Richard Madden is 9 toes out of the closet so it can’t be him.
Not Tom Hiddleston, please not that bum fuck

Since the Bond franchise is dead and well on its way to decay, they'll no doubt dump the decayed bones in "diversity/inclusion" acid with Dinklage or some other guaranteed-to-be-a-financial-nightmare actor.

No Time to Die grossed almost $800 million during a pandemic. I think they’ll carry on.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 24, 2022 4:20 PM |
R5 And then there's something that passes for reality . . .
As Variety reports: “The movie cost more than $250 million to produce, at least $100 million to promote and tens of millions more to postpone over 16 months. Insiders say ‘No Time to Die’ needs to make closer to $900 million to break even, a feat that would have been realistic had a global health crisis not entirely upended the theater industry. As a result, the film now stands to lose $100 million in its theatrical run, according to sources close to production.

Richard Madden looks great - for a 50 year old.
Maybe Hiddleston’s impending marriage to a hot biracial chick will work in his favour among the Henry Goldings and Rege-Jean Pages in the running.

by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 24, 2022 4:52 PM |
Sadly, a non-bulked up Cavill is the embodiment of Bond visually. But he would have to do a lot more work developing his charisma with women and the camera while he's moving.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 24, 2022 4:53 PM |
R13, why not?
Whoever it is has to be able to look gritty and brutal while also cleaning up and carrying himself well in a suit.
Barnes may actually be slightly too delicate looking, but he has the general traits.

by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 24, 2022 5:08 PM |
R18, no but I just don't think the coming generations, for whom this coming Bond will be their Connery, give much of a damn about those old idiotic animosities.
We should be willing to stretch horizons. Barnes is British, sounds British and if he can act the role and looks right, it should not matter.
What is much more important is that they need to channel the franchise more strongly towards spying and intrigue. We are too spoiled for choice on action heroics now. Show us something new, or old, as when spies were portrayed as masters of disguise and Rico Suave' attitude.

As I said in the other thread. Who ever plays him has to have an air of menace about him. Someone who is cool, but has that "coiled snake" thing. He has to be charismatic. People notice him. And he has to have a lethal charm. You have to look at him and know he's watching everything and the wheels in his brain are always turning, yet he comes off as chill. I love Idris but he's too old....and he lacks the suave quotient Bond has to have. And the Menace. You know, Bond started it all, but as this genre has evolved I think they rely too much on muscle. Look at the Bourne Franchise. Matt Damon was a dolt. All brawn. I hate to say it, but the thing that comes closest to the old Bond is the Tom Cruise MI series.

People don't want an emotional bond. They want someone who is a thrilling bastard. Who gets away with things that are impermissable now. It's supposed to be fantasy. All this tosh of 'bringing him into the modern world' needs to be ditched. There can still be the diversity - that was even there with Fleming - but there needs to be a dirty edge to the sex. Why else would 50 Shades Of Grey sell a squillion if women didn't hunger for it?
by Anonymous | reply 68 | March 26, 2022 3:43 PM |
R68, lol, if they really hungered for dirty sex, they'd just watch porn instead of reading romance novels

What's wrong with James Norton?
by Anonymous | reply 70 | March 26, 2022 5:54 PM |
Luke Evans is great, and Dan Stevens is great.
But not for Bond. Luke has the devilish air of a villain, and Stevens as a fellow agent. He's too Golden boy for Bond, even though he keeps trying. to rough-tough his image up.
Idris is plenty suave, but just too old and needs to be moving himself back into serious work like what he did for the Wire or Luther. The span of this action heroic shit is small and he is much better than that, even if the paycheck is good.

Harry Styles was never on anyone's radar. Complete nonsense.
Of the backup list a name that is getting more talked about and emerging as an alternate is Charlie Hunnam.
He was down the pecking order but Barbara has taken a shine to him when she met him recently. She still is fixed on her choice but she is open to others if circumstance warrants and Charlie is now up there in top two or three
Barbara wants it over and announced by May

Ewan McGregor is 50 so your pick is out of the running, Surviving Klan Granny. If they wanted a Bond in his 50s they'd have kept Daniel Craig.
Boomers and the Silent Generation are all dying off and Bond needs to appeal to younger generations now, so a 35 year old bisexual like Richard Madden would be ideal. He's extremely attractive and has that brooding menace too.

R93 Charlie Hunnam?! What a strange choice, if true. What has he been in that would give anyone the impression he would make a suitable Bond?
He seems too rough and tumble for the role. He looks like one of those British people who got a lot of their looks from the Saxons.
Can he do suave?
by Anonymous | reply 106 | March 27, 2022 1:12 PM |
Agree with R106. He would have to shave the goatee and muster some gravitas.
'Hunnam suffers from dyslexia, as well as a fear of germs and dirt in general.' (Wikipedia)
by Anonymous | reply 107 | March 27, 2022 2:35 PM |

Gandy has already done adwork where he discusses his love of the UK.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | March 27, 2022 3:53 PM |
David Gandy has never been cast in a TV show or a full length film, so nope. He does have exactly the right look but his six item long acting resume consists of shorts and video games.

R111, everyone has to break in somehow.
He's not known for his other work, so preconceptions of the audience won't be an interference.
His adwork already displays all of the qualities associated with the character
And honestly, most Americans did not recognize Craig at all, even with over a couple of decades of acting work on his resume.

Tom Hardy and Luke Evans are not bad ideas. Older, yes. But still viable.
Henry Cavill makes me laugh! Not on purpose. I just cannot take him seriously. He cannot act. Not at all, and he clearly is not aging well.

James Norton--looks like an artist or intellectual.
Rege'-jean Page actually looks too young and clean cut!
Edward Holcroft-slightly ponderous and brooding.
Tom Bateman works in corporate office or government, but not as a spy.
Oliver Jackson-Cohen works in some angles, not in others. Shoot carefully, I guess.
Nicholas Hoult is a punk, prep school kiddie. Too clean and pretty.
Jamie Dornan is almost always hiding his jawline with facial hair, so what's wrong with it?
Already mentioned Madden being too short and sensitive.
The rest seem either too old or too well known from heavily promoted work elsewhere.

R131 James Norton is masculine? Are we talking about the same James Norton?
I'll admit he's not bad to look at though he doesn't do much for me. But I don't feel his looks are particularly masculine and isn't his voice a little lofty?
As for those others mentioned by R141: I could take or leave Page, he doesn't do much for me.
Edward Holcroft is attractive but is almost forgettable - like he belongs as a side character, not the lead.
I don't think Bateman has the proven chops for the role.
OJC might work.
NOT Nicholas Hoult thanks.
I don't think Jamie Dornan has quite the right look for some reason. He's stunning though, I just wonder if he's almost too Irish (if that's possible)?
Meh to Madden.

The big issue with all the possible choices is that we have no idea in what direction they will be taking the films. It's quite possible that they don't know themselves.
The Craig run really screwed things up. CASINO ROYALE featured a green 007, who then progressed up to the retired (and ultimately expired) Bond in NO TIME TO DIE. So, where do they go from here?
If the producers choose to highlight an "early" Bond, then names like Hoult or Page or Bateman make more sense. If they want a solid, experienced, "mid-period" Bond, then most of the others would be better suited (although anyone in their mid- to late 40s would seem to be out of contention simply due to age at this point).
A lot also depends on the tone they want to hit. Craig was pretty damn glum and a lighter, slicker Bond may be in the cards. (Think Moore after Connery or Brosnan after Dalton.)
by Anonymous | reply 145 | March 28, 2022 5:39 AM |
I don't know... I still can't see the Bond people picking someone like Madden, with that very transparent glass closet and love of younger men, as something they're going to give the global spotlight too...without making him go so far back into that closet he's in Narnia. And I even wouldn't be surprised to see him pressured to beard, etc. And what does that do to the current relationship? Just seems like Broccoli and company are the type to play it safe so they can sell these films to the widest audience possible, especially in markets where a Bond with just gay rumors isn't going to fly. I would think that would be too much of a liability for them. If Madden really is the front runner, and as serious about his career as he seems, I'd think he would have spent the last few years navigating things very, very differently.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | March 28, 2022 12:18 PM |
If they don't get this right, I would predict the end of this franchise. Every movie or show that isn't about superheroes is about govt agents going rogue or pulling off operations. Even the Bond films themselves have long ago started to repeat what they did before.
It's going to be tricky.

by Anonymous | reply 150 | March 28, 2022 5:12 PM |
It's kindof moved on from 'outing' though when there has been open speculation regarding his sexuality in newspapers like the Guardian, New York Times etc and he has been asked outright about it. So all that can easily be brought up again.
At the moment he is more in an Anderson Cooper (pre-coming out) and Queen Latifa situation where it is such an open secret that it may not be seen as 'outing'. Or at least he is heading in that direction.

by Anonymous | reply 152 | March 28, 2022 5:55 PM |
He may do, but it was speculated he would get a 'girlfriend' for for marvel as well, but the first thing he did was get a new twink. Been linked to one hot young man could be brushed aside, making it a pattern is a bit harder to explain away.

R152, then he should not get it. If such a role forces people to stay closeted, boycott.
And he's too short and too sensitive looking, which are more important to the case.
The public should wise up. Anyone over a certain level of attractiveness is likely to be at least bisexual if not gay. When you look that good, you get offers and sometimes take them.

It literally comes up in the first couple pages of a google search for either one of them (individually), including header pics of them together.
[quote] If he’s named as Bond, everyone will know about the twinks.
Bingo. The amount of global fame, attention, press, etc. the Bond role would bring anyone is definitely going to put a spotlight on him in a way that someone so 'private', but with a not-so-private/kind-of-obvious situation, is going to have to deal with in a way they didn't have to before, and the glass closet situation isn't going to be so easy to pull off anymore. I just get a feeling Madden is the type to not like that sort of thing. I think he wants big, A-list success, but he doesn't like the attention fame brings (at least for as long as he's closeted).
I don't think the media would 'out' him. The point I was getting at is will it 'in' him more and more, and is he ok with that? This is a major beloved global franchise headed up by one star (not an ensemble like Eternals), used to sell and cross promote, in all global markets (included those that notoriously ban anything gay related, etc.). It's going to bring massive attention to him, that people will google in this day and age, and unless they wipe out all the old evidence (which they could do, to a degree), it's going to be all right there...and people will talk. I don't think Broccoli and company are going to want that. And then what pressures do they put on him to stay in line - bearding, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | March 29, 2022 1:52 AM |

Playing a gay role and actually being gay (with a preference for twinks) are two completely different things in the context of Hollywood (sexual) politics.

[QUOTE] Playing a gay role and actually being gay
Why is there so much biphobia on this forum? Madden has had long relationships with women as well as dating Brandon and Froy. Bridgerton Season 2 just cast an out gay man as their romantic lead and nobody batted an eye.
The Boomers will soon all be dead and if Bond wants to survive it HAS to capture the interest of Gen Z. At the moment they see Bond as 'copaganda' and avoid it.

[quote] Why is there so much biphobia on this forum? Madden has had long relationships with women as well as dating Brandon and Froy. Bridgerton Season 2 just cast an out gay man as their romantic lead and nobody batted an eye.
First, we don't even know if those relationships with women were even genuine relationships, some form of bearding, or him just at that stage still 'working things out' (its been long rumored he knew he was gay/bi, and engaging in the gay life/scene even in his young adult years). Then, there's the fact that plenty of self-identifying gay men have had opposite sex relationships, but still consider themselves to be gay once they figure themselves out. The actual point being made is that, gay or bi, considering the politics of Hollywood, and massive global franchises like Bond, this is going to be a serious issue for them (regardless of if you think it is or not). That's just how Hollywood works. Still.
Bridgerton is not Bond. Two totally different products with two totally different demographics in the context of the entertainment business.
And spare us the "biphobia" line. Here's a shocker, just because someone left out the word 'bi' doesn't mean we're against it. I've written "gay/bi" when referring to Madden (and others) plenty of times.
[quote] The Boomers will soon all be dead and if Bond wants to survive it HAS to capture the interest of Gen Z. At the moment they see Bond as 'copaganda' and avoid it.
While it may be time for the Bond franchise to reinvent itself for a new generation, let's not act like having an openly gay/bi Bond is really going to happen anytime soon. If it hasn't happened with other major franchises yet, I highly doubt Bond is going to be the one to take the first leap. Those "Boomers" are still the ones in charge of this thing.
As for Bond being propaganda for cops, that's just ridiculously stupid. People know what Bond is, including Gen Z. Plenty of entertainment properties center around cops, spies, etc. and are still as popular as ever.

by Anonymous | reply 186 | March 30, 2022 7:17 PM |
Connery and Craig never projected "posh." Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan did and IMO they weren't very good Bonds. I know a lot of people liked them, but I preferred Craig most of all. The others seem out of date.
by Anonymous | reply 187 | March 30, 2022 7:52 PM |
R187 I disagree. There is a bit of an air of 'posh' in Bond, all the way back to Connery (who also had a sense of humor). Brosnan was a fantastic Bond. Craig's version is humorless and dry (but perfect for the current times that need everything 'dark and gritty').
by Anonymous | reply 188 | March 31, 2022 11:26 AM |
Craig is also my favorite.
Bond is not supposed to be truly posh, per se. Bond is supposed to be a person with working or at best middle class origins who can mingle with the posh because he was raised by a wealthy aunt after his parents died. Before that he traveled a lot with his family. This kind of backstory is what makes him such a good chameleon as a spy, able to fit in anywhere. He is not supposed to be a rich pretty boy who grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth entirely.

i predict it will be the mulatto from bridgerton, or some other mulatto in the biz.
by Anonymous | reply 238 | April 2, 2022 3:18 PM |
I'm starting to think it could be Jamie Dornan. Irish is not a prob, so long as Bond is from the UK, and Brosnan had Irish heritage.
Dornan is certainly handsome enough, and is gaining respect as an actor. I think a lot of women and gay men would fantasize about having sex with him.
Is he too pretty? Not tough enough?

Jamie Dornan is utterly expressionless and dead-eyed in literally every role. He's like a very very handsome shark.

No votes for Jack O'Connell?
Minus: short, identifies as Irish (but can obviously play English and grew up in England)
Plus: Has exactly the right swagger/energy. Can act. Is hot.
Link goes to trailer of one of his early films.

Rege-Jean Page is as strong a candidate as anyone else and maybe stronger than most. Think about this. When was the last time there was anyone like a Black hero like a secret agent? When I was a little kid there was Shaft. remember him? You'd have too be in your 40's or 50's like me to recall John Shaft. Black Panther doesn't count because that's a comic book super hero. And it made a ton of money. So maybe to energize the Bond franchise and expand the audience they chose someone different. It doesn't have to be Page. But c'mon. We sit here wracking our brains coming up with the names of all these white boys, but aside from Idris Elba or Rege-Jean Page, I haven't seen anything resembling a list of men of color. I think of Chiwetel Ejiofor or Daniel Oyelowo, There have to be others.

Both Jonathan Bailey and Rege-Jean Page are very good candidates. They both have chemistry with anyone they work with, they're both gorgeous, they can both act, and they check all the other Bond boxes. I'm suddenly Team The Bridgerton Thing on this.
by Anonymous | reply 255 | April 4, 2022 7:46 PM |
Agree with R250 even though I haven't seen him in anything. If they can find a black (or poc) dude who fulfills the brief it's just seizing the cultural moment/good PR for the franchise. Sure some will whine but it'll just be more publicity and then everyone going to see the movie can feel good and anti-racist lol.

R252 Amazon tried having a black hero in their Tom Clancy Without Remorse film and it sadly received nowhere near the same reception as Jack Ryan even adjusting for film vs series format. Amazon is a data driven company so unless doing soft things like “seizing a cultural moment” by casting a black Bond makes sense on paper we simply don’t behave that way. The fact that RGP was the lead in the most watched Netflix show ever also works against him because that makes him too well known and too many preconceived notions pose a risk to the reception of a new Bond. And whoever upthread said Amazon’s acquisition of MGM won’t impact the creative control of the James Bond franchise LOL that’s cute but that’s not how Amazon or this deal works. But by all means keep chattering away about your top pics, it’s creating more datapoints across the internet to scrape into the algorithms

Shaft in 1971, directed by the illustrious Gordon Parks, starring Richard Roundtree. He made three movies: Shaft, Shaft's Big Score, and Shaft in Africa. They are classics of the genre. and a brief 7 episodes TV series in 1973. I am well aware that Samuel Jackson made the movie in 2019. I saw it, and enjoyed the fact that Richard Roundtree played his father, the original Shaft.

It's probably a Hemsworth. No mystery there. But honestly, if it were Liam it would be a disaster because he is real pretty but he cannot act and has no charisma. Chris is too well defined. Again. Both of them have been around for a while and have generated no heat. And I like them both. And Heath Ledger remains dead. Now. If the Brit is Tom Hardy I will puke. Again well known. Has been around for a while. No heat. Madden has possibilities. Nicholas Hoult, Rege' Jean Page, and, since I am the Alwyn troll, Joe makes sense. Fact is there are several other Brits who make sense. I'm honestly getting bored with this. Announce it and be done, dammit.

I Wouldn't be surprised if they take a look at Theo James. I dismissed him at first but he may be a viable candidate. I don't like Jai Courtney. He seems like a bully.

R386, it's from The Exception (2016), a pretty solid historical thriller about former German Kaiser Wilhelm II (Christopher Plummer) in his last days of exile in The Netherlands during WWII. Courtney plays a German officer tasked with finding a British spy on the Kaiser's staff. Co-starring Lily James, Janet McTeer, Ben Daniels, and Eddie Marsan.

They need to go young: a) the turnaround for Bond movies is longer now, 3 to 5 years between films (compared to 2 years prior to the Craig era), if they want to keep the same actor for, say, six films; b) to get younger generations interested in the franchise - right now, the Bond audience skews older compared to other franchises.
by Anonymous | reply 412 | April 30, 2022 2:25 AM |
Younger people do go see the Bond films in droves still, but they do statistically have a much larger % of boomer audience membes than any other comparable franchise. They will likely want that ratio to shift by casting someone under 40.

Rene Page was good in Bridgerton but useless in Emily in Paris. He doesn't come across as tough, more as spazzy. He had chemistry with the girl who plays Daphne and that's why he did well in Bridgerton but I don't think he's a good enough actor for Bond.

Gruffudd is too old at this point
by Anonymous | reply 434 | May 3, 2022 12:48 AM |
There is definitely going to be a major MAJOR rethink. The traditional Bond fan base is aging out, and the key age group needs to brought right down into the twenties. That means the new Bond will be far younger than is usual (younger and leaner than Henry Cavill for sure, who is definite no), and the productions themselves will also be leaner and hungrier. No Time To Die was a whale of a movie in terms of costs, and while (as the Mission Impossible movies show) there is room for expensive blockbusters,Babs and Michael would be very conscious that production costs will need to brought down going forward, particularly under the new studio partner.
Cavill is 38 going on 39 -- waaay too old for the new mandate, and as stiff as a board in terms of acting, and hopeless in terms of chemistry with women. They would be looking for someone young and pliable like Harry Styles, but who also appeals to the older fan base. Tricky. Styles doesn't do that due to his antics.
by Anonymous | reply 435 | May 3, 2022 10:28 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 437 | May 3, 2022 3:56 PM |
I doubt Harry has what it takes to win the role: expertise at knocking a menopausal woman's socks off with his tongue game.
by Anonymous | reply 438 | May 3, 2022 11:59 PM |
Just to weigh in on the Styles speculation, actors with significant tattoos are/were ruled out. Barbara hates them with a passion. She will tolerate a small 'marker' or two on an arm, but she wont abide by anything larger than a cm or two in diameter. She cringes at actors/people that tattoo there upper torsos. By all means, though, continue on with all these silly suggestions.

But here's the thing. The Bond movies don't come out as frequently as they did when Sean Connery made them. How many years in between Craig's Bond movies. No one wants to see a 60 yea old James Bond. Accept the fact he will be younger. And honestly, Variety was full of shit. That is old news about Hardy, Cavill, and Elba. They have nothing so they recycle. by Anonymous | reply 455 | May 6, 2022 5:10 AM |
They want someone who is in the same position Craig was before they nabbed him. Someone who is not hugely famous, but is well known, and who has mad acting skills. IMO, I'm convinced it will be a person of color. I think Black Panther sent a loud message, that there is definitely a market. Right now there is a gap in spy thrillers.
by Anonymous | reply 456 | May 6, 2022 1:19 PM |
If they go for a "person of color" (oh how I hate that term), I'd love to see them go against the grain and cast a British South Asian actor. Pasha Bocarie (formerly on Emmerdale) probably lacks a high-enough profile, but he's gorgeous.
by Anonymous | reply 457 | May 6, 2022 3:46 PM |
Pasha is not unattractive but I find him quite plain. But I'd be all for a British South Asian actor.
by Anonymous | reply 458 | May 6, 2022 5:49 PM |
I posted the Leo Suter pics above. I never thought of him before even though I have seen him in Sanditon, Beecham and Victoria (though I didn't realize that was him when I first saw Sanditon or Beecham). But now I am firmly in his corner for this.
He is known enough and respected as an actor but not identified or tied to anything specific. He can look suave and sexy. He looks very British MI-6 like. Though he has a good body he still looks svelte yet masculine in a tuxedo. I suppose they may want to take a completely different direction, but he fits the standard James Bond type, and he may add some much-needed mischief to the mix. He also seems like a genuinely nice and down to earth guy despite what looks like a posh background (St. Paul's, Oxford).
Okay I talked myself into it. I am now Team Leo.

Nicholas Hoult or Joe Alwyn. Perfect age. Otherwise it's a non- white person. Or Tom Hardy. Or Richard Madden. Or Rege Jean Page. By the way. How old is Matthew Goode? Because he would be better than Hardy or Madden. I've been watching a couple of his movies and he is hot and a really fine actor.

Goode is 44, so same age issue as many other suggestions. He's a talented actor, but he was laughably bad in the one action film I recall him being a part of. Madden at least can convince me he's able to fight. (As can Elba and Hardy, though I only consider the former a talented actor.)

[quote]How old is Matthew Goode? Because he would be better than Hardy or Madden.
I like Matthew Goode, but he's 44, so would seem to be out of contention.
Since Barbara Broccoli has known for 3 years now that Craig would not be doing another Bond, if she's really "still looking" then something is up. Half of the contenders are aging out of the part, so I think she may have her eyes on some young pups who may still be a bit too green and/or haven't quite broken through yet. That also indicates that some of the Flavors of the Month (i.e. Rege-Jean Page) are not seriously in contention, otherwise wouldn't she just snatch them up and be done with it?
by Anonymous | reply 483 | May 7, 2022 4:35 AM |
They just rebooted Bond and then killed him off. How the series continues is up in the air. They have to decide how the story continues before they decide who continues it.

by Anonymous | reply 505 | May 8, 2022 4:53 PM |
Given the budget is likely to be pulled in, particularly in the first film given the risks of a new face, AND the new studio who EON have to deal with, good acting and plotting are cheaper than massive sets, which they could afford in No Time To Die with the certainty of Craig's popularity. I'm still amazed that the vast algae tank set, that took up the entire 007 stage, and would have cost the budget of some small movies, only got about 2 or 3 minutes of screen time in the final edit. That's an extravagance we won't be seeing again for a while.

R507, it isn't racist to discuss the attributes, including physical attributes, of a new actor playing an iconic role. The same discussions were had when they cast Jodie Comer.
It's also a discussion to be had if fans view this as just being "woke" and not a good fit. I know nothing of this actor but he is on a popular show in the UK, Bad Education. At least I think it's popular. Is he gay? I just saw a video of him as himself in a promo vid and he seems adorable. He could be a fun Doctor.

Fassbender is also a serious race car driver. Currently part of a Le Mans team and enjoying it. He's 45. If they decide to make him Bond, He will get ten good years at it. He has that air of menace and humor. I think he'd be good. Hardy has no discernable sense of humor. He has carb face.

Neither of them can do charming. That's why neither can carry a movie that isn't a comic book franchise

Chris Hemsworth can be hilarious. And Charming. And Fassbender is a married man with a child and has settled down very much since he stopped drinking many years ago.

Hunny, no one was worse with women than Sean Connery. Long after his Bond days were over, he was still getting busted for beating women and drunkenness. He was a pig.

Check him out in Guy Ritchie's belly-laughing gangster caper, ROCKnROLLA," R519 (co-starring Gerard Butler, Idris Elba and Mark Strong). Stay tuned through the end credits for even more surprise hilarity.

Young James Bond is almost certainly what they'll go for.

I hope whoever it isn’t past 30. I don’t want it to be someone late 30’s/40 who will only be able to do a one or two movies before aging out and they have to go through this long ass search again.

Gen Z demanding Bond be some 20 something from the likes of the CW network by the sounds of it.
Someone from Teen Woolf?
Sorry Gen Z but it aint all about you.
by Anonymous | reply 531 | May 10, 2022 7:07 AM |
R531 I’m not Gen Z - I’m 40 years old and even I want someone younger. There’s no point in having someone around my age who will age out fast and then we’re back at square one. Someone younger will be able to stick around for several movies.

R532 probably wants someone like Timothy Chalamet. LOL.
by Anonymous | reply 533 | May 10, 2022 10:54 AM |
If they have to go younger, may I suggest R531 someone called Froy Gutierrez, I heard he is very good, especially with the ladies .
by Anonymous | reply 534 | May 10, 2022 11:16 AM |
Bond is a man's man if you will. He has to be in his 30's to convey that hyper masculinity.
Getting someone just out of twinkdom is absurd.
by Anonymous | reply 535 | May 10, 2022 1:31 PM |
Agreed. I don't necessarily mind someone in their 40s if they seem sufficiently vigorous, but 20s is too young. No twentysomething can convey the requisite world weariness and savvy except maybe Dakota Fanning, and the world sure isn't ready for *her* as James Bond.
by Anonymous | reply 536 | May 10, 2022 2:11 PM |
Bond will be a youngish woman and the whole first movie will be about her F to M transition.

We don't want an Australian surfer playing Bond, so no to the Hemsworths.
Joe Alwyn is getting savage reviews for Conversations with Friends. He's just not charismatic and dynamic enough to play Bond.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | May 11, 2022 9:02 AM |
I think a younger Bond makes total sense, and I think that's the way they will go. As well as a fresh take on the concept. If they want the franchise to survive as an ever viable, relevant property, then they have to make the franchise work for the next generation. So some evolution of the whole Bond concept will need to happen, eventually. Considering they ended the Craig series with a quite a real 'end' to the character, hitting the full reboot button would make sense now.
I still highly doubt someone like Harry Styles would get it. He's def not the Bond persona. But someone like Madden seems too late now too. Plus he may be 35, but he already looks 45. And, at least to me, he seems like he would be 'more of the same', rather than real fresh take. But who knows, maybe they just want 'more of the same'...

a non binary Bond, a transgender boss, and an ensemble of POC cast!
by Anonymous | reply 547 | May 11, 2022 10:12 AM |
It will be both younger and lighter. There's been criticism that the Craig era was too dour, and dug itself into a hole: there's a desire to bring back -- particularly with the world getting darker -- the piss-take cheekiness that English humour excels at. So the actor selected will have to deliver that well. Methinks it will be someone in the Harry Styles mode: he's inherently cheeky, and doesn't take himself too seriously. Audiences respond to that. That's why I'm certain Henry Cavill doesn't have a hope. It's just not his persona. He's too leaden. The humour will also distinguish the films from the Mission Impossible franchise, which has been edging in on their territory, and which they'd be very conscious of. The only thing currently separating them is the stylistic elegance of Bond. So they need to widen the gap between the brands.

Alwyn comes across OK in Conversations with Friends. It is the story itself that has been described as disappointing and thin, and not worth 10 episodes, and not up to the standards of Normal People. I mean, he doesn't stand out as being awful. So he hasn't hut himself. One review described him as "a dashing romantic lead." The story itself is crap. No one will remember or care. I've seen him in 4 movies and he was fine. In fact in a couple he was very good. Operation Finale, Billy Lynn's Long Half time Walk, The Favourite, and May Queen of Scots.

Austin Butler would have got it ages ago had he been English. Harry Styles would have got it had he been less successful and famous as a singer. Both have exactly the right look and Styles is an athlete who could do a lot of his own stunts. He just got fired out of a circus cannon and walked on a tightrope for his most recent video.

Exactly. With the way they take so fucking long choosing someone and if they still need to write a script, it will be another 2 years before they even start filming (if not longer).

by Anonymous | reply 564 | May 12, 2022 4:36 AM |
Harry Styles is promoting another music video that has him at least half naked and cuddling a baby. Theo James is premiering the Time Traveler's Wife with Rose Leslie for HBO. I don't think either one is a contender for Bond. But out of those two I'd lean towards James. Henry Golding seems very much a possibility. So does Rege Jean Page.
by Anonymous | reply 565 | May 12, 2022 2:45 PM |
A black or asian Bond ain't gonna happen, so Page and Golding can put their resumes back in their pockets.
Eon (the Bond production house) had enough trouble trying to roll back the "this movie is gonna be woke" scare with No Time To Die, after Phoebe Waller-Bridge was announced as one of the writers, and then the first trailer cut to showcase a black woman belittling Bond. They couldn't have made a bigger mistake if she was trans and Craig sucked her cock, and they soon knew it. I'm sure Barbara and Michael, and the studio and distributors were alarmed by the scale of the pushback, which was magnified by lazy journos looking for angle. It cost the franchise major goodwill with the existing older male fan base, which is their core constituency. Yes, they urgently need to expand the fan base now to younger viewers, which they're full cognizant of, but there's no way they can now afford to risk pissing it off the core fans with stunt casting that could be tagged, rightly or wrongly, as wokery. They've just crawled out of that nightmare: they wouldn't want to go back in. They're also conscious that with the uniqueness of the franchise being nibbled away at by competitors, it's the very Englishness of the brand which adds distinction and appeal.
by Anonymous | reply 566 | May 12, 2022 3:10 PM |
I guess r566 is the kind of person who thinks giving a black actor a supporting role in a movie is "woke"
I didn't hear many complaints about the actual movie, just the stupid pre-release buzz that made it seem like Lashana Lynch was the new James Bond when she was just taking over "007"
by Anonymous | reply 567 | May 12, 2022 3:38 PM |
I think Naomi Harris is terrific. And Lashana Lynch has great screen presence. But shoot the messager R567 to flag your marvellous and flawless virtue. To repeat: the key market badly responded to the 1st trailer cut of a woman belittling Bond. That she was also black, didn't help. The key market pushed back with the message that you can update Bond without neutering him. When the movie came out it wasn't particularly woke, except Bond had been turned into mushy husband material. But social media damage had been done.
by Anonymous | reply 568 | May 12, 2022 3:56 PM |
Yes, because if one woman yells at him one time that means he's neutered!
The whining about virtue signaling just makes you sound like the leader of the Matt Gaetz fan club.
by Anonymous | reply 569 | May 12, 2022 5:19 PM |
It's James fucking Bond. Not a purse holder. If you want to please your stakeholders, and ensure you make money, you don't pussy whip James Bond. And it wasn't just a 'buzz'. The endless social rants on the perception of wokism (pick any: this one at the link scored half a million views) profoundly damaged the marketing campaign, as did the endless Bond goes woke articles. It would have spooked them. They made $750 mil in pandemic, which was an incredible achievement against all the naysaying, but that first trailer and the storm it provoked likely cost them millions more in lost ticket sales from their core male market. That's what a few seconds of a scene without context in a trailer can do. That's why they will surely be steering a different safe course this time.

Bond needs to be 6ft, muscled, dark hair, light eyes, under 35. No dodgy characters like Theo James who started out in kids' franchises or milksops like Alwyn who've never carried off a leading role with aplomb. Danielle Craig had been the lead in cool films like Layer Cake and Sylvia.
