This makes me sad! I loved her as Kim on ATWT. I thought she was so beautiful.
My favorite storyline of hers was when she got conked in the head during a tornado and lost her memory just before she was about to divorce John Dixon and marry Dan, then John manipulated her into believing they still loved each other.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 8, 2022 3:28 PM |

She actually called me both "toots" and "kiddo" once. I was working in a bookstore in 1990, and who pulls up to my register but Kathy Hays. She could tell I recognized her, and said "Hello, how are you?" [CRYING AS I TYPE] I told her I was fine, and that it was just so exciting to see her, and could she please just call me "kiddo"?
And she did. "How much is that, kiddo?" I told her, and she handed me her credit card, which I rang through, and handed her her books. I said "You have a good rest of your day, Ms. Hays." And she responded, "Same to you, Toots." [STILL IN TEARS]

They did auction her stuff a few years back. Kathy moved from NYC to Illinois for about a year, and apparently even with the help of her niece or cousin she was failing, so they moved her to a facility in CT.
I think all things considered with COVID, etc. it wasn't a super long delay for the announcement of her death. They probably wanted to make sure things were in order before the announcement.

I loved watching ATWT during its creative 'heyday' in the mid to late 80s. A great show.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 8, 2022 6:57 PM |
I feel a bit bad for Kathryn Hays because she has a beautiful voice and her goal was to be a musical theater diva
But every Broadway musical she was in either closed out of town or she was fired during previews.
She had to find peace within herself to be known for ATWT than a musical star.

R19 Packing everything up, moving it to the East Coast, and storing it would not only be a daunting project, but costly. .. Having had to take care of three elderly relatives' "stuff," collected over the course of their lifetimes, I would greatly recommend that, if they have to go into care, then relatives do whatever they can to downsize it all before they actually pass to the great beyond.

I think she did even better a few years later, during Andy's drunken teen years and messy relationship with Julie. Bryggman and Hastings were also excellent.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | April 9, 2022 2:54 PM |
For my money, Hays' finest work (of what I saw, mid 80s until show end) was her dealing with the aftermath of the affair with Susan.
And yes, the Cummings mystery. And when Sabrina was found.
But even during the end, she was turning in great performances. This was a scene with Katie, who was involved with Chris at the end. Kim manages to tell her "I adore you, but bitch, I will cut you if you fuck up my son's recovery." It's FABULOUS.

KH was so basic. She was never THE FACE of ATWT. That honor belonged at various times to Rosemary Prinz, Eileen Fulton, Martha Byrne, Liz Hubbard, and Maura West, but never to KH. KH always blended into the wallpaper, was kind of just there, if you get my drift. Mostly yawn inducing. She was ATWT's Maureen Bauer.

Kim WAS the face of ATWT in the 70s, wasn’t she? After Irna Phillips died in 1973, and until the Dobsons arrived in 1980, she was the lead heroine of the show.

Don Hastings had a comment that was in the original reports on TVLine, etc.
[quote] In a statement, ATWT scene partner Don Hastings said, “Our relationship as Bob and Kim was as close as Kathryn and my relationship, except we were not married. We were more like brother and sister and we were great friends. Our biggest squabble was that she always wanted to rehearse and I wanted to take a nap. This is a huge loss to all who knew her.”
Nothing from CZP yet. A whole bunch of responses are upthread.

Don seemed to be genuinely happy to see her in the Locher Room reunion and I have no doubt his comment(s) are genuine, but from what gossip has been shared here and other places, there were times he and Hays didn't get along as well.
I suppose that's probably true of most actors who are paired up in a long term coupling like that.

I loved Kathryn Hays. She was one of the anchors of the show. Unlike Fulton, the writers used her often when appropriate. Even as she matured, she got some great storylines, like the Doug Cummings mystery and the Kim/Bob/Susan triangle. She definitely deserved to be nominated for her work after Kim discovered Bob's affair with Susan ...you could really feel her pain. I loved how Hays and Masters always had that hatred simmering in their scenes , even when the scene had nothing to do with their past.
Thanks to those who posted some of the great Kim/Susan scenes. I've been trying to find the one where Kim, Bob and Chris are having lunch in a diner, and Susan stumbles upon them, and the fur flies.

Kim Hughes, 87, of Oakdale died on March 25, 2022. She was a longtime media figure in Oakdale, as part owner of WOAK, and appeared on her own talk show, Patterns, for many years. She was also known to many as a singer.
In addition to her husband Dr. Bob Hughes, she is survived by her children, Sabrina Fullerton, Andy Dixon and Christopher Hughes, and by Frannie Hughes, who is both her stepdaughter and niece (don't ask!) as well as by granddaughter Hope Dixon, niece Barbara Ryan, stepson Tom Hughes, and numerous other nieces and nephews. She is also survived by former husband John Dixon and former stepdaughters Betsy and Emily Stewart. She was preceded in death by mother-in-law Nancy Hughes, sister Jennifer Hughes, and by the senseless death of the dignity, heart and soul of As The World Turns.
She leaves us all with beloved memories of our dear friend. Except for Susan Stewart, for which she had these words: "You think you're gonna try to sink your claws into Bob, kiddo? Better watch it, toots!"
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Let's Find Jimmy Hoffa in Ellen Stewart's Hideous Curly Hair Fund.....or to your local animal shelter.

Kathryn's daughter shared this statement with Alan Locher.
[quote] People often ask me what it was like to grow up with "a famous actress for a mother". My usual reply was that I didn't grow up with a famous actress for a mother. I grew up with my mom for a mother. When I was growing up, I spent a lot of time hanging out on soundstages, backstages and in control rooms while she worked. We always had my grandparents nearby in case she had to travel for work. But when she came off the set or walked in the door, she was Mom and acting was the job she left behind. She loved me unconditionally, she was my biggest fan, but she set boundaries and she got on my case if my grades went down. As good moms do. That's why I cherish this picture - it was taken by my mother's oldest friend on the front lawn of her house. No one was wearing makeup, that's just how my mother looked and dressed around the house. And if we look like good friends in that picture, it's because we were. And although she never called me "Toots" or "Kiddo" or "Pal", she put a lot of herself into the character of Kim. So I understand why you all loved her and why she had a big effect on people over the years. Because I loved her, too and did my best to be like her. So thank you for sharing your memories of her , because we will miss her, too.
We can't link to FB here but the photo is of Kathryn and her daughter.

I don’t think Kathryn Hays was searching for publicity or career advancement by the time she got ATWT. She was a working mother and grandmother.
Look at her IMDB-she has very few credits after she joined ATWT in 1972. Same with her Broadway credits.
I don’t recall her doing a ton of press either. If you look at the actresses in the 80s who were nominated and won Emmys, they were always appearing on talk shows or getting profiled in Soap Opera Digest.
She was probably very content having a steady acting job on a popular show.

Her We Love Soaps interview from 2010 talks a bit about that time. She was a working mom (not a grandma yet) when she joined ATWT and she said for the first years she was on, she would be so exhausted after spending hours at the studio that she'd come home and collapse. Like Wyndham, McKinsey, et al she was supporting a child on her income.

You lost me at Susan Lucci. Even Kathryn Hays was a better actress than Susan Lucci. Actually, most community theater actors are better than Susan Lucci. I know she was very popular and was nominated 46 times before she finally won. But Susan Lucci positively sucks as an actress.

[quote]I don’t recall her doing a ton of press either. If you look at the actresses in the 80s who were nominated and won Emmys, they were always appearing on talk shows or getting profiled in Soap Opera Digest.
In the 70s, there were few TV outlets for the actors to appear. Phil Donahue did a few shows devoted to soaps. Maybe one or two a year. Tom Snyder's late night show Tomorrow did a soap themed show once a year or so. But when they did do soap themed episode, it was more talking about the phenomenon of soaps popularity or the themes they were tackling. It was never just an actor coming on to talk about his/her life or some story arc they were doing.
Mike Douglas and Merv Griffin rarely, if ever, devoted any time to the soaps. Don't recall Dinah Shore doing anything with soaps either.
In the 60s and 70s, P&G and the networks had the attitude they didn't want publicity for the actors. They wanted the audience to maintain the illusion they were the characters they portrayed. They wanted the audience to think of Mary Stuart only as Joanne Tate or Beverlee McKinsey only as Iris Carrington.
This was following Irna Phillip's lead of not wanting publicity for the actors and wanting the audience to never make the distinction between actor and character. In fact, when Irna was talking directly to the actors, she always addressed them by their character names. She always called Rosemary Prinz "Penny" to her face or Eileen Fulton as "Lisa" to her face.
As for print, there were few soap-related outlets like Daytime TV in the early 70s. Soap Digest didn't debut until 1975. These mags got the occasional interview with an actor, but that was the exception rather than the rule. By the late 70s, the shows were more willing to let the actors be interviewed.

When Soap Opera Digest debuted in 1975, it was a monthly magazine. The majority of its content was synopsis of each show. They had detailed synopses that ran 3-4 pages per soap. And there were about 12 soaps on the air at that point.
In 1980, it increased it's frequency and started coming out every three weeks. By 1982 or so, it increased frequency and started coming out every two weeks.
Digest went to a weekly format in 1993, following the lead of Soaps In Depth. The move was so Digest could remain competitive since at that point there were 6 to 8 soap magazines in print.

Most people want "it all"; family, house, career, sex life. Actors start off (like most of us) with lots of ambition and great enthusiasm. What you want from life and what you get are two different things. Someone like Vicky Wyndham maybe started off wanting to act in theatre but wound up in soaps at a young age, she enjoyed the work and the security a stable job provided. Someone like Maeve Kinkead wasn't on a soap until she was in her thirties. She too enjoyed steady work, security and the fact that she could have a family and enjoy other interests. Kathryn Hays was probably close to 40 when she started on ATWT, what a coup for an aging actress! She became a well known "mother figure" to fellow actors and fans alike, which probably gave her joy and comfort. These old soap actresses truly had it all, despite not being famous or having a useless award.

Working on a soap is tough, but if you like the stability of a somewhat reliable and steady paycheck that allows you have a pretty consistent life, then there is no better gig than a soap gig. Most actors never reach the level of money and fame as the big movie stars.
Kathryn Hays is one of those people who went to work, did her job, and didn't disrespect the genre, no matter how crazy it got and it gave her a pretty decent life. And soaps, in their heyday, the actors were just as big as some of the big stars. They weren't getting the same money and the fans may have called them by their characters names, but they were still mobbed out on the streets just the same.
Hayes may not have gotten Emmys or ranked high in the Daytime TV polls, but she was important to that show. Just as important as someone who got an award through campaigning and block voting and not on talent.

Thanks for these clips, guys. I was always mainly an AMC guy, but I loved ATWT from 1985-1988–the Julianne years. She is what got me watching the show. I just happened upon it one day, probably on summer vacation, and was immediately taken with her. My mom had watched it, so I knew who all the vets were, but I always thought of it as a “boring” show..but those years were amazing. I remember the “Someone to Watch Over Me” reveal like it was yesterday!
AMC and ATWT were both the best in that era, with my two favorite soap actresses, Julianne and Kate Collins.
This thread makes me miss my friend who passed away in 2019. In high school and in college, he and I were very into ATWT, and we quoted Kim all the time..”kiddo” and “toots” of course. We didn’t talk all the time, but we would often reminisce about the glory days of ATWT. He’d often made fun of me back then about my Julianne “obsession” but later had to admit that I was right about her becoming a big star. And of course, we would always remember Liz Hubbard’s ad-libs!
I wish he was still here so we could mourn the passing of “Kiddo” together.

God, a scene with her and Bob was like watching paint dry, which is insulting to wet paint. Everyone on this little old lady show was boring and seemed like they were 100 years old. You bitches should've watched the competing high energy and more intelligent OLTL. That's the show educated and sophisticated urbanites like me watched. People like Slezak, Strasser, and Andrea Evans had charisma and talent to spare compared to the lifeless ATWT "theater" actors.

"You bitches should've watched the competing high energy and more intelligent OLTL."
This is the funniest criticism of ATWT to me. There was NO soap in the late Eighties that was more high-energy than ATWT. A dozen stories going on at once; a huge cast; a large, rowdy, new family (the Snyders) being integrated into the show; tons of extras running around the hospital and the Mona Lisa... It was so vibrant compared to something like Y&R, where we could watch Nikki or Ashley stare at vases of flowers for what seemed like hours as they experienced unnecessary flashbacks.
And I certainly was not a "grandma" back then. I was a teenager, and I related more to the teens on ATWT than on any other show.
by Anonymous | reply 263 | April 13, 2022 1:58 PM |
Everything seemed boring and old about ATWT. The actors, the characters, the viewers, everything, even the name of the show. Watching that show was a very passive experience. Dull dull dull. You should've been watching Days. While me and my friends were captivated by Marlena's possession and Patch and Kayla, the ATWT viewers being put to sleep by boring old people pouring coffee and having a boring conversation about some boring character's boring trials and tribulations.

ATWT was background noise as the house fraus ironed or vacuumed. No one was really paying attention to what was going on on-screen. The only people who really got into the show and took it seriously, as evidenced on this board, were sad gays looking for a surrogate family and community, since their own families and communities rejected them for being homosexuals.

Let's make no mistake. All soaps are mindless programming for the masses, always have been. Some are just stupider than others. Some people, like myself, watch for the hot hunks. Some people want to escape their humdrum little lives and live vicariously through larger than life characters. Others are looking for surrogate families. But ultimately, these shows are/were always dumb and just a vehicle to sell products to uneducated flyover housewives. I can enjoy watching these silly shows and admit that they're pure mindless escapism. The people that take them too seriously are a bit scary.

Maybe ATWT wasn't freezing the world, but how many real life people do you know are involved in a murder mystery every sweeps period? There was Mr. Big and James Stenbeck and mysterious castles, and women falling up the stairs to miscarry. Soaps, by nature, have always been over the top, even AWT

Soaps were never prized for their writing. Bryggman was justifiably trashing the show and the genre from the day he started on the show. They were always bad, but in a fun sort of way. So bad you had to watch. Only uneducated people and/or people looking for surrogate families actually took them seriously.

Soaps are always a bit larger than life.
We often point a finger at DAYS and GH because they have the most obvious examples, but a lot of us that post here liked the more traditional type show, and were disappointed when those shows started doing everything to be anything other than the shows we came to watch.

If this had happened in, say, 2008, and someone competent was writing the show (and they had a budget), I would guess the following characters would return for Kim’s funeral :
Andy, Hope, Dee, Annie and the quads, Ellen, Betsy, Dani, Penny, Don, Mary, Ryder, Christina Hughes, John, Lyla, Grant….
Actually they could have used the funeral to introduce new younger characters, like Annie’s kids and Christina.

I started watching ATWT with my mom in the summers in the early 80s, when Annie, Dee, Barbara, and Melinda were the center of the show. Soooo boring. Then the Dobsons made John the center of the show and brought on an actually feisty female in Margo and recast Tom with Justin Deas, then Betsy and Steve THAT was when the show kicked into gear. After the nonsense of the McCall family swallowing the show, Marland came along and put all the pieces together for greatness. There were enough pieces left that almost up until the end you could hope someone could make that magic again. That's how well Marland set up the show.

Gay male viewers have NEVER been a demo that advertisers on soap opera strive to get. Yes, lots of gay men watch soap operas but that doesn’t mean anything in the business part of show business. Soap operas target women 18-49 and 25-54. Only. Gay men are not taken into consideration when it comes down to advertising. I laugh when gay men bitch about the soaps. No one cares what you think!! They are not listening to you.
by Anonymous | reply 290 | April 13, 2022 9:07 PM |
You should have seen Doug work when he wrote the show. It was all off the cuff and just flowed from him. He would know where to start each scene and start dictating who said what and when and where they moved around the set (honestly, it was a cushy gig for the other writers because he was dictating a fully realized script).
He had such an amazing sense of story.
And to the earlier poster who called him a misogynist for having a picture of Gloria Monty above his downstairs guest toilet, he was anything but. However, Gloria was horrid to him, so that was a humorous way of venting.
Never heard about issues with Agnes. I know he enjoyed a great relationship with Pam Long and thought very highly of her and her work, which was in a very different style from his own.

That “Hello, Barbara” reveal with James Stenbeck was a hell of a shocker! It was fun back then without all the spoilers. In high school, I watched a bit of pretty much all the soaps to a degree…They all had their moments but I could never really get into Y&R or OLTL for long. I’d watch them if I was home, but I never taped them or anything. I went through a brief DAYS period, and AW was my #3 soap after AMC and ATWT.
Oh, and I also would have fucked Seth Snyder in the moonlight by the pond.

Marland was a fine writer, I don't particularly think he walked on water like a most soap fans, but he had some good stories and he had some stinkers, just like most soap writers. No writer could have all winners when you're writing a never ending story with 250 episodes a year, it's just not possible. I'm also sure he was a nice man, but he was human and I'm sure he made mistakes like most other humans.
[quote]She had her best years with Marland
I think Hubbard held a grudge for him writing her off The Doctors. Marland did not do a great job on The Doctors.
by Anonymous | reply 303 | April 14, 2022 12:48 AM |
I've always loved Marland's work, but I wouldn't say he walked on water. As with almost every writer, his best work was coming into a show as a new writer and seeing what needed to be changed, added or eliminated. He really performed a miracle at ATWT, which was the cure for insomnia before his arrival and became something witty, urbane and multigenerational after he was there for a year.
But he did have weak periods. Losing Julianne, Martha and Margo all within about a year really brought story to a stop. The Carolyn Crawford story remains a story no one understood or cared about. (To be fair, that was written and rewritten during the strike as much as Sonni/Solita was over at GL.)
by Anonymous | reply 304 | April 14, 2022 1:47 AM |
I didn't get the sense from Hubbard's Locher Room appearance that she hated Marland, but it was the only weird thing from that discussion that she said he focused on young love.
He gave her so much story during that time! I think perhaps she was just personally frustrated she wasn't in those kind of stories, the ones she'd been in when she was Althea and had handsome devil Nick making a fuss over her. She was older as Lucinda and could not play the ingenue or even the young professional any more. And I say this as someone who loves her work.

Frank Runyeon played a priest on Santa Barbara for three years, 1988-1991. A couple of years later, he went into the seminary. Wonder if the Santa Barbara experience is what stirred that religious interest.
Meanwhile, Doug Marland treated him like shit. Wouldn't do anything with Steve at all. Gave him nothing to do. This for the man who's on-screen wedding brought the show its highest rating ever.
by Anonymous | reply 312 | April 14, 2022 4:12 PM |
I too wish they had kept the character of Steve, R312, but I can see how the situation went south. Marland was very much about the ensemble, and he was never going to let any super couple take over the show, or even become a super couple in the first place. Look how many roadblocks he threw in the way of Tom/Margo, Craig/Sierra, Holden/Lily. He didn't even allow Holden to "take" Lily's precious virginity! So if Runyeon was throwing his weight around after the big wedding, and Betsy had already been recast...

Did Frank leave or was he fired?
If Marland wasn't going to write for him, I can see the show dropping him to save money. But at the same time, its a bad PR move to fire the man who gave the show its highest rated episode ever.
But I always assumed Frank quit when his contract came up since it would have been obvious to him Marland wasn't going to write for him.
by Anonymous | reply 316 | April 14, 2022 5:21 PM |
Before Marland came to ATWT, the show's biggest draw was super-couple Steve and Betsy. Their trials and tribulations catapulted ATWT to high ratings when the couple finally tied the knot . But once they were married, and the show had to recast a departing Ryan, things took a downward turn. First, it's hard to write for a happily married couple on soaps. Second, Ryan's recast Lindsay Frost had ZERO chemistry with Runyeon. Third, Marland was a big believer in ensemble casting (as R313 stated), so he didn't want one couple swallowing the show. Runyeon was probably pissed, because he started having grade-B storylines. What probably made it worse for him was having his rival for Betsy on the show (Scott Bryce's Craig Montgomerry) suddenly becoming the show's hero. The character became paranoid and jealous, ending up in a Greek prison.

Frank Runyeon was great, but the character was limited. The new Betsy was a horrible actress and looked like a linebacker. Funny what a huge career Meg Ryan went on to have.
I kind of respect him for going off and doing his seminary thing. I don't mind religious people as long as they stick to their personal faith and aren't proselytizing or attacking others.

Marland fucked up The Doctors. He wasn't able to write for Liz Hubbard's Althea Davis, he marginalized the hospital to where it was almost a non-entity, and expanded the dull Dancy family (basically an earlier version of his Reardons and Snyders) at the expense of the rest of the show. Having said that, it was his writing of young love stories on The Doctors that got him noticed by Gloria Monty, and she hired him for GH, and the rest is history.

Doug was a good writer, definitely up there with the best, but I found his writing to be humorless and pompous. For my money, Bill and Agnes were the best, bar none. Although Bill's dialogue was hilariously intentionally stilted and highly stylized, no one could wring as much drama out of a story as he could. He played all the beats and then some. Agnes was also a genius storyteller. More than anyone, she mixed old-school style with contemporary storytelling, and she had such wonderfully unique, quirky Dickensian characters that couldn't be found anywhere else. Her writing was also full of heart, and she was also unequaled in her use of humor and an intelligent approach to social issues. I was saddened that Agnes and Doug clashed over Loving. On paper, it should've been an amazing collaboration. The first year of Loving was great, and you could sense elements from both writers.

I thought Marland did a great job with ATWT. He took awhile before he decided which characters were working out, and which weren't. He took villainous Craig Montgomery and slowly turned him into a hero. He did the opposite with Barbara, changing her from the always put-upon victim to a scheming bitch. Instead of planting all seven Snyders on the front burner after he took over, he slowly intoduced them one-by-one, always tying them to an established character (Holden to Lily, Seth to Frannie, Meg to Dusty, etc). I remember Mama Emma having telephone conversations with off-screen kids Caleb and Ellie YEARS before we actually saw them.

When I watched ATWT in the early 1990s, I always liked the friendship between Susan and Lyla. It seemed like a realistic and natural friendship. Susan was a doctor at the hospital and Lyla was a nurse. They both were middle age and had adult children. I appreciated that Marland tried to portray characters as having friends. I love to see scenes where characters are actually acting like regular people doing ordinary tasks. The scenes may not move the story along, but it helps to develop characters and relationships. One of my favorite scenes was Susan and Lyla (at one of their homes) painting their nails together, wearing facials, and just talking like two friends would.

R342, I agree that Sheffer started off great. He took one storyline (the unraveling of Barbara and Hal's marriage) and spun a million different tangents from it. Like Marland, he plucked Barbara off the backburner and mad her a force to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, after about a year and a half, he ran out of plot and the show gave us horrible characters like Ameera, Liberty, Gabriel and those awful Z Twins.

I loved Loving that first year. At the time, most of the soaps were copying GH. Even "my show" AMC, seemed to be de-emphasizing the family units and doing silly action adventure stuff (Lars Bogard revealed as a Nazi!). Loving placed emphasis on families, community, with a small-town vibe. It was a traditional show in terms of structure, but just seemed so contemporary in its approach to storytelling without sacrificing the basic elements that other shows were carelessly tossing aside to become a GH clone. It combined Agnes's trademark humor and intelligence with Doug's more austere approach to storytelling. I have no idea what was going on behind the scenes, but what showed up on screen seemed like a dream marriage between the two of them.

I saw a recent interview with Annie Parisse. The interviewer asked her about her time on the soaps, and she basically bashed ATWT and the genre as a whole. The interviewer was bad too, joking about soaps with her as subpar entertainment. The only positive thing she said that was that Kathleen Widdoes was in the cast and referred to her as a fabulous theater actress. Her husband was into real estate and gave Annie some pointers about buying a co-op in Manhattan.

R343 Those characters were long after Hogan's time.
Hogan and Goutman had a decent first few years, but once Hogan left, it was a mess. And then when MADD left, both he and Wheeler at GL were basically doing double duty and both just got so burned out - and it showed on screen. Everyone involved (except for the actors) stopped giving a fuck around 2006.

Robin Christopher would have been an incredible Frannie and Sabrina recast. They should have brought her onto ATWT in the 90s instead of Another World. Love her as Skye on AMC.

Annie Parisse was duller than dishwater and read 10 years older than her actual age. Her two main co-stars, Michael Park and Maura West, are laughing to the bank. They’ve both had highly successful and consistent careers since ATWT. Keep doing episodics and C-level film roles, Annie.

I thought she was really bad on that role. Martha was an outstanding teen actress but I felt like she regressed over the years, and another character was beyond her.
This is a show where Julianne once played half-sisters and many viewers had no clue to was the same actress. Martha shouldn’t have attempted something similar.

Martha Byrne grew up in Ridgewood. How could she have a bad New Jersey accent? Even if she didn't give off the dulcet tones of the state of her birth every time she opened her mouth, she would have heard it often enough to know just how to do it.

R356, I couldn't disagree with you more. Scott Bryce's Craig was acting at his best. He never played him as black or white. When he was villainous Craig, he always made you feel for him; when he was heroic Craig, you always saw the flaws. Hunt Block's Craig was a one-note joke. He was highly entertaining, but could never play anything besides the snide rogue. On the other hand, at least he didn't commit the unpardonable sin of making Craig boring, like Jon Lindstrom did.
R361, if I'm not mistaken, Martha was the first ATWT woman to win best Lead Actress, and it was because of the Lily/Rose roles.

Larry Bryggman won in the 80s and Michael Park won the last two years for Best Actor.
Supporting Actress ATWT winners include Lesli Kay, Cady McClain and (ugh) Julie Pinson.
Supporting Actor: Justin Deas and Gregg Marx both won as Tom, John Wesley Shipp, and Ben Hendrickson.
Martha also won as Younger Actress; Julianne Moore won the year after Martha, and then Jennifer Landon won for several years in a row.
Younger Actor winners were Brian Bloom and Andy Kavovit.

When I first started really watching ATWT in 1985, Julianne and Marisa Tomei were the “ingenues” but there was briefly this other character named SPREE. She wasn’t on for long, and I remember her looking a lot like Marisa/Marcy. What was her deal? And was Marcy written out when Marland took over or was it just because Marisa got A Different World?

The joke used to be that Kathy Hays was such a non-entity on ATWT, that the only reason she kept her job for so many years is because they simply forgot to fire her. Let's face it. She was no great shakes as an actress, and she pretty much blended with the wallpaper. There's a reason she was never nominated for an Emmy, and it has nothing to do with backstage politics or block voting. Kim Zimmer, Erika Slezak, Helen Gallagher, Liz Hubbard, Mary Fickett, Marcy Walker, Susan Lucci, Irene Dailey, Robin Strasser, Sue Flannery, etc., all have lead Emmys, and they deserved them. There was a high quality to their work that Kathy could just never achieve. RIP, yes, but let's not pretend she was the second coming of Sarah Bernhardt.

But in fairness Marisa also wanted out - you have to memorize tons of dialogue everyday, and it gets to the point where you are just reciting words - and Marisa said she didn't want to be that type of actress. Just recapping the plot or just trying to get out pages of dialogue a day.

This won't be popular, but I'm going to defend Chris Goutman. Chris' work on ATWT probably kept the show on well past its expiration date or well past how long both P&G and CBS wanted to keep it on air. I'm not saying the man was perfect, but he had a tough job and very little money to put on 250 episodes a year. He had to make difficult, and often unpopular decisions, to keep the lights on. And when it comes down to it, P&G wanted out of soaps, and CBS wanted those two hours back. There was nothing ATWT and GL could have done to survive. At least both ABC and NBC made offers to purchase Another World (which PG turned down, which should tell you what the plan was), no such offers were made for ATWT and GL.

AW was cancelled in June 1999. SoapNet launched in Jan. 2000.
That would have been an intriguing strategy to launch SoapNet with exclusive content like new episodes of AW. Somebody was forward thinking with that idea.
But at the same time, many cable companies were slow to add SoapNet. My cable company didn't add it until 2006. So if it had happened and SoapNet launched with new AW episodes, the ratings would have been very, very low.

I don't know if Marland actually broke his rule. I think the McColls were all gone before he got there or on their way out (except for Brian, of course). Same with Stewart and Marcy. When "Another World" ended in 1999 after 35 years, NBC sold the studios on East 14th Street in the Midwood section of Brooklyn they owned since 1952. Became JG Studios home of "As the World Turns" from 2000 to the end in 2010. JG went bankrupt in 2015. NBC Studio 1 is now Ohel Family and Children's Services. Studio 2 is a Self-Storage.

Jay was brought in by previous writers to duplicate GL "Four Musketeers" storyline. When Marland took over the only two left from the foursome was Frannie & Jay, Of course Frannie was spun off into the Doug Cummings storyline, while Jay just hung around.

When NBC cancelled AW back in 1999, ABC made an offer for the Felicia Gallant character, which PG refused. Then ABC came back with an offer to buy the entire show, also an offer PG declined. It was CBS' idea to bring the AW characters to ATWT to try and get some angry AW viewers to sample ATWT.

Why not Connie Ford as Andy Dixon? She was certainly more manly looking then Scott, and Nancy could use a good swift kick in the cunt every now and then.
by Anonymous | reply 463 | April 19, 2022 9:34 PM |
Andy is now Andrea?
by Anonymous | reply 464 | April 19, 2022 9:49 PM |
You whores keep your hands off my Andrew!
by Anonymous | reply 465 | April 19, 2022 10:07 PM |
Scotty D. is VERY busy driving Maura to her plastic surgeon’s office. She wants to look like Joan Rivers. Same face, same hair.
by Anonymous | reply 466 | April 19, 2022 11:16 PM |
They should have stolen that hot piece Matt Crane away from AW to play Andy!
He and Robin Christopher must have made beautiful children.
by Anonymous | reply 467 | April 20, 2022 12:03 AM |
Anyone would've been hotter than Scotty D. They should've raided the ABC stable and cast a CK underwear model as Andy. Mark Menard who played Boyd on AMC comes to mind. Or they could've moved heaven and earth to get Josh Duhamel.
by Anonymous | reply 468 | April 20, 2022 12:11 AM |
So what was everybody's favorite Kim scene where she laid the law down to someone?
by Anonymous | reply 469 | April 20, 2022 12:22 AM |
[quote] They should've raided the ABC stable and cast a CK underwear model as Andy.
They did that in the mid-90s when they recast the character of Paul with a male model - it was a disaster
by Anonymous | reply 470 | April 20, 2022 12:23 AM |
R470, OMG, I had blocked that out. ModelPaul was awful, almost as bad as a typical DAYS/B&B/Passions actor. That was probably the nadir of ATWT. Luckily they bounced back with Scott Holroyd , who was wonderful as the conflicted son of James and Barbara. Of course, then they went to the godawful Roger Howarth.
by Anonymous | reply 471 | April 20, 2022 12:53 AM |
I had long quit watching by then…who was “model Paul”?
I only started watching again for parts of the Luke and Noah stuff, and pretty much fast forwarded through everything else unless it was something with one of the veterans like Lucinda, John, etc. Which wasn’t much.
by Anonymous | reply 472 | April 20, 2022 1:49 AM |
When I was a kid, I thought soaps were dumb and hated when my mom and aunts watched them…but I have some very clear memories of catching scenes and stories that stick in my mind.
I remember my mom and aunt being sad because Lisa’s son died. Was he hit by a car? I just remember them watching an episode where Nancy was comforting Lisa about it, and thinking it really was pretty major that a soap had killed a kid. I had to have been in early elementary school.
Then when I was about 12, I discovered John Wesley Shipp in a Speedo, and I was suddenly interested in soaps!
by Anonymous | reply 473 | April 20, 2022 1:58 AM |
R423 Kinda sorta?
Marland was hired, I think, a few months before he started actually taking over, so I think he was able to direct Susie Bedsow Horgan to a degree saying, let this happen, don't do this, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 474 | April 20, 2022 3:40 AM |
ModelPaul was a very nice guy who was in over his head. They had him doing all sorts of angsty stuff because he had James in head (James being currently dead). They paired him with the Kasnoff sister, Sarah. Once they abandoned the James stuff, he was not a terrible light romantic lead, but he was already on his way out by then.
Scott Holroyd was another nice guy, but to my mind also way too lightweight for Paul. But what do I know? I liked Howarth.
by Anonymous | reply 475 | April 20, 2022 10:32 AM |
NYT! I am impressed. They haven't been very consistent about running soap obits for years.
by Anonymous | reply 477 | April 20, 2022 2:33 PM |
Bitch never won an emmy or even a nom, so why we talking about her?
by Anonymous | reply 478 | April 20, 2022 2:40 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 479 | April 20, 2022 2:43 PM |
She was the Tina Sloan/Lillian Raines of ATWT. The type of actress/character who's eminently forgettable yet inexplicably lasted for decades. I don't understand it either. I guess they kept her around for consistency. It certainly wasn't for her acting skills.

Barking kiddo at someone doesn't win you an Emmy. KH had her lazy bag of tricks. Always phoned it in. She was no Erika Slezak, or Susan Lucci for that matter.

In 2004, the Daytime Emmys honored a record 10 actors with lifetime achievement awards. Kathryn was nowhere to be found. Never a nomination. Never even a lifetime achievement. Fact.

I wouldn't exactly call KH's acting rancid. Boring, uninspired, lacking in energy, not nuanced, yes. Rancid is too strong a word, but you're entitled to your opinion.
by Anonymous | reply 491 | April 20, 2022 4:11 PM |
still rancid

What a lovely NYT obit of Kathryn Hays!
I wish the Times put such effort into the obits for all soap stars.
I'd be willing to bet, the reporter writing the obit watched ATWT and put the extra effort into her obit.

R493 Indeed, Liz. You can tell by her mention of "toots" and "kiddo" that she knew.
by Anonymous | reply 496 | April 20, 2022 7:31 PM |
KH could never have pulled off a possession storyline the way Dee Dee Halls did. It takes a certain caliber of actress to do that convincingly, and poor KH would've been out of her league. Calling the Devil "toots" wouldn't have cut it.
by Anonymous | reply 497 | April 20, 2022 7:38 PM |
Still no.
by Anonymous | reply 498 | April 20, 2022 8:11 PM |
Someone posted a clip where Kim and Susan were arguing. I found it strange that, during the argument, Kim referred to Susan as "kiddo." Kiddo doesn't seem like an appropriate word to use when you are angry with someone.
by Anonymous | reply 499 | April 20, 2022 9:05 PM |
I wish the show were still on, if only because it would've been cool to see her name misspelled as "Katherine Hayes" on her tribute card.
by Anonymous | reply 500 | April 20, 2022 9:09 PM |
And Katherine Hayes as Kim Stuart
by Anonymous | reply 501 | April 20, 2022 9:53 PM |
Kim used “kiddo” when she was both angry at someone and also as an affectionate term for Andy. Both worked fine.

Since Robert Morse died today I'll post a brief clip of his daughter Robin in her short run as John Dixon's niece Pam. Pam and Beau were pushed as the New Hot Couple for a bit but they fell off the canvas as quickly as they were shoved on....unusually so for a Marland show.

by Anonymous | reply 511 | April 21, 2022 6:40 PM |
Beau couldn't act worth a tinker's fart but he sho was pretty.
I would have watched an hour of Holden, Beau and whoever Robert Tyler was playing grabbing their junk through their swim trunks all day.

I am posting this on all the P&G related forums.
The Locher Room will have a Lisa Brown tribute next Friday 4/29.
And they *finally* have John Wesley Shipp participating in one of these.
by Anonymous | reply 513 | April 21, 2022 8:43 PM |
Aww, I liked Pam. Was she “rivals” with Parker Posey’s Tess or am I misremembering?
That clip reminded me of how much I loved Melanie Smith as Emily and how much I hated her replacement.
by Anonymous | reply 514 | April 22, 2022 12:14 AM |
R514 No, I think that was a few years later. Tess was on with Dawn, played by Sharon Case, now Sharon on Young and Raggedy.
by Anonymous | reply 515 | April 22, 2022 2:05 AM |
Sharon Case’s character was Debbie. She was the daughter of Ned, Emma’s boyfriend, who murdered Linc because he treated Debbie like shit.
They tried to pair Dusty and Pam, then they connected her to Beau, the brother Laura Simmons, who was Chris’ babysitter and Bob’s stalker.

Apparently, the title of the forthcoming biopic on Netflix is: "Kiddo: Fifty Shades of Hays."
by Anonymous | reply 517 | April 22, 2022 4:25 AM |
I loved Kim. When she wasn't suffering from amnesia, she felt free to tell the wayward jackasses in Oakdale what she thought of them. Even Kim had a breaking point and look out if if you caused it. Sometime she'd start out with her eyes closed and just rip you a new one, then she open her eyes as if to say, "you and your behavior are beneath the both of us, you exhaust me and I am done for now. "

Digest has a nice full page on Kathryn's death in the beginning section. Nothing new to add to the press we've already seen, but nicely done, and the editor also mentions Hays and her passing on her page.
by Anonymous | reply 525 | April 22, 2022 7:26 PM |
R525, I read that. it's nice that she made the cover and all but really just one page in the news section? I think her passing was announced on Friday, April 8
that gave Digest the whole next week (well, through Weds when the pages ship) to do a proper tribute.
Run some photos of Doug Cummings and Sabrina and Susan/Bob affair pictures. Get Marie Masters on the phone and or Scott and Maura.
They mostly used Don's statement and some Instagram quotes.
One advantage print has over the web is to dig a little deeper and give something a few pages. I don't get why SOD doesn't do that more.
by Anonymous | reply 526 | April 23, 2022 12:54 AM |
I haven’t read a soap magazine since AMC went off the air. What do they even print with only 4 soaps left? Do they do a feature on every single performer??
by Anonymous | reply 527 | April 23, 2022 1:35 AM |
I'm a total hypocrite on things like this. On one hand I think it's tacky to make public statements about something personal like death, but at the same time, I'm always fascinated by who DOESN'T make a public statement. I always wonder if they're like me and don't comment on such things or if there was some kind of beef.
by Anonymous | reply 528 | April 23, 2022 1:39 AM |

It helps with closure, but I see your point at the same time.
