Someone who worked on the film recently tweeted about the incident which is why Liu brought it up again. The person's recollection is that Murray rewrote scenes and put the pages in everyone's trailer leaving the actors and director confused/angry. Murray said he was making the film better, Liu told him he was out of line, he made a crack about her being on TV.

The last time I was in NYC before COVID, we were rushing to make a show, and I almost ran her over. The street was really crowded, and she and a dude were rushing toward us, probably also trying to get to a show. We almost collided but I dodged her and said, “Excuse me Lucy Liu!” she flashed a big smile, and then after I passed her I yelled “you look fabulous!” Over her shoulder, she waved and yelled, “thank you baby!” She really did look fabulous; blond highlights and flawless makeup.

Regarding the differing stories about Murray he sounds like one of those " hot cold hot cold" personality types. They can be extraordinarily unpleasant and difficult, even more so than consistent assholes. Because you never know what the fuck you're going to get.

Murray didn’t even really want to do the movie. He turned it down multiple times, but the studio desperately wanted him and kept throwing money at him until it became impossible to say no. Drew and Cameron were involved early on, but Lucy was a late addition. They originally wanted Angelina Jolie who turned it down and then offered it to a bunch of other actresses (including Thandie Newton, mentioned upthread) before finally landing on Lucy, who got the role after heavily campaigning for it. Between Murray not really wanting to be there and Lucy being a perceived also ran who was desperate to be there, it’s not surprising they clashed.

Oh and the script went through an unheard of number of changes. Literally the entire thing was being written and rewritten on the fly. I think the original premise had something to do with the angels going undercover as models because someone was kidnapping models to clone them. Drew was also a very hands on producer and insisted on the angels not carrying guns and being shown with healthy eating habits (hence the random scene at the drive through). Given the chaos behind the scenes and number of cooks in the kitchen, it’s actually shocking the final product was as good as it was.

Lucy Liu did multiple episodes of Joey, so clearly Matt LeBlanc thought she was fine to work with.

Eddie Murphy is a true comic genius and very good actor. They didn't have to award him for DreamGirls. Like Midler and Garland - he is not that well liked by the people who vote. And hell yes he has a kid with Mel B. She's greedy and nuts as fuck and Eddie made the mistake of saying so. Ooops.

Bill Murray is a monumentally lesser talent. He's the same line reading and two expressions. Over and over. Not much of an actor. Like so many from SNL he is an attitude posing as something more. Bill Murray is mostly forgotten. He's painful to look at. Lucy Liu still works. Radiant woman.

I golfed in the vicinity of Murray several times and he's such an ass.

I've talked to Lucy maybe twice and always was a wonderful experience. She's so funny and hot as hell.

Most comedians are arseholes - they just get a pass because they're (usually) funny.

There are some stories about Murray being charming, but they are far outweighed by the ones where he was a diva cunt. People seems to associate his 'Don't give a shit' attitude with endearing eccentricity, but it's more a case of hating those around him and having no respect for anyone but himself.

Eddie Murphy was fantastic in 'Bowfinger' - I think he mostly got lazy and just chose bad films for the easy paycheck.

Sean Penn has given some great performances but Mystic River is not one of them - at all. Yes, Murray would have been a more deserving winner (and I’m guessing there were a few overlooked performances that year that were more deserving altogether). And his Globes acceptance speech was great.

Eddie Murphy in his dual role in Bowfinger is one of the greatest comedic film performances of all time. Truth.

Bowfinger seems like a forgotten movie. I enjoyed it when it came out, but I haven’t seen it since.

It's still good - I rewatched it the other day and it has stood up pretty well.

After hearing what Bill Murray's ex-wife said he was like, and after hearing how he treated Harold Ramis, a guy who was pivotal in Murray's rise to stardom, I'm convince Bill's a major prick. He's still funny though. Most really great comedians are problematic human beings; they can be very damaged people, comedians.
