys rather than stopping and trying to flirt with each other.
So yeah, I stand by comment.
by Anonymous | reply 489 | June 8, 2022 11:38 AM |
Yikes R478 that is a terrible introduction. The whole article reads like an advertisement for emptiness and drug use, like Tama Janowitz crossed with early Gawker. Truly insufferable.

People on Twitter always rave about E. Alex Jung's profiles, but I usually find them overwritten and overly impressed with the subjects. The subtext is always "This person is so cool and I am so cool for hanging out with them."

That article is horrible. JKB comes off as a whiny insufferable narcissist. The writer manages to make gay men, in general, seem like a bunch of immature, overly emotional brats with drug problems. Great representation.
Especially loved this passage…
The weekend Booster and his boyfriend — a tall, actor-handsome video-game producer named John Michael — declared themselves officially in a relationship, he had sex with a porn star. Not that they would ever be monogamous. Don’t be so homonormative about it. They were in Palm Springs for Pride, and Booster sensed that JM, as he calls him, needed some space. So he suggested they go to separate sex parties. When they linked back up around 5 a.m., their friends ran over to Booster to tell him, “He didn’t even have sex with anyone! He just stood in the kitchen and talked about you the entire time!” To which Booster replied, “Perfect.” The next day, he remembers JM recounting it as a sweet story: “And then we went to two separate sex parties but neither of us had sex.” “Finally, I had to tell him,” says Booster. “I was like, ‘Babe, I’m so sorry to have to ruin this cute story you have, but, unfortunately, I did have sex with someone else.’ ”

R493 oh please, as if that makes me feel "bad." Read the rest of the article. I don't care that he's non-monogamous - he comes off as completely self-obsessed and exhausting to be around. And his friends seem the same way. I don't know how accurate it is - the writer seems to insert himself quite a bit (bringing up their own history). So it could all be a bunch of bullshit. But I'm glad I saw the movie before reading that (and I enjoyed it). I never would watch after reading that profile.

I could really go without all the wokeism and preaching in the script tho, everything from climate change to sex positivity to racism and all that. I mean we get it. I’ll be glad when people become more clever about this stuff or better get just eliminate it and tell a fucking story.
But yes it’s funny and cute but I did notice again that the fat black gay guy was effiminate, sexless, and underdeveloped. JKB is doing exactly what he accuses white gays of: centering his own experience at the cost of others. But whatever it was cute. And also JKB made sure he put that tight little bod on display as much as he possibly could. Good for him he looked hot.

If you go with a group of friends you're close with and share your interests it can be fun but if you're only there to try and fit into "the scene" it can be really really grotesque.

Nearly all of them were effeminate, the character he is based on from Jane's novel IS sexless and preaches at other people, he was definitely underdeveloped.
He was funny in the molly scene but it's sad that they didn't give him more or at least another scene where he is the focus for a bit, to do.
Ultimately you had to ask why he was even there since they established that the Booster and Yang's characters worked together and became friends, the other two characters went to school together and he was just kind of there.

[R34] Agree. Whoever produced this outdated crap is completely out of touch with the gay community in general. I think Conrad Ricomora is the only realistic character in this movie. His whole unhappy, troubled persona was very convincing although he did come across as an asshole at times. I think Conrad should have played the Asian in love with the hot doctor. He still could've been nerdy ala "How To Get Away With Murder." Nerdy Conrad is still rather hot. Bowen Yang will never be hot. It's just a fact. Oh and someone please give poor gay ally Margaret Cho something other than a fag hag part to play.

It’s too bad Joel is such a druggie and proud of it. That was the one thing I hated about the movie was the glorification of drug use. Why would even the Bowen character do drugs. That was so out of character. So many people in the gay community have died from drugs and addiction. It’s not all fun and games. What a bad look for gays to glorify this.
And they swallowed random pills they found on the floor. That is very dangerous and is how Trevor Lefkowitz died. His heart exploded after taking two random pills.

That NY Mag article is indeed insufferable. I could only get through about a third. It's so clear: Booster could not get what he wanted, so he BECAME all the worst traits of what he wanted, instead of just being a human. Thus is the cycle of a certain breed of gay. They lose whoever they really are to become a vapid stereotype. This afflicts gays of every race.

You seem very naive r522. Making a movie about Fire Island without party drugs would be Disney bullshit. Recreational drug use is very normal among the gay party scene in the big cities. The type of characters who would go party in Fire Island are exactly the type who would also enjoy some recreational drugs.

by Anonymous | reply 551 | June 12, 2022 2:24 PM |
I think at the beginning maybe 10 minutes in it was really playing hard on the rom-com jokes in a comedic way. Bowen falls down a step onto his knees and shouts back kind of unpleasantly at his friends and that’s the “love at first sight” moment. It’s funny because you wouldn’t expect to happen. As the storyline goes, this group of friends has been coming to Fire Island every year for 10 years, and this is the first time they knew the rich guys’ houses even existed. Bowen’s happy ending with Charlie is also not really so happy- sure, Charlie liked him ok, but it’s just “like” not “love”. They talked for five days. The feeling of this is like someone took real life and juxtaposed it over a rom-com in a way that the rom-com feels a little jarring. But the real conversation between Joel and Bowen at the end when they talk about being vulnerable is worth watching and there are other moments that feel that way too. I liked the movie.

For people who claim to hate white gay men, POC gays are completely obsessed with them. They don't even have to do anything to be centered in their psyche, just exist. It will get to a point where we have movies by Queer artists depicting white gay genocide and being applauded for it.

R569, the group of friends in the movie mostly are friends in real life, and are racially diverse - in the storyline they are all relatively poor and worked in the same restaurant. The movie shows a lot of petty theft and even a sense of career shame for the friends while not shaming the rich guys for their success or good careers. It’s very, very far from trying to lead anyone towards any kind of hate crime.

I've noticed that many POC gay men as well as Jewish gay men who are in the public eye are very "extra" and dial up the gayness to 11. Joel Kim Booster, Bowen Yang, Billy Porter on the POC side, and Andy Cohen, Billy Eichner, and Dan Levy on the Jewish side.
Conversely, many white (non-Jewish) gay men such as Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff, Zachary Quinto and Matt Bomer, among others, tend to be more on the side of regular male behavior and are not screaming queens.
Just an observation.

It didn't really make sense how the guy getting fucked by Zane Phillips was left out of the resolution, but that is how story telling works r582. He is a supporting character, so you have to give more screen time to making sure your main characters have a complete arc.

It's the gay "Pretty Woman."
The Gays love it!

R569 And you seem to be obsessed with the people who you claim are obsessed with YOU.

[quote] For people who claim to hate white gay men, POC gays are completely obsessed with them.
Only sexually.

[quote] I've noticed that many POC gay men as well as Jewish gay men who are in the public eye are very "extra" and dial up the gayness to 11.
Sounds more like the media will only give attention to POC gay men if they're extra while it accepts gays whites who are not. Also, nearly all the POC and Jewish men you mention are comedians, while none of the whites are.

I enjoyed the movie because, despite its flaws, it was about the joys of deep friendship. The short scene of them dancing together on the dock made me a little teary, actually.
It was also nice to see a movie from the POV of Asian gays. Why not?

I'd never even heard of Joel Kim Booster until this movie. Is he a thing?
