Airport free Wi-Fi won't let me access Datalounge

I have found Datalounge blocked in many free Wi-Fi networks, including Target.

I fly in and out of Sky Harbor a lot (last time in Feb) and have never had this issue. Are you in a fancy new private American Express lounge or on a general concourse?

I believe you though, OP, as I was in a Marriott watching “White Lotus” on my HBOMax and was kicked out about 30 seconds into Steve Zahn’s swollen balls.

I have found Datalounge blocked in every Cafe Nero store. I live in Boston

I would be afraid to use Datalounge in public in case someone would see it.

I wonder if it's decided by the airport lounge, cafe nero etc. itself or if they use some sort of service - ALTHOUGH it could be the the very graphic photos often right on the front page of datalounge (which I totally love) but I could see some places not wanting a child to see those images walking around in a coffee shop or airport where it is relatively easy to see things over someone's shoulder

Don't you have unlimited data? I do. Costs a fortune, but it's worth it. You can surf as muxh as you want without worrying about bad wifi and blocked websites.

I tried to access it at work one time and it was blocked saying “Adult Content.”

In other news, this Phoenix airport is a goddamned mess.

It's really crowded, packed walkways, packed restaurants, wall-to-wall people.

And I just passed by a lady with her "service dog" who just took a shit on the main walkway. She was standing in the middle of the walkway blocking foot traffic with all of her luggage, her dog, her dog carrier while she picked up the poop.

And it's only 9:30.

The crazy thing to me was I was at an airport and it wouldn't let me access Datalounge on their wifi but grindr and sniffies worked.

That's what I have a problem with. An internet provider even free wi-fi should be neutral in speech. Just like phone companies can't blacklist numbers of racist organizations. Hate speech is still free speech.

When you use Wi-Fi in a store or cafe and you visit a website your ISP doesn’t show up, does it? It’s the ISP of the shop, right?

I use to volunteer at a Catholic hospital before Covid. I would turn off WIFI and still read Datalounge between helping patients.

In Feb on the United concourse there was only ONE place to have a beer and eat. The line to get in was at least 15 minutes long.

Meanwhile there was a new glass-enclosed American Express members place but you couldn’t come in unless you had an AmEx or signed up.

It's not different from Twitter or Facebook with the exception that there's somewhat less moderation, however I've seen vile stuff on other social media that stays up until/if someone reports it. It's not an automatic process.

Muriel should probably make the greyed-out posts not show up in search engines, though - the slider that controls the content you see seems to be ignored if the person isn't logged in.

About 15 years ago I was working at a school and opened DL and wasn't paying attention, and the photo of Joan Crawford showin' the beaver in her pre-fame days was slowly loading on the browser. I panicked and turned the bright all the way down so the screen went black. There were no students in the room, thankfully, but there was a coworker, who I don't think noticed but I'm not sure.

Learned a powerful lesson that day.

Probably a good idea. As it is, if you go to a thread when you're not logged in, everything shows up. It might be grayed out for us or even deleted, but someone who finds DL from a Google search and hasn't logged in will still see the offending posts, with no indication it's been grayed out or redtagged.

I would disagree that the hate speech on here is only a tiny percentage of posts. Topics that generally don't appeal to the rightwingers and hate speech aficionados just don't take off here anymore. Most threads are about politics or crime and they attract the bigots, but we can't even get a normal thread going about theater, movies, awards, music or gossip anymore. Even if it were a small percentage of posts, it still happens enough that whatever software they use is going to hit an absolute ton of keywords on DL that will trigger the site to be blocked.

To be fair, DL is not a site of mostly bitchy gossip any more, from the right wing trolls to the explosion of transphobic posts it's probably triggered the sack of hate filled cunts detection algorithm that content filtering proxies use. According to Trend Micro DL is rated "18+ Tasteless"...

Agree. I had a 2 hour connection there last weekend and there are not enough places to eat or drink for a terminal that handles such a high volume of passengers. American is funneling too many passengers through that the airport can't reasonably accomodate.

I never use free wifi at airports, except on international stopovers. Abu Dhabi and Narita have great internet lounges.

But then I’m not a rich professional asshole, or a family man/woman, or a local official or minor celebrity with any kind of rep to protect, and no one really knows me around the place I live, so it hardly matters if someone peeps me circling the green & black circle of Hell.
