WILL SMITH SAID “KEEP MY WIFE’S NAME OUT OF YOUR FUCKING MOUTH”
Will Smith knocked the shit out of Chris Rock (official thread)

Wow
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 28, 2022 2:36 AM |
that silenced the crowd...now we get to see him get up there and accept award
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 28, 2022 2:39 AM |
Huh?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 28, 2022 2:39 AM |
At first I though the hit was fake and part of the act. I agree with Will Smith, the remark was a low blow -- but seriously it was just a joke. But the way Smith reacted was over the top, and now if he wins, he better calm the fuck down before he makes his acceptance speech.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 28, 2022 2:39 AM |
What was the joke?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 28, 2022 2:42 AM |
Thank you, r5. I'm not watching the event so I didn't understand the reference.
r6, apparently Kris Rock made a joke about Jada looking like GI Jane because she's bald. It's a low blow given she shaved her head due to an illness.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 28, 2022 2:44 AM |
An unusual move on Smith's part when there's a lot in his personal life that comedians might decide is no longer off-limits.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 28, 2022 2:44 AM |
That was shocking. He's so zen. Insane.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 28, 2022 2:45 AM |
Calm the fuck down you asshole.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 28, 2022 2:45 AM |
It's called a joke. Brush it off cause you're about to win an Oscar, you pathetic fucking asshole!
God how I hate Will Smith!!
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 28, 2022 2:46 AM |
I didn't complete my thought: I'm not watching the event, so I didn't understand the reference and had to search Twitter.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 28, 2022 2:46 AM |
[quote] apparently Kris Rock made a joke about Jada looking like GI Jane because she's bald. It's a low blow given she shaved her head due to an illness.
Umm, it's not an illness, she has hair loss from doing it up in braids for 50 years.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 28, 2022 2:47 AM |
I fucking loved it!
Definitely is going to breathe some life into the Oscars now lol.
Everyone is going to tune in right now to watch. There’s finally a reason.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 28, 2022 2:47 AM |
Everybody was stunned. The salute to The Godfather was diluted.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 28, 2022 2:47 AM |
Worst Oscars ever. The putative best actor winner assaulting a speaker who is a COMIC doing a joke about a woman who has to be "protected" by her husband?
Astonishing. Nasty ghetto trash. And don't pretend it's not all about stereotypes.
Shit.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 28, 2022 2:47 AM |
It's a joke. A JOKE.
Comedy is dead. I laughed my ass off and I thought Jada and Will might let down their egos and laugh, too.
But, nope, they behaved EXACTLY how I expected them to. Like assholes.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 28, 2022 2:48 AM |
R17, was comedy dead when Lenny Bruce was arrested for the things he said? I swear, people have no perspective
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 28, 2022 2:49 AM |
That was shocking. The Oscars = Source Awards.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 28, 2022 2:49 AM |
R16 is nasty Trumpster trailer trash
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 28, 2022 2:49 AM |
They shut off the sound for a lot of what was said. What did Chris Rock say back to him?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 28, 2022 2:49 AM |
It ruined the mood. Go do it backstage or something.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 28, 2022 2:49 AM |
It did because I got a few texts about it and no one was watching the show, but tuned in. I tuned right back out after the memoriam segment with singing and dancing.
I can’t tell if it was truly real though.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 28, 2022 2:49 AM |
America is so classy. LOL.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 28, 2022 2:50 AM |
I'm surprised no one on the DL made that joke first
I'm also shocked Jada didn't go up there herself, you know she could take him out

by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 28, 2022 2:52 AM |
If he wins, it's going to get interesting. And what do the hosts say when they first come back out?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 28, 2022 2:53 AM |
Well, there's the marker for how low society has sunk. Thanks for thinking of the billions watching, Will. And the kids.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 28, 2022 2:54 AM |
Having been disrespected we are lucky Will didn't gun down Chris
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 28, 2022 2:54 AM |
American society just gets trashier and trashier by the year. Shouldn't he be removed by security after punching the freaking host? Where is Steve Wilkos when you need him?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 28, 2022 2:55 AM |
Pop culture is now at rock bottom.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 28, 2022 2:55 AM |
I am legitimately shocked.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 28, 2022 2:56 AM |
This makes me like him more.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 28, 2022 2:56 AM |
Hee had to protect his beard. Even if she’s bald.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 28, 2022 2:56 AM |
I'm with Will Smith on this one - the joke was really inappropriate
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 28, 2022 2:56 AM |
What is this bullshit
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 28, 2022 2:56 AM |
This could be early dementia. He has been acting odd during the last few months.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 28, 2022 2:57 AM |
Whatever their sexual arrangement is I’m sure he cares deeply for her and good for him.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 28, 2022 2:57 AM |
Will is ghetto trash . I hope Rock Eviscerates him later
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 28, 2022 2:57 AM |
Holy shit! That was the last thing I expected to happen at the Oscars.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 28, 2022 2:58 AM |
R35 and R37, so you condone violence as a response to disagreement about a comedic’s joke?
Jesus. No wonder American society is in complete devolvement.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 28, 2022 2:59 AM |
r13, if we were talking about Brandy, that'd be a valid observation. However, an image search for Jada shows she's worn various hairstyles over the years and hasn't stuck primarily to braids. Also, she has alopecia, which is an illness -- it's not stag 4 cancer, but it is an illness. It makes sense she'd be sensitive about it, especially if someone is making a joke about it at her expense in front of her peers and millions of people.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 28, 2022 2:59 AM |
Right or not, it was not the way to handle things. Swearing, assaulting people during a televised national event? What is this?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 28, 2022 2:59 AM |
[quote]An unusual move on Smith's part when there's a lot in his personal life that comedians might decide is no longer off-limits.
In the middle of will's tirade, Chris Rock said, "I could . . . . "
I think Chris was going to say, "I could say something" (about you or about your marriage"
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 28, 2022 2:59 AM |
oh shit is will gonna punch jane campion now?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 28, 2022 3:00 AM |
Will Smith just committed a crime on tv for the entire world to see
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 28, 2022 3:00 AM |
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said, "You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air"
Word.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 28, 2022 3:01 AM |
Part of me thinks this was planned to help boost ratings. Or at least get people talking about the Oscars.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 28, 2022 3:02 AM |
That was far worse than you guys made it sound. Holy shit. What a douche!
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 28, 2022 3:03 AM |
A punch is rarely appropriate, and certainly not in response to a joke, no matter how unkind. Jada’s support fraus need to get real.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 28, 2022 3:03 AM |
I felt the punch may have been staged but everything after, especially Chris's reaction after Will cussed him out, not so much.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 28, 2022 3:03 AM |
Here's an even better link with the joke and the punch
will smith is such fucking trash
by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 28, 2022 3:03 AM |
Looking at R50 makes me think Will Smith has rage issues or maybe a mental health issue. A more appropriate reaction would’ve been to take care of it off camera after the show. Then you can punch Chris Rock!
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 28, 2022 3:04 AM |
I wonder if Jada recently received news she has some very serious medical condition and they haven't released the news yet because Will is taking it so poorly and then this happened.
It's the only thing that would turn this around. I am not saying it's ok, I am talking from a public relations standpoint.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 28, 2022 3:04 AM |
R51 Which part of you - the stupid part?
by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 28, 2022 3:05 AM |
Chris just got a viscous face slapping
by Anonymous | reply 60 | March 28, 2022 3:05 AM |
The Oscars are so ghetto now. No class or glamour. Just a Jerry Springer episode. Black people ruin everything. No wonder property values go down when they move. The ultra-liberals who support such behavior in the name of diversity won't even live near them.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 28, 2022 3:05 AM |
I don't think Chris Rock knew that she has alopecia. Jada is one arrogant, overbearing woman. Will Smith just ruined his big night.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 28, 2022 3:06 AM |
R56 apparently Jada struggles with some hair disease which is why she is bald......so that joke from Chris might seem like a very low blow....still Will shouldn't have let it ruin his night.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | March 28, 2022 3:06 AM |
The Smiths are all fucking weirdos.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | March 28, 2022 3:06 AM |
This will be referenced FOREVER
by Anonymous | reply 67 | March 28, 2022 3:07 AM |
When I was younger I used to look forward to the Oscars as a night of glamour and fun. The movies were about entertainment and escapism, and so were the Oscars.
I guess those days are gone. I am all for diversity and inclusion, we need more of it. But we also need people to behave with class. This show seems to be celebrating trashy behavior.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | March 28, 2022 3:07 AM |
The interesting thing was that Will Smith actually laughed at the joke while Jada was clearly unhappy. I'd love to see the few seconds where the laughter stopped and he charged on stage.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | March 28, 2022 3:08 AM |
R66, I don't agree, it's only Morrissey that's an asshole
by Anonymous | reply 71 | March 28, 2022 3:08 AM |
Fuck Will Smith. I'm out.
Acting like that, and then sitting there all smug through the rest of the ceremony, when he should be hiding in shame.
I've never liked him much, he's massively overrated as both an actor and a rapper, and he can go fuck himself forever.
I'll never pay a penny to see anything he's involved with ever again.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | March 28, 2022 3:08 AM |
Oh for fuck’s sake Will, it’s a vicious slapping accompanied buy a loud hiss.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | March 28, 2022 3:08 AM |
Again, it's not a disease. She has hair loss like millions of other people have hair loss.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | March 28, 2022 3:08 AM |
Didn’t Will get into a fight with someone when he was nominated for something else? He and Jada left and blamed it on a sick kid at home.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | March 28, 2022 3:08 AM |
R4 I didn't even get the joke. Did everyone realize he was talking about her hair? I thought he was joking about her butch persona.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | March 28, 2022 3:09 AM |
Thanks, Will Smith, for throwing the punch which finally downs the Oscars to the trashy level of Jerry Springer.
Sure your colleagues are thrilled to be brought down to that level.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | March 28, 2022 3:09 AM |
Denzel and Tyler Perry comforted Will after the incident. What a fragile manbaby.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | March 28, 2022 3:09 AM |

Apparently, Denzel pulled Will aside during a commercial break after the incident and spoke to him. The last time Denzel gave Will advice was when he told him not to kiss a man on screen, so I'm not optimistic.

by Anonymous | reply 82 | March 28, 2022 3:09 AM |

This has overtaken Ukraine in the news. Legitimately shocked.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | March 28, 2022 3:10 AM |
Chris Rock didn't know she had an illness. Can't be mocking if he didn't know.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | March 28, 2022 3:11 AM |
So comedians aren't allowed to make fun of people anymore?
by Anonymous | reply 86 | March 28, 2022 3:11 AM |

R85 How the hell do you know? I doubt that.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | March 28, 2022 3:12 AM |
He owes Chris Rock an apology. This acceptance speech looks like more acting ... he is a fucking phony.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | March 28, 2022 3:12 AM |
I guess Will felt humiliated because this was his big night and Chris Rock ruined it. But I don't think Rock meant to do it. After all, Rock had a made a documentary about black women's hair if I remember correctly.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | March 28, 2022 3:12 AM |
Will Smith is trash for doing that in public. He knows it'll reflect badly on black people.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | March 28, 2022 3:12 AM |
Don't you wish now you had invited me to the show as Sean Penn wanted ?
by Anonymous | reply 93 | March 28, 2022 3:12 AM |
They're fucking cheering him. What a prick!
by Anonymous | reply 94 | March 28, 2022 3:13 AM |
Wow. Now he is going full blown messiah.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | March 28, 2022 3:13 AM |
R85 agreed but then you can't act all surprised if something you said gets the wrong reaction. I am absolutely 100% for mean jokes and un pc-ness but it's a risk you take, I'm sure that's not the first time Chris Rock had to deal with a face punch because of his jokes. He lives for that shit. And honestly, I like him all the more for it.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | March 28, 2022 3:14 AM |
I think the Hollywood power brokers will make Chris Rock apologize to Will Smith. They have to do something. This doesn't look good for Black Hollywood as they are both huge stars.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | March 28, 2022 3:14 AM |
Fuck your fake invoking the name of God and love. You have real anger issues.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | March 28, 2022 3:14 AM |
I cannot believe the trashy, smug guy is up there talking about having to “protect” people after punching/assaulting and screaming obscenities on live tv at the 2022 Oscars.
He is not a “vessel of love”.
He’s full of shit.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | March 28, 2022 3:14 AM |
R72 You're out? How will we go on without YOU, of all people!
Damn.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | March 28, 2022 3:14 AM |
Kathy is right. Though with all the hairtrigger tempered gun nuts in the US, a punch might be the least of your worries.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | March 28, 2022 3:15 AM |
R89, not everyone is going to be tuned into everything Jada is saying. He probably didn't know.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | March 28, 2022 3:15 AM |
He needs to apologize to Chris Rock, not the academy or his fellow nominees!
by Anonymous | reply 103 | March 28, 2022 3:15 AM |
Did I just see GI Jane in the audience ?
by Anonymous | reply 104 | March 28, 2022 3:16 AM |
Can you imagine if, say, Sean Penn had gotten on stage and punched the host? We'd hear endless rants about him assaulting a black man, his white male privilege, and he'd be canceled forever. But Will Smith does it and gets an Oscar and a standing ovation. Such fucking bullshit.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | March 28, 2022 3:16 AM |
Talk about delusional!!
by Anonymous | reply 106 | March 28, 2022 3:16 AM |
R86, yes. And to think of some of the things that Ricky Gervais said at the Golden Globes.
The stuff he said to Mel Gibson - to his face - as he was standing on the same stage as him.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | March 28, 2022 3:17 AM |
Denzel does NOT look pleased. Will really fucked up.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | March 28, 2022 3:17 AM |
He should have his Oscar revoked.
He has clearly demonstrated the low caliber of his character.
Remember what happened to Russell Crowe as a result of his anger issues. It was said he lost out on awards as a result.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | March 28, 2022 3:18 AM |
I'm gonna punch a guy on live tv and get rewarded for it.

by Anonymous | reply 112 | March 28, 2022 3:18 AM |
SO he punches the crap out of Rock, swears at him, all on live TV, as the idiot enablers around him act like it's normal, and now he's apologizing and talking about love.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | March 28, 2022 3:18 AM |

R108 Ok
by Anonymous | reply 116 | March 28, 2022 3:19 AM |
It's an undeserved Oscar. He got it for all the money he's raked in for the industry, and will hopefully continue to rake in. Period.
The movie was a total whitewash of what a shithead Richard Williams really was.
Yes, what he did in the world of tennis was remarkable, but he was still an insufferable asshole.
Smith's performance was serviceable at best. He didn't embarrass himself by any means, but he was nowhere near the level of most of his competition.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | March 28, 2022 3:20 AM |
He is defending the mother of his children rather than beating his lover in private like Sean Penn. that’s way more respectable.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | March 28, 2022 3:20 AM |
I'm stunned. Just stunned. How was he not dragged out of there and arrested?
by Anonymous | reply 120 | March 28, 2022 3:20 AM |
Scientology didn't work this evening Will??
I love this btw, they are both massive idiots. Hopefully this is the end of their totally undeserved careers.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | March 28, 2022 3:20 AM |
This is the type of crazy shit that used to happen at the VMAs every year, not the Oscars.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | March 28, 2022 3:22 AM |
The punch didn't look like it landed so I'm not sure if it was real. Regardless, if the Chris Rock jock was directed to another actress, Will Smith would have laughed. What a disgrace.
Smith is a comic, so I'm there's plenty of proof we'll find of him mocking others.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | March 28, 2022 3:24 AM |
I can't believe he's just sitting there, smiling and clapping like nothing happened.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | March 28, 2022 3:24 AM |
So unreal, Ricky Gervais would be lynched if everyone decides to assault comedian for their jokes.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | March 28, 2022 3:24 AM |
A black man acting like a violent piece of trash in front of millions of people. Way to fight those stereotypes, Will. I used to be a fan, I will not watch anything else he is in ever.
Piece of shit.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | March 28, 2022 3:25 AM |
Damn. The assault and battery seen throughout the world!
SETTLEMENT! It's pay day, baby!
by Anonymous | reply 127 | March 28, 2022 3:25 AM |
I thought Will Smith was known for not swearing? That punch must have been a slap or light punch. Chris Rock is a smaller guy with a slight build, so the physics would indicate a different outcome than we saw. Also, Rock’s mouth looks full of expensive caps or veneers. These would probably have been damaged if Smith used any real force.
It’s a sad, disturbing clip.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | March 28, 2022 3:25 AM |
Everyone in the audience seems to be just fine with what he did.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | March 28, 2022 3:26 AM |
[quote]Will Smith is trash for doing that in public. He knows it'll reflect badly on black people.
Exactly, R92, and he did it in front of an international audience.
If he was that bothered he could have waited and talked to Rock afterwards instead of committing assault, this makes me wonder if there wasn't something else already bubbling under the surface - either between Smith & Rock or something else.
Here it is in slow motion.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | March 28, 2022 3:27 AM |
R68 you know that's not him, right?
by Anonymous | reply 132 | March 28, 2022 3:27 AM |
[quote] I'm stunned. Just stunned. How was he not dragged out of there and arrested?
Ditto, R120.
How he could then go up there and lie through his teeth above “love” and “God” after assaulting and screaming at someone is incomprehensible.
The fact that he wasn’t pulled immediately and instead given support/applause is tacit acknowledgement that violence is acceptable (also per other defenders here) and only puts others (comedians/people who disagree/etc) at risk.
This is sick. He is sick.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | March 28, 2022 3:27 AM |
what the hell was he talking about? having to "protect" the actors on the movie.... suppose to be a river of love because GOD wants him to be...
sobbing but yet not asking forgiveness or saying he was sorry to the person he just assaulted?
MY GOD THE AMOUNT OF NARCISSISM, AND SELF ABSORBTION AND SELF RIGHTEOUSNESS IS OFF THE CHARTS!.....LITERALLY DOESN'T THINK HIS SHIT STINKS!... HE IS THE REASON WHY MANY HATE HOLLYWOOD! PURE EXAMPLE OF THIS...
by Anonymous | reply 134 | March 28, 2022 3:28 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 135 | March 28, 2022 3:28 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 136 | March 28, 2022 3:28 AM |
Let's not be dramatic, unless Chris lost a tooth, it's not a big deal. This is the best thing to ever happen on the Oscar's stage. Seriously I was snoozing through the whole thing up to that point.

This is exactly why I felt Laverne Cox was totally justified in not apologizing to Will and Jada. They put all their business out on front street but can't stand when someone even makes a joke about it! She knows they are full of it hence her refusal to bow down.
Will has been clearly suffering since Jada revealed her affair with the young man. Im black and Im so disappointed that he turned into the angry violent black man instead of getting a therapist to help him deal with those problems. Just like Jussie, totally making sure no one ever trusts a black man.

I can't believe this is even being debated on Twitter. Yes, Rock made a tasteless joke, nearly all comedians do, but he didn't deserve to be assaulted. Assault is worse than a joke, 1000x worse.

The thing which irritates me even more than the incident is the fact that Will and Jada are two of the biggest sanctimonious assholes in Hollywood - and who have raised a new generation with the same rotten traits. Thank god Will's oldest son was largely raised by his mother and not be Will and Jada. Tonight, people saw the real Will instead of the act he always puts on.

It always has been. Even when he's been the #1 box office star in the US, and he's winning the biggest accolade the film industry can give him, his ego is so fragile it could not bear to hear his wife insulted. It had nothing to do with protecting his wife from any real harm; it had everything to do with protecting his own image.
And he blew it.

by Anonymous | reply 189 | March 28, 2022 4:01 AM |
The thing is, Will Smith and Chris Rock have known each other for decades. Chris Rock was on “Fresh Prince”.
So there must have been something deeper too.

by Anonymous | reply 192 | March 28, 2022 4:03 AM |
Still photos reveal Smith’s hand was open, so this interaction looks like a slap in the face. The yelling and swearing are pretty obnoxious and disgraceful. This whole mess is just confusing and sad.
Chris Rock was like a deer in headlights. I feel bad for him on so many levels. It looks so hard to be funny and edgy. Why would anyone even want to be a comedian? I know many comedians have stopped performing on college campuses. Stand-up feels like those 70’s TV specials where Evil Knievel would ride a motorcycle through a burning hoop.
by Anonymous | reply 193 | March 28, 2022 4:06 AM |
So many people thinking this was staged. It wasn't staged, obviously. Chris Rock could call the cops but you can't call the cops on black people at the Oscars, or anywhere else, it's unfashionable.

It wasn't a White House State dinner, hell... it wasn't even the Kennedy Center Honors, it was the fucking Oscars. Calm down. If this is your idea of class and sophistication that is above reproach, then you don't know actors or you need to get out more. And one final note, Will and Jada are phonies who make it very hard to root for them on anything, but some of you are just too much with all this.

B) That wife has made a laughing stock of him for over 20 years with her bullshit and musings.
C) In his speech, he says that actors have to go through all of these humiliations. No - no they don't. You've been humiliated and made fun of because of your wife. SEE POINT B.
D) Shoving your talentless kids down our throats and having them talk about themselves like their the next coming of Jesus is nauseating and offputting. Again, SEE POINT B that allowed this shit to happen.
You've done this to yourself. And now, if he says he has never cheated on Jada - he should probably clarify that he never cheated on her WITH A WOMAN. Or it's some weird reference to their open marriage and swinging which was under her permission.

I think Jada has ass cancer, can't prove it, but perhaps she's in chemo.
She's also worn white woman hairstyles her entire life which involve extensions, glue, tight braids, and are generally bad for your hair and scalp.
Obviously, this is the fault of white people, which induces rage. Say anything about black women's hair and it's a microaggression, say it on stage, and people lose their god damned minds, cementing the reality that black people on average are fucking crazy about certain topics.
I'm not saying white people are not crazy but you never saw a white person pull that shit on an awards show and then win the brass ring.

Will and Jada's son Jaden Smith didn't reference the slap in his Twitter post, but he didn't speak out against it, tweeting, 'And That's How We Do It.'
Later, he included a photo of himself in a car wearing sunglasses and noted that his father's acceptance speech made him emotional.
'My Dads Speech Made Me Cry,' he wrote.

Jimmy Kimmel
'What was the vegas line on the fresh prince punching little penny in the face?' he tweeted.

Accepting (or encouraging) physical violence as a response to speech is an indisputably fascist outlook.
The people who are “Team Will” remind me of the folks who thought that Wilkes-Barre guy was justified in executing two people in cold blood because they called him a queer.
Also funny to see how phony Will’s macho tough guy pose is—I doubt he’d have walked up to slap Dwayne Johnson or Jason Mamoa for making that joke.

[quote]Accepting (or encouraging) physical violence as a response to speech is an indisputably fascist outlook.
There have been innumerable cases of when someone's right to free speech infringed on the rights of others, to the point that their speech needed to be stopped. Putin's propaganda and lies to cover the rape, murder, and kidnapping of Ukrainian citizens, for example.
I am absolutely not saying this about Chris Rock's joke. What I'm saying is that the broad stereotype of "all speech should be free from consequences regardless of what was said" is not a noble philosophy and it's not entire defensible. Bringing up your personal internet edgelord philosophy about free speech as though it were fact is ridiculous.

Academy Issues Statement After Will Smith-Chris Rock Oscars Slapping Incident
by Anonymous | reply 294 | March 28, 2022 5:44 AM |
The Oscars are under the domain of SAG/AFTRA though, right? Rock should probably bring up the incident to them, he was at work and got injured, and he's union.
Everyone is screaming for jail time and heads served up on platters, but give it a few days to shake out. I'd guess Smith won't be back for next year's Oscars (at the request of the Academy) unless they have some kind of mea culpa planned to try to smooth things over.

I think Jada really should have just owned it, laughed, and made some 'strong arm' movements, to show how she's a bad ass, and that maybe could kick Chris Rock's ass too. That would have been the best way to handle it.

Stupidly, because America is so racialized, this is raw meat (see this thread already). But condoning it is ridiculous--it's a mini version of honor-based, Hatfield-and-McCoy, Crips-vs-Bloods violence--you disrespect mine, I attack you.
I wonder how those people in the audience would've reacted if Mel Gibson had slapped Ricky Gervais.

Well, there's a difference in context between the two, r305. Gibson had a history of being violent and making threats, for starters.
A lot of us aren't condoning it so much as getting exasperated at the people who are losing their shit about it, exaggerating what happened, making it political, using it as an excuse to be racist (like r306, who posted just as I was typing this).

Probably why McDormand didn’t show up to give him the Oscar. She knew her friend Denzel was going to lose and didn’t want to deal with asshole Smith. I think a lot dislike or have no use for the Smiths in Hollywood, but he was able to overcome it in the vote tally because he’s made a lot of money for people in the industry and his nice guy persona with a cliched, sugar coated film about the Williams sisters father. That all changed tonight. This will be forever tied to his Oscar win. The one poster who said cunt Jada has him by the balls is absolutely correct. Sad that for all the talk of lack of Black presence in film and award nominations, and now an Oscars night that is chock full of talented Black people, it ended with violence, profanity, and what looks like, in Will Smith, an emotional breakdown. Sad because it gives fuel to bigots and will embarrass many in the Black community.
I long for the days when we are past racial divides and everyone can just be their authentic selves without fear of being targets of bullies. But, you have to admit, this Oscars had it all, including an elderly woman in a wheelchair in what appeared to be the early stages of dementia.
Black Americans have a huge presence in our culture, their influence in sports, music, language, literature, and other areas is profound. They are among the oldest of American groups, having been part of our history for over 400 years. They are only 13.4% of the US population but their impact is much larger. I'm sure Will Smith is in pain tonight, his tears revealed a troubled man. It has to feel terrible to have lost it in front of millions of people.
Chris Rock was off his game after the slap but he managed to keep going with professionalism and class.

I feel strangely traumatised by all of this (yes, I'm being dramatic). Strangely, it's not as much by the slap/hit as it is the way Smith yelled and swore afterward, and then doubled down and did the same thing. It was like he was possessed. It was scary. On one hand, I feel bad for the guy, because he's going through something. On the other hand, you're filthy rich, have had access to everything for decades, and you were widely predicted to win (and won) a major award in your industry just minutes away. You couldn't manage a little class? Chris Rock was making jokes about people in the room (something that humourless industry needs more of), including Smith's wife. Do we honestly think he would have made the joke had he known about Jada's condition? I doubt it.
I've been watching the Oscars for decades. I'm pretty invested, which is why I can't oddly stop thinking about this. This has certainly given us something to talk about. I know they have been circling the drain for a while, but this may have just expedited things. This event was just a sad reminder of that reality. But, Hollywood will defend Smith's petulance, I imagine.

In 2016, Chris Rock hosted the Academy Awards, where both Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, were the butts of some pointed barbs. Rock made fun of Pinkett Smith’s public avowal to boycott the show after another year of all-white acting nominees.
“Jada said she’s not coming. I was like, ‘Isn’t she on a TV show?’ Jada’s gonna boycott the Oscars? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited!”

So the Academy has been losing buckets of money the last few years because viewers have dropped off the cliff. I am sure this little accident is no doubt going to give them that viral moment they have been dreaming about. But it will backfire. No one is talking about who won what awards. Even the media trying desperately to remind people it was about more than a fight talking about the rest of the night just falls on deaf ears.
Well congratulation Hollywood, you go the attention you wanted. Of course you traded your social status and class for Jerry Springier style label you will now forever be known for but hey, money is money and that's all you ever cared about anyway right? So just own it. Be the ghetto trash kind of show you are now.
You lost the worlds respect the instant the reward physical violence on stage with an award. Well done. Now everyone can point to this forever as a reason to never take your claims of social injustice seriously ever again when you fail to do something about it in your own house.

The HOOD? This was Will Smith who has been to so many of these events without incident. I'm still stunned. People trying to say he was "going through" something. Honey, we're all going through something all the time. If he was super angry and rage-y and offended and triggered, I get that. People feel that way. Still, people control themselves.
I'm not really sure people are giving him a pass because he's black. There's been criticism from a broad spectrum. If anything, I do think the criticism, while rightfully serious, would have been even MORE heightened if Chris Rock were not a black man himself. Basically for those who think the racial angle is "Will's not being vilified enough because he's black," I'd argue that it's really "Will Smith isn't being vilified enough because the victim was a fellow Black man." And one he has history with.
THough who knows. There's criticism/vilification for the actual hit/violence. Which doesn't necessarily correlate directly with the criticism/vilification of the spectacle - doing it on stage, at the Oscars, live.

Smith LAUGHED at the joke. It's on tape. Then Jada SCOWLED. A performative SLAP followed. And finished with a RAGING fucking outburst in front of a room of peers.
There's no justification for violence. No justification for assault. ESPECIALLY OVER A FUCKING JOKE.
But look at Woke Twitter and you'll see the little shithead mobs defending it over her "illness" and "alopecia". Give me a fucking break. It's not a death sentence, or particularly uncommon. ALL bald men suffer from a form of it, yet those jokes are open season. I hope Rock makes a meal out of this.

Will and Smith were treated like the King (Richard) and Queen of the Oscars tonight.
They were better feted than Beyonce and Jay-Z who always get the premium treatment.
And yet, they basically changed the whole tone of the evening.

Classic Scientology anger, and misdirected as usual. Also, what a dainty pussy for "slapping". If you are going to hit someone, hit them.
Chris Rock has said he won't press charges. Not surprised, but that's unfortunate. That Smith cunt needs to give his Oscar back.
Tacky, tacky, tacky and TRASHY. I don't care WHAT condition his wife has and since when does he really care?. She can speak up for herself, as we've all seen. This was fucking piss poor and I hope to see the last of this rat fucker clam.

by Anonymous | reply 419 | March 28, 2022 8:42 AM |
This is why I stopped watching the show years ago. I woke up one day and realized what a wast of time to spend thinking about rich people patting themselves on the back over and over while acting like selfish idiots with the emotional maturity of a 12 year old. I only found out about this after coming here to the DL.
So I think in a too little too late shallow attempt to save face, the Academy will clamp down next year making it the most boring show ever. You cant top that Jerry Springer moment. They will continue to lose millions of viewers like they have the last few years.

That's fine r351, and thank you for the information, but my point stands. Not that long ago, DL would be full of jokes about this, because Will Smith smacking Chris Rock on live TV is fucking hilarious.
No one on DL jokes anymore, though. There are no jokes. There's nothing but trolls trying to turn this into a crime of epic proportions ("he could have been killed! Chris Rock was as defenseless as someone in a wheelchair!") while also being as racist as possible ("black ghetto thug n*ggers are ruining the Oscars, we must make them all white again!").
Earlier in this thread someone joked "Even at a Dean Martin roast, people weren't getting slapped!" and he got scolded by people grimly informing him that THIS IS NOT A ROAST, which was just another way of saying THIS IS NOT FUNNY, HOW DARE YOU.
Then when Will Packer made a snide joke about it, it happened again. HOW DARE HE, THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE TO JOKE ABOUT.
It's not unacceptable to joke about, it's fucking hilarious, and because all of you grim, humorless, nasty trolls want us to be outraged, you won't let us laugh about it. You'll whine incessantly about SJWs not letting people make jokes anymore, but you're doing the exact same fucking thing.

And this fucker won best actor and the proceeded equate his character Richard Williams protecting his family to justify that he was protecting his family. From what? A dumb joke?
People are now going to argue that Hollywood and the Academy Awards has twisted itself into a pretzel to make itself more inclusive over the last several years, and this is the behavior we have to expect from those getting nominated. The fact that people are attempting to normalize violence because a rich, black man perpetrated it for an audience of millions on live tv in America is revolting.
As someone else pointed out, the fact that the man who carried out the violence was immediately thereafter celebrated and acknowledged with a standing ovation, and he carried on partying! is no different than the violent outbursts exhibited at political rallies, egged and abetted by certain fascist political candidates in the USA’s recent history.
Following the #MeToo era, the Academy adopted a code of behaviour for its recipients. Will Smith’s violent behaviour at the VERY ceremony where he was promptly then awarded an Oscar violated that code.
Thus, his Oscar can be revoked. And it should be. If the Academy does not address this, then they are hypocritical liars, and they deserve to be completely debased.
As does Will Smith. His actions at the 2022 Oscars were appalling. He overshadowed other people at the event and made it all about HIM and his fragile masculinity.

Smith showing up at after parties reinforces his belief that he can do whatever he wants. Not leaving the theater after showing his ass to the world meant he didn't think what he did was anything that needed to be addressed. Ditto returning to the stage to accept the award. I think FCC might be a bit laxed these days compared to the time Rocket was on SNL. Jenny Slate dropped an F bomb on SNL and wasn't fined by FCC due to some kind of clause regarding TV shows that air after 10 pm having less strict rules to adhere to.
by Anonymous | reply 591 | March 28, 2022 12:51 PM |
Several different things going on here.
First of all, to the racists who’ve infested this board, who’ve used this as an excuse to post their vile, disgusting (and usual) remarks: fuck off. Fuck right off. You’ve never been welcome here. You’re shit that’s learned to breathe and walk; but you’re still stinking of the shit you’re made from.
Secondly, what Will Smith did. Totally unacceptable, and what a bunch of craven sycophants were in the audience, not calling him out. It was a joke. If you don’t like the joke, heckle or walk out. Nobody has the right to walk up and physically assault the comedian. It’s set a truly nasty precedent, and the organisers should’ve sent in security to escort Will Smith and party out of the event, with no re-admittance. The audience should’ve turned on him: verbally and not physically, in case I need to say that. The organisers should’ve refused to present an award to him, even if it meant going on stage and saying ‘due to events this evening, we have cancelled the category’. And, yes, he should’ve been arrested for assault.
Thirdly, the utter hypocrisy of Will Smith. Hiding behind his god. A god whose message was ‘turn the other cheek’, not ‘slap the comedian’s face’. Claiming to stand up for his family and defend them, like some 50s White suburban heterosexual, putting the little lady firmly in the kitchen. His wife has agency, she’s capable of standing up for herself, she doesn’t need a man to do it for her. And let’s not forget that this makes Will Smith the bully: standing behind the ‘prestige’ he might have as a money spinner for White Hollywood, to get away with conduct that should be acknowledged as unforgivable. And bullying, and unmanly (if you like) to pick on someone who’s hardly going to start a fist fight anyway, and to give them a big girly slap before flouncing off, smirking.
What an appalling evening. Just shameful.
