#thoughtsandprayers

for his demise

by Anonymousreply 1March 20, 2022 11:19 PM

With an infection causing flu-like symptoms. (I wonder if it’s COVID?)

by Anonymousreply 2March 20, 2022 11:20 PM

Can you just imagine is good ole Joe gets another appointment to the SC and this time it is to replace a conservative. Actual war might break out.

by Anonymousreply 3March 20, 2022 11:22 PM

But, it's an election year for the next two years, or maybe six...

by Anonymousreply 4March 20, 2022 11:24 PM

🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽

by Anonymousreply 5March 20, 2022 11:24 PM

Dream on. That piece of shit will live to be 110.

by Anonymousreply 6March 20, 2022 11:25 PM

I said this in the Justice Breyer retirement thread, but the timing of his announcement was unusual. Typically, Justices retire at the end of the term (summer). But there’s a tradition that only one Justice will retire at once. If Justice Thomas is in poor health, Breyer may have announced his retirement early to give Justice Thomas some space to make a summer announcement.

by Anonymousreply 7March 20, 2022 11:26 PM

What were the rumors re: his being ill? Weren't there rumors he had cancer?

by Anonymousreply 8March 20, 2022 11:27 PM

Did Ginni get it too? Did he give it to Alito as well?

Here's hoping!

by Anonymousreply 9March 20, 2022 11:28 PM

R7, you think Thomas will retire with a Democrat in the White House???? Yeah, right!

by Anonymousreply 10March 20, 2022 11:29 PM

I heard about him being ill. When they pushed through that church lady justice through.

Man, let's finish Kenji Brown through and do the fasted replacement for Thomas after he dies like McTurtle did to replace RBG

by Anonymousreply 11March 20, 2022 11:29 PM

It's so much fun to wish death on our political opponents! That's how we know we're the *good ones*! Once we're in charge we'll purge the earth of the meanies with a cleansing fire.

by Anonymousreply 12March 20, 2022 11:30 PM

Fuck off, r12.

by Anonymousreply 13March 20, 2022 11:31 PM

I hope it ain’t my kind of infection.

by Anonymousreply 14March 20, 2022 11:33 PM

I pray for his recovery

by Anonymousreply 15March 20, 2022 11:33 PM

I should've killed myself when he put it in me. After the first time, before we were married, Ralph promised never again. He promised, and I believed him. But sin never dies. Sin never dies. At first, it was all right. We lived sinlessly. We slept in the same bed, but with masks on. And then, that night, I saw him looking down at me that way. We got down on our knees to pray for strength. I smelled the whiskey on his breath. Then he took me. He took me, with the stink of filthy roadhouse whiskey on his breath, and I liked it. I liked it! With all that dirty touching of his hands all over me. I should've given you to God when you were born, but I was weak and backsliding, and now the devil has come home. We'll pray.

by Anonymousreply 16March 20, 2022 11:34 PM

Die in a grease fire, R12, you worthless sack of shit.

As for Clarence, maybe we'll get lucky and there's a twofer, and his wife will die by his side, gasping for oxygen and in agony.

by Anonymousreply 17March 20, 2022 11:36 PM

I can't find it now but I swore there was a quote of Clarence Thomas, something about liberals have been a pain in his ass for 30 years and now he plans on being a pain in their ass for 30 years to come, he ain't retiring.

by Anonymousreply 18March 20, 2022 11:36 PM

And, R7, that also gives President Biden the tiniest wiggle room to honor his promise to nominate a Black woman. As hateful as the hearings are going to be next week they will be two levels beyond vivacious when a conservative Justice is being replaced.

by Anonymousreply 19March 20, 2022 11:37 PM

Probably started in his urethra. You know he visits corner hos

by Anonymousreply 20March 20, 2022 11:38 PM

Go to hell, R12!

by Anonymousreply 21March 20, 2022 11:41 PM

The Washington Post adds at the end of their article...

The court did not disclose the reason for the delay in announcing Thomas’s hospitalization.

by Anonymousreply 22March 20, 2022 11:42 PM

Thoughts and prayers. Really praying HARD right now.

by Anonymousreply 23March 20, 2022 11:43 PM

I hope Anita Hill is laughing her ass off.

by Anonymousreply 24March 20, 2022 11:44 PM

He's a big fat Black guy. Even with his government healthcare....

by Anonymousreply 25March 20, 2022 11:44 PM

The Supreme Court has to be one of the most leakproof institutions going still. A Justice in the hospital for three days (a high-traffic hospital that a lot of the Post’s readership uses) and it doesn’t get out until they release it.

by Anonymousreply 26March 20, 2022 11:45 PM

Pneumonia?

by Anonymousreply 27March 20, 2022 11:47 PM

R2, he’s undoubtedly triple-vaxxed.

Although at 73 and obese, any hospitalization is a bad sign (or a good sign, depending on your point of view).

by Anonymousreply 28March 20, 2022 11:47 PM

I'm go chill the prosecco.

by Anonymousreply 29March 20, 2022 11:50 PM

If he dies, Ginni will expire herself over his body. Twofer.

… And the colored girls go "Doo do doo do doo do do doo..."

by Anonymousreply 30March 20, 2022 11:56 PM

His death would be fair given that the piece of shit was in on the insurrection. He's a traitor. He should be retiring in shame, but Republicans are impervious to shame.

by Anonymousreply 31March 20, 2022 11:59 PM

The Court apparently 'fessed up because he won't be hearing oral argument on some cases this week.

by Anonymousreply 32March 21, 2022 12:05 AM

The press release says he’s getting IV antibiotics, so not COVID.

by Anonymousreply 33March 21, 2022 12:05 AM

Didn’t we find out RBG’s cancer was back when she had to be hospitalized for an infection caused by her chemo port?

by Anonymousreply 34March 21, 2022 12:07 AM

Maybe it was an infected hair placed strategically on a can of Coke that he drank.

by Anonymousreply 35March 21, 2022 12:08 AM

I won't count my chickens before they're hatched (so to speak) but I remember vividly the gleeful comments on social media when RGB died. So I will be...hoping for the best.

by Anonymousreply 36March 21, 2022 12:08 AM

r12 enjoy your stage 4 cancer. You deserve it!

by Anonymousreply 37March 21, 2022 12:09 AM

If he dies, he dies...
I remember vividly the gleeful comments on social media when RGB died.

To say nothing of all the nasty wishes for her to die a painful death during her bouts with cancer from conservatives.

by Anonymousreply 39March 21, 2022 12:11 AM
I'm go chill the prosecco.

Oh, no soup for me, thanks.

by Anonymousreply 40March 21, 2022 12:12 AM

I remember those, as well.

As I said, hoping for the best. ;-)

by Anonymousreply 41March 21, 2022 12:12 AM

Any good coffin dances to recommend, fellow DLers?

by Anonymousreply 42March 21, 2022 12:13 AM

His cunt wife just said he has the same radical views as she does... so I hope his death is long and painful.

by Anonymousreply 43March 21, 2022 12:13 AM
The press release says he’s getting IV antibiotics, so not COVID.

What does this mean? They don’t give antibiotics for COVID? Or they don’t give them intravenously?

Help me out here.

by Anonymousreply 44March 21, 2022 12:13 AM

r39 and the endless parade of comments about how selfish she was for not retiring from liberals. of course, we could also look at both for the wide range of antisemitic comments too. But it seems people are more conscious of what they shouldn't say about C.T., so kudos to you for not sinking to that level.

by Anonymousreply 45March 21, 2022 12:14 AM

R44, COVID is a virus, you can't treat it with antibiotics.

by Anonymousreply 46March 21, 2022 12:16 AM

Okay, I'll say it... I hope he dies. Then we can watch the GQP do all they can to PREVENT Biden from nominating his replacement.

by Anonymousreply 47March 21, 2022 12:16 AM

Oversimplification, but antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections, not viral infections. COVID is a viral infection. Common bacterial infections include pneumonia (“the old man’s friend”) and UTIs.

by Anonymousreply 48March 21, 2022 12:16 AM

R47 here... sorry, I want to write the GQP will do everything they can to PREVENT Biden's nominee from having a hearing, as they did with Garland. Biden would nominate someone, they wouldn't be able to stop that from happening.

by Anonymousreply 49March 21, 2022 12:18 AM
Fuck off, [R12].

I’ve already dispensed with it — blocked it ages ago.

by Anonymousreply 50March 21, 2022 12:19 AM

Of course if he croaks, Mitch will say that it's an election year and we can't have a replacement.

Recall that they shoved the Handmaiden through in three weeks, during an election where people had ALREADY early voted.

But we have 50 Senators + VP so there's not much he could do. Of course, DL faves Manchin and Krystin Enema could gum up the works if their donors request it...

by Anonymousreply 51March 21, 2022 12:20 AM

Thanks r46 and r48!

by Anonymousreply 52March 21, 2022 12:20 AM

Fucking piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 53March 21, 2022 12:22 AM

r51, no they have been on board with the Justices.

by Anonymousreply 54March 21, 2022 12:22 AM

Die Uncle Tom Die!

by Anonymousreply 55March 21, 2022 12:22 AM

People don’t get pneumonia out of the blue, even 73 year olds. It’s almost always a secondary illness.

by Anonymousreply 56March 21, 2022 12:23 AM

Poor Clarence

by Anonymousreply 57March 21, 2022 12:24 AM

I hope there aren't any cords to trip over....

by Anonymousreply 58March 21, 2022 12:24 AM

Thomas has been wanting to get off the court for some years now. He was very much hoping for a Trump victory so he could announce his retirement. Once that didn't happen, he told Roberts he would stay for four more years, expecting a republican win in 2024. All the more reason for us to hold the White House then.

Alito, on the other hand, has told people he intends to stay on the court til his last day on earth. Unfortunate. He is as bad as Thomas, but he keeps more to himself. And he's not married to a vicious harpy shrew.

And yes, fuck off R12.

by Anonymousreply 59March 21, 2022 12:24 AM

RBG knew for several years she had cancer and reoccurance was probable. With her advanced age and frailty, retiring while Obama was still President, and at least early in his second term, would have been sensible. Don Young, Congressman from Alaska, recently died at age 88.

TERM LIMITS AND MANDATORY RETIREMENT AGE FOR ALL THESE POLITICIANS AND JUDGES.

by Anonymousreply 60March 21, 2022 12:28 AM

There are currently four Democratic Party Senators over the age of 77, if anyone of those four or someone younger dies or is hospitalized there goes the Democratic majority since they can not vote from their hospital rooms, until their return or replacement. Which could mean no confirmations.

by Anonymousreply 61March 21, 2022 12:29 AM

Bitch has flulike symptoms according to NYT. It's Covid with secondary pneumonia. I hope he goes the way of Herman Cain.

by Anonymousreply 62March 21, 2022 12:30 AM

I loved RBG with all my heart, but Christ she should have retired when Obama had the chance to get someone on the bench.

by Anonymousreply 63March 21, 2022 12:32 AM

He probably did, but not for the reasons we’re thinking.

by Anonymousreply 66March 21, 2022 12:40 AM

If this POS croaks — 🤷‍♂️ — expect Rethugs to become apoplectic trying to stop a second Biden appointment to the SCOTUS. It won’t work. Joe will pick a very solid candidate who will be able to sail through any background check. Someone who he knows will vote with the liberal wing of the Court, but won’t make Manchin and Synema nervous.

by Anonymousreply 67March 21, 2022 12:41 AM

Hope he dies

by Anonymousreply 68March 21, 2022 12:42 AM

Good thought here in response to why wait two days to announce when they expect him to be released in a few more days

We oughta get one after the Trump plane failed to do its job.

by Anonymousreply 81March 21, 2022 1:32 AM

ever since our beloved RBG passed away so tragically, I've been putting this out into the universe hoping Thomas or Alito would go too

it would be amazing if Biden could fill 2 seats before the midterms. Of course it's just wishful thinking for now

by Anonymousreply 82March 21, 2022 1:33 AM

R75, I care.

by Anonymousreply 83March 21, 2022 1:36 AM

R42, this is the first thing I thought of:

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 84March 21, 2022 1:37 AM

The KBJ hearings this week will be a shitshow. Expect to see Josh Hawley, Tom Cotton, and Ted Cruz calling her a terrorist sympathizer because she was a defense attorney defending Guantanamo detainees. After all of that, Auntie Concerns (Susan Collins) will have an excuse to vote no. tRump has something on Auntie Concerns and will call in this favor. He doesn't want KBJ confirmed because she ruled against him and said he wasn't a king. Maybe Murkowski will vote for her because I don't think tRump has a hold on her. Mittens will vote against her because he's a major pussy. I'm not sure what Miz Lindsey will do--he has been somewhat reasonable of late but tRump will probably rein him in too. It'll probably be the 50 Democrats voting to confirm + Kamala's tie breaker vote.

by Anonymousreply 85March 21, 2022 1:49 AM

If Collins votes against Jackson, it will be the first time she’s voted against a (non-rushed) nominee of either party. Based on this history, I’d be surprised if she’s a no.

by Anonymousreply 86March 21, 2022 1:52 AM

Mr. Thomas, your services are no longer required

by Anonymousreply 87March 21, 2022 1:53 AM

I could be wrong R86, I just wanted to put my prediction out there. I feel like there was something sketchy with Collins' re-election with campaign funding, something tRump could hold over her head.

by Anonymousreply 88March 21, 2022 1:55 AM

And here's one more, R85.

Miss Marsha is now muddying the waters with both Constitutional slander and case precedence she can't even pronounce let alone understand. Of course this is about her announcing her intention to vote no, but it is also moralizing and laying the groundwork for energizing the base in order to propel them into their next slate of legislation following the abortion bans

Squires of DL please chime in. As one of the comments on this tweet noted "she sounds a few pearls short of a jam".

I'm no RBG, I'll retire as soon as President DeSantis is sworn in in three years.

by Anonymousreply 93March 21, 2022 2:07 AM

I hate when people act like Thomas was Scalia’s lackey. Thomas is FAR crazier than Scalia. Scalia was a basic trolling (pre social media!) Republican who claimed to be an originalist because it was convenient for his political positions. Thomas actually rules according to originalism, even though half the time it means he’s advancing an insane opinion.

by Anonymousreply 113March 21, 2022 2:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 116March 21, 2022 3:06 AM

I'm shocked that Marsha Blackburn's three abortions (during her fucking black guys phase of life, incidentally) have never been reported on by any major investigative reporting. If nothing else it would be nice to hear how Marsha reconciles her former behavior (3 fucking times) with her current unwavering, ultra conservative views on abortion.

by Anonymousreply 117March 21, 2022 3:15 AM

A lot of conservative white ladies are like that, R117. This is how that works: they deserve the opportunity to have abortions because they have the possibility of a future that needs protected. Poor ladies who want or need abortions? They do not deserve that opportunity because they don't have a future to ruin.

STFU R176.

It's human nature for people to want such a hateful person dead.

When Dump was hospitalized with Covid, most people who despise that imbecile, wanted him dead.

The problem with evil people, they seem to live 'forever', despite their bad habits these types seem to live long lives. Evil people continue to shit on everyone until they day they die, they continue to cause havoc and despair.

Unless he dies in fiery plane crash or a freak accident, I don't think Dump will die anytime soon. Because of that, he remains very dangerous to US democracy.

by Anonymousreply 179March 21, 2022 12:35 PM

Ultimately, I have to side with R176. As hard as it was to resist when Trump got COVID, I refused to join my dad and others wished him dead. Just like Thomas can’t escape karma, I’m not confident in my chances of avoiding it either.

by Anonymousreply 184March 21, 2022 12:45 PM

I think R176 makes a valid point, however, considering that Thomas has been nothing but a flagrant partisan hack for years, has blatantly abused his role on SCOTUS and cheapened the standing of the court through his & the she-beast's actions, I don't necessarily disagree with a bit of celebrating when fate finally appears to be catching up with him. But realistically, he could be ill for years, not unlike RBG. So it's like too early to be celebrating.

I would say that Ginsburg's body was worn down by recurrent cancer but that she was otherwise taking care of herself. Ashkenazi Jews are very prone to various cancers but, even by their standards, RBG was unlucky; apart from that, though, genetics and other factors make Jews very long-lived.

Thomas is just a good old-fashioned obese man. Yes, he will get excellent care but a lifestyle like his catches up with you steadily and I don't see him living to 87 or anything like it (unless he makes big lifestyle changes). If he lives to 80, though, and is still in office he will become the longest-serving Justice ever (because of how young he was on appointment).

C.N.P. Action told its members to “pressure” GOP state lawmakers to appoint alternate slates of electors in states that President Joe Biden won, in an effort to get Congress to recognize those electors over the Democratic ones, claiming there was “historical, legal precedent” for doing so.

That as R190 noted, his lifestyle is finally catching up with him too.

Thomas & Ginni have lived very cushy lives off taxpayers. Ginni's right-wing extremism and activism played a significant part in the insurrection.

Unfortunately, Biden nominated an AG who is notably meek when it comes to investigating, much less indicting, any Republican that is not a commoner.

by Anonymousreply 213March 21, 2022 2:58 PM

R213 I think Biden is in real trouble with his AG pick, IF nobody from the Trump administration goes to jail, I wouldn't expect Biden to get a second term. It is well know that Biden always wanted to give Trump a pass but people were hopeful that he would stay out of the AG's business. HE did the end around by picking someone he KNEW would not go after Trump. HE thought he was slick. Biden may have just "Slicked" himself out of a second term.

by Anonymousreply 214March 21, 2022 3:02 PM

R214 If Biden wins a second term, and that is a huge IF, I would replace Garland with Preet Bharara, who I think would have the cojones to go after the Orange Turd and those around him.

And for those who think it's best to leave well enough alone, let's play the "if Dems did what Trump did" game. I have no doubt the lot of them would have already been indicted, jailed or sentenced. The fact the Dems want to turn the page, turn the other way, turn the other cheek, makes me sick. Best to play the same game the GQP is playing - that is a game with no rules, where the most ruthless win. Start bringing assault rifles to the knife fight, cause the GQP are already bringing them (bad analogy, but you get my point).

Trouble is, I don't think the Dems win in '24.

by Anonymousreply 215March 21, 2022 3:17 PM

On the plus side (ok, this would be two plusses because Thomas would be d-e-d) if Clarence suddenly dies, this could generate some support among Republicans for changing the lifetime terms of SCOTUS.

by Anonymousreply 219March 21, 2022 4:04 PM

The thing about "wishing people dead" is, yes sometimes it seems to come from a place of real personal malevolence and partisan vengefulness. But for a lot of us it comes from the total frustration we feel from the political system being so rigged by the right wing and regressive forces like dark money and flagrant disinformation being churned out 24/7 by Fox News. In the case of Trump, it seemed like there was almost nothing that could stop him from leading this entire country into an ignorant, dark hell, and in fact it nearly was true. We almost didn't win that election because of the extreme, coordinated chicanery they pulled. I don't *wish* any of these people dead, but we don't see many opportunities for such short cuts as the sudden removal of hyper-conservative leaders.

Barack Obama would be an AMAZING Supreme Court justice. We should all be so lucky.

by Anonymousreply 251March 21, 2022 11:51 PM

I’ve known Merrick Garland for nearly 30 years and was a colleague of his at DOJ in the 1990s. I appeared before him when he was on the Court of Appeals. He’s a brilliant lawyer and was a great judge. When Obama nominated him, I thought he was a superb choice to replace Scalia. Had it not been for McTurtle’s despicable obstructionism, Merrick should have and would have been confirmed to the Court in 2016.

But, that was then and this is now. He will be 70 in November. There are other, younger candidates who would do a fantastic job.

I did not think that Merrick was the best choice for AG, precisely because he is too much of an institutionalist. I preferred one of the former Democratic US Attorneys, like Sally Yates, Doug Jones, or Preet, and still do.

I did it with Mueller, again with Garland. I am sure Garland is a good and decent human being — but he so far is not showing me that he is also a leader. A real fucking leader would challenge the status quo. A real leader would uphold the law, regardless of title, status, bank account, allies. A real leader would act for the People to uphold our Constitution.

I also believe that the Dems allowing this to go on is going to bite us in the ass on a level we can’t even imagine. I am talking waaay bigger than merely losing the Senate. We are going to pay a steep price for not forcing Dems to uphold the law. It is such a travesty. I honestly think I’m really done. We could fix this!!!!! That’s what is so maddening! I’m on a freight train that’s going off a cliff, and I can’t jump off.

I would like to see Thomas reckon with Justice KBJ on the bench and in oral argument, putting paid to all of his ridiculous arguments that equate recognition of societal racism with racism itself. He has gotten away with a lot of stupid claims in opinions and dissents because there hasn’t been another black Justice to call him out.

by Anonymousreply 256March 22, 2022 12:34 AM

by Anonymousreply 257March 22, 2022 12:38 AM

Embolism will bring Clarence down, down to the grave. Let's pray for his journey to the other world.

by Anonymousreply 258March 22, 2022 12:42 AM

If KBJ gets confirmed, but Thomas dies before Breyer retires, does she automatically replace Thomas?

by Anonymousreply 259March 22, 2022 12:55 AM

No, she will be replacing Justice Breyer. There’s no distinction between the Associate Justices other than seniority, which you can’t confer.

The only time something like this would happen is if the Chief Justice died while a nominee was pending and the President wanted that nominee to become Chief. That’s what happened to Justice Roberts.

Chuck "The Fossil" Grassley did this today with nominee Jackson. Is it totally lost on these fucking morons that [italic]Loving v. Virginia[/italic] is a very recent ruling outlawing miscegenation laws and that the most radical right-wing Justice, Clarence Thomas is a black man married to a white woman!?

Should we demand Justice Thomas defend [italic]Loving v. Virginia[/italic] even though a strict constructionist would have never voted for it?

by Anonymousreply 282March 22, 2022 7:06 AM

R252, I think the problem with Garland is that he is so stuck in tradition that he's attempting to apply that tradition to unprecedented behavior unworthy of that tradition. We have never had a president who was so in violation of his oath to the point that I doubt he even understood what his oath was. He was a president who had no business being a president because he has less than no respect for the institution itself - not to mention I doubt he could even recite the constitution or tell you who wrote it . We had an anti-American, anti-constitutional, ignorant, scumbag, corrupt, undemocratic president who was corrupt before, during and after his presidency. The fact that he took classified documents that are so classified that we are not allowed to even know what they are, should've been enough to imprison that pile of shit. The fact that he attempted to overthrow the government and enabled scumbag Republicans to use his lie to change voting laws to impede the most basic right of an American citizen, should be a death sentence for him. Trump is a terrorist leader - let's not pretend he isn't.

by Anonymousreply 283March 22, 2022 7:20 AM

Yeah Garland was a great judge but he's not strong enough to be AG. Biden gave him the job out of pity because he cares about fairness and felt bad that Garland was robbed of being on SCOTUS. He's taking way too fucking long to prosecute ANY of Trump's open and shut crimes. The fact that he might not have even opened a criminal investigation into anything Trump-related a year into his job is baffling.

Many liberal voters have lost confidence in our government and justice system. Plenty of democracies around the world prosecute former leaders if they commit crimes. The fact that Trump is still not indicted for ANYTHING just turns a lot of people off because it's so unfair. If he dies without being found guilty and sent to jail that will be 1 of the biggest injustices in American history. Why should normal people follow the law if Trump is clearly above it? There's no fucking reason why Garland has to be so damn careful about everything. Just follow the rules and make decisions. Piece of shit Barr certainly wasn't worried about the institution when he made all those horrific and partisan hack moves. Garland is not a partisan hack but he's also weak. The repubs are at the point now where they will go after Biden and other Democrats should they get power back after the midterms. It won't matter what Garland does or does not do. If he finally fucking decides to go after Trump the repubs will lie and claim another false equivalence to open bullshit investigations chasing conspiracy theories about Biden, Harris, Clinton etc

by Anonymousreply 284March 22, 2022 7:36 AM

If Thomas can make it beyond this year, & the republicans take back the Senate, Biden can kiss his chances of getting even a hearing on a new Justice away.

by Anonymousreply 285March 22, 2022 7:45 AM

on the bright side, if Thomas does die after the midterms and Democrats lose, at least there'll just be an open seat. An open seat formerly occupied by a scummy right winger is better than nothing.

I have wondered if some of the reluctance of the Justice Department is the seating of a jury. Any jury with even one of Trump's cult followers sitting on the jury would most likely refuse to find Trump or his cronies guilty regardless of the evidence. Jury selection would be critical.

While I would love to see Trump die in prison, Attorney General Garland doesn't even seem to be interested in going after anyone of Trump's cronies. Nixon's henchmen served prison time for their crimes. Trump's accomplices should be investigated and tried.

if a Democratic President had done just ONE of the many things Trump has done and the next administration was repub, without a doubt the repub AG would have already investigated the former President and be drooling at the chance to indict.

Garland is a nice guy but he's just not strong enough for the job. If he's waiting until the end of the Jan 6 committee then that's a mistake too. If a repub wins the 2024 presidential elections, any investigation into Trump that Garland starts will be shut down immediately. Should Trump be federally indicted, the new repub president will immediately pardon him and say it was a partisan witch hunt. There's no good enough excuse for Garland to have not done something by now and given that there have been no leaks, it's highly doubtful he's done anything

by Anonymousreply 326March 22, 2022 10:32 PM

I'm not ready to condemn Garland yet. I do, however, find it interesting that there's so much animosity towards him on DL. Some are likely just impatient for something to happen (I am too, and WTF is going on with Matt Gaetz's investigation by the DOJ?) but I wonder if there isn't a troll campaign against him, much like the ones for Kamala Harris.

by Anonymousreply 328March 23, 2022 12:46 AM

Exactly, R316. I keep wondering how you apply "norms" in response to abnormal circumstances? How do you apply "executive privileges" to someone who completely violated and abused those privileges? So Trump and the scum around him can violate every single law or act meant to safeguard the executive branch and then use those same laws to shield themselves from prosecution by citing executive privilege? It's just disgustingly absurd.

by Anonymousreply 329March 23, 2022 12:59 AM

NOW IS HE DEAD YET?

by Anonymousreply 330March 23, 2022 1:31 AM

That’s part of the problem r327. I am one of those who are legit posters, but there are no doubt trolls here too. We have to be able to discuss this topic and stay on focus — and you can tell that they really don’t want us discussing this. Garland is beginning to look like a complete and utter dud. I want to be wrong, but how long do we wait before we realized we’ve been Muellered yet again?!? I know we need to stay calm and rational. I’m just asking, are we waiting for something dramatic to happen here? What’s our plan B when nothing happens? How long before we acknowledge that he’s not going to do anything? Are we going to wait to bitch about this until 2023, when Trump runs again? I mean JFC, I do not understand the total disengagement anymore. Yes, we’re in a world war, but to me, that should make us even *more* upset by Garland!!!! What in the ever loving fuck is he going to do about this shit??? We as citizens have the right to at least get a status update from the fucking DOJ on Trump!!! Otherwise this is just death by a thousand cuts to America!

by Anonymousreply 331March 23, 2022 1:47 AM

R329 it's infuriating but that is exactly what has happened. Trump and his associates broke all the rules but then get awarded protection by the same rules because not enough people are willing to hold the fuckers accountable. Consequently there is a numbness now that has overtaken many Americans who were excited to get them out of office. People just don't think anything's going to happen to them now because it's been over a year and NOTHING despite the emergency

by Anonymousreply 332March 23, 2022 2:50 AM

A major consideration in indicting someone is “can you get a conviction.” I think the problem could be that Garland and other DOJ prosecutors realize that there is absolutely no way they can keep a MAGAt (or few) off a jury. Given the commitment MAGAts feel about Trump, a conviction would be virtually impossible. A hung jury is the best that one could hope for.

Given that reality, perhaps it is less embarrassing to not bring charges versus indicting and losing.

by Anonymousreply 333March 23, 2022 3:05 AM

so by not charging them, that means they're above the law which goes against the premise of what the US is supposed to be

by Anonymousreply 334March 23, 2022 3:12 AM

R333 — I agree that that is likely the number one (or two) consideration. But what about just doing what is right? What about doing what is just? What about doing your actual job?

There was a time when we believed that these questions require real answers. We used to fight for these principles. If Garland’s main consideration is the public embarrassment, then he is not fit to stand in those shoes. If his main fear is that there will be violence, then he is not fit to stand in those shoes. If there was ever a time when we need true leadership, it is right now. We cannot fail.

R333, aren't there ways to go after Trump or his cadre that don't require a jury? I'm thinking perhaps a House investigation where people have to testify before Congress, a situation where three or more justices decide the verdict, I don't know -- I'm not a lawyer, but I know there are various permutations of our justice system that would allow prosecutions without having to take the risk of plunging into the proverbial deplorable pool to find jurors.

From the Washington Post

Justice Clarence Thomas missed oral arguments at the Supreme Court this week because of his hospitalization for treatment of an infection.

A court spokeswoman declined to provide an update on Thomas’s condition.

He was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington Friday night, complaining of flu-like symptoms. Sunday night, the court said in a new release that he had been diagnosed with an infection and was being treated with intravenous antibiotics.

A court spokeswoman Sunday night reiterated that Thomas had been vaccinated and boosted against the coronavirus, and that his illness was not covid-related.

Justices decide for themselves how much health information they will release to the public, and there has been no additional guidance.

Here are hopeful stats from the CDC website:

Anyone can get an infection, and almost any infection, including COVID-19, can lead to sepsis. In a typical year:

At least 1.7 million adults in America develop sepsis.

Nearly 270,000 Americans die as a result of sepsis.

1 in 3 patients who dies in a hospital has sepsis.

Sepsis, or the infection causing sepsis, starts outside of the hospital in nearly 87% of cases.

My neighbor died of sepsis. She was fine, but started to feel those flu-like symptoms. The next day—literally—her son found her on the bathroom floor delirious. She died later that night. It came in incredibly quickly.

Of course, we don’t know if that’s what Thomas has.

by Anonymousreply 424March 23, 2022 11:45 PM

I hope it's sepsis as a complication of MRSA and necrotizing flesh bacteria.

by Anonymousreply 425March 23, 2022 11:51 PM

by Anonymousreply 426March 24, 2022 12:03 AM

I think it may be severe infection if he needs IV antibiotics to treat it. His sad, final days. And I hope it crosses the blood-brain barrier and goes on to destroy his already vitiated brain.

Thomas did not have COVID-19 and his infection was being treated with intravenous antibiotics, the court has said.

Because our sweet RBG had proven that she could not be trusted when it came to the status of her health and because she consistently downplayed the seriousness of her health crises. Any trip to the doctor by her could easily have been a clue that she had terminal cancer.

SCOTUSBlog: The dearth of information about Thomas’ condition is not unusual. The Supreme Court often provides relatively few details about the justices’ health, to the extent that it discloses information at all. In July 2020, for example, Chief Justice John Roberts was hospitalized overnight after a fall at a Washington-area country club near his home; the court confirmed the incident only in response to an inquiry weeks later from The Washington Post, which learned about the fall from someone who saw it.

by Anonymousreply 488March 24, 2022 2:31 PM

If it is Sepsis and they have treated him this long - if he survives this - it still will mean damage to his organs.

This happened to my mother. Somehow she survived it - and it was awful. But the doctor told us there would be damage to her organs. She was 84 and one tough lady. Up until this, she was still golfing.

But we soon learned her heart had been affected. They treated her but she passed 4 months later. The one conversation she had with me - right after the sepsis- was don't ever let me go through that again. Promise me you will give me "a pill."

Virginia Thomas urged White House chief to pursue unrelenting efforts to overturn the 2020 election
The messages – 29 in all – reveal an extraordinary pipeline between Virginia Thomas, who goes by Ginni, and President Donald Trump’s top aide during a period when Trump and his allies were vowing to go to the Supreme Court in an effort to negate the election results.

[...]
The text messages were among 2,320 that Meadows provided to the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The content of messages between Thomas and Meadows – 21 sent by her, eight by him – has not previously been reported. They were reviewed by The Post and CBS News and then confirmed by five people who have seen the committee’s documents.

[...]
In her text messages to Meadows, Ginni Thomas spread false theories, commented on cable news segments and advocated with urgency and fervor that the president and his team take action to reverse the outcome of the election. She urged that they take a hard line with Trump staffers and congressional Republicans who had resisted arguments that the election was stolen.
In the Nov. 5 message to Meadows, Thomas went on to quote a passage that had circulated on right-wing websites: “Biden crime family & ballot fraud co-conspirators (elected officials, bureaucrats, social media censorship mongers, fake stream media reporters, etc) are being arrested & detained for ballot fraud right now & over coming days, & will be living in barges off GITMO to face military tribunals for sedition.”

Is it tinfoil hat territory to think that maybe keeping him out of sight and in a sympathetic framing is related to this?

The House Judiciary Committee should open up an inquiry regarding Thomas’s involvement with the traitorous activities of his wife and others. He should never have been involved in the case regarding release of those documents. The fact that he alone voted to withhold the documents from disclosure raises serious questions about his impartiality.

R530 I can only take small doses of Morning Joe so I only watched it for like 10 minutes when they discussed crazy Ginni! That was depressing enough for me to change the channel immediately afterwards.

Joe mentioned (during the Ginni Thomas coverage) that Mark Meadows told Ginni that efforts to get Trump back in to the White House was a battle between good and evil and he was praying for Trump to get back in. Joe called Meadows a bad guy and said "of course he will get away with it as does everyone in the Trump administration."

Despite claiming to be an Independent, Joe is still a Republican piece of shit and they don't really care about democracy and fairness so he probably thinks Merrick Garland and Alvin Bragg are doing a fine job. I've never heard Joe directly criticize Garland or Bragg. IF he ever did, I'm sure it would have been just a speed bump on his way to criticizing Democrats... AGAIN! That of course is his daily mantra.

R530 Morning Joe at least needs to ask serious questions about Garland, Bragg, James, and Fani Willis, regarding their investigative progresss, and the status of potential indictments. Have expert guests directly familiar with these situations if they can be booked to speak.

I am frustrated with the timid, lazy, and ineptness shown by prosecutors on the federal and state/local levels that are suppose to be working on all this corruption.

Democratic politicians are largely silent about this outside the 1/06 committee. Trump, his older offspring, and his prime cronies will get away with everything.
It’ll be up to Roberts now, to avoid any and all cases that might present a conflict of interest not just for Thomas but for his piece of shit wife.

That’s not how this works. Roberts has a few prerogatives as the Chief Justice and this isn’t one of them; he still only gets one vote. He alone can’t determine what cases, if any, come before the Court. The Justices all vote on which cases they will hear. Nor can he force Thomas to recuse himself. For Supreme Court Justices the sole remedy for misconduct (that does not otherwise rise to the level of a criminal violation) is impeachment.
Lifetime appointments need to go, they're completely outdated. The Supreme Court was founded in 1789. What was the average life expectancy in fucking 1789?

Maybe someone can explain clearer, but I seem to recall that the rationalization for setting that standard was that landowners and squires in our early history didn't seek out office until their late 30s/early 40's and life expectancy for them was about age 52.

Which is roughly two Senate terms (12 years).

There's a common misunderstanding of historic life expectancy. Many, many, many more infants and children died young in those days but once you got to adulthood, plenty of people lived into their 70s and 80s. The numbers are just skewed because of the high youth death rate.

In the 1790s and early 1800s, I believe, there were fewer justice on the Court and fewer cases before the Court. The justices had a lot more time for circuit court cases and for doing whatever else it was that they did in their lives. There was a greater turnover, with justices stepping down to run for some office or other, or just because they got tired of the job. And some of them would drop dead of smallpox or whatever.

by Anonymousreply 574March 25, 2022 4:20 PM

So NO JOE" WE" were not surprised, she's always been a wack job, that's all on you and your inability to see it or call it out for over 30 years!

Scarborough is such a charlatan. I could have sworn he jumped ship pre-Trump, but I just looked it up and he was a Republican all the way until 2017 ... and the middle of 2017 at that? He's like Red Pill Black, but only in reverse. People need to stop watching his show.

Does Clarence have the dia-beetus? Those two look like they could tear up a Hometown Buffet.

Long Dong was shoe-horned into the SCOTUS on the condition he always promote Rethuglian values. And he has done that dutifully for 30 years.

The media is reporting he was released from the hospital— so sadly he’s not dead yet

Well, not to be a TV MD, but on Chicago Med, a crazy lady with MRSA was released to home with an oral prescription for antibiotics. A SIX WEEK COURSE.

This story isn't over until he either shows up to work fit as a fiddle or he is incapacitated again and dies.

Team Reaper!
