Michael Musto has lived in that Murray Hill apartment for *years*. At one point IIRC his elderly mother lived with him as well.
IIRC like many others MM found this apartment via a broker, but since he moved in around 2010 or so rent likely was reasonable, and unit may even be under rent regulation.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 11, 2022 4:07 AM |
Wait, take last bit back; MM bought his apartment in Murray Hill years ago....
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 11, 2022 4:09 AM |
R26 et al
Michael Musto likely never could afford to buy in West or Greenwich Village.
IIRC he was living in either WV or GV in a one bedroom apartment that wasn't perfect, but suited; then came a huge rent increase so he decided to find something to buy. This was sometime in 2000's or around 2010, by that time both WV and GV like rest of Manhattan below 23rd street had taken off RE wise.

Pretty standard building like so many others that went up in NYC in late 1950's through 1970's into 1980's. Entire building is nothing but studios, alcove studios, and one bedrooms, sort of building largely developed to house young singles or maybe a newly married couple without children.
This property being in midtown makes it a convenient place to live for anyone working in area, or even bit further east such as United Nations. Subway is few blocks away at Park Avenue South and 33rd street.
Know many people (as sure other NYers on DL do as well) that live in same sort of apartment. Know a few that moved in back in 1970's or 1980's and never left.
As for décor, girls lighten up! Not every gay is some sort of interior decorator Mary. Nor keeps house like Hazel for that matter either. If MM is a slob, he's a slob. Hardly only one in NYC or USA for that matter.

Hardly one of our more exclusive co-ops...

No wonder this building is saved by so many Streeteasy users, and apartments seemingly sell rather quickly once listed. It may not be this building, but other co-ops in area have seen a flood lately of parents of international students (in particular NYU), buying apartments for their children

My office is not too far from there and I have seen him riding his bike around the neighborhood for decades... So I kind of figured he lived in a boring postwar cookie cutter apartment but I could not have imagined it would be so poorly kept. Particularly since he seems to own it.. NYC apartments need to be painted every 5 years or so and certainly at least once in 10 years... his walls look filthy and have all kinds of blemishes from things he's moved around... Even his "desk" looks filthy... And even the Mac computer they show for a few seconds... filthy. He needs a renovation in there! And then a regular cleaning person.

He does remind me of one of those zany old Benson & Hedges smoking queens who used to have junky little kitsch shops in gay neighborhoods in the 1980s.
Alternately haughty and flirty, they would run a nonstop commentary on anything your eye paused on for so much as a millisecond, punctuated with a frequent "ha!," Phyllis Diller style. "I think Judy Garland had one of those! Ha! Maybe it's the very one." For all the old glamor magazines and Hollywood allusions it was just a shop packed to the gills with tatty, dirty old shit in bad nick and it all smelled funny, bad funny. The deck of cards was missing two queens, the rattan wrapped caddy of six Atomic Age glass tumblers was down to five...
They had an eye for cheap kitsch but no eye for beauty, quality, or condition. A sexier, butcher bunch of sales bottoms replaced then, and replaced their wares with Mid-Century Modern with a small helping of connoisseurship in place of the Borscht Belt Gay monologue.

No, it's classic movie or television depictions of NYC. You know, a filthy front door to show how gritty living in the city is.
For christs sake, a wet rag or sponge every once in a while could take care of it. If you have a door like that, you're a slob, not necessarily a typical New Yorker.

Not only did he buy it, he paid 570K for it in 2008. So he overpaid (only slightly...an apartment in the same line but 5 floors up went for almost 20k less 5 months later) but the real crime is that he's been there for 14 years and this is what he's done with the space.

MM did not live in this apartment until late 2000's, he bought sometime around 2008-2010 after a huge rent hike in his previous West Village (?) apartment.
As for walls needing painting and other major redecorating many New Yorkers who were life long renters (especially those from rent regulated housing), where landlords are required by law to repaint every three years act quite differently once they own (apartment or private home).
In such situations either you do the job yourself, or hire a contractor, and good painters in NYC don't come cheap nowadays. If you want anyone else but a bunch of slop artists (usually illegal alien day labor) fresh daily from Home Depot or Lowes parking lot, it will cost a pretty penny. With on going construction boom in city, and people buying several million dollar apartments or homes, top contractors have their pick of work, and usually are turning down "small" jobs.
Have known MM since club kid days, and he's never struck one has ever being very well off. More like bulk of poor slobs in NYC, busting his chops to earn enough money so can live here more like.
Has it not occurred to some of you that MM is happy not wanting what he hasn't got? At least he owns his apartment, which puts him in a better position than many others in NYC were huge percentage of households are renters until day they die.

by Anonymous | reply 108 | April 11, 2022 9:46 PM |
Another thing, MM's career or just even finding work has been up and down over past decade or so.
Like many other tale end Boomers he's been downsized, let go, fired, or otherwise lost stable jobs as industry he works in has undergone tremendous changes.
We're not talking about some serious Pulitzer prize winning journalist or writer here, but a basically a gossip columnist and "personality" if you will.

Hopefully MM has been socking money away, and that would be very smart thing to do.
When you get down to it that apartment of elder gay living in Chelsea (Penn South), isn't that much different than MM's. His walls could do with bit of paint and so forth, but the guy has tons of stuff in his place which I guess cuts some slack with DL.
Another thing, as people get old often their housekeeping tends to slack off a bit. Those lucky enough to afford someone to come in at least once a week or every other are better off. Others faced with daily grind of doing such work themselves usually, well don't.....

Oh please, R113. He's 66 not 86. He doesn't need a housekeeper to wipe clean his VCR and computer, especially if he knows his place is going to be filmed. He obviously doesn't care.

He said that cheap ass mirrored table was from Value Village,so hes not allergic to thrifts .I just dont get how very bland and pedestrian it is.You'd think a retired bus driver lived there. I get that some people dont like "things" but at his age you'd think he would have just acquired crap by proxy. I like him,I always have, but Im sorry, his apt made me sad for him.

He spent a lifetime in nasty clubs, dive bars, and cheapo restaurants. Really this doesn't surprise me. I agree with above - he is safe and secure so there's that. Did you ever see how downtown demi-mondaine marginals live in their dottage? Often not all that different than at 25, but the grime accumulates, as do the worthless "treasures". Sometimes it's grisly. Rinse repeat in other great cities.

God you bitches are so snooty. It’s a fairly normal NYC apartment and it’s done in typical queeny, kitschy fashion with lots of chatchkas and stuff that is not my thing but he seems happy . I like it ,it’s cosy and down to earth. I like the white couch with the lash picture. MM and RuPaul know each other as club kids and those around that scene at same time are wont to do; but don't think he's anywhere near friendly enough to reach out to Rue for a touch. Even Lady Bunny wouldn't dare, and they've been frienemies for years.

MM wrote about club kids in 1980's and certainly attended events or clubs where they worked/hung out. He was at things such as Disco 2000, Suzanne Bartsch parties, etc....
MM was not exactly what one would call a club person, he seemed to attend things more as part of what he did for a living than anything else. Like other famous (or infamous) gossip columnists MM would be at a table with everyone who mattered, but again IMHO just didn't seem into things as rest.
You DL queens need to make up your minds. In one thread are saying 1980's was when MM was at or near his peak. Now are saying he is or was totally ignorant or at least didn't know well one of the hottest and happening scene of people of 1980's (the club kids).

club kids didn't hit their stride until early 90s. The murder was 1996. I was partying in the East Village in the 80s with all the drags and even the early 80s art stars and performance artists were around, dying off each year. I knew them all from 1980 scene. Every 5 years there was a major shift in what was going on, it seemed. I danced in my tightie whities on the bar at Pyramid and a young but already downtown Famous RuPaul make a crack that good thing I had a pretty face (not a lot of junk in my trunks). Hahaha. He might have "bought" it 2008, but if he has a 30 year mortgage as most people do, he's still paying for it. And who keeps saying he was loaded? It's easy, EASY, to pick up a paintbrush, get some decent furniture, break up the room into sections with one or two nice area rugs and wall art, end tables and a pair of lamps, or a cool corner lamp that extents overhead into the room. Was there a coffee table? Maybe a pair of small, swivel club chairs. Showcase the one window with some decent drapes. Big effing deal!
Plenty of men Michael Musto's age do not know how to type. Females are another story, tail end Boomer girls would have been last steered into secretarial courses in high school. That and their lot employment wise likely depended upon knowing how to type with high speed and accuracy.
Plenty of men then and still today cannot type, and use "hunt and peck" to get things done. This includes famous journalists and writers alive and dead.
Yes, some guys too typing (along with even steno) courses in high school, but they were in minority.
If MM's two finger typing offends, then suggest not looking at any young person today rapidly "typing" away on their phone using two thumbs only.

I lived in Mississippi for years and know a couple of people who went to NYC and did better than Musto. It can't be that hard. I think it must depend on your ability to stomach rats and roaches.

That may be your point, r212, but I wasn't talking about your personal opinion, and it's weird that you think I was. I was agreeing with r141 and talking about multiple people in two different threads and how DL, as a whole, is inconsistent.

Like another tasteful friends (Antiques Roadshow appraiser) recently featured on here, I would never place the decor to the person. Well....he has a lot of stuff, but it's not extreme hoarding.....and it's organized and neat. It's surprising and interesting what famous people like and how they live.

It's weird that you take DL so seriously.
[quote] Here, they're saying he's famous and well-connected and must have plenty of resources after all these years, so there's no excuse for his apartment.
Why would he have to be famous and well-connected and have plenty of resources to have a better looking, better furnished apartment? He doesn't. We're not criticizing the size of the apartment or where it is but the cheap, junky stuff he has in it. It looks so shabby and humble and dirty.

[quote]Wrong! You forget about bragging rights.
[quote]You go on vacation, let’s say a cruise. You tell people you are from New York City. Instantly, you become the most interesting person in the room.
No, I've know many interesting New Yorkers, none however was ever interesting for having escaped from Hooterville and "made it" in New York, nor for the accident of birth that made him "a native New Yorker."
Too many New Yorkers think that merely being a New Yorker makes them interesting or specially qualified. Living there may provide interesting fodder for interesting people, living there may open opportunities to become more interesting, but it's only a partial list of recipe ingredients.
Would you be excited if you met someone who said with great emphasis, "I'm a *native* Floridian!" or "I live in Florida!" No. NYC isn't special that way either, it's a more interesting place, yes, but it doesn't bestow interest on its residents with an apartment lease or a deed.

Miss Ghurl please! Transplants from flyover country would consider themselves lucky to land a one bedroom like MM's.
In today's NYC rental market that place would easily go for >$3k per month (market rate unit).
Those living in rent regulated, public housing or other subsidized housing likely are paying far less, and won't be leaving unless in a box feet first out of front door.
Myself and others know New Yorkers who live in one bedroom or studio units similar to Mr. Musto's, and his is remarkably clean and well decorated in comparison.

He needs a hug, and a cleaning crew, and some interior decorating advice. I know Datalounge is mean, but this man is a treasure, he has great blind items, it's his bread and butter, and the butter has run out. "Curtains": Mon Dieu. That was the worst part of the entire "decor." Looked like bed sheets, as mentioned above. But it also looked like he was using shower curtain rings to attach the cloth to the rod. As a friend, I would intervene on those curtains.
Dreary.
His work / computer area needs some TLC. He must spend hours there and it looks so uninviting and sad. Looks like he types with 2 fingers as well.

Tons of elderly men and women both gay and straight live in "hovels" all over NYC. People move into rent regulated, SRO, or other such digs and never leave. Worse over years their apartments become filled with stuff that they won't throw out, yet keep bringing in more. Cleaning is rare or not really done for various reason including frail health or whatever.
As someone stated in thread previously, speak with visiting nurses, cable or telephone installers/service people, social workers, FDNY, NYPD, and some others about state of apartments they've been in for various reasons.

I once managed a run down old hotel that had converted to weekly/monthly rentals. The rooms were roomy, but nasty as fuck because of decades of deferred maintenance . This was the mid 90s and some of those old people had been there since it converted in 1972. I had the misfortune of having to clean out their rooms after they died or went into care and were never coming back. They had decades of crap shoved everywhere. I can’t believe that over the course of 50 years he didn’t cosy up to several interior decorators to help him sort the place out. Even now he’s something of a ‘name’, and 20 years ago any number of up and coming to established designers would have helped him out.
I guess he just loves his shitty taste as much as he loves himself. That combination causes blindness.
by Anonymous | reply 346 | April 13, 2022 10:57 PM |
I agree, R346. Musto likes cheap, junky and grimy. He could have done better without spending much money. That's his taste.
by Anonymous | reply 347 | April 13, 2022 10:59 PM |
MM didn’t take advantage of the opportunities he could have had. He should have had his own celebrity gossip website when celebrity gossip blogs took off in the early 2000’s. He could have made so much more.

[quote]Honestly, had he no friends to help him?
Like many people, Crisp was probably too proud to accept help. He probably didn't want people coming over to his place and looking around with a look of dismay on their faces.
He wasn't too proud to accept help with food. They said he was only too happy to be invited to a restaurant if the other person would pay the entire bill.
by Anonymous | reply 349 | April 13, 2022 11:06 PM |
By DL standards Quentin Crisp was a lazy slob and slovenly housekeeper. He lived surrounded by filth and was proud of that fact.
These two quotes tell all one needs to know...
“There is no need to do any housework at all. After the first four years the dirt doesn't get any worse.”
and
'IF you live in squalor, you have to have order,'
by Anonymous | reply 350 | April 13, 2022 11:12 PM |

Except... dirty. I'm a slob myself but I keep my place cleaner than that. If I was having somebody over to actually take photos of my home that would actually be published where strangers would see them I'd clean the everloving fuck out of everything, and then clean it again.

Michael does provide some fun wit here and there, but he doesn’t have any real “celebrity connections” when it comes to stylish friends or designers at this point in his life. That apartment is just a drab, typical midtown East condo-casket, ya bought it, it’s your Manhattan coffin. The eldergays all get found dead on the kitchen floor, two hours later the super throws out the Playbills and Baby dolls. Musto actually smells nice, but should def see a dentist and soon!

All of you blathering on as if MM was some sort of star television journalist or reporter like Anderson Cooper just don't have a clue.
As stated numerous times in this thread guy likely never made huge sums. MM made some money obviously because he bought that apartment. But looking at the rules they let anyone with pulse and bank account buy into that building.
Old Village Voice was a union shop, so reporters and others did well enough compensation wise I suppose. Not huge money, but compared to other weeklies it was decent. But that outfit folded years ago

When someone dies alone in a NYC apartment unless there is a spouse or other legal tenants, place will be sealed until next of kin/probate is settled. Neither landlord nor anyone else can enter said premises without explict consent of the courts.
NYT did a piece some time back on the not too rare occurrence of someone dying in their apartment or home, and what happens afterwards.
Even if death takes place in hospital or anywhere else, same process pretty much plays out once LE and city become aware of demise.
As to things being thrown out, it happens all the time in NYC. Have seen families of deceased clear out an apartment by taking very little (if anything) for themselves, then telling LL or super of building to bag and throw everything that remains out with trash. One huge perk for building supers is they get first dibs on such things. Usually anything nice or of obvious value rarely makes it to the curb.
Given his single elder gay status, and fact MM does have an estate (royalties from his books, that apartment, etc...), am more than unusually sure he likely has made a will, and his cherished dolls will be going somewhere after he dies. That is if he isn't so hard up later in life they are sold for ready money, or he's forced to downsize if say goes into a care home.
by Anonymous | reply 402 | April 18, 2022 5:28 AM |
Back in day savvy New Yorkers looking for inexpensive rental (hopefully rent stabilized) apartment would scan obituaries to see when a vacancy may have occurred. This and before deceased was in ground good hit up super of building for inside track information.

The problem with the Manhattan Coffin is that when they have a pet like a dog, at some point the dog eats the dead owner out of desperation. This actually happens a lot. A friend of mine had a neighbor drop dead like that in his own unit, people heard the dog barking but no one checked on the guy for two weeks. By then both were dead but a significant amount of the man was eaten by the dog before it died of dehydration.

I grew up very poor, in a house with rats and roaches and holes in the ceiling. Didn't have food to take to school most days, would eat cereal with a fork so we could save the milk, only one school uniform. I'm not being funny but our house still looked about the same as this, perhaps even nicer if we cleaned it (and it was about the same size).
He probably wouldn't throw away all the junk (though it does reveal him as being quite tasteless), but why can't he go over some of the surfaces with a good wipe down? The computer looks filthy.

The thing I would find even sadder than if he has been reduced to near poverty would be if he still has loads of money and actually chooses to live like that. Most real writers have dirty/worn computers or laptops (or typewriters). And their work stations are pretty chaotic.
If a writer has a pristine, top of the line laptop kept perfectly clean and in order, chances are they’re not a very good writer.

Musto likely bought the place 15-20 years ago when postwar cookie-cutter one bedroom apartments were selling for between $200K-300K. His mother likely gave him the down payment too. A lot of NYC Nightlife People live in far more basic places than you'd expect them to.
It does look like a college apartment, that couch in particular looks really uncomfortable, not the sort of thing you' would crash out on and watch TV.
There were no rugs either, which is the thing I found most odd-- you'd want them for practical reasons--floors are cold in the winter. Plus there's a law in NYC about having to cover a certain percentage of your floors so your neighbors don't hear you clomping around.
The building and neighborhood are fine for what they are--as someone noted upthread, it is all studios and one bedrooms, so mostly single people or young couples. Probably some empty nesters too.
Murray Hill south of 34th is sort of a giant Jewish Post-Collegiate Dorm. Shout out "OhMyGawd! Did you go to Syracuse?" in any (hetero) bar around there and half the room will turn around, but it is as Musto says --not a destination on weekends and so sort of quiet, yet convenient to just about everything.
And yes, I have no idea why he thought doing that video was a good idea.

That's pure bull shit Circa 1950. I have worked in creative offices with computers for over 20 years. Most creatives are very particular about their work space. If anything they are over cluttered with collectables. But even that's died out. Minimal clean spaces are the norm these days for most creative types.
