Part of why what he said was wrong is because she is an Asian actress. In 2000, how many of them were getting cast in lead roles for Blockbusters? She was considered a big deal for becoming a household name and hosting SNL etc.
The next Asian female to host SNL was Awkwafina.

Someone who worked on the film recently tweeted about the incident which is why Liu brought it up again. The person's recollection is that Murray rewrote scenes and put the pages in everyone's trailer leaving the actors and director confused/angry. Murray said he was making the film better, Liu told him he was out of line, he made a crack about her being on TV.
[quote]Basically he’s a diva and Asshole.

Murray is known to improvise a lot, rewrite scenes a lot, and be an all out asshole and diva while on set.
It always bothered me how he wouldn’t stop improvising while filming Ghostbusters, so the writers and director kept cutting back Ernie Hudson’s role to give Murray more screen time.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 28, 2021 11:19 PM |
Maybe their personalities just clashed? I've heard both sides. That he can be difficult but he also can be very kind (especially to the underlings) and generous.
Jane Curtin speaks of him very fondly, and given how blunt and honest she's been about others on SNL, I tend to value her opinion.

R31 - I've never seen Cooper interviewed or followed his career. I guess I was impressed that he's fluent in French. I had to search for the comments. He sounds like a high school jock.
[Quote]That same day, Bradley Cooper emailed Pascal to tell her that “deep tiki is like the greatest movie like ever.”
[Quote]“This has been a very, very, very tough movie here in hawaii.” Two days later, however, the situation was seemingly resolved, with a happy Cooper emailing Pascal to say, “Just wrapped. Got some sick alt or additional ng gilcrest material. I think you will be very happy. Glad it all worked out. I'm heading home thanks to you!!! Thank you. Just wrapped a day that started yesterday at 630am. Holy shit. Be well. Happy holiday. See you soon!! Come on!!”

Yes, Murray probably felt she didn’t belong sitting at the same table as Diaz, Barrymore and himself. He clearly couldn’t stand being forced to share scenes with someone he saw as inferior because she was a Tv actress being thrown in a huge film while he was a movie star, along with Diaz and Barrymore.

Same way George Clooney came across in the hacked emails to Pascal. In the press he was downplayed the reported shooting troubles with "Monuments Men" but in the emails he begged Pascal to protect him in the press. He knew it was a bomb but there was nothing he could do to rectify it.

A famous actress said something back in the 00s that stuck with me. She said, that she never got recognized for her film work but she always got recognized for her TV work. She said that the difference was, she does a movie and she's in the theater for a few months. You see it once. You're done.
She does a TV show and she's in people's homes week after week.
Add into that people staying home more often and the advent of streaming and you have TV rising in importance while studios take less risks on films as box office (outside of superhero movies) slowly diminishes.

To become so rich early in his career is both unjust and undeserved. He never was much good, but he didn't have the decency to become a mainliner and fucking die like Farley or Belushi. He smells like ASS and looks about as bad as you can and still be actively drinking everyday.

The last time I was in NYC before COVID, we were rushing to make a show, and I almost ran her over. The street was really crowded, and she and a dude were rushing toward us, probably also trying to get to a show. We almost collided but I dodged her and said, “Excuse me Lucy Liu!” she flashed a big smile, and then after I passed her I yelled “you look fabulous!” Over her shoulder, she waved and yelled, “thank you baby!” She really did look fabulous; blond highlights and flawless makeup.
So yeah, that’s my Lucy Liu story.

Murray didn’t even really want to do the movie. He turned it down multiple times, but the studio desperately wanted him and kept throwing money at him until it became impossible to say no. Drew and Cameron were involved early on, but Lucy was a late addition. They originally wanted Angelina Jolie who turned it down and then offered it to a bunch of other actresses (including Thandie Newton, mentioned upthread) before finally landing on Lucy, who got the role after heavily campaigning for it. Between Murray not really wanting to be there and Lucy being a perceived also ran who was desperate to be there, it’s not surprising they clashed.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | July 29, 2021 3:32 AM |
Oh and the script went through an unheard of number of changes. Literally the entire thing was being written and rewritten on the fly. I think the original premise had something to do with the angels going undercover as models because someone was kidnapping models to clone them. Drew was also a very hands on producer and insisted on the angels not carrying guns and being shown with healthy eating habits (hence the random scene at the drive through). Given the chaos behind the scenes and number of cooks in the kitchen, it’s actually shocking the final product was as good as it was.

It's subjective, not factual. Since he only said it because he was having a temper tantrum, it's not particularly convincing, either.
I notice in the story with Anjelica Huston that he later said hi to her in a friendly way and that he'd missed her, and she said no, you didn't miss me, and he looked confused. He's either trying to play mind games with people or he's got some kind of personality disorder. Neither makes him seem pleasant to be around.

I love the fact that he wasn't asked back for the sequel. He probably didn't want to do it anyway but the fact that they supported her and not him in the end was great.

My granny used to keep a list of the ugliest men in showbizness. It was a mental list that she would bring up from time to time. On it were Bill Murray, Larry King, Buddy Hackett and Yasser Arafat. Shortly before she died she added OLD Bill Cosby and Angela Lansbury. RIP granny. You were the greatest.
Bill Murray is still UGLY.

I don’t think they cared what the race of the third Angel was. They auditioned all types of women for the third Angel.
Liu got it last minute after Newton dropped out.

Yeah, I think his anger management issues are based on him being a moody drunk. He's unstable when he's drunk, and he's unstable when he's trying to stay sober. Well, maybe it's not just the alcohol then.

Makes me love Bill more. I never liked Lucy .
by Anonymous | reply 115 | July 31, 2021 6:10 AM |
I loved the girls in CA. That stupid woke version from a year ago sucked. Note to Hollywood: don’t diversify a cast unless it’s organic. Kristen Stewart makes me uncomfortable.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | July 31, 2021 7:01 AM |
murray ruined a play in LA yrs ago by sitting in the rear, drunk, abusive, yelling incoherently till he was booed out of the audience.
major creep

R116 so an Asian isn’t being diverse? Lucy Liu is Asian, a completely different race than the other two.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | July 31, 2021 10:27 AM |
I kind of liked the new CA movie and thought the idea of multiple Bosleys was genius and I liked Ella Balinska. Patrick Stewart was great in the little role he had, so was Sam Clafin as comic relief villain. However, that image of Kristen Stewart shoeless in that helicopter flying away at the beginning traumatized me. That was probably the ugliest and trashiest she looked in a movie. I liked
by Anonymous | reply 119 | July 31, 2021 12:34 PM |
It sounds like he can be fine when he isn't drunk...but over the years, those sober intervals have grown shorter and fewer.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | July 31, 2021 12:44 PM |
The new movie was actually good, but the Angels were miscast.
Ella was the best of the three but she was also an unknown.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | July 31, 2021 1:05 PM |
They included the multiple Bosley’s as a way to answer the question as to why Bosley was suddenly someone else in the 00s CA movies. People always asked why Bosley was suddenly Bernie Mac.
My sister hated that the Angels never acknowledged that Bosley suddenly looked different. She always said they could have had a throwaway line in there that at least acknowledged he was now a new person, especially because he was black now lol
by Anonymous | reply 122 | July 31, 2021 1:10 PM |
I think Lucy is a good actress. Great on Ally McBeal and Elementary.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | July 31, 2021 2:22 PM |
Him losing the Oscar to Penn was everything you need to know about Murray. One of the industries biggest assholes. The look on his face was priceless when Sean is announced. He actually thought he had a shot beating Penn. If anyone was going to upset Penn it would’ve been Depp, who won the SAG award. Murray’s shitty behavior over the years made the voters flock to the other nominees.

[quote] My sister hated that the Angels never acknowledged that Bosley suddenly looked different. She always said they could have had a throwaway line in there that at least acknowledged he was now a new person, especially because he was black now lol
They did. Bernie Mac was supposed to be Bill Murray’s brother. When Bernie goes home his mom (also black) makes reference to the white child she adopted and then the camera pans to a picture of Bill Murray on the wall.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | July 31, 2021 3:02 PM |
Didn’t Murray also walk out of the ceremony after losing and publicly say he never would have gone if he’d known he wouldn’t win?
by Anonymous | reply 126 | July 31, 2021 3:04 PM |
R126 yes. He really thought he was gonna win.
It reminded me of when Leo boycotted the 1998 Oscars because he didn’t get nominated for Lead Actor in Titanic.

[quote] I love the fact that he wasn't asked back for the sequel. He probably didn't want to do it anyway
No, he didn’t. And he was pretty upfront about that. In addition to Lucy, he also clashed with McG supposedly. Tbh, I’m shocked he even agreed to let them use his photo in the sequel given his reputation.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | July 31, 2021 3:09 PM |
Lady Gaga also stormed out of the Grammys the year Adele swept for 21 and she lost her many nominations for Born This Way. After Adele won Album of the Year she got up and stormed out, throwing a fit. She thought she for sure had record, song and album of the year in the bag.
Meanwhile Katy Perry, also nominated for a shit ton of awards for Teenage Dream lost everything too and didn’t act like that.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | July 31, 2021 3:09 PM |
He didn’t wanna do the first one either. He did it for the pay they gave him.
A sequel wasn’t even an option for him, no matter the pay after clashing with the director, some of the other crew and Lucy.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | July 31, 2021 3:10 PM |

Murphy was the front runner, having bagged the SAG and globe. Norbit opened during the voting period, and reminded voters how many shitty paycheck films Murphy had done. When you take the easy way out, doing many popcorn films for coin, it rubs a lot of the voters the wrong way as being greedy. Arkin kept hearing all over town Oscar weekend from voters that they were voting for him.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | July 31, 2021 5:02 PM |
Yes, I heard that Norbit hurt Murphy’s chances of winning.
Stupid reason to not wanna vote for someone though. I am voting for your performance in DreamGirls, not all the shitty movies you made.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | July 31, 2021 5:05 PM |
R141 it if was strictly performance driven, the Oscars would be completely different. Hopkins win this year for The Father is the exception rather than the norm. It’s always been part popularity contest, part promotion, part overdue factor, part performance,
by Anonymous | reply 142 | July 31, 2021 5:12 PM |
Once in a while it’s a performance Oscar.

I think the drugs and Lorne Michaels did a number on quite a lot of SNL comedians during the early years of the show. How Lorne is still allowed to run any show after all the lives he ruined (by providing a toxic and drug fueled work environment)?
by Anonymous | reply 149 | July 31, 2021 6:07 PM |
You think they were on drugs because of Lorne? It was the fucking 70s and they were in NYC and found new success. Cocaine was a part of life for those types back then, especially in show biz.

by Anonymous | reply 152 | July 31, 2021 6:36 PM |
Eddie Murphy didn't lose because of Norbit, (no academy voter would have wasted their time seeing it). Murphy lost because right after the ballots were sent to members for voting, he publicly (and very nastily) trashed the Spice Girl he had been dating when she announced her pregnancy. He really shot himself in the foot....Very similar to years previous when Russell Crowe fucked up his chance for a second oscar for A Beautiful Mind.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | July 31, 2021 6:41 PM |
R153 links? I’ve never heard of any such a thing. And voters don’t need to see a shitty movie to recognize one.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | July 31, 2021 6:48 PM |
The Norbit rumor has been around for years, as well as the fact his ego and attitude turned off many voters. He was supposedly a massive diva and asshole, and many voters said they would not vote for him after meeting him.
The Mel B shit is new to me.

I remember reading a story about him and how he treated/mistreated interns. The tenor of the story was how fun it was to bark at them and then watch them run and scurry on pointless errands. To be fair, this was just about Murray, but why anyone would find it fun and funny to be so awful to those who cannot fight back is beyond me. This isn't just 2021 talking -- that was always a shitty (though "normal") thing to do.
The reason it resonates is that Murray may buy into this game of harassing those less powerful than you, and at least Liu stood up for herself. The only way to fight back is to call bastards out. It's interesting how sometimes the victims will wait a long time to do so. Mercedes McCambridge held her tongue for years about Joan Crawford and only talked about her mistreatment when Crawford was either no longer powerful enough to damage McCambridge's career or was dead.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | July 31, 2021 7:29 PM |
R158 Didnt Mercedes and Joan fight like hell on the set and Mercedes called her on her bs. That’s the way I always heard it.

“When you think that you want to become rich and famous, try just rich first.”
by Anonymous | reply 163 | July 31, 2021 9:29 PM |
Eddie Murphy is a true comic genius and very good actor. They didn't have to award him for DreamGirls. Like Midler and Garland - he is not that well liked by the people who vote. And hell yes he has a kid with Mel B. She's greedy and nuts as fuck and Eddie made the mistake of saying so. Ooops.
Bill Murray is a monumentally lesser talent. He's the same line reading and two expressions. Over and over. Not much of an actor. Like so many from SNL he is an attitude posing as something more. Bill Murray is mostly forgotten. He's painful to look at. Lucy Liu still works. Radiant woman.

Most comedians are arseholes - they just get a pass because they're (usually) funny.
There are some stories about Murray being charming, but they are far outweighed by the ones where he was a diva cunt. People seems to associate his 'Don't give a shit' attitude with endearing eccentricity, but it's more a case of hating those around him and having no respect for anyone but himself.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | August 1, 2021 4:28 AM |
Eddie Murphy was fantastic in 'Bowfinger' - I think he mostly got lazy and just chose bad films for the easy paycheck.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | August 1, 2021 4:29 AM |
Sean Penn has given some great performances but Mystic River is not one of them - at all. Yes, Murray would have been a more deserving winner (and I’m guessing there were a few overlooked performances that year that were more deserving altogether). And his Globes acceptance speech was great.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | August 1, 2021 4:30 AM |
Eddie Murphy in his dual role in Bowfinger is one of the greatest comedic film performances of all time. Truth.
