by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 21, 2022 8:23 PM |
I was wondering when this was going to come out. I was taking a language class with a woman when during a conversation I told her how much I liked Groundhog Day. This lovely woman suddenly got very angry and couldn't say how much she hated him. She was working as an assistant editor on one of his films and he would physically mime fucking a woman as in banging his groin into woman's ass as he did to her. He found it pretty funny. She couldn't afford to say anything because she needed the job but her humiliation and rage years later were palpable.

From Deadline comments:
He lived in Charleston SC for years. He went into a liquor store, strolled down an aisle, grabbed a bottle of tequila, opened it up, took a slug, put the cap back on and put it on the shelf. The cashier was staring at him the whole time. He just looked at her and said “No one will believe you”, and walked out. There were quite a few stories like that about him. That’s not his character acting, that’s just how he is.

Ben Dreyfus is hilarious and the gayest sounding straight man I've ever read. He's funny enough to tempt me back to Twitter.
I never meet with anyone at work with my office door closed and always keep my eyes "up here" if you catch my meaning. A few months ago at 9am before most people had arrived I did briefly glance at my attractive Italian American colleague's ass as he walking out the door. He's straight buy he has a great sense of style and wears pants that show off his ass. His back was to me and no one else was in as far as I could tell so I hope no one caught me. I might be accused of inappropriate sexual behavior at work.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | April 22, 2022 9:31 AM |
Murray is one of those people who doesn't instinctively know how to act around others, plus he became famous for being weird and inappropriate, so he just kept being weird and inappropriate because almost nobody told him to stop. Of course, he also had a lot of fans who ignored the domestic violence accusations or made excuses for the things he would say on set, stuff like that.
About 20 years ago I had the uncomfortable opportunity to see him get scolded by his brother Brian for inappropriate behavior, and it was the kind of conversation you'd expect between a couple of young teen brothers, not guys in their 50s.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | April 22, 2022 9:49 AM |
r58 not a fan or triggered... it's just damn funny the person that comes in, I heard met this woman..... Wait, no, it was SEVERAL women. Wait, no, it was even worse! And worse! and worse! And that's why he's a witch and must be burned at the stake.
I don't doubt he's sexually harassed some woman but that could be virtually anything these days. . a microaggression, staring at her for five seconds, even not looking at her while talking to her.
I'd be more apt if someone came out of the woodworks to say they were assaulted under the christmas tree by Bill, his family and the dog, too!
And it wouldn't be out of character because he was a well known sleezeball, the last few years, he's been rather grabby, slappy, knocking hats off and more cases of proximity violence - short of hand on but violent actions in the proximity of the person that could be viewed as intimidation or threating.
But come on, you gotta laugh when someone recalls an ancient story of an unnamed woman they met in passing and now said story expands to many women that were exposed to him raping an invisible person while he was walking his invisible dog... and unable to escape the nightmares of such a devestating as his menacing stare was everywhere, every television set, in every nation... there was no choice for her but to commit suicide and send out anonymous letters to women who all shared her name, all of them with stories of their own, about the horrors of Bill Murray.. so one day they could gather under the light of the full moon, take a handful of her ashes and throw it in the air and call upon moon g-ddess to reap her revenge... and you know what, today is that day.

I don't think anyone though Bill Murray was a good guy, save the social media people who slavish him with attention for showing up, uninvited, to peoples' wedding, etc. Kind of like their devotion to Jeff Goldblum, which gave him a late career as a 'hip old'.

It's "Dreyfuss" with two Ssessses, gurls.
Also, Ben can be funny and observant, but too often he's just a bitch for no reason, like publicly complaining about his Mother Jones writers, defending Chris Pratt, or that weird Twitter rant he went on because he didn't recognize some movies on a Best Of list. He tweeted about 40 times about how the list was bad and indies were bad and people who liked the list were bad. It was weird. He goes into obsessive-compulsive bitchfest rants way too often to be tolerable.
Anyway, more on topic, I'm almost positive that what he talked about in those tweets was reported in gossip columns back then. I wish there was some way to get to some archives that old. I remember not even wanting to see the movie after reading about what a shit Bill Murray was.

You want equality? there you go. If you are in the room with him in your job you are doing pretty well, so just spare us the tears. I don't doubt that he is an asshole. I don't doubt that he berates people and will not hesitate to put someone in their place. I don't even doubt that he has gone over the line and injured some little snowflake who thought they could go complain to the principal. And with that kind of attitude, there is some collateral damage. But still, there is no reason that he should be held to a higher standard. During the period of the class the woman and I got to know each other somewhat. We went to see a movie together and I was invited to her home a couple of times and got to meet her husband. They were very nice decent people. Her Bill Murray incident was the only time I heard her speak with any anger. The star had the right to treat women any way he wanted to. He might verbally berate and humiliate men but he should have tried grinding his dick and balls into them.
As I said this was a number of years ago and I have no reason to doubt what she said.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | April 22, 2022 4:04 PM |
I think what is happening is these 20 year old women aren't used to men who goose, ask to smell their panties, grind on them, etc the way boys and men used to as jokes just a decade ago.
A professor I know will not even lightly joke or flirt with young women or twinks, no matter how hard they try, and it's a bit of a shame really. But that's our culture. It's funny when they wait on us at local restaurants. And I feel bad for them- the fun is gone.
A young woman coming out of college in this very professional era is NOT going to take a Bill Murray or Jeffrey Tambor or Jeff Garlin working blue joke or gesture well...
They don't speak the same language. I'm only in my thirties and we would always tell dirty jokes in school and at the office, some about my sexuality, and I gave as good as I got. (That's what he said.) But that's over now. Antiseptic.

Which makes me suspect that Murray did something worse than usual.

R145 the definition of what constitutes harassment has changed over the years, resulting in the current "looking at me without my consent is literal rape" version we have now. Murray grew up in the earlier environment and he's also a comedian, so he doesn't have a lot of sacred cows already. People don't change much (usually) after a certain point in their lives.
It's like boycotting an old film because it has something in it that is offensive to modern audiences - different time and era.

Yes, today's young women are more confident about calling out straight men out on their shit than previous generations, because they're not only sheltered enough to believe that authority figures will come to their defense... they're totally confident that if they lose a job their parents will be happy to have them move back in!
But this isn't a case of dirty jokes or getting handsy at work, they shut down the whole fucking set - AND they did it without a brewing scandal pushing them to get rid of a liability before the shit hits the fan. So I think Bill did something really bad, like he hit someone, or really mauled some girl. Some people have speculated about a rape, but that seems unlikely on a movie set.

r179 it's considered a form of harassment to stare at a woman. . . . some women may consider that eye-rape. It isn't necessarily wrong either

You are tolerated!'” Dreyfuss recalled. “There was no time to react, because he leaned back and he took a modern glass-blown ashtray. He threw it at my face from (only a couple feet away). And it weighed about three-quarters of a pound.” Dreyfuss said Murray missed his aim. “He tried to hit me. I got up and left.”
Bill Murray hates himself. “Everyone tolerates you” directed at Richard Dreyfus is what he is frightened about himself.

This is not a “very professional era”. This is an era filled with poseurs and ugly, over made up whores.

Yesterday, I was watching the Stayner family documentary on Hulu (see other DL thread about it), and it featured some vintage 70s and 80s news clips. In those clips, the female reporters were all dressed in business suits or wore blazers over their dresses.
These days, some female anchors wear cocktail dresses, even in the winter. Lots of bare arms and low-cut tops. Sometimes, lots of skin flashed during standing shots in front of the weather map. It's like they're in a contest to see who can show the most skin.
But, look at the men. Even in the summer, they're covered head to toe in three-piece suits. The only skin you see is their hands and necks. You won't even see a male reporter wearing a short-sleeved shirt (except for early 2000s Anderson Cooper who wanted to show off his biceps). Never mind a tank top. How come it's not expected or even acceptable for male anchors to show their arms and legs?

R185 they're likely not Gen Xers becsuse I doubt Gen Xers would make as big a deal about it. The stories that have been surfacing are from people who have had encounters with Bill over the years and dealt with it. He may have mellowed with age, even.
When something comes out like this about a celebrity, there is a pile-on that happens as everyone comes out of the woodwork to share their stories, many true, some just for attention/clout. It reaches a natural peak when the celebrity is being shunned and excised from all future projects and people are monstering them, like many posts in this thread about how Murray is trash, the worst human ever, etc. This is the cancellation cycle.
R189 you don't become a comedian if you aren't intelligent, so he's different from Trump in that respect. I think Trump has an innate talent for manipulating people, so he's not stupid, but I don't think he understands or appreciates complexity.

R188, isn’t it a trip to watch these “professional” women dresses like they’re going to a club, while delivering news or the weather?
It’s strange AF.
I’m all about wearing cute outfits that accentuate one’s body, but I’m not EVER going to show up at work, looking like I’m wearing what I wore at the club, the night before.
Call me old fashioned, but if you want to be taken seriously in your field as a woman, please dress PROFESSIONALLY.
I do NOT wanna see your T & A hanging out when you discuss upcoming weather, or when going over details over anything, ESPECIALLY selling me my next home.
Women’ Lib isn’t about dressing like a sycophantic whore to make a sale. It’s about dressing OUTSIDE of the male gaze, in order to do your job successfully. Honestly, I would not be so outraged over it if it were a few neophytes doing this, but this does not appear to be the case.
For some odd reason, women in current times believe they need to look like actual hookers, to get the job done.
I have zero issues with women or men hooking their way into a better life. I understand that this is the way it works for many women. However, you cannot take back your power as a woman, if you appeal to the male gaze, every single time you’re out there making money.
What’s sad is that men WILL give unearned power to women who abide to the structure of the male gaze, rather than to women who are not obsessed with makeup and wardrobes which signify whoredom.
Here’s my take: women should start wearing zero make up and sexually suggestive outfits, and see how far they go in their careers.
Only then, can women see how much bias is bent towards sexual attractiveness, rather than skill.
Sure. Lots of women don’t give a shit, and believe that it’s OK to move up in the world based on sexual attractiveness, yet they fail to understand how this brings all of us down, to a platform where there is little appreciation for intelligence and skill. Women who are beautiful learn this VERY important lesson as they age out.
That’s NOT the time to learn this lesson.
Learn this while you are young and at your peak.
Straight men and even gay men, are idiots. However, they will usually do return business with a woman, if she is a professional who is interested in furthering her career and earning opportunities based on her business acumen, rather than based on her tits and ass. Once the looks fade, and they WILL, those clients are gone.
But guess what?
That’s not the case with women who were all about brains and business from the start. Those women are the ones who retain clientele or business opportunities, long after their looks fade.

There are some idiots who defend Murray on the grounds that a Great Artist has to be indulged, and allowed to break all the rules, as if everyone else on the set wasn't also in the top their field.
Personally, I think that letting actors be totally self-indulgent doesn't result in good performances over the long run, the total professionals like Meryl Streep stay disciplined and behave themselves, while the spoiled brats like Marlon Brando and Johnny Depp become self-indulgent and throw away their talent over time.

If he's done something more serious than hugs / affectionate touches, or yell at a few people - then that's a different matter. Shutting down all production for what has been reported thus far seems extreme, hopefully if there's more to the story we will learn it soon.
by Anonymous | reply 214 | April 25, 2022 1:00 AM |
If production shut down, then it likely reached that point because Murray refused to stop doing whatever he was doing when asked.

[quote]Shutting down all production for what has been reported thus far seems extreme
And what has been reported thus far?
by Anonymous | reply 216 | April 25, 2022 10:48 AM |
Read the thread, r216.
by Anonymous | reply 217 | April 25, 2022 10:51 AM |
R217 I have. And nothing has been reported about what he did on the set of Being Mortal. My question to r215 was obviously rhetorical, to illustrate the stupidity of them saying "Shutting down all production for what has been reported thus far seems extreme" when we don't even know what he did.
by Anonymous | reply 218 | April 25, 2022 10:55 AM |
I'm not surprised...I'm just surprised that it took this long. He always seemed skeevy...a creepy vibe.
by Anonymous | reply 219 | April 25, 2022 11:10 AM |
R218 yes, stupid when it was clearly qualified by "based on what we know thus far", and yes, things have been reported.
by Anonymous | reply 220 | April 25, 2022 11:12 AM |
R220 "Inappropriate behavior" is all that's been reported. We know zero details, and certainly not enough for someone to declare that it wasn't serious enough to shut down production. So yes, very stupid.
by Anonymous | reply 221 | April 25, 2022 11:28 AM |
R221 part of the fun on DL is speculation about things that we don't have all the facts for.
by Anonymous | reply 222 | April 25, 2022 11:32 AM |
R222 That'd just be even stupider. "None of these rumours or speculation are reason for them to shut down production"? Only a blithering idiot would say something that ridiculous.
Stop bullshitting. You thought you read something, did a little googling, realised very quickly you were wrong, that no details from the set have been reported, and are now desperately trying to admit you fucked up.

hi Meryl @ R213.

He molested me.
by Anonymous | reply 226 | April 25, 2022 11:47 AM |
Not just that, he was hailed as a hero and a victim, r209. He was being blackmailed and that was absolutely a crime, but for a while I thought he was going to get a ticker tape parade, everyone was falling over themselves to praise and laud him.
by Anonymous | reply 227 | April 25, 2022 11:49 AM |
Considering the number of lesbians in Hollywood, I can understand his frustration.

I am rolling my eyes at Richard Dreyfuss calling out Bill Murray for anything. I'm written this before, but when Richard Dreyfuss was doing "Whose Life is it Anyway" at Williamstown, he tried to pick up my sister.......who was 15 at the time. She was wearing her long hair in pigtails. And my Mother was with her! And yet, Richard Dreyfuss still did it! His only excuse it that he was probably high on cocaine at the time.....
by Anonymous | reply 229 | April 27, 2022 4:25 AM |
Exactly r229. Does Dreyfuss' son think his father is really any better than Murray? Hypocrites.

[quote] I cannot figure out how David Letterman is well regarded.--It's not just that he slept around, or that he slept around with co-workers, he slept around with people that reported to him and he gave them promotions and raises.---And barely an eyebrow raised

Letterman's blackmailer, Joe Halderman, was bat shit crazy. I knew his sister- SHE Was bat shit crazy. After meeting her, I was completely on Letterman's side. The Halderman family was nasty, grasping, and obsessed with money.
by Anonymous | reply 232 | April 27, 2022 5:03 AM |
Richard Dreyfuss. I know little of him but he seem to be one of the one percent of actors who are straight. I can just tell somehow he is straight.
by Anonymous | reply 233 | April 27, 2022 5:19 AM |
R231 the weird thing is that she is a lawyer.

r230 I can't tell if the son is just a troll if he actually does think he's better than everyone else

I thought everyone does indeed hate Richard Dreyfuss.
by Anonymous | reply 236 | April 27, 2022 11:18 PM |
R235 his son has some disability and is not the typical actor's son, he is also hilarious and has a definite perspective on things. He enjoys tweaking people on Twitter for fun, although I'm sure that story is accurate.
by Anonymous | reply 237 | April 28, 2022 3:18 AM |
I wonder what Richard Dreyfuss's son would say about his Father asking a 15 year old girl out, and in front of her Mother, to boot!
by Anonymous | reply 238 | April 28, 2022 11:16 PM |
And her boss paid for her law school tuition for sleeping with him R234
I can't imagine what it would be like working on that show knowing he's sleeping with multiple female staff who get lots of perks. Great for morale!
by Anonymous | reply 239 | April 29, 2022 3:11 AM |
R238 you should see if he's said anything by searching his Twitter feed! He talks about weird shit all the time.
by Anonymous | reply 240 | April 29, 2022 4:18 AM |
I wonder if things Letterman would have been different if social media was as big as it is today. A lot was out there, though, to include a damning article in VF by a woman that worked on the show, found Letterman and co. to be shoddy.

Bill Murray Speaks Out After ‘Being Mortal’ Set Complaint:
by Anonymous | reply 242 | April 30, 2022 9:57 PM |
Richard Dreyfus and his shithead sons are morons. So eager to cancel Kevin spacey for a knee touch when their old man is a legit pedo.
by Anonymous | reply 243 | April 30, 2022 10:03 PM |
“I did something I thought was funny, and it wasn’t taken that way,” Murray said. “The company, the movie studio, wanted to do the right thing, so they wanted to check it all out, investigate it. and so they stopped the production. But as of now, we’re talking and we’re trying to make peace with each other. I think that’s where the real issue is, between our peace. We’re both professionals. We like each other’s work. We like each other, I think, and if you can’t really get along and trust each other, there’s no point in going further working together or making a movie as well.”
He allowed that he’s been spending the time since production was halted doing not much else beyond thinking about what happened, adding that “It’s been quite an education for me.”
He's just sorry that he is now being held accountable for his behavior. He's long been a menace. I remember some post awards show (maybe Oscars) and he poured alcohol over Marharshala Ali who is a practicing Muslim and does not drink. Even if Ali wasn't Muslim who in their right mind douses someone with alcohol ?

Straight Male Privilege. That’s how Letterman and Bill Murray and Dr. Phil and others skate by.
Cancelling only works on women and gays.

You know what else is straight male privilege? Getting away with unruly eyebrows and craggy skin. It adds “character.” No woman or gay could escape ridicule.

So it's gotta be Keke Palmer who has a problem with Bill. Do we think he was being a lech or racist? Maybe both?

Letterman did not skate by.
by Anonymous | reply 249 | May 1, 2022 2:16 AM |
R249, He did. He gave that little speech on tv and everyone felt for him.
by Anonymous | reply 250 | May 1, 2022 2:55 AM |
How long since Weinstein and Murray still thinks this stuff is funny? He needs time to think about it? Think about fucking what? That you don't molest people? Yeah he needs time to reflect.
by Anonymous | reply 251 | May 1, 2022 3:32 AM |
Does anyone else suspect that maybe Murray was fired, because he was engaged in a power struggle with the director or a producer? This was Aziz Ansari's first time as director, and Murray has made about a bazillion films, and might feel that he knew better than the director what kind of performance he should give, or who was top dog on set. So maybe the director or a producer got into it with Murray, and gave him warnings, and when Murray still did what he wanted to do and not what the hypothetical producer or director told him to do... he was fired!
Which is 100% speculation on my part, but I think it's a plausible scenario that could end with a long-term A-list actor being fired.
by Anonymous | reply 252 | May 1, 2022 5:12 AM |
He hasn't been fired.

r248 Why has it got to be her?
The fact he's a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder makes him even more repulsive.
by Anonymous | reply 254 | May 1, 2022 10:19 AM |
R254 Because he says it's a problem with an actress in the movie and she's really the only actress in it.
by Anonymous | reply 255 | May 1, 2022 1:08 PM |
He didn't say an actress, he said a woman he was working with. Given the post earlier in the thread about how he was harassing crew members I don't think we can automatically assume it was an actress
by Anonymous | reply 256 | May 1, 2022 1:32 PM |
He said he's a long time admirer of her work, so I highly doubt it's crew.
by Anonymous | reply 257 | May 1, 2022 2:13 PM |
Who is Keke Palmer?
by Anonymous | reply 258 | May 1, 2022 5:02 PM |
Clearly he admired her a lot. Maybe he didn't respect her but he's a movie star so he doesn't need to respect anyone. Especially a woman.
by Anonymous | reply 259 | May 1, 2022 8:37 PM |
Sophia Coppola has a story about Bill and ScarJo having a really awkward bad day on set. It seemed really odd, given their age differences and their characters in "Lost in Translation". Then there's what he whispers in her ear at the end, which no one knows.
Now, his wild man in the world catchphrase is "No one will ever believe you." And I've always wondered, in a paranoid, fantasists way, if he didn't do something awful to Scarlett, whisper that threat to her on film, and then spend his life creating an image of a carefree bon-Vivant, using that phrase, just in case he needed to discredit her later on when she gained power...
But I'm pretty crazy.

Nah. Redford, Newman, Michael Caine, Gene Hackman, Robert Duvall, Martin Sheen... Some of the biggest and most powerful were gentlemen. It's really not that hard to not molest women.

R264, all those men are older Murray and right before the boomer generation. I think a lot of the guys of the Baby boom generation reacted to the sexual liberation of the 60s as viewing all women as whores.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | May 2, 2022 1:58 AM |
According to the women I know who were around back then, including my mother and aunts, men were pretty nasty. All the workplace harassment, etc. It was constant. Totally different era, and of course none of that behavior would be tolerated today.

He's undeniably talented, and fascinating on film.
But this is a guy who essentially has no on/off switch, it seems. Hard drinker with few or no boundaries for 40 years. If he's serious about this moment being a real education for him, either (a) he was super deep in his cluelessness before or (b) he realizes he has to do something to cover his ass.
Nobody has told him no for 40 years.
